The Prescott College Limited-Residency Master of Arts program in Counseling Psychology is a professional preparation program for individuals with the goal of becoming a licensed professional counselor. Through this program, students discover and develop their own therapeutic qualities while learning theory and building skills for professional practice as a mental health counselor. At the heart of the 60 semester credit program is a holistic approach to mental health, healing and wellness. This approach emphasizes empowerment of the client and recognizes the client’s experiential awareness as a key element in meaningful change. The program curriculum includes required core courses and supervised clinical experiences needed for all graduates to be prepared for successful, ethical and competent practice as mental health counselors as well as eligibility for licensure in most states. Our flexible program allows students the freedom to work with faculty to customize their educational experience based on their career and educational goals.

The curriculum consists of ten well-structured and carefully crafted courses. Delivery of the coursework is through a blending of face-to-face instruction during Colloquia visits, and online learning. The content of the courses ensure that every student has thorough immersion in the most up-to-date foundational knowledge that constitutes the field of mental health counseling. Elective coursework offers other rewards. Building on the fundamental theories and knowledge contained within the core required counseling courses, students have freedom to explore in greater depth, areas of passion and interest within the broad array of counseling electives. Our elective courses are delivered in a mentored; self-directed or independent study model. With the support and tutelage of qualified mentors who are experts in a particular area, students have greater freedom to design the content and focus within the topical area of an elective course.

Post-M.A. Certificates are offered in any of the concentrations. Professionals holding at least a Master’s degree along with a current license to practice in any Mental Health Profession are encouraged to apply.

It is important to note that no academic program or institution grants licensure to practice as a mental health counselor. Our program will however, will prepare students to be eligible to sit for most state licensure exams. Students are expected to acquaint themselves with the licensure requirements of the state in which they intend to practice and to tailor their program accordingly.
