AUGUST 21, 2017

It’s a new day, so bring on the new football coaches By J. Patrick Eaken, Mark Griffin, Yaneek Smith and Jeffrey D. Norwalk Three Eastern Maumee Bay prep football teams, Eastwood, Gibsonburg, and Genoa qualified for the playoffs one year ago, but only Eastwood got into the second round, defeating Marion Pleasant. Area gridiron fans can brag about their teams making the playoffs, but they can’t brag about much more until those same teams reach at least the second level, or, shall we say it, perhaps a regional quarterfinal, state semifinal, or even state championship game appearance. Hasn’t happened in these parts in quite a few years, but it has happened. Hoping to make those kinds of dreams happen for our area schools are four new football coaches, but they are guys who have either plenty of pedigree or plenty of experience. Since his coaching days under Saban and Pinkel, new Waite coach Kirk Heidelberg and his family have crossed North America and western Europe. From 2006-11, Heidelberg coached and was the athletic director at Rockford Christian High School in Illinois, located 90 miles northwest of Chicago, and led the Lions to the playoffs five times while going 40-14. Heidelberg returned to Germany for a year and then coached with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 2013 before heading back to Germany for three years and then returning to Northwest Ohio last year. During his time coaching in Europe, Heidelberg won three championships with two different teams. “I wanted to coach at Waite. It’s similar to Woodward. I’ve got a big heart for these kids and football is a great avenue for me to do some great things. It’s a great opportunity to work with kids. There are a lot of challenges. We’ve got very talented group, a good core,” Heidelberg said. First-year Cardinal Stritch football coach Bryan Dudash is convinced he’s landed at the right place. Dudash has been a coaching nomad the past several years, having served as the head coach at Danbury High School for three seasons and as an assistant coach at Gibsonburg in 2016. He also coached at Lakota for one season, and now his focus is rebuilding the Cardinals’ program. “I wanted to get back into head coaching and I was intrigued by the Stritch job

because they had so many athletes,” Dudash said. “I coached against Stritch (in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference) and I knew the talent they had and the passion of the parents. They treated everybody who came to their school well.” Dudash takes over a program that went 1-9 a year ago. He is the school’s seventh head coach since 2007, and the Cardinals have not had a winning season (8-2) since 2006, when they won the TAAC title under coach Tony Beier. The Cardinals scored a respectable 33.1 points per game last season. The problem was, they allowed 58 per game. “We need to improve our team toughness,” coach Bryan Dudash said. “We’ve been preaching toughness since our first team meeting. We’re talking mental toughness as much as physical toughness. I don’t care how explosive we are on offense, we can’t give up 58 points a game again. Coming full circle For new Clay coach John Galyas, part of his life has come full circle. Galyas was a 5-foot-10, 185-pound linebacker and offensive guard for the Clay Eagles before he graduated in 1985. For the past decade he served as an assistant football coach at his alma mater, and he was named the program’s new head coach over the winter, replacing Mike Lee. Galyas, 49, said he looks forward to making the Eagles’ football program strong again. Clay hasn’t had a winning season (73) since 2008 and the Eagles went 8-32 in four years under Lee, including 3-25 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. “We’ve tried to create lots of excitement in the program,” Galyas said. “Not just with kids but in the community and team building with kids. We try to be involved in the community as much as pos-

We did a one-day free football camp in April for youths and we were involved with Oregon Fest. We’re trying to create excitement at Clay High School and the community of Oregon.” The Eagles had a 53-man roster during the preseason, and Galyas said the players’ attitude has been “great.” “The kids have given us everything they have,” he said. “We’re extremely satisfied with the effort we’ve had, with their attitude. We’re starting to come together as a team. We have some skill-position guys we certainly think have the potential to be pretty good players. We spent a lot of time in the off-season with team-building activities — and not just football stuff — just to get them together and spend time together. We’re trying to create a family atmosphere and bring our kids closer together so they play for each other and for Clay High School.” Playing for his father had its ups and downs, but new Eastwood football coach Craig Rutherford said the positives far outweighed the negatives. Craig and his brother, Eric, who is two years younger, both starred for the Eagles under their coach/father, Jerry, who retired after a successful 2016 season. Eastwood finished 9-2, won a Northern Buckeye Conference championship and made the state playoffs for the 10th time in Rutherford’s 36 seasons at the helm. “I really enjoyed the time we had to be out on the field at practice,” Craig, 29,

Cardinal Stritch coach Bryan Dudash recalled. “He pushed me and my brother pretty hard. I remember thinking a lot of my friends didn’t get to spend a lot of time with their dads, and we get to be out there with him two to three hours a day. I enjoyed it. He trusted us and that allowed us to get closer.” The Eagles played a lot of juniors last season, when they won the Northern Buckeye Conference championship and beat Marion Pleasant in the playoffs. All of those juniors are now seniors, and fCraig Rutherford welcomes 10 returning players to the offense and seven on defense. The lone loss to graduation on offense was guard Tylor Tudor. “We have 18 seniors and these guys have played a lot of football,” Rutherford said. “A lot of them started as sophomores. We want to be a tough team. That’s what Eastwood football’s been built on. We want these guys to have a lot of fun. We enjoy working hard and we want to continue to compete at the highest level we can. Our guys push each other pretty hard, so I think we can do that.” “We’re pretty fast on defense and we get to the ball well,” Rutherford said. “With so many starters back, they understand where they fit into our defense pretty well.” (The football previews on the following pages are written by Press Sports Editor J. Patrick Eaken and contributing sportswriters Mark Griffin, Yaneek Smith and Jeffrey D. Norwalk.)

Woodmore-Northwood game brings back memories of old SLL By Yaneek Smith Press Contributing Writer news@presspublications.com Separated by just 14 miles via Route 51, it makes perfect sense that old Suburban Lakes League rivals Northwood and Woodmore would be playing each other again. This time, however, it’s a nonleague season opener. The two schools resumed playing one another last year with the Rangers winning, 42-28, as Trevor Mack was a force on the ground, running it 11 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow running back Gavin Fritz helped to pace the rushing attack as well, carrying the ball 10 times for 133 yards and two scores. D.J. Wellons caught four passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats and scored a defensive touchdown on a 35-yard fumble return while Donovan Reyes threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the highscoring affair. Now, they’re set to play each other to open the season again in what could be the second of many more games between the two. “Both of us were looking for a week one opponent. We’ve always had a good relationship with Woodmore, dating back to our time in the SLL. Geographically, competitively, financially, it made sense,” said Northwood coach Ken James. “We figured the teams would be pretty evenly matched, which they are. We were traveling to Defiance to play Ayersville, which was an hour and 20 minutes. This is a 20-minute drive, so it’s easier for the fans. We had a good rivalry when we were both back in the SLL. “I feel like it was a really good setup for both schools. We should get good crowds in both cases because people don’t have to travel very far. We’re excited about it — it’s a good game for both schools.” Woodmore on the schedule provides some stability for Northwood, which also plays Lemoyne Road rival Lake and

Rossford outside of the TAAC — three Northern Buckeye Conference schools to open the slate. Previously, the Rangers had to travel sometimes over an hour to play schools like Delphos Jefferson, Ayersville and HopewellLoudon. In the SLL, Woodmore won the Lou Bosh league five times, including four (1986, ‘95, ‘96, ‘97) during Northwood’s tenure in the conference. The Wildcats also made it to the playoffs four times in that span. The Rangers, meanwhile, shared the league title with Elmwood in 1991. Woodmore was in the SLL for its entire 40-year existence (1972-2011) while Northwood, which left the Lakeshore Conference in 1986, stayed in the SLL before leaving in 2000 for the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. The Rangers have enjoyed life in the TAAC, winning the league 10 times. Before playing against one another last year, the last time the teams had faced off was in 2000 when Northwood won, 28-20.

Northwood coach Ken James goes over strategy in preparation for a game with Ottawa Hills. (Press file photo by Don Thompson/Facebook.com/DNRSport) Woodmore coach Lou Bosh knows that his team is going to have a challenge facing the Rangers’ Wishbone attack. “That’s what makes that offense so tough — you’ve got to be disciplined, and how disciplined can you get kids to be in one week of practice? We were new to the game playing them last year, so (we) hadn’t seen that until last year. We’re going to have to be disciplined,” said Bosh. “Last year,

they controlled the line of scrimmage and were running it well. We’ve got to come up with some stops.” Woodmore, meanwhile, runs the Wing-T offense, but will employ other formations as well. “Lou’s a good, really experienced coach. It helps them having him back,” James said. “They are they’re going to be real mobile on offense, they always have good skill guys. Their ability to throw the ball is a concern for us. They run the spread and the Wing-T, so you’ve got to prepare for both offenses. It’s creates some issues. “One of the best ways to combat that is to be as efficient as we can be on offense — run the offense and protecting the ball is a huge part of the equation. The longer our defense is on the field, the more issues it creates.” Opening the season with a victory is important for any team, especially Woodmore and Northwood because they have a challenging non-conference slate. The Wildcats also face Toledo Christian and Oak Harbor before entering NBC play. “We said this last year, going into this week one, how critical this game is. To get a win in week one, for us, regardless of who it is, is a good jumpstart to get going and build that confidence,” said Bosh. “This is a big game, but every game is a big game. Our focus is doing the little things right and putting ourselves in a position to win the game.” The Wildcats had a rough go on defense last season, allowing 41.6 points per game. Needless to say, Bosh said improving on that side of the ball has been a priority. “That’s been our focus that, listen, we have got to stop the run,” Bosh said. “That’s where it starts. We have paid attention to that and emphasized that, and the kids understand that. To give us a chance to win the game, we’ve got to be able to do that. Hopefully, in our second year, we can get some things going.” (— Press sportswriter Mark Griffin contributed)

Cards start with new coach, fresh set of athletes Coach: Bryan Dudash, first year Last year: 1-9 (1-5, TAAC). Preview: Cardinal Stritch coach has one first year goal — to improve on last year's record. “We have been basic with installing our defense this summer to try and get the guys to play fast and with confidence. We have the talent to be very good this year, but we will need to have some luck in order to stay healthy.” Sophomore Andrew Enright has first dibs at replacing first-team All-Press quarterback Drew Staczek under center. Enright is a first-year player. “He’s athletic and he picked up (Stritch’s spread offense) pretty quickly,” Dudash said. “He is working hard and he wants to learn.” The Cardinals’ starting running back is senior Cam Webb, who will be backed up by freshman Travis Mattox. “Cam is more like a fullback,” Dudash said. “He has really good size – about 6-1 and 185 pounds – and he has good quickness and good strength. He’s really grabbed that spot this summer. We had a scrimmage (Aug. 8 against Mohawk) and Travis vaulted himself up the depth chart with the way he played and his physicality.” The top two receivers return from last year in senior Jeff Dunsmore and junior Paul Latz. Dunsmore caught 57 passes for 1,182 yards and 20 touchdowns, while Latz caught a school-record 60 passes for 807 yards and six touchdowns . “Jeff might be one of the top receivers in the area,” Dudash said. “He has worked hard on his game despite being an outstanding three-sport starter. Paul is one of the quickest players I have ever coached.” Senior Kyle Boehm will play the slot receiver position and sophomore Ben Dunsmore will see time at wide receiver. Senior Shaun Enright, who had 46 receptions for 738 yards and seven touchdowns last season, has moved from tight end to tackle. “We asked him if he would like to make a switch and he jumped at the chance,” Dudash said. “Shaun is big and physical

and he will do anything he can to help the team.” The line will consist of senior center Bryce Ketner, left tackle Noah Power, left guard Hunter Crippen, senior right guard Trey Quiroga and Enright. Crippen was a running back last season. Dudash said sophomores Gus Torres and Nathan Hill should also get playing time on the line. “Shaun and Bryce are two of the best leaders I have ever had,” Dudash said. “They instantly bought into the system, es-

pecially after being (with) their third head coach during their high school careers.” The defensive line includes Quiroga and Enright at end, and Ketner and Power at tackle. Gus Torres and freshman Joe Elam should also be in the mix, according to Dudash. The outside linebackers are Boehm and Webb, with Mattox and Andrew Enright playing backup roles. “Boehm and Webb are both athletic,” Dudash said. “They bring a physical nature

The cornerbacks are Ben Dunsmore and junior Paul Martin, with junior Dominick Woodby also seeing action there. Latz starts at free safety. “We want to be physical,” Dudash said. “We are really stressing that they’re aligned properly and in the right position, and that they are being physical and getting to the football. We don’t want guys loafing. We want them to get to the ball and give out some hits.” Dudash said the Cardinals had 31 players as of Aug. 9. “We have some very talented athletes,” he said. “One of the things that really excited me about taking the head coaching position at Cardinal Stritch was the athletic ability of the kids. After being around them for six months and working with them, I have found that the kids are passionate about finding the same success they have seen in basketball and baseball the last few years.”

Returning athletes seek to get Clay on track Coach: John Galyas, first year Last year: 3-7 (2-5 TRAC) Preview: Reese Wamer returns at quarterback after completing 109-of-216 passes for 1,482 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago. He also ran the ball 86 times for 313 yards and three touchdowns. “We have five quarterbacks and Reese has won the job,” Galyas said. “Our backup quarterback (senior H-back Dustin Aiton) also plays receiver for us. I like Reese’s overall athleticism and some of the intangibles he brings. He makes plays.” Clay’s top running backs are seniors Ryan Joldrichsen and Michael Hulka and junior Kyle Miller, who led last year’s running backs with 309 yards on 96 carries. “Kyle is a hard-nosed, downhill runner,” Galyas said. “Ryan’s more of our slasher and Michael is probably our most complete H-back. He’s able to block, carry the football and catch the football.” Junior Trey Reddick returns after hauling in a team-high 20 catches for 450 yards (22.5 average) and five touchdowns a year ago. He will be joined at receiver by senior Jack Winckowski and junior Jake Novak (18 catches, 311 yards, 2 TD) “Trey is explosive, that’s for sure,” Galyas said. “Jack is probably more of a possession receiver, and Jake is 6-foot-3 and can cause some match-up problems at slot receiver. We’d love to have somebody be a true tight end, but we don’t have that right now. Our freshmen do, so there’s help on the way. We’ll be in the pistol (formation) and try to run the ball.” The line consists of senior tackles Robert Nelson and Matt Reed, junior guards Josh Nagy and Jaylon Cathers, and senior center Devin Lunsford. Nelson, Nagy and Lunsford are returning starters. “The line brings some experience,” Galyas said. “Nagy and Lunsford aren’t real big, but they’re mobile and they’ll get moving a little bit in our offense.” The defensive line includes seniors Dominic Ketron and Nick Daly at tackle and junior Jared Rivera at nose guard. Senior Michael Nottage will also play on

If we want a bigger guy in there, we’ll move Daly in there.” Hulka returns at middle line backer and will be joined there by senior Walker Bliss and Lunsford, who played defensive end last season. Bo Szymczak, a senior, and either Miller or Bliss will get time at outside linebacker, depending on the defensive alignment. “We’re a 3-4 defense, so we certainly get our D-linemen moving with slants and angles and bringing pressure with our line-

backers,” Galyas said. “Michael Hulka is our most experienced linebacker and the leader of our defense. He’s a tough kid and he loves football. He’s played linebacker since his sophomore year and he has really good instincts.” The cornerbacks are junior Adam Ummel, a returning starter, and either Reddick, Wamer or junior Emilio Rendon. Aiton and Joldrichsen will start at safety, with juniors Luke Roach and Caleb Meinke also seeing action there. “We’ve had good competition at our defensive back position,” Galyas said. “There are a lot of them and they are competing.” Galyas said the Eagles are taking the

“He’s a little undersized for a linebacker,” Rutherford said, “but he reads the plays really well and finds ways to get to the football. Second-team all-conference pick Corey Coffman, who had four interceptions last year, returns at outside linebacker and will be joined at that spot by senior Josh McCauley. “Josh is just a really good athlete and he makes a lot of plays in space,” Rutherford said. Boos, who had five interceptions a year ago, returns at cornerback as a three-year starter. The other corner spot will be filled by either Pickerel, senior Cooper Comes or junior Gavin Slattman. Senior Alex Ross, a three-year starter, returns at safety.

The

Coach: Craig Rutherford, first year Last year: 10-2 (7-0 NBC) Preview: Senior quarterback Jake Pickerel returns to run Eastwood’s wing-T offense. Pickerel completed 63-of-128 passes for 938 yards and eight touchdowns last year, and also ran the ball 72 times for 370 yards and three touchdowns “He started some as a sophomore and he knows what we expect,” Rutherford said. “He can give me good information about what the defense is doing and that makes it easier to call plays. He knows what to look for and what our strengths are.” The Eagles return their top three running backs in seniors Ian Downard and Cade Boos and sophomore Jaden Rayford. Last year, Downard rushed 212 times for 1,130 yards (5.3 average) and 23 touchdowns. “He’s a really tough kid and he runs the ball really hard,” Rutherford said. “He wants to be a very good blocker as well. He’s a good teammate to have.” Rayford was a force as a freshman, carrying the ball 90 times for 807 yards (9.0 average) and six touchdowns. He had 13 receptions for 221 yards and two scores. Boos had 89 carries for 513 yards (5.8 average) and seven touchdowns. He also caught 31 passes for 467 yards and two TDs. “We hope Jaden has a pretty good year for us,” Rutherford said. “It’s hard to play varsity football as a freshman, but as year went on he picked up more and more. This year he understands the offense, so he’s way ahead of where he was at this point last year. Cade catches the ball really well out of the backfield and we’re able to do a few different things with him.” Senior Tyler Haas returns at split end, and senior Zach Henline at tight end. “Tyler works hard at everything he does,” Rutherford said. “He’s bigger and faster than he was a year ago and he had really good basketball and baseball seasons. He’s a good athlete and he’s a big target out there, probably 6-foot-5. There are some things we can do with him.” The offensive line returns senior left tackle Dalton Andrews, senior right tackle

Comets return a number of key playmakers Coach: Paul Patterson, fourth year Last Year: 7-4 (5-2 NBC) Preview: Patterson and the maroon-andgrey will have to replace key pieces to the puzzle, in the likes of first team All-Northern Buckeye Conference running back, second team All-NBC linebacker, team leading rusher, starting kicker and punter, and allaround weapon Matt Bradfield. The Comets must also replace AllOhio offensive and defensive lineman Matt Herrick, first team All-NBC linebacker Alex Hodulik and two-way starters Connor Chapinski and Caden Cruickshank. One player who will look to seamlessly snap into a leadership role is junior starting signal caller Jacob Plantz. He’s started at the quarterback position since he was a freshman. Last year, Plantz threw for 936 yards and nine touchdown strikes and run for four more while piling up 252 yards on the ground, making him a true dual threat for opposing defenses to account for. Further good news for Genoa's offense is that Plantz will be complemented by a whole brace of veteran weapons, including skill player Josiah Bradfield, a senior running back, who toted the rock for 575 yards and five scores a year ago to go along with 303 receiving yards and three TDs, earning second team All-NBC running back accolades. Also returning is senior Noah Edwards, an honorable mention All-NBC running back who garnered 612 rushing yards, and seven TDs. Joining them is junior first team All-NBC tight end Drew Bench, who had 296 yards receiving, while hauling in five scores last year. All hope to render Patterson’s multiple Wing T offense one of the most potent in the NBC. Much of that might depend on the offensive line, which in the initial weeks of the 2017 campaign could look like a work in progress for the Comets as the team tries to plug in replacements for the departures of three veteran linemen, including Herrick. Returning for Genoa in the trenches will be a pair of seniors in Kaleb Kuhlman and Hunter Simmons, who respectively gar-

nered second team and honorable mention All-NBC accolades last fall. On the defensive side of the ball, the Comets look to be fast, ball-hawking, and overall strong once again, as Patterson’s 5-3 Cover O-unit not only returns its en-

tire defensive backfield consisting of Josiah Bradfield (63 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, three interceptions, and a first team AllNBC accolade); Edwards (34 tackles, one pick); Plantz (30 tackles, three picks, second team All-NBC) and junior Jacob Bradfield.

There is also a pair of the league’s premier run stuffers in defensive end Bench (54 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, first team All-NBC) and tackle Simmons (48 tackles, six TFL, HM All-NBC), both of whom have exhibited the tenacity to get after opposing quarterbacks, having notched five and three sacks, respectively. in 2016. Bench was an Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press first team defensive end last year, and also earned first team at tight end. As for specialists, look for sophomore Sam Witt to take over both the kicking and punting duties in Bradfield’s wake this fall, as well as for dynamic return man Edwards (two punt returns for touchdowns in 2016).

Gibsonburg looks to build on winning season Coach: Steve Reser, eighth year Last Year: 8-3 (5-1 TAAC) Preview: It will be tough for Gibsonburg to repeat as TAAC champions in 2017, especially seeing as how the team is slated to bring back only nine total starters (four on offense, five on defense) and 18 letter winners. Still, for Reser and Gibsonburg, the expectations remain the same. "We've had a mixture of three senior classes. They've been really good and we're hoping to be decent (this) year. We're losing a lot of talent. The sophomores and juniors that played got experience, and we hope we get the guys to keep coming out and working hard," said Reser, who has compiled a 4131 record at Gibsonburg, including a 41-21 record since the Bears joined the TAAC. "This senior class was very talented. It's a special group to lose, but it's our job to get better and we hope to put a product on the field that remains successful. The expectations are very high, but we wouldn't want to have it any other way." This year, Reser will rely upon his junior class to take on a leadership role as seniors. That group, which includes Jaret Harrison, Paul Klosinski, Marciano Salazar, Joey Adkins, Nate Kissell, Tyler Lilley, Alex Dix and Andrew Kreais, will join with the likes of Weaver, Brady Jaso, Bradley Mendoza and Theo Hernandez to form the new group of upperclassmen. One player Reser is excited about watching grow into a contributor and team leader is sophomore quarterback Jon Auld, who will take over for recent graduate and signal caller Ryan Clark as a first-year starter running the team’s high-octane spread offense. Naturally, playing behind Clark on the depth chart in 2016 — Clark completed 120 of 233 passes, and threw for 1,784 yards and 15 scores as one of the top arms in local prep ball — Auld didn’t see much varsity action as a freshman and completed his only pass attempt for a gain of five yards. But, his head coach remains excited about the tools and natural ability Auld brings to

Senior slot-man Jaret Harrison totaled 14 grabs, for 123 yards and a score. And, then there’s junior running back Brad Mendoza, who is in Reser’s scouting report is “a very smart, tough runner,” both of which are tools that should suit him well as he steps into the role of featured back for the Bears. more Theo Hernandez, looks to bring a nice change of pace to Mendoza’s style with his quickness. Finally, factor in the luxury of having four seniors in linemen Nate Kissell, Joey Adkins, Tyler Lilley, Jake Foster, and Andrew Kreais providing protection, and Auld’s confidence has to be growing already. Foster was an All-Press honorable mention lineman last year. On the defensive side of the football, it will be much of the same for Reser’s 4-4 multiple coverage scheme, with many of the same suspects who are standouts on the Bears’ offense looking to both lead and fill the shoes of those players who graduated last spring on defense. One such suspect? Senior nose tackle Lilley, who is explosive off the ball, and has

a natural motor that just doesn’t stop, which bodes well for the unit when it comes to getting a good push into the backfield and getting after opposing QBs. Looking to join him in the Friday night sack party will be third-year defensive end Adkins (9.5 tackles for loss in ‘16); freshman Jake Foster (seven TFL); and three-technique Andrew Farris... all four of whom could team up to become a solid run-stuffing unit in the TAAC. Weaver, a returning All-Press honorable mention defensive back, is the leading returning tackler after garnering 77 last year. Linebacker Bradley Mendoza had 65.5, Harrison, at cornerback last year and linebacker this year, had 43 tackles and four interceptions to earn All-Press honorable mention accolades and Lilley had seven tackles for a loss. Hernandez, who returns at defensive back, had two interceptions last year. This is Gibsonburg's last year in the TAAC as next year the Sandusky County school will join the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division. Gibsonburg had been in the SBC before joining the Suburban Lakes League in the early 1970s, before joining the TAAC.

Flyers seek to find their way into league race Coach: Mark Emans, fifth year Last year: 4-6 overall (2-5 NBC) Preview: Lake returns six starters on defense and four starters to an offense that scored 15 points a game last season. “Our defense kept us in a lot of ballgames when our offense wasn’t effective,” coach Mark Emans said, adding that some of the offensive woes could be blamed on young athletes who had little varsity experience. “We had a young sophomore (Dawson Delventhal) playing quarterback and he had some growing pains and got thrown into the fire,” Emans said. “We had a freshman running back who was a very good athlete, but he was still just a freshman. We couldn’t get any consistency last year and we are hoping for that this year.” Emans said the Flyers could have an even younger starting group this season. He said as many as seven sophomores could earn starting nods and “maybe” two or three seniors. “You’re usually as good as your senior class,” Emans said. “This group of seniors is really good, but we only have six total in the class. It’s going to be a youth movement this year.” Delventhal completed 93 of 192 passes (48.4 percent) for 1,179 yards and five touchdowns last season. “I like his willingness to learn new things,” Emans said. “We throw a new route or concept in and he grasps it really quickly. He’s grasping it a lot better than last year, as far as who to read in man coverage or who to read in cover-two or coverthree coverage.” Senior running back Blake Osborn has bulked up following a season in which he had 136 carries for 736 yards and eight touchdowns. Sophomore Scott Mackiewicz will also get a lot of time in the backfield after rushing for 448 yards and two touchdowns on 110 carries as a freshman. “He got the majority of reps this summer,” Emans said. “He’s not as big as Blake, but he’s more of a slasher and he’s better

Lake quarterback Dawson Delventhal eludes a couple Northwood defenders last year. (Press file photo by Don Thompson/Facebook.com/DNRSports) in the open field. Blake is a prototypical fullback. They both have qualities and we want to use both of them as much as we can.” Lake will miss the services of junior running back Luke Walsh, who had 82 carries for 353 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. Walsh, who started 21 games the past two seasons, broke his collarbone in the Flyers’ first scrimmage and underwent season-ending surgery. Junior Justin Cole, who lettered last year, steps into Walsh’s position. The wingbacks are sophomores Nick Perry and Alex Salisbury; the receivers are senior split end Jacob Benson, sophomore slot receiver Bronson Medley and 6-foot5, 255-pound tight end Dylan O’Quinn. Benson caught 22 passes for 330 yards and one TD last year, while O’Quinn had 19 receptions for 239 yards and one TD. The offensive line consists of junior tackles Joe Muetze and Jeremiah Glander, junior guards Damion Allison and Nick

Miller, and sophomore center Brendan Zink. Lake graduated all five starters off last year’s line. On defense, Cole will start at middle linebacker while Perry and junior Griffin Pollock will also see action at linebacker. The defensive backs include returning starters Benson and junior Johnny Guyton, Medley, Mackiewicz and sophomore Hayden Rodgers. Walsh was a first team Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press linebacker last year as a sophomore after finishing second on the team with 91 tackles. “I think the backs will be a strength this year,” Emans said. “They are quicker than last year and they are playing better in coverage so far in camp. We ran a lot of zone last year and we are trying hard this fall to get in more man coverage.” Emans said one key to the Flyers’ success is staying healthy. “We have a lot of young kids who are not yet ready for Friday night football,” the coach said. “I wouldn’t call it a rebuilding

Rangers look for shot to get league trophy back Coach: Ken James, 32nd year, 178-141 Last year: 6-4 overall (4-2 TAAC) Preview: The Rangers return 14 lettermen, including six starters on offense and five on defense. “It’s a veteran team in some ways and not so veteran in other ways,” coach Ken James said. “We started three sophomores in the backfield in the (first) scrimmage. We have a senior quarterback, so there is experience there. On the O-line, we have three guys who started full-time (last year) and one started part-time. We’re pretty young in a lot of perimeter spots.” James said the team has shown good chemistry during the offseason and summer practices, and Northwood’s nine seniors have been a good influence. “They are good leaders, hard workers and tough kids,” James said. “We’re going to be solid up front physically and we have good size. We’re going to be young on the edge virtually everywhere. We are breaking in new starters and breaking in young guys.” Senior quarterback Tim Romstadt completed 32 of 75 passes for 638 yards and four touchdowns last season. He also ran 133 times for a team-high 817 yards and eight touchdowns. James said he is confident that Romstadt will improve on last year’s 43 percent completion percentage. “We’ve got to be better overall at pass protecting,” James said. “We spend more time run blocking, obviously, but we have to get better overall in the passing game. Tim is a big, physical runner and he’s put on 15 pounds and is faster and significantly stronger. He’s been real accurate this summer and he’s throwing it well. He has a real good presence in the pocket.” Junior Noah Cornelison returns at fullback and will be joined at that position by senior Jason Lord and sophomores Dalton Dempsey and Tyler Hughes. Cornelison had 79 carries for 422 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He also caught 10 passes for 141 yards. “Noah isn’t gigantic but he protects the ball well, runs hard and he catches the ball well,” James said. “He’s gotten stronger

A lot of guys who didn’t start last year are physically ready, it’s just a question of them handling the pressure when the Friday night lights come on.” The halfbacks are sophomores Austin Cole, Anthony Williams and Cayden Schober, and junior Lamar Daniels. Schober will also play receiver along with junior Jon Lucas. “Jon caught a deep ball for a score in our (first) scrimmage,” James said. “Other guys who are going to compete for time are Jaylen Matthews, Colton Falk and Noah Thompson. We have speed at wideout this year and our running backs are pretty fast. We want to take advantage of that.” The line consists of senior tackle Brandon Hayes, junior tackle Dave Chappell, senior guard Zac Heuser, junior guard Lukas Cousino and junior center Dante Dixon. action at guard and possibly center. Heuser is a three-year starter and Hayes, Cousino and Chappell all started games last season. “We want to be physical and control the line of scrimmage,” James said. Chappell and Cousino will play on the interior defensive line along with seniors Dylan Rodriguez and Brett Turner, junior Cody Fonseca, and sophomores Sam Bullimore and Dalton Dempsey. Inside linebackers are Lord, a returning starter, and senior Devin Newman, who started several games. Hughes and Cornelison will also play inside. Hayes, juniors Joey Heise and Obel Garcia and sophomore Erik Marazon will see action at outside linebacker. “They’re physical and they like contact,” James said of his linebacker corps. “We’re OK with that.” Lucas, Schober, Falk and freshman Demond Marks are vying for the starting nod at cornerback. Junior Lamar Daniels and sophomore Austin Cole could also get playing time there. “We are experienced in some spots and not experienced in others,” James said. “Athletically, we’ve got some guys with some raw ability and they are talented players. Playmakers, experienced O-line to lead Rockets Coach: Mike May, 10th year, 44-46 Last Year: 5-5 (2-4 SBC Bay Division) Forecast: Oak Harbor lost the vast majority of its offensive production and must replace its quarterback, Jeff Winterfield, top three running backs (Dylan Mansor, Jaret Parker, Caleb Oberther) and two of its best receivers (Matt Harris, Raymon Behlmer). But as with any offense especially a run-oriented one like the Wing-T, it starts with the offensive line, and the Rockets have four returning starters up front. Hunter Lacer and A.J. Showalter return as tackles and the guards, Aaron Lee and Cole Roob, are back as well. Currently, Ted Ozanski and Austin Martikan are battling it out for the center position. “It’s definitely the strength of our team. It’s really shown through twoa-days and our scrimmages,” said Oak Harbor coach Mike May. “You can tell the offensive line has played together for a year. We’ll go as far as they take us.” They’ll be blocking for seven players that are battling for the three running back positions — Garrett Duty, Clark Rutledge, Garrett Mapes, Tyler Laughlin, Adam Ohms, Clay Schulte and Hunter Wilkins. Laughlin, Schulte and Mapes are the fullbacks and the other four will split time at halfback and wingback. The frontrunner to be the starter at wide receiver is Aric McAtee, who stands 6-foot-4. Nick Pfeiffer and Kyle Hanselman will also see time at split end. At tight end, Sam Lattea and Dominick will battle for the starting spot. The quarterback is sophomore Jac Alexander, who started for the basketball team last year as a freshman. The youngster can pass and run and is wise beyond his years. “He’s very level-headed and has taken on a leadership role with his offense. I’m impressed with the way he commands the offense,” said May. “He’s got a good arm, but he’s a good runner. “Taking care of the football is a top priority, being opportunistic and being an excellent red zone team is important. I think we have skill guys that give us the potential to be a power running team and spread it

We’ll be doing both and we like our personnel.” The 4-4 defense has a line will feature tackles Lacer and Roob in the middle with some combination of Ohms, Vidal and Laughlin as the ends. Lacer was an Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press second team lineman last year as a junior. Wilkins and Rutledge are the outside linebackers with Duty in the mix, though he could play in the secondary. The middle linebackers are Mapes and Lee and Schulte are fighting for the other spot. Kaleb West, Brandon Elmes and Tristan Lacer are looking to fill out the cornerback position with Alexander manning the back of the defense at safety. “One things that stands out is we’ve had the best summer in a long time. I think we have a very invested football team, our

chemistry is very good,” said May. “That has us pretty excited.” Oak Harbor’s schedule is a little different. Gone from the schedule is Clyde, Fremont St. Joseph and Eastwood. The Rockets have replaced them with Shelby, Tiffin Calvert and Woodmore. Oak Harbor is in the Bay Division of the new-look Sandusky Bay Conference, which also includes Edison, Huron, Port Clinton, Shelby and Vermilion. The Rockets, who just missed out on the playoffs last year, also moved down to Division V, which should help their chances of getting to the postseason. “I think the three-division format was a benefit for all the teams involved. We’re happy being in the middle division with schools our size,” said May. “Moving down a division and the changes in the league are all good things for the program.”

Youthful Indians look to compete under Hiedelberg Coach: Kirk Heidelberg, first year Last Year: 4-6 (1-4 CL) Preview: The future looks promising for the Waite Indians, but what does the present hold for this group? With just six seniors and some young, talented players, Waite’s future is bright, but what does that mean for year’s team? With a new coach and some changes being made to the offense, there are questions surrounding the team. Fortunately, the team has a capable set of playmakers in running backs Neko Brown and Jay’Von Boose and wide receivers Trey Mathena and Mark Randall. Mathena is the top performer of the group, having accounted for 813 yards (404 rushing; 409 receiving) and 16 touchdowns last season. Gone is the do-everything quarterback from last year, Ronnie Sanders who threw for 1,183 yards and 17 touchdowns and ran 170 times for 1,318 yards and eight scores. Mathena was an Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press honorable mention selection at receiver last year. There is currently a three-man competition to replace Sanders with senior Darren Anderson and sophomores Javon Pratt and Alan Monjaraz battling it out. New coach Kirk Heidelberg is going to be doing a lot of things with the offense, one that was run-oriented under Dan Chipka but will now feature plenty of variation. “We run a lot of formations, a lot of plays. We try to be balanced — run the ball, throw the ball — give a lot of different looks and then rely on what works. That’s what we’re trying to figure out. That’s why these scrimmages are so huge,” said Heidelberg. “It always needs to be solidified with competing and scrimmaging. We do everything, we have a lot of formations and figure our personnel groupings. We’ve got a system, we have a plan, It’s not so much about stuff, it’s about execution and our fundamentals. There’s no magical offense, you’ve got to go with what you know and tailor your players around that.” Currently, there are seven players competing for spots on the offensive line -- three seniors, one junior and three sophomores.

Returning Waite offensive lineman Lemarkus Neal (55) leads Waite's blocking attack. (Press file photo by Harold Hamilton/HEHphotos.smugmug.com) Kameron Lott and Mikyah Hudson are the tackles, LaMarcus Neal, an All-Press honorable mention pick, and Matt Broyles are the guards and Mikhi Ulrich is the center with Ian Salyers and Drake Bryant in the mix. Broyles also an HM All-Press selection. On the defensive side, there are a number of players battling it out for spots on the line. Brown and Booze are the middle linebackers with Arnold Crossno and Ryan Bishop flanking them on the outside. The secondary features Vincent Smith, who had three interceptions last year, and Mathena, who lead the area with six picks, though he could be moved to outside linebacker. Taevion Cummings, a 6-foot-3, 230 pound defensive lineman, was a second team Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press pick last year as a junior. He had 46 tackles last season, including 20.5 for a loss if you add in quarterback sacks. Neal returns at

the defensive line after garnering 21 sacks for a loss one year ago, and Mathena had six interceptions from his defensive back position, which tied with Lake's Brandon Knierim for leading the entire Eastern Maumee Bay community. Vincent Smith, another returning defensive back, had three interceptions. “We’re basically a JV team, we only have six seniors. We’re going to be good. There are going to be some growing pains,” said Heidelberg, explaining that he only meant junior varsity in terms of previous varsity experience, except for a good number of returning proven high level performers. “We’re going to be good if we keep everybody together. There’s a lot of good, young talent. It’s about having these kids stick with it. “(The team) was 4-6 and lost some

kids. We’re going to have to reload. We’re going to have to find ways to win football games in all three phases.” Start won the City League last year but Woodward had the best overall record. Heidelberg sees the Polar Bears as the favorite to win the conference this year. The Indians’ schedule features three similar nonconference opponents from last year — Sylvania Northview, Maumee and rival Clay — but Lima Central Catholic and Tecumseh (Michigan) have been added to the mix. Heidelberg, a Woodward alumnus, has an extensive resume that features professional coaching stops in Germany and Canada and numerous jobs in the collegiate ranks at Kansas, Lehigh, Tennessee State and Morehead State, where he also got his degree. He has coached in Northwest Ohio as both an assistant at Whitmer and Perrysburg and later under both Nick Saban and Gary Pinkel at the University of Toledo.

Bosh looks to return stability to ’Cat football Coach: Lou Bosh, second year, 1-9 Last year: 1-9 (0-7 NBC) Preview: Woodmore returns 14 lettermen including five starters on offense and four on defense. Bosh, who has been a varsity coach for 14 years, said this may be his youngest team. The ‘Cats have just four seniors on their 39-man roster in Donovan Reyes, Zach Matwiejczyk, Derrick Berkel and Cole Sirmans. There are 14 freshmen and 13 sophomores. “We had a lot of young kids (at Woodmore) in 2000, but that was a mix of juniors and sophomores,” Bosh said. “This team might be comparable to that year, with their lack of varsity game experience. These guys have to grow up fast and get game experience. They’ve been sponges and they have taken in the information we’ve given them and absorbed everything we teach them. Hopefully, that pays off. “They made a great commitment to the weight room in January all the way through spring. I’m anxious to see the changes in us strength-wise compared to last year, especially on our offensive an defensive line.” Senior quarterback Donovan Reyes returns after completing 118 of 258 passes for 1,612 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. He is a team captain along with Matwiejczyk and Berkel. “Donovan has continued to be a vocal leader for us,” Bosh said. “The kids take to him and he does a great job of leading. We’re not asking him to necessarily play out of his shoes. We’re asking him to manage the game and run the (wing-T) offense as that leader at quarterback.” The backup quarterbacks are sophomore Dylan LaFountain, who will also see time at running back, and freshman Aaron Sandrock. Matwiejczyk will line up at running back along with junior Taityn Rollins, LaFountain and sophomore Nate Fligor. “Zach’s got good agility and speed and is good at making cuts,” Bosh said. “He has a good knack for running the ball up

His experience from last year will help.” The receivers include Berkel, Rollins, Sirmans and sophomore Andrew Barringer. “Barringer will be more of a tight end,” Bosh said. “He has good size with good hands.” Junior center Michael Lindhorst, a two-year letterman, anchors the offensive line along with junior tackles Kipp Saam (two-year letterman) and Paul Morgan, and sophomore guards Seth Drossel and Tristan Tracy. Two other sophomores, Marty Perkins and Jeremy Tingley, will also see action in the trenches.

“Barringer has decent speed and he has good height and strength for a linebacker. We can move him around to the line of scrimmage or in zone coverage.” The middle linebackers are Drossel, Fligor, Tracy and sophomore Tyler Babka. “We have a young corps of linebackers who need to gain game experience to continue to get better,” Bosh said. “They’ve taken some steps forward, but they still have to get better.” The backfield will include Berkel, Rollins and Sirmans at cornerback, and LaFountain, Reyes and Sandrock in a rotation at free safety. “Derrick and Taityn are bringing the most experience, and LaFountain got some experience late in the season last year,” Bosh said. “He’s built a lot of confidence in his play. We’ve got to be able to defend the pass and have guys who can cover. Those guys give us the best opportunity.”

“We are trying to find that mix of who’s getting the job done and executing,” Bosh said. “They are a smart group and they are continually learning blocking schemes and adjustments and adapting at the line of scrimmage and identifying (defensive) fronts.” The defensive line rotation consists of Lindhorst, Saam, Morgan, Tingley and sophomore Hunter Angel. Matwiejczyk, a middle linebacker last year, has moved to outside linebacker along with the 6-foot-4 Barringer. “With some of the guys we have who can step in at inside linebacker, Zach gives us more speed on the outside,” Bosh said.
