arm weather calls for living alfresco, and today, more people are doing just that. In fact, 68 percent of people use their out-‐ door space at least several times a week in seasonal weather. The great outdoors is being touted as “the new indoors,” because we are using our outdoor spaces in much the same way that we use our indoor ones: for eating, relaxing, working, playing, enter-‐ taining and exercising. Whether enclosed or open-‐air, “Today’s outdoor rooms have it all – somewhere to dine, to relax and to be entertained, with furnishings that function like they would for any room in the home, and with style ƪ Ǧ Ǧ ǡdz Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and executive director of its outdoor division, the International Casual Furnish-‐ ings Association.

2

Two current lifestyle trends that mesh well and ƪ “Hygge” and “Mindfulness.” Hygge (pronounced Hoo-‐guh or Hyoo-‐guh) is a Danish term that roughly means comfort, warmth and togetherness. Although we may associate it more with cold weather – wrapping up in a warm throw and hunker-‐ Ƥ Ȃ concept certainly relates to summertime as well. Ƥ Ƥ ǡ marshmallows and make s’mores – something that is increasingly popular in outdoor spaces.

1

3 Ƥ the moment, similar to the concept of “Mindfulness,” a form of meditation. Mindfulness is focused awareness and living in the moment as a way to stay calm against distractions and stress. There is something about practicing it outdoors that makes many people feel more peaceful and alive.

The  key  to  creating  inviting,  livable  outdoor  rooms  is  to  put  the  same  thought  and  care  into  the  furnishings  and  dĂŠcor  that  you  put  into  your  interior  spaces.  Of  course,  comfortable  seating  areas  for  reading,  relaxing  and  socializing  are  of  utmost  importance.  Colorful  accessories  and  ac-â€? cent  lighting  elements  are  also  vital  to  creating  an  inviting  space.  Here  are  some  other  things  to  con-â€? sider  when  setting  up  your  outdoor  living  rooms: Čˆ Dedicate  a  space  to  be  in  the  moment  â€“  a  place  for  peace,  calm  and  mindfulness.  It  can  be  as  simple  as  a  bench  in  the  garden. Čˆ Create  a  space  for  fun  and  entertainment  that  can  also  be  used  to  relax  or  work. Čˆ Incorporate  informal  plantings  that  are  low  maintenance,  look  beautiful  and  attract  wildlife.  Čˆ Grow  herbs  such  as  basil,  chives,  lavender,  mint,  rosemary,  sage,  lemon  balm  and  thyme  to  keep  mosquitoes  away  (and  also  to  cook  with!). Present-Day Etiquette

Don’t Forget to RSVP! Yes, you DO need to RSVP to an invitati0n whether or not you’re attending the event. Here’s what’s proper and why. By Maralee McKee

E

very host would like the guests they invite to an event to RSVP. When guests do not respond by the RSVP date – or not at all – it’s frustrating for the host trying to anticipate attendance for the function, whether it’s a wedding, dinner party, shower or casual get-‐together. An RSVP from a guest is not only a social duty, but also a way to show their appreciation for the invitation to the event – whether they plan attend or not. Here, etiquette expert Maralee McKee explains the rules of RSVPing. What does RSVP mean exactly? RSVP loosely translates from French as “Please Re-‐ spond.” It’s an easy request. It just means that the hosts are asking us to let them know whether we’re coming to their party or event so that they can plan seating, food and anything else they need to arrange for our needs. How quickly should we RSVP? Within 24 hours. Yes, just one day! The same day you receive the invitation is best. A fast response signals that you’re excited to be included in the event! Think of it like this. If I held up a $100 bill and asked whether you wanted it, I doubt you’d wait for two weeks (or forget entirely!) to let me know you wanted the money. Can I wait until the “RSVP By” date to respond? You can, but it’s like showing up late for the party. Fifty years ago, no one put “RSVP” on invitations. Why? Because it was considered really rude. Asking people to RSVP meant that hosts didn’t trust that people would do the right thing on their own without a special request from them. But, times change and etiquette evolves to keep up with current sensibilities – and, in this case, necessity. Sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s, people started adding “RSVP” to their invitations as a reminder for people to respond. More recently, things in the RSVP world have slid further downhill, and now most requests list an “RSVP by” date because people are slow to (or just don’t) RSVP.

PrintsWell “Confetti Sparkle” foil-‐pressed reply card.

What if you don’t know whether your schedule is going to allow you to attend? Go ahead and call the host to acknowledge the invitation the day you receive it. Then ask whether it would be an imposi-‐ tion if you waited to respond until you know your schedule. If you can explain what the event is that you’re waiting to hear ǡ Ǥ Dz ƪ some time that week for a visit, and I don’t know the dates for Ǥ ƪ ǡ ǯ Ǥdz ǯ personal, you don’t need to mention it. Do I have to respond to every invitation? What about parties at people’s homes where I’m supposed to buy something? Yes, even sales parties should receive your RSVP within 24 hours. Typically, sales solicitations don’t need to be responded to, but since this one is being hosted by someone you know, it’s gracious to let her know whether she should set out a chair, provide refreshments, and do things just for you! It’s also very helpful to the person selling the product to know

A timely response is our outward expression of our inward consideration! PRESENT presentmag.com
