HorseHage Celebrates 40 Years
H
orseHage celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The company was established when the late Mark Westaway (Snr) became increasingly concerned about his event horses persistently coughing. His veterinary surgeon expressed the view that the coughing was dust-related and that since hay was the major dust source, the problem would continue unless someone could come up with a dust-free forage designed specifically for the horse. So the challenge was set and from that chance but significant remark, the idea for
HorseHage was born. The company, Mark Westaway and Son, is now headed by Mark’s son, (also named Mark) and his brother-in-law, Chris Tar. Mark Westaway & Son was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1983 after Her Majesty the Queen’s horse, Burmese, was fed HorseHage when suffering from a respiratory problem. he Worshipful Company of Saddlers has accepted an invitation from leading bodies across the equestrian industry to chair a steering group that will look at education, training and qualifications for Saddle Fitters. Those invited to attend include the British Equestrian Trade Association, British Horse Society, British Equine Veterinary Association, Society of Master Saddlers, Master Saddle Fitting Consultants Society and the Saddle Research Trust. The aim of the group will be to consider the current provision of saddle fitting education, training and qualifications, and guide a response to the needs and changes identified for the future. The Company strongly agrees
to the requirement for such a review. The Prime Warden, Charles Barclay, said: “As an interested but impartial party, we are pleased to accept the invitation to chair this new steering group, the need for which was made to us by a number of the organisations now invited to participate in the first meeting.” Society of Master Saddlers chief executive Hazel Morley said: “We are very pleased to be working with the Worshipful Company of Saddlers and other leading industry organisations to take forward saddle fitting training and qualifications. This important work has been one of the Society’s main objectives since the introduction of our first saddle fitting qualification in 1995.”
reasons for the success of HorseHage: “Firstly it is a natural product with no additives and is the nearest thing you can get to grass in the field. Secondly, it not only benefits a horse’s respiratory system, but its digestive system too. 40 years of production has given us all the knowledge and experience we need to make a top quality product.”

ritish Wholesaler Equine Management is now the exclusive distributor of the Mane ’n Tail equine grooming range in the UK and Ireland. Mane ’n Tail is the flagship brand of the American company Straight Arrow Products Inc, which manufactures equine and human
hair and skincare products. Stephen Biddlecombe, Director of Equine Management, is highly regarded for his knowledge of the international equine grooming products market, and is thrilled at the new distribution agreement. “Mane ‘n Tail joins a stable of leading brands available from us

184 years old but still leading the way! E stablished in 1832, Battles continues to be at the forefront of the Equestrian Industry in both the UK and overseas distributing an extensive range of equestrian products to distributors and retailers. The latest product to be added to the catalogue comes from security marking experts Datatag and recognises the growing issue of theft in the equine world, particularly of tack and saddles. Jim Bowen, Managing Director of Battles said, “Once you’ve found your perfect saddle it’s hard to ride on another so losing it is a
big deal. We are very excited to be able to offer our customers the Datatag Equine Marking System which affords them a level of protection which has largely been unavailable until now.” The Datatag Equine System uses hidden RFID technologies to provide a level of identification not possible before. The RFID chip is hidden deep within the saddle itself and is almost impossible to remove as such thieves tend to steer clear as the risk of being caught in possession of a stolen saddle and successfully charged is far higher with saddles protected by Datatag.
Tapeworm validation CPD day for equine SQP’s paper published V A
Tapeworm detects tapewormspecific antibodies in horse saliva to provide a tapeworm burden diagnosis of low, borderline or moderate/high and results are used to enable targeted worming for tapeworm burden control. The test has been fully validated and shown to be accurate using samples from horses examined post mortem when tapeworms were counted. This validation is detailed in the published research paper along with a comparison to the blood test. Publication in a peer reviewed journal demonstrates quality of science, reliability of the findings and that the research is of an accepted standard.
BEVA Receives Anti-biotic Stewardship Award
T
he British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) received a highly commended award at the Antibiotic Guardian Awards for their contribution to antibiotic stewardship. It was the only organisation from the veterinary profession to be shortlisted. The Antibiotic Guardian Awards were introduced this year by Public Health England (PHE) and aim to champion UK organisations and individuals who have demonstrated achievement in tackling antimicrobial resistance at a local, regional or national level. BEVA first launched its Protect ME antimicrobial campaign in 2012 to coincide with European
irbac and Trilanco and are delighted to announce the details of their CPD day for equine SQP’s that will take place at the renowned Rossdales Equine Hospital, Exning near Newmarket on Tuesday 14th June. The course will start at 10am with registration and coffee; Speaker Chris Taylor MRCVS, Virbac Technical Director will present the 3D Approach to Equine Worming
Antimicrobial Awareness day. The Association has launched additional resources each year to facilitate compliance and educate the public about the importance of antimicrobial awareness. Mark Bowen, President of BEVA and co-author of the Protect ME toolkit, said: “It is a great achievement for a veterinary organisation to be recognised alongside the human health sector which invariably has significantly more resources to support antimicrobial stewardship. Protect ME has had a fantastic uptake from the equine profession and are proud of the impact that it is having.”

Director John Burdon said, “We have a great following amongst a high number of consumers and many retailers, however, as part of ongoing analysis, we spent a long time looking at what consumers and retailers really want from our range and how best
we can continue to serve them. We spent several months looking at what was already available, how our products fitted in with horse owner’s requirements and with retail stores and how best we could give consumers a perfect product to do the job, quickly, easily and effectively and the retailer an easy, profitable sell, that has great shelf appeal. Understandably, some retailers concentrating on high ticket items sometimes forget the value of quick repeat business and potential ROI on consumables-
often leaving it to uncontrolled consignment deals that can reduce ROI dramatically from available shelf space and lead to an uncoordinated approach and a poorly balanced product range. The IV Horse range, offers well formulated products of concentrated strength that give the retailer an excellent ROI at a 75% mark up”. John and his team have worked in the equestrian trade for 20 years and prior to that spent many years in FMCG advising on how best to maximise ROI from low value high margin repeat business items. The range is serviced at local level by UK, Ireland and near continent sales contacts, where a store visit can be arranged to discuss all aspects of the fabulous IV Horse range.

Best of British
Equestrianism:
Britain at its (very) best ‘The Best of British’! We have a lot to celebrate starting with having a monarch who has served us well for sixty-three years and, at the age of ninety, continues to fulfil a demanding programme of events.
O
f course, the fact that the Queen loves horses - and is a knowledgeable and committed owner - is a huge plus for the equestrian industry. We are also fortunate to enjoy the interest and involvement of many other members of the Royal Family – several of whom have competed/ participated internationally. The Queen is admired and respected all round the world and it is impossible to evaluate the added value derived directly from our heritage. She surely represents the Best of British. Of course the Union Flag and all it represents enriches and enhances! Note that, at the age of ninety, our sovereign continues to ride!
Looking more broadly Firstly, we should examine what is meant by ‘the equestrian industry’. In entirety it is not huge but it is increasingly professional and its influence continues to extend in global terms. Very roughly it can be divided into two
divisions – one relates to horse ownership, riding and using horses – the second to the vast array of services that support horse owners. By and large we Brits aren’t arrogant but perhaps we should re-jig the title to ‘British is Best’ because, without doubt, we do some things superbly well. As an example, our native horses and ponies have a positive influence on breeding all-around the world. The products of natural development in rugged – sometimes harsh – conditions, selective breeding has produced the stunning animals that today are appreciated and employed in a wide range of disciplines and job sectors. The individual Breed Societies issue the standard against which ponies are measured and they also keep registers of pure-bred and partbred ponies.
It has since been ‘exported’ to 18 countries.
Education and training
Education and training is something else we do very well in this country. The British Horse Society examination system is comprehensive and includes the BHSAI (British Horse Society Assistant Instructor), BHSII (Intermediate Instructor), I (Instructor) and Fellow (one of the highest coaching accreditations in the world). British Riding Clubs – of which there are over 500 in the UK - support and encourage riders of all levels. The education and training they provide advances and protects the welfare and safety of horses and riders. The Pony Club is the largest association of riders in the world and we can be rightly proud that it was founded in England in 1929.
Competitive sectors The UK produces world-class competitors in all equestrian

Many elite riders started their journey to success in the Pony Club an indication of the important contribution it makes to equestrianism. The British Equestrian Federation has made huge advances in the last few years, not least in setting up valuable training programmes in partnerships with other bodies. These have helped to raise the standards of UK performance internationally. And of course, British coaches have achieved notable success with individual and teams in this country and abroad. Badminton, Burghley, Hickstead, the Royal International Horse Show, Horse of the Year Show… a vast programme of racing fixtures… championships for carriage driving, dressage, vaulting and reining – and a lot more - all attract huge audiences and help to increase widely ranging involvement and participation. Competitors from abroad come to this country knowing that they will experience some of the Best of British thus boosting our standing internationally. British universities, colleges and other providers offer a wide range of Further Education, Higher Education, British Horse Society, sector-specific training and courses that equip people to enter the equestrian industry sector of their choice. No other country provides a more comprehensive range of vocational and professional qualifications. The excellence of the saddlery training in this country produces superb world-class craftsmen and

women who excel in saddle, bridle and harness-making. The UK was the first country in the world to institute a fully monitored saddle-fitting qualification. Formulated and introduced by The Society of Master Saddlers, the qualification is respected around the world. Aligned to this work, the Society educated horse owners and riders about the importance – in welfare and success terms - of equipping their horse with a correctly fitting saddle. As a result, British horse owners are arguably the best informed in the world. British riding holiday and trekking centres are well run, they cater for people of all ages and varying levels of experience. Welfare and safety are paramount and the locations are stunning. Equi-tourism makes a valuable contribution to the economy.
Retailing
Saddlers and feed merchants must be amongst the very best retailers in relation to offering customer services and advice. Many offer specialist help in relation to equine nutrition; those who are members of the Society of Master Saddlers provide a range of saddlery services that can include qualified saddle fitting, re-flocking and repairs – and a great deal more. Some offer bespoke services such as made-to-measure bridlework, and so on. Qualified and Master Saddlers also produce items that aren’t directly related to horses such as bags, belts, wallets, purses and briefcases. Their proud boast is ‘If it’s leather, we can make it!’ Many of our craftspeople have world-class skills, something that
is recognised around the globe. Several equestrian retailers and suppliers hold Royal Warrants – a sure indication that they are the Best of British. Many of them export to the Middle East, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, the Far East, Asia and Europe. They help to build the British profile abroad and we achieve multiple benefits. Stable design and manufacture have come a long way in the last few years. ‘Traditional’ designs are still popular but today a wide range of ‘modern’ designs are making admired additions to portfolios. The use of sustainable materials is an increasingly important factor, something the industry regards seriously.
Trend to spend
The latest National Equestrian Survey (conducted for the British Trade Association in 2016) indicates that in 2011 83% of people bought from a ‘bricks and mortar’ retail store and last year this rose to 87%. Internet buying rose from 49% in 2011 to 64% in 2015. Most of the major equestrian retailers operate online shopping services, often aligned to highly specialised help and advice. An indication of the excellence of the services offered within the sector relates to the fact that the economic value of consumer spending rose from 2011 to 2015. Last year it was estimated that £3,600 was spent on each horse – an upward trend from the estimated £2,650 per horse spent in 2011. Stringencies attached to public funding have resulted in a reduction in many areas of research so it is good to note that the feed industry continues to invest considerable sums in developing understanding of equine nutritional requirements. At the same time research into materials used in the wider equestrian industry is also maintained.
‘The media’ continues to be influential in many spheres – arguably no more so than in the equestrian world. Examination of the numbers of national, regional and local equine-related magazines standing up to competition in an increasingly difficult climate indicates loyal and appreciative readers. Journalists and PR agencies and consultants offer expertise that helps to enliven and coordinate a widely diverse industry. It would be easy to ignore or dismiss the art galleries, studios, auctioneers and dealers who specialise in equine related fine art. They handle some of the ‘Best of British’ and collectively attract substantial investment including money from abroad that helps to boost the economy. Demand for equestrian properties continues to rise as a result of which the numbers of specialist agents has increased. Set up to provide advice - especially helpful to first-time buyers of equestrian property- they are in demand in all parts of the country. The services offered in the UK are amongst the very Best in the World.
Best for business
The Brits are very, very clever and entrepreneurial at finding niche markets and setting up enterprises that create and fulfil demand. Often the ideas are simple: a rug-cleaning service or windowcleaning services specialising in stables, for example. Many are renowned for the exemplary services they provide. In their small but important ways, they are amongst the Best of British. The UK is home to some remarkably good equine-related charities that undertake exemplary work in this country and abroad. They surely represent the Best of British in relation to equine welfare by rescuing, caring for and re-homing thousands of animals – some of which have endured indescribable suffering. A lot of small children commence
best of british their riding careers on a rocking horse! We have superb craftsmen and women producing a range of beautifully designed and hand-crafted horses and many of them are equipped with top-of-the-range saddles and bridles. Plaited or unplaited, they are turned out ready for Windsor. Modern designs middle with Victorian replicas and bespoke horses; undoubtedly British makers are amongst the best in the world. Everyone in the industry knows that overseas manufactures – for example, the Chinese – have made big inroads into the UK equestrian market - especially in terms of price. As in many markets, we battle with the fact that wages and overheads are much higher in the UK. At the same time, we have something no other country can boast – we have the Union Flag that even today commands respect around the globe.
“As in many markets, we battle with the fact that wages and overheads are much higher in the UK. “ In or out?
Brexit or stay in? How will this affect the UK equestrian industry? Everyone who has studied the Referendum documents…viewed the films… and listened to interviews… will know that spurious statements, vague comments and manipulated statistics are being bandied around on both sides. People who started off on one side have changed their minds and joined the other. Not a few people have elected to abstain. ‘Guesses’ and ‘pins’ are increasingly entering the scenario. Federalism is being praised in some areas, loathed in others. Well – we asked for the vote and we’ve got it! The Referendum is on 23rd June. Whatever happens, one prediction remains constant – horses, ponies and equestrianism will always be close to the heart of the British. The full strength of UK equestrian industry will continue to support every element and every horse and rider.
Nicky Fletcher MA, Managing Director, EQUISAFETY Ltd
Why ‘Made In Britain’?
Equisafety, the UK’s largest specialist equine high visibility company, began its manufacturing journey over 15 years ago, initially manufacturing products using UK factories. However, costs and order sizes soon determined a move to using factories in China.
T
he equestrian high visibility market was negligible when Equisafety first began and through hard work and exciting designs the company has helped develop this market into the size it is today. 2018 will see the launch of the new couture fashion collection (not high viz) which will be 100% UK manufactured – from cloth, to packaging and through to the finished garment. Nicky Fletcher, MD of Equisafety recently went to the ‘Meet the Manufacturer’ trade show, held at the Old Trueman Brewery in London, to search for new and exciting UK manufacturing companies. Nicky said, “China is great for high volume, but the factories can be challenging to deal with. Language is obviously a big issue and they may not understand your requirements 100% - having very strong spec sheets is vital. Our new fashion range is going to be very high end, offering exclusive items with a limited amount being made of each creation. My investors come from the luxury end of fashion and they are wanting to take the equine market into that area. Working entirely in the UK will mean we can work with the factory very closely and keep an eye on the quality. “Manufacturing in the UK is more expensive than China, but it has so many benefits. For example, if something goes wrong with a China order, you’re talking about hundreds, if not thousands, of products that are incorrect, which you could be stuck with. You’ve had to pay the shipping, duty and VAT on products that are either poor quality or just not what you ordered, and what do you do with them? They have your brand
name on them? If you sell them cheaply, it could damage your brand and company’s reputation. “This would not happen in the UK. You could check the order before it was shipped. You would not have to pay everything up front. “During the past 20 years of being a sportswear designer, I have noticed that UK manufacturing is definitely on the up. “The trade show ‘Meet the Manufacturer’ was packed. It was fantastic to see so many people wanting more information from UK companies showing there. It was not just factories, but also fabric manufacturers with new exciting fabrics, packaging manufacturers, shoe makers, pattern cutting/ design freelancers and the latest technology. “The show also featured some very interesting, informative and inspiring speakers, from every aspect of the fashion world. Perhaps this is something that the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) should look into, and I’d be happy to work with them. “If you worked out all the time spent trying to sort out your range with Chinese manufactures, the cost of visits, expensive faulty orders, delivery times, costs up front, and the stress, and looked at the cost of making it in the UK, I suspect you would not be far off equal in cost. Yet your product would be better made, you would have less stress, you would not have to order as much, turn around would not be so long and you would have more time on your hands. “I talk about ‘time’ a lot, but TIME is one of the most expensive and precious parts of your company. What price do you put on your own and your staff’s time? If you
could manufacture in the UK, you would have more time on your hands which would be spent building your business further? Plus, it would be advantageous to the UK economy. “In the international market MADE IN UK or MADE IN BRITAIN is hugely respected. If you’re wanting to enter the USA market, and they do adore us ‘Brits’, having MADE IN BRITAIN on your product will certainly add a lot to your range. “A Made in Britain key ring saved my Great Uncles life in WW2 but that’s a whole different story. “The United Kingdom is a very well respected country with fantastic designers, fabrics and factories, just sitting on your door step. “Many high street brands like Marks and Spencer, Top Shop, ASOS and Boo Hoo, all have exclusive lines that are made in the UK and that list is rising. “The luxury clothing market is increasing with people prepared to pay more for their clothing. If you have the right business structure, market placement and of course fantastic designs, you can’t go wrong manufacturing in the UK. If you have a great idea and are passionate about that idea, you will be able to sell it.”

Flying the flag for Saddlery Training In this issue the Society of Master Saddlers provides advice on the Best of British training when it comes to the craft of saddlery.
T
he society’s history is deeply rooted in the preservation and maintenance of the skills and craftsmanship needed to produce high quality saddlery and leather goods and continues to be so. “British made saddlery is the best in the world, as are our training facilities for those wishing to enter the trade,” says Society of Master Saddlers’ Chief Executive, Hazel Morley.
“British made saddlery is the best in the world” “Society of Master Saddlers’ members in the individual craft categories can turn their hand to a wide variety of leather bespoke items. The Society offers a CPD scheme for all members to ensure their skills are up to date and a range of courses for those wishing to extended their practices.” The journey to becoming a Master Saddler takes at least seven years. Mark Romain, MBE and Master Saddler, of the Saddlery Training Centre explains the route. “Those aged 16 to 24-years-old and wanting to make a career in the saddlery craft world will
usually gain an apprenticeship with a Master Saddler where they will work for around six months and then start the scheme. The Government Apprentice Scheme provides funding for their ‘off the job’ training weeks at The Saddlery Training Centre. In the first 12 months students complete the Level 2 Apprenticeship and have six weeks’ training at the Saddlery Training Centre. Advanced level is then developed over the next 24 months with 12 weeks spent training. Following the three years students will have gained their City & Guilds Assessments Level 2 and Level 3 in bridle and saddle making. Once they have then worked in the industry for a total of four years the apprentices will gain Qualified Saddler status.” Mark explained that there is also the Millennium Apprentice Scheme run by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers inconjunction with the Society of Master Saddlers. This route has no age limit and requires the apprentice to have employment with a Master Saddler. A visitor is appointed who will be a Master Saddle member of the Society and they will visit the apprentice at regular intervals

throughout the apprenticeship, to check and encourage their progress. For anyone looking to become a Master Saddler the journey takes at least seven years with three years’ work/employment after the initial four as an apprentice/trainee. “Anyone applying for Master Saddler status will be required to show their work, or have entered the National Competition in London and will also have the support and vote of two existing Master Saddlers,” adds Mark: For those who are unable to find an apprenticeship a number fund their own training as part of the New Entrants Training Scheme at the Saddlery Training Centre, attending a number of courses per year working through the necessary City & Guilds Saddlery skill assessment. For others the initial choice is to undertake the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers’ Diploma in Saddle, Harness and Bridle Making at Capel Manor College in Enfield. The college provide the only full-time saddlery courses in the UK which are overseen by Master Saddler Line
Hansen. Students attend for two years and then progress to either an apprenticeship or working in the industry whilst gaining their higher qualifications. There are also some private training establishments in the UK, all run by Master Saddlers, where those wishing to enter the trade can gain good basic skills before going on to gain their saddlery qualifications. Information about saddlery training and the Society of Master Saddlers can be found on the website: www.mastersaddlers. co.uk or telephone +44 (0)1449 711642.

afe-Care Equine started in 2010 when the owners struggled to find natural grooming products for their own horses that were affordable. Having decided to blend their own, the family business started with an online shop and by selling at local shows near their Headquarters in Ayrshire, Scotland. The company has since grown in the last six years and now has over 70 UK retail stockists and two European distributors. They are proud of their British heritage and hope to grow the business in the UK retail space and across Europe in the next three years. They want their customers to be able to make a natural choice but without the traditional ‘organic’ price-tag.

he Animal Health Company was set up by Nick Westcott 26 years ago. When Nick retired 11 years ago his son Paul, took over the reins of the company. Over the years the company has gone from strength to strength starting with canine products then adding equestrian and poultry ranges. The company offers quality products from quality ingredients, which are made with love and care in their factory in Essex. They pride themselves on creating ways in which the animals receive the greatest benefits in the highest quantities from the herbal elements of their products. They are also looking into developing new products for the market which reflect their motto ‘committed to animal health’.
ince 1999 the family business at Westgate has been leading the field in helping horse owners to manage the parasite control of their horses and other grazing animals. The original postal worm count service, the laboratory offers quick, easy to use, great value postal worm count and testing services direct to horse owners as well as through merchants, retailers, vets and yards. Westgate’s mission has always been to improve the way horses are wormed in the UK and this ethos remains at the heart of the business. Through friendly education and support, the team of qualified SQP’s hs supported thousands of people to follow best practice in line with advice from the British Equine Veterinary Association and leading parasitologists, targeting wormer use to keep horses as healthy as possible while slowing drug resistance. The company do not sell wormers so their advice remains independent.

Equine Supplements
“It is easy to forget that the skin, like other organs, requires essential nutrients to support normal function”
Supplements to maintain healthy skin The skin is the largest organ within the horse’s body. Dr Becky Lees BVSc Cert AVP (EM) MRCVS explains that as well as acting as a protective barrier, the skin and coat provide an excellent indicator of the general health of the horse.
A
smooth, glossy coat isn’t just important for showring shine. When combined with healthy skin, which is supple and resilient it gives us an excellent indicator of the horse’s general health and wellbeing. Grooming and grooming products will help keep a horse’s coat in top condition and many horse owners will reach for these products at the first sign of a problem. However, great skin and coat condition comes from within. It is easy to forget that the skin, like other organs, requires essential nutrients to support normal function and that nutrition has an important role to play in providing the foundations for looking good.
30 Equestrian June 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Nutrient utilisation
The horse’s body will conserve the nutrients that it receives from the diet first for vital internal body functions as these are essential for survival. The skin and coat are a luxury item in terms of survival, so their needs will only be met when the vital needs have been fulfilled. This means that the skin and coat often give us the first sign that the horse’s diet may be lacking in essential nutrients. Many horses do not require a full ration of hard feed. Horses in light and medium work are often successfully maintained on a forage based diet. Diets that just rely on forage, such as grass, hay or haylage with small amounts
of hard feed can be lacking in vitamins, minerals and trace elements. This can cause changes in the skin and coat dependent on what is lacking within the diet. With poor diets we can see a dry, scurfy moth-eaten coat with poor skin elasticity. In addition normal hair shedding and regrowth can be impaired. If we want our horses to look their best, it therefore stands to reason that a balanced diet is essential. If horses are being fed a full ration of hard feed then the feed company’s qualified nutritionist or an independent qualified equine nutritionist should be consulted. When horses are being fed a forage based diet with minimal
hard feed a supplement is ideal to help balance the diet and maintain healthy skin and coat condition.
Supplements and the law
It is important to remember that supplements are not licensed medicines. Licensed veterinary medicines are regulated by the Veterinary Medicines Act. This requires that the efficacy of the drug has been proven by peer reviewed research and a license granted for the use of the product for a purpose. Supplements are considered to be complementary feeds and therefore have not been licensed and do not have the sufficient peer
Equine Supplements
Diets that just rely on forage, such as hay can be lacking in vitamins, minerals and trace elements
“Supplements that are free from added sugar are always superior” reviewed research behind them to prove an effect. This means that companies selling supplements are not allowed to make medicinal claims about these products. Therefore, it cannot be claimed that supplements prevent, treat or cure any disease. If retailers believe that a product label, product literature or company is making claims that a product prevents, treats or cures a disease then this should be reported to the VMD. This means that retailers cannot recommend products to treat, help or prevent skin conditions such as flaky skin, itchiness and skin conditions such as sweet itch. Horse owners should be directed to their own vet to discuss their concerns and seek treatment. Retailers and companies selling these products can only recommend them to help maintain healthy skin and coat condition and maintain general health.
Recommending a supplement for horses fed forage only diets
Many horse owners believe that if their horse is out at grass, or is
on a grass and hay ration and the horse is maintaining their weight then feeding a supplement is not necessary. However, this does not give the full story, as although this diet is likely to supply sufficient energy and protein, it is unlikely to supply the horse’s full requirement of minerals, vitamins and trace elements. Grass is often low in trace elements and this can be affected by factors such as the soil type, the speed of grass growth and the time of year. During storage, the vitamin content of conserved forages such as hay and haylage will deplete. This is especially true for vitamin E, where levels have been shown to drop by more than 50% in 3 months. Research has also shown that when hay is soaked significant amounts of vitamins, minerals and trace elements are lost. It is therefore essential for horses that are fed soaked hay to also receive a supplement. This means that horses on forage only diets, plus horses that are only fed small amounts of hard feed and all horses being fed soaked hay should all be fed an an all purpose vitamin and mineral supplement or balancer. These products should contain
a complete package of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Supplements that are free from added sugar are always superior and many of these supplements have added benefits such as prebiotics and probiotics to help support and maintain digestive health.
Recommending a supplement for skin and coat health
A horse owner may already be feeding a balanced diet, but they may want to add in a supplement to help ensure that their horse maintains a healthy glossy coat for the show season. Or they may be faced with the scenario that despite feeding a balanced diet, some horses still need a little extra help to get them looking their best. In both these cases they need a supplement formulated to be fed on top of a balanced diet to provide higher levels of certain key nutrients that are linked to maintaining good skin and coat condition. These supplements should contain:
Omega oils
Oils contain fatty acids. Unfortunately not all fatty acids are created equal and positive health benefits are not associated with each kind of fat or oil. It is important to choose carefully what type of oil is fed to horses, as by altering the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the diet you can potentially give beneficial health benefits to the horse. Forages, which make up the bulk of the horse’s diet, typically contain only a small amount of crude fat, however they are naturally higher in omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids are metabolised to produce inflammatory mediators called prostaglandins. These are proinflammatory, which can be detrimental to health. In contrast, the omega-3 fatty acids are metabolised to mediators that inhibit the production of proinflammatory mediators and are considered to give health

benefits because of this. Altering the horse’s diet by increasing the ratio of omega-3 fatty acids through supplementation can change the type of inflammatory mediators produced and potentially give health benefits to the horse. The best oils to recommend that are high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in omega-6 fatty acids are linseed (flaxseed) oil and fish oils, such as cod liver oil.
dysfunction. Fortunately deficiency is uncommon, however biotin has a key role in metabolism and to maintain healthy hooves, skin and coat. Supplementation with biotin at a feeding rate of 15mg per day is thought to be sufficient to maintain healthy skin and coat, with higher feeding rates being beneficial to aid the maintenance of healthy hoof growth.
Biotin
These are two trace elements that support the formation of keratin and collagen that are vital for sustaining healthy skin and hair. Equine diets can often be low in zinc and manganese.
Biotin is a B vitamin that is well known to be important to help maintain healthy hoof growth. Horses are incapable of synthesizing biotin, so it must be obtained through the diet or via the absorption of biotin that is synthesized by intestinal bacteria. Recommending a supplement for horses with problem skin and coats Although retailers must direct
horse owners to their own vet with regard to treatment of skin conditions it is often requested and is appropriate to help advise these horse owners on supplements to help maintain healthy skin in these horses. The horse owner should be advised to check with their own vet if they have any queries. The most common summer skin allergy is sweet itch and it causes misery for many horses and ponies every summer. Because of this, most of the research on maintaining healthy skin in horses with skin conditions has been carried out on horses with sweet itch. Supplements containing nicotinamide, the active form of Vitamin B3 (Niacin) have been shown to reduce histamine release, one of the causes of itchiness in horses with skin allergies. Therefore it is sensible

to recommend a supplement that contains nicotinamide or niacin to help maintain healthy skin for these horses. Recent research in Canada has shown that supplementing the diets of sweet itch horses with omega-3 fatty acids reduced horses’ skin reactions to midge bites. Therefore to help maintain healthy skin for horses that suffer from sweet itch it is worth recommending feeding an oil that contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Both linseed (flaxseed) oil and cod liver oil are ideal to recommend. To give the best effect to help maintain healthy skin in these horses, these measures should be started before the allergy has started. So in the case of sweet itch, before the midge season and then used in conjunction with midge avoidance strategies and repellents.

Anyone who thought information about the EU Referendum would be straightforward, categorical and easy-to-understand must be very disappointed indeed. Confusion about the benefits of remaining in the EU and the advantages of leaving is growing. Voters who had previously declared themselves committed are changing their views – and vastly increasing numbers are stating they will abstain because the issues involved are muddied. The slogans are about the only things that are completely clear although even those are bewildering – is it really necessary for the ‘Out’ side to have two slogans – and does this indicate some dissension? STAY IN: BRITAIN’S STRONGER IN EUROPE. LEAVE: VOTE LEAVE LEAVE: LEAVE EU Rules for exiting the EU were set out in the Treaty of Lisbon. Briefly: once formal notice is given the UK has two years in which to negotiate a reformed relationship unless there is unanimous agreement to extend the processes. Failure to agree a deal/ extend the negotiation period would mean the UK leaving with no deal agreed. However, and this is very important, should the UK vote ‘out’ this would not constitute formal notice. The Prime Minister would need to issue Brussels with a formal statement of withdrawal but the UK would continue to remain a member up to the negotiated and agreed exit date. However – and again very important – during this period the UK would not have a vote in discussions regarding extending negotiations. A recent poll indicates a majority in favour of remaining. One of the big questions for Equestrian Business readers is, how will the UK’s equestrian industry be affected if we opt for OUT? Should we continue to remain IN, will the industry benefit? Anyone who can answer these questions accurately, will be achieving far more than any of the campaigners on either
side of the debate! Of course, if the UK does vote to leave the Government must commit to securing tariff-free access to the EU for UK products and confirm the intention to replace all trade agreements that currently exist between the EU and other nations before the exit. Insights… H.M. Government’s document ‘Why the Government believes that voting to remain in the European Union is the best decision for the UK’, cost £9million to publish, a copy has been distributed to every household in the UK. EUReferendum.gov.uk National Farmers’ Union (NFU) commissioned LEI Wageningen UR to model three trade scenarios in the event of leaving the EU. nfuonline.com The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has produced a report - ‘Leave or Remain’ – which provides a comprehensive appraisal of the rural considerations most specifically in regard to trade, direct support, regulation and the labour market related to the decisions that our politicians must make if Britain stays in - and if Britain leaves. cla.org.uk Rural Plc has produced a document ‘Unravelling the Referendum’ that endeavours to provide an insight as follows: Referendum on 23rd June 2016 to determine whether the UK remains or leaves the European Union. ❚ A ‘leave’ vote will result in a two-year period concerning the UK’s trading relationship with Europe. ❚ A ‘leave’ date might be negotiated to fit in with the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, the current period of which is due to end 31st December 2020. ❚ A ‘leave’ vote will require development of payment policies
to replace CAP. ❚ CAP has not been regarded as an unqualified success by British farmers – nor by those outside the industry – who have complained that it represents poor value, is badly targeted and the delivery is inefficient. Leaving the EU would mean that the UK government would have total control of payments. Remaining in the EU would leave the door open to negotiate and influence CAP policy and procedures. ❚ Staying in the EU will require retention of existing regulations. ❚ Leaving the EU will allow deregulation of existing rules and development and implementation of a new structure. ❚ In the event of leaving the EU, decisions about payments and policies could involve devolvement between the four UK nations. ❚ The UK has had a substantial trade deficit in farming/food products for many years. Many observers suggest that leaving the EU would result in a substantial adjustment in favour of UK produce; others are more sceptical and suggest that the deficit is irreversible. ‘Statistics’ favour both sides of the debate. ❚ UK governments have hitherto been strong supporters of environmental protection policies and it is fair to assume this would continue if the UK leaves the EU. In the absence of any detailed policy post a decision to leave the EU, it is generally assumed that rural development programmes would continue, albeit with policy changes. Fears that land prices would fall if the UK withdraws from the EU are already said to be having an impact. Concerns mostly relate to the fact that the prices of land have reacted to past ‘adverse’ changes in CAP. This would be regulated by the UK government implanting a favourable payment policy.

Hoof and Leg Care
Best foot, and leg, forwards No foot, no horse’ is a saying that every horse owner has heard many times over. It goes way, way back, but is as true today as when it was first mooted eons ago.
I
f the balance of the foot isn’t ‘right’, the rest of the horse will suffer. By the same token, if the horse’s limbs aren’t well proportioned, the foot and the rest of the horse will suffer. Hoof and leg care, as with other topics covered in this edition of Equestrian Business, shouldn’t be ‘compartmentalised’. Retailers will be doing a great service to equestrianism if they add their voice to those of vets, farriers, nutritionists, horse owners, riders, trainers, instructors – and everyone else who has an involvement – to
applying holism to all subjects. Equestrian retailers aren’t vets or farriers but, without having a basic understanding of equine anatomy, it is difficult to offer consumers easy-to-understand advice about off-the-shelf treatments for foot and leg problems.
The Foot
The foot is the foundation on which the horse is built. O. R. Adams, DVM, MS commented ‘Good conformation of the foot is essential to normal activities of the horse. No matter how good
The services of a proficient farrier are essential
the conformation of other areas, if the foot is weak, the horse is not a useful animal. To have good foot conformation, a horse must have reasonably good limb conformation since the foot reflects poor conformation of the limbs’. Good feet can be ruined if they aren’t properly and regularly looked after. The services of a proficient farrier are essential but, however exemplary, it is up to the owner to make regular bookings. This applies when the horse is in regular work, on holiday, turned away or retired. It is not unusual for some owners to assume that when their horse is on holiday - or off work for another reason - it is not necessary to maintain regular bookings with the farrier. They judge by the state of the shoes without taking any account of the way the foot continues to grow! The ‘normal’ growth rate for equines is about ¼” a month but this is very variable in much the same way that our finger nails don’t all grow at the same rate. An unbalanced foot will impact on the horse’s limbs and
Andrew Parks, MA, VetMB, MRCVS, Dipl. ACVS, professor of equine lameness and head of the Large Animal Medicine department at the University of Georgia’s School of Veterinary Medicine, has a wonderfully apt way of describing conformation: ‘the sum of all the pieces and parts, the size and shape, and the way they relate to form the whole’.
thus the gait. Adams and Stashak’s ‘Lameness in Horses - sixth edition – is an excellent tool for retailers and horse owners because it is straightforward and includes easy-to-understand descriptions and information about conformation ‘defects’ in the feet and limbs.
Retailer’s role
The ranges of supplements and formulations available to deal with problems (such as brittle feet, frequent loss of shoes and cracks) continue to expand and owners usually expect their retailers to have fully up-to-date knowledge and advice about across the counter products the market offers. And course, farriers often favour particular

Hoof and Leg Care A large proportion of equine lameness commences in the foot – in fact, it has been estimated than as many as 90% of problems originate in the feet. The experienced owner is generally able to diagnose simple problems - a lightly bruised sole for example – but generally speaking lameness involves calling for professional help.
formulations and it is a good idea for retailers to familiarise themselves with their thinking and preferences. Some retailers organise advisory presentations by a local farrier as part of the services they provide for customers – and this can also be a big boost for staff training. Today’s customers don’t only want the names of supplements and other products suggested to them, they also expect to be given comprehensive information about usage. Increasingly they ask about formulation and there is special interest in ‘natural’ ingredients and how they work. Hoof oil, conditioners, dressings, disinfectants, sprays, heel hardeners, corn aids and other products remain high on the agenda for horse owners. Many have their ‘favourites’, some of which they have been using for a very long time – but they are still interested in new products and

developments, most especially any formulations which are based on the most recent research.
Protection and prevention
Hoof boots and other protective foot equipment is another area in which customers often seek information and advice from the retailer. Internet sales –
even in relation to ‘specialised’ products of these types - is escalating and the best way the retailer can offset this problem is by ensuring he is recognised and valued for advice on which the customer can rely because it fulfils individual needs, is accurate and unbiased. The horse with good conformation will be wellbalanced and so able to use
every part of his body fully and thus less likely to suffer strains and sprains and manifest a variety of other musculoskeletal problems. Poor conformation can result in gait abnormalities such as when a leg - or legs - do not travel in a straight line - as in dishing. The legs might also brush or knock to the extent of causing cuts, and severe bruising. Very substantial numbers of horses suffer bruises, abrasions, cuts and other injuries to the legs – including animals that do not exhibit any gait malfunctions that might dispose them to such injuries. Prevention being infinitely better than cure – and generally much cheaper to put into practice – demand for leg and other protective equipment continues to be high. Most competition horses are automatically equipped with safety gear appropriate

Hoof and Leg Care to the rules of the relevant discipline because their riders are very aware how easy it is for a freak accident to occur. Far fewer riders are aware of the importance of protecting their horse’s feet and limbs when they are out hacking or undertaking some other seemingly low-key activity. Novice and less experienced riders usually need help with choosing – and fitting – equipment that will protect vulnerable parts of their horse’s feet and legs Of course, this doesn’t only apply to situations when the horse is being ridden – some very nasty accidents to feet and legs occur when the horse is being travelled in a box or trailer.
Barefoot
Retailers need to be aware that interest in one aspect of equine management – barefoot - is increasing in the UK and many other countries around the world. Stuart Attwood - profiled in another part of this edition whose own horse is maintained barefoot comments, “The tradition of placing a metal shoe on the feet of horses started around 700 A.D. The way man looked after horses changed from one that was largely free- roaming to one where the horse was largely kept inside fortifications to be ready for battle purposes at short notice”. “This tradition was maintained
Retailers need to be aware that interest in barefoot is increasing
even after the use of horses changed and, for many, continues to this day because the belief that the horse can’t do without metal shoes prevails.” The foot of the horse is a very complicated structure that has evolved over millennia. The skeletal structure of the leg is only ‘attached’ to the hoof capsule by soft tissue and is,
in effect, ‘floating’. In relative anatomy terms to humans it would be akin to us walking on the very tips of our middle fingers. When the foot of an unshod horse strikes the ground the hoof wall flexes and contracts when it is in the swing phase of the stride. This flex/contraction motion acts as a ‘pump’ in that it helps the flow of blood up the leg
“they are still interested in new products and developments” back to the heart. A metal shoe attached to the hoof capsule prevent most of this action,” says Stuart, adding “The frog and sensitive frog inside the hoof act as ‘shock absorbers’ – an important function. In shod horses the frog is unlikely to be in contact with the ground.” “With dietary and management changes most horses could transition to being unshod and have healthier feet as a result. The use of an applied equine podiatrist, or specific barefoot trimmer, facilitates this change as does, when possible, keeping horses on an equine track system as movement is thus increased.” The best retailers are knowledgeable, up-to-date and are good at disseminating information and advice. This especially applies when the advice given is applied holistically. Join the Equestrian Business campaign to reduce compartmentalised thinking. Equine Nutrition Stud Feeds information on breeding diets will help customers to make informed choices when feeding their broodmares. Using a weigh tape regularly allows horse owners to notice small changes in their horse’s weight and adjust their diets accordingly. During periods of reduced turn out and when feeding preserved forages such as hay and haylage , mares may not receive optimal levels of essential antioxidants, such as vitamin E and organic selenium during the breeding season. This can result in increased levels of free radicals within the body, which

There may be plenty of grass this year, but do you have the right products in stock to ensure your customers’ mares and youngstock are receiving a balanced diet? Chris Gordon, Equine Specialist at Dodson & Horrell offers some timely advice.
A
t this time of the year with the grass looking good and growing well it is easy to assume mares and youngstock are getting all the nutrients they require for good health and growth, but unfortunately this is not always the case. Even if your customers have the best managed paddocks, with an abundance of grass, this will only
meet some of a horse’s nutrient requirements and will inevitably be low in trace elements such as copper, magnesium and zinc which may have a detrimental effect on the fertility of a mare, the foetal development in a pregnant mare and the correct bone development in weanlings and yearlings.
Meet the Author
Research has shown that under or overweight mares are at increased risk of reproductive problems such as delayed conception, abnormal oestrus cycles and increased risk of embryonic loss. For optimal fertility, mares should enter and maintain a body fat score of 3-3.5 out of 5 throughout the breeding season. For customers seeking a solution to mares prone to excessive

weight gain, you might suggest they feed a pellet that’s high in minerals and vitamins as it will not contribute to weight gain. This can be fed until about three months prior to the foal being born, when a good quality stud cube or stud diet should be introduced and continued until the foal is about three months old. To enable complete flexibility and allow for the adjustment of calorie intake according to the horse’s individual needs a minerals and vitamins can be fed alongside a stud diet. For mares prone to weight loss a high fat pellet such as rice bran can be fed alongside a stud diet, stud cubes or stud balancer to provide an additional source of highly digestible calories. Stocking weigh tapes and feed scoops with accurate measures as well as supplying the relevant

This damage may contribute to poor conception rates, increased risk of abortion and infertility. Therefore it is important to provide a specifically formulated stud feed to allow optimal levels of vitamin E and organic selenium to help neutralise free radicals, improve the horse’s total antioxidant status and minimise the risk of oxidative damage affecting reproductive performance.
Foetal development
If a mare is fed solely on straights without an appropriate balancer, or fed only forages such as being out at grass, or if she is fed a ration not specifically formulated for broodmares, she will be receiving sub optimal nutrition leading to trace element deficiencies in her and the developing foetus. Trace element deficiencies can have a significant effect even at the first stages of foetal development as is being demonstrated by the latest research in epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of how environmental factors such as diet can permanently alter the functioning of genes without directly altering the DNA. This exciting area of new research is looking into how sub-optimum nutrition during pregnancy may

Colostrum quality
Low immunoglobulin (IgG) levels in the mare’s colostrum significantly increases the risk of failure of passive transfer, leaving the foal vulnerable to illness and disease. Research has shown that feeding high levels of vitamin E improves colostrum quality and IgG levels in the foal. It is important that a broodmare’s diet includes the optimum level of mannan oligosaccharides (MOS), a complex of carbohydrate molecules found in yeast cell walls. MOS acts as a prebiotic and promotes a healthy population of micro-organisms within the digestive system. It has also been shown that MOS helps to increase the levels of immunglobulins in a mare’s colostrum therefore increasing the success of passive transfer. When considering which diets to stock, consider ranges that include MOS in all of their stud and breeding diets.
swiftly and not have to wait for a delivery. Milk replacer can be feed alongside foal creep from the tenth day onwards to help provide nutritionally balanced high quality protein to foals whose dams are not producing sufficient milk or orphaned foals.
Nutritional support for youngstock Dodson & Horrell’s research has shown that youngstock fed a diet of only forage will be deficient in several important minerals including copper and zinc. These deficiencies will have a detrimental effect on health, growth and development unless they are corrected by feeding a fully balanced concentrate feed. Between the ages of four weeks and four months of age a foal goes through an ‘immunity gap’, where its immune system is weakened. During this period the foal may be less able to mount an immune defence to potentially harmful micro-organisms if they are not getting all the nutrients they need and this can lead to an increase in common illnesses such as ‘snotty
“A ‘mineral and vitamin gap’ similar to the ‘immunity gap’ also occurs in foals around the three month stage” Orphaned foals
During the breeding season it is important to make sure that you have a good quality mare’s milk replacer in stock as this is the best way to supplement milk intake for a foal. Whether the foal has been orphaned or the mare is not producing enough milk a quality mare’s milk replacer provides calories, protein, vitamins and minerals to support the growing foal. It can be fed to a foal from one day old until weaning, it is important to understand that it is not a source of colostrum. It is vital that a foal consumes colostrum as its primary source of milk within the first 12-14 hours of birth to allow for the development of its immune system. Keeping this crucial product in stock at all times during the foaling season is vital, when a foal is orphaned it is imperative that the owner can get hold of a mare’s milk replacer

noses’. A ‘mineral and vitamin gap’ similar to the ‘immunity gap’ also occurs in foals around the three month stage where the foals reserves stored in the liver are becoming depleted and this coincides with the quality of the mares milk declining. It is essential that a concentrate feed with high levels of minerals and vitamins is introduced before this stage. This will also acclimatise the foal to eating concentrate feed before weaning. Feeds formulated to provide optimal levels of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium to support skeletal development and bone mineral content will ensure correct growth. The addition of chelated trace minerals such as copper increases its bioavailability and help to support proper cartilage development. The inclusion of MOS in young stock feeds is also beneficial to help support gut health. MOS has the ability to bind to harmful pathogens such as E-coli and salmonella, and remove them from the body before they bind to the intestinal wall.
After weaning a pellet that’s high in minerals and vitamins can be continued to be fed and if required a yearling cube or diet can be added through the winter months depending on the foal’s condition and environmental factors such as weather, forage quality and availability. In the spring, advise customers that they should revert back to Suregrow as the grass will be providing plenty of energy and protein.
Summary
It is always best to advise customers to keep feeding regimes as simple as possible. It is important to make sure that nutritionally balanced diets are always provided to broodmares and growing youngstock. Owners should try to avoid their mares or youngstock becoming overweight as it can cause complications with foaling and may have a detrimental effect on the health and longevity of the foal or yearling. Always make sure that mare’s milk replacer is available during the foaling season for emergencies.

Pick of the products Unique Nutritional Mare & Support for Foals Youngstock Baileys Foal Assist is a vitamin and trace mineral formulation for suckling foals, designed to supplement the micronutrient levels of the dam’s milk. It’s particularly suitable for rapidly growing foals, supplying the additional micronutrients they need without unwanted carbohydrate calories. High energy diets, such as lush spring grass or abundant, rich mare’s milk, accompanied by insufficient minerals, are the main cause of nutritionrelated growth problems, stimulating the foal to grow quickly yet not supplying the nutritional building blocks for development. Foal Assist was developed to help provide these nutrients and is available in an easy-to-use syringe or highly palatable liquid.

The Benefits of Mounting a Sustained PR Campaign A successful PR campaign can only be a success if you know what you want to achieve for your brand.
I
n today’s modern world, there are many channels available that allow you to promote your brand, but these channels have to be relevant, both for your business and its customer base. As such, a number of factors have to be considered when deploying a PR campaign.
Creating a Smart PR Strategy
Like many industries, those looking to create a PR campaign could be dissuaded due to the conflicting information that can be found online. Some sources may state that a prolonged PR campaign is the most important, whereas others may state that a one-off low-cost solution is more suitable. The truth is that PR campaigns, as opposed to a one-off press release, create enhanced awareness for a brand, and you only get out what you put in. Like personal relationships, business relationships can take time to fully develop, and there will be a number of changes in the way connections to customers are
made along the way. A one-off solution may provide you and your business with a press release for a relatively low fee, but the low fee also means that you’re not getting the value and experience associated with PR companies that offer a fully-inclusive service that covers all sectors and disciplines. The message you want to put out to consumers may be very different to that you want to communicate to the trade. In the same vein, the messaging to the dressage sector might be significantly different to the endurance one, or the Pony Club. If you wanted a horse to have a glossy coat, you wouldn’t feed it well for a month and then stop. You would make sure you chose the right feed and kept the diet going to maintain the quality of the coat.
Controlling and timing of the message
Regardless of how much time is spent perfecting a press release, if it isn’t timed correctly and directed appropriately, it could

fail to hit its proposed target. When opting for a one-off press release, you may well get a service that bears some fruit in relation to reaching a new demographic of potential customers, but it will only deliver this message over a very short period of time. However, it does highlight the benefits of considering a PR company that is more adapted to sustained PR campaigns and one that knows the industry, its sectors, its different disciplines and its idiosyncrasies inside and out. True, it is likely to cost the business more initially, but the cost includes the controlling and timing of spreading your message across a number of relative channels over a period of time that’s deemed relevant. It’s all about the bottom line and return on investment and experienced PR companies are only too well aware that their activity needs to bear fruit.
Making and building contacts
As PR campaigns are centred around communication, it should come as no surprise that having established relationships with professionals such as journalists and editors will offer a number of rewards. A sustained PR campaign allows a number of relationships to flourish as time goes on, which allows a brand to grow as a result and gain an
authoritative edge. There’s also the making of new contacts to consider. While a one-off solution can ensure that contacts are made with people such as journalists, it is probable that this communication will be

opportunities through a PR company that the media knows and trusts to deliver suitable material for its customers, in the correct manner and to deadline.
A Sustained PR campaign covers more angles
You only have to go online to get an idea of how far the modern world is developing. A number of companies now have to ensure their online efforts are inline to ensure any message or content on offer is relevant to its audience. A one-off solution can convey a message with relative ease, but it’s likely to be carried out in a very generic way. It does mean that a business could miss out on a number of opportunities to help deliver the message in new and unique ways that simply can’t be done with a one-off solution. Examples include: ❚ Press releases that cover exciting new product launches ❚ Celebrating any important landmarks, such
as an anniversary ❚ Offering an opinion on a relative news article ❚ Promoting opinion on developments within the sector ❚ Offering content that resolves a customer’s problem This is only the tip of the iceberg, and becoming engaged in a more prolonged PR campaign will allow your business to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise, thus helping to promote your message in unique ways and reaching a larger demographic of customers as a result.
What solution should you opt for?
This is a decision only you can make. In some instances, a one-off solution may be completely viable, but this is why it’s important to determine goals for the PR campaign from the outset. If you are looking to create a small noise, to a small audience, in a short amount of time, then a one-off solution may be absolutely fine.
“it is probable that this communication will be stopped once your press release has fallen off the conveyor belt” However, it’s important not to make decisions in relation to price alone, because you may find that additional services cost an additional fee, and these fees could mount up if you aren’t fully aware of what’s required to get your message delivered. A more sustained PR campaign means that your company’s message is being delivered over a
longer period of time, to the right kind of audience. It will also receive additional promotion via channels not available with other solutions, such as social media. Evidently, a prolonged PR campaign can mean a great deal of work, work that may be too cumbersome for a business that has to focus its attention on a number of different departments. However, employing the service of a PR company that has a wealth of experience with sustained PR campaigns to your target market not only frees up valuable internal resources, but instils confidence that your next PR campaign will be a success too!

Flexible dosing from Virbac Equimax and Eraquell provide proven and trusted product efficacy, offering flexible dosing options. Virbac offers you unrivalled help and support, providing information to help you plan a more targeted, strategic worming programme for your customers through the 3D Worming approach. Many factors contribute to the effectiveness of a worming regime including timing, product selection and rotation. While spectrum of activity and safety
are the key drivers behind the choice of product, its formulation is also important. A 2009 study* showed that anthelmintics delivered in tablet form actually induced less stress compared to those delivered in a paste formulation. Uniquely, Virbac offers flexible dosing options with Equimax and Eraquell ranges available both in syringe and tablet form. Yard Packs (48 syringes) are ideal for larger yards and studs with each syringe easily accessible without the additional outer blister to reduce waste. Both Equimax and Eraquell syringes treat up 700kg bodyweight. TABS are presented in individual tubes of eight tablets. With a dose rate of one tablet per 100kg, each tube will treat 800kg – the largest dose wormer currently on the market. This makes it easy for horse owners to calculate how many tablets are required for their horse or pony. The appleflavoured tablets can be added to a small feed, making them ideal for horses that are syringe or head shy and helping to reduce the risk of
spit out. Avoiding spit out is one factor that we have control over to ensure correct dosing and thus help minimise the onset of resistance. TABS are also helpful for owners with small ponies as unused tablets may be kept for up to a year in cool conditions away from direct sunlight. Both Equimax and Eraquell are suitable for mares in foal throughout gestation, lactating mares and breeding stallions. Equimax can be used in foals from two weeks of age and Eraquell in foals from six weeks of age. * Multi-Centric Controlled Radomised Field Clinical Trial to Evaluate & Compare the Stress Response induced in Horses administered Endoparasitcides in Tablet or Paste Formulations. There’s also plenty of equestrian experience on hand with Web Editor Victoria Spicer and Head of Ad Sales Nicky Green both having come from Horse & Hound whilst Presenter Jenny Rudall was formerly Head Instructor at Wimbledon Village Stables. H&C was named Best Specialist Channel 2011 in the UK’s prestigious Broadcast Digital Awards, and has been repeatedly shortlisted in this and other categories. The nominations for 2016 have recently been announced and H&C is in the running for two awards – Best Specialist Channel and Best Factual Channel. In the latter category their fellow nominees are BBC Three, BBC Four, Discovery, Sky News and History. Good company to be keeping. Such recognition stands to reason: a business that mainly derives its income from advertising revenue better be good – or face the consequences!
As a measure of success, Horse and Country TV is climbing higher and higher, winning the plaudits and recommendations of advertisers. Taking a glimpse at what’s on offer, enthusiasm for the product is easy to understand. In April this year H&C launched a new reality show – the Blue Chip All Star Academy. The premiere of the Blue Chip All Star Academy is on H&C on Sunday 12th June – expect record audience ratings. Speaking of which – H&C’s audience is measured by BARB– Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (which also measures the likes of East Enders) which produced an average quarterly viewing figure for 2015 of 851,000 unique individuals. “Marketing gurus don’t throw money away these days and the fact the H&C is making such an impression says it all” that, “H&C is an excellent platform for us to communicate our message to a captive audience.” The fact that H&C offers marketers a number of options from which to choose – Spot Advertising, Sponsorship and Digital – assists both parties in building a long-term relationship. The stats that apply to audience samples are impressive – 58% spend at least £200 per month
on their horses and their riding while 21% spend more than £500. Audience feedback indicates how people become hooked: 37% watch every day! 88% at least a couple of times a week. 40% watch during the daytime. Other stats indicate age ranges - 21% of viewers are under 16; 21% 16-25; 26% 26-44; 18% 45-54 and 14% 55-plus. Audiences are massively equestrian and largely female which means that advertising on H&C gives brands access to the power of TV at the same time as reaching a very targeted audience or, put another way, money is arguably well spent. And it is a fact that viewers of niche channels are absorbed in the ads because they involve a subject of genuine interest. Interestingly, horses are very popular with the 55-plus age range who make up fair numbers of spectators at major events - and spend a lot of money in the ‘shops’. Perhaps there is opportunity to increase their viewing hours? However ‘good’, however ‘successful’, there is always room for improvement – in everything!

Saddle Pads and Saddle Accessories Saddle pads and numnahs can do a grand job – or they can be a problem! It is as simple as this: the best designs, beautifully executed in excellent materials can do nothing but harm if they are not fitted correctly.
T
he majority of horse owners understand the importance of ensuring their horse is equipped with a correctly fitting saddle – after all, it is fundamental to the horse’s welfare and success. Why is it, then, that they do not similarly understand that ‘something under the saddle’ must correspond to the shape and size of the saddle? Why do horse owners pop along to their retailer to buy a numnah or saddle cloth but fail to take their saddle with them? Do they really believe in ‘fit all’ – despite the advice of their retailer? No wonder the edge of so many numnahs stops short of the saddle -- possibly resulting in a pressure point? What about the numnah that is too large, wrinkles up and/or is dislodged? What about equipment that is bought off the internet, through Ebay or from an advertisement on a board Saddlery accessories such as because it appears to offer a seat savers are increasing in bargain? One of the most important rules of saddle fitting relates to the even distribution of pressure across as wide an area as possible of the horse’s back. This is fundamental and anything that interferes adversely with this distribution will impact and create pressure points. This certainly applies to an illfitting saddlecloth or pad.

Discussions about the use of numnahs must include Western saddles because, according to Katja Geser von Peinen – clinical advisor in Sports Medicine in Zurich - even the best fitting Western saddle needs a numnah. It simply isn’t designed to be used without some form of cushioning. Most owners buy a new girth when they buy a new saddle – in which case the qualified saddle fitter will ensure the girth is
suitable for the saddle/horse combination. When the owner decides to retain an existing girth it is important to check out its suitability. Assumptions can result in problems. There are some absolutely stunning saddle bags and packs on the market, so much so that the variety of uses, design and materials can be overwhelming. Is the bag required to hold full-on camping equipment - a sandwich for lunch - or something in between? Customers who are confused will benefit from help selecting the one that will best fulfil their particular needs. Horse owners who treasure their saddlery and take care of it want to travel their equipment to and from shows and other events in custom-made bags and containers to reduce the possibilities of damage. They
“Is it ‘cheap’ when it is unsuitable and likely to do more damage than good?” also want to maintain the tack in immaculately clean order. Bridle and saddle covers are especially useful and, rather like luggage at the airport, coordinated bags and containers are very popular. Coining a phrase, keeping everything tidy and tackroom shape might extend into containers for blankets and bandages. (The same owners may well like to equip themselves with a jacket cover, hat cover, a boot cover – and so on?) When buying any of this equipment the best advice the retailer can offer is ‘take advice’!

JHL Pro-Steel Flexible Stirrups
Pressure tests prove the HRP Pressure Relief WING Saddle Pad exerts NO pressure on the horse behind the saddle, over the lumbar spinous processes and significantly less mean pressure in all gaits when compared to conventional saddle pads. There are different designs for each equestrian discipline, all with a striking visual appearance. The Mono WING saddle pad should be used without a half pad/fluff as it’s shaped to sit up into the gullet of the saddle, off the horse’s spine.
These stainless steel stirrups have rubber covered links on either side that provide good flexion, allowing the rider’s heel to drop more easily into the correct position with reduced pressure and jarring on the joints. JHL Flexible Stirrups are supplied with grip treads.

Ready to Ride Girth & Slip On Stud Guard
HiWither Half Wool Saddlepad with Front Collar
The Ready to Ride collection has been specially formulated to be 100% ride ready straight from the package. The rich leather has been tanned and pre-treated using a special unemulsified oil which penetrates deep into the leather - meaning this leatherwork oils itself. The Ready to Ride leatherwork is exceptionally resistant to cracks and blemishes, keeping the leather looking in tip top condition for much longer, as well as making it super easy to clean! The girth can be used as a normal girth, or you can use the slip-on stud guard for additional protection.
New to NuuMed’s quality British made collection, this style has the well known HiWither cut, which removes pressure from across the withers and behind the saddle. It’s made using high quality quilt and has a British half wool lining across key pressure points including the front, to create a collar. Wool has many properties including the ability to absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture so is less likely to cause any type of skin reaction as it’s a natural fibre.

ken lyndon-dykes
Helping Holism take Hold This month Ken takes a look at the vital role retailers play in influencing the buying public and unites with the campaign for joined-up thinking when it comes to horse health and performance. The May edition of Equestrian Business included pleas to retailers and others in the equestrian industry to practise holism themselves – and encourage others – trainers, Instructors, vets, therapists, nutritionists, saddle-fitters, horse owners – to do so too. The equestrian world has examined ‘problems’ and ‘topics’ in isolation for far, far – far - too long and I congratulate Equestrian Business for grasping the nettle and challenging the equestrian industry to do something about it. We have to move onwards and upwards and not allow our heads to continue to be suffocated by dogma and outmoded philosophies! I think it is very likely that retailers don’t realise how much influence they have on the horse-owning public. There are roughly three million horses in this country which is a sure indication that retailers have opportunity to change misunderstandings and misconceptions that often adversely impact on all aspects of equestrianism. Taking the subject of saddle fitting as an example. A few
years’ back we made massive advances and the importance of horses being equipped with a well-fitting saddle was widely understood and, furthermore, put into practise. Today horse owners are persuaded - often by social media and spurious advertising - to regard price as the most salient factor. Of course, price has always been an important part of the equation but it was not the top priority; the excellence of the service was by far the most significant factor. That continues today and it is our duty to ensure horse owners understand their obligations in regard to the
Bear in mind that:
❚ A crooked rider makes a crooked saddle makes a crooked horse. ❚ A crooked horse makes a crooked rider makes a crooked saddle. ❚ A crooked saddle makes a crooked horse makes a crooked rider.

welfare of horses. A correctly fitting saddle is fundamental to equine wellbeing. Concentration on price is resulting in saddle-fitting becoming isolated - seen as a separate entity unrelated to other important areas of equine management. Consequently, we are not getting closer to an holistic approach, it is further away. The role of the rider, which is fundamental, is overlooked. If we don’t practise holism, how can we identify and deal with the multiple problems associated with ‘crookedness’? Another feature in this edition deals with hoof and leg care. If the hoof is ‘unbalanced’, the leg will suffer. If there is a ‘problem’ with a leg, the hoof (foot) will suffer. A problem with a foot (hoof) that is not dealt with appropriately will inevitably impact on a limb. Gait irregularities will result and these will impact on the efficacy of the saddle-fit. The saddle may sit lop-sided, it may ‘bounce’, it may be pushed forwards – or backwards. Another area which demands a far more holistic approach relates to the way the rider’s position influences the saddle:
KEN LYNDON-DYKES ❚ Ex-international level three-day-event rider. ❚ Qualified Society of Master Saddlers’ saddle fitter and a member of the society’s executive committee, ❚ Owns and runs SaddleWorld, one of the largest saddle retailers in the UK. Ken is increasingly in demand as a professional witness and adjudicator in reation to saddlery-related claims and disputes. ❚ He is also well-known as an inspirational and interesting lecturer/speaker. Riding is a balance sport and acquiring an independent seat takes time. Remaining in the centre of the horse’s movement is something that can only be achieved when the rider is supple. A crooked rider makes a crooked saddle makes a crooked horse! The rider who sits to one side will cause the saddle to slip in the direction in which the greater part of the weight is distributed. The rider who falls behind the movement will create pressure points under the back of the saddle and, in severe cases, the degree of soreness will increase rapidly, the horse will be unable to use his back correctly, will fail to engage and eventually the animal will cease to go forward and become nappy. ‘Gripping’ and ‘grinding’ are usually associated with riders who try too hard – or riders who are forced beyond their current capabilities. Let us join the Equestrian Business CHALLENGE and make our services more ‘holistic’! Let us all work together to achieve the best possible results for all concerned.

More than half of Brits want a bank holiday revamp
Removing public holidays could save the economy £19 billion
Over half of the UK would say ‘yes’ to a review of the current bank holiday schedule, studies have shown. The survey, conducted by virtual assistant specialists ava, has revealed that 51% of UK residents are unhappy with the number of public holidays in Britain and how they slot into the calendar.
T
he origins of the bank holiday were simple – to give the working classes (and bank workers) additional time off to rest from their rigorous jobs. Founded by Sir John Lubbock, Liberal MP and banker in 1871, it was also seen as a way of repaying the national debt. However, some banks – most notably RBS and Natwest – recently removed bank holiday Mondays from their opening times. Seen as a way of keeping up with the demands of the modern consumer, the scheduling of bank holidays can also be perceived as a shrewd way of enticing more potential customers through shop doors – especially those who would usually be restricted by work demands. While public holidays clearly benefit retailers, for the wider economy it’s a totally different story. According to statistics from the Centre for Economics and Business Research in 2012, each bank holiday costs the country £2.3 billion in lost productivity. Removing public holidays, meanwhile, could save £19 billion.
In terms of small businesses, the impact of bank holidays depends on the type of company they are. Many independent enterprises – such as pubs, restaurants, hotels and retailers – account for 15% of bank holiday profits. Whilst the hospitality industry benefits from the increase in trade, more industrial businesses tend to be hit the hardest. Founder of the CEBR, Douglas McWilliams, said in 2012: “About 45% of the economy suffers; the offices, the factories, the building sites where people tend not to go to work on bank holiday.” Any potential changes could also impact upon the school holiday system. Another recent survey by ava discovered that 53% of the population would approve of a rejigged school holiday schedule – with many firmly against the existing staggered setup that differs from town-to-town across England and Wales.

holidays throughout the year, it’s clear from our research thus far, that business owners wouldn’t necessarily agree. However, the situation could be much worse for British enterprises. As the chart – from Mercer – shows, other countries have far more public holidays. With only eight extra days per year, England and Wales fall staggeringly behind other nations. Spain – the number one choice for holidaying Brits – has almost double the annual holidays that we have, with 14 each year. But that’s nothing compared to India and Colombia, whose residents enjoy a huge 18 additional days of annual leave.
Is it time to change?
It’s not only the amount of public holidays the UK has that leaves workers disgruntled. The current schedule is, arguably, very unbalanced. May has two dates (following two days in Easter, which usually falls in March or April), August has one – and then there’s a huge wait until the next break at Christmas time. There have been calls in the
past to move the first May bank holiday, with a proposed ‘UK Day’ in October to celebrate Britain’s military history instead. Lucie Greenwood, sales manager at ava, said that the first half of the year tends to be top-heavy with bank holidays and many small business owners would find it easier to schedule work if public holidays were spread out a little more evenly across the year. “It doesn’t seem to make much sense to have so many public holidays crammed into the space of two months,” she commented. “Losing two days of trade – as is the case in May – can put added strain on many businesses. By moving one of the dates to later in the year, it not only eases the pressure on these firms – but gives the British workforce an extra break in the second half of the year. “We’re seeing an increasing number of businesses scrapping some bank holidays altogether – instead giving their staff the extra days off in lieu. While this might not work for every company, it does give businesses more options and is a far less restrictive system.”
