Come to the

Clinton County Fair! By Dan Heath for the Press-Republican

PLATTSBURGH — Audiences have a chance to see a living legend perform at the 69th-annual Clinton County Fair. The Charlie Daniels Band takes the stage at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 19. Clinton County Fair Manager Glenn Gillespie said he was thrilled to book the American icon just before Christmas last year. “I’ve been here 17 years. This was the first time I’ve been able to buckle an artist down so early,” he said. Gillespie said he has always wanted to do that, as he could then start advertising for ticket sales. Those made a wonderful Christmas present, and they have sold almost 1,000 tickets for that show already. “His tickets have been selling like crazy. It’s going to be a wonderful concert,” he said. FLYING TRAPEZE Gillespie said he saw Daniels play at Daytona two years ago, and the 80-yearold artist shows no signs of slowing down. Other grandstand shows include the Vermont Garden Tractor Pullers Association on opening day, July 18; New York Sire Stakes Harness Racing on July 20, a Street Legal Truck Pull on July 21, Adirondack Tractor Pullers on July 22 and two Demolition Derby shows on July 23. Some traditional favorites are set to return for multiple free shows, such as Buffalo Barfield and “Unherd” of

Entertainment, Master Hypnotist Michael Blaine, Pipsqueak’s Party Time Clown Show and North Country’s Got Talent. One new attraction, the High Flying Pages Aerial and Animal Thrill Show, will perform multiple shows daily, featuring trapeze and horseback acrobats. OBVIOUS OBSTACLES Gillespie’s assistant manager, Jared Hogle, was instrumental in bringing another new attraction, the Ultimate Parkour Experience. Parkour practitioners use commonplace objects such as cars, walls, staircases and buildings as an obstacle course for a combination of running, climbing and tumbling. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Gillespie said. He’s also hired about 20 local bands to play at various times throughout the week. The fair is one of the region’s best family friendly entertainment values, he said. This year marks the introduction of an Old Fashioned Dollar Day on July 20, with $1 off the $8 admission and rides for $1 each (minimum 10 tickets). Vendors have also been encouraged to have at least one item available for $1 as well. $4 DEAL The $20 Mega Pass remains a top seller. Purchased by July 17, it provides admission and free rides for any one day. Gillespie said savvy fair-goers use the admission for an adult and give the ride bracelet to a

child 12 years old or younger, who gets free admission anyway. Opening Day is only $4, for everyone 4 years old or older. The goal is get as many as possible to stop by and see what’s available this year, he said. “Where else can you see this much for $4?” Gillespie said. GROWING GOATS Agriculture remains a staple, with 4-H and others involved in multiple livestock exhibitions and judging. Categories include horses, cattle, goats, dogs, swine, rabbits, sheep and poultry. The staff continues to make improvements to the grounds, Gillespie said. This year they built an addition to one building to make room for an ever increasing number of goat exhibitors. They also spent $5,000 on new

signage to help emergency responders navigate the grounds if needed. “Safety is a big thing here at the fair. That’s the first thing we think of,” Gillespie said Law enforcement and emergency personnel are on grounds throughout, and staff keeps an eye on the weather radar, so they can warn people if a storm is blowing in. FULL BLOOM This is Gillespie’s 17th year as manager. A former corrections officer, he started as assistant manager after he retired and took over the following year. “I enjoy meeting with people, I enjoy talking with people,” he said. “I walk around this ground during fair week. “It’s just an amazing thing to see when it’s in full bloom.”
