Say hello to Cecilia and Cherree Meet the newest additions to the Wichita Presbyterian Manor leadership team: Cecilia Foster and Cherree Hudspeth. Cecilia joined the staff in June as the dining services director. She previously worked at Via Christi Village McLean and Via Christi Village Ridge Plaza as the director of nutrition services. In her role at Wichita Presbyterian Manor, Cecilia is responsible for the entire dining services program from independent living in The Landing, Bistro and Waypoint dining rooms to the pantries in healthcare, PATH® (Post-Acute-To-Home) and assisted living areas. “Every day brings new challenges. I’m always on the go and never have time to get bored,” said Cecilia. “Bored” isn’t part of Cecilia’s vocabulary. When she’s not at the office, Cecilia enjoys board games, cooking, fiber crafts, gardening and naps. “I’m married to a wonderful bearded, kilt-wearing guy named Tom and have three grown sons,” she said. They also take care of two dogs, four ducks and two hives of honeybees. HELLO, continued on page 3

Wellness Department offers ways for residents to stay active and in shape Most people have a love/hate relationship with working out. They love the benefits but hate the process. Luckily at Wichita Presbyterian Manor, residents have countless ways to get their blood pumping, keep their interest and have fun all at the same time. For starters, the community offers a full schedule of land and water classes to provide residents with both a social outlet and a holistic approach to fitness. “From ankle rolls to hand movements for dexterity and grip strength—we work on everything,” said Pamela Greenhaw, Wellness Director. “There are so many exercises that are important as we age, and we try and incorporate a little bit of everything into every class.” While physical abilities and an individual’s overall level of fitness can vary greatly from one person to the next, it is important to Pamela that everyone feels comfortable and can receive the benefits of participating in the classes. The current resident-favorite cardio workout routine is done to the YMCA song. “We have different levels in every class, but we always try to ensure that everyone can participate,” said Pamela. “Even if there are some limitations WELLNESS, continued on page 2

on what you can do, there are modifications to most every exercise.” And those who regularly participate in the classes often become the Wellness Department’s best marketers. “The people who come to class religiously are good at pulling their neighbors in to get them healthy,” said Pamela. “Once they try it, they experience the benefits.” Beyond the organized classes, residents can also take advantage of the community’s on-site fitness center, which features two Water classes are available to residents as a form of exercise.

treadmills and a NuStep machine for a low-impact, cardiovascularworkout alternative. “The fitness center is fantastic and has equipment that is beneficial for strength building and heart health.” said Pamela. “Some people prefer it to the class environment.” No matter what their personal preference, Pamela is just happy to see residents remaining active and staying in shape.
“As you age, your gait and balance can change along with the strength in your legs,” said Pamela. “If you don’t keep up with resistance exercises, it’s amazing how quickly you can lose that strength.” As for her own motivation, Pamela finds it in those she works with. “The people are just fantastic. I love the fact that when they come to class, they might not really feel like exercising, but we try and smile and get it done together,” said Pamela.

Pastor appreciation breakfast
We encourage residents to invite their pastor to attend this special event with them. Seating is arranged so that church groups can sit together with their pastor and spend some quality time visiting. Once again, we will be having a photo booth that will provide a fun memory for pastors and their members. Last year we had a tremendous turnout, with great fellowship and delicious food. For 2018, our Pastor Appreciation Breakfast will be on Tuesday,

During the month of October, communities across America recognize and honor pastors for their dedication and service to their people. Many residents of Presbyterian Manor have strong and active connections with their local church and pastor. Each year we plan an appreciation breakfast, so our community will have the opportunity to say thank you to many of their local pastors.
October 9 at 8 a.m. The celebration will be in The Landing and Commons area. We are encouraging an RSVP for pastors and residents so that we will have plenty of food prepared. Please contact Chaplain Greg Spring if you have any questions or if you need an invitation to hand to your pastor at 316-942-7456 or email gspring@ pmma.org.
