Wildlife. “The popularity of both species of bass has been increasing, and a very healthy resource exists thanks to the lake’s dynamic forage base and modern catchand-release practices.” Available baitfish include sunfish, yellow perch, golden shiners and alewives, said Pientka. “Recently, we’ve really seen the bass’ focus shift from traditional prey species like sunfish and perch to a heavier focus on the alewife population,” he said. “As a result, the bass are very healthy and in plentiful numbers. I fully expect to see a smallmouth tip the scales at 5 pounds or better, and a largemouth over 6 pounds.” He also mentioned that a 20-pound, five-bass limit each day is very likely, which would put the event on par with the one Horton won a decade ago. “It’s been a cool spring and early summer in this part of the country,” Pientka said. “The water north to south is cooler on average for this time of year, and that will impact how anglers approach their patterns. The bass quality won’t suffer very much, but the fish may be spread out and somewhat unpredictable when compared to years past.” Overall, Pientka believes Lake Champlain is in fantastic shape and will really show off when the Elite Series anglers begin competition on Thursday, July 27. Takeoff will occur each morning at 6:15 a.m. ET out of Plattsburgh City Marina, and weigh-in will take place at 3:15 p.m. near the Plattsburgh City Beach. The event is hosted by the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau and the City of Plattsburgh.

Local angling buddies count on home field advantage Brett Carnright and Ryan Latinville finish 5th and 8th at recent Costa FLW Series PLATTSBURGH — They’re fishing the dream. Local anglers, cousins and longtime fishing buddies Brett Carnright and Ryan Latinville recently finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the Costa FLW Series tournament on Lake Champlain. “It was really cool to have us both finish in the top 10. It’s something we’ve worked hard for,” Latinville said. “We’ve fished together since we were about 5 years old.” Over three days, they both caught 15-bass limits, Carnright with 52 pounds and Latinville, 51 pounds, 8 ounces. For their efforts, Carnright took home $11,000 and Latinville, $6,800. While the winner landed 54 pounds, 9 ounces, the duo were close to the third-place weight of 52 pounds, 3 ounces. “We were not even a pound away from $20 grand,” Latinville said.

HOME ADVANTAGE It was a great weekend for local and Vermont anglers, as Chris Adams of Shrewsbury, Vt., came in second; Thomas Lavictoire Jr. of West Rutland, Vt., landed in third; and Rob Lamoy of Chazy came in 10th. On the co-angler side, Bill Spence of St. Albans, Vt., was second and Edward Pecore of Plattsburgh was ninth. “We definitely had a home field advantage,” Carnright said.

SUNUP TO SUNDOWN His and Latinville’s success shows that knowledge of home waters can make a difference, especially when conditions are not what might be expected. With higher than normal water levels, that knowledge and extensive practice allowed them to adapt quickly. “Our practice hours were insane. We practiced from sunup to sundown for days,” Latinville said. They had about 300 bass marked by territory during the weeks leading up to the event. He said they concentrated on the north end of the lake, but didn’t want to get more specific than that. LONG HISTORY Those practice sessions are easier to endure when you’re out there with a friend, they said. Carnright and Latinville grew up together. That included playing hockey on the same side and facing each other on the soccer field. They teamed up to fish about 15 years ago, along the shores of Cumberland Head and then near the mouth of the Saranac River. “We obviously fell in love with it,” Carnright said. They started entering local tourneys around 2008 and have steadily moved up to bigger and bigger events. They have won some team tournaments and also have multiple top 10 finishes in the past. COUNTLESS HOURS Now that Carnright has a bass boat of his own, he and his buddy are able to enter events separately, but continue to practice together. “Now, we want to win,” Latinville said, “and we know we can. We spend countless hours out there, and that’s what it takes. “We both want to see each other do well, but there is also a friendly competition.” They are hoping to continue to build on their most recent success.

The next stop on the Costa FLW series is on the St. Lawrence River in Clayton, followed by the regular season finale on the Potomac River. “Already having a good finish in this one sets us up to have to go to the next ones,” Latinville said. CRAZIEST PUZZLE The top 40 from those three events earn an automatic berth in the Costa FLW championship. A solid finish there could get one or both into the FLW series championship, where even last place is worth $10,000. While they both have good jobs, a chance to make a good living at something they love might be too good an opportunity to pass up. Carnright said one thing he loves about fishing is that the playing field and targets are always changing. It all comes down to the decisions you make based on your experience and knowledge. What worked in the past probably won’t work the next time. For instance, water levels were low last year but are high now. “It’s like the craziest puzzle you could try to put together,” he said. SHARED SECRETS The two friends might have found an edge in their willingness to work together, as many competitive anglers prefer to be loners, keeping their secret stashes of fish to themselves. Latinville said he and Carnright have no such reservations, often casting into the same area as fish move around. “Some of the co-anglers say they’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. “People are amazed that goes on out there.” They agree that the bass fishing on Lake Champlain is great. Latinville said the population seems to be increasing, and they’re catching more every year. “It’s either the lake getting better, or we’re just getting better,” Carnright said.

n baseball, you never say out loud that a pitcher is on his way to a no-hitter. It’ll jinx him. I learned this many years ago while watching Nolan Ryan pitch seven hitless innings. When I revealed this obvious fact to the people sitting around me, you could have heard the “Shhhh!” from the pitcher’s mound. In the same way, Bassmaster Elite Series anglers don’t want you to talk about the fact that they’re leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race, or even that they might have a good chance to grab the lead. In baseball, though, it should be okay to point out that it’s the ninth inning and the bottom of the lineup is up next. If that’s so, then I’m comfortable noting that Brandon Palaniuk is third in the 2017 points race as the Northern Swing begins, and he absolutely loves smallmouth fisheries. The remaining stops this season are all in the North Country, including the St. Lawrence River out of Waddington, N.Y., July 20-23; Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh, N.Y., July 27-30; Lake St. Clair, Macomb County, Mich., Aug. 24-27; and the season finale Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship on Mille Lacs Lake, Mille Lacs, Minn., Sept. 14-17. “Right now, I’m in a good position, and the next three events we get to fish for smallmouth. They’re the ones I’ve been looking forward to all year long,” Palaniuk said shortly after finishing 12th in the GoPro Bassmaster Elite at Lake Dardanelle presented by Econo Lodge in early June. Two weeks earlier, he had won the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. He has a hot hand. Look at Palaniuk’s record on those fisheries and you can see why he might be excited about competing on them. He won the 2013 Elite on the St. Lawrence River out of Waddington, and he was 19th on the next visit in 2015. He slipped a bit in a Bass Pro Shops Northern on Champlain in 2014, finishing 63rd, but he was second on St. Clair in 2015 and 11th at Mille Lacs last year.

SUMMER FEST ‘17 GUIDE • www.pressrepublican.com
Of course, the Idaho pro will have to gain ground on two other young guns, frontrunner Ott DeFoe, who has a 14-point lead over Palaniuk, and newcomer Jacob Wheeler, who is five points ahead. DeFoe of Tennessee does well on those fisheries, too, finishing third at Waddington in 2013, 12th at Champlain and 14th at Mille Lacs. Wheeler, who won the first two Elite events he competed in, doesn’t have an extensive track record on those fisheries, but he did finish 22nd in the Open on Champlain last year. It will be a fascinating race to watch, esIt will be a fascinating pecially since so many outstanding Elite anrace to watch, glers are bunched near the top: Casey Ashley, the 2015 Classic champion, in fourth; Mark especially since so many Davis, three-time Angler of the Year and for- outstanding Elite anglers mer Classic winner, fifth; and Jason Christie, are bunched near the who’s overdue for an AOY or Classic title, top: Casey Ashley, the sixth. All are within 25 points of DeFoe. Those guys will be at the top of everyone’s 2015 Classic champion, Fantasy Fishing lists the next few months, in fourth; Mark Davis, but what should make fans really excited is three-time Angler of the that the pros will be competing on “Fantasy Year and former Classic Lakes” — Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes of 2017. winner, fifth; and Jason After what Palaniuk calls a “smallmouth Christie, who’s overdue smackfest” at Mille Lacs, the lake was almost for an AOY or Classic a shoo-in to become the No. 1 bass fishery in America. Seth Feider averaged more than 5 title, sixth. All are within pounds per bass — 76 pounds, 5 ounces — 25 points of DeFoe. to win the AOY Championship at Mille Lacs last September. And you don’t have to be a pro to do well, as Editor James Hall and I discovered on a fact-finding mission to the Minnesota lake a couple of years ago. Both of us enjoyed days worthy of posting on Facebook. Only the Top 50 among the Elite Series competitors at the end of the regular season will be able to compete for the $1 million in AOY money at Mille Lacs. But everyone will have the chance to sample other Fantasy Lakes. Lake St. Clair, ranked No. 1 on the annual list in 2014, is ninth nationwide this year, and the Thousand Islands section of the St. Lawrence River, accessible from Waddington, ranks 11th. In between those two on the schedule, Lake Champlain is rated fifth among fisheries in the North region. Now you can see why many of the pros last fall were calling the 2017 Elite season “The Dream Schedule.” That it is.
