Cultivate in Faith,
President’s Word
Work with Love
Agnes Ip
In the beginning, Presence received
a vision from God and since then, we have
diligently learned to respond in faith over
the years. Without realizing it, we have matured, moving from the “Envisioning”, “Growing”, “Standing”, to the “Expanding” stage. Looking back on these past ten years
of ministry, I believe we have followed the Lord’s leading and have sought to pave a
new road in ministry. Only by depending on the Lord’s power in the next ten years can
we continually uphold the original vision God gave us and move into this next stage of
“Integrating” Presence’s ministry concept of raising a new generation of servant leaders!
Today, we would like to express our
heartfelt gratitude to those in the community
and the body of Christ who have consistently supported us in the past. Let us recount
Presence’s past ten years together by listening to the sentiments of our co-workers
and volunteers, the feedback of our event

Heartfelt
Gratitude...
Thank God for granting us a big “Presence” family. In the past decade, every family member of Presence, with the growing hope for God’s kingdom, is willing to cultivate in faith, to work with love, and to dedicate constantly and selflessly; thus, we are proud of you and would like to give you endless gratitude! In 2002, God gave the vision of Presence to our founder, Mrs. Agnes Ip. During the past decade (2003 – 2013), God was in the different stages, gradually expanding the horizons of our ministry, and adding different ministry teams to us: - 2003, July to December - the first ministry team; composed of three members as a strategic planning team. - 2003-2007 - the second ministry team; a group of “Presence’s Youth Leadership Training” trainers. - 2004 November to present - the third ministry team; our Board of Directors. - 2005 to present - the fourth ministry team; our part time and full-time staff, co-workers, and countless volunteers. - 2006 to present - the fifth ministry team; partnering professionals and our speakers. - 2010 to present - the sixth ministry team; our co-workers and volunteers of the “Presence Family Magazine” editorial department. - 2011 to present - the seventh ministry team; youth workers and volunteers of RE:NEW, a Presence movement. - 2012 to present - the eighth ministry team; our co-worker and volunteers of “Presence Hong Kong” - 2013 - the ninth ministry team; our co-worker and volunteers of “Presence Possibilities” Looking back on the last ten years of Presence’s ministry, we see many blessings and many challenges. In addition to the difficulties of searching for ministry direction, we were also often constrained by insufficient financial resources, which led to frequent staff changes. Thanks go out to our directors, staff, and volunteers, who have served with persistence over many years. We have served the Lord with one heart at Presence, responding to God’s calling. We also thank all the various churches, Christian organizations, private organizations, individuals, and groups who have partnered with “Presence” for their continual dedicated support and donation! Without all these confirmations of Presence’s vision, and this full participation and selfless dedication, today’s Presence would not exist. We hope you can continually pray, give suggestions and continue to offer your full support. Because of you, tomorrow’s Presence can continue to stand for family, faith, and culture ministries for the kingdom of God, raising a new generation of servant leaders!
Sincerely, The Board of Presence September 2013
2003-2013
After 10 years of ministry, it’s about time for us to count our blessings, to look back on the birth and growth of Presence, to feel the challenges of today’s world, and to respond to our calling from the Lord!

A Ten-Year Review of Presence’s Ministry
— Serving as Pioneers, Living to Serve Agnes Ip
On the last night of March 2002, I had a dream... Three different generations of youth battled peer pressure and worldly influences, and in turn each generation was losing ground. Because of the increasing weakening of Christcentered beliefs and values, young people assimilated into the secular culture around them represented by a muddy yellow color. They became conformed to the world around them. This muddy, yellow color spread from cities to towns to provinces, steadily engulfing the world. I wanted to protect these youth in my dream and worldly powers attacked me from every direction.

| Presence 10th Anniversary Edition
Presence’s Birth (2003) From this God-given vision in September 2003, I went on to establish Presence. The purpose was to help churches and families understand that our children and youth are undergoing a spiritual crisis. We all need to work together to save our youth from being swallowed by the world. Finally, on November 15, 2004, Presence became a formally registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Los Angeles.
Envisioning (2003-2006) In order to help children and youth live according to God’s will in today’s society, we need to do more than teaching individuals about the Christian faith and values. We also need to increase our understanding of the complex cultural system in which we live and how our beliefs are impacted by our network of interpersonal relationships. In July 2003, I finished constructing Presence’s core concept model. Creative improvisational techniques have been incorporated to: 1) help train youth and their parents to improve their attitudes and skills in handling interpersonal dynamics; 2) to enhance the parent-child bonding relationship, and; 3) to prepare the family unit by helping parents and children use flexible ways to respond to societal and cultural challenges. During these years, I kept praying and asking the Holy Spirit to help me understand the deeper meaning of controversial social issues and to grant me wisdom in responding to conflicts between culture and our faith. In the summer of 2006, God miraculously placed me among a group of Hong Kong frontier organizations visiting America. I joined them on visits to a number of leading
Christian organizations. God had prepared special training for me to strategically protect the faith. For Presence, this laid the foundation for future ministries.
Growing (2007-2008) During these visits, I heard with my own ears the words of Christopher Yuan, a Chinese-American formerly gay brother, and his mother. They shared their life-changing testimony. I learned that Brother Yuan relied on the Holy Spirit to overcome the control of his sexual drive; he focused on his Christian identity and was willing to live a holy life. That day, Christopher and his mom immediately accepted my invitation to speak for Presence. Since then, they have partnered with Presence on two other occasions. They gave their beautiful testimonies at many Chinese churches in both Southern and Northern California. They led more than a hundred people to Christ. At the same time, I personally accepted invitations from leaders of different denominations traveling from East to West, urgently telling everyone that marriage and family values were being seriously attacked. Presence’s staff helped a few mainstream Christian organizations protect the faith by quickly translating their material into Chinese and Spanish. We used various means to pass on the message to approximately 250 Chinese churches. During this period of time, Presence’s ministry was on the defense against cultural attack. Acting as a bridge between mainstream organizations and Chinese churches, we took on a pioneering role of responding to social issues.
Standing (2009-2010) In order to go deeper in our response to the challenges of being a Christian in today’s culture, we also began to provide training for pastors and church leaders. We provided legal seminars to Chinese ministry leaders on defending the faith, seminars on how to care for those struggling with gender issues, and talks on preventing sexual harassment.
To uphold Christian family and marriage values, we started publishing the Presence Family Magazine; hosted many family conferences and newlywed retreats; explored gender issues through a faith seminar for youth called “Hope and Love”; held Sunday school classes on personal bias, interpersonal dynamics, and faith; and provided training to address different life stages for families, such as Focus on the Family’s “Journey to Intimacy” for women and mothers, along with the “How to Be a Good Man” day retreat for men.
Expanding (2011-2013) Deepening our work in “Family, Faith and Culture,” we strengthened our education programs for the church and family to address intergenerational and intercultural understanding. For example, in response to mental health problems becoming more common in families today, Presence hosted seminars titled “Internet Addiction” and “To Explore the Truth of Video Games.” We also provided a training program for caring ministry leaders called “Personal Growth for Caring Ministry Workers” and a seminar called “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy—A Self-Help Seminar for People Struggling with Mild Depression and Anxiety.” In June 2011, we established the RE:NEW youth ministry department. Through creative ministry, we trained leaders to serve the community. We published a youth magazine, and we increased faith training by organizing youth seminars called “Answering the Atheist” and “Understanding Islam.” For Christian high school students, we provided a youth mentorship program called Campus Representatives Initiative and the Forty-Day Impact Challenge. In February 2012, we established the Presence Hong Kong organization, providing training and services to local Hong Kong churches and communities. In May 2012, Presence used the new name of “Presence Quotient” for our training division, because it reflected more accurately our training to youth and families that enhances their Emotional Quotient (EQ), Moral Quotient (MQ), Adversity Quotient (AQ), Creativity Quotient (CQ), Leadership Quotient (LQ), and Spiritual Quotient (SQ). Our ministry continues to focus on Biblical values and attitudes to promote personal, family and community growth. In September 2013, we launched Presence Possibilities for students and young working adults, providing them with strengths and personality testing along with career path and professional assessment services. We combined youth and family ministry with career ministry in order to benefit churches and communities and provide them with integrated services.
Integrating (2014+)
Our mission is to help believers integrate their Christian faith into every aspect of life. The main objectives of Presence in the future will be to: 1) Focus on combining spiritual and practical skills by helping the church and family face societal and secular challenges; 2) Empowering youth with practical training in apologetics and mental health and 3) Providing ministry workers with diverse training courses. We hope to raise a new generation of servant leaders who will use their lives to serve God and their community.

leaders. Education and training has become our core ministry. We cover areas of social culture, family life and faith challenges. All these
training events are to be coordinated by our Presence Quotient division. Presence Quotient was established to provide holistic training to churches, families and individuals. We use the word “Quotient” as it involves education on Intelligence Quotient, Emotional Quotient,

Personal Growth Series This training integrates faith and psychology, to help you identify your attachment pattern and life-stage objectives. In the process, you will discover more about your strengths and values; and also learn how to set healthy boundaries. This self growth will help prevent unnecessary projection and manipulation in interpersonal and caring relationships. It’s designed for pastoral staff, professional counselors, small group leaders, lay counselors, those in caring or visitation ministry and all believers who seek personal growth.
Bridging the Two Generations - Church and Family This topic can be focused on family life or church life. For families, the training focuses on promoting harmony between two generations by understanding their differences in thinking, culture and temperament. For churches, we will discuss ways of establishing healthy working relationships between the two generations for those in ministry.

Understanding 8 Types of Learning Styles This workshop is designed to help parents identify each child’s personal strengths and learning style. When this knowledge is properly applied to their studies, students will be able to reach their maximum potential and have better morale. This not only results in a more successful career path for the students but also produces less conflict and better communication between the two generations.

Learner’s feedback on Phoenix Alliance Church’s Couples Retreat by Phillip Lowe
“I enjoyed Phillip’s workshop a lot. He’s a resourceful speaker, and the content of his workshop was very practical and interesting. He helped us understand the importance of communication in our marriage, encouraged us to love our spouse more, talk to each other directly, always remember to express thankfulness, and learn how to forgive and ask for forgiveness. I was touched and impressed by the exercises we did in the workshop.”
Different Learning Styles for Kids “Agnes teaches very professionally. She made me realize raising children is not the same compared to raising the last generation. We need to understand our children’s learning styles and accept their uniqueness in order to motivate them to learn. That, in turn, will promote better communication and mutual respect between parents and children.”
The Future Direction of “Presence Quotient” “Presence Quotient” will continue to feel the heartbeat of this generation, and provide appropriate training series to churches, communities and families. We hope to partner more with churches and organizations and customize our training series to meet their needs. If God allows, we do hope that we can also train and equip trainers so that more communities can be benefitted from our resources.
Moving from a Job to the Ministry
Joanne Wong
The year before I joined Presence, I was feeling lost and empty, and I lacked fulfillment at work. Because of this, I prayed to God, asking Him how I could serve Him. Later, I learned that Presence was hiring but that the pay would be much lower than what I was earning at the time. After much prayer, I was filled with peace about the situation and joined Presence as their ministry coordinator. My work with Presence is my first full-time ministry job. Over the past 18 months, the trials that I have experienced—personally, in my family and at work—are beyond imagination. There are always better resources and better-defined job descriptions at well-established private companies. For nonprofit organizations with very limited material and human resources, the situation is totally different. I had to make significant adjustments when I began working at Presence. For example, there was a period of time during which I had to provide my own drinking water because we could not afford a water dispenser. Whenever I work alone in the office, I do not turn on the air conditioner in order to save power. It is easy to become troubled when the organization struggles financially, but I have learned to cast all my cares before the Lord, and I realize that God’s grace and provision always carry us in amazing ways to overcome many different hurdles. Presence’s ministry remains very meaningful, despite the difficulties. I have lots of opportunities to learn and be trained. Being able to help others through various ministries also brings me comfort, joy and satisfaction. In this ministry, I have gradually found what I lacked before: purpose and satisfaction in my life. The path of ministry is not an easy one. It is full of thorns along the way. I keep learning how to be creative and persevere. But the most important lesson I’ve learned is to pray unceasingly and allow God to lead and comfort me. This is how we can get through the highs and lows. We can always taste the sweetness of God’s grace after the storms. May this be an encouragement to those who also serve God through ministry.

An Extension of the Educational and Cultural Mission
Presence was established with a vision to educate the next generation. It is our dream, our mission
and our burden. To fulfill this mission, it takes more than just ministering to the youth. We also need to create a healthy family environment; develop a good relationship between two different generations raised in different cultures; take a stand against current social moral standards; have a strong faith; and desire to be healed, renewed and experience growth in our hearts — all these are interrelated and part of our vision in education.
In light of this great need, what Presence can do is limited. The publishing ministry started with a
desire to connect with churches and believers. Through our regular newsletter, we aimed to share about our ministries. Since we had a great response, we then took a big step by providing our family magazine for free. By doing so, we hope to use our Christian values, together with psychological theories and personal testimonies, to help families respond to current social issues. Through reflection on our lives and family values, we can all grow in a healthy way. In response to church needs, we also provide a yearly publication addressing issues on faith and church life. By initiating a discussion, we hope to create meaningful conversations among churches and pastors.
Moreover, readers have responded positively to our booklets and tracts about parenting and mental
health.
We thank God that even though our sources are limited and we are trembling when facing the
challenges of today’s culture, our publishing ministry would like to continue furthering this mission. In the next decade, we hope to enlarge our tent and publish more materials for training and educational purposes; and to reach out to more culturally diverse groups.

My Journey with Presence
Cindy Eng
Around the time my oldest son started high school, I was introduced to
Presence by Lily Ma, who was helping with Presence’s publication. It has been more than four years since I have become a Presence volunteer, and since I first enjoyed the free dinner at their 2009 fundraising event.
Asian immigrants pay a lot of attention to the second generation’s
academic performance, especially new immigrants. Parents often give up their careers and homeland, leave their country and emigrate to the United States, with only one purpose in mind—to seek better educational opportunities for their children. Due to cultural differences between the two generations, however, conflicts accrue. Sometimes parents may not understand their children’s needs, or children do not recognize the sacrifices their parents made. When the children get to the rebellious stage of their teenage years, if there is a lack of proper communication, it can be a disaster.
When I heard of Agnes’ dream for the first time, I had three teenagers at
home facing all kinds of challenges. It seemed I was lost in the sea and someone just threw me a lifeline. I hoped an organization like Presence Quotient could guide our youth in their daily and spiritual lives toward the right path, so that one day they could become instruments for God.
Praise God that my oldest son graduated and has been working for more
than a year. He attended Presence’s youth leader training and also contributed written submissions to the magazine. Our second son also helped out with English editing and participated in Re:new events. Our 20-year-old son was able to walk away from internet addiction. My husband is also willing to learn to be a spiritual leader in the family. All these are the fruits of Presence’s ministries. I hope Presence can continue to focus on the needs of this young generation and help more families toward a blessed journey. Glory to God in the highest!

ministry report
re: NEW Phoebe Ng In 2009, Presence hosted its first youth seminar, “Hope & Love.” Two years later, in late June of 2011, RE:NEW was birthed and a new season of growth began. Struck by the pressing need to come alongside youth and instill in them biblical values while challenging them to pursue their full potential in Christ, RE:NEW took its first step toward meeting this goal by launching a full-color youth magazine. A few weeks later, on Thanksgiving day, with the help of one designer and two web developers, renewtheresponse.org was made available to the public. Just one month later and a few days after Christmas, a small core group of the volunteers behind the RE:NEW Team attended their first conference, Chinese Missions Conference West Coast, promoting their new budding ministry to over 2,750 people!
Faith Seminar - Understand Islam “I liked the speaker Alan Shlemon very much. He was very informative and focused a lot on the Bible; his presentation was very thoughtful and insightful, too. We learned the differences between Christians and Muslims. The worship and praise was uplifting! Loved the refreshments! Thanks a bunch for organizing this, RE:NEW!!” Answering the Atheist “In this seminar, I learned about the objections and arguments made by atheists, their views on science versus religion, and began to understand that we cannot simply convert atheists to Christians; we have to take baby steps by sharing God’s love and truth.”

In 2012, the RE:NEW Volunteer Team continued to promote its ministry work and resources to churches and fellowship groups across the San Gabriel Valley. The team held its first vision-sharing banquet, released the second issue of its magazine, hosted a faith seminar on the topic of the Islamic faith, which was attended by more than ten church groups and 250 young people, and most importantly, pioneered its first training program, the Campus Representatives Initiative (CRI), a leadership development program that pairs high school students and college freshman with volunteer mentors to embark on a faith journey from September to April for the purpose of equipping and mobilizing a new generation of leaders, marking a new era of growth and specialized resource development. The success of RE:NEW’s previous faith seminar was mirrored by a Dating Seminar in early 2013, which was followed by the launch of RE:NEW’s second training program, the Forty-Day Impact Challenge, a time for participants to set aside 40 days of their lives to press into the Lord and seek his will and kingdom purpose for their lives. This training program was met with smashing success and involved over 100 participants, both over the course of the 40 days and during the closing praise night held on the final day of the Challenge. During this time, CRI would also officially come to a close, graduating seven students and raising up seven mentors for future ministry work. In total, RE:NEW has organized or been a part of over 16 events, which has serviced around 4,800 people! What a blessed two years it has been and with many more to come! For the rest of 2013, our core team of volunteers, which now measures just shy of 30 people, will be working hard to launch the CRI program and the Forty-Day Impact Challenge for a second time. Moreover, the third issue of our magazine is already under production and set for release in September 2013 with our next faith seminar on the Christian Worldview close on its heels on October 18, 2013. In the coming years we also hope to facilitate local and overseas missions opportunities as well as to actively equip and train the new generation in the discipline of apologetics. May the Lord continue to bless our labor of love!
Personal Reflection Phoebe Ng
I first found out about Presence in the summer of 2011 when my mom showed me an email that listed a job opportunity in the English ministry department. Like most other recent graduates I was struggling to find a job, and the idea of doing ministry and getting paid for it seemed rather glamorous at the time. I promptly sent in my resume and went through a phone interview, during which time I realized that my interviewer was the mother of one of my college roommates! Seeing God’s handiwork paving the way for my start at Presence and finding favor in the eyes of my interviewer and other Presence staff, I joyfully began working at Presence in late June 2011. My first task was to hold a meeting with the three volunteers I was given and to discuss how we could create a faith-based youth magazine. Almost two years later, those three volunteers have blossomed into twenty-five dedicated team members and the faith-based youth magazine has expanded into multiple training programs and regular community events with numerous publications and media productions in the works. Praise the Lord!
Of course, the journey to this point was not an easy one. In all honesty, almost nothing came easily for us. There were so many times when our team faced spiritual attack from all sides and felt scattered and not unified. Recently however, we have been so privileged to have had more chances to interact with one another both face to face and via the internet. These times of prayer and fellowship have been a big blessing to me personally and have served as a huge source of encouragement to many of us as we are able to share with one another the ways the Lord is moving in our lives. Moreover, I can honestly say that during my time with Presence the Lord has truly become my daily bread and sustenance. Looking back on the experience, I would have to admit that these past two years were probably some of the most trying times of my life, and I would have never made it on my own strength. However, I am extremely grateful for my time at Presence, as it allowed me to develop a slew of practical skills, make so many new friends, and most importantly has placed me in a position to directly impact a generation of young people. Overall, I can say that this is so much more than a job to me and it has possibly been the most growing experience of my life.

Transforming Power of the Gospel - in Life and in Families
Mandy Cheung
I first heard of Presence when Agnes came to speak at our church about how to manage emotions. Later, Presence also co-sponsored a family conference with our church. I became more interested in the organization because I got the impression that it was trying very hard to meet the needs of today’s Chinese churches. Soon after, I started dating and learned that my boyfriend, who is now my husband, was a volunteer at Presence. He liked to share with me the fun experiences and the lessons he learned working with Presence’s team, which showed me even further that Presence is indeed a good organization. I then decided to volunteer for Presence too. Since I am good at planning, I have had a lot of opportunities to work with different coworkers and departments at Presence. Gradually I have come to feel a sense of belonging among the others at the organization. What makes me truly committed to Presence is its overall mission and in particular, the birth of the RE:NEW movement, its youth program. The goals and programs of Presence and of RE:NEW resonated with my own story. My parents were and are still nonbelievers, but they put me in a Christian elementary school when I was young. Like those who grew up attending church, I heard the gospel on many occasions but did not fully understand it at the time. When I was in fourth or fifth grade, I met two good friends who, unlike most of our other classmates, were beautifully simple, happy, secure and humble. They always reminded me not to get angry and shared with me their life philosophy of avoiding hypocrisy. I later found out that they and their parents were all Christians. I could see the transforming power of the gospel in these young girls and their families. It helped me realize that I too was only a helpless sinner. Their lives reflected that what they believed was real. It made me also want to accept Jesus as my personal Savior. My life was never the same afterward. Even though we were separated later in life and they did not realize my conversion had anything to do with them, we still connect with one another and have become spiritual sisters in this journey of faith. Based on my experiences, family support is crucial to one’s Christian walk. Healthy Christian families are so important to the younger generation. This world places so much emphasis on tolerance; people do not believe in absolute truth. Because of this, members of the younger generation face tremendous challenges in their faith journey. For example, I did not find it surprising when Phoebe, the RE:NEW director, shared that 60% of people who grow up in church stop attending when they reach adulthood. Family support, and ministries like Presence, can help bring the next generation back to Christ and ensure that they are deeply rooted in the faith. Presence’s role is to equip believers to be the urban missionaries and to make an impact for Christ in today’s culture. Whether through the CRI, the youth leadership program which encourages high school students to witness to their peers at school, or through a healthy family relationship, God can use you and me to be a witness for the power of the gospel in this world.

My Journey with Presence Lorraine Yang I became involved with Presence as a volunteer, and it was during that time that I found my passion for serving the Lord. I enjoyed Presence’s events and its philosophy about the importance of instilling Christian values in families and youth. Every event that Presence held was thoroughly planned, and they were distinct from other events I had attended in that the speakers were real about their struggles. I always left with hope and practical wisdom for my own life. In the summer of 2012, when I was desperately looking for a job, God miraculously opened the door for me at Presence. I actually had no idea I was in for an interview when I went to the office for a visit. I now work part-time here, mostly with Phoebe for RE:NEW, the youth division. I really enjoy getting to be a part of such a needed movement in this generation as we host events and invite speakers to challenge and educate young people from a biblical perspective. At my job, I get to use my creativity and passion to create webbanners and artwork, to film and edit event recap videos, to call up youth pastors to invite them to our events and more. I’m thankful for the freedom to develop my creativity and learn how to use these mediums for God’s glory. Our work environment is filled with laughter and encouragement and it brings me joy to work with a group of young, passionate, dedicated coworkers. One thing this job has really taught me is the power of faith and prayer, as we have grown through times when we learned to trust God’s provision and leadership. Surely, we are confident that He who began this good work, the vision given to Agnes for Presence, will carry it on to completion. Check out our website, come join our events, and don’t miss out on what God’s doing through Presence. Thank you and God bless.

ministry report
Presence Hong Kong
Presence Hong Kong was established on February 6, 2012 by Presence with the goal of helping families in Hong Kong raise their next generation with a strong moral and spiritual foundation. Presence HK seeks to equip children, youth and parents to integrate their faith into their everyday lives. We incorporate biblical values and psychology into our teachings, and we also train church leaders to support families as they face the various challenges of different life stages in today’s world. In the past year, Presence HK has hosted 23 meetings and provided relevant trainings to churches and families, serving a total of 2,131 people. These meetings cover topics such as parenting, gender issues, dating and marriage, communication in marriage, prejudice and communities, the “iGeneration” (how youth are influenced by an increasingly technological culture), and personal growth. In the latter half of 2013, we are going to host additional series titled “Pre-Parenting,” “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” and “Personal Growth.”
24
| Presence 10th Anniversary Edition
Pre-Parenting This training is designed to prepare parents-to-be or those who are considering having children to learn about the transition of becoming a parent. As people approach parenthood, they need to be aware of the difficulties and challenges presented by this new stage of life, how they can integrate biblical values in raising their children, and how to still maintain a healthy marriage relationship at the same time.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – A Self-Help Guide for Those Suffering from Mild Depression and Anxiety Cognitive behavioral therapy is a well-recognized and widely-applied treatment in the field of psychotherapy. This training course helps participants identify how their thinking affects their emotions and behaviors. When they encounter emotional and behavioral issues, they can learn to trace and adjust the pertinent underlying thinking patterns in order to find relief from those problems. This course is for education purposes only and is not a therapy session.
Personal Growth Series Integrates faith and psychology to help you identify your pattern of attachment and life-stage objectives. In the process, you will discover more about your strengths and values and learn how to set healthy boundaries. This series will help prevent unnecessary expectations and manipulation in interpersonal and caring relationships. It has been designed for pastoral staff, professional counselors, small group leaders, lay counselors, those involved in caring or visitation ministry and all believers who seek personal growth.

Ling Fung
Ministry Coordinator of Presence Hong Kong
Having served in children’s ministries for some time now, I have witnessed many couples struggle with their relationship once they begin having children. Couples often focus on welcoming the newborn baby to their lives but fail to pay attention to the challenges and possible differences of opinion about how to raise their new child. This made me realize that pre-parenting counseling is just as important as pre-marital counseling. Expectant couples need training to prepare for the changes and challenges ahead. Sadly, I wasn’t able to find any pre-parenting materials available. In July 2012, I had the opportunity to meet with Agnes, Founder and President of Presence Hong Kong, and I learned much about its ministry and vision. Presence offers a wide variety of training seminars on topics from pre-parenting to parenting, youth leadership to career path development, dating to marriage, personal growth to retirement, and so on. Presence has teaching materials for every life stage to help Christians apply their beliefs in their daily lives. In Presence, I saw a new opportunity to serve the Lord and the Christian community, and I became the first volunteer staff member in Hong Kong. Though we have limited resources, we will follow God’s guidance and trust in His provision for the preparation of each training course. May God bless the brothers and sisters in Hong Kong through Presence and bring glory to Him by living out their faith in their families and everyday lives.

Future Ministry Plans The Birth of “Presence Possibilities” – Personal and Career Assessment and Consultation Services
Presence is excited to introduce our new initiative called Presence
Possibilities, a program that provides personal and career assessments along with consultation services to our community. One observation on today’s society is that youth lack direction, and with the economic downturn, graduates are unable to find jobs in their fields of study. We want to provide practical help to address the workrelated needs of Christians who seek to integrate their faith into their daily lives.
Vanessa Lai
Our consultants are ready to guide high school and college students to figure
out what types of career paths and/or areas of study that are most suitable for them. We do this by evaluating their personalities, styles, interests and abilities. Our clients fill out assessments and then go through our personal consultation, through which they will gain a better understanding of their uniqueness, and develop strategies to enhance their interpersonal and working relationships.
Presence Possibilities not only provides career consultation, but will also be
extending its services in the areas of marriage relationships, as well as spiritual gift assessments for church ministry.
As part of our comprehensive services, Presence will also be providing
training and resources alongside each of the areas as needed. Our career services provide information on colleges and particular occupations, training on CV/resumé writing, interviewing skills, and assertiveness development. We would also arrange our clients to talk to people who are working in the occupations they are considering.
We pray that through this initiative, the next generation will become better
equipped for the future and the services God has prepared for them, enabling them to utilize their talents and gifts to their fullest potential so that they may serve and lead in their communities. For details please visit www.PPossibilities.org.

Presence in the Eyes of
Pastors
and Professional
Counselors
We thank God for all the support and encouragement we’ve been given by local churches, pastors and leaders who have contributed to the overall growth of Presence. Numerous pastors and professional counselors have also participated in many of our ministry events, providing us with tremendous help, inspiration and support. They have all been good friends and ministry partners with Presence.
Presence in the Eyes of Pastors and Professional Counselors
Rev. Timothy Tin Rev. Timothy Tin, the Senior Pastor of Chinese Alliance Bible Church, is among the board members at Presence. Aside from his basic pastoral duties, Rev. Tin involves himself with church planting, community service, and discipleship training of different generations.
I came to know Presence through Agnes and her husband, Benny. The vision of Presence is very appealing to me. The conflict between the immigrants and the next generation is the current issue churches are facing nowadays. Presence focuses on the communication and merging of the two generations while concurrently highlighting the importance of preserving the faith of the youth. Presence creatively uses theatre arts to develop the youths’ characters. By grasping the pulse of the young generation, it develops a group of emotionally and spiritually mature successors for the church. Moreover, Presence always gives me the impression of having a sharp awareness of today’s culture and affairs. It walks in the forefront to explore the issues families and the youth are struggling with. This attribute is extremely precious and is not something an individual church can accomplish alone. Congratulations to Presence on its 10th year anniversary. I hope it can stand firm in its original vision, continue to educate families on the importance of values, and continue to use creative channels to lead the youth to lifelong maturity in God’s Kingdom.

Rev. Michael Wu Rev. Michael Wu is the Senior Pastor of San Gabriel Valley Alliance Church. Prior to this position, Rev. Wu served as the Executive Director of the Christian & Missionary Alliance’s Chinese Churches Association, taking care of the development of Chinese Alliance Churches and its mission work. Rev. Wu has been very supportive of Presence since its beginnings.
I have known Presence’s founder, Agnes, for many years. When Agnes felt called to start a ministry to serve the younger generation, she shared her dream and vision to a group of friends in ministry and I was one of them. I was excited to see Agnes’ passion to serve the next generation, while using creative theater to train the youth on moral values, character and interpersonal relationships in a biblical way. Presence is a special and unique ministry, offering practical guidance and skills to young married couples, parents and teenagers on Christian living. I think this is something not yet found in other Christian organizations. What Presence offers to families also helps relieve the church’s burden in their family ministries. Therefore, I do think that churches should support this organization. Presence has experienced a very challenging decade. I hope that it will continue to meet the needs of a new generation that will be facing all kinds of challenges in the next ten years. Society and culture will keep on changing. I pray that Presence can hold fast to its vision, always in touch with an ever-changing society and culture and witness to the world about the truth and the Gospel, which never changes.

Rev. Benson Wang Rev. Benson Wang is the Senior Pastor of Evangelical Formosan Church of LA. His ministry focuses on preaching, participating in different meetings, and leading the pastoral team and elders in growing and developing the church. Rev. Wang has a heart for the next generation. He initiated a ministry partnership between EFCLA and Presence. EFCLA also co-sponsored two events with Presence’s RE:NEW ministry for youth. Rev. Wang is a very respected partner of Presence, and his heart and his energy are deeply appreciated.
When I first heard about Presence, I was drawn to its bilingual family magazine. This is a very special publication because it caters to the needs of immigrant Chinese families, inviting two generations to read the magazine and learn together. This is indeed a great asset to Chinese churches, which are made up of mostly immigrants. I therefore took the initiative to contact Presence and eventually partnered with the organization to host two seminars directed toward youth at our church, one about understanding Islam and another about dating. The responses to these events were just great. Presence is unique because it helps immigrant parents better understand the next generation which, having been born in the United States, knows an entirely different culture. Presence strives to bridge the gap between generations and help them better connect and relate to one another. Presence’s events have greatly benefitted believers including our own congregations, and they offer good support to the church family ministry. I hope that Presence can go further in training pastoral staff as well as church leaders, equipping them to be leaders who have the practical skills to help believers grow personally and relationally. Presence has walked through the past ten years with hard work. Heading into another ten years, I pray that Presence will hold on to its very first vision and keep transforming and building even stronger relationships with Chinese churches so that we can walk together towards a brighter future.

Rev. Chris Yue Rev. Chris Yue is the Senior Pastor of the Chinese Grace Baptist Church in Monterey Park. Besides preaching, Rev. Yue works at different levels of pastoral ministries, including small group Bible studies, caring and counseling, as well as visitations. Under the leadership of Rev. Yue, Chinese Grace Baptist Church has become a solid partner with Presence and has hosted both youth and family events. I first learned about Presence through their e-newsletters and event posters. This organization has made a great impression on me. From their posters, I knew that their events involved quality content on counseling and family education that served both churches and communities. From my experience of ministering at different churches, I see the many needs of church people, such as the conflicts between both generations, mental illnesses among family members, and marriage problems. Oftentimes in these situations, we don’t know how to deal with it and care for people in a professional way, so Presence comes to the rescue and provides the resources we need. The members from our congregation have also indicated to me they have benefited a lot from attending Presence’s events. I praise God for the great work Presence has done in the past ten years. May God continue to bless and use Presence as His witness in this world.

Nick Tam Pastor Nick Tam has been serving as the Youth and Outreach Director at the Chinese Grace Baptist Church in Monterey Park for about four years. His main ministries at church include youth, discipleship, as well as campus outreach and community evangelism. We have been blessed by a great partnership with Pastor Nick at our RE:NEW youth events.
I first heard about Presence when I met one of the organization’s representatives at a monthly ministers association in Monterey Park about three years ago. I became more involved in Presence since their youth department, RE:NEW, was launched. I think God uses Presence in many ways, especially in light of their ministry that reaches out to both adults (or parents) and youths. This is something we do not normally see in many churches and is something I really appreciate about this organization. Connecting both generations in Chinese culture is not an easy job because both generations are quite different. I also enjoy the RE:NEW programs. I participated in some of their events, including seminars on faith and dating. I appreciate CRI (Campus Representatives Initiative), which was launched by RE:NEW and is a program that helps young men and women become better followers of Christ. I have high hopes for this program. Congratulations to Presence’s 10th Year Anniversary, and the fruits they have bore within the past 10 years! In the future, I’d like to see them grow bigger and better. I pray that they will continue with the good work they’ve done bridging the gap between two generations, and will work hand-in-hand with churches to make an impact in the Kingdom.

Annette Jewik Annette Jewik is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She currently holds two dream jobs, working as a part-time children’s minister at church and also serving at CCHC’s counseling division for ten hours a week. While counseling is Annette’s professional job, shaping the lives of children and laying a solid foundation in kids’ faith journeys has always been Annette’s first passion. Annette is Presence’s contracted speaker, and has been a very popular one for our parenting classes. She was also involved in our publication ministries through interviews and by sharing her professional experiences. Annette is a well-received speaker among churches and communities as well.
I learned about Presence from its founder, Agnes, when she invited me to be on Presence’s speaking panel. I was then involved in a few of the organization’s parenting workshops. To me, Presence is never static, continually striving to carve out its distinct identity among other established Chinese Christian organizations. With Agnes’ vision and educational background, Presence is providing what’s very much needed among believers and communities in today’s world. I also enjoy their educational publications. The recent production of mental health materials is a nice addition to their family magazines. I hope that more educational materials will be produced in the course of reaching out to American Born Chinese and youth. I am sure God will continue to provide a clear vision to Presence so that the ministry can be a light and beacon to this fallen world. Presence is a very dynamic organization, utilizing many good ideas to serve the community. Pray that in the days to come, Presence will continue to grow into an even more effective ministry to provide important services needed by our churches and communities.

In addition to her private practice, she also works for a nonprofit organization providing counseling services and supervision to the counseling team. Nicole is a Sunday school teacher at First Evangelical Church of San Gabriel Valley, and has also served in the capacities of deacon and small group leader. She also provides educational training on mental health to churches and communities. Nicole has contributed to Presence’s publication of materials on mental health and shared with us a lot of her precious clinical experiences on related topics.
I came to know Presence through Agnes, who is also in the counseling field. I admired
Agnes’ beliefs and energy in starting this organization. Being a counselor, I truly understand that education and preventive measures are crucial to the growth of healthy families and relationships. Traditional Asians are mostly reserved people. They do not easily seek help when problems arise. When they actually go to a counseling session, problems can be very severe already. I personally believe in education and prevention, and therefore could not agree more strongly with the vision of Presence. We frontline counselors do not always have the opportunity to provide these educational and preventive services.
I like Presence’s bilingual Family Magazine. The lively content has brought quality education
to families and communities. I also appreciate the events and seminars that Presence has organized. These activities cater very well to the practical needs of today’s younger generation and their families. It is also a joy to see so many young men and women volunteering and participating in Presence’s ministry. Presence is indeed a good platform to raise the next generation and grow them into maturity. In the days to come, I wish to see Presence become more focused and continue to serve churches and families with quality products and activities. When people start small businesses, it is not easy to keep it running beyond ten years. While it is a joy that Presence is celebrating its tenth anniversary, it also means Presence is entering a new season of development. I wish Presence, in this next phase, would listen more to the heartbeat of the communities it serves, walk closer with churches and Christian organizations, build a strong and long-term ministry team, seek and develop successors to run the future race, and continue to be an organization that exemplifies integrity, transparency and godly stewardship of resources. By continuing to be sensitive to the needs of the surrounding community and devoting itself to God’s purposes, Presence can reach its greatest potential to serve this generation and to impact both believers and nonbelievers alike!

Walking with Presence
Overcoming Fear in Ministry
Agnes Ip
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
(Joshua 1:9)
As the founder and volunteer president of Presence, I do three things every day: first, I depend on God. Second, I fight against fear. Third, I do my best to finish the work for that day. I thank God for His mercy and for helping me learn how to take up my own cross daily and walk with him. Even today, God is still working in my own heart through Presence’s ministry. He has gradually eliminated the impurities in my life and helped me trust His presence.
Crying to Seek God’s Will Earlier in my life, during a time when I was seeking God’s calling, every few days, I would wake up in the middle of the night and the Holy Spirit would urge me to pray for this generation. Often during Sunday worship, the Holy Spirit would move me again and I would involuntarily cry. This lasted for several months, ceasing right before Presence was established.
Learning Obedience and Overcoming Negative Emotions In 2000, during the final semester before I finished my Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, my husband, Benny, constantly urged me to mentally prepare myself to go back to Hong Kong. At that time, in my heart, I knew God wanted me to stay in America and that He had a mission for me. I asked Benny not to force me to go back, but he did not accept my ideas and was very angry. Our marriage became very tense, and we tried to find friends and counselors to help us, but we could not see a way out. My heart and soul
36
| Presence 10th Anniversary Edition
were in pain, and I could only pray and fast to resolve all the negative emotions and thoughts I had. Finally, I reluctantly agreed to return to Hong Kong with my husband. After I was willing to obey my husband, God gave him a dream in which he saw all the people in Hong Kong with whom we closely ministered uniting to serve together as one army, and each couple in the dream, one by one, told him not to go back to Hong Kong. Benny obeyed God and was willing to stay. In the days that followed, he gave me endless support!
Dissolving the Terror of Being Shot Down First In 2002, when I knew God wanted me to serve in a more public ministry, in my mind, I often thought of the Chinese saying, “The first bird that sticks its head out gets shot first.” Knowing there would be a possibility of being rejected by other people, I felt very afraid! During my elementary and junior high school years, I was rejected by many of my classmates, and I still remembered how my heart felt frightened back then. The Lord knew this was an obstacle in my life and led me to learn improvisational theater in New York. Through this, God granted me wonderful perspective about my entire life story, so that I no longer had to live in the shadow of my past, held back by the fear of being rejected. My heart was suddenly filled with gratitude and hope. I had a vision that God would nurture me to become a strong tree, not easily blown down by wind, and which would continue to grow and become a towering tree, and a safe ha-
ven for many birds to sojourn. I knew this was a metaphor for my ministry—that God would enable me to help many ministers, providing them with a platform to serve the Lord. From 2007 to 2010, because of Presence’s spiritual values and its voice in the community, our website has been attacked twice and we have also received some unfriendly emails. But under God’s protection, we keep the faith and move forward.
Overcoming the Inadequacy and Pressure of the Language Barrier Early on in Presence’s ministry, I used improvisational theater techniques to train children. But all the training was done in English, and I had to bite the bullet, using my “shabby” English with the kids. During the training, I had to constantly ask for help from coworkers who grew up in the United States. During every lesson, children would correct my accent. I remember that, during Presence’s first few years, I lived under the daily pressure of knowing that my language skills were insufficient. English became my number one enemy. At that time, every English e-mail and article sent out by Presence, as well as our nonprofit organization application form, required countless hours to write, numerous revisions and proofreading by many volunteers. Only after this long process would I have peace of mind to send out materials. Thanks to God’s blessing in the past few years, during my studies and internship training as a Doctoral student in Clinical Psychology, I was able to use English often to counsel others, and in the last two years, I have also begun to use English more confidently to teach others through Presence.
Praying for the Ministry’s Direction The core concept model of Presence focuses on responding to how our diverse culture impacts personal growth and helping people use their faith to handle the challenges of daily life. Our philosophy about training children and adolescents is that we must respond to families, schools, churches, society and the culture of the present time in order to understand the value system that will impact them. For many years, I was anxious and struggled to find an appropriate way to address societal and cultural issues. I was often in prayer and listening to con-
firm God’s will, so that I could nail down the direction of the ministry. Because the cultural issues involved were so overwhelming, and because there seemed to be no examples to follow, my heart often became discouraged by this daunting task. I would ask myself, “Why do I have to do this?” I felt helpless, even terrified, as I called on God for an open door. In early 2011, I heard God say to me, “You will become a ‘Sarah’!” He told me that I would proclaim the truth to our youth and that God would cause them to accept my teachings because they would hear God’s voice for themselves! Because of God’s promises, in June of that same year, RE: NEW was born, so that we could further expand our youth ministry.
Transcending Insufficiencies through Faith The biggest challenge in Presence’s ministry is having faith in the midst of financial difficulties! For a long time, Presence lacked regular, fixed donations, which impaired the ministry. Due to our lack of funding, our manpower changed frequently, making difficult our human resources management, ministry planning and establishing a budget. Whenever we had a turnover of coworkers, our volunteer workers also changed. Due to the economic downturn, Benny and I reached a point at which we could no longer financially support Presence on our own. For many years, I lived in fear of insufficiency and my heart felt weary, occasionally discouraged and sad. What made me most worried was the possibility of not being able to pay salaries to Presence’s staff, and that their lives would be negatively affected. Because of our money shortage, our organization could not fully develop. We even had to give up part of the ministry—we were forced to reduce publication of the Presence Family Magazine and the RE:NEW Magazine to one issue each year. Although the ministry has had to adapt, we still thank God for this past decade, during which Presence has been able to pay the wages of all of its staff. As the ministry grows each day, I must also increase my trust in God’s work. In the days ahead, I have to continue to fight to overcome my own fears. I hope that God touches you in the next ten years to become a helper and ministry partner with Presence, and that you will pray for me and Presence, that God would bless us!

Walking with Presence
My Journey With Presence Katy Lee
When I first heard about Presence, I was attracted to its vision to help parents raise
the next generation with Biblical values. I shared the same burden as I saw worldly, cultural influences negatively affecting the family, so I started to volunteer in helping develop the parenting ministry.
As I got to know Agnes more and Presence’s broader vision, I learned that
Presence is called to more than equipping parents. It seeks to come alongside the church and community to serve in various avenues to strengthen the family. It provides resources and workshops to church leaders, to newlyweds, couples with children, teenagers and others. It stays up-to-date with current issues affecting families, addresses them, and calls people to pray.
As Presence grew, the Lord opened up opportunities to focus more on youth.
With the cooperation of many churches, I helped start the work that has today grown to be RE:NEW.
One of the most memorable events for me was the first one we put together for the
youth to address homosexuality. It was 2009 and the topic was still fairly new to Chinese churches. God provided us with two former practicing gay men whose testimonies at the “Hope & Love” event deeply touched the young people in the audience. There were more attendees than I expected, and our use of the venue at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills was free! I saw how God always provides all that we need to do the work that He has planned for us.
Recently, I saw God provide more leadership for RE:NEW, involving more young
people using their creativity to reach peers.
I thank God for the opportunity I have to contribute to the vision of influencing
the next generation to live out their faith in God. Every effort, big or small, by everyone at Presence, works together to accomplish God’s purposes.

Walking with Presence
Filled with Blessings Maggie Hui When I look back, I feel a special connection with Presence, and of course, as a Christian, I also see the amazing leading of the Lord. Ten years ago, I moved to work in Los Angeles after I graduated from college. While I was still searching for a church, I met Agnes for the first time at a fellowship meeting. She shared about her dream to start a ministry that would serve the next generation and immigrant families. I was completely drawn to her vision. Eventually I settled down at First Evangelical Church at Diamond Bar and, to my surprise, found that Agnes was also attending this church. At her invitation, I became a volunteer at Presence, one of the first groups of volunteers at the organization. When we began to serve at Presence, the volunteers usually spent a lot of time meeting and exploring new ideas for ministry, trying to better understand the needs of youths and their families. As the organization was so new and not known to many people, we experienced some challenging, faith-growing moments from time to time. For example, we once hosted an event called “Love Languages,” which was designed to serve at least ten families. As the event date drew near, only two or three families had registered. We had no choice but to pray and wait upon our Lord for His help, telling Him that we wanted to see at least half of our goal met. In the end, five families attended the event. Our prayer was answered specifically and amazingly. That has taught us to understand this crucial lesson: there was no way we could effectively serve at Presence without prayer. In the beginning, I was a counselor with Presence’s Youth Leadership Training (YLT). Though I was supposed to mentor, give of myself and make sacrifices for the children in the program, I felt that I also gained a lot and learned some important life lessons for myself through my position. For

instance, I learned how to go beyond my frame or comfort zone to minister to others, and to look at situations from different angles. This has had a great impact on my personal life. Later I got married and became a mother. I gradually switched my role at Presence from that of volunteer to student. The greatest blessing to me was the retreat for new couples, at which Agnes provided counseling and advice. Not only did we learn about the attitudes and skills involved in the transition to married life, but we also found a support group of people at similar ages and life stages. We have been journeying and growing with this group of friends in the past several years, and we treasure their fellowship and encouragement so much. When we had our first child, we also started to participate in parenting classes. We have been able to apply some of the practical knowledge and skills from these classes in our lives and understand more about parenting as we raise our daughter. This has helped ease our stress of transitioning into parenthood. Today’s society and culture are continually changing. As parents, we do not always recognize the great challenges that our children are or will be facing. In order for us and for our next generation to stand firm as Christians in today’s culture, the role of Presence is very important. Obviously the burden and the challenge that Presence is facing are by no means easy, but the task is not impossible with God’s help. During my journey with Presence over the past ten years, I have been through a lot of seminars on faith. I believe that, equipped with the faith that Presence has developed in the past decade, Presence will continue to shine and build up the next generation and their families with biblical values. I look forward to walking with Presence for a few more decades.
Walking with Presence
The Four Fields of Presence - witnessing the different stages of growth Rebecca Kan By God’s grace, as an ordinary housewife, I have had the privilege of becoming the first paid staff at Presence. Agnes and I started off as prayer partners. Then I joined Presence as a volunteer, and became part of the staff later on. We served and battled shoulder to shoulder. She has become someone I look up to and follow. We have an intricate relationship because we are prayer partners, co-workers, friends, and fellow soldiers in the Kingdom. Looking back on all these experiences, I can testify that God is with Presence. He has expanded my horizons in ministry and strengthened my faith.
to, and a new milestone that God led us through. With God’s presence, we overcame challenges and barriers, despair and defeat. He flexed us. He toughened us. We became resilient. We were prepared for new territories ahead of us.
First Milestone (1st 口)
- Presence Ministry’s first office at Agnes’ home
It’s truly an open house. From the study to the kitchen, dining room to living room, Agnes opened her home for meetings, seminars, trainings, and even a theater house. During those days, I was with her all the time. I learned how to pray humbly on my knees. Agnes would call on God with floods of tears, or pray with confidence in His promises. Some days seemed endless or hopeless. We recognized that it was God’s way of molding us in His perfect timing. Even in her own home, Agnes never claimed herself as the ‘madam-in-charge’. She recognized God as the ultimate boss of Presence. He is the one who has the final say in the ministry. She lets go and lets God take charge. She lives what she preaches. It was a life lesson for me.
Agnes established Presence in response to an urgent need of raising a God-fearing generation that can stand firm within a culture that counters our faith. In 2006, after much prayer and with no hesitation, I accepted the challenge of joining Presence as staff. My previous shortterm mission experiences had exposed my weaknesses. In comparison, our next generation is much more equipped. They have English as their first language. They are welleducated with current knowledge and music, and cuttingedge technology. With love and reverence for God, our next generation can be a mighty force in the mission field. Though feeling quite inept, I beseeched God in prayer. I was willing to follow Agnes’ vision and be her right-hand helper.
Second Milestone (2nd 口) – Presence sublets a big office as ‘live-in’ tenant
During our Thanksgiving dinner last year, I shared that it’s by God’s grace that Presence is able to be present in this ‘field’, or geographic location today. (The Chinese character ‘field’「田」is comprised of four openings 口). During the past decade, Presence has moved its offices four times. Each move represented a new location He brought us
God amazingly used Presence as the opponent of California SB777. He opened up a new platform for us to serve churches by providing them the English and Spanish versions of the bill. In the process, we befriended many intellectual groups who were fighting the same battle. It’s encouraging to know Presence was not alone on the frontline.

Third Milestone
(3rd 口)
– Presence shares an office with another company The third milestone marked a joint venture with churches. Together, we organized evangelical meetings, youth leader training camps during the summer, and various ministries geared to American-born Asian teens. We also held seminars for church leaders and pastors. We enlisted legal advice from the Christian community on how to protect churches from lawsuits related to gay marriages. In addition, Presence actively sought partnerships with churches and sent speakers for Family Workshops for all ages. In partnership with churches, we served the community and reached out to families. By God’s grace, Agnes led by example. Coworkers and volunteer teams served as one with all their hearts. Serving has been bittersweet. I learned to sacrifice pleasure, and how to take pleasure in sacrifice. God is so gracious to me. I was blessed with precious friendships with the team of coworkers and volunteers. We challenged one another, like iron sharpens iron. Indeed, my joy and contentment are beyond words.
Fourth Milestone (4th 口)
– Presence becomes the sole tenant of the office - finally!
During this time, we compiled all seminar and workshop resources into CD & DVD formats. We published the Family Education Series and pamphlets. Our very first Presence Family Magazine went to press. Our resolution is to instill Christian values in the community. The RE:NEW Magazine, which is in English, also made its debut as a prime ministry for the new generation. Now, my role in Presence has changed again, from staff to volunteer in the Training Department. Our gracious God has opened up a new venue for me. I was able to use Focus on the Family’s “Journey to Intimacy for Women,” by Dr. Wei-Jen Huang to guide and care for a group of women. This caring ministry has gone beyond church boundaries. The Lord has extended my tent and brought me many new friendships from the community. How marvelous is our Lord! Our God does not ask for the “qualified” but for the willing. Trembling because of my weaknesses, I stepped out from my comfort zone. All I can do is remain faithful, press onward, persevere and not give up easily. Our God in heaven will walk beside me and guide me. Looking back, I might have boasted about my service for the sake of Presence. Now I gratefully and humbly say that Presence has ministered to me and enriched my life. Looking ahead at the next decade, may the Lord continue to use Presence as a life-growing ministry team to serve others!

Growing at Presence
In the past 10 years, Presence has hosted many events to preserve the faith of our next generation and to help build healthy families in our communities. We are truly thankful to see lives changed and relationships enriched among the people that we’ve served. May the Lord use these fruits to bless many more families!
Growing at Presence
Deeply Touched... Irene Chang
I attended the “Personal Growth Workshop,” conducted by Agnes Ip, at the Chinese Family For Christ (CFFC) co-worker’s retreat in June 2013. In addition to learning a lot, I was deeply touched by this workshop in many ways. •
I was moved and touched by the story of Agnes’ transformation following her traumatic childhood experiences through God’s saving grace and her whole-hearted dedication to serving the Lord. Her life has borne fruit not of earthly riches, but of the salvation of her loved ones, as well the healing of familial bonds. At the same time, Agnes and her husband are still able to bless the souls of many people by their healing ministries and their compassion for those in pain. Her dedication to and heart for ministry has given her deep reflections on life. When she closed the course by reading to us a scriptural passage from Ecclesiastes, we were all extremely moved.
• I was touched by Agnes’ vision and creativity, and her insights into the brokenness that ails contemporary marriages and families. It led her to design a program that involves drawing our life maps, understanding our original family and attachment patterns, and learning how to develop healthy boundaries. Our classes were dynamic, comprising group interactions and role-playing activities. Over the course of one short day, we learned to recognize the source of our own strengths and weaknesses, life attitudes and patterns, and then write our own life themes. We also learned how to modify unhealthy patterns by God’s grace. • I was touched by Agnes’ passion to preserve the faith of today’s youths, and her courage in establishing Presence and expanding her ministries to the American west coast and Hong Kong. Through creative programs that foster communication and improve parent-child relationships, she is able to integrate biblical values and her clinical experiences to provide education on healthy personal and family growth for our next generation, in order that they may shine like stars in this present dark age. My husband and I pastor a church in Boston and feel deeply that a ministry like Presence is a treasure to Chinese churches. We pray that, one day, believers from the East Coast will also benefit from Agnes’ teaching and Presence’s ministry, and bear fruit from the experience. Mrs. Irene Chang, and her husband Pastor Steve Chang, Caring Pastor at the Chinese Bible Church of Greater Boston began serving as a leading couple at CFFC for the Marriage Enrichment Retreat since March 2013. Irene enjoys studying Chinese church history and has been involved in research in this area.

Reflection from
“Journey to Intimacy” Jackie Lui I attended the “Journey to Intimacy” program organized by Presence in September 2012. It was a series on love, marriage, EQ and personal growth. In two months’ time, I had learned the skills to better relate to my husband and children, and likewise, my relationships with friends and other people had also improved. More importantly, through this program, I came to understand more about myself and the impact of my original family on how I relate to people today. That experience helped me be able to appreciate others’ strengths and kindness more. I remember during one small group sharing session, our mentor, Rebecca, was providing guidance about how to show appreciation to our spouse. In the beginning, I felt embarrassed and indifferent, thinking that this was not my usual way of communicating to my husband. Rebecca explained, “When someone feels loved, appreciated, understood and recognized, he is willing to give his very best regardless of the sacrifice.” Then I thought about my husband’s sacrifice of bringing our two children to school for orchestra practice at six o’clock in the morning every day and never complaining, only to allow me to have more sleep. I was truly touched by his love and thoughtfulness. I shared my words of appreciation to my husband after the class. He was overjoyed and we ended up embracing each other. He also showed his appreciation and thankfulness for my sacrifices to the family. I was greatly changed after attending “Journey to Intimacy.” Through the recording of Dr. Wei-ren Huang, and the life experiences of the group members, I have learned to love and to enjoy being loved more. I also discovered more about myself and have become more able to forgive. Presence provides very good training events on marriage and parenting that cater to the needs of Chinese immigrant families with overseas-born parents and locally-born children. I truly enjoy their programs and I can see myself and my family grow as I learn. * Journey to Intimacy - materials and leaders’ training provided by Focus of Family

Growing at Presence
God’s blessing from our life map
Seeing
Ada Tran
It was quite a struggle for me whether or not to attend Presence’s “Personal Growth Retreat for People in Caring Ministry”. This was a twelve-hour workshop. Twelve hours? Who can really afford twelve hours in the midst of our hectic lives with work, church ministry and family needs? Most of us grew up influenced by different people and circumstances, some positive and some negative. Facing the negative side of life, some people choose to avoid and some choose to forget. Yet those pieces of our life stories, whether good or bad, may cause us to get lost in life. Some significant figures in our lives like our parents and spouse may hurt us either intentionally or unintentionally. These hurts can deeply affect us, keeping us from stepping forward in life. In this Growth Retreat, we looked back and examined the different stages of our lives; and tried to give titles to each of the stages. From those titles, we came up with an overall theme for our lives. We learned our strengths and weaknesses, and examined our life patterns and attitudes. This was quite a difficult and energy-consuming lesson for me. In the first place, it was not easy to find words to describe my life with my limited vocabulary, not to mention the courage and grace needed from above to deal with the dark side of my soul. Through Agnes’ instruction, we listened carefully to our inner selves. While God started to work in us through this lesson, we learned to understand better how we were created and our unique purposes in life. When we shared in a small group, we courageously faced our lives and even the darker side of ourselves. We had to admit that sometimes, there’s no way we can explain our circumstances. Our pain could be due to our own fault or others’ faults; and helplessness cannot be avoided even with a change in environment. Yet when we put these pieces of our life together, whether good or bad, we begin to trace the pattern of our personal life map. Even at our highs and lows, from our life map, we started to be able to accept more about our past and be amazed by God’s transforming grace and power in our imperfect lives. Understanding our own pain and darkness also helps us better understand others’ struggles. God is able to mend broken relationships, set the captives free, and bring hope to the hopeless. God’s goodness is revealed in our brokenness, and His grace perfected in our weaknesses. We do not always understand life’s circumstances, but we know He holds our lives. He’s the one who talks to us gently, knows our pain, bears our weaknesses, and takes us from darkness into true light. Stories in the Bible represent stories of real people and imperfect lives. Even these imperfect stories were all in the hands of God. This workshop allowed me to look back into my past in order to draw a life map for myself. It also made me see how God intervenes and guides me in the different stages of my life, helping me to truly understand the Scripture passage, “in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” I also felt transformed and better equipped to serve others and care for people.

Thanksgiving From My Life Journey
Su-Ting Lin
My husband and I attended a Co-Worker’s Retreat hosted by the Chinese Family For Christ (CFFC), which was held in Ontario, California, in June, 2013. The theme of the retreat was “A Life Transformed”. Agnes Ip, the founder of Presence Quotient, was our main speaker on the first day. She showed us how to draw our life maps from the different stages of our life journey, and from the map, how to find our life theme. She taught us attachment theory and its impact on our lives, and helped us understand the importance of setting up proper boundaries in our relationships. It was striking to me that life incidents, both negative or positive, can be factors that carry on from childhood into adulthood, affecting our attitudes on how we live and our marriage life. I was also surprised to discover how my attachment to my father has such a great impact on my relationship with my husband now. How am I going to live out my life? I learned from this training that my life journey, the purpose of my life, and relationship boundaries are areas that I must work on and realize. The exercise of looking back into my past also allowed me to understand more about God’s blessings in my life, and I praise Him for that. Su-Ting Lin is a piano teacher. She and her husband attend First Chinese Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona. They also served as a leading couple at the Marriage Enrichment Retreat for CFFC.

Growing at Presence
Campus Representatives Initiative (CRI) It was truly amazing to have the opportunity to mentor Suzanne through CRI. Not only was I able to have a relationship with her, but I was also able to learn so much from her. Suzanne became the little sister I’ve never had, and I was able to share so much of my life with her. It was also rewarding to see her grow in her faith through all the struggles in life, and I’m glad that God put me in her life to help support her through some of them. ~ Virginia Ng, CRI Mentor 2012-2013
Looking back on the CRI program, there was one particular meeting that really stands out. I was planning to cancel since it was perhaps one of the hardest weeks in my life, and I could barely care for myself emotionally, let alone a mentee that depended on me. But I since I committed to this responsibility, I couldn’t abandon it, and was pleasantly surprised when we had deep chats that day and also one of the best Bible studies, trying to grasp what it means in Ezekiel to “stand in the gap.” It was an encouraging day that transformed my perspective. It helped me to see God’s glory amidst all the joys and sorrows and to put others above myself. Overall, I certainly developed more trust in God and patience during times of frustration, catching a glimpse of fatherhood. Though I felt inadequate, hesitated joining, and slacked off later, I believe God blessed the both of us through the CRI program.- Gregory Wong, CRI Mentor 2012-2013
Gregory Wong, CRI Mentor 2012-2013 I had very little expectations when I decided to register for the CRI program; I just wanted some direction in my spiritual growth. Greg was someone I looked up to, and I wanted him to be my mentor, so I requested for that to be arranged. We would go to Mcdonald’s in the mornings that we met and would tell each other about our weeks and how we are doing. Then we proceed to go through the month’s topic in the book. I learned a lot studying the Bible through the CRI program booklet. I never thought that I could talk to strangers about God, but one of the challenges from the booklet we took on was evangelizing to people. Cor. 2:1 was inspiring, when Paul says “I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.” Anyone can share their experiences with God; it doesn’t require any human wisdom or skill in speech. Though I don’t think I’m anywhere near being at a place that God wants me to be at, my experience with CRI has been a big motivating push forward. - Andrew Leung, CRI Student 2012-2013 ~ Andrew Leung • CRI Student 2012-2013
