EDITOR’S COMMENT
Fever pitch es, it’s the World Cup. I understand the need to support the nation, as a group of young, overpaid men kick a ball around the pitch, but why can’t some of this enthusiasm find its way into other sports?
Aside from television coverage, the World Cup is surrounded by a fog of commercialism. Football shirts, flags, car flags and those odd horn-like ‘vuvuzelas’ are flying off the shelves, in fact, Sainsbury’s has said that at the peak of the event it was selling one vuvuzela every two seconds! This I may be a rather stereotypical female sort of support would be incredible in when I say that I don’t get the the equestrian world. Just imagine, importance of football, but I find it jackets and saddle cloths could be really astonishing to see the absolute emblazoned with your favourite fervour many people have for this famous rider or horse. You could odd sport, especially at World Cup wave a (quiet, horse friendly) flag out time. I managed to watch eight of your window during the Grand minutes of England’s first game and National, Hickstead or Badminton. that was quite enough, thank you, Cross country colours could be in but if I find any form of equestrian teams, like football shirts, and you sport on the television I can could dress your child in a watch it for hours. I know replica England event I’m not the only one shirt…I’m getting ...there just and for years, all of us carried away now but in the equestrian you get the idea! I isn’t the high level world have understand that of investment in clamoured for more equestrianism has a coverage, but kind of staid and equestrianism somehow it never polite support, but that there is quite materialises, or with over 4 million if it does it’s on some riding a horse each year in football sort of ‘red button’. beloved sport? As always, I think it comes down to money: there just isn’t the high level of investment in equestrianism that there is in football, or motor racing. Perhaps racing has the most, but it doesn’t reach far enough. Investment in equestrianism, both sponsors and the media in particular, would improve the sport’s standing as a whole, and provide a much needed boost to businesses in our sector. Finger’s crossed that 2012 works its magic for everyone, but I guess we will have to wait to find out.
Au revoir This is my final issue of Equestrian Business Monthly and it’s been a ‘helluva’ ride! I took on this great magazine in December 2008, after cutting my teeth as staff writer and I hope I have left my mark. I have most enjoyed seeing the new features spring up – the more controversial the better – and it has been great launching both Trade Talk and the consumer website Let’s Talk Horses. Equestrian Business Monthly definitely moves with the times and it is these recent developments that have most strongly defined us this past couple of years. For me, the Mystery
Shopper feature has been most interesting. The first of its kind in the equestrian trade, this feature has opened up a whole new area of investigation and has unearthed some incredible information. The intention was to provide an unbiased, honest and open view of equestrian retailers, providing some wellmeaning advice to help with improvements. This is the foundation of the feature and will continue to be so. With many more shops to visit, the Mystery Shopper will be on the case for some time yet. It’s been rough recently for all businesses and there was no respite in the equestrian trade. But most businesses have kept their heads afloat and Equestrian Business Monthly has taken the bull by the horns and grown, instead of shrinking away in fear of the demon ‘recession’. Next issue there will be someone else to take on this great challenge and with new blood comes fresh ideas, so be sure to watch this space! The equestrian world is a small place, so you may see me around, but if not, it’s been a blast and I hope you enjoy the magazine’s next chapter. So now I will say goodbye, and thank you all so much for supporting us throughout the past few years. I am sad to leave Equestrian Business Monthly but I know it is in safe hands so you should look forward to new ideas, new features and a new photograph at the top of this page!

News in Brief
A round-up of the UK’s equestrian trade news
F H Nash Ltd buys John Loader (Wessex) Ltd Leading horse feed business, Braintree-based F H Nash Ltd, has bought the John Loader (Wessex) Ltd business from Openfield. F H Nash Ltd says that the business – based at Fordingbridge in Hampshire and which markets a range of leading brands, including Badminton Horse Feeds – ideally complements its current operation and is an important next step in its growth and development programme. Openfield had been searching for the right owner for John Loader (Wessex) Ltd for some time.
It is a business that, in recent years, sat firmly outside its core commercial activity of grain marketing and seed and fertiliser supply. Announcing the sale, Openfield managing director, Tim Davies, says: “I am very pleased to have been able to place John Loader (Wessex) Ltd with a company that is totally committed to the animal feed sector and to investing in its future success.” F H Nash Ltd is the second largest horse feed manufacturer in the UK and manufactures the Baileys Horse Feed brand. It intends
to continue to run the business as a going concern and this was a key factor for the Openfield Board in deciding to accept the offer for the company. F H Nash Ltd managing director, Paul Venner, says: “The Fordingbridge operation marries perfectly with our existing business and enables John Loader
Theft on the rise
Mathew’s display proves a winner
Our very own Mystery Shopper has long been bemoaning the woeful lack of security to be found in many equestrian stores, and now a specialist security company is warning retailers to protect their bottom line and secure their stock. Equestrian trades security specialist B to B Links is warning retailers to watch out for theft, especially of high value items such as tack and clothing. The company says: “Theft levels are continuing to increase and impact the bottom line of retail businesses across the country. The British Retail Consortiums annual Crime Survey that included crime data from independent retailers countrywide, reported a staggering 34% increase of customer theft last year versus 2008, with higher than average losses being noted per incident.” Customer theft is by far the biggest reported problem in terms of number of incidents, with a shocking 94% of all incidents of reported retail crime being attributed to customer theft,
rather than fraud or criminal damage. Clearly, customer theft remains the number one threat in both value and number of incidents facing equestrian retailers in 2010. This problem has long been identified by national security company B to B Links, which is active in
products to be distributed economically alongside our Baileys Horse Feeds and Fancy Feeds brands.” It is very much business as usual for the John Loader and there are no changes planned for the Badminton brands. Manufacturing will continue at the Fordingbridge factory and the only recognisable difference is that Badminton products will be more widely available through the Baileys network.

The team at Wynnstay Stafford are celebrating after winning a retailer display competition launched by natural animal healthcare specialists, Verm-X. The nationwide competition was developed as part of the exciting new look to relaunch the Verm-X range. Retailers were provided with eyecatching point of sale to help with the display and encouraged to use products from the rapidly expanding range. After much deliberation the judges chose the display at the Wynnstay store in Stafford, which was put together by 18-year-old Mathew Best. The prize for the winning display was £500 worth of stock but on hearing Mathew had recently passed his driving test and had developed the promotional area himself, Philip Ghazala of Verm-X also provided Mathew with a £50.00 prize.

survey reveals opportunities for retailers A survey of over 800 horse owners has revealed that whilst the vast majority (86%) are concerned about the development of resistance to wormers, almost all of those who are concerned (99%) are not currently taking any preventative measures. The online survey, conducted with readers of Horse&Rider magazine and sponsored by Merial Animal Health, also found that when it came to carrying out faecal worm egg counts (WECs), whilst only 16% are actually using them, 80% of those not using them said they would consider WECs as part of their worming programme. Eqvalan product manager Claire Edmunds explains the findings: “The survey confirms that a significant number of horse owners are either already using, or would consider using WECs. This represents a significant opportunity for those retailers who offer a WEC service to their customers.” The survey revealed that three quarters prefer to use a combination wormer, it also appears that many
owners are not prepared to compromise when it comes to their horse’s health, “75% also stated that the cost of worming is acceptable in order to maintain the welfare and the health of their horse,” says Claire. “However, there is clearly some room for improvement when it comes to keeping records. Whereas 69% say that they worm between two and five times a year, when asked for their worming interval, 76% stated “six weeks” with the average interval cited at 7.2 weeks, which in reality clearly isn’t the case. Many of those in the survey also said that they would be interested in text alerts, personalised worming programmes and email alerts so there is clearly an opportunity for retailers to get more involved with their customers’ worming programmes, which can only serve to help cement loyalty and buyin to the store,” she adds. Additionally EQVALAN provides a personalised planner and reminder alert facility for equine consumers online at www.smartworming.co.uk
senior changes at Brinicombe
In its 37th year of trading the Denis Brinicombe Group, which includes Brinicombe Equine, has made some changes at board level. From 1st June 2010 James Brinicombe, previously managing director of this family owned company, took on the role of chief executive to the group (CEO). At the same time, group commercial manager Keith Greig, has been promoted to the position of managing director. James says: “Moving to the role of CEO will enable me to concentrate more on the front end of the business and to provide a family face to our customers as well as enabling me to
take time to look at our overall strategy for the future to take the group onto the next level.” Keith Greig says: “I want to thank the Brinicombe family for giving me this opportunity. The remit I have is to implement a successful business strategy for the group that will allow investment and growth opportunities in the future whilst at the same time returning a sustainable annual profit. This change will enable the business to develop further, maintain its core principles and react more quickly to the current economic challenges faced by us all. I look forward to being part of the group’s future.”

TALKING HEADS
Talking Heads: Showjumping Showjumping is a real spectator sport and even non-equestrians can get wrapped up in the passion that surrounds it. With more famous faces than almost any other equestrian field, showjumping is an area of equestrianism full of innovation and celebrity. Tom Eastwood from Tagg and Polly Products, Stephen Biddlecombe from Equine Management Ltd, Margaret Donnelly from Equilibrium and Jane Buchan from Baileys explain the role their companies play in this exciting sport. Tom Eastwood: Tagg Clothing
Q A
What products do you make for the showjumping market?
Tagg Clothing has a range of competition wear under the William Funnell name incorporating a jacket and a range of breeches. New for 2010 is a ladies competition jacket the Fontainebleau and the ladies Adelaide competition breeches and riding shirts. What is unique about show jumping?
Q A
Some of the greatest championships in the show jumping calendar are here in the UK, in particular the Hickstead Derby, the King George and the Queen Elizabeth Cup, and riders come to compete from all over the world to win these coveted titles. How much do you think this sector is worth?
Q A
As we are a sponsor of William Funnell and he has been so successful both as a GB team member and as an individual is major events, to us show jumping has become an important discipline for out clothing range. It is often televised, particularly so in Europe and the bigger shows here in the UK, and with a respected and successful rider promoting the clothing it can only be a winning sector for Tagg Clothing. What made you decide to manufacture showjumping products?
Q
Again our sponsorship of William Funnell; his first Hickstead Derby
A
win in 2006 on Mondriaan moved us to create the range with him in time for his wins in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 he is trying to equal the record of Eddie Macken and Boomerang of four wins on the same horse, which has stood for 25 years. It was also clear that nobody was addressing the market for young men and boy’s show jumping wear and for that reason we start our jacket size at 28inch chest and our breeches at a 28inch waist. What are the specific requirements of showjumping tack and equipment?
Q
. They must be stylish, hard wearing and extremely comfortable. Show jumping is very physical; the rider must be able to move easily without restriction. Our jackets and breeches, tried and tested for a full season by William Funnell, are now also used by the top riders on the UK circuit and abroad.
A
What special features have you included in your products?
Q A
Easy maintenance is the key: the Funnell jacket, which is made from a stretch gabardine and is fully washable, is the epitome of these requirements. The breeches wash and wear from season to season, keep their elasticity and are well made with strong seaming that will take the heavy usage.
10 EQUESTRIAN Business Monthly R July 2010 R www.ebmonthly.co.uk
How do you involve your sponsored riders in the business?
Q A
We sponsor William Funnell and he was involved throughout the design and testing process using both the jacket and breeches for a full season before they were launched in 2008. All his recommendations were followed up and product sales now underline how important the professional rider’s knowledge is to a manufacturer. We also sponsor both Pippa and William Funnell with the Funnell Rug Range. The whole range now on offer from Polly Products was created with their input along with the Funnell Horse Care Range
extended for 2010 and very successful. All the products were tried and tested in both Funnell yards and more new products are in the pipeline that they are now developing with us. Anything else to add about showjumping products?
Q A
Our products are aimed at all riders, whether professional or amateur, and this is reflected in our price point, we have used quality fabrics and good design, but the criteria agreed with William Funnell were that they were also value for money. Showjumping has a huge amateur and grass roots following and everyone riding needs quality clothing to wear.

What products do you make specifically for showjumping?
Q A
What common digestive problems do showjumpers experience?
Q A
Tri-Zone Tendon boots, Vented Tendon boots, Fetlock boots, Fetlock Lite and Over reach boots. What makes them so good for this sport?
Q A
The Tri-Zone Tendon Boot combines innovative design with radical new materials to create high performance jumping boots – offering superb protection, genuine impact absorption and the ability to channel heat and sweat away from the skin. The outer shell of the boot is made from TPU and is moulded to create three protection zones that offer extremely high impact resistance. Created in one piece, the gradient between the zones of the outer shell also acts to actively encourage shock waves to disperse away from the tendon. The inner lining of the boot is made from EVA - a material renowned for its outstanding flexibility and high impact absorption - with a corrugated finish that helps to channel heat and sweat away from the skin. Please describe the research and development that goes into your best showjumping boot?
Q
The Tri-zone Fetlock Lite boot was specifically designed to meet the requirements of the BSJA for its Young Horse Classes. The BSJA approached us to design and develop a light, protective and nonrestrictive fetlock boot, particularly suitable for use on young horses. The BSJA had become increasingly concerned that restrictive fetlock boots were being used on young horses. In an effort to respond to this problem, the BSJA has now ruled that only the Tri-zone Fetlock ‘Lite’ boots, specifically designed to protect without restricting hind leg flexion,
A
can be worn in the Young Horse Classes at the British Young Horse Championships. Top British showjumper, William Funnell, on behalf of the BSJA, said: “We were delighted to work with Equilibrium Products on the development of this fetlock boot for young horses. Equilibrium listened to our requirements, made prototypes for us to test and, with our input, has developed a fetlock boot that is perfect for protecting young legs without causing any restriction. This slimline design means that the boot is very light and easy to use. I would say that it is not only perfect for young horses but for more established horses as well.” How are the boots tested?
Q A
During the design process, all TriZone boots are tested for: Protection – Our boots are tested for their ability to protect against concussive forces which can cause bruising and penetration which can cause cuts to the leg. Heat reduction – Research has shown that when tendon cells are heated to 48°C for 10 minutes approx, 80% of them die. We test our boots to measure how well the boots allow heat to escape in order to reduce the risk of tissue damage. Flexibility – We test our boots to make sure that they do not restrict the horse's movement whilst still exceeding protection requirements. Weight – We design and test our boots to minimise excess weight but without compromising on protection.

Showjumpers need a consistent temperament with the capability of producing short bursts of energy that fuels their fast twitch muscle fibres. They require a good balance of minerals and vitamins, as well as a suitable amount of fibre to reduce digestive upsets and maintain gut motility. Studies have found a high prevalence of Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) in performance horses, and experts agree the problem is a significant equine issue, particularly as it can lead to poor performance. Showjumping horses may be affected because they compete regularly, frequently travel, and are involved in stressful situations such as irregular feeding times and disturbing surroundings. Therefore, most supplements for show jumpers aim to help support digestion, reduce stress and excitability, and also treat or prevent EGUS. How can supplements help reduce digestive problems?
Q A
Owners are usually advised to feed show jumpers high fat diets, to reduce the excitability and high levels of lactic acid that can be signs of a high starch diet, but some owners may still be feeding too much starch. It is also important to note that stress in the horse can lead to diarrhoea on show days, and even more serious digestive issues such as colic. So, the first step to take in order to reduce digestive problems is to feed a diet that suits the horse’s workload, temperament and metabolic needs, and also manage the horse’s environment, to reduce stress.
We would recommend a new product called Grand Digest to retailers looking to sell a top quality, holistic digestive aid. It is the only feed supplement to manage all three stages of digestion – it detoxes the stomach by neutralising mycotoxins, improves absorption in the small intestine with a multi-enzyme blend, and boosts immunity by supporting the large intestine. It is especially ideal for horses prone to diarrhoea or colic. In the horse, the gastrointestinal system is the first system to show signs of emotional and physical stress, so a healthy digestive system is key. Do you target your supplements to very specific markets?
Q A
Grand Meadows products are based on scientific research, clinical trials and field-testing, and are designed for all equines. Although, while specific show jumpers have not been involved in product development, because of the products’ high potency and professional formulations, many leading riders in all disciplines choose to use the range, such as Belgian show jumper Philippe Lejeune.
TALKING HEADS
Jane Buchan: Baileys
Rider Profile Baileys Horse Feeds sponsored rider Graham Lovegrove competes at the top level of showjumping and dreams of riding at the Olympics. With five horses at the moment, Graham is busy travelling to compete at some of the most prestigious shows around the globe.
What are the usual dietary requirements of a showjumper?
Q A
Basically, showjumpers have similar dietary requirements to any performance horse. That said, the nature of their discipline requires that showjumpers produce short bursts of power for their jumping rounds rather than having the stamina required for cross country or dressage. They can carry more condition than a threeday-fit Thoroughbred eventer, for example, whilst the larger framed horses may take some feeding to keep furnished. All horses need feeding as individuals, with good quality forage as the basis to their diets supplemented with the correct amount of an appropriate compound feed to provide a fully balanced diet. Whilst quality protein and supporting nutrients are essential whatever the horse, energy sources can be chosen to complement a horse’s natural temperament and requirements. ‘Fizzy’ types and those requiring stamina are better suited to slow release energy sources, like fibre and oil, whilst the more laid back types can benefit from the quick release energy provided by cereals, including oats. Which feeds are most suitable?
Q A
Feeds formulated for performance not only have a higher Digestible Energy content (DE measured in MJ/kg) but also have the elevated levels of all other essential nutrients necessary to meet the increased requirements of a horse in moderate to hard work. For this reason, if a ‘competition’ feed is deemed ‘too much’, the diet must be topped up with a feed balancer to maintain nutrient levels even though energy intake is being controlled. From the Baileys range, we’d recommend AllRound
Competition Mix (with oats), AllRound Endurance Mix (high fibre, high oil) as well as Top Line Conditioning Mix and Cubes, all of which supply calorie and nutrient levels to support work to the highest level. Lo-Cal balancer is useful to top up the diet where reduced quantities of mix or cube are fed or when a lower spec feed, like a cool mix, is preferred to provide lower energy levels. Which showjumpers do you sponsor and do they help with trialling or product development?
Q
Baileys has supported Jackson Reed-Stephenson since he was on ponies. He is now a respected producer or young horses as is Andrew Davies who is based in Wales. The company also sponsors Graham Lovegrove, who lives just a few miles from the Head Office and pony rider, Jessica Mendoza. Whilst they may not specifically have participated in product development, we always value their feedback and our nutrition team are in touch regularly to ensure they are getting the most from our feeds and the horses are looking and performing as they should.
A
How long have you been showjumping?
Q A
. I rode and jumped ponies as a child and, when I moved on to horses, had a couple that jumped up to 1.30m but I gave up at the age of 22. It was my sister then who persuaded me to take up the sport professionally when I was 30 and I haven’t looked back! What is your greatest achievement?
Q A
I’ve won some good Grand Prix and I’m pleased to have had the sort of success that keeps me going in the sport but I hope I’m still working towards my greatest achievement! I’d love to represent my country at the Olympics or World Equestrian Games; I’ve jumped in a few Nations Cup teams so I’ve had a taste! How many horses do you ride/own?
Q A
I’ve got just the five horses at the moment most of whom are owned by me or my sister, Sarah, or her company Connectix. They range from my 1.30m speed horse to the two Grand Prix horses, Pandur and Tin Tin. I have one brilliant full time groom, Eva, who travels with me and the horses, and a working pupil, Nathan, who has his own couple of horses. How has showjumping changed in recent years?
Q A
Courses are changing all the time but they have definitely become more technical and, one way or another, the poles seem to fall more easily! It’s definitely more
14 EQUESTRIAN Business Monthly R July 2010 R www.ebmonthly.co.uk
a ‘blood horse’ sport these days than one for the old ‘Irish type’; they have to be quick-witted and agile and really want to jump the fences. I travel abroad a lot to jump too and, while it’s great to ‘cut your teeth’ in this country, you’ll always find the bigger tracks on the Continent and the horses have to learn to deal with bigger crowds and much more atmosphere. Please describe you top horse’s diet and explain why this suits him so well.
Q
. Pandur 292, AKA‘Andy’, is fairly laid back so I like him to have the oat-based All-Round Competition Mix to give him a bit of sparkle. Caroline Murray from Baileys looks after our horses’ feeding programmes and, as part of that, has our forage analysed every year. The haylage we’re feeding at the moment is pretty good and because Andy is also a relatively good-doer he doesn’t need the full recommended amount of mix. We therefore top up his diet with LoCal balancer; for example, he may get just 6lb of mix topped up with 1 1/2lb of balancer or, when working a bit harder or away at competitions, 9lb of mix plus 1lb of balancer. This way he gets sufficient energy to fuel his work, without putting on weight, plus all the other nutrients he needs to support performance, muscle tone, tissue repair and recovery. I always take my own feed with me when I travel and I’m religious about making sure the horses get electrolytes when they’ve sweated, whether that’s in work or on the lorry.

SPECIAL REPORT
THOROUGHBRED GUIDANCE FOR HORSEBOX DRIVERS Simply by hitching a trailer to your horsebox you could also be binding yourself to a new set of legal obligations and rules. Sally Thornley of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) explains how equine transportation is affected by road transport law and how drivers can keep themselves safe and on the right side of it. One of the reasons that the UK’s fleet of commercial vehicles is considered the safest in Europe is that drivers and operators must comply with Operator Licensing (O-licensing) requirements and drivers’ hours rules. However, for many horsebox owners they will not realise that their vehicle and trailer combination may be of a size that brings it under special regulations relating to these rules. Of course, when choosing and using these vehicles it is important for equine transporters to understand how road transport law applies to them and what the rules entail, which is why the FTA has produced a guide for anyone involved in the transportation of horses by road. Owners of ‘The safe transport of horses by road’ will be in good company; Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, famously a keen equestrian and supporter of equine welfare herself, was presented with the colour, 15page guide when she opened an FTA office earlier in the year. FTA is now making the guide available to everyone involved in the transportation of horses so that they can ensure their operation is both safe and legal.
Knowing your limits O-licensing regulates road transport, setting minimum standards for operators and
controlling where vehicles are parked when not in use. Obviously, nobody wants to get a fine or see their vehicle impounded and destroyed, so the first question that horsebox owners need to answer is: ‘How does the law apply to me?’ To answer this, one needs to understand the weight thresholds in question. The weight threshold for goods vehicle O-licensing depends on what type of vehicle or combination is being used. All large vehicles (i.e. over 3,500kg gross weight) that carry horses or associated equipment in connection with a trade or business on public roads fall under this scope, this includes short-term rental vehicles hired for as little as one day. Whether transporting horses for other people, operating as part of an organised undertaking or being sponsored by a commercial undertaking in any way, the same rules apply. The licence must be held by the person – whether an individual or an organisation – who ‘uses’ the vehicle and this may or may not be the owner of the vehicle. In law, the ‘user’ of the vehicle is either the driver, if they own or are leasing, buying on hire-purchase terms, hiring or borrowing the vehicle; or in the case of an employed driver, the person whose servant or agent the driver is – i.e. whoever employs or controls the driver. There are, however, some exemptions from the need to
hold an O-licence for various specialised operations, a few of which may apply to those transporting horses. If in doubt then horsebox operators should consider joining a transport trade association that can help them meet the requirements of their O-licence and guide them through the application process.
Time for a rest? All goods vehicles have the potential to come under the scope of drivers’ hours and working time rules, the aim of which is to protect both drivers and the public from the serious implications of fatigue. Penalties for driving a vehicle in breach of the rules, or when unfit through fatigue, can range from fixed penalty fines to imprisonment, if a driver is found guilty of manslaughter or causing death by dangerous driving. Yard owners or other managers of tired drivers may also face prosecution. There are two sets of drivers’ hours rules in the UK, commonly known as the domestic rules and the EU rules. Confusingly, they both apply to vehicles that can be driven entirely in the UK, their names being derived from the regulations’ places of origin. FTA’s guide summarises the key features of each set of rules arming horsebox owners with the knowledge they need to stay compliant.
Trailblazing towards safer roads Another area of legislation to watch out for comprises the rules and regulations surrounding the towing of trailers, which can be complicated. However, they are designed with one simple objective – the safety of the driver and other road users. As the driver or operator of a vehicle combination, you could be fined, have your licence endorsed or even go to prison if you use a dangerous vehicle or trailer.
Important points to watch out for are the compatibility of the vehicle and trailer, the trailer couplings and the actual driving of the vehicle combination. Driving a vehicle with a trailer attached requires a great deal more care and skill than driving solo. There are, of course, many more road traffic rules to follow. Not least of which is speed limits, which can be applied differently to goods vehicles rather than, say, private cars. Indeed, some large vehicles are required to be fitted with speed limiters set to 56mph or 60mph, depending on the age and size of the vehicle. These and other important laws and rules, including guidance on the European regulation for the protection of animals during transport, are detailed in FTA’s guide, which it is hoped will give horsebox owners and drivers the confidence and information they need to keep themselves and their passengers safe and sound. Subjects covered in ‘The safe transport of horses by road’, include: • Driving licences • Operator licensing • Towing trailers • Road traffic rules • Animal welfare in transit It is available at £5.00 a copy plus postage (no VAT) from Shopfta on +44 (0)8717 11 11 11 or email sales@fta.co.uk
European legislation requiring a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification, in addition to a driving licence, applies to drivers of large vehicles in licence categories C, C1, C+E or C1+E. Further information on the Driver CPC can be found on the FTA website at www.fta.co.uk

FIRST AID
BE PREPARED From everyday cuts and scrapes to full on emergencies, the trick to handling any equine first aid situation is to be prepared. Retailers play an important role in this by providing first aid kits for horse owners but veterinary surgeons clearly play the most important part of all. Whether you’re dispensing advice or selling bandages, helping the horse owner respond quickly and appropriately to an emergency is the key. A simple first-aid kit or two, stored safely at the yard and in the horsebox, is a necessity for every horse owner. A few essential items kept in a clean, dry box, can save a lot of panic if an
equine emergency occurs and the box itself can be easily labelled with its contents as well as emergency contact numbers. When items are used or beyond their best before date, they must always be replaced, to ensure everything is on hand when it is required.
First response The aim of first aid is to take immediate action when an injury is discovered, to prevent the condition getting worse while awaiting veterinary assistance. The horse must first be contained and controlled to prevent further injury occurring, then the injury must be assessed. The horse owner is the best person to make the decision as to what treatment is required, but yard owners and grooms must also be fully prepared to take control. First aid procedures must be clearly laid out in the yard policy so that every owner is aware of the rules. Yard managers must not be worrying about the potential cost of veterinary care so owners must agree to trust the judgement of the manager and cover the costs involved if a veterinary call out is required. Transparency in rules and comprehensive contact details will limit disputes and ensure the horse is the main priority in case of an emergency. If in doubt, every primary carer must call the vet as what initially looks like a small injury could become life threatening for the horse. A call to the veterinary surgeon might not
16 EQUESTRIAN Business Monthly R July 2010 R www.ebmonthly.co.uk
necessarily result in a visit as in some instances advice can be given over the telephone.
Information boards One of the sections in the Mystery Shopper’s criteria covers information boards. These are an important part of many equestrian stores as they not only provide a way to display show schedules and horses for sale, but also provide important information on local veterinary surgeons and farriers. Make sure your board is up to date so that any new customers, especially people that have just moved to the area, can find out all the important information they may need.
Vital signs Every horse owner must have a suitable thermometer as monitoring the horse’s temperature is an important step in keeping the veterinary surgeon informed. The horse’s normal temperature is 38°C, though this may vary by half a degree either way. The temperature is taken using an equine thermometer (modern digital versions are preferable to mercurybased ones). Care must be taken when performing this procedure – ideally, the horse should be
held by an assistant. The technique, once practiced, is not difficult: after being lubricated, the thermometer should be partially inserted into the horse’s rectum and tilted slightly so that it rests against the rectal wall. It should be held in place for a full minute before being removed. The pulse rate of a horse at rest is 3040 heartbeats per minute. This rate increases normally with exercise and excitement, but can also increase when the horse has a fever or is in acute pain. Likewise, the horse’s normal breathing rate can also alter or appear laboured, indicating possible ill-health or distress. The pulse can be taken at the point where the facial artery passes under the lower jaw. Once the artery has been located, light pressure should be applied, using the flat of two or three fingers. The number of pulses over a period of 15 seconds should be counted, and then this number multiplied by four to obtain the pulse rate. If the horse shows signs of a fever or appears to be in pain, a veterinary surgeon should be consulted.
Infection protection First aid is not just about bleeding wounds and strained tendons, infectious diseases also require swift and immediate
FIRST AID
FIRST AID attention. Strangles is one of the most common infectious diseases and an outbreak requires full isolation as it can spread very easily. Every yard should have an isolation procedure and ideally an isolation area, although this is difficult to achieve. Full isolation of an infected horse involves using separate grooming equipment, mucking out tools, feed and water buckets and anything else that could carry infection. With a rise in the threat of Equine Infectious Anaemia and African Horse Sickness potentially reaching the UK, quarantine procedures may need to be stepped up.
New products First aid and injury management is a growing sector, and as technology advances for humans, in many cases it can also be applied to equine products. Before Robinson Animal Healthcare launches a new product, research, development and testing will have taken months, possibly even years. This is not only for safety reasons, but also to ensure any product reaches the same high standards as the other products in the range. The company explains: “Our research is extensive before a new product is launched. Our primary research includes interviewing and sending out questionnaires to a wide variety of horse owners and equine professionals, we also like to send out trial product where possible.” Secondary research will see the product starting to take shape as the finer details are planned and some products will require a Veterinary Medicine License. Robinson Animal Healthcare explains: “This license is
very important as the formulation and manufacture need to be strictly controlled if the product has a pharmaceutical effect on the horse. Products having such an effect but not having a license are illegal, not to mention potentially dangerous for horses. The control is rather like the control of drugs for people. Animalintex by Robinson Animal Healthcare is a very well known and trusted product which is licensed and has a reputation for being highly effective.”
Product focus Animalintex is Robinson Animal Healthcare’s leading animal health product, both in terms of volume and value; tens of thousands are sold every year around the globe. It is, and has long been, the market leading all purpose veterinary poultice and dressing. Animalintex first appeared in the mid 1930s and it was first licensed in 1970, when such products needed to be licensed as a result of The Medicines Act 1968. The product has been refined over the last 40 years to keep it at the forefront of high quality treatment, but in essence is largely the same product that was first introduced nearly 80 years ago – a testimony to the high quality and forward-thinking product it has proven to be.
How much is the first aid sector worth? Robinson Animal Healthcare explains: “It would be hard to place a value on the equine first aid market but the retail first aid market size is c£112m, of which c£5m is first aid kits. 48% of population own a kit of some sort, but only 8% own a full first aid kit (Mintel, 2006).
What’s new? Over the past 20 years research in equine health has seen some significant developments which have made a real difference to the way in which illnesses and injuries are diagnosed and treated. Health products developed to treat specific problems are becoming more common making treatment much more effective. For example, Robinson Animal Healthcare’s Activate, a sterile multilayered carbon dressing which actively absorbs bacteria, was launched on to the market after studies conducted at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Veterinary Science found that the use of activated carbon dressing treatment saw a dramatic improvement in wound condition. Although field boots and gaiters are
not brand new, these products are now being used in for first aid in the role of wound protection. Daily management of wounds can be time consuming and difficult, consisting of a constant battle to keep the wounds clean and protected. Gauze, gamgee and bandages are just the first line of defence and provide the initial protection, but bandages can quickly become damaged and wet if the horse is turned out. Even if stabled, bedding and other material can stick to wounds and bandaged areas, potentially allowing dirt to enter. In these cases, try recommending field turnout boots or galoshes. Close fitting wraps can provide protection for minor wounds and scrapes, encouraging healing and potentially preventing further injuries. Golly Galoshes provide all round leg protection when applied over bandages. Tough, hardwearing and waterproof, this ingenious product is easy to apply over a bandaged leg and stays put when the horse is out. When turnout is advantageous to healing, for instance to prevent joint stiffening or to keep the horse calm, protection is a good idea, to keep the wound and the bandage clean.
New neem Neem oil has been used for horses for years and is not in itself a new ingredient. However, there are now more and more products springing up containing this natural antibacterial ingredient. The neem tree is one of the most researched plants in the world and it has many applications, from soil fertiliser, to insect repellent, to antiseptic. As an ingredient in wound sprays and creams, it is particularly effective as it encourages the skin to heal at the same time as repelling insects.

BETTER BUSINESS
SELLING ACROSS
MULTIPLE CHANNELS Chris Barling, CEO of ecommerce and EPOS supplier Actinic, provides some tips for a successful multi-channel retail strategy. One of the significant changes in retail recently has been the spread of socalled 'multi-channel' shopping. In the past, a purchase would usually take place through a single channel, either in a shop, or perhaps via a mail order catalogue. Today, consumers regularly use multiple approaches to their purchases. For example, shoppers may research online before buying in-store, or browse a printed catalogue, call for advice and then order later from the website. These tips are designed to help you plan and operate a successful multichannel strategy. They only scratch the surface of the subject, but should help you identify most of the key issues.
Customer first The heart of a multi-channel strategy is to allow the customer to interact with you as they choose. Systems, processes and staff training should be implemented with customer choice as the central theme.
Multi-channel is more profitable Research says that customers using multiple channels actually spend more than ones that buy in a more traditional way, so it’s worth treating them well. Having multiple channels should help you to attract these customers, so make sure that your marketing highlights your capabilities. Customers who stick with you when they cross over channels are showing significant loyalty. It’s important to reciprocate.
Provide a seamless experience Ensure that everyone is motivated to support customers buying through the channel that they want. Reward loyalty equally. Discount coupons and gift vouchers, if used, should be accepted across all channels and if they buy first through one channel, they may want to re-order or return via another – can your systems recognise them across channels?
Get pricing right Try to encourage people to order through the channel with lowest overheads (usually the website). You may need to do this through free offers on shipping or the use of discount codes. Be careful about differential channel pricing as this can often lead to confrontations with customers about price.
Offer a consistent product range Have the same range online as you have in your shop, or a wider selection if anything. Buyers will approach your site with their expectations set by what they have experienced in your shop. If the item they expect is not available online, they will be disappointed. By the next time they shop they will have found someone else with a wider range.
Capture every possible order Use multiple channels to answer “yes” to the question “Have you got …?”. If it’s out of stock when someone visits your shop, it can be ordered for home delivery or you can call/email the customer when it’s in. Or maybe they can pick up in-store if you can’t deliver in time from your web store.
Marketing Remember that web and mail order marketing require a different set of skills and practices to those for a bricks and mortar shop, so make sure that you understand them, or talk to someone who does. You need to take advantage of the possibilities that each channel presents: email is immediate and cheap, but paper can stay visible longer. For instance, Robinsons regularly (but not too frequently) emails its customers with offers to clear old lines and alert them about new products – both driving traffic to the site. It limits the more costly production and posting of a print catalogue to twice a year, but I bet many people keep it for reference.
Respond quickly With the web, shopping is impersonal so it’s more important to support the new channel properly, e.g. answer emails quickly. It’s now beyond a joke the number of surveys that have found that a large proportion of emails are never answered. If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that failure to provide a quality service will alienate your customers, damaging your brand.
Integrate your back-office appropriately Integration of systems can be horrendously expensive, unless your whole operation is based on a package that already provides integration. There are fundamentally two approaches – create the new channel, make sure everything can run smoothly with a manual integration, then integrate the systems once it can be seen that the demand is there. The second is to integrate fully from day one. Both have perils. If initial demand is high the first approach can be difficult, and if someone has ‘forgotten’ to budget the subsequent integration, a lot of fur can fly. With the second approach, it can take so much time and funding to get a complex integration working that enthusiasm and budget is drained before any business is transacted. Ask successful multi-channel businesses for their experiences.
Finally, one last thought. Multichannel retailing is a new discipline, and everyone is still learning. This provides an opportunity to not only steal a march on the competition, but also to enjoy the experience of pioneering in a new field.

Hot totrot Farriery is one of few old fashioned trades that is still thriving today and provides an important service for every horse owner. In depth training and wellestablished apprenticeship schemes ensure that UK farriers are some of the best in the world, so Claire Brown, founder of Farriers Pages, explains the importance of Continuing at farriers obtain th d e d n e m m Professional It is reco ver a year averaged o a ts Development in o p D P C 0 1 d. for the farriery three year perio trade and Equestrian Pursuing excellence Well-rounded skills Business “Pursuing Excellence in Farriery” is the CPD Points are awarded for a number Monthly investigates a phrase coined by the farriery CPD of endeavours to encourage farriers to range of hoof care Steering Group (CPDSG) which consists participate in a wide range of activities of representatives from the Worshipful ensuring an individual is ‘well-rounded’ products. Company of Farriers, the National in all aspects of their professional life. Farriery, alongside medical and veterinary science, is constantly moving forward in knowledge, technique and skill. To reflect this many farriers have furthered their education to keep up to date with these developments through organising and attending clinics and conferences. In turn this has provided them with the advanced skill to deal with conditions of the hoof effectively and employ therapeutic methods as necessary. This conscious development of professional competence and knowledge within an individual’s chosen career is known as Continuing Professional Development (CPD). It recognises the individual is continuously seeking to improve and keep their knowledge up to date and ensures that the standards required to have gained their professional qualification are, at the very least, maintained. Introduced into the veterinary profession in 1997, formally recognised CPD was introduced to the farriery industry in 2008.
Association of Farriers Blacksmiths and Agricultural Engineers, the Farriers Registration Council and the Farriery Training Agency. The CPDSG has been established to ensure that CPD is provided to suit the needs of the farrier and the farriery profession and reports from the CPD office suggest that the response has so far has been extremely positive. CPD is being taken up by many professions, particularly those that are regulated by law, such as dentists, doctors and teachers, for which it is mandatory. Vets have a professional obligation to participate in 105 hours of CPD over three years, with an average of 35 hours per year. CPD for farriers is not compulsory under the Farriers Registration Act 1975 and to make it so would require a change in the law. It is, however, recommended that farriers obtain 10 CPD points a year averaged over a three year period. Farriers are provided with a certificate annually showing the CPD completed in the past year, and the points awarded over the past three years.
30 EQUESTRIAN Business Monthly R July 2010 R www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Examples of such events include shoemaking courses and competitions, conferences, clinics, health and safety, first aid and computer competence in addition to reading books and subscriptions to periodicals, attending business courses and giving presentations to Pony Clubs and Riding Clubs. Perhaps the ultimate CPD is the study for and acquisition of higher farrier qualifications such as the Associate and Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. Organisers of CPD events can apply to the CPDSG to have their event accredited and the booking and recording of CPD activity can be done online through the CPD website at www.farrierycpd.org. Although rapidly increasing in number, the current provision of CPD events is such that it does not allow for every farrier in the UK to acquire 10 points a year. Many organised CPD events are centrally located for national attendance and there is currently a push to introduce more events at a ‘local’ level to lift geographical restrictions. This has already begun with
branches of the National Association and other local groups such as the Yorkshire Farriers Education and Demonstration Association becoming more proactive. Factors such as time taken off work and the cost of attending such events are also issues to be examined.
The introduction of any new concept is not without its teething problems however active participation in CPD will ultimately result in better looked after clients; human and horse. Carers of equines have a right to expect that a farrier’s knowledge is kept up to date and that the standards gained at graduation have at least been maintained. Whilst not exclusive, the accrual of CPD points goes some way to formally recognise this. Farriers actively advancing their expertise will ultimately be better equipped to deal with a more diverse range of ailments, and business scenarios, and perhaps even give them the competitive edge!
Farriers Pages provides a useful online directory of farriers and is a great resource for those in the trade as well as horse owners looking for local farriers. Find out more at www.farrierspages.com
Modern marvels Farriery may be an age old trade, but farriers are not old fashioned and the hoof care market is evolving at quite a pace, to match the ever increasing skills of farriers. As farriers establish a new method or technique, products are developed to help, with tools and skills increasing side by side. New hoof applications are launching all the time, featuring a variety of active ingredients to maintain a healthy hoof environment. Whether solid tubs or liquid bottles, the emphasis is squarely on moisturisation when it comes to hooves and although some products produce an attractive show ring shine, this now seems to be taking a back seat. Hooves, like skin, need to be able to breathe so manufacturers are focusing on balancing the health of the hoof, to improve the overall condition. With so many to stock, it can be a tough decision to make, but retailers can be assured that hoof applications are becoming an important part of many horse owners’ everyday grooming kit,

boosting sales like never before. With so many hoof problems, from splits and cracks to crumbling walls, horse owners are always looking for that miracle cure. As with most areas of the horse world, great horse health comes from a combination of professional care, good daily management and quality products. Customers should always be advised to employ the services of a good farrier regularly, as no matter what gets painted on hooves, poorly
maintained feet that rarely see a farrier will never do well.
Supplement solutions From complete feeds to pelleted supplements, there is an abundance of hoof products to feed. Containing the usual suspects of biotin, methionine, iodine and zinc, these dietary supplements can play an important part in hoof health. With the correct diet, the horse has a better chance of healthy hooves,
32 EQUESTRIAN Business Monthly R July 2010 R www.ebmonthly.co.uk
however, as with applications, there is no magic cure for poor conformation and bad hooves, so customers should adopt a multitiered approach to hoof care.
Although metal shoes are still the footwear of choice for the average horse, an increasing number of alternatives are springing up to cater for horses with difficult feet or requiring a more natural approach. Giltspur Scientific’s HorseSlips have been around for a few years but are a good idea for horses at rest or convalescing. Simple to cut to fit and apply by farriers, these extruded plastic shoes offer just enough protection to the hoof for resting horses that get easily footsore. Hoof boots are also not a new idea but are becoming more and more popular. A sort of ‘trainer for horses’ there are a number of makes available and they offer a practical and cost effective alternative to shoeing. As the popularity of natural horsemanship grows, hoof boots enjoy a boom alongside, thanks to their suitability for the barefoot lifestyle. If you already stock ‘carrot sticks’ natural halters and DVDs then try adding a range of hoof boots alongside, as the market will undoubtedly be very similar.
Necessity is the mother of invention Desperation took over in December 2008 when Muriel Colquhoun’s short coupled, over active horse with a big movement, pulled his front shoes off for the umpteenth time. A solution, if it could not be found, would have to be invented. It was clear from Muriel’s market research that 96%, of those that responded, had similar problems with their own horses losing shoes, and that 91% would be interested in a solution to this age-old problem. An idea for a device that would save time, money, frustration, and stop damage to the horse’s hooves gained a lot of support and wishes of good luck The resulting product, ShoeSecure, is designed to protect the heels of the horse’s front shoes from being struck by its hind feet. Like many good ideas, the product is so simple but very effective; an innovation in horseshoe loss prevention, tested over the past eight months by extreme horses in extreme field conditions with great success. The science of farriery has advanced immensely, the need for a wellbalanced foot with the heels of the horse fully supported by the heels of the horseshoe is vitally important for the ongoing soundness of the horse. “Using Shoe Secure allows the farrier to maintain the normal balance of the hoof, providing appropriate support to the back of the foot without fear of the shoe being pulled off. This in turn helps promote a healthy conformation to the heels, helping protect against concussive injuries and palmar foot pain,” explains David Varini AWCF.

Keratex Hoof Moisturiser

Hoof Disinfectant
Keratex Hoof Moisturiser is recommended by vets and farriers to condition and protect dry, brittle summer hooves. Keratex Hoof Moisturiser works by finding the correct moisture level within the hooves and maintaining this level at all times, preventing excess evaporation of moisture through the hoof walls and therefore protecting the hooves from ‘drying out’. It will also leave hoof walls looking smooth and sleek and will improve hoof quality through moisture stability. Sizes: 500ml and 1 litre.
Kevin Bacon’s Hoof Dressing is formulated to apply moisture in dry conditions and protect the hooves from becoming saturated in wet conditions. Maintaining consistent hoof moisture content will help to keep feet supple and elastic, assisting in the prevention of splits and cracks. Added laurel helps keep the hoof free from bacteria in turn promoting healthy horn growth. Available as a solid and a liquid.
The combination of proper nutrition with Farrier’s Formula Double Concentrate and the application of an effective penetrating disinfectant provides healthy hoof growth from the inside and destruction of deep seated hoof eating microbes from the outside. Life Data Hoof Disinfectant is a safe and effective topical disinfectant that penetrates deep within the hoof wall to kill these microbes at the very foundation of the invasion.

Getting tough on crime The apathy and attitude to theft is very like global warming. The general feeling is ‘it’s going to happen but it won’t affect me so I probably don’t need to do anything about it’. The market facts are a wakeup call. In the two months of November and December 2009 alone, 41 saddles were reported stolen from Chorleywood and Bradford totalling thousands of pounds. Only last month top dressage rider Amy Stovold had 10 saddles stolen from her yard including five of her own. In 2004, 5400 saddles were stolen and in 2006 500 horses were stolen. Whilst actual statistics are difficult to pin down, trends indicate these are estimated to have increased by 50% over the last four years. Whilst equestrian businesses and owners insure their valuable possessions, in the event that these are stolen, in some circumstances insurers are unable to cover the loss. As well as year on year increases in claims, insurances companies are facing high levels of claim fraud relentlessly pushing up the costs of insurance.
NECD National Equestrian Crime Database was born out of a need to approach equestrian crime in a radically new way. Pioneered and funded by an experienced team of business and equestrian experts, NECD is the most technically advanced and strategically empowered equestrian crime prevention organisation in the UK, with a sole purpose to track all valuable equestrian items nationally, at all times. As we begin to roll out the service to the UK market in readiness for full launch in September, it is attracting the attention of other industries such as agriculture. A central part of the new NECD service includes logging and tracking saddles in a unique and market leading way. Very soon NECD customers will be flooding into your shops and asking for their saddles to be stamped with their NECD tracking number. NECD is building a network of equestrian business partners who will be able to stamp these saddles for a fixed customer fee providing a new business revenue stream and the added advantage of increased footfall and customer sales opportunities Retailers across the UK should sign up in readiness for high demand this summer, culminating in the official launch celebrations in September. Recognising the database’s real applications, recent theft victim Amy Stovold has now been appointed as NECD’s first ambassador.
Get involved Together with the tack marking revenue stream, all UK equestrian retailers can gain £10.00 revenue for each new member that they promote the NECD service to. Retailers who sign up as a partner to NECD on line at www.necd.org.uk/partners are given a promotional code which allocates the new revenue streams. Being part of a ground breaking new approach to equestrian crime is a powerful message and all retailers need to do is mention or promote the NECD service through their marketing channels, marketing activities or NECD point of sale fliers. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: 8/10 Good signage and ample parking. Exterior was clean with large display of jumps outside.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: 7/10 Good parking, shared with other businesses including a garden centre. A clear sign from the road.
STEP INSIDE: 5/10 A few stock boxes around which made the shop look a little muddled. Counter by the door, but no staff to be seen for at least 3 minutes – I could have taken a lot in that time!
STEP INSIDE: 6/10 Entrance was through the garden centre. First impressions were of a muddled store, trying to cram in as much stock as possible!
DISPLAY AND LAYOUT: Products well labelled and displayed.
8/10
CLEANLINESS: Clean and fresh looking shop. Stock was clean.
8/10
PRODUCT RANGE: 7/10 A good range of items and both new and used saddles for sale. No feed – but available at feed merchants next door. CUSTOMER SERVICE: 5/10 The assistant could have taken more interest in me – she was serving someone else and I could easily have not waited (I had already waited initially for 3 minutes for anyone to appear). If I’d been short of time, I would have left! STAFF KNOWLEDGE: 7/10 They did not sell wormers as no SQP – due to the expense of the course. The store next door (an animal feed merchant) did sell wormers, and I was directed there – a good collaboration between traders.
DISPLAY AND LAYOUT: 4/10 I couldn’t walk round half of the shop, as it was covered with feed bags! Impossible to browse there at all. CLEANLINESS: 6/10 The shop was clean, but the feed bags on the floor and piles of stock in a little shop made it all look a bit ragged. PRODUCT RANGE: 6/10 A good range of items, but not easy to find! A large area of stock upstairs, which would give me access and security concerns. CUSTOMER SERVICE: 6/10 The assistant was really friendly and chatty. She engaged with me as soon as I walked in. Very pleasant – but didn’t really try to sell me anything or guide me to products. STAFF KNOWLEDGE: They sold wormers and the assistant was a SQP.
8/10
INFORMATION: 7/10 Free magazines, show schedules and a notice board were all visible.
INFORMATION: 7/10 Schedules and magazines available, but didn’t see many information leaflets
ADD-ON SALES: 3/10 No – the only thing the assistant pointed me to were free magazines
ADD-ON SALES: 7/10 Suggested alternative items, but did not try and follow it through to a sale
AFTER SALES: 7/10 Signs offering rug repairs, tack repairs and an embroidery service. Normal statutory rights apply
AFTER SALES: 7/10 Saddle fitting advertised, and also hats could be fitted. They also had an embroidery service. Normal statutory rights apply
Overall a good clean shop. It was smaller inside than I expected, but with the feed merchants next door, they were able to stock most things for horse and rider. They need to watch their security – left unattended for 3 minutes is a big security risk!!

Lots of stock here, but looked really muddled as there appeared to be too much stock in such a small shop. The feed bags displayed on the floor were blocking access to nearly 50% of the stock – a health and safety nightmare if customers attempted to climb over the bags to get to things!

COMPANY PROFILE
FYNA-LITE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS Fyna-Lite is celebrating 25 years of being at the forefront of innovatively designed, British made stable tools and field maintenance equipment. Leon Fynn, general manager of Fyna-Lite explains how the family company started by his father in 1985 has grown into the large-scale manufacturer it is today. Family affair Fyna-Lite started manufacturing forks in 1985 as a reaction to the mucking out products that were available at that time. George Fynn realised that there was a lack of quality tools available, so he designed his own shavings fork. From then on, the company has grown significantly with a range of over 50 different products. There has always been a strong interest in horses from the all members of the Fynn family, and this has certainly helped with the development of the business. We
designed forks so that they could work in our own stables; if they didn’t work well in our yard, then that particular design or idea was discarded. Our aim was to create a fork that was light in weight, yet strong and with good balance to make the job of cleaning out stables as easy as possible, and with six horses needing constant attention, product development was often a quick affair!
Speedway elements However, it was the underlying engineering knowledge that has been at the heart of Fyna-Lite. George Fynn has been involved in engineering since the late 1940s. Originally a welder, he moved to the UK from his native Australia as a speedway rider. After his retirement from professional racing, he moved to designing and building speedway bikes. There are elements of those speedway bike designs and manufacturing techniques that have been carried over to the fork and that knowledge has been passed to son Leon. Leon Fynn has been involved since the company’s inception, and fondly remembers the early days of choosing the company name over a long Sunday lunch and of delivering forks to customers in his Fiat 127! Although he had a break to go to university, the lure of Fyna-Lite has always been strong. “I have always felt that the possibilities of Fyna-Lite are endless, and I never fail to get a buzz from hearing that somebody loves one of our forks. Just the other day I received an e-mail from a lady whose two and half year old son loved their new Mini Mucka fork. That really made my week, because I designed that particular fork for my son and I love that somebody is getting so much pleasure from it!”
Craftsmanship and innovation We have always believed that the skill of the craftsman, the use of the best quality materials and innovative designs are essential to creating the best possible tools. Even though technology advancements have meant that our forks are made more efficiently and to an ever higher standard, the basic principle and

production methods have remained constant. Our investment in tooling and machinery has been pivotal in our quest to improve the quality of our products. As our reliance on subcontract services has been cut, so the speed at which we can manufacture each batch has increased along with ability to be more flexible with a production run if the need arises. By using our own in-house expertise, we have been able to constantly improve designs to ensure the product the customer receives is of the highest standard. It is this aim for constant improvement that has kept Fyna-Lite at the forefront of our industry. We have always believed that if you cannot be the market leader in terms of product design and service to the customer, then it isn’t worth being involved in that market. It is this belief in our own products that is evident in the staff at Fyna-Lite. Key members of staff have been with the company for 10 years, and it is their knowledge and keen attention to detail during the manufacturing process that has helped make FynaLite the market leader.
Eurozone, Scandinavia, the Middle East, the USA and Japan. There is a trend among equestrian equipment purchasers towards better quality equipment, and being British made is becoming more and more important and valued. Although 2008/9 showed a slowing of sales due to the economic downturn, 2009/10 showed a 23% increase in sales with strong enquiries and growth in both the UK and export markets. Fyna-Lite now offers a fork for every bedding system that is available, with a handle variant suitable for every operator. Whether you use shavings, straw, wood pellets, paper, hemp or rubber matting, Fyna-Lite has a fork which has been designed specifically for your needs. We are currently working at adding to the range, and of course we are constantly improving our processes to ensure that the end user has the best possible tool for the job.
Worldwide success Fyna-Lite products are now exported to destinations all over the world. Although the UK accounts for the majority of sales, there has been a year on year increase in sales to the
