Family, Food & Fun at the Fair!
We had six residents and staff members go to the Kansas State Fair in September! First stop in the bus we borrowed from Newton Presbyterian Manor was the new Sterling Sonic. A ride to show residents the new Sonic has been a popular outing the past few weeks. Having a new restaurant in our tiny town has created quite the stir for old and young alike. Once we had our chance to grab a few French Vanilla iced coffees, we were on our way to Hutchinson. At the fair, residents, some family

members who met us, and staff enjoyed a few hours of food and fun! The day was filled with peanuts, popcorn, deep-fried pumpkin pie, free samples, tractor browsing, animals, and reminiscing on past fun had at the Kansas State Fair. Residents are already planning the hot spots to hit for next year!

The Sound of Music By Angela Thorne, Sterling College Intern
Sterling Presbyterian Manor hired me to be a part of the activities for residents. Specifically, they wanted me to play piano for one hour a day as music therapy. For the first month or so, I came in once a day and played piano in the dining area and west wing for an hour. At first, it was a little bit of a struggle to figure out what I knew how to play and what the residents would enjoy listening to. Although there is still a wide variety of what each individual seems to like (worship, classic, Disney, “beer drinking), they are mostly content with anything as long as it sounds good.
The residents seem to enjoy listening to the piano every day but they also love just to have someone there with them. In addition to playing the
piano, I also occasionally do other things around Presbyterian Manor such as scrapbooking, painting nails, or playing dominoes (a crowd favorite). Dominoes get real at the Presbyterian Manor, so when they are playing at the table near the piano in the dining area they kindly suggest that I do not play. Playing the piano while dominoes is happening is no longer music therapy. Although I have not been here very long, it has been fun to get to know the residents the little bit that I have. Many of them have a great sense of humor and say things that are surprising, so you cannot help but laugh. I look forward to getting to know more of the residents as time goes on. They are so sweet. The couple of residents I have been able

to get to know a little bit have wonderful stories to tell, filled with lots of wisdom they have acquired throughout the years.
A Boo-tiful Sight
Sterling Presbyterian Manor went all out to decorate with Halloween spirit during the month of October. Creating a festive atmosphere is just one of the many ways we help our residents feel at home.

Follow me Pastor Ken’s Corner:
Sterling Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Ken Connor
When Jesus called at least five of the men who would become his core group, he did it with these two simple words: “Follow me.” No promise of riches or fame, just a simple “Follow me.” There is a profound principle here that applies to so many areas of our lives. The best followers become the best leaders. Why is that? What does following have to do with leading? Those who follow well learn to be responsive to the needs around them. They learn to listen and observe what is going on around them. They learn that it is not about them, and that working as a part of a team you can accomplish much more than you can on your own. If you desire to be a leader one day, learn to be a good follower.
