January 20, 2010 For immediate release Contact: Rebecca Roberts, 404-688-3353, ext. 13 Atlantans who have never seen inside the Burns Cottage or wandered the narrow streets of Whittier Mill Village will have the chance to explore some of the city’s historic and architectural gems during The Atlanta Preservation Center’s “Phoenix Flies,” an annual celebration of historic sites around the city. The 2010 event kicks off March 6 and runs through March 22. During the 17 days of the “The Phoenix Flies” Atlantans and visitors alike will enjoy exploring some of the city’s most treasured historic sites, including homes, churches, neighborhoods, cemeteries and schools. The list of more 100 free events also features art centers, bed and breakfast inns and theaters. Scheduled events include bus and walking tours, lectures, exhibits, story telling, puppet-making demonstrations and more. This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Atlanta Preservation Center and its efforts to preserve the city's architectural heritage, as well as the seventh time the APC has organized the "Phoenix." “Preservation is a varied enterprise that includes many, many things that most people don’t realize are a part of their day-to-day lives,” said APC executive director Boyd Coons. “The ‘Phoenix’ celebrates the mission of the APC and the missions of our 45 preservation partners, all of whom are striving to make Atlanta a better place with a richer built environment.” New to this year's "Phoenix" lineup are: - Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.; - Burns Club cottage in Ormewood Park; - Castleberry Hill neighborhood; - Cathedral of St. Philip in Buckhead; - Druid Hills Presbyterian Church; - Goddard Chapel at Grady Hospital; - 1892 Grady Hospital building; - New Hope AME Church in Buckhead; - Paideia School; - Ponce de Leon apartments; - Puppetry Arts; - Stonehurst Place Bed and Breakfast; - Whittier Mill Village neighborhood; - WonderRoot Arts organization.
