COMING UP IN COMMUNITY MATTERS:
Everyone has a story to tell
We will focus on memory care and national memory screening day in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. What do you do to stay sharp? What tricks or tips do you have for remembering things? How has being in memory care helped a loved one? Because this also will be our November issue, we also will be sharing stories about our many veterans. If you served in the military, we want to hear your story. If you’ve got a story to share, contact Cindy Moore and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

Reach for the goal Pastor Ken’s Corner:
Sterling Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Ken Connor
A few weeks ago, my wife and I were “Grandma” and “Grandpa” at our district Kid’s Camp. This year’s theme was “Reach,” and they tied it to the upcoming Olympics. That got me to thinking

about how we all should be living our lives. We need to be reaching for something. So, let me ask you a question, what in your life are you reaching for? Which led me to this statement: Be careful what you reach for, you might get it. Read the account in 2 Samuel 11:1-5 and see what happened to King David when he

Proverbs 29:18 says this, “Where there is no vision the people perish.” In other words, if you stop reaching, you start dying. It does not matter if you are 20 or 99, keep looking for something new to reach for.

reached for what he should not. It not only affected him and his family, it brought trouble for the whole nation.
Betsy Geddes, RN, Health Services Director
Betsy Geddes has nearly seen it all when it comes to nursing. She’s been in the healthcare field since 1991, and yet, there’s still more she longs to learn.
“Right now I’m an RN, and also the [Health Services Director (HSD)] here at Presbyterian Manor. I have my ASN, or Associate of Science in Nursing. I’ve been here nine years, and although I learn a lot on the job, I want to continue my education. That’s why I’m going back to school to get my BSN, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing.” Betsy is currently attending classes through Hutchinson Community College, and will then finish her degree through Fort Hays State University.
“I’ve thought about it for a long time.
Now that my two youngest are going to be sophomores in high school and starting to drive, I thought it was time to do something for me. And I was able to get a scholarship through PMMA, so that helps,” said Betsy.
With a combined total of nine children between Betsy and her husband, she certainly isn’t exaggerating when she says she didn’t have time to do it before. She’ll finish her degree in two years, and will continue in her duties as HSD at Presbyterian Manor. PMMA prides itself on offering scholarships to employees who choose to continue their education, and believe that a fully educated staff is a great way to provide exceptional service to all those who call this place home.
“(PMMA) is really good at encouraging all of us to keep learning. We even offer CNA classes here, and everyone from dietary to housekeeping to outside community members are encouraged to learn more,” said Betsy.
We’re listening: Staff works to address resident needs Every year, Sterling Presbyterian Manor conducts a survey of our residents to determine ways in which we can improve. It is through this feedback that we learn how to better serve our residents, and truly deliver on our mission to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values. Following our 2016 survey, here is our action outline:
Action Steps:
The Food is Attractive and Appetizing”
1. Every meal plate served will have some sort of decorative garnish on it at each meal.
2. Homemade entrees will be created at least twice a week.
3. Homemade side dishes will be created at least twice a week.
4. Homemade baked desserts or fresh fruit items will be created at least twice a week.
5. A heated cart will be used to maintain the proper temperature of room trays.
“My Food Preferences are Honored”
1. There will be a special themed meal designated at least once a month. We will meet individually with each resident in HC and IL to determine their favorite meat, vegetable, sides, and dessert. 2. Residents will create a meal of their choice –and receive recognition for it. These meals will be scheduled weekly rotating through all residents. The afternoon meal will be from a cottage resident.
3. Put a PIT team together to study, plan and implement family-style dining for the Westwood neighborhood to improve the dining experience for residents who need assistance with eating.
For more information about the resident survey, or to voice suggestions or
concerns, contact Executive Director Mike Rajewski at
mrajewski@pmma.org or (620) 904-0025.
“I have opportunities to engage in NEW activities”
1. Request from residents each month at their council meetings what new things they would like to try for the upcoming month.
2. Implement PEAK action steps that address honoring community living choices.
