PRESTEL FOOD AND DRINK
This hilarious book serves up a cornucopia of absurd, unexpected, and downright stomachchurning ways restaurants are ditching the ordinary plate in favor of something more memorable.
WE WANT PLATES THE CRUSADE AGAINST FOOD ON SLATES, CHIPS IN MUGS, AND DRINKS IN JAM JARS ROSS MCGINNES, WITH A FOREWORD BY MARINA O'LOUGHLIN Fed up with being served food on planks of wood and pieces of slate, or drinks in jars? How about beef Wellington on barbed wire, a cooked breakfast on a shovel or sausages in a dog bowl? In recent years, the culinary world has been gripped by an epidemic of restaurants and chefs “getting creative” with food presentation—and Ross McGinnes has had enough. In 2015 he founded the Twitter account @WeWantPlates to push back against this trend and document serving travesties, building up more than 130,000 followers and receiving thousands of submissions. Organized by course—from starters to desserts—this wickedly funny book showcases the very “worst of” submissions as well as new material not previously published online. We Want Plates makes the perfect gift for anyone who likes their food served in the good old-fashioned way—on a plate. ROSS MCGINNES has worked in digital content since 1997, developing and managing groundbreaking services for corporations such as Orange, WWE, and the Premier League. He owns A Sky More Blue, a digital content management business.

At the forefront of a new wave of activity books, this menagerie of wild animals comes to life through the application of hundreds of colorful stickers.
From top to bottom: 1) sticker sheet and guide; 2) blank template; 3) work in progress; 4) finished animal
DOT ART STICKER SAFARI YONI ALTER
This collection of charming animals provides a satisfying creative experience. Twelve templates of abstract exotic animals—including a giraffe, lion, flamingo, antelope, and meerkat—are paired with hundreds of colorful stickers. Readers simply need to follow the guide and create the images of the animals by applying the stickers to the template. Because the drawings are abstract, there is no “correct” place for each sticker—as long as the right colors are in the right area, the animal will still emerge from the dots. Additional pages of multicolored stickers give readers the opportunity to get imaginative and create rainbow-colored animals. This freedom to “color outside the lines” offers the chance of creativity and fun. The “canvases” and sticker sheets are detachable, which makes the process easier and allows the images to be displayed afterwards. The perfect vehicle for unwinding and letting those creative juices flow, this exceptional sticker book will find a ready audience in adults as well as children. YONI ALTER is a designer and artist based in London. Playing with the viewer's perception is a recurring theme in his art. Alter has been exhibited internationally and he has created work for clients such as Tate, the Guardian newspaper, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

DOT ART STICKER SEURAT YONI ALTER The perfect fun and relaxing art project for adults and children, this activity pack includes everything needed for readers to make their own Pointillist sticker masterpiece. Containing 14 sticker sheets with over three-thousand colored circular stickers and an 18”x32” (46x82.5 cm) poster “canvas” of colored outlines, readers simply need to match the colored stickers to the outlines found on the poster to recreate the painting. Given that Pointillism relies on the ability of the eye and brain to blend colored dots into a fuller range of tones, it’s not necessary to place each sticker on precisely the right outline. As a result, every finished poster will be somewhat different—and extremely satisfying. With a handy folder-style flap that allows for easy storage and transportation of the artwork in progress, Dot Art: Sticker Seurat makes the perfect activity to take on vacation or to unwind after a busy day. YONI ALTER is a designer and artist based in London. Playing with the viewer's perception is a recurring theme in his art. PRESTEL ARCHITECTURE
Now available in a new compact edition, this book offers a stunning visual archive of nearly 200 images of modern architecture by awardwinning photographer Nicolas Grospierre.
MODERN FORMS A SUBJECTIVE ATLAS OF 20TH-CENTURY ARCHITECTURE NICOLAS GROSPIERRE, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY ADAM MAZUR, ALONA PARDO, AND ELIAS REDSTONE Both a reference work and a personal exploration of modernist architecture, this fascinating collection of Nicolas Grospierre’s photography covers structures built between 1920 and 1989 in Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and Asia. These images range from iconic buildings, such as the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis and the Ukrainian Institute of Scientific Research and Development in Kiev, to little-known structures such as the Balneological Hospital in Druskininkai, Lithuania or Oscar Niemeyer’s unfinished International Fair Grounds in Tripoli, Lebanon. Derived from his popular blog, A Subjective Atlas of Modern Architecture, and organized by architectural form, this book reveals how modernist architecture is the embodiment of political and social ideologies, especially in public institutions such as banks, churches, libraries and government buildings. Following the series of full-page images, an index details the location, date, architect, and purpose of each building. While many of the buildings in this archive often go unrecognized, their forms are prominent in the landscape of modern civilization. Grospierre’s keen eye and enthusiasm for the mundane as well as the sublime will motivate readers to look at the buildings around them in new and exciting ways. NICOLAS GROSPIERRE was awarded the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale for his joint exhibition in the Polish Pavilion with Kobas Laksa. His work has been exhibited across the world, including displays of ‘Modern Forms’ at the Architectural Association, London, and National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

At a time when individual rights are being contested and when those on the fringes of society feel deeply threatened, this powerful photographic compilation delivers a message of humanity and inclusiveness that transcends geopolitical and cultural boundaries. Works by critically acclaimed photographers including Bruce Davidson, Paz Errazuriz, Jim Goldberg, Danny Lyon, Mary Ellen Mark, Boris Mikhailov, Daido Moriyama, and Dayanita Singh cast a compassionate, unflinching eye on the worlds inhabited by transsexuals, hookers, hustlers, bikers, junkies, circus performers, gang members, survivalists, petty criminals, and others who live in the shadows, on the streets, and out of the public eye. Grouped by photographer and ranging in genre from portraiture to photojournalism, these images were selected for their authentic and humane perspective, as well as for their artistic brilliance. An important testament to photography's power to both expose injustice and provide affirmation for those outside the norm, this collection bears witness to the ways social attitudes change across time and space, and how visual representation can promote understanding and dialogue. ALONA PARDO is Curator at the Barbican Art Gallery in London. Gerhard Richter’s abstract works are the subject of this extraordinary book, which brings together eighty works from collections around the world.
Exhibition Itinerary: Museum Barberini, Potsdam, Germany June 30–October 21, 2018 Published in association with Museum Barberini, Potsdam
GERHARD RICHTER ABSTRACTION EDITED BY ORTRUD WESTHEIDER AND MICHAEL PHILIPP
This publication is the first to focus solely on the abstract strategies and processes contained in Gerhard Richter’s body of work. In the early 1960s, the artist began to call painting into question, an exploration that continues to occupy him to this day. In the 1970s, he responded to the rejection of painting by creating a series of monochrome works in gray. Moreover, he viewed the color gray as a means of addressing political themes without depicting them in an idealized manner. In his Inpainting series of the 1970s, Richter made brushstrokes and the application of paint his subject. In other works, he photographed small details from his palette and transferred them onto large canvases in a photorealistic manner. In his color charts, he subjected painting to an objective process by leaving the arrangement of the colors to chance. Since 1976, Richter has created a series of abstract works by applying paint with a brush, scraper, and palette knife, alternating between conscious decision-making and random processes.

JAMES ROSENQUIST PAINTING AS IMMERSION EDITED BY STEPHAN DIEDERICH AND YILMAZ DZIEWIOR, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY SARAH BANCROFT, STEPHAN DIEDERICH, YILMAZ DZIEWIOR, ISABEL GEBHARDT, TINO GRASS, TIM GRIFFIN, AND TOM HOLERT
With a background in painting billboards, James Rosenquist had a unique perspective on the dual effects of imagery and scale on the viewing experience. His colossal pieces are immersive— they surround the viewer and dominate most gallery spaces. In this volume readers can examine his process of creating imageladen abstractions through his source materials. Rosenquist often started with images he’d literally ripped from the pages of print media and which he then transformed into collages. From there he would scale up the collage, recreating it as a large-scale canvas or installation. This book presents both well-known and rarely exhibited pieces, including F-111 and The Swimmer in the Economist, to show how juxtaposing seemingly incongruent images creates a powerful mirror of commercialist culture. With an focus on the cultural and political dimension, the essays about Rosenquist’s life, oeuvre, technique, and impact on the art world create a multi-faceted portrait of an artist who believed that the sum of the parts was essential to understanding the whole. YILMAZ DZIEWIOR is the Director of Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany. STEPHAN DIEDERICH is Curator of the collection of 20th-century art at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany.

ARE COMMUNISTS ALLOWED TO DREAM? THE GALLERY OF THE PALACE OF THE REPUBLIC EDITED BY ORTRUD WESTHEIDER AND MICHAEL PHILIPP
The Palace of the Republic was opened in 1976 to house East Germany’s parliament and to provide a cultural and historical center for the public to enjoy. During its construction, the government commissioned sixteen artists to create paintings in response to the question, “Are Communists allowed to dream?” Artists like Bernhard Heisig, Wolfgang Mattheuer, Willi Sitte, Werner Tübke, Walter Womacka, and Hans Vent contributed large-size works. They painted in their personal styles, but still stayed within the tradition of realistic painting in East Germany. With the fall of the wall and reunification, the paintings were removed from public view in 1990. The palace itself was demolished in 2006. This volume accompanies the first public exhibition of the paintings since 1995 and sheds new light on the East German government's understanding of art and its idea of self-representation. ORTRUD WESTHEIDER is Director of the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany. MICHAEL PHILIPP is Chief Curator of the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany.

RUTH BAUMGARTE TURN OF THE FIRE BEATE REIFENSCHEID, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY MAREN BODENSTEIN, CHIRIKURE CHIRIKURE, AND LINDIWE MABUZA After working as an illustrator Ruth Baumgarte found ultimate fulfillment as a painter when she started visiting Africa in the 1950s. She traveled to the African continent forty times over the course of her life. Her large-format oil paintings, often created from memory in her studio, are both a joyful expression of her love for the land and people, but also a way of preserving cultures. This book features both renowned and lesser-known works, including portraits, landscapes, and graphic works and all have her individual, rapid stroke style. Saturated with bright primary colors, these paintings leap off the page, and give off a nearly palpable heat. The Wiener Werkstätte, founded by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Fritz Waerndorfer, was an artists’ and craftsmen’s collective that existed in Vienna from 1903 until 1932. The Wiener Werkstätte style influenced generations of architects from Bauhaus to Art Deco. This book features the work of well-known Wiener Werkstätte members such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche along with lesser known designers such as Gudrun Baudisch, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Ugo Zovetti. This book celebrates the complexity and simplicity of sourdough bread making which offers a nourishing and meditative counterpoint to stressful lives and fast food.
SOURDOUGH MARTINA GOERNEMANN, WITH PHOTOGRAPHS BY BARBARA SIMON
Sourdough bread, delicious, tangy, satisfying, is one of life’s real pleasures, but like all good things, it takes time. In this journey through the world of sourdough bread baking, Martina Goernemann reveals how the process of baking bread exemplifies food awareness, a way of life that is becoming increasingly popular. Beginning with her own first attempts, Goernemann then goes on to interview a series of people across countries and cultures who, like her, have incorporated the practice of sourdough baking as a healing ritual for overscheduled lives. From interior design expert Delia Fischer finding her way in the kitchen of her grandmother, to John Whalley, an American realist painter who appreciates the simplicity of things and therefore discovered sourdough as a perfect object for his portraits, each of the individuals profiled represent a different appreciation for the time and patience necessary to create the perfect loaf. What they all have in common is Goernemann’s starter recipe, now part of the Puratos Company’s sourdough library. She’s also included valuable tips from professional bakers around the world. Whether it’s carving out time in a busy day, contemplating the miraculous combination of flour, and water, or painstakingly searching for the optimum conditions, bakers at every level will take away something valuable from this nourishing guide to living well through sourdough. MARTINA GOERNEMANN is an experienced journalist and author of six books about interior-styling and lifestyle. She also has a successful blog “RAUMseele” that deals with topics like living, food, and DIY.

Since 1989, when she began photographing the lives of artists squatting on the fringes of Beijing, Xing Danwen has forged a significant identity in the Chinese art world. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue, Captive of Love, focus on Xing’s relationship to Beijing and feature works from all of her major series - Wall House, Urban Fiction, Thread, Because I am in the mountain, disCONNEXION, A Personal Diary, Sleep Walking, and Scroll. Recalling several threads from Jean Genet’s final book, Prisoner of Love, which provides a prism for considering Xing’s artistic practice, this wide-ranging monograph reveals Xing has never stopped developing as an artist. In every image she creates, Xing reconstructs reality, as if driven by a compulsive desire to be at the center of the incident, approaching her characters with a marked sensuality. Through photographs, installations, and videos, Xing positions herself inside the event as a subject, a model, or a critical eye, creating a visual language that is both subversive and poetic. TAREK ABOU EL FETOUH is an independent curator. THE CHIAROSCURO WOODCUT IN RENAISSANCE ITALY EDITED BY NAOKO TAKAHATAKE, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY JONATHAN BOBER, JAMIE GABBARELLI, ANTONY GRIFFITHS, PETER PARSHALL, AND LINDA STIBER MORENUS Chiaroscuro woodcuts are among the most immediately appealing of all historic prints, displaying exquisite invention, refined draftsmanship, technical virtuosity, and sumptuous color. Printing multiple woodblocks inked in different tones to create an image, the chiaroscuro woodcut was one of the earliest, most successful forays into color printing in Europe. Following its invention in Germany, the technique was first adopted around 1516 in Italy where it flourished through the 16th century. This novel art form engaged the interests of the most celebrated artists of the Renaissance, including Titian, Raphael, Parmigianino, and Beccafumi, and underwent sophisticated developments in the hands of such printmakers as Ugo da Carpi, Antonio da Trento, Niccolò Vicentino, and Andrea Andreani. Featuring more than 100 prints and related drawings, this book incorporates pioneering art historical research and scientific analysis to present a comprehensive study of the subject. Essays trace its origins and evolution, describing both materials and means of production. Brimming with full-color illustrations of rare and beautiful works, this book offers a fresh interpretation of these remarkable prints, which exemplify the rich imagery of the Italian Renaissance. NAOKO TAKAHATAKE is Associate Curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

This dazzling book examines the inspiration behind the work of the Pre-Raphaelites and offers comparisons between the radical 19th-century artists and the masterworks they revered.

MASTERING THE MASTERS THE PRE-RAPHAELITES AND THEIR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION MELISSA E. BURON Started in the early 19th century by a group of British painters who rejected the sovereignty of the Royal Academy, the PreRaphaelites embraced the natural world and bright colors— as opposed to the dark palettes and amorphous lines that emerged in the wake of the Renaissance. Their mission was to be fundamentally modern by emulating the past. Now readers can appreciate their achievements in this volume that offers side-byside comparisons of 19th-century masterpieces with the 15th- and 16th-century Early Italian and Early Netherlandish paintings that inspired them. Exquisite reproductions of works by Giotto, Fra Angelico, van Eyck, Botticelli, Titian, Veronese, and Raphael are presented alongside examples by William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and others. The book traces the evolution of the Pre-Raphaelites, and details how these painters were exposed to the early masters as they traveled and encountered the finest European collections. The volume also features decorative arts, including stained glass and tapestries in emulation of Flemish and French textiles as well as “medievalized” ecclesiastic decorations. The result is an illuminating examination that delves into the aesthetic vocabulary of the Pre-Raphaelites and broadens our understanding of their motives and inspiration. MELISSA E. BURON is Associate Curator of European Paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

In the mid-sixties, armed with desire and passion, M (aka Michael Chow) established his vision of bridging the East with the West through the cuisine of China in a participatory theater of art, architecture, and design. Throughout five decades, he developed close relationships with many of the giants of contemporary art, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Ed Ruscha, and Keith Haring. Portraits of multiple generations of the Chow family by the most prominent artists of the 20th and 21st centuries portray how M holds court in the artistic community. Images of all iconic Mr Chow restaurants, spread throughout the globe from London to New York, Mexico City, and Beverly Hills, are captured here as well. The volume also features an illustrated history for Mr Chow’s famous Beijing duck and hand-pulled noodles. A global tribute to culinary culture, Mr Chow: 50 Years celebrates a life and a vision that crosses boundaries to bring people together. MICHAEL CHOW is a restaurateur, architect, and patron of the arts. After a 50-year radical sabbatical, M returned to his first passion, painting, in 2011. He continues to live and paint in Los Angeles.

3D DOUBLE VISION EDITED BY BRITT SALVESEN, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY THOMAS BANCHOFF, ERIC DRYSDALE, ERKKI HUHTAMO, ZACH ROTTMAN, AND GLORIA SUTTON This book follows the cyclical development of 3D media from the 1830s to the present, tracing an alternate history of modernism in which virtual depth takes precedence over material flatness. Pursuing a career-long obsession, author Britt Salvesen explores the origins of the stereoscope and its impact on later artists, featuring historic images by Jules Duboscq, Marcel Duchamp, Oskar Fischinger, Salvador Dali, and others. She traces the origins of anaglyph and polarized film, as well as other 3D formats, such as View-Master, Stereo Realist, lenticular printing, computer animation, and holography. Readers learn how 3D techniques were adopted by such artists as Simone Forti, Dan Graham, Mariko Mori, William Kentridge, Trisha Baga, and Lucy Raven. Encompassing nearly 200 years of innovation and covering a wide range of genres, artists, and media—from sophisticated perceptual experimentation to popular cinema— this volume explores how and why 3D images remain wondrous to 21st-century artists and audiences. Each book includes 3D viewing apparatuses to allow readers to fully engage in this multi-dimensional history of artistic expression. BRITT SALVESEN is Curator and Head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and the Prints and Drawings Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

EDWARD S. CURTIS EVENTS BEYOND WORDS WILLIAM EWING, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY CHRISTOPHER CARDOZO AND A.D. COLEMAN Edward S. Curtis is considered one of the world’s most famous and accomplished photographers—and justly so, given the depth and breadth of his monumental study of North America’s Native peoples and his artistry. This volume looks at three aspects of Curtis’s lifetime achievement: Curtis as a highly skilled photographer and printmaker; his vast oeuvre; and the complex man behind the camera. Featuring a unique selection of expertly reproduced vintage Curtis photographs, this book highlights both iconic and previously little-known images. Every type of subject matter, cultural and geographic area, genre of photography, and medium in which Curtis worked is represented, notably his photogravures, silver prints, and rarely seen Orotones and platinum prints. Many of the prints have a distinguished provenance: Edward S. Curtis’s personal collection, or important public or private collections built over the past forty years. Penetrating essays—historical, analytical, and scholarly—explore diverse facets of Curtis’s life and work. Monumental and breathtaking, this book is a fitting commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Curtis’s birth. WILLIAM EWING is a well-known curator and writer on photography. From 1996–2010, he was Director of the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, and Director of Exhibitions at the International Center of Photography, New York, from 1977–1984. A. D. COLEMAN is a distinguished critic who has written on Edward S. Curtis for many years. CHRISTOPHER CARDOZO is the world’s foremost collector of Edward S. Curtis photographs and related ephemera.

GEORGIA O’KEEFFE VISIONS OF HAWAI’I THERESA PAPANIKOLAS, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY BRIAN BOOM, DESOTO BROWN, AND SAM ’OHU GON III
In 1939, Georgia O’Keeffe, who at 51 was among the most famous artists in the United States, accepted a commission from the Hawaiian Pineapple Company to produce two paintings for advertising campaigns. Her nine-week trip to Hawai’i resulted in 20 paintings, which reveal that O’Keeffe—most commonly associated with the stark deserts of New Mexico—was profoundly inspired by what she saw and experienced on the lush, tropical Hawaiian Islands. The exhibition Georgia O’Keeffe: Visions of Hawai’i, and this accompanying volume, explores this little-known chapter in the artist’s career. Glowing with color and feeling, these paintings demonstrate O’Keeffe’s unique ability to make any place she happened to be in her own, and this groundbreaking volume offers a unique perspective by foregrounding the ecological complexity of the Hawaiian Islands—one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth—that is hidden behind O’Keeffe’s depictions. THERESA PAPANIKOLAS is Deputy Director of Art and Programs and Curator of European and American Art at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

IN THE FIELDS OF EMPTY DAYS THE INTERSECTION OF PAST AND PRESENT IN IRANIAN ART LINDA KOMAROFF, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY SHEILA CANBY, SHEIDA DAYANI, HAMID KESHMIRSHEKAN, HANI KHAFIPOUR, VALI MAHLOUJI, SHABNAM RAHIMI-GOLKHANDAN, SHADI SHAFIEI JAVADI, AND SANDRA WILLIAMS The past is a continuous and inescapable part of Iranian art and culture. This book beautifully demonstrates this notion with examples dating from the 1970s to the present—a time of turmoil and political upheaval. Featuring a dizzying variety of works—from paintings and photography to political cartoons and posters—this volume shows how contemporary artists appropriate and recontextualize myth and history to tell powerful new stories about life in Iran. This book also explores how pre-Modern artists first began to manipulate time by visually shifting the past into the present as demonstrated by Persian miniature painting, in particular illustrated versions of the Shahnama, or Book of Kings, the Iranian national epic. Statements from prominent contemporary artists consider the creative means by which they evoke the past to address present-day social and political concerns. Designed to promote fluid movement between historical and modern, this wideranging book offers a unique and important exploration of a country with a rich and complicated heritage. LINDA KOMAROFF is Curator and Department Head of Art of the Middle East at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

HOWARDENA PINDELL WHAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN NAOMI BECKWITH AND VALERIE CASSEL OLIVER, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY GRACE DEVENEY, CHARLES GAINES, LOWERY STOKES SIMS, AND BRIAN WALLIS
Born in middle-class Philadelphia in the 1940s, Howardena Pindell came of age during the Civil Rights movement. As an African-American woman artist, making her way in the world provided Pindell with source material to inspire her work. This book examines every facet of Pindell’s impressive career to date. Since the 1960s, she has used materials such as glitter, talcum powder, and perfume to stretch the boundaries of traditional canvas painting. She has also infused her work with traces of her labor, such as obsessively affixing dots of pigment and circles made with an ordinary hole punch tool. After a car crash in 1979 left her with short-term amnesia, Pindell’s work looked beyond the painting studio to explore a wide range of subjects, including the personal and diaristic as well as the social and political. This monograph also highlights Pindell’s work with photography, film, and performance. Excerpts from the artist’s writing, in particular her critique of the art world and her responses to feminism and racial politics, provide prescient commentary in light of conversations around equality and inclusion today. NAOMI BECKWITH is Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. VALERIE CASSEL OLIVER is Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

TONY BERLANT AND EVAN MAURER, WITH JULIA BURTENSHAW
Published in association with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
ANCIENT CERAMICS OF THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST Named after a valley in what is now Southwestern New Mexico, the Mimbres culture flourished between the 10th and 12th centuries. Through the exploration of paintings on Mimbres bowls, this book offers revelations about the culture’s worldview based on the patterns and shapes depicted in its pottery. Drawing on extensive research as well as photography of the flora and fauna that still thrive in the Mimbres Valley, the authors make the case that the pottery’s beautiful black-and-white paintings and highly intricate designs are abstractions of hallucinogenic experiences. Presenting a distinctive new interpretation of the iconography of ancient Mimbres painted ceramics, this volume addresses Mimbres culture and how this past civilization lived and communicated with the spirit world. TONY BERLANT is an artist and a founding member of the Mimbres Foundation, a Los Angeles–based conservancy dedicated to protecting vulnerable Mimbres sites. EVAN MAURER is Director Emeritus of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. JULIA BURTENSHAW is Assistant Curator in the Art of the Ancient Americas Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

LUKAVIC, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY GLENN ADAMSON, ANNE ELLEGOOD, JEN MERGEL, AND SARA RAZA A citizen of the Mississippi Choctaw Nation and part Cherokee, Jeffrey Gibson spent time in Germany, England, and Korea in his youth. As a gay Native artist, Gibson explores in his work issues of oppression and civil rights in America, as well as universal ideas of love, community, strength, vulnerability, and survival. This magnificent volume focuses on nearly 60 works completed in the last decade, including culturally adorned punching bags, three-dimensional figurative works, text-based wall hangings, painted works on rawhide and canvas, and light and video works. This first career-spanning volume of dynamic artist and musician Terry Adkins surveys three decades of multimedia installations and performances. Published in association with the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College
TERRY ADKINS RECITAL EDITED BY IAN BERRY, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY ADRIENNE EDWARDS, ANTHONY ELMS, OKWUI ENWEZOR, CHARLES GAINES, LAUREN HAYNES, GEORGE E. LEWIS, AND AKILI TOMMASINO Born in 1953 in Washington, DC, Terry Adkins grew up deeply interested in visual art, music, and language. His approach to art making is similar to that of a composer, and Recital was conceived as a theatrical score that punctuates and demarcates space, creating interplay among pieces in different media and from diverse bodies of work. The works of art in Recital pay homage to the legacies of figures such as Bessie Smith, W. E. B. Du Bois, John Brown, Matthew Henson, and John Coltrane, among others. In his sculpture, photography, and video, Adkins transforms and re-purposes a range of found materials, archival imagery, and reclaimed actions in a process that he calls potential disclosure. This book features detailed biographical information, an interview with the artist, and a selection of Adkins’s writings. IMAGE BUILDING HOW PHOTOGRAPHY TRANSFORMS ARCHITECTURE THERESE LICHTENSTEIN, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY MARVIN HEIFERMAN AND TERRIE SULTAN
Photography has both manipulated and bolstered our appreciation of modern architecture. With beautiful photographs of private and public buildings by Julius Shulman, Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and others, this book examines the central and active role that photography plays in defining and perpetuating the iconic nature of buildings and places. This volume shows how different photographers represent the same building, offers commentaries on the “American dream,” and explores changes in commercial architectural photography. Placing decades-old images alongside modern ones, Image Building depicts the idea of the comfortable middle-class home and the construction of suburbia as an ironic ideal. It presents the ways that public spaces such as libraries, museums, theaters, and office buildings are experienced differently as photographers highlight the social, cultural, psychological, and aesthetic conditions to reveal the layered meanings of place and identity. Looking at how photography shapes and frames our understanding of architecture, this volume offers thought-provoking points of view through an exploration of social and cultural issues. THERESE LICHTENSTEIN is the author of Behind Closed Doors: The Art of Hans Bellmer. Her articles have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, and Arts Magazine. She currently teaches at the Ross School in East Hampton, New York.

Endorsed by the Department of Effective Parenting and the Society for Creative Solutions, this collection of Very Official Forms offers a delightfully original way to help kids communicate their deepest feelings, desires, and secrets.
SIGN HERE… A MISCELLANY OF UNOFFICIALLY OFFICIAL PULL-OUT FORMS TO APPLY FOR DREAMS, PETS, MORE POCKET MONEY, REPORT FEELINGS, FILE SECRETS AND SO MUCH MORE GABRIELLE DJANOGLY, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ADÈLE MILDRED It’s hard to apologize. It’s hard to say thank you. Sometimes it’s even hard to invite someone over for a birthday party. This cleverly designed, slyly bureaucratic collection of “forms” makes dealing with these childhood issues a great deal less awkward and a whole lot more fun. Issued in impressively official script and language by the Department of Regret, Remorse, and Reconciliation, the Union of Childhood Revenue, the Ministry of Dreams, and other indispensable offices, these forms help kids say some of the hard stuff: “I’ve eaten the last piece of…,” “You’re the best sister in the world,” “Thank you for buying me stuff I need,” “Thank you for buying me stuff I don’t need.” And, because it’s important to record even your most private feelings, there are forms to verify that one’s parents are, indeed, aliens; that the surprise birthday gift was not actually a surprise; that you had a really scary dream; and other conundrums not easily expressed in person. Highly adaptable to meet the needs and desires of any boy or girl, these forms can be endlessly photocopied—and of course filed away by parents and grandparents for future reminiscences and chuckles. GABRIELLE DJANOGLY is a milliner and writer of children’s books. ADÈLE MILDRED is an illustrator, designer and milliner.
