Aloha fun had by all
In lieu of a prom this year, Sterling Presbyterian Manor went tropical and threw a luau. The residents said they enjoyed the good food, watching the kids play with bubbles, and getting to visit with new people and make new friends. The Sterling United Methodist ChurchYouth Group joined in the Hawaiian-themed fun by acting as servers and entertainment.
July 2017
Luau committee chair Lauralee Steffey had the most island spirit of all showing up in her tropical best with flower in her hair, lei around her neck, grass skirt on her hips, sporting her favorite coconut bikini! Aloha!
The bubble machine was the No. 1 request for the event by the residents on the luau committee. TheYouth Group had fun with the machine and also brought a ukulele player who serenaded everyone with island tunes. TheYouth Group will be spending Tuesday afternoons this summer with the residents. What better way to start off this relationship than with banana splits, watermelon and bubbles!
Summertime Bucket List
A great way to celebrate any season is to write a “bucket list” of things that you’d like to enjoy during that particular time of year. The residents at Sterling Presbyterian Manor are encouraged daily to write down their items, and there are forms around the building to fill out and pencils available in buckets. These forms simply have the outline of a bucket on them, and we ask that they write down their top three items that they would like to do on that day or maybe that week. Of those who have filled out their lists, the “to do” items range from nearly walking again to getting their hair or nails done. We asked what their summertime bucket list would be for summer 2017, and here are some of the responses: 1. Go to Beaver, Ks., to see where I grew up at and see how it has changed. 2. Go to the fair in September. 3. Ride on the back of a motorcycle again, as that is the only true way to ride.

2 COMMUNITY MATTERS JULY 2017
Sizzling Summer Movies Movies are shown every Wednesday and Friday at Sterling Presbyterian Manor, and suggestions are always welcome! Here’s a list of movies residents said they’d like to see this summer: • “Grease” • “Dirty Dancing” • “Beach Blanket Bingo” • “Blue Hawaii”
• “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (a favorite for one resident who could watch it every day) • A new musical that they have never seen • An army picture • “OldYeller” • “The Great Locomotive Chase” • “Because They’reYoung” • “A Summer Place”
Activity Director Donna Grizzle will do her best to play all of these movies.
“The library usually has what I need, or our Health Services Director Betsy Geddes has 1,000 or so movies in her personal collection that she lets me borrow. I also order from Amazon, but since my budget is not very large I try to borrow as many as possible to save money for other things!”
