Welcome to the second edition of Lifestyles, the magazine highlighting some of the best properties for sale in the wonderfully diverse counties of Norfolk and North Suffolk. The market conditions since Easter have been very encouraging indeed and the outlook is one of quiet confidence. A marketplace which had been starved of fresh property becoming available very early on in the new year has been replenished with a healthy number of sensibly priced homes, causing those prospective homes movers who had been sitting on their hands and waiting to start becoming active. Cameron Black, Fine & Country
The effect of this has been to re-adjust. The market had previously moved quite quickly from being a buyer’s market back to a seller’s market with scarce availability, but it has now settled to a more balanced situation overall. We have potential buyers from all over the London and Greater London area who now see Norfolk and North Suffolk as a hugely desirable place to combine the rural dream with their City based careers and they are out looking now. So if you have lived the dream in your home and feel the time is right for someone else to take it over, call us now and see your home on these pages in the next edition. How to store a valuable wine collection at home F
Practical advice from Hugo Rose, Master of Wine,The Colchester Wine Company
ew homes are able to boast a wine cellar these days, so here are a few pointers to help you keep your wines in tip-top condition until the moment you want to draw the cork.
The basics
If there is one thing that must be right it is temperature. Excessive heat can quickly spoil good wine and it needs to be kept in a cool environment to avoid damage. The ideal is considered to be between 10˚C minimum and 20˚C maximum. The temperature doesn’t need to be constant, and allowing a gradual change between summer and winter will keep energy costs - and carbon footprints - to a minimum. The best chateaux in Bordeaux have always permitted seasonal variation in their cellar temperatures, so you can rest assured that you are in good company. After temperature comes sunlight and vibration – both to be avoided if at all possible. Direct sunlight is likely to cause heat spikes, and some wines, notably champagne, undergo chemical changes when exposed to the sun.
Being practical
Having identified a cool corner of the house or an outbuilding for your collection, probably against a north rather than a south-facing wall, it makes sense to keep a check on the temperature during the year. Sophisticated monitoring devices are available, including web-enabled systems which will alert you to ‘rogue’ temperature readings wherever you 20
are in the world. However, in our relatively stable environment a greenhouse thermometer is usually sufficient. The challenge is to protect your valuable wines from bursts of heat, such as the summer heatwaves we experienced a couple of years ago. Some degree of insulation helps here – it takes several hours for wine inside a bottle to heat up in response to a temperature surge, and longer still if inside a wooden case – but you must take care to avoid trapping the heat in. Air conditioning is the most secure protection, but fan-assisted ventilation can be a close second in removing heat from an over-warm cellar.
Bespoke solutions
A purpose built wine cellar is an asset to any property, not just for its looks and ambience but also because an architect can design-in the necessary temperature protection. Specialist companies can fit out the cellar with racking in attractive woods too altogether a fine solution. Another option is a spiral cellar, effectively an insulated hole in the ground with an integrated staircase built into the walls. Spiral cellars are fitted with a discreet trap door and can be installed in the floor of a kitchen, den or outbuilding. The Colchester Wine Company will be happy to offer suggestions and informal advice on wine storage, and provide supplier details for all aspects of cellar creation.

Naturediet Delivers Quality Pet Food Naturediet is a proudly British company providing top quality, natural pet food that dogs love. Grounded in careful research and extensive knowledge picked up from over 30 years of pet food manufacture, Naturediet provides the best possible nutrition for dogs. The range is manufactured in a bespoke and innovative factory in the heart of rural Norfolk. All recipes have been nutritionally analysed to make sure they contain the correct balance of nutrients to keep dogs healthy. Naturediet believes in high quality, all natural ingredients and honest and transparent labelling, to ensure you have all the information you need to make the right decision for your dog.
The philosophy
Until now, dogs’ diets have undergone little scrutiny. As humans, we have long since accepted that ‘we are what we eat’, so by the same token ‘our pets are what we feed them.’ With this principle at the core of the Naturediet range, each food variety provides absolutely no artificial additives, preservatives or colourings, just good, wholesome food. Naturediet campaigns for clearer labelling and more natural ingredients for all pet food. Managing director Daniel Masters believes that “Pet food science has advanced to induce
42
pets to eat ingredients that they would never normally eat. Much commercial pet food contains flavour enhancers, colourings and preservatives. Many ingredients are subjected to torturously high temperatures and then ‘fortified’ with vitamins and minerals,” he explains. In addition, many Veterinary Surgeons now believe that poor quality or unnatural diets may be contributing to many of the new diseases affecting dogs today. Naturediet’s own range is completely transparent – it consists of real, wholesome food made with real, high quality, natural ingredients. Naturediet prides itself not only on the ingredients it uses throughout the range, but also on its clear labelling and honest advice.“We know that pet owners want the best for their animals, but without the correct information this can be difficult to achieve,” Daniel concludes.
those with special requirements. Each product contains a minimum of 60% real meat, except the Senior/Lite menu, which contains a higher vegetable content to cater for the dog’s needs. All Naturediet menus are certified holistic and 100% gluten free, perfect for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Naturediet is all about ‘affordable quality’, as the cost of the food is the biggest indicator of the quality of ingredients used: Naturediet produces quality food, in the UK, at the most affordable price.

Keep your animals safe M
any people dream of the ‘good life’ and this can easily be achieved with even a small piece of land. A property in the country provides a great opportunity to get stuck in to the smallholder lifestyle and there are a few basic items required to get you started. Local livestock equipment supplier Farmbits Direct Limited explains what is available. When branching out into smallholding, chickens can be a good place to begin and healthy chickens need a good shelter. When it comes to chicken runs and poultry houses there is a variety to choose from and they come in a range of materials, including classic wood and more modern recycled plastic. A hen house is a vital piece of equipment for any chicken keeper, as it provides allimportant shelter from predators as well as protection from inclement weather and a place to lay eggs. Forsham Cottage Arks is one company striving to provide comfort and luxury for a whole range of animals and Norfolk based Farmbits Direct stocks a wide range of these wooden animal runs and chicken houses.

All these products are well made and incredibly practical, as well as being aesthetically pleasing and when accompanied by the good advice of Farmbits, you can’t go wrong! For those keen to go green, Solway Recycling Limited has an ingenious scheme whereby it collects old plastics, recycles the material and turns it into a range of products including animal shelters and the Eco Hen House. Garden trends This winter has been one of the worst on record with the coldest January in the UK since 1987 and eighth coldest from a series of records dating back to 1914. Whilst the impact may be devastating to a mature garden or a setback to a young garden, now is a great time to re-consider the space you have around you and look at re-designing your garden. Whether you live in rural Norfolk or in one of the many towns within Norfolk, now is the perfect time to take a hard look at your garden and decide how to improve it to enjoy for the ‘balmy’ summer we are still expecting! Coupled with a steady increase in the interest in gardens and gardening, it would seem that this is a wise area to invest in. This interest has been bolstered by the ‘grow your own’ campaigns run by many garden centres and through the media re-engaging people with their gardens and the notion of 60
gardening for their own health and wellbeing. So what are the trends for the garden in 2010? Well garden trends are not always easy to predict, much of what we glean comes from the media and also the greatest show on earth – the Chelsea Flower Show. Over the last few years a modernist movement has been building following on from a unique designer based in London, Luciano Giubbilei, who exhibited for the first time at Chelsea last year. His work
is very minimalist and architectural where great emphasis is placed on the precision, quality and perfection of the materials and their installation. Planting is simple, yet structural, with great and dramatic effect and almost treated in the same manner as the materials used to construct the terraces and hard structures. The pallete is again simple, clipped box, yew and hornbeam (usually pleached) to provide a very structured and manicured look, a piece

of art. It was once said that his gardens were at their best on the day they were finished. This works well in London and for the clients this work attracts. Yet over the last few years his style has been working its way in to everyday design and now finds itself moving to Norfolk. But for our rural environment the skill is adapting this style/mood/trend to bring the best elements of strong urban design to rural gardens, creating a stunning juxtaposition between urban chic and rural charm. Get it right and a great garden develops, get it wrong and you might as well put stone cladding on a 15th Century thatched cottage! This style will not suit all and for most people a garden that sits comfortably with its surroundings, is in harmony with its owners, the aesthetics of the vernacular and provides year round interest will tick the boxes. Increasing in popularity, perhaps again media driven, is the desire to be in balance with the environment. Gardens allow this to happen, even more so now with the increasing availability of “Eco” products. The biggest of these is rain water and grey water harvesting where water is collected off your house roof and that of any outbuildings, as well as bath water in large tanks buried underground. A series of filters clean the water so that it can be re-used to irrigate your garden. After last summer this is a trend I can see growing given the propensity for dry summers. With money being tight, investments static and low interest rate returns, actually an investment in your garden could appreciate in the longer term, as a good garden will add value to your property. Therefore ensure you invest wisely by employing a professional garden designer, who will be able to develop the smallest of gardens to maximise the space available or a rural landscape to bring a touch of flair and urban chic where required. What Goes In, Comes Out! O
ne advantage of keeping free range hens and other poultry, is that they have plenty of room to scratch about looking for food. Insects, seeds, and young green shoots will all contribute towards a healthy diet, but to ensure that the bird receives everything it needs, then additional feed will be required. Norfolk based company the Smallholder Range explains more about choosing the right feed for your hens.
Whilst it is certainly possible to feed poultry a diet consisting entirely of wheat or mixed corn, this will not provide birds with all the essential nutrients in the correct balance to suit the bird's particular stage of life. The advantage of feeding a complete or compound feed is that all the work of calculating the best combination of quality ingredients to provide a natural, healthy diet, which fulfils the bird's nutritional requirements, has been done for you. For the
poultry keeper, this means that you can feed your birds confidently, in the knowledge that you will be providing them with everything necessary for a healthy and productive life, but in a form which is convenient and easy to use. These feeds are readily available to suit chicks, growing birds, breeding birds and layers, and depending on the purpose may be available as crumbs, pellets or meal.
An egg for breakfast
For many, one of the biggest joys of keeping chickens is the eggs that they produce, and there is nothing quite like a freshly laid egg for breakfast! When it comes to layers, you really do get out what you put in, and therefore a good quality complete feed is important for top quality and tasty eggs. A good layers pellet will contain all the vitamins, minerals (including calcium) and natural ingredients needed for a good-sized egg with a natural golden yolk colour.
Variety is the key
Whether you’re a seasoned smallholder or just starting out, poultry may just be the beginning of your animal collection. The Smallholder Range caters for a variety of animals including pigs, cattle, goats and sheep. All these feeds are made to a high quality and do not include any GM ingredients, growth promoters or medicinal additives. For more information on the Smallholder Range products or advice on feeding please call 01362 822902 or visit www.smallholderfeed.co.uk. If you would like to join the Smallholder Club for free call and quote SMR08 or go online and sign up. 72

Equestrian Perfection
With acres of rolling fields, farmland as far as the eye can see and world class equestrian events year round, Norfolk and North Suffolk is an area of equestrian excellence. There is something about Norfolk and Suffolk that lends itself to equestrianism, and Fine & Country’s Equine Consultant, John Davey FNAEA, thinks he knows the answer.
T
he Norfolk and Suffolk area is teaming with horses. With acres of excellent pastureland and affordable prices, these counties offer superb opportunities for those passionate about these noble beasts. For many, keeping their horses at home is a pipe dream, but with equestrian properties becoming ever more affordable, many are now able to take that leap.
35 years’ experience in the sale of period, country and equestrian properties has taught me a thing or two. I know what equestrian homebuyers are looking for and it is a potent mix of country residence, flexible outbuildings and well-fenced paddocks. Although these can be made, there are still those homebuyers that want to buy the dream, and at the moment there is plenty of choice out there. From studs with 40 stables to a back garden shelter, the variety of equestrian properties available is amazing.
then the Norfolk and Suffolk county shows provide a great showcase for some top-class showjumping and showing.
One of the newest venues in the area is the recently built £5 million equestrian centre at Easton College in Norwich. Combining world-class facilities with renowned educational courses, this is one college that’s going to the top of the class. For those wanting to sell their equestrian home, rest assured that this area of the market is rock solid. Demand for property with land remains exceptionally high and the Norfolk and North Suffolk areas provide the perfect country lifestyle, so get in touch with us to see how we

Look After Your Corner of England Many people dream of owning a small piece of England on which to put their very own horse, but once this dream has come true, there could be a lot of hard work ahead to keep this land in great condition. Colin Debenham from Terra-Vac explains how his ingenious machines make light work of paddock maintenance.
P
asture plays a major part in equine husbandry and welfare, and if you manage your land efficiently you can lower production costs, improve aesthetics, promote a healthier environment and provide substantial feed and recreation for your horses. Just one acre per horse can provide much of its maintenance for most of the year if managed correctly.
Manure management Picking up droppings is a daily chore, but if you find you’re short of time then it is a job that often gets left. Piles of droppings will quickly build up and cause sick areas of grass that horses won’t want to graze, encouraging weeds. Manure is also a health hazard as it increases the spread of worms amongst horses.
In smaller paddocks of only a couple of acres, manure can easily be removed by hand if the time is taken to do it regularly. For large areas of land, manure management is a far more difficult and time-consuming job. One method is to leave the manure in situ and harrow the fields regularly. Although harrowing is good for the grass, during the time the manure is left on the land it could easily encourage the spread of worms or cause the grass beneath to sicken. The best option is to remove the manure from even large fields using a machine designed specifically for the job. The Colt from Terra-Vac is a compact machine that can be towed by a tractor, 4X4 or quad bike, and makes light work of paddock maintenance. Providing easy access to open spaces and fast, efficient manure removal, a machine such as this will save so much time that the investment will quickly be returned.
Thorough cleaning Cleaning paddocks is not just about manure – branches, stones, weeds and litter can also be a problem. When undertaking your regular field checks, make sure you remove all debris from the field, helping the grass to remain healthy and preventing the horse injuring itself. Once again, there are useful machines to help with this. Paddock sweepers are highly versatile machines that fulfil a number of roles. Firstly, they pick up manure by sweeping it into a large hydraulic hopper. Secondly, they sweep away any debris from the surface of the field, leaving a safe environment for the horse. Thirdly, paddock sweepers help to keep grass healthy by removing weeds and scarifying moss, providing space, light and air for the grass to grow. So, if you want beautiful paddocks to go with your luxury property and lifestyle, try TerraVac’s pasture management machines for an easier life!
