Presidio Hill School Impact Report 2023-2024
Presidio Hill School has been an integral part of San Francisco for over a century, rooted in a legacy of progressive education and a commitment to fostering meaningful connections. Our school’s history is built on the strength of our community—a community that values inclusion, collaboration, and the shared growth of all members.
In this report, we celebrate the ways our community comes together to support our students and one another. From cherished traditions that bring families closer, to connections with our alumni, to new initiatives that honor the diversity of our students, staff, and families, Cultivating Community has helped PHS strengthen the relationships that are essential for collaboration, growth, and shared purpose. These efforts ensure that every member of our community feels valued and supported, as well as help build a foundation where students can thrive both academically and personally. As you explore this report, we invite you to reflect on how the intentional cultivation of our incredible community makes Presidio Hill a truly special place to learn and grow for all.
Dedicated to progressive education since 1918, Presidio Hill School challenges young people to imagine, inquire, and create. Our students engage San Francisco and The Presidio as an extended classroom and become empowered learners who are responsible, committed to justice, and optimistic about the future.
The Presidio Hill School ABC’S are the school’s guiding principles and inform curriculum, socialemotional learning, and interpersonal interactions:

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
As a PHS community, we honor the Traditional Custodians of the unceded land on which we gather, and recognize their connection to land, water, all living creatures, and community. Our school is located on the traditional lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone People. We pay our respect to their community - past, present, and future.
Dear PHS Community,
Thank you for taking the time to read through Presidio Hill School’s Annual Impact Report for the 2023-2024 school year. This report shares the key moments and progress from the past year and celebrates the work of students, faculty, and families. Now, in our 107th year educating students, connecting with families, and supporting teachers in San Francisco, we reflect on the strength of our history and the community that has sustained and enriched our school for over a century.
This school year’s theme, Cultivating Community, serves as a guide for Presidio Hill to strengthen connections across all aspects of school life. Last year, we focused on inclusion by formalizing a plan for school-wide heritage celebrations. These events honor the diverse backgrounds of our families and foster shared understanding and appreciation across our community. We also welcomed the full return of cherished Presidio Hill traditions that had been adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic—such as Follies, May Festival, the Art Show, and the Book Fair. These traditions have been part of our school’s experience for decades; they provide moments of connection and belonging as well as reinforce the relationships that make our school community so strong.
To help families stay connected to the day-today learning on campus, we also introduced classroom spotlight newsletters. These updates give a clear view of the academic work and projects that shape each student’s journey and demonstrate the scope of learning from TK to eighth grade. Sharing this window into our classrooms strengthens the partnership between families and the school, a key aspect of what makes our community thrive.
Finally, another priority has been fostering a strong faculty community. Through professional development, collaborative work, and intentional time to share ideas, we have created opportunities for teachers to grow as individuals and leaders and to support one another. Cultivating the staff community both directly benefits PHS students by enriching the teaching and learning in our classrooms and also benefits the wider San Francisco and national community by allowing Presidio Hill School teachers to take their experience and knowledge into another sphere and share them with other educators.
Each of these efforts reflects the importance of cultivating community at Presidio Hill. Whether through traditions, daily learning, or faculty collaboration, the relationships we build here create a foundation for student growth and success. These connections ensure that PHS remains a place where students are supported in their learning and inspired to reach their full potential.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our school and its mission. I look forward to seeing what we will accomplish together in the coming year.

I am thrilled to join the Presidio Hill School leadership team in 202425 as Associate Head of School and contribute to the engaged and welcoming community that makes PHS so special. With nearly 30 years of experience in education, I bring a deep passion for fostering connections and creating environments where children and adults alike can thrive.
My journey to PHS has been shaped by a commitment to learning and community-building, from my early career in the UK to roles in Boston, Washington, D.C., and here in the Bay Area. Alongside my professional experience, I find great joy in discovering new places with my partner and our
two children, a 9th grader and a 4th grader, whose energy and curiosity remind me daily of the value of exploration and growth.
This year, I look forward to collaborating with our incredible faculty and staff as well as partnering with families to cultivate a community where students feel supported, curious, and inspired. Together, we will continue to nurture a love of learning and foster meaningful connections that enrich the experience of every child. Partnerships between home and school are central to this work, and I am eager to connect with you to share ideas, insights, and perspectives.
At PHS, we believe that cultivating community is essential to supporting students and strengthening the ties that bind us as educators, families, and neighbors. I look forward to a year filled with shared successes, meaningful partnerships, and opportunities to grow together.
Dear PHS Community,
As stewards of Presidio Hill School, the Board of Trustees carries the responsibility of preserving Presidio Hill School’s mission while guiding it toward a sustainable future. This responsibility requires thoughtful planning, careful oversight, and a focus on the longterm stability of the school. During the last school year, we have focused on ensuring that the school remains strong and adaptable for generations to come, advancing work that aligns with the broader goals outlined in the strategic plan and, ultimately, supports the students, faculty, and families that make up our incredible community.
The Board has recently focused on key priorities to support Presidio Hill School, including strengthening our financial stability, enhancing our campus, formalizing board onboarding and training, fostering a sense of belonging across our community, and ensuring alignment with our core values. Over the past school year, we reviewed the school’s bylaws to ensure that our governance framework reflects the evolving needs of the institution. We also facilitated an all-school belonging exercise to foster deeper connections across students, families, and staff and opened new non-tuition
revenue streams to strengthen financial sustainability. These accomplishments reflect our collaboration with PHS administration and are closely tied to the goals outlined in the recently adopted Strategic Plan. This foundational work supports our ability to remain a leader in progressive education and provides a solid structure for future growth.
The review of the bylaws ensures that our governance remains clear, relevant, and prepared to address the complexities of running an independent school in today’s landscape. By aligning our governance structure with current best practices, we aim to safeguard institutional stability while enabling a nimble response as new opportunities and challenges arise.
The formalization of onboarding and training processes has strengthened the governance capacity of the Board. New members now benefit from a comprehensive handbook, which outlines roles, responsibilities, and key practices for each Board Committee, ensuring that they are prepared to contribute effectively from the start. Ongoing training for the full Board reinforces these best practices, promoting a culture of accountability, collaboration, and shared vision.
The recent Belonging exercise led by the DEIJB committee and Multicultural Leadership Team during our Spring All School Meeting was an essential step in strengthening connections within the PHS community. By creating space for individuals to share their experiences, reflect on the meaning of belonging, and engage in dialogue, we reinforced the importance of inclusion as a cornerstone of our values. The feedback and connections formed during this activity guide how we approach broader initiatives aimed at fostering a sense of community for all.
Opening non-tuition revenue streams is an opportunity to build a more sustainable financial model. These efforts allow us to reduce reliance on tuition while supporting innovative summer programming and maintaining accessibility for a wide range of families so that PHS can remain financially stable without compromising our mission or values.
The work of the Board is not done in isolation. We rely on strong partnerships with school leadership and the broader community. This collaboration ensures that the strategic goals remain aligned with the school’s mission and the needs of current and future students. Together, we are building a foundation that will allow PHS to thrive for another century and beyond.
Thank you for your ongoing support and trust as we carry forward this important work. It is a privilege to serve this community and to play a role in safeguarding the future of Presidio Hill School.
With gratitude,
Seema Dala & Jonathan Maguire Co-Chairs, Board of Trustees
Thank you to our generous donors who supported the Presidio Hill (Annual) Fund this year. Your gift directly benefited our students and educators, strengthening our core programs and curriculum, enhancing classroom resources, supporting flexible tuition, and providing valuable professional development for our dedicated faculty and staff.
Here are just a few of the wonderful initiatives your gift made possible during the 2023-24 school year:
Key Curricular Initiatives: PHS continues to systemize our work in the sphere of environmental stewardship and sustainability, as well as our efforts to improve student learning related to the social justice standards and anti-bias/anti-racist curriculum. Environmental stewardship as well as social justice standards and anti-bias/anti-racist curriculum have been foundational to our school mission and values since our founding, and are woven throughout our current program and history. Based on extensive work done this year by our faculty and staff alongside outside experts in these fields, our learning goals (benchmarks) for students are as follows:
• Builds a strong connection to the place where they live and contributes to its continuous health.
• Understands the intersection of culture, history, environmental justice, and ecological principles, in the Presidio and beyond.
• Designs and implements sustainable practices in their daily lives, and they advocate for collective action towards a sustainable future.
• Participates and engages in learning focused on identity, diversity, justice, and/or action.
• Demonstrates age-appropriate initiative with an equity and justice mindset.
• Demonstrates understanding of grade-level social justice concepts and vocabulary.
We were thrilled to host an array of fantastic guest speakers who enriched our students’ learning experiences this year. Rosetta Lee led dynamic anti-bias assemblies for our 5th-8th graders, fostering important discussions on inclusivity and respect. Our Middle School students had the unique opportunity to work with San Francisco Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin, who guided them through a powerful spoken word poetry unit that culminated in an inspiring assembly performance. And the Ohlone Sisters shared their cultural heritage with all grade levels, deepening our students’ understanding and appreciation of indigenous traditions. These are just a few of the speakers who made a lasting impression on our school community this year.
Our overnight trips are integral to our communitybuilding goals for upper-elementary and middle school grades, aligning with our progressive education focus on the benefits of experiential learning and learning in nature. These experiences foster teamwork, personal growth, and a deep connection with the natural world. Our 4th grade students immersed themselves in the Web of Life Field (WOLF) School, while the 5th graders embarked on their annual adventure to Angel Island. The 6th grade kicked off their school year with an overnight trip to Presidio National Park.
The 7th graders explored Mt. Cross with guidance from Naturalists at Large, and our 8th graders enjoyed an unforgettable experience at Yosemite National Park. These trips offer students unique opportunities to explore, learn, and grow outside the traditional classroom setting, creating lasting memories and reinforcing our school’s commitment to holistic education.
As a middle school science teacher at Presidio Hill School, I feel fortunate that our students have direct access to a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot: the Presidio National Park. In my teaching experience, nature is the ultimate classroom, offering unique teachable moments with every visit - the seasonal fog pattern as it pours through our neighborhood, the sight of a coyote walking through its habitat, the creeks at El Polín Spring swelling after a rainstorm, or a 15-minute morning walk to the redwood forest. I have personally witnessed moments like these capture students’ interest, ignite their curiosity, and spark authentic thinking. In these common yet unplanned encounters, our students not only deepen their appreciation for science but also develop a greater understanding of the complexity and seasonal change in San Francisco. Although much of my science curriculum is directly connected to our science laboratory, these teachable moments in nature remind me that the best lessons often come when we least expect them, allowing us all to observe, connect, and ask questions. Get outside!
““Something I love about PHS is the fun experiments we do. Whether it’s a stem chemical experiment or a social studies capture the flag (America vs Great Britain), PHS has let me learn in unique ways I would have never thought I would get to learn in.
Presidio Hill School is a magical place of lifelong learning that has a tremendous impact on students, parents, educators, staff and the broader San Francisco community. It is a culture that we not only experience, but contribute mindfully to. PHS empowers our children to love themselves and their communities and to grow and maintain their sense of self, purpose and belonging. PHS is a school where our children learn to be rooted and expansive. It is foundational for establishing and strengthening the connections between students, families, communities and our legacies.
I’ve learned so much this year, and I’m excited for all the new things I’ll discover next!
We love that Cecilia is excited about coming to school and finding her smiling and content when we pick her up. She has made and continues making sweet connections with her peers and adults/ teachers at school. We love that she gets the opportunity to do handson projects, excited about the new woodworking workshop, and the arts and music education. Lastly we really love that she gets time at the Presidio, as we feel that nature is essential in her education.
“Progressive education is at the heart of my pedagogy. I am rooted in Presidio Hill’s core values of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging, and I share our community’s commitment to teaching social justice to all learners. Building relationships with students is my favorite part of my day – the energy, curiosity, humor, and life lessons continue to fuel my passion for teaching and hope that the next generation will use their voices to fight systems of oppression.
Another highlight is getting to know families more deeply when teaching more than one sibling. Getting to know families is so special, and it makes me feel part of a larger community with similar values. I’m so grateful to be a part of it.
Our family is incredibly grateful for Presidio Hill School and its inclusive community. Both Wyatt (‘24) and Zoey (‘26) have built many lifelong friendships here—and so have we as parents. The school’s unique proximity to the Presidio and its progressive, thoughtful curriculum has fostered our children’s intrinsic motivation to learn and given them a sense of purpose to make a positive impact in the world. Presidio Hill is a special place, and we feel fortunate to be part of this inspiring community.

We are thrilled to announce the completion of our theater upgrades, made possible by generous support of the Staging Success Fund-a-Need campaign during Spring Fling 2024. These updates have transformed our
In addition to upgraded lighting, new shelving, fresh flooring, and beautiful paint, we also added a gallery wall featuring cherished PHS memories. These visual upgrades have all combined to elevate the theater into a space that truly shines, and which represents the connection and history of our school.
A centerpiece of the upgrades is the stunning mural created by PHS alum and renowned San Francisco muralist Amos Goldbaum ‘02 . Amos’s work, often seen across the city, captures iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Sutro Tower as well as the essence of everyday San Francisco life. For the Presidio Hill School Theater, he
designed a custom mural that reflects our PHS campus and the surrounding Presidio. This artwork serves as a backdrop for our performances and stands as a meaningful tribute to the creativity and connection that define PHS.
In addition to physical upgrades, the Staging Success campaign enabled PHS to enhance our performing arts program. This year, students will have the opportunity to participate in drama and improv workshops which foster their creativity, collaboration, and confidence. These workshops have begun to bring new energy to the theater and ensure it remains a space where students can explore their talents and grow as individuals.
The Staging Success campaign reflects our commitment to both place and program,
enhancing our performing arts offerings while creating a space that supports learning, creativity, and connection. Thank you to all the donors who helped us bring this vision to life. Together, we have created a space that will inspire generations of PHS students to come.
