Eagles motivated by early playoff exit BY WILLIE SANTANA Press-Republican BEEKMANTOWN — Loading up on talent is a staple of Beekmantown football. This season is no different. The Eagles boast 41 players on their roster, a huge offensive line and playmakers on both sides of the ball. Beekmantown coach Jamie Lozier said the team will look to use its depth to gain an edge. “Our philosophy is to play as many kids as we can and stay competitive,” Lozier said. “Practices are going well. We are doing extra conditioning and spending a good amount of time in the weight room. Things are starting to come together.” The Eagles’ focus on conditioning stems from the team’s lackluster performance in its 26-21 loss to Peru in the Section VII Class B semifinal.
Beekmantown wrapped up the season with a 4-4 record. Lozier said the defeat is motivation this season, especially for the senior class. “We made a lot of mental mistakes in the Peru game,” Lozier said. “Our focus for the beginning of this year has been to cut back on our mental mistakes. We’ve upped our conditioning because that’s where the mental mistakes really come from.” Beekmantown lost 18 seniors, including Dominick Bordeau and Cris Arzola, who finished with 15 touchdowns and led Section VII in rushing yards (1,215). Under center for the Eagles will be senior Cade Preston. “He’s a big kid,” Lozier said. “He can throw, and he’s a smart kid. We are looking to give him a go, but you’re definitely also going to see Brandon Belrose at quarterback. “He’s too talented not to have him back
there. He’s got a gift for making plays, so he’ll be a big part of our offense as well. Hopefully, Cade can work out of the quarterback spot, and we’ll use Brandon when we need to or when we want to.” Lozier said the Eagles have several backs that will step in to fill the void left by Arzola. “The guys who are back there are just as fast as Arzola, so we’re pretty lucky there,” Lozier said. “Christian Moura is a senior, and he’s the quickest kid on our team. He’ll be in the backfield sharing time with Kaden Myers and Garrett Stephens, so we have a nice mix.” When it comes to newcomers, Lozier said JV call-up Carson Lapier will have an impact right away at tight end. “He’s about 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds,” Lozier said. “He doesn’t drop anything within his radius. He is huge. You put him down with our big offensive line, and we have high hopes for this year.” No. On the defensive end, Lozier 1 said that the team has plenty 2 of speed but will need a lot of 3 younger guys to step up and con4 tribute as well. 7 As far as coaching personnel 8 goes, Beekmantown will wel9 come Joe Fish, who received a 10 teaching job at the school, as a 11 volunteer coach. 14 Fish was the head coach for Sa15 ranac last season. 19 Lozier said Fish will help in 20 the team’s push for being much 21 more versatile. 22 Among other duties, Fish has 23 been working with the defensive 24 and offensive lines. 27 “Joe is from Beekmantown,” 28 Lozier said. “I coached him. “He (Pete) coached me,” Lozier said. “He did special teams way back in ‘95. He’s doing our special teams now, and it’s unbelievable. I learn every time he does special teams. “Our other focus is going to be to have the best special teams in the section. Peru eyes title repeat with humble mentality BY JOEY LAFRANCA Press-Republican
PERU — It’s not how you start, but how you finish. That may be cliché, but that’s the motto the Peru football team followed in 2017. The Indians finished the regular season 1-6 but rattled off a 26-21 victory against Beekmantown in the Section VII Class B semifinal before taking down Plattsburgh High, 7-6, for the sectional championship. Peru’s year ended with a 52-31 loss to Section X’s Gouverneur in a NYSPHSAA regional semifinal, but Indians coach Ryon O’Connell said his 2018 squad can take plenty of lessons from the past and apply them to the present. “Last year, the theme was ‘Rise as one,’” O’Connell said. “This year, the theme is ‘We’ll never give up.’ “That’s what we stress to the kids after the way we started last season and how we ended up. We stressed that if they kept going, good things would happen. We got fortunate in the semifinals, and

In addition to the anticipated receiving skill, Lestyn Williams highlights Plattsburgh’s running backs. In my head, all I think about is the fact we lost 7-6 in the championship game, and that’s so close.” Inexperience, Keleher noted, on the offensive and defensive lines tops his list of concerns, admitting a lack of depth as well as experience up front could be problematic but not something that should create longterm consequences. Nate Parmeter, Andy Brown and Alex Brown have the most experience of all the linemen on Plattsburgh. Parmeter believes the Hornets can work together and develop a formidable force of linemen that can help Plattsburgh achieve its ultimate goals. “I want to go out and finish what we started last season and finish my senior season well,” Parmeter said. “It’s a lot of motivation when you think about how last season ended. That’s my motivation every day now, and I just want to work hard and want all of us to do the same.” Parmeter as well as Williams and Phillips, Keleher said, have taken it upon themselves as seniors to provide leadership for the Hornets. Keleher expressed Phillips’ skill at strong safety as a key aspect to Platts-
burgh’s pass defense and wants one of the Hornets’ top strengths last season to once again provide success. “Defensively, not many teams could throw the ball against us last year, but they ran it down our throats,” Keleher said. “We have to put teams in a position where they have to throw the ball because our strength is in the secondary and the perimeter.” Phillips said team speed needs to be the attribute Plattsburgh’s defense deploys the most as the Hornets eye a sectional championship. “We need to play together and play for each other instead of just as individuals,” Phillips said. “Playing in a championship last year is something I have wanted to do my whole career. of returners and newcomers. “This roster that we have is exciting because we have a complete team, and I don’t think we really have a weak spot,” Everleth said. “We are well balanced with a ton of speed, but we have a ton of size as well. Our line has an average weight of about 280 pounds, and around here in this area, you can’t get much better than that.” Luke Maye will be back under center for his senior year with the Chiefs, looking to build off last season that saw him rack up 1,515 passing yards and 14 touchdowns to go along with 451 yards on the ground and seven rushing scores. The Saranac quarterback has high expectations for the Chiefs’ offense. “We’re capable of so much,” Maye said. “We have so much speed and agility, and I don’t think any team is really going to be able to stop us. We just have to keep working hard and keep moving forward with our ultimate goals. “It’s going to be nice not being the underdog for once.” Maye has some familiar targets to throw to thanks to Jacob Nolan (644), Isaac Garman (408) and Andy LeBeau (349), who combined for 1,401 receiving yards last season, all returning. The trio of senior receivers wants to produce at a high level once again, and Garman said the Chiefs want to continue their success and build for the future. “We want to start a legacy for Saranac football,” he said. “We really have not had that since we have been

Everleth takes over determined Saranac squad BYJOEY LAFRANCA Press-Republican SARANAC — The defending Section VII Class C football champions have a new head coach. Dylan Everleth will be at the helm for Saranac as the Chiefs look to build off their successful campaign a season ago. Everleth, a 2011 Saranac graduate who played three years of football at Cortland, will replace Joe Fish, who spent the past two years as the Chiefs’ varsity head coach. “I think the biggest challenge coming in was just being able to jump on the train when it’s already
rolling and getting acclimated to the kids and understanding what their strengths are,” Everleth said. “How things have gone so far is actually exceeding my expectations to the point where I feel comfortable just adding new goals and trying to find ways to keep improving.” Saranac claimed its sectional title last season, the first football championship in program history, by defeating Saranac Lake, 21-12. The Chiefs finished 2017 with a 5-5 overall record after losing to Ogdensburg Free Academy, 50-20, in a NYSPHSAA Class C regional semifinal. The Red Storm, who graduated 17 seniors from last year’s 2-7 squad, could experience some growing pains. “We are a very young team that is trying to figure out how we are best gonna present ourselves on the field,” Saranac Lake coach Eric Bennett said. “We’ve got a lot of great athletes, and we’re looking for leaders right now. Athletic Conference. “Well, I have no problem saying this: Saranac is loaded this year,” Bennett said. “I think they’ve got athletes everywhere, and they’re gonna be tough to beat. I think they got a great shot of beating anybody this year, and we hope to be competitive right there.” At 71-30, Saranac Lake has the most wins and best winning percentage of any team in the section over the last 10 years, and the Red Storm are striving to get back to their winning ways. “We’re really looking forward to seeing who can do what,” Bennett said. “We’re a very young team, and we’re really talking about perseverance and how to do things the right way. Hopefully, that translates to a special season for us.”

Past prosperity means nothing to Ticonderoga

BY RICKY ST. CLAIR Sports Editor TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga captured each of the last two Champlain Valley Athletic Conference football titles. But the Sentinels are hoping to put their recent achievements in the rear-view mirror. Ticonderoga graduated five of its six First Team AllStars, including conference co-Defensive Player of the Year Hayden Scuderi, from its 8-1 team that suffered a 28-22 loss to Moriah in the Section VII Class D championship. “We’ll do what we’ve always done and just focus on the kids that we have,” Sentinels coach Scott Nephew said. “Good or bad in the past, we don’t focus on what we’ve done in past years. We have some returning kids that will just be in different spots. “They were kind of part of the positive experiences that we had last year.” Three-year quarterback Evan Graney was one of 14 seniors lost to graduation, leaving the door open for junior Terrence Benedict to take over under center. Nephew said Benedict spent the last few years quarterbacking Ticonderoga’s JV team. “Terrence will do whatever we ask of him,” Nephew said. “He’s a smart kid. He can throw the ball a little bit. “He can do what we need him to do.” The Sentinels could have plenty of options in the backfield, with senior Russ Gallo III showing the way as Ticonderoga’s primary back. “He got time last year but not as much as a ball carrier because of the other guys we had,” Nephew said. “He was more of a fullback type, and he played some wide receiver. “We also have Ty Schlogl, who is a returning player at wide receiver. He’ll move back there. Michael DuShane and Bryce Gautreau will both see time back there. Michael’s been a tight end for a couple years, and he’ll see time at tight end also.” The Sentinels will be without Dan Dorsett, who served as Ticonderoga’s defensive coordinator for several seasons. Late in the spring, Dorsett made the decision to step away and spend more time with family and focus on the Sentinels’ historically successful baseball program. Jim Decker will replace Dorsett, and Decker is no stranger to calling the defense. Nephew said Decker was a defensive coordinator for four or five years during Bob Sutphen’s tenure as Ticonderoga’s coach. “We did (collaborate well), and we have that connec-

He took a year off, and then Jim Decker, who has been a varsity coach for us, moved up from JV last year. “We’ve all worked together in some capacity for the last 15 years.” Nephew said Gallo has done a nice job taking over at linebacker, and he’s Decker’s go-to guy for calling plays on defense. DuShane returns for a third year at defensive end, while Gautreau, who Nephew called a good, hardworking kid, will take on a more prominent role this year at linebacker. Schlogl started at corner last season, and he’s expected to be a contributor in the secondary.
