Kat and Keb Shop Small, Shop Local The year-round “Shop Small” movement draws particular attention every November, when the holiday shopping season gains momentum. 10 Ways to Repurpose Holiday Cards Clever ideas for utilizing cards after Christmas.
R
eceiving holiday cards from friends and family is an appreciated tradition, but there’s always the dilemma of what to do with them beyond December. Storing them in a drawer for years to come is one option, throwing them out is another, but repurposing them into something decorative and useful for the next holiday season is the best option! Here, greeting card designer Shannon Martin offers clever suggestions for turning all of those Season’s Greetings cards into creative projects that are fun and easy to do.

LUMINARY
So pretty on a mantel, porch or walkway!
Instructions: Cut the backs off of the cards, then scallop the top edges with fancy scissors. Use a paper punch on the sides; lace together with twine, ribbon or yarn; and fill with fairy lights or a votive.

ORNAMENTS
These layered designs were inspired by the beauty of pine cones.
Instructions: Start with a round ornament as a base. Use a 1" paper punch to create small circles from the cards’ covers. Then, begin by pasting a circle on the bottom of the ornament and overlap each row of circles all the way up.

PLACE CARD HOLDERS
Think of these as Dr. Seuss trees ... a little wacky and so whimsical! Instructions: Cut circles out of card covers. Slice them halfway across the diameter, pull the circles into cones and secure with glue. Then, stack onto a wood skewer. Add a star or snowflake to the top and write in guests’ names.

CHRISTMAS TREE
A trio of trees in different sizes is especially eye catching!
Instructions: With such fun scissors out there these days, it’s easy to create cool shapes. Start by cutting the largest circle you can get out of your cards, then get progressively smaller; the one shown has 32 circles. Slide the circles onto a dowel and add a star on top.

WINTER BOUQUET
Add a sprig of pine, holly or cedar to a few paper flowers to take as a hostess gift.
Instructions: Cut two sets of floral shapes out of card covers, then adhere wire between the two layers of paper. Antique buttons and metallic copper-colored paper finish these off nicely.

MOBILE
Add a midcentury vibe to any décor.

DIAMOND GARLAND Drape garlands over doors, around windows, in trees, above entryways – even down the center of a Christmas table.
Instructions: Use 1" discs punched from card covers, and glue back-to-back on twine. Attach multiple rows to a thin rod, then hang wherever.
Instructions: For this diamondshaped garland, cut the card covers into squares. Glue them back-to-back on twine, or use your favorite ribbon or yarn.

PAPER CHAIN
A vintage favorite to hang from trees (or even chandeliers), paper chains are so fun to make!
Instructions: Just cut strips from your old cards, and glue (or staple) the ends. The ¾" strips used here are 6" long.

CARD BANNER/FLAG
Welcome friends and family with this friendly banner hung on a wall or mantel.
Instructions: Slit card covers up to the top of the image. Then, punch four holes in the top of each card and thread them onto yarn. (Hint: If you stroke the paper strips between your finger and thumb, they will curl up slightly.)

GIFT TAGS
For bottles and bags, these tags come in handy and are a great way to personalize any gift.
Instructions: Cut the front of the card into a circle with fancy scissors. With a paper punch, cut holes around the outside of the card. Then, wrap the edges with twine, leaving some extra twine to tie the tag onto a gift bag, box or bottle.

Holiday Shopping Advice Ten ways to spread holiday cheer while you shop.
T
he holidays: the joy, the snow, the rush … the frustration, the bad tempers, the rudeness! Here are 10 tips on how to keep your cool this holiday season and even spread some cheer along the way.

1. Smile. You can’t do it enough. Your face (and your soul) will thank you for it. 2. Lose the ‘Bah Humbug!’ attitude. Yes, stores will be crowded, there will be lines, and it will take some time to find a parking spot. Don’t let that dampen your holiday spirit. (Planning on a little extra time helps, too.) 3. Use “Please, Thank You, and You’re Welcome.” Make this your mantra and you will smooth the way for better service and create a kinder atmosphere wherever you go. 4. Be gracious. You have circled the parking lot for the fifth time when you spy a space opening up, only to see that someone else is already waiting for it. Be gracious: they were there first, so let it go.

5. A little patience, please. Checkout counter or airline counter, the rules are the same: First come, first served, and one at a time. (If you need to use your phone, opt for text messages instead of calls so as not to annoy those in line around you.) When it is your turn, be ready with your payment – and a smile! – to speed things along. 6. Friendliness. Hold the door or elevator for other shoppers, and smile and say “hello” to the harried clerk behind the counter. 7. Complain to the proper person. Yelling at a salesclerk because a store is out of an advertised item only makes you look foolish and rude. If you have a problem, ask to speak to the manager. Frame your complaint clearly and simply. (No venting, please.) 8. Cell phones. They’re useful when trying to find out your mom’s glove size, but put them away when you are working with a sales associate or checking out at a register. 9. Shopping with children. Sensory overload says it all: the music, the crowds, the lights, the toys, the Santas! It’s best to arrange to leave your children at home when holiday shopping. If they must accompany you, or when it is their turn to shop, make sure they are well rested and fed, and be ready to head home at the first sign of a meltdown. 10. Hold to your own. Meet rudeness with patience and kindness – you’ll feel better for it, and you’ll inspire some holiday cheer along the way. Warm Gifts for Cool Women Cold-weather apparel and seasonal-themed accessories are always on-trend holiday gifts for women.
A
recent survey among American women regarding the types of holiday gifts they preferred found that the majority – 61 percent – of respondents stated they preferred apparel and accessories, according to Statista. Apparel and accessories are also growing categories in many gift shops, where you’ll find stylish options not available at most bigger-box stores. Jewelry, bags and one-size-fits-most clothing make great holiday gifts for women because they don’t need to be tried on and are unlikely to be returned due to a poor fit. Winter-weather options such as scarves, gloves and hats work well if, like the majority of the country, you or your gift recipients live in a cold climate – or are traveling to visit relatives or friends who do.

Burning Desires Linas Klimavicius knows a unique product when he sees it, and FLATYZ flat candles are definitely unique.
S
ince entering the U.S. market in 2015, FLATYZ – a maker of flat, handmade, decorative candles – has taken the industry by storm. The line can now be found in nearly 2,000 stores across the U.S. and Canada, thanks in part to the efforts of the company’s North American representative, Linas Klimavicius.
Q: What’s the backstory of FLATYZ candles? A: FLATYZ was founded in 2012 in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania, by two candle industry veterans: Darius Igaris and Aidas Gilaitis. After decades of working in the commodity candle industry in Eastern Europe, they yearned to express their full creative potential and set out to create a unique, handmade candle. After three years of research and development, they finally perfected and patented a flat and drip-resistant candle, which came with its own stand. Having a flat candle surface allowed them to be creative in terms of design and the techniques for applying the art. To this day, FLATYZ is the only producer of this type of decorative, handmade, flat candle in the world. Q: How and when did you get involved in distributing FLATYZ candles in the U.S.? A: My partner, Joe Petruziello, and I have an international trade business that was established in 1996 (Point One International, Ltd.); we represent manufacturers, engage in global trade, and provide international sales and sourcing advice to our customers. A significant part of what our global team engages in is discovering and representing international companies that have clearly defined competitive advantages in whatever market we’re taking them into. I call them “gems” – and FLATYZ is one of those gems. Q: How many styles did the company initially launch with, and about how many are in the line today? A: FLATYZ started with a half-dozen designs that were very much European and primarily focused on the Christmas holiday theme. Since that time, the company has created more than 500 designs including nature, coastal, greetings and fine-art collections, as well as custom designs. Each year, roughly 30 percent of the least popular designs are replaced with new and fresh designs that command mass appeal but offer something unique for every geographic region.

Makers & Shakers Q: What are some of FLATYZ’s best-selling styles? A: Traditionally, the best-selling designs have been from the holiday collection, such as winter birds, Christmas trees and an angel. But, over the last few years, we evened out the seasonality and now have phenomenally well-selling designs such as a butterfly, poppies, sailboat, peacock, birthday candle, hummingbird and so on. Our fine-art pieces featuring artwork by Monet, Van Gogh, Klimt and Kandinsky sell well in museums and galleries. Q: What is the basic process for creating these unique flat candles? A: From stringing square, wooden frames with organic cotton wicks; to formulating the paraffin mass at just the right temperature; Each FLATYZ candle is to pouring, shaving, dipping, decorating, assembling and packaging – everything is handmade. done by hand. The partners are responsible for creating most of the hand-painted designs available; and some custom designs are requested by FLATYZ customers. Prototypes are then created by in-house designers and artists. Individual decorators are painstakingly trained to replicate a design from candle to candle. Various techniques are used to reproduce an image onto the candle’s surface, including painting, etching, embossing, spraying and so on, depending on the design. Q: How many artisans does the company employ in Lithuania to craft and decorate the candles by hand? A: There are a dozen full-time, in-house decorators and many more artisans available on an as-needed basis through the cottage industry as demand for order fulfillment rises, especially during the holiday season. Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever given? A: I had a grandfather as big as life itself (he passed away a couple of years ago). Since I migrated to the U.S. in the mid 1990s, I would only have a chance to spend time with him when I would return back to Lithuania a couple of times a year, which unfortunately meant that I missed most of the birthdays and family gatherings back in the old country. One year for his birthday, I had flowers delivered to him by a saxophonist who also played his favorite tune for him right in the doorway of his house for all of his neighbors to hear. It left him speechless, and I heard that he retold this story hundreds of times and could never do it with a dry eye. I felt it reinforced a very special bond between us. Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? A: It’s definitely my family. It is hard to imagine anything in the world having meaning without my wife, my five-year-old son and my six-year-old daughter. They always have a way to put things in perspective and to keep me grounded.

that we associate with getting “high.” CBD derivatives are non-psychoactive. How is CBD made? CBD is extracted primarily from the hemp plant and then mixed with various carrier agents, such as coconut oil, to produce the desired products. There are varying methods of CBD extraction: broad spectrum, full spectrum and isolate. While broad and full spectrum might have trace THC elements, they are lower than the legal limit and will not show up in drug testing. Some consumers prefer the broad/full spectrum choice, as they receive a more holistic effect than pure isolate, which is devoid of any THC. Others prefer the isolate version, which is CBD in its purest form. How do you know if you’re purchasing high-quality CBD products? Always ask if the brand has a Certificate of Analysis (COA), which is a document from an accredited laboratory that shows the quantity of various cannabinoids in a product. This is still a self-regulated industry, so the COA is important in proving that the amount of CBD is as claimed in the product. What are the different types of CBD products? There are two main categories of CBD products: topical and ingestible. When thinking about how to use CBD products, consider what you are trying to treat. For example, if targeted pain relief is needed; a salve, ointment, lotion or roll-on will zero in on the area for immediate relief. The CBD is absorbed through the skin, and our brains are naturally programmed to receive the benefits quickly, so topical usage is a quick and efficient pain-management method.
CBD is well known to alleviate inflammation, so ingesting it sublingually (under the tongue) through oils and tinctures can provide a longer-term platform of health management. Additional products include transdermal patches, capsules, infused edibles, sublingual sprays and more. There are even CBD products geared to dogs and cats, providing anti-anxiety and other useful natural remedies for our four-legged friends. Is medical research being done on CBD? Studies are being done throughout the world on the effectiveness of CBD. Medical trials are being conducted for epilepsy, cancer, depression, diabetes and a host of others diseases. As with any health supplement, it’s always suggested to let your doctors know if you plan to use CBD. If CBD sounds too good to be true, it’s not. There are thousands of anecdotal stories of people who are experiencing its benefits every day.
