hen it comes to your beauty routine, its easy to fall in a slumpevery morning you apply the same products resulting in an identical, unchanged look. While I am one for consistency, I’m a firm believer in switching things up every now and then. One of the best ways to experiment with makeup is to take the trends seen at NYC, London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks and apply them to your everyday routine. While some trends seen on the runways might be over-the-top to wear to work (hello Vivienne Westwood) there are many that can be worn everyday. Eye makeup trends covered looks from classic cat’s eye Mad Men makeup at Bagdley Mischka to sultry navy smokey eyes seen at Michael Kors to natural simplicity at Narcisco Rodriguez. Hair trends covered the slick back center part at Roberto Cavalli to the dual texture: sleek around the crown, flowing in the back at Missoni and Gucci. Smooth blowouts with center parts were donned at Max Mara and side parts were spotted at Reem Acra, Calvin Klein and Derek Lam Fall into these trends with the easy-to-do beauty tips.
1.
MINIMALIST BOLD BROWS Bold brows continued to be a trend at fashion week. Helmut Lang highlighted unkempt brows with a smooth, polished complexion, sans bright eye shadows and lipsticks. The minimalist trend was further seen at Derek Lam, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Proenza Schouler, Victoria by Victoria Beckham and Reed Krakoff. To try this trend for every day, follow these few steps: 1. On clean, moisturized skin, apply some BB cream all over, a touch of concealer on blemishes and under the eyes and a light dusting of powder. 2. *Aiming for full brows, put your tweezers away and let your brows grow out. Once your achieved the shape and fullness you desire, tweeze the stray hairs all around and trim any overly long hairs to create the perfect full brow shape. 3. To fill them in, comb brows in the opposite direction of growth. This allows you to see exactly where you need to fill in the brows. Using a shadow brow pencil, fill brows in using a feather-like strokes. Once you have filled in the whole brow, comb them back to shape and go over with the brow comb a few times. This will allow the shadow to blend in naturally with your brows to create a natural-looking fullness. 4. A light wash of a bone colored shade of eye shadow on the lids, curled lashes and two coats of mascara completes the look for the eyes, keeping the focus on the fuller brow. 5. Keeping with the minimalist theme, a bit of lip balm on the lips and the slightest dusting of a neutral blush finishes this look. **This look pairs well with a smooth, blown out hairstyle. Protect your strands by misting them with TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray. This product guards against the damage of blow dryer heat yet keeps your hair shiny and incredibly soft.

UNDER EYE SHADOW
One of my favorite looks from NYFW was the under eye shadow seen at Alturazza, Jason Wu and Rodarte. Downtown grunge chic is the muse du jour. Why not add a bit of fun for after work drinks? 1. Use darker shades such as slates, gunmetal greys, navy blue though avoid black as it can be too harsh worn just on the bottom. 2. I suggest doing your eye makeup first and then work on your face. Using darker shades or colour can create some fall out and starting with the eyes makes it easier to clean up any shadow on the face. 3. Choose your eyeliner shade (I prefer waterproof eyeliners-they last longer and are less likely to crease) and lightly smudge some liner from the bottom outer corner of your eye towards the center, going from thicker on the outside to thinner towards the center. 4. Dip a small shadow brush in an eye shadow of matching colour to your eyeliner. Softly smudge the shadow filled brush overtop of the liner, blending them together and towards the inner eye. 5. Be sure to smudge the pencil and shadow into the bottom lash line to avoid any gaps between the shadow and your lash line. 6. Apply mascara to the top and bottom lashes 7. Clean up any fall out shadow with a q-tip or a wet wipe and apply your foundation and concealer with a bit of powder. I prefer the dewy look so I recommend only powdering under the eyes, around the nose and in between the eyebrows. 8. Contour your cheeks and temples with a matte bronzer and pair with a nude lip or clear gloss

BRIGHT EYE & BOLD LIP I love this trend because it’s very glamorous. It has an old Hollywood feel to it though can be taken up a notch and made super 1920’s vamp with a darker lip. It’s important here to choose shades that work together and don’t contrast too much, if at all. Aubergine, Cranberry, Rust and Purple on the eyes and Tangerine, Hot Pink (at DVF) and all shades of Red from reddish browns (3.1 Phillip Lim) to deep wines (Vera Wang) enhanced the autumnal feel. 1. This makeup focuses mainly on eyes and lips with a blush/contour to help balance the face. One shade of eye shadow all over the lid with a soft shimmery highlight under the brow bone starts off this glamorous look. 2. As with the under eye shadow application, start with the eyes. Using the shade of your choice (I love aubergine and cranberry) apply an even application from your lash line up to the contour, diffusing the color so it is softly blended and even throughout. 3. Using a shimmery highlight shade and a fluffy brush, swipe the shade under your brow bone. The shade you choose should provide simply a hint of shimmer as color is the focus of the eye here. 4. Curl lashes and apply two coats of mascara. 5. Clean up any fall out and apply your foundation, concealer and bit of powder 6. Ensure your lips are smooth and supply by using a dry face cloth or an old toothbrush and buff away any flakes. 7. It is important to have a matching lip liner and lipstick for the best application. Outline your lips and completely fill in with lip liner. Using a lip brush for precision, apply the lipstick all over, blot once with a tissue and reapply. 8. A nice soft, warm brown blush or a matte bronzer provides the right balance for this look. Apply just under the cheekbones to finish this look. **The side part hairstyle pairs perfectly with this look. Part your hair to one side and comb back the opposing side for a smooth finish and pin it back. Comb the side part and smooth and spray with TRESemme Tres Two Extra Hold Hairspray to maintain shape and hold all day.

CAT’S EYE LINER Whether it was a simple liner or a bold look, the 60’s cat’s eye was seen on the runways of Honor, Monique Lhullier, Bagdley Mischkah and Dolce and Gabbana. A fun way to change your look with a quick slick of kicked up liner. Shades of blue, from graphic bright to deep navy were prominent as was the tried and tested black liner. Mad Men your look with a fun cat’s eye for an evening out. 1. The most important thing to remember with this look is that a 60’s cat’s eye is different than a 50’s winged liner. We are going for more Sophia Loren than Marilyn Monroe. The 50’s winged liner flicks upwards towards the brow while the 60’s liner follows the shape of the eye outwards and connects with the bottom lash line. 2. This look pairs well with the minimalist look and is a fun way to add a swipe of liner to glam up your look. 3. Using a gel liner is an easy way to achieve this look (especially if you have shaky hands like this girl). Dip an eyeliner brush in a gel liner (I love navy blue for a different look) and tilting your head back while looking in the mirror, trace your lash line using small, even strokes from the inner corner to the outer end. 4. Once you reach the outer corner, extend the brush tip out while lightly lifting off. This helps give you the graphic winged line. Careful to not go too far out! 5. Once you’ve drawn your desired line, connect the liner to the bottom lash line and lightly smudge it towards the inner eye. This gives that feline sexiness the cat’s eye is known for. 6. Curl lashes and apply two coats of volumizing mascara. The thicker the lashes the better. 7. This looks great with a nude lip and a quick way to tone down your lips without a lipstick is to use a bit of concealer. Dab some all over your lips and voila! A perfect nude lip.

hether it’s one too many late night dance parties or stressful work deadlines keeping you up, waking up in the morning only to be faced with puffy eyes is one beauty dilemma we would rather not be burdened with. Usually a more common affliction in women aged 40+, permanent eye bags occur when the delicate tissue around your eyes weakens with age, causing the skin to sag and the fat to move down and gather below your eyes. However if you’re experiencing puffy eyes in your 20’s and 30’s, it’s likely your lifestyle is taking its toll and the puffiness you see is fluid gathering. Don’t worry, all is not lost. Follow these simple steps and your eyes will thank you! First things first, sleep! It’s not just the quantity of sleep you get but the quality. Great sleep is vital for all aspects of your health and making sure you get your 8 hours a night will give your eyes their best chance at waking up fresh and alert! You might also want to add another pillow to your bed, keeping your head slightly elevated. Sleeping completely flat on your back can cause the fluids to pool under your eyes, as can sleeping on your stomach. Don’t forget to remove all your makeup before bed too to avoid unnecessary eye irritation! We all know we should be drinking 8 litres of water every day for optimum health but if you’re worried about puffy eyes, it’s even more imperative to keep up with your H20. A large glass of water before bed is particularly effective. You should also try and restrict your salt intake. Osmosis means that water will tend to travel to tissue that has a higher concentration of salt, so whether you’ve been tearing up at Titanic or chowing down on Chinese food, the excess salt will cause water to gather under your eyes – hello puffiness! If you’re partial to a cocktail or two, you might want to abstain for the sake of your skin. Excess drinking equals dehydration, which can cause the delicate skin around your eyes to become weak and also encourages your body to hold on to water causing puffiness. Whilst you’re saying no to the vodka, you might just want to grab your sneakers and go for a run, exercise helps improve your circulation and encourages fluid to travel around your system, avoiding build up. If your eyes are red, you might also want to go and get checked for allergies, which often cause puffiness. Lifestyle changes are all well and good but sometimes all a girl needs is a quick fix. Try one of these at home remedies to reduce puffy eyes... - Keep two spoons in the freezer and hold them under your eyes until the spoons get warm again. Take a green or black tea bag and soak it in cold water. Once cold, hold against your eyes. Tea contains tannic acid, which will aid in reducing
-
- Swelling by restricting the blood vessels. Slices of cucumber or potato will have a similar effect. - Gently massage under and around your eyes to encourage the build up to keep moving. - Moisten cotton pads with water and put them in the fridge, once they’re cool, place over your eyes until the coolness disappears. Repeat as necessary - Add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and soak cotton pads in this solution. Place over your eyes for five minutes and repeat as necessary. 2 8 P R E S S T he B eau t y

“the excess salt will cause water to gather under your eyes – hello puffiness!”
It’s also important to find the right skincare to aid in your puff reducing quest! Try using an eye roller when you wake up, these nifty tools will stimulate the area under your eyes and help keep puffiness at bay. A great option is the Garnier skin renew Anti-Puff roller (found in your local drugstore). Loaded with caffeine & peppermint, this is perfect in the morning to cool and tighten eyes. If you like a little pampering (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?!) try Origins No puffery cooling mask. (The Bay). Yeast and Mushroom extract in this icy mask deliver an instant cooling and brightening effect. For a decadent splurge, try La Mer The Eye Concentrate (Holt Renfrew). This tiny pot offers it’s own silver tipped applicator and includes seaweed and eucalyptus extracts.
For a flawless finish, try Benefit’s Erase paste (Sephora). This concentrated concealer is perfect for blending in and concealing the lines caused by puffiness. A little goes a long way, just use your ring finger to dab lightly under your eyes and blend! To brighten under your eyes, the classic Touche Eclat from Yves St Laurent (Holt Renfrew) is revered worldwide. Famous for being able to take even the most tired of eyes from drab to fab, Touche Eclat is one product everyone should splurge on. Puffy eyes can be a nightmare, but with a little lifestyle change, a little at home magic and a little help from our friends in the cosmetics industry, you won’t wake up screaming!
For something a little more wallet friendly, try Caudalie’s Vinosource SOS Morning eye rescue (Sephora) with white tea extract and grape water, this soothing cream is the perfect morning fix! Ok, so you’ve had enough sleep to rival sleeping beauty, your water drinking habits are impeccable and you’ve been resisting that last martini, but your eyes are still puffy? Fake it til you make it!

uring the Summer season it’s often easier to keep your body looking fantastic! We’re not just talking about eating healthy and the exercising likely already in your routine. We’re talking about the beauty regime for your skin and body! With the more dull Fall and Winter months some of us can get a little bit on the lack-luster side when it comes to going that extra mile since “everything will be covered up anyway” right? For those of you thinking this way, please don’t! There are some key area’s to focus on that will keep your body looking beach worthy all year long. You probably read it everywhere, all the time, in every article about skin care. but it can’t be stressed enough. MOISTURIZE. Not just your face, hands and neck, everywhere! Keeping your body moisture rich ensures it feels great, looks great and stays healthy. Keep in mind, it’s always a best plan of action to have a different cream for your face/neck and then the one you’re using for your body. For your body, (man or woman) I highly recommend Korres’ Guava Body Butter. The smell has a soft almost beach like scent that leaves your skin feeling soft, hydrated and luxurious. The natural ingredients like Shea Butter and Quince extract have softening and rejuvenating qualities. The Guava is a great source of Vitamin C and antioxidants, together this cream is a miracle worker for dry knees, elbows and heels (great for foot rubs!). For your face, keep it light and pay attention to your skins demands. If you have oily skin then your needs for a face cream are much different compared to somebody who has dry skin. KISS My Face, has some great creams for all facial skin types, check them out. Sometimes it’s not what’s being used on your face that causes break outs or dry/oily skin, it’s your shampoo! If you have an oily scalp/hair, a shampoo filled with added moisturizers or oils isn’t what you want! There are shampoo’s that help target oil or “sebum” control such as Vichy. A little bit higher in price then a standard shampoo, rest assured, this isn’t a standard shampoo and you will notice a change in your hair and in your skin! Lastly, body exfoliation. You exfoliate the dead skin on your face right? Same goes for the body (this is for the gents, just as much as the ladies!). The average person sheds a full body of skin about every three days. Think about all that potential dead skin all over you body, clogging your pores. You don’t need to go to the spa to get a scrub down. Once or twice a week (tops), give that body a gentle scrub down head to toe after you soap up and rinse off in the shower or bath. When looking for an exoliant again, pay attention to your skin (oily, dry, combination), like before, this impacts the results. By paying attention to your skin type and maintaining a proper routine your skin will look beach ready any time you are!

Q&A with sid cr atzbar g S
id Cratzbarg is Ottawa’s go to gentleman for all things fragrance. We caught up with ‘The Aristocrat of Scent’ for a little one-onone about the season’s must have fragrances! What are the scent trends for the Fall/Winter? It’s very exciting for this Fall and Winter. You’re basically going to see three major trends. The big tea component, it’s fresh, it’s going to be everywhere. For example Bulgari is very well known for their tea infused fragrances. They’ve developed a lot of new fragrances with white tea and green tea. The second trend, I call it, “berry-licious”. You’re going to see red berries in so many fragrances. Bulgari again, they have a whole collection with berries called Coral. The last trend you’re going to see is amazing, woods, exotic woods like Oud, really influenced by the middle east, very sensual. Women and Men are back to the classics, they’re looking at Versace, Ferragamo, Bulgari.
Is there a unique scent brand for men you could recommend to check out? The Bois Collection, I’m very proud of that, I’m the guy who really talked about it and made it #1 of all the Holt Renfrew’s. It’s all from Florence Italy, every bottle is hand crafted, and it started in 1920. Men absolutely love it, I did an event for BMW and there were a lot of Ambassadors and European visitors, that’s what they wanted. I honestly believe people want a fragrance that’s not on every drug store shelf or in every department store.
A lot of people say you can tell a lot about a person by their style, what about the fragrance they wear?
When shopping for the “perfect fragrance(s)” is there a particular process to know which fragrance goes with your body/style?
p h o to b y K a ti a P ers h in
Absolutely, I’m glad you asked that. I always say to women and men “would you wear the same pair of shoes with every outfit? Of course not”. Fragrances are the same, it has to do with seasons, it has to do with wardrobe. Like clothes, you need an array of scents, you really do.
That’s an excellent question! The answer to that is that’s why they come to see me. I am a fragrance stylist and there is a whole art form to it I feel.
If you could recommend a fragrance for women who works in an office environment working closely with people but she still wants to wear a bit of luxury you would say.. There are so many, but here’s a few. The Vanita’s by Versace, it has black tea in it, very refreshing. Yellow Diamond, also by Versace, one of the key notes is Orange Blossom, again refreshing. Anything in the Prada line! Lastly, the Burberry ‘Tender”, your top note is Green Apple and it’s amazing! 33
