“ I ache because my people won’t come into my presence. I want you to be an usher “ This was the beginning of Presence Worship. It was a distinct call to enter into the place of God’s throne room and to bring others in. Introduction

It’s really important to say that, whilst I’m writing this chronological history in the first person, it should be read understanding that we have not come this far without struggles, questions, even doubts about whether we’d heard God correctly. Between the lines of these pages we oer our deep gratitude to God for His faithfulness to us through friends on a journey and for His supernatural provision over all our family Let this story and Your future plans for us give you great glory Jesus!

On the day I gave my life to Jesus in August in 1978, I knew that He had given me music for His purposes somehow There and then it was in the Salvation Army playing my cornet and singing for Him. As the 80’s arrived and electronic music beckoned I persuaded my Mum and Dad to let me have an old piano and taught myself a few chords. With that I was invited into my first ever band. ‘Dove’ with some friends from other Salvation Army Corps As the years went by and seasons changed, including meeting Tracy ! We played and sang together with friends in a couple other bands. ‘Primary Objective’ and ‘Three Men In A Furnace (TMF)’ These were days of learning how to give gifts of worship to God in new ways Exploring songwriting, recording and connection with many people both in the city, across the UK and once even on a mission trip to Los Angeles. I didn’t know it then, but God had me in training and the more I allowed Him to guide, the deeper I was going into His purposes In these formative years I was very grateful to friends like Brian Lucas at Smallthorne Salvation Army who always covered me and spoke up for me when trying something new in worship. Also to the likes of Brian Barber and John Hibberts at Swan Bank who allowed grace to grow and Spiritual food to sustain All this had been part of God’s design, leading Tracy and I into where this story of Presence Worship begins.

3

With my head buzzing, I turned over and shook Tracy from her sleep telling her that I’d just had a vision. As you can imagine, she was delighted to be awoken, not, and said something like ‘that’s nice dear.. ‘

Well, so taken by what I was caught up in I headed for the spare room and remember walking around thanking God that He had chosen to meet me in this way. After some time, feeling tired I decided to lie down and as I did I had an incredible pain in my belly. Aware of God’s presence I asked Him to take the pain This is what I felt Him say to me in that moment ‘This is just something of the pain that I feel because people won’t come to me even though I’ve made a way. I want you to be an usher into My presence’

It was in the autumn of 1997 that I’d returned from a meeting and at bed time, as I drifted o, I had what I would describe as a vision. A new thing for me then but very real. In the vision I could see myself sitting at a keyboard, playing. I could hear melodies and I sensed that it was God inviting me to write something new. Slightly surprised and excited by what I saw and heard, I reached for a pen and paper from my bedside drawer and as I did, I felt I heard God say. ‘Don’t write it down. I know what you’re like. I’ll remind you in the morning’ Well, this sealed it for me. He knew I was forgetful and it made the encounter all the more real

Don’twriteitdown.

I’llremindyou

Sensing the reality of this moment, I realised that this was a calling to pursue Immediately the pain subsided and I was able to sleep peacefully The next day I began to record what became known as ‘Enter The Throne Room’ It felt like a complete download from God, received and recorded quickly, an instrumental journey from the outer courts into the Holy of Holies. This place that He’d so powerfully reminded me of and called me to draw others into Hebrews 10:19-20 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,by a new and living way opened for us throughthecurtain, thatis, hisbody

Thinking about these past 25 years in particular I wanted to at least try and record some of the events and experiences that God has been kind enough to allow Tracy and I, with our fab 4 children (Jess, Sam, Lily and Lizzie) to be a part of. We wanted to give thanks to Him for His faithfulness through it all Just an opening disclaimer I’ve probably missed some things and some names along the way but hope this gives more than a flavour of the many and varied appointments He made possible over these years. If you have a memory of a way we connected I’ll leave a way to contact me at the end.

Reminded about the whole realm of ministry I recall a very strong impression from God on this subject. In prayer one day, I sensed Him say 5

So began Presence Worship that day. Soon after, meditating on all of this I realised that it meant I needed to do something about it and though I’d been involved in small ways leading worship locally and in Christian Bands I didn’t see a way forward. So, as we do sometimes, I had a chat with God about it and I remember asking the question. ‘If you want me to do this You need to give me some opportunities!’ Pretty presumptuous really! God had a swift answer for me. ‘You give me some time and I’ll give you some opportunities’ Well, that sealed it I chatted to Tracy and she, being much more bold than me said. Finish work and go for it. Sadly, I wasn’t that bold but knew it was a serious enough call to do something about it. So, I quickly had a conversation with my managers at MORE Training, David and Philip Owens, who’d always been incredibly supportive of me I explained what I was sensing of a responsibility to explore this path with God and asked if I could work my 5 day week into 4 trying to honour what I’d sensed God was saying. All this agreed the new pattern began and within a couple of weeks the phone rang and on the other end was William Porter I’d briefly met him and Karen, his wife, at a Methodist Evangelical Conference at Swanwick where I was leading worship and He’d been brought in to cover for the speaker who’d fallen ill. William chatted to me about a plan he had with others in the Methodist Church to organsise a year of travelling to various locations across the UK to welcome and stir an awakening within the movement. He said they'd been looking for someone to lead the worship and felt drawn to me. He explained that it might not be possible as he knew I was working full time and travel would be needed on Fridays to reach the locations. What he didn’t know was that I’d just agreed to this new 4 day arrangement with MORE Training I said I’d go away, think and pray. Straight away I rang my long time friend and prayer partner asking him to pray. I think his words were something like.. ‘I don’t need to pray bro’ It’s obvious you’ve given time and here’s God’s opportunity!’ So, I called back, accepted and began the journey of meeting the team of friends that were planning ahead for the ‘Approaching Revival Tour’ in 1998. That year was a brilliant learning curve for me, visiting a dozen or so venues around the UK, meeting with local Christians and learning how to flow with the Holy Spirit in all sorts of dierent settings and styles I really feel that this was the foundation time for my ministry to Him. We had the privilege of seeing God move, encourage and stir many lives and knew that there was a wonderful invitation in worship to come and meet with the Father, just as He’d promised.

this. ‘If you gain your own ministry, it’s over. Your responsibility is to minister to me’ Whilst I of course understand the role of individuals and ‘ministries’ I am incredibly grateful for the reminder to keep my attention and my focus on Him Internationallifto

After a wonderful year of UK travel and partnership with God and our friends 1999 I ventured into my first international trip. Firstly over to Wisconsin on to a snowy Canadian border Indian reserve fellowship and then to Seattle. This was made possible by my friendship with Jim Ford at Penkhull Christian Fellowship We had worked together a number of times at the Potteries Museum during those late 90s on Saturday evenings, Jim preaching and me leading some opening worship. This first trip was to birth what have been long standing connections with our extended family in the USA and Canada. It was the first time I met Jerry and Barbara Crick in Wisconsin, Joe and Pam McIntyre from Word of His Grace church in Kirkland, Washington State. John and Holly Roddam from St Luke’s in Seattle. Tai and Joy Mostovoy from Beth David Messainic Congregation in Seattle. (Sadly for us, Joe, Tai and Jerry have now left for heaven) They all came to an IFM (International Federation of Ministers) Conference that I was leading worship at. I also met Greg Daley here from Seattle Revival Center and was asked to visit them to lead worship on Sunday. This followed an amazing and crazy night at St Luke’s ‘Circle of Worship’ with Steve Hampton. I’d been involved in some Worship training during the day at the church and this was a brilliant end to the day, including being anointed by the team with a whole jug of oil! 1999 also saw a follow up conference with William and Karen Porter ‘Church in Revival’ praying and imagining a church and communities alive in Christ. This conference was held from the 19 21st February and with the theme 'Released to Grow' in the beautiful conference Centre in North Wales called Living Waters (Sadly now closed)

These early God appointments and opportunities to grow in God and in faith were to prove of much worth as He began to give me the opportunities He’d promised. It was also a time of developing local and National relationships, discovering how and where God wanted us to share what He’d given to us. We were learning that this was how He was teaching us to operate Out of heart conenction and not promotion

In these few years that followed there was a steady stream of visits to local churches and visits back overseas, all the time remembering who God had called me to be and where He was leading me to. I remember

The year 2000 saw us enter into a growth in local training with teams including food friends at St Paul’s Edensor who were the guinea pigs for my first step into training and equipping. I continued to serve at Swan Bank and lead teams whilst taking some musicians with me on the road as we were invited to various locations. I’d often take Jess with me on a monthly trip to Helsby, Cheshire to lead worship for some ‘ open to the Spirit’ meetings with Andrew Baguley who was the minister there and also part of our Approaching Revival team. Similar regular meetings took place in Dueld where I was regularly asked by the minister Pat Olivent to lead along with musicians I’d take with me. Megan Potter, who still regularly plays violin alongside me, was one of my friends on the journey here who shared with me powerful times of encountering the Holy Spirit as we opened up ourselves to more of Him. I remember a transformation on a particular evening in Dueld that shaped a new era with Megan of spontaneous playing which she still carries so beautifully today.

even on the early trip to the USA in 1999 being oered a worship pastor job, paid, in a beautiful place. Surely this must be God’s plan! Before giving my Yes, I rang Tracy back home in the UK giving her the big sell Ever wise, she asked me a simple but striking question. What did Jesus say? Ouch.. I hadn’t thought to ask. Surely it would be right. Using my gifts for God. Perfect. I did go to prayer and I immediately got my answers from God. I felt Him say ‘You belong to Stoke’ I felt He was allowing me to travel in and out but my Spiritual home was back in my City I went back and gave my grateful apologies but very much at peace. So, this settled I knew that I was available for wherever God would lead but anchored to my home and so began the travelling in and out. Y2K- 2C7

On Pentecost Sunday, the 11th, I led a worship team for the opening part of a large united celebration at Port Vale football ground. The afternoon was full of fun for the family too and the concluding worship time was led by Chris Bowater It was the first time in our history that we’d taken our worship and prayer to the City stadiums and was to be, I believe, something of a precursor to what was to come

This year continued a run of worship leading for Rob Frost’s ‘Easter People Conference’ this time we were based at the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth. It was an amazing week with my team from Stoke in the venue with Jackie Pulinger, powerful evangelist and author of ‘ Chasing the Dragon’. We had some amazing and challenging times teaching, learning and growing together

I gathered a small team and night number one of what was to become the 2C7 prayer movement began (2 Chronicles 7:14) 200 Christians gathered and after a quick chat on stage we agreed to meet again the following month and thereafter for 7 years! Amazing times of corporate worship and prayer with invitations to local organisation heads, such as the Police force and fire service too My friend Robert Mountford has written extensively about the growth of this movement in His book ‘Heal the land’ Whilst presence was involved in many other areas of ministry to God. 2C7 was a core expression of something really important that God was doing in us and in the city.

In all of the many and varied opportunities God had faithfully given, the importance of our entrance into God’s presence during our worship was gathering pace Songs I was writing and any teaching I was sharing was often focussed on this truth. He was taking me deeper and encouraging me to carry others along. Then, in 2001 on one of my visits to the pool at our local leisure centre I wondered what it would be like to gather anyone who wanted to worship, without any other agenda, in the sports hall there Felt like a bit of a crazy idea I passed it by some close friends, prayed and felt I should just pay for the hall, advertise it and see what happened. This evening turned out to be deeply significant. Virtually all the seats were filled and we put together a full band including our friends, Andrew and Cathy McKeon who’d been part of our bands through the 80s and 90s We had dancers, banners and a group of wonderful prayer supporters and venue stewards. We became a great company gathered together purely with the intention of bringing an oering of praise to God. I remember thinking that this was not an event, it was an encounter. Looking back now, what followed seemed really intersting in God’s timing. At the beginning of 2001 Lloyd Cooke, my good friend and companion of many years, asked me to block the 31st October in my diary. All very secretive, felt he couldn’t share why but nevertheless , I saved the date. As the months went by we chatted and Lloyd finally confirmed that He’d felt we should hold a united prayer gathering on that date. This was not just an anti halloween gathering but a response to a poll that had placed Stoke on Trent at the bottom of league tables of the best and worst places to live. I remember clearly that Lloyds response to the poll was to take a look at our Christian responsibility for the city Rather than blaming any governing bodies, he used the phrase ‘ It’s not the quality and quantity of the darkness but the quality and quantity of the light that is important’.

Soon after the international guests had returned home I recieved a telephone call from one of the ministers who had been staying in our home, the Reverend Sng Chong Hui. He felt he should contact me asking if I could go out to his church in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore to train and equip the Youth Worship Team. I was taken back and said I’d pray about it, and get back to him. A few minutes later. He called again. ‘By the way’ he said ‘It’s a Macedonian call !. We would like you all to come out as a family and we will cover all expenses’ This was unusual but really welcome as it meant that we could share together in a dierent context and have our children with us We spent more time chatting over the weeks and arrangements were made for us to visit in December of 2002. By this time we had 3 children, Jess, Sam and Lily (she was to take her first ministry trip at the ripe old age of 6 months.)

What an amazing trip and a time to work out how to best equip teams We spent week number one of three meeting with the young people and leaders. I led worship in all the various services oered at Ang Mo Kio and began to get a sense of how best to move forward. Weeks 2 and 3 consisted of practical training with the band, some spiritual input, songwriting classes and even working with the church choir It was Sng Chong Hui’s desire to bring together what intil then had been age related gatherings. Childrens’s church. Youth church and Adult Church. Our goal was to have the team ready to lead worship in the adult service for the very forst time on the final week of our trip.

Around this same time period in 2001, following on from our work together in ‘Approching Revival’ and ‘Church in Revival’, The Porters and team along with ourselves began a new Methodist network under the name of ‘Ignite’. We were looking to gather likeminded Christians and church leaders together for worship, prayer and encouragement.

During one of our Ignite conference times at Cli College in Derbyshire we met Isaac Limm who was then the president of the Methodist Church in Singapore and a group of his fellow ministers. This was a great connection that was to grow over the coming years.

Over these first few years I travelled more and Tracy was the one who kept everything going, sacrificied herself giving full time child care and looking after things at home. Whilst I was the face and sound of what God had called us into, it would have been impossible without her support and blessing She was the one who on day one was convinced we should devote ourselves to this calling. It was during a day of prayer in Nottingham where I was leading, the oering was being taken and Tracy remembers saying to God. I don’t have money to put into a plate but I’m giving Paul to You The reality was that in the practicalities of our lives, finances could be challenging but God had other ways for us to give to Him..

Input complete, prayers oered and gifts released, we had the joy of seeing that team fly. Confidently taking their place and drawing others into worship It was a very special moment In all these years that have followed I’ve been able to stay in touch with a number of that youth team and seen them grow and serve. What a blessing!

As things were growing, we were balancing part time work and travel. God seemed to be nudging us deeper into His plan On two occasions in two dierent nations I had these prophetic pictures given to me. They went something like this ‘ I see you like a child on a swing and the ropes are being cut but you continue to swing’ . The second was almost identical ‘I see you on a hammock , rocking from side to side, the supports are being cut, but you won’t fall You’ll keep swinging’ We logged these words, held onto them and then, on a visit to lead worship in Birmingham, we found ourselves praying with a team in the church oce and there on the wall was a picture of a child on a swing! Well, it got to December 2003 and we were leading worship at a Methodist Evangenlical conference, in Swanwick, Derbyshire. MET (Previously Headway) became a regular appointment for us over the years, leading the sung worship and sometimes helping with teaching and conference input. During some free time this particular year, we headed to Denby Coee Shop and chatted. I think we pretty much simultaneously said something like. ‘It’s time to cut the cord’ It was time. Maybe I’d been putting it o. Maybe I just needed to allow God to build my foundation? Whatever it was, I knew I had to go back home and finally hand in my notice 10

It’stimetocutthecord

As soon as we returned I went to chat to David and Philip at MORE Training and told them it was time for me to leave. I was really aware of the fact there was never going to be an easy time for them to let me go but I remember well having the conversation about how God had led and provided so far for us and how they’d seen this reality. So, I vividly remember driving from the oce down to the Sentinel Newspaper Oces where I was delivering Customer Service qualifications and saying to God This is really exciting but really scary! This was big for me, even as we began walking out of His vision in 1997. What about family? What about my Fatherly responsibilities? I had much to learn about being Fathered by the biggest and best. Tracy reminds me that I waited until we were going to have our fourth child, Lizzie, to make the move! Sitwithme Decision made, I felt God challenge me again. This time to devote the coming January of 2004 to Him To give Him a month of my attention To not take on work but sit, worship and listen. The truth is that I wondered where His wisdom was in this!! We were not in a good financial position. We were in the negative and surely if I didn’t take on work it would be tough. Miraculously by the end of December, I’m sure through the generosity of friends on a journey, but definitely by the grace of God we were one month in advance in our Bank account. Jesus had us covered and there was no excuse but to give Him the time He was calling me into. I was slowly learning, and still am, that He’s got this stu. I felt like a serious call so I took over a simple space we’d made in our loft with some boards and a ladder, heading up there each morning in January to dedicate time to Him. I put up a washing line and when I felt He’d spoken something important to me or reminded me of His promises, I wrote them down and pinned them to the line as a reminder to me and a visual response I remember distinctly the importance of this time. The impact of Him saying that ‘You need to fully let go of the old so that you can fully lay hold of the new.’ He really was going to allow me to be a part of some amazing and beautiful things and open up His plans for Tracy and I as we set in our hearts to give to Him whatever we had Psalm46:10Hesays, ‘Bestill, andknowthatIamGod;Iwillbeexaltedamongthe nations. Iwillbeexaltedintheearth.

That year saw a busy travel time. I was invited through the reconnection with our friends Alex and Ian Wolvers to visit Sri Lanka where they had found themselves following a time of mission in China

Learning from 11th to 26th September from the 3 weeks in Singapore in 2002, I spent week one getting alongside those who’d signed up to be involved and some who may have been a little resistant It felt important to share friendship and build understanding. I also sat in a very formal meeting of church elders who questioned me about the how and why bringing something new in the Church would be helpful and particulalry to explain the context of ‘Contemporary Worship’. This was new for many. Understandably, I was unknown to them and they wanted to check me out before I was let loose. It was an intense meeting but helped set things in place for what followed. I developed and demonstrated some skills in week two and in week three began to release and involve those who formed part of a new team The model that God had given me in Singapore during my first three week trip was proving really helpful and eective. This was one of the most stretching times of the new season. Again God was teaching me and enabling me. During the time on the Island as well as work with the church I found myself in the English Governor's home sharing over dinner, delivering morning devotions with those on their way to daily work and to church leaders in the amazing old colonial bulding of the YMCA in central Columbo. As I look back again, it seemed that God had been giving me a priviledge to become a catalyst for something new in the nations Pretty mind blowing for a boy from Stoke In every year we were learning to depend on God and were seeing God provide for our practical needs in all sorts of ways. Still, at times, for me personally there have been wobbles. Times when I wondered if I’d heard right, when the world’s realities in front of us seemed challenging There’s not room here to share every time we saw Him move, but this was probably one of the most memorable.

I’d arranged to meet with Robert Mountford for a catch up and was sharing with him a particularly challenging financial time we were in We sat in the lower coee bar at The Grand Hotel in Hanley and across the table were chatting. Into the room came a lady. She walked to the bar but 12

Changes on the island meant that more Western families were settling on the island and the Church where the Wolvers had found themselves was looking to develop a contemporary worship service. I was invited by the minister to share, train and equip the beginnings of a brand new work at St Andrew’s, Columbo.

without buying anything came back and sat on the sofa next to me. The first thing she asked was, ‘Are you a Christian?. A bit stunned at the greeting I said, ‘Yes I am’ ‘Do you need some money?’ she asked Even more shocked but out of honesty, I said ‘Well, yes, I do’. ‘What’s your name she said?’ I gave her my name and she reached into her bag, pulled out a cheque book, wrote on it, folded it up, gave it to me and got up and left the hotel. I think Robert’s jaw was on the ground and we were both quiet for a minute. I opened up the cheque and it was for £100. It wasn’t all we needed but in that moment I heard God say. ‘If I can send someone here to do this, are you going to trust me?’ It really was a miraculous moment and a vivid reminder of this Father who knew just what we needed 2004 also saw me back in Singapore this time as part of the Methodist International Prayer Conference from the 16th to 19th June. Visiting along with William Porter, Lloyd Cooke and other UK prayer representatives I was priviledged to be a part of afternoon seminars, back up singing in some of the evenings with an International band and leading worship on a Saturday Evening, which so happened to be based on 2 Chronicles 7:14 ‘If my people’. The exact same cry that was rising in our 2C7 meetings in Stoke. Above all the worship and input that week, the most humbling evening was when we from the UK were asked to pray for delegates who wanted to give themselves to God again. Many came for prayer and at the end of one particular evening, I remember feeling how damp my shirt was and thinking it was the heat. Then I realised it was the tears of those who had come and found a deep place with God. What a privilege to be in the middle of days like this

Belongingrevealed In these years that have followed God began to reveal more of His purpose in my ‘belonging to Stoke’. The 2C7 meetings had continued to grow and develop from their beginnings in 2001 and leaders' gatherings were running alongside these. All of which I was a part of leading and sometimes shaping. As well as our regular gatherings at what was then The Bethel Church in Abbey Hulton, we took the meetings out to local churches between 2003 and 2005. Modelling ways to worship and pray for our City God was continuing to teach us the power and value of combined Worship and Prayer. Leaders and Intercessors were taking time out each year to be together for 24 hours at Shallowford House in Staordshire. Seeking God, growing our relationships and asking Him for wisdom as we continued to welcome his Kingdom into our city. Part of God’s directing us was a real sense of how we were to take our prayers and our worship into a place of mission. Following a visit to the South of 13

England. My friend Lloyd had met up with New Zealander Craig Marsh who had shared his amazing healing testimony . Lloyd shared this with the 2C7 team and we felt we should invite Craig to Stoke and open up some public meetings. Opportunities for healing and connection with God. The details of the mission are really well documented by Robert Mountford again in His book ‘Heal the land’ but I’ll just give a short taste here of what was a glorious and blessed time.

14

On the 25th September 2005 with a Marquee hired and teams in place we opened up ‘A time for healing’ in Trentham Gardens. It was the first of 12 planned weeks and many came and filled that place Christians and those who were seeking, those who had healing needs all came Because of our wonderful friends Rob and Lorainne Tunicli’s amazing oer to take care of our Children on every evening we were to be away (this included weekends when we’d been leading conferences together!) Tracy and I were able to be fully involved in these nights, arriving around 6 to set up and sound check a band made up of musicians from churches around the City, we’d begin to worship as soon as we were ready, welcoming God’s presence, preparing a way for Him. After opening times of praise together, Criag Marsh would share His healing testimony, bring a short time of challenge then open up the front of the meeting tent for anyone to come who wanted prayer After night one when we played some recorded music whilst prayer continued, I remember being prompted by God to see if it was OK with our team to continue to worship until the last person in the tent had received prayer. All agreed, for the following 11 eleven nights we flowed together in prayer and worship, Welcoming God to heal and meet with all who came It was a beautiful and powerful time continuing until the midnight hour. This was such an amazing time for us all in the City. God was doing a beautiful thing and we were privileged to be a part of it. As this mission period paused we prepared to help host and lead a '’Touching The Father's Heart Conference at Swan Bank Mission, from the 24th 26th October 2005, iinviting guests and our Ignite Revival Network team for 3 days of teaching and worship. Included in this conference were John and Carol Arnott who had been such a blessing through the Toronto Airport Vineyard Church (The focal point of the '’Toronto Blessing") These 3 days were filled with great teaching and times to abandon ourselves in worship, sometime'’ literally as the weight of His presence caused us to linger. There were deep Holy Spirit encounters and I remember well how wonderfully John and Carol took care to make sure that there was an explanation about what may have been happening as people in the room were impacted by the power of God. So

important and a real lesson in how to minister well together in '’Spirit and Truth' It was at this Father’s heart conference too that I was able to partner with our friend Scott McDermott from Washington Crossing United Methodist Church near to Philadelpia. We were to share on a number of occasions over these few years, firstly on a trip with Andrew Bauguley and Paul Wilson in 2005 and again on a visit where Scott hosted the International prayer conference in his church in 2009. On each occasion I was blessed to lead teams and join together welcoming more God’s presence and Kingdom.

Swiftly on the heels of the final healing meeting at Bethel church came the UK’s turn to host the International Prayer Conference. Our team from Ignite Revival organised the gathering at the Potteries Museum and art gallery. We had particularly wanted to encourage ministers from some of the Eastern European Churches and India to come and had managed to raise some sponsorship. This was a blessed time of worship and prayer with the title '’Glory in the Nations'. There was such a strong sense of unity. A welcoming of His kingdom plans and deep sense of the Holy Spirit at work. There was more fruit still to come following this time of blessing together in our City, but more about that later 15

Paul and Andrew had been an important part of our ‘Approaching/Church Revival’ years and later again in Headway/MET Conferences where we shared and minstered together In March 2006 we were involved for another season of Á time for healing. This time after 6 nights back in the marquee in Trentham we took the meetings to Kidsgrove Town Hall and to The Queen’s theatre in Burlsem. We had Craig with us again during this time and I, Tracy and the team were blessed to open the door to what the Holy Spirit was doing. More significant nights of encounter for many in our City. After 4 weeks ‘ on the road’ we relocated these meetings to our 2C7 home venue of The Bethel Church Craig joined us for some of this time but many evenings we worked together as a local team and gave ourselves to welcoming what God was doing with us in our City.

On Sunday May 21st 2006 (Just happened to be my birthday!) We held our final Time For Healing Meeting This had been a 45 day adventure with Jesus. Seeing amazing realities of His presence and welcoming the light of His Glory into our City. Without doubt, this was one of the reasons out of His kindness that God had reminded me through Tracy’s wisdom to wait and ask ‘ I belonged to Stoke’

In the Easter of 2007 we had the opportunity to travel once again as a family, but this time we felt that we should take a team. Our destination this time was the USA and Canada. We had been invited by a connection from my previous trip to Seattle, Loyal Ritter, to lead worship for a conference in Leavenworth, Washington State with the writer of the book ‘God’s Generals’ Roberts Liardon We took Phil and Max Nakivell plus Ste along, all who’d been involved in leading and recording with us over previous years. After a week’s conference we headed through Seattle into Cloverdale to meet up and share with our Candadian friends. These 2 weeks were a wonderful mix of learning how to operate in grace together and carrying a unity of heart from our City of Stoke on Trent into the nations. It has been a continual source of amazement to me that God would take us ‘hidden Stokies’ and make a way for us to be a blessing to others. Throughout these years of travelling and learning with God, we’d continued to serve at our local church, Swan Bank Mission and had been very grateful for friends in our home group who’d prayed us through the road we were travelling. This had been our Spiritual home right through youth group days (where we met as teenagers) and the place where I had begun to spread my wings into the call of worship. Leading and training a number of bands and musicians. It had been a very important foundational place for us both, a place where we’d developed lifelong friendships with the likes of John and Dil Naylor, Katie and Kev Britton, who we still serve alongside today.. However, Tracy and I had felt there was still something more, something new for us to be a part of. Not being sure what it was, we remembered the lesson of letting go of the old to embrace the new We spent time chatting with our leaders John and Val Hibberts and though some of it felt hard and there were some tears about the decision, we moved on from Swan Bank and took a seat on the back row of New Life Church in Congleton. Being just over the border from our home town, this was a place where less people knew us and we were able to sit and receive for a season We were so grateful to Pastor Steve Hodgkinson who welcomed us in with no pressure to do anything. So that’s what we did, worshipped, recieved and sat with others, pausing and waiting for God’s direction. This pausing and waiting was to be another important part of our story not just for us but for friends on the journey. I mentioned earlier that the healing mission had come to an end that May. We had been chatting to the Porters and we’d all felt that we should oer a space for a season where other Christians in the City could gather to sit in God’s presence

In the midst of this time we were really just trying to move with what we felt God called us to do and not try to rush into anything It was during this new phase of our lives, watching and waiting for direction that we had a visitor at our regular city leaders gathering at The Bethel Church. Martin Scott, a UK prophet was with us on one of our regular Monthly leader’s gatherings It was on that morning that he spoke a word over William and Karen, declaring a raising up of Houses of Prayer. It was a powerful time and one which sparked conversation with The Porters and 17

for a while. A place just to be, just to sit with Jesus reflecting and worshipping. It felt like a place where we could allow God to settle something in our hearts of all He’d done in the previous season and listen for what He might want to say into the next. We approached UCB in Burslem and asked if there might be a room we could use once a week for a while, sharing our heart and purpose. They kindly agreed and Dave Isherwood (who is now doing amazing mission work with His wife Jan, in South Africa) opened up for us each week and spent time with us. We and a small number of guests were able to come and have some time together. ‘It’s fair to say that these nights were definitiey more about ‘being’ than ‘doing’ . We were all learning more about the beautiful place of drawing near to and ministering to God, just because He’s worth it! So much seemed to be happening this year! It was during our time of helping to host the UK's International Prayer Conference that we met, for the first time, a Slovakian lady minister by the name of 'Kornelia Francisity.' She was so blessed by what God was doing in our gatherings and so hungry for her nation to encounter more that, following the conclusion of the conference, she asked if we'd consider facilitating a European gathering the following year. After more conversations, prayer William Porter headed East in the November of 2006 to meet Kornelia, her husband Michael and there daughters (amazing translators!) looking at where and how we could host a gathering together. After successfully finding a beautiful old concert hall and some local accommodation we went on to organise and hold ‘Look to the heavens' European Prayer Conference in Piestany, Bratislava in November of 2007 We ran worship in Slovak and English simultaneously on 2 screens, with the help of Kev Britton. We had visitors from a number of European nations including Russia, Hungary, Poland and the UK. We had our Ignite friends from the USA there and some ministers again from Singapore. Once more we were all able to share in teaching, prayer and ministry (We particularly remember our Singapore friends being extremly excited one morning as it snowed heavily and some had never seen real snow before!!)

As we began 2009 I still had a heart to see extended times of worship and as part of our City leaders’ journey organised a second ‘Embrace’ Continuous worship gathering. Another 12 hours to give oursleves over as an oering to God in the city. This time the team from the Beacon organised prayer stations and I gathered teams and tech for a beautiful time at St Mark’s Church in Shelton. This year became busy with the development of local things, particularly in the House of Prayer but also some other amazing opportunities 18

ourselves about what it meant and what we should do about it! Karen writes about this in detail in her book ‘Igniting a flame of prayer’ Suce to say, right here, that it moved us to gather a dozen or so who were in a similar place of searching into William and Karen’s lounge each week. We were praying and seeking God about just what He was inviting us all into. Eventually in that year of 2007 began the work of The Beacon House of Prayer. Its story has been an incredible and ongoing time of grace and challenge, growing a community that welcomes His presence and glory Out of all Tracy and I had learned about our place in the city and the growing understanding of the power of combined Prayer and Worship, it was the start of a new chapter, a new adventure. As we all began to learn and build, Presence was still serving local churches, doing some training and equipping more locally as well as contributing to the ongoing gathering of what was the 2C7 City leaders gatherings. It was in this year of 2007 that I had a strong sense that it was time to bring a significant oering of worship at a City level and having prayed it through with Robert Mountford, Lloyd Cooke and other trusted friends, I set about organising 12 hours of unbroken worship which was to be called ‘embrace’ on the 20th October. We had leaders from around the City, 8 worship teams and prayer stations set all around the building. Space to pour out our love and devotion on Him.

The year 2007 was also the first of 2 years for me being involved in Connecting the Connectors Gathering together leaders for a couple of days at Swanwick conference. Times to worship, pray and share with thoise like us in Stoke who were engaging in deeper ways both spiritually and practically, believing that as we did, we’d welcome more of His kingdom in. This was another of many opportunities where Lloyd, Robert and myself were sharing leadership together 3 Stokies who God was using to serve His body.

Psalm100:2WorshiptheLordwithgladness;comebeforehimwithjoyfulsongs

I visited Washington Crossing again to serve at Scott McDermotts church and had the joy of staying with Tom and Linda Flakoll. This visit gave me the opportunity to lead and serve with the local team and have some good times of building and fellowship. It was during one of my chats with Tom, sharing with him about what God was doing in our home town that he, having not travelled for years, got his passport back out and committed to join us in Stoke for a conference later in the year.

Through city and local connections 2009 also saw something unexpected. An opportunity to lead worship at Windsor Castle. A friend and evangelist Jonathan Oleyede had on His heart to meet to bless the monarchy and to gather intercessors from across the UK to pray and worship. Having gained permission we had 2 days of prayer and worship in a chapel in the Castle grounds staying in accommodation inside the castle walls. We were able to pray in St George’s Chapel welcoming what God wanted to do in our nation and giving thanks for our Queen who was so faithfully living out and declaring her love for God during her reign. It’s moments like this when you have to just pinch yourself God was taking what Tracy and I had oered and opening up the completely unexpected so that what we had could be used in evey imaginable and unimaginable way!

In June of this same year I headed out to the International House of Prayer in Kansas City to take part in the ‘Forerunner Music Academy’ for a week. Taking in some teaching and going behind the scenes with some of IHOPs worship teams. Our friends Pam and Lorie Stead had kindly organised all this and given me accomodation. We first met Pam when we had just begun meeting on Sundays to worship as ‘The Beacon House of Prayer’ at Packmoor Community Centre She’d been over from the States visiting her mum who lived in Staordshire and had found out where we were. She was to become a great encouragement and cheer leader to us all. On this trip she and Laurie were amazing hosts As well as great times in the House of Prayer we had some fun down time together. One highlight for me was visiting her good friend Melody Green for an evening and having an opportunity to sit and play at Keith Green’s piano. He had been such a gift to the Kingdom with songs like ‘There is a Redeemer’ After a week learning new skills and gaining new insights my good friend Lloyd joined me from Stoke and we were able to spend some wonderful times just ‘being’ in the prayer room at IHOP and taking some opportunities to share with others our 2C7 Journey. Towards the end of our time, Pam arranged for us to meet with some European friends and I was privileged to lead a time of worship together 19

Later in this same year we took an opportunity to travel again as a family back to some folks who were to become long standing friends and extended family. We had a brief overnight stay with Holly and John Roddam who we’d served with at St Luke’s Seattle, before a short stop to see Joe and Pam McIntyre in Kirkland. This was where one of the words about ‘cutting the cord’ had been received. From here we went over for an overnight stay with Barb and Je Boetcher They had kindly organised a gathering of other US friends including Jerry and Barb Crick who I’d first worked with in Wisconsin and reconnected with a number of times both in the USA and UK. Heading further North to Linden near the Canadian border, we had a quick visit with Tai and Joy Mosotvoy, such a 20

As summer came we were able to combine a trip to see our good friend Lee Mountord, living and working in Tenerfife with an opportunity to work with and share some training time with the worship team at Silencio Christian Fellowship on the island. A good time to share in fellowship, with families and pass on some practical help for development of technical and spiritual growth. Ignite Revival Network was continuing to make opportunities for gathering those both inside and outside the Methodist Church to be encouraged and refreshed. In that November we held a conference called ‘Sounds of Heaven’ at the Hope Centre in Hanley. We had 3 days of great teaching from our team and invited guests, including Bob Dunnett and Pam Stead It was wonderful to welcome Tom Flakoll too from Washington Crossing UMC. We had some deep times with God as we dedicated time to be with Him once again. The Holy Spirit moved powerfully and at times wrecked the team,in a good way! I seem to remember one evening there was only Jess, my eldest still standing and playing her flute as many of us were overwhelmed by the weight of His glory and presence in the room

Friendsreunited Into a new year, 2010, and amongst the regular rhythms of the house came a new city wide opportunity. This was the very first of our Civic Prayer Breakfasts. Hosted by Robert and Lloyd. An invitation was given to organisation leaders, councillors, MPs, mayors and local Christians to gather, eat, share and pray for the welfare of the city. It has been a privilege to lead sung worship at each of the mornings (10 to date) including one civic lunch with our guest, the then archbishop Rowan Williams. This has been part of an ongoing heart and commitment to connect the many streams in our city together It’s been a hallmark of how God wants to take the service of our lives to Him and use it for His glory and the benefit of the place we live and love.

Worship, prayer, friendship, food and laughter. So good. God really knew how to bless us when we remember times like these Randy, Chris and their family remain a precious part of our extended family too, even though we’ve not seem them face to face since this trip

great couple. We were sad to say goodbye to Tai when he passed away but still encouraged by occasional visits and video calls with Joy. Eventually arriving in Cloverdale we were reunited with Randy and Chris Emerson. They had invited us to lead worship at their Church Camp for a week before we headed up for a trip to Whistler. What an amazing week that was. Mountains, a lake, cabins (we were in the hospital cabin!)

Following visits to the house of prayer from some friends in Cyprus, I was invited with Tracy to visit Paphos in 2011. On this trip we were travelling to bring some training to an existing team on the Island and to share some encouragement in a local home group, concluding our time by leading worship at our guests church. During this year God was stirring us at the Beacon with the possibility of organsing and hosting a year of unbroken prayer. We, with the team, made preparations and shared with local churches the vision and got ready to give ourselves in a new and intensified way. 2012 came and we’d developed a rota which meant that every hour of that year was to be filled with prayer from the Beacon. In the middle of our praying we continued to oer our worship to God, remembering that this too was our Intercession to Him and our praise for him. It was a significant year, celebrating and hosting the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic games, covering it all and welcoming God’s kingdom to come As we were going deeper, God was visiting us in new ways and speaking to us about the future.

In these following years we became much more ‘Stoke based’ dedicating ourselves with our friends at the Beacon to worship, pray and welcome His glory in. From our early days with a predominantly City focus, we found ourselves increasingly praying wider into our Nation and nations beyond. We were travelling to these places in the Spirit as we lifted up Jesus from the prayer room in the house. This was part of God’s direction for us in this particular season. To dig, serve, help and facilitate. There would be occasional travel out wider but He was doing something new with us at a local level.

Sensing an importance of passing on some of what I’d learned but not feeling the best gifted teacher, I prayed about a way to connect 21

musicians and singers in the city. A place to both grow in skill but also in friendship. After a little time I settled on the idea of ‘Presence Worship Interchange’ A place where an invited group of 8-12 could meet regularly around coee and cake, share some really practical and spiritual aspects of being on teams and leading worship. I had around 3 groups, one being a youth group (aged between 15 and 18) Some precious times of sharing and worship together.. Every group overan by 3 or 4 weeks. We all felt the benefit as these took place over 2012 and into 2013 AFatherandaPastor?

As we returned to a lighter pattern in 2013, I’d felt that having given ourselves in a concentrated way to prayer in the year behind us, maybe He was calling us to deeper times of worship in the year in front of us We began what we started to call our worship oerings, a time dedicated purely to worship before we entered into any corporate praying. We began bringing together dierent musicians and teams from around the City, 4 times a year to have continuous times of worship often for 24 hours non stop My good friend Katie Britton and I became hosts for these extended times, oering our own worship gifts but also praying for each musician or singer that came, blessing them and asking God to release His presence in the room as we ministered to Him.

On one of these occasions a friend in the house stopped me and asked why I’d decided to stay through the whole of these continuous worship times. I explained the deep connection I’d felt and the desire to support and encourage. He spoke 2 things over me. He said I was a Father and a Pastor. Both these things deeply resonated with me. Being a Father here in the natural world has been such a blessing especially after we’d thought for 7 years that we weren’t able to have children (then came 4, not all at the same time thankfully, plus one ‘Percy’ who entered heaven before we met). It seemed to me that any training and equipping with our house of prayer team was more about growing a family and this really encouraged me to see them all in that way. The title of Pastor was something that suddenly made sense too. In 2001 we’d been invited to lead worship in Plympton as guests from Cali in Columbia were speaking. They were part of a Pastor’s network that had been featured in George Otis’ Transformations videos, a place of Revivial and community breakthrough. It was as we met on the afternoon before the first evening that one of the Pastors, even before we’d introduced ourselves declared that ‘I was going to be a Pastor’. He also prophisied over Tracy and I that we would be significant in a coming UK Revival Wow! I seem to remember at the time Tracy had joked, saying something like ‘I’m not going to be a vicar’s wife‘

Over these next few years we settled into a prolonged season in the City with just occasional visits out for Paul with House of Prayer Connections, including two trips to Augsburg House of Prayer in Germany during 2014 and 2016 where friends gathered from across Europe to worship together and seek God for a kingdom move across the nations. These were wonderful times of unity and forged some new worship friendships that became a real encouragement Germany was to become significant in a later part of the story as you read on. We had also begun to host UK Houses of Prayer at The Beacon for 3 day gatherings to encourage and build one another up. It has been a blessing to do this as a couple. Me 23

Jeremiah 3:15 Then I willgive you shepherds after my own heart, who willlead youwithknowledgeandunderstanding.

But it turns out, She didn’t have to be. Here we were, over a decade later and God had made sense of his word. I just needed to receive it and walk in it

Speaking of Transformations In the June time, following all that we had journeyed with the 2C7 years, I was invited to lead worship for a conference that had been organised by our city leaders with Ed Silvoso. Ed had been a pioneer of prayer for transformation in many cities around the globe. We welcomed him into our city for 3 evenings of sharing and prayer, along with other key speakers who were involved in practical ministry in cities. We had prayer groups and intercessors that met for the weeks preceding making way for God and asking Him to clean us up and get us ready. These days reinforced in us the message about our responsibility to serve Him and others well in our City, being reflectors of the One who was only able to bring about true Kingdom change for good in every sector of our communities.

Since that time in dierent seasons, I have tried to give myself away. To be alongside and mentor others in any way I can. Sometimes it;s been simply by sharing coee, conversation and prayer. Sometimes by taking a walk and listening In one particular case I remember taking a year to walk with a worship team from Stone as they were growing and developing together. Even now I have new people in my life who I’m trying to be around for, to be a sounding board for and a friend on their journey. I remember how grateful I’d been for people like this who had been there for me over the years I am particularly grateful to Robert Mountford who was my listening ear in the early days of presence. Faithful to meet me, listen and pray. And again in the pre Presence days, Brian Lucas from Smallthorne Salvation Army was the one moddelled in my life how to be a supporter, encourager and sounding board.

helping to organise and lead worship. Tracy taking on some mammoth catering with her faithful team.

Aware of my call still in a place of lockdown, I, along with many others, began to release our worship online. Facebook, YouTube and Zoom became our new ways of pouring out praise into the earth, staying connected and building something new. I’d be leading some days for the house of prayer, some days for the World Prayer Centre plus some other local groups. We also helped to organise and broadcast 24 hours of worship online with musicians from around the city. Closed doors didn’t hinder God, In fact He was teaching us in the process There were to be two new connections for me over the lockdown days. One was the ‘Hallowed Be Your Name’ group which particularly connects believers in the UK, USA and Canada for nights every month of 24

Relationships have continued to be a major part of all Presence has done and is still doing. It was during one of the house of prayer conferences in Stoke that I first met Jonathan Anderson and his friend Johnny Tuck. These two young guys were passionate for the Kingdom and lovers of God Through calls and growing connections, Jonathan invited me to The Gather Festival in the North East of England in the summer of 2017 and 2018. These times felt like another opportunity to stand with others and to serve out of a heart to welcome God’s presence into the land. I think as well as lead worship, I did everything from stewarding to word projection, backing keys, befriending I also had the opportunity to take with me my eldest daughter Jess, with her husband Tom and our good friends Katie and Kev Britton. In the years that followed I was able to keep travelling back up to the North East with others from my team at The Beacon, including one of my other daughters, Lily. We helped to lead at ‘Gather nights’ in local churches and later for other friends in the area along the way. God still had a way of opening up new doors COVID Reshaping During 2018 and 2019 at The Beacon we were prayerfully considering a reshaping and fashioning for His purposes in the City and beyond. A challenging aspect of this was to be the closing down of our Sunday celebrations in order to clarify our position as a prayer and worship hub and community rather than regular, traditional church community A couple of weeks after our announcement COVID caused pretty much everything in the nation to be closed down, Whilst it was a shock and a challenge. The timing was very interesting. Suddenly no churches were meeting on a Sunday!

prayer and worship, inviting God’s Kingdom in more tangible ways into the nations. Another international group I was invited to join and serve on was The UK/DE Prayer Bridge group Our friend Jane Holloway from the World Prayer Centre had invited me on and together we have met many times praying and worshipping particularly over the European nations. One of our most significant calls was the release of 25 hours of worship over these nations, concluding at the moment of ‘Brexit’ We sensed and contine to pray not for a dividing of the UK from Europe but stronger connections for God’s glory. In between lockdowns I continued to serve with Tracy at the Beacon for as many ‘in person gatherings’ as we could. In between times I’d often lead worship for some of our regular online city prayer times organsied by Robert and Lloyd. Part of this season was also the collaboration on a major project by Je Lowe who has been recording every Psalm faithfully whilst friend and journalist Tony Cummings has been writing an accompanying book. Present, pastandfuture So here we are, in 2022 and COVID is still having an impact on lives but the world has begun to open up again. Travelling to lead remains quiet, some online worship is still regularly happening. House of Prayer life is reforming and reshaping. City leadership gatherings are happening, one to one mentoring is under way and our ears are open to the life of ministry to Jesus in a new season.

Most recently this year on a trip to Luton to oer help with a time of continuous worship and prayer, I felt God say this. ‘You are to be a knot in the net’ It feels like He is asking me to take what I have, who I am and what I’ve learned to help tie together what is happening for His glory. Strengthening and maybe even restoring some things. So. I’m looking for those places, not to force a way in but to be a fellow worker for the Kingdom. Even as I write today I’m joining the Burn 24/7 friends raising up worship and prayer in Birmingham as the city hosts the Commonwealth games. Through it all God has been faithful to us in the good and the scary times. Our children, Jess, Sam, Lily and Lizzie have grown up in the middle of it all and each has stories to tell of what God has done We also know that they have often paid a price for choices we have made on their behalf. We are so grateful to God for them. He has provided in so many, often miraculous ways even when I may have wondered what was to happen next. It’s with all this in mind and still questions about Presence future we want to stay thankful for all that’s past but awake to whatever He has in store next. 25

Throughout these years there have been so many varied opportunities. For many years I led Primary School assemblies, organised children’s praise parties, jumped and sang my way around school halls and venues introducing worship to a younger generation. It was just a few years ago that I decided to hang up my bouncing shoes and focus on helping a worship team at my local High School, St Peter’s Academy , where all my children had been pupils We’ve visited many local churches and helped to lead as well as train some local teams. Even now God seems to be giving us a glimpse of new opportunities to mentor and pastor. We continue to prayerfully oer up the possibilities and try to remain open handed. We’ve released new songs as an expression of our personal walk and of the times we’ve been living in. They have spanned the years. Some self published, some with Kevin Mayhew and Kingsway, but all meant for the resource of God’s people and to honour him. At the end of this booklet I’ve simply produced a list of all the songs and a discography of recordings over the years. We are sure that God’s not done with us yet and in the waiting on Him are endeavouring to remain faithful stewards of all He’s given. To primarily worship Him , to usher others into the place of His presence and to equip others to do the same.

Thanks so much to friends who have been such an important part of this story. My special thanks and gratitude go to Tracy (the one who was never in any doubt of the call) and to Jess, Sam, Lily and Lizzie as you have been in every page of the reality of this history with God. May He continue to be honoured in our lives and may many more encounter Him and His goodness as we look to serve Him y or a testimonyyou wantedto share abouttimewespent way please get in touch through our contact page at p.com 26
