Follow these step-by-step instructions to plait your pony’s tail ready for a show!
1. Comb your pony’s tail to get rid of knots and tangles
3. Make a plait

6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 with hair on the right side of the tail
2. Take a small section of hair from the centre, left and right at the top of the tail as shown
4. Take a small section of hair from the left of the tail just underneath the plait, join it together with the section of hair from the plait as shown
7. Repeat steps 4 - 6 until around the bottom of the dock then continue to plait WITHOUT taking any more side sections
5. Plait
8. Fold up the plait and fasten securely with an elastic band

Children can learn and practice Crafty Ponies manes and tails are made from cotton so that they are non slip and children can plait them. The tail is sewn onto a dock so that children can practice plaiting tails. Instructions for plaiting manes and tails are at the back of the passport booklet that comes with the pony. Remember to pick up a bag of plaiting bands from your local retailer!

The booklet, written and checked by vets explains how a vet stitches a real pony’s cut leg and the clear diagrams show the equipment used. The set includes a syringe for ‘injecting’ Crafty Pony with sedative/anti tetanus/antibiotics, gauze swabs for cleaning the wound, a needle and thread and scissors to stitch the cut, finally a ‘vet wrap’ bandage for putting over the wound to keep it clean. The history of Crafty Ponies One Christmas In the early 1990’s Karen designed and made a Crafty Pony for each of her three daughters when they were very small. When they got their own ponies a year or two later they knew how all the equipment worked and how to put it on and off, Karen was very happy about this! ‘Playing with their Crafty Ponies taught the children and I only had to supervise them, they could even get straight into plaiting their ’real’ ponies after practicing with their Crafty Ponies at home’ says Karen. In 2002, Darren (Karen’s husband) renovated a farm and built stabling with an arena on the edge of the moors above Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. Local people saw Karen’s daughters riding and asked for lessons, so Karen with help from her teenage daughters opened a riding school. Karen and Darren’s sons helped with mucking out and looking after the horses, ponies and facilities. In 2009 after watching the children (and adults!) struggling to understand how the horses and ponies tack works, Karen designed and made a Crafty Pony craft/sewing kit so that other families could make Crafty Ponies and equipment for their children to play with, learn and practice how it all works. Darren (who is a builder) got involved helping source the buckles, bits, stirrups and organising the printing of the fabric, booklets and packaging. Karen’s daughters helped a lot with the artwork and showing Karen how to use a computer! 2010 Darren and Karen set up Crafty Ponies Ltd and organised a website to sell the craft kits. They attended ‘Your Horse Live’ to see if people liked the kits. People loved the ponies but not everyone liked the idea of making them and kept asking for the ponies and equipment to be ready made. The craft/sewing kits were entered into a toy and hobby competition around this time and acheived ‘Highly commended’ in the Creative Play Awards. In 2013 Karen started looking for manufacturers in the UK to get the ponies made up. Unfortunately Karen could find no manufacturer in the UK and so Darren and Karen travelled to China to source a manufacturer. The trip was successful and a small workshop was found near Beijing, The ready made ponies with red and blue rug sets, tack and a stable box were advertised on the website and people were buying and enjoying the ready made ponies. Then Karen found an on-line printer and started to produce illustrated booklets to be included with the products. The booklets are fun and easy to follow so that children can learn about the product whilst playing with it. In 2015 Crafty Ponies won ‘Creative Play of the Year’ Award in the 7 - 12 years old category. Crafty Ponies have now won several childrens play awards In 2016 Phil from Equifest telephoned Karen and persuaded her to bring the Crafty Ponies to the show. At the show many children loved the ponies and Pat Doran one of the judges at the show encouraged Karen to take Crafty Ponies to the next show, the BSPS Summer Championships. The chidren loved the ponies and the judges also said the product was ‘very good’ and ‘brilliant!’,so Darren and Karen then started selling the ponies at the major horse shows. The children who bought Crafty Ponies started asking for more colours of ponies, more tack and accessories. Diane a local seamstress started making and sewing for Crafty Ponies and now many of the accessories are made in the Pennines, northern England by Diane and her team of outworkers. We source as much product as we can in the UK. Crafty Ponies are now sold all over the world and in equestrian stores and tack shops
