THE TEAM The team behind PRESS4TRANSPORT consists of professional journalists, university professors and IT specialists all with a background in sustainable transport topics. PRESS4TRANSPORT Virtual Press Office PRESS4TRANSPORT, funded within the 7th Research Framework Programme, was launched to support national and regional projects in the transport area, by providing a communication service at European level. PRESS4TRANSPORT is a free of charge news editing service designed for the dissemination of national and regional SUSTAINABLE SURFACE TRANSPORT projects results in the European media, through various PRESS channels: newspapers, scientific reviews, blogs, online portals, etc.. PRESS4TRANSPORT main objectives are: • • •

to enhance each projects’ visibility among the media. to get the correct and effective message of sustainable surface transport research across to the relevant stakeholders; to contribute to promoting "safer, greener and smarter" SST systems for the benefit of all Europe.

PRESS4TRANSPORT features a user‐friendly virtual press release tool that performs the entire press release process online (Link to http://www.press4transport.eu/vpo/services.php).


Spotlight on projects: the first projects entering the initiative Visions The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) at Leeds University in collaboration with partners from the Universities of Oxford, Salford, East Anglia and Manchester, is leading VISIONS, a project which seeks to examine ways in which more people might be encouraged to walk and cycle in the future, what steps are needed to support this potential increase in walking and cycling and how to improve the experience for those who already use these modes. For further details… The Motorways of the Sea (MoS) The MoS projects aims to establish a European transport network of high quality shipping links integrated with the land transport corridors. Establishing MoS is complex because of the International scope as well as the involvement of a large number of public and private stakeholders. A PhD dissertation recently submitted at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, has taken as its main research question whether MoS projects can be realised in the present market conditions and if not what conditions are necessary for their success. PRESS4TRANSPORT Next steps: The TRA2010 ‐ Transport Research Arena PRESS4TRANSPORT will participate to the TRA2010, Transport Research Arena , which will take place from Monday 7 till Tuesday 10 June 2010 at the SQUARE Brussels Meeting Centre. This 3rd TRA Conference will be focused on “Sustaining Road Transport Mobility through innovation in Europe” and will cover the different aspects of road transport and research. The major objective of TRA is to bring information to the participants and give emphasis on various topics at three different levels: general interaction at the plenary sessions, specific views on topics and policies during the strategic session and in depth presentation and discussion on specific transport topics within the thematic session. Topics are: • • • • • • • • •

The European Green Cars Initiative; Cooperative Systems; Integrated mobility management; Safer Transport; Intelligent Transport Systems; Logistic and multi‐modal transport; The future of transnational research; ICT for energy efficiency; Mobility challenges for cities.

News Commission launches a one‐stop helpdesk for motorways of the sea The European Commission launched a one‐stop helpdesk on funding possibilities for "motorways of the sea" projects under the Trans‐European Network for Transport (TEN‐T) programme and the Marco Polo programme. It will also point to other relevant national and European Union funding schemes. The "motorways of the sea" initiative is a TEN‐T priority project that aims to promote green, viable, attractive and efficient sea‐based transport links integrated through the entire transport chain. Read more Seven partners from all over Europe established an alliance on international rail traffic. Seven partners from all over Europe established an alliance to render international wagonload traffic by rail more customer friendly and efficient. The alliance aims to increase the competitiveness of wagonload traffic in Europe significantly, thus helping take traffic off the roads and protect the environment. Read more Brussels to set EU clean cars strategy European Commission Vice‐President Antonio Tajani, in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, met with ministers in charge of the automotive industry on 19th February. They discussed the economic challenges facing the European car industry, what short‐term measures could be made available, as well as the medium term strategy ensuring a sustainable recovery from the crisis "A European strategy on Clean and Energy‐Efficient Cars should be developed and implemented that sets out the necessary actions to encourage market introduction of green vehicles, including electric cars," the Commission said in a statement, issued after the informal meeting.
