Presence Life Planning Curriculum Dr. Agnes Ip, PhD, LMFT
In our many years of family ministry, Presence realizes that the excessive and vicious “competition” in our society has become people’s biggest enemy nowadays. Such competition destroys the harmonious relationships among people and distorts the purpose of education, life and work. Competition even affects how people define the meaning of life. As Matthew 16:26 puts it, “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” As a lot of parents and teachers blindly pursue the questionable, distorted values of our society, our next generation will pay a hefty price for it. In recent years, student suicide rates in Hong Kong have been on the rise. As a result, some Hong Kong parents will send their children to study in the United States under the false impression that there is less pressure studying here. However, student suicides among prestigious schools in the United States are not uncommon. The following is a true, heartbreaking story: A Chinese student who attended a prestigious school in Northern California once told his parents that, in his school,
exams were valued higher than lives. One day, his classmate was hit by a car while riding his bike to school. The bike was totaled. Instead of going to the doctor, he went to school covered in blood because he did not want to miss the first-period exam for fear that his college application might be compromised. As he was limping into the classroom with his bloodstained body, the teacher did not send him to seek medical care but questioned him, “Why are you late for the exam?”
students and adults. The curriculum for trainers has a dual purpose – to help adults in their personal growth and to equip them in becoming life coaches to their children and students. Presence’s curriculum uses interactive games and activities, explores real life cases, and offers biblical principles for the following topics to help individuals discover their personal and social identities and reshape their views on the meaning of life so that they may live a vibrant life with purpose.
As many parents and teachers overemphasize competitiveness and the pursuit of the ideal lifestyle of our society, they neglect to teach children the importance of enjoying and managing their own life. They turn education, which is good in itself, into a psychological burden for the children. We believe that not all parents agree with the distorted value system of our society. During our consultations, we encountered parents who encouraged their children to study and live according to their abilities and the talents God bestowed on them. However, children easily get lost when they begin to identify with the world’s values. In order to enhance their competitiveness, they push themselves to their limits in studying and participating in all kinds of activities. Seeing this, we ask ourselves how we can help parents become better coaches to their children throughout life’s journey.
Presence Life Planning Curriculum Course Descriptions
In response, Presence developed the Presence Life Planning Curriculum to help participants learn to set life goals and career directions. Presence’s curriculum focuses on the development and growth of the whole person, emphasizing life priorities, emotional health, and the importance of relationships. This curriculum can be used for both trainees or trainers. The trainee curriculum can be taught to two separate groups – high school
2/ Managing Your Life: Pursuing Physical and Emotional Health
1/ Defining Your Core Values: Setting Life Priorities The time between high school and college is a critical stage that is full of choices. Therefore, it is particularly important to teach youth the right set of values in order to guide them through critical decisions in their lives. If life is like a train, then your view of life and your value system are like the track on which your life runs. Setting a train on the right track to reach your intended destination is the basis for life decisions. No matter how fast a train runs, even if it outruns other trains, life is still a mess if the train does not run on the right track. This lesson will help you discover the importance of having the right value system and show you how to set your priorities.
In this age of rapid informational and technological development, young people can easily gain academic and relevant knowledge. However, life management skills, such as selfcare and interpersonal relationships, may pale in comparison. Without a competent level of self-care and a balanced lifestyle, our youth are facing

challenges in dealing with emotions. Many onsets of mental health issues are triggered by prolonged lack of sleep, exercise and mindful solitude. This segment guides you to pursue physical and emotional health, so that you can enjoy living a balanced and vibrant life. 3/ Cherishing Your Relationships: Investing in Intimate Relationships Humans are relational beings. Important intimate relationships in life are foundational in establishing security and a healthy sense of self. Our relationship with God directly affects the quality of our interpersonal relationships. This lesson teaches you the art of giveand-take, how to nourish important relationships to enhance intimacy, and the wisdom of letting go when relationships end. 4/ Embracing Your Life: Discovering Your Uniqueness, Life Goals, and Dreams You can only live a fruitful and happy life when you are passionate about life and have a set of clear life goals. Through assessing different learning

styles, multiple intelligences, character traits, talents and spiritual gifts, this lesson helps you find your uniqueness. Armed with such knowledge, you can set your own life goals. This lesson also encourages you to realize your dreams by broadening your horizon, understanding society and the world on a deeper level, and actively serving others. 5/ Rising above Limitations: Accepting and Overcoming Challenges in Life Living in comparison with others often results in pain and despair. This segment guides you to understand your own limitations and those of your family, society and culture. You will learn to accept who you are, your disadvantages, and your limits. You also learn to appreciate your ability to rise above challenges to achieve an unwavering and grateful attitude in life. 6/ Reevaluating Success and Failure: Examining Societal Standards
success in reality is often defined by those around us. In this lesson, we will be taking a fresh look and evaluating our standards and examining their validity. We will aim to relieve ourselves from the bondage of societal pressures and develop an understanding of the importance of connecting to a community with healthy standards. 7/ Resisting Temptations: Handling Stress with a Healthy Attitude in Order to Resist Temptations and Addictions When facing external pressures, many often lack coping skills and end up finding excuses or outlets in the wrong direction. Some seek relief through compulsive buying or from online games. Some resort to pornography, drugs, and other addictive indulgences. This lesson helps you establish a healthy value system, develop skills to cope with pressures, and resist lust and temptations. We also introduce therapeutic plans for addictions.
Our endless pursuit of success is the main source of our pressures. However,

8/ Living a Moral Life: Rejecting Personal Gains Achieved through Unethical Practices In a highly competitive society, many are choosing to abandon their moral standard and chasing after their goals at the expense of personal integrity, reputation, trust, and friendship. This lesson points out the need and the knowhow of establishing a crystal clear ethical standard, a set of life priorities, an attitude of fighting for justice and rejecting selfish gains through unrighteous or unlawful paths.

My dad is a successful businessman. When I was young, I used to wander in his factory and office. Because I admired my dad, I had always wanted to be like him and become a respectable businesswoman. I knew for sure I would major in business in college, without seriously considering
my genuine interests, dreams, gifts and strengths. Naturally, I am creative and my passions include art, drawing, writing, music, and drama. However, my parents and older relatives advised against majoring in art, for they
believed such a degree would not offer me any job prospects. So, my creative dreams were nipped in the bud. I was always obedient and worked diligently. After earning my business degree from a prestigious college, I worked as an accountant trainee.

However, I soon realized that I didn’t like numbers. As a natural step for me in my career journey, I started working at my dad’s garment business and learned the trade. Though I was seen as my dad’s heir, I was aware I did not like business at all. As a result, I kept changing fields, from garment manufacturing to fashion. I thought fashion design was my calling because it at least seemed related to art. At first, I felt excited when I saw gorgeous clothing. However, after working in the field for four years, I still could not find any sense of satisfaction. By then, I had become a Christian and was seeking to understand the meaning of life. When I looked at the glamorous external appearance of models, I couldn’t help but ask myself: What’s the use of such a glamorous look if the inside is empty, and life has no direction and meaning? It woke me up, and I was determined to find a meaningful job! When I decisively left the fashion field to find the direction of my life, God provided me with a job as an editor of a food magazine. I thought I had found my purpose, since I had always enjoyed writing. However, my heart yearned to know the meaning of life. At last, God miraculously opened the door for me. My friend introduced me to be an editor of a magazine of a Christian organization focused on family ministry. I started to write about life testimonies, inspirational journals, and marriage and family. My heart was filled with joy and satisfaction as I witnessed more and more marriages and families becoming transformed. I also helped with taking calls and referring the callers to counseling as needed. I was surprised that instead of feeling annoyed by talking with strangers, I rather enjoyed it. As I came to understand how a person’s mind

and thoughts can be changed through counseling (though, undeniably, I know only God can change a person’s life), I desired to learn more about psychology and counseling. Despite the fact that I was married (I was thirty already), with the support of my husband, I enrolled in a Master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy at a seminary. As I was studying and raising my family at the same time, it took me ten years to finish the Master’s program. Through this process, I deeply experienced God’s grace and guidance. I also understand that one can be highly motivated when studying something that one is genuinely interested in. When I was forty, I finally earned my Master’s Degree. I am thankful I can do what I enjoy and make the best use of my potential. As a mother of three children, I was not able to meet the fieldwork hour requirement to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Sometimes, I wonder if I had discovered my interest in psychology and counseling earlier, would I have found my life direction sooner? Maybe I would have become a licensed counselor and my life would look very different. Of course, I truly believe God has a plan for everyone. I am grateful to God for giving me the opportunity to rediscover myself: I enjoy the art of quiet reflection and exploring psychology. Because I am both sensitive and creative, I naturally love art, writing, music, drama, and theatre. Now, I like to seize every opportunity I have to make the best use of my gifts to glorify God and bless others. I do not want to waste the talents, personality, and gifts that God has bestowed on me, nor live my life in vain.

I feel the next generation is even more blessed as young people make use of various resources available to help them discover their life direction as early as high school to avoid making unnecessary mistakes. Through its professional assessments and consultations, as well as the newly developed Life and Career Planning Curriculum, Presence can continue to help young people see the opportunities available to them in a competitive environment. We want young people to make full use of their potential, so they can make a positive difference in this world.

Intergenerational Mentorship Ministry Highlights Christine Shen
On February 25, 2017, RE:NEW hosted the Intergenerational Mentorship Conference in partnership with Los Angeles Chinese Alliance Church to bridge the gap between youth workers and parents so they could support each other in ministering to youth and engage in healthy dialogue about intergenerational mentorship. The conference consisted of three sessions. During the morning session, the Tam family (Gil and his two adult children, Stacie and Bryant) shared about their family dynamics and how Christian parents can be spiritual role models for their children. Parents were encouraged to “act the role, not just speak the role.” Parents also have to give children room to grow and make mistakes. The key is casting a wider net and giving children freedom to be who they are, yet maintaining presence and support. The second session was a Pastors’ Panel featuring three pastors (Pastor Ken Ly, Pastor Benjamin Chen, and Pastor Keone Pang) who shared about their perspectives regarding youth ministry in their churches. They touched on ways that parents can be involved in church and offered encouragement and advice for parents to grow along with their children.
The conference concluded with Dr. Agnes Ip’s presentation on “Healthy Dialogue among Parents, Youth, and Youth Workers.” The most important thing that parents can do is to understand their youth’s core concerns and connect with them through empathy and proper guidance. Healthy communication between parents and youth workers are also vital as they partner together to mentor the youth. Presence Quotient® is currently developing an online training course on intergenerational mentorship titled “Healthy Dialogue between Parents, Youth, and Youth Workers.” In this training, we will give you tips for healthy communication as well as a model for intergenerational mentorship. We have prepared lessons for parents, youth, and youth workers respectively for the purpose of bridging communication gaps. If you are interested in learning more about this valuable resource, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Career Exploration: A Testimonial Christine Shen When Denise Ho graduated in June of 2016, she was not too sure what she wanted to do with her life – where to attend college, what to study, which career she was interested in. She decided to complete Presence Possibilities’ College Major and Career Exploration assessment and consultation service and, as a result, was able to narrow down her options. Like many other teenagers, there were a number of things she could see herself doing. Her interests, personality, and preferred work environment all
play major roles in her choosing a suitable college major and future career. Denise learned that, because she is introverted, she needs to take time away for herself from time to time. This plays a big part in the nature of the work that she can do and will find satisfying. She also learned that her pursuit of her passion in the arts does not have to be done in the sphere of work and that she would probably not enjoy them if they became her “job.” It would be better for her to pursue them in the sphere of “personal hobbies.”
The value of career coaching lies in helping individuals identify career options that best suit their needs and personality. This understanding empowers young people to embark on the right track, so they can avoid spending extra years and money exploring and searching for different college majors and jobs. The goal of Presence Possibilities’ assessments and consultations is to help individuals understand how their unique combination of interests and personalities can result in a satisfying career.
When asked about her experience with the assessment and consultation, Denise responded: “The process went really smoothly, thanks to Dr. Agnes, who is very patient, kind and understanding. She was also extremely informative and has many years of experience.” Denise Ho

2017 PRESENCE POSSIBILITIES HIGHLIGHTS Christine Shen
This past year, Presence Possibilities served almost 20 clients, including individuals and families, who completed our assessment and consultation services. We were able to help young people with their career direction and help parents better understand their children’s learning styles. In July 2017, Presence Possibilities again hosted a Soft Skills Summer Workshop series for people in our community. This year, we kicked off our first Soft Skills Summer Workshops series for adults and introduced two new courses: Self-Defense and Makeup Workshops. These courses were carefully designed to help individuals gain a competitive edge in their personal and professional pursuits. In addition to academics and technical training, individuals must acquire interpersonal skills (or soft skills) and effectively manage different areas of life in order to stand out among the rest of the competition. We hope we can continue to provide quality services for both youth and adults to help expand their potential and enrich their lives.

Presence Parent Prayer Ministry Lily Ma
The young generation today has very different priorities and expectations in life than previous generations. They face many challenges in a highly demanding and competitive society. While parents journey with their children through different phases of life, they can easily feel helpless – for circumstances beyond their control and hurdles they cannot avoid. We need to cast our cares upon the Lord in order to learn and grow along this parenting journey. With this in mind, Presence started the Presence Parent Prayer Ministry this year, with monthly prayer meetings
from March to December. The vision for this ministry is for participating parents to be empowered by the Holy Spirit through prayers and to see their children and family grow in the right path with the Lord’s grace. We also hope this ministry would become a movement, allowing parents near and far to pray for our next generation with the help of our prayer guidelines posted on our blog. The best way to love our children is to lift them up to the Lord and pray that they will continually walk with a solid foundation of faith.

When We Seek the Lord An Interview with Pastor Jim Walden on Christian Identity and a Life with Purpose Wicy Zhang / Judd Hu
We were privileged to interview Pastor Jim Walden, speaker for the upcoming RE:NEW Faith Seminar, about identity and the meaning of a purposeful life. Here are our interview highlights:
Pastor Jim Walden
Jim defines identity as “the nature and essence of a person” which is more than a person’s outward appearance but what God creates that person to be. When it comes to discovering identities, Jim empathized with the youth since it has become harder for them to find their identities nowadays with the the prominent influence of Hollywood celebrities, successful business people, and politicians. According to Jim, “We can discover identity by knowing who the Creator is and who Jesus Christ is.” Jim quoted Psalm 103:7 and explained, “The people of Israel know God by seeing His deeds and actions, but Moses knows why God does what He does. It is much greater to see not only what happens but why God loves, why God creates, why God gives me a plan, and how He is going to lead me. I am passionate to challenge people to find His ways as Moses does in Exodus 33, asking God to show His glory in their lives.” Jim shared that, in order to find the purpose in life, there are four things to keep in mind. “Firstly, we have to have an open heart to God.” He pointed out that no one can please God without faith according to Hebrews 11:6, and we have to believe God has a plan for
us. “Secondly, I believe that the Holy Spirit speaks through the Word of God. We have to know the Word and walk accordingly. Thirdly, we should have people who walk with God and are able to speak into our lives. Finally, God uses circumstances and events to open doors and provide opportunities” for us to know our purpose. When asked about the difference between passion and calling, Jim recalled a very difficult time when he was serving at a church during seminary. His dad called and asked him, “Is there anything else you can do besides being a pastor and be happy?” Jim replied, “Dad, I would not know joy unless I am a pastor.” He knew that God designed him to be a pastor because of his insatiable love for the Word of God and for people. “Once you know that you are called, you know joy like nothing else, and you will survive the struggle and trials, regardless of being called to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, plumber, athlete...” Jim Walden has been the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church of Temple City for five years. He, his wife Diona, and son Gabe are living in San Gabriel Valley. Once again, he will be speaking at the RE:NEW Faith Seminar 2017, which will be held on November 3rd at CEFC on the topic “Faith and Purpose.” For more information, and for the full interview with Pastor Jim Walden, please visit RE:NEW’s website: www. renewtheresponse.org.

Jim
Jim
