A designated Wisconsin Bird City and home to nesting Osprey and Eagle. Our glacial hills and crystal waters will make you an enthusiastic discoverer of Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. Hunting When considering the thousands of acres of prime hunting grounds surrounding Presque Isle, it is difficult to envision a more ideal place to base your trip. We are sandwiched between the Ottawa National Forest with more than one million acres of public land to the North, and the Northern Highland State Forest with over 250,000 acres of public lands in each of the other directions. In addition, paper company land, managed forest cropland, and other large tracts provide enthusiasts with many more acres to explore.
Key Dates: • Northwoods Bird Festival at the North Lakeland Discovery Center and highlighting two Presque Isle locations: May 12-13 • Wild Game and Natural Foods Cook-Off hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and welcoming all cooks & chefs: September 24 • youth Turkey, Waterfowl, and Deer Hunts in April, September, and October. Healthy communities are the sum of many parts, including birds. Bird City Wisconsin mobilizes citizens and public officials who know birds are more than beautiful - they are significant. Presque Isle is proud to have maintained our Bird City status over the years.

Heritage Cottage Museum: The Presque Isle Heritage Society is committed to preserving the past history of the town of Presque Isle, formerly known as Fosterville and Winegar. The all-volunteer group takes care of a seasonal cottage along Main Street that houses historical collections and artifacts of people long ago. Open by appointment or seasonal hours Memorial Day to Labor Day. Little Free Library: Visit spots throughout Town
to drop off your favorite book for others to enjoy, or to select a new one of your own. More information at LittleFreeLibrary.org
Presque Isle Community Library: Our Library

Recent productions have included “Don’t Dress for Dinner,” and “Tuna Does Vegas”. Each production is followed by delicious desserts and beverages. 715-686-2910 | PresqueIsle.com |

Biking: Northern Wisconsin is fast becoming a biking mecca due to its diverse trails, scenic routes, and friendly hospitality. • Border Trails System: Cyclists will find these paved backroad trails provide an exceptional scenery and sense of quiet. Located along the Wisconsin border, the system runs over 100 miles into Michigan through some of the most beautiful, rolling lake country the region has to offer. Parking available at the Presque Isle Community Center. • Heart of Vilas County: Choose from over 60 miles of connected trails in Vilas and Iron Counties. The trail is fully paved and appropriate for all types of bicycles, and includes many stopover spots along the way, from ice cream parlors to crystal clear waters and beaches, from scenic bridges to picnic tables. • Presque Isle Road Trail: Start in downtown Presque Isle and follow the road route and easy off-road sections as you loop around ponds, take in the quiet back roads, and enjoy a nice out and back ride, with areas to stop and enjoy a swim or picnic.
Paddling: Take your pick... from intimate river paddles to large lake paddles. Choose your boat... a kayak, canoe, stand up paddleboard, or try out a new pedal paddleboard. Remember, our name in French means "almost an island" which means water, water everywhere. Stop by the Chamber office for a copy of our new Canoe Trails map, which identifies a dozen trips, from two to six hours in length and at varying degrees of difficulty.
Snowmobiling: The Presque Isle region offers hundreds of miles of trails meandering through vast stretches of pine and hardwood forests, and around numerous lakes. We are blessed by the Lake Superior Snowbelt and see more snow than most other Wisconsin locations. Ride to a new Vilas County or Upper Peninsula destination every day of the week, experiencing fantastic scenery, hospitable restaurants and taverns, and cozy lodges. The Sno-Bunnies do a superb job of grooming, with frequent endorsements as "the best trails in the region." For more information, visit MidwestSnowmobiling.com 715-686-2910 | PresqueIsle.com |

Our History Then... Nearly 300 years ago, shipwrecked French priests on the shores of Lake Superior made their way down a river to an area they christened “Presque Isle,” or “Almost an Island,” because of the vast stretches of lakes and rivers that dwarfed the land. The advent of the logging era brought development to the area in the early 1900’s. In 1905, Presque Isle was known as Fosterville, after one J.J. Foster who built and operated a large saw mill. William S. Winegar bought the mill in 1910 and the fledgling community was renamed “Winegar”.
page 32 | Info@PresqueIsle.com
When the mill closed in 1933, the great “Lumber Baron” era came to an end. Today the mill ponds are visible from the village and provide a refuge for birds and wildlife. In l955, the village name was changed once again. Reflecting the wisdom and farsightedness of early French missionary priests, we finally became... “Presque Isle” - Almost an Island. A visit to the Heritage Society Museum in downtown Presque Isle will take you back to these simpler times.
