$1.7MCompetition to Miami nonprofits in 2015 Hyundai Genesis: for other luxury vehicles Grant Miller CAR CORNER
The 2016 Hyundai Genesis brings new beginnings. The Genesis, having fully been renovated for 2015, now boasts a completely different look. For 2016, the Genesis has secured its place among many luxury vehicles — even with its appealing price ta — by bearing an elegant interior and various technological features. While this year's Genesis is not completely new, having already been redesigned last year, there are some minor but apparent 4 changes to itsS exterior. The headline B has changed as well as its headlights, which now come standard as HID as well as daytime LED lights. Additionally, the grille has been lowered and set wider. The most eyecatching feature of the Genesis' exterior is its beautiful winged badge, which states its model name but does not allude to Hyundai. What is most impressive is the Genesis' interior. Everything in the Genesis is beautifully laid out and presented, which includes the controls. The driver can easily decipher the purpose of each of the buttons and can control them easily from the driver's seat. Using high quality materials and simple, clean lines gives the interior an undoubtedly elegant and sophisticated feel. Within the beautiful interior, which includes leather upholstery, you also will find a plethora of technological features that include: keyless ignition and entry, heated 12way power front seats, a rearview camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror, an eight-inch touchscreen interface, seven-speaker audio system, Bluetooth phone and audio connec-

tivity, Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system, CD player, aux, USB/iPod interface and a navigation system with real-time traffic. The Genesis also is available in three packages: Signature, Tech and Ultimate with features such as panoramic sunroof, 14-speaker audio system, lane-departure warning, electronic parking brake, power trunk lid, matte-finish wood and aluminum trim as well as a carbon-dioxide sensor, depending on which package you get. As far as performance, with either the V6 or V8 engine you'll be guaranteed a powerful and smooth ride. The V6, which comes standard with rear-wheel drive and is available in all- wheel drive, boasts 311 hp and 293 pound-feet of torque. In EPA testing, the 2016 Genesis earned 18 city/29 highway mpg. The V6 is capable of 6.6 seconds zero to 60 while the V8 makes it in an impressive 5.3 seconds. Hyundai also emphasized a safe ride, fitting the Genesis with antilock brakes, automatic crash notification through their Blue
Link feature, SOS and roadside assistance. Most impressively, you can set boundaries for the car through their geo-fencing feature which, is perfect if you have young drivers in your household. You also can immobilize or slow down the car if it has been stolen. In government crash ratings, the Genesis earned five out of five stars. The 2016 Genesis has successfully pitted itself against several luxury vehicles by being a worthy competitor. Offering the same number of features and equally as elegant design as many high-end sedans while being very safe 4 and powerful with an appealingS price, the Genesis is a top contender for a high-end sedan. The MSRP of the 2016 Hyundai Genesis starts at $38,750.

Hyundai continues to add compelling premium market appeal to the Genesis sedan for the 2016 model year. HID headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights are now standard for 2016, while ultra-premium LED fog lights are now available on the 3.8 model, further enhancing the Genesis exterior lighting signature. Exterior
The Genesis expresses a truly modern design through distinctive exterior styling with a sleek, upscale appearance. Evoking a premium feel, the design cues display the Hyundai family aesthetic: simple and harmonious design with refined fluidic elements. The design features the modern Hyundai look, with a striking hexagonal front grille as a key geometric element, a dynamic crease accent running along the flanks of the car,
and a dynamic rear design. Design surfaces convey a kinetic elegance, relying more on voluminous body sections than surface details to create dramatic forms. Proportions demonstrate a long dash-to-axle length, longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs than its predecessor. These proportions clearly convey the performance rear drive configuration beneath the sheet metal. The single frame 3D hexagonal grille ensures the front end of the Genesis is not only striking, depicted in semi-gloss chrome, but also encompasses standard HID headlights, LED Daytime Running Lights and available LED fog lights. In profile, the Genesis daylight opening is expressive, with fluid lines and blended surfaces, a sleek C-pillar
helping to emphasize the sporty styling. The rear of the Genesis benefits from a sculptural aesthetic with jeweled, full LED taillights.

The cabin layout has been designed to benefit all occupants with a spacious, comfortable ambience. The simplification of the switchgear and instrument panel ensures an intuitive layout and open feel. This user-centric design has sought to connect the various interior parts effectively, particularly the center stack with the console, upper-instrument panel and B-pillar with the headliner. Genesis displays ultraprecise fit and finish, with ergonomic seat design and a generous, natural feel. Particular design attention has been paid to the storage of practical items such as mobile electronics of all shapes and sizes, along with the flexibility of the cup holders. Engine and Transmission
The Genesis 3.8 liter direct-injected Lambda engine is optimized to deliver a flatter overall torque curve at low rpm for superb drivability. This engine includes a three-stage variable intake system, triangular-pattern fuel injector for improved combustion; In keeping with its 5.0 liter V8 sibling, the Genesis 3.8-liter Lambda engine utilizes directinjection and produces 311 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 293 lb.ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm. All 3.8 liter engines are coupled to the same eight-speed automatic transmission design as the Genesis 5.0. This Hyundai developed transmission offers enhanced shift logic and speed, better acceleration, sport-mode mapping, shifting smoothness, and transmission efficiency. All eight-speed transmissions include SHIFTRONIC manual shift capability with ergonomically placed paddle shifters. Summary
Genesis represents a bold step forward for Hyundai, continuing to build upon its successful strategy of marketing its premium models under the Hyundai brand umbrella, rather than a costly, separate luxury brand sales channel. The Genesis is incredibly well equipped in every configuration, offering even more content than the first generation
Genesis. This content includes a generous suite of standard safety and convenience features. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price starts at $38,750.00, the one I drove included the following packages: Signature, Technology and Ultimate, and it came at $50,600.00 including inland freight and handling. The EPA fuel economy estimates 18 MPG City and 29 MPG Highway with the 3.8L Gasoline Direct Injection 6 Cylinder Engine. mlezcano@carsntravel.com

2016 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Sport Hits a High Note The Hyundai Sonata has been sold in North America since 1989. Now in its seventh generation here in the US the Sonata has changed radically over the years. This week’s test vehicle is a Sonata Sport 2.0T which offered a lot of standard equipment and an interesting mix of elegance and economy with a sporting edge. In fact, there is a 2016 Sonata to fill just about any midsize-sedan need. Want a budget-conscious 4-door? The base Sonata SE has you covered, while sporty sedan drivers will appreciate the Sonata Sport 2.0T. Hyundai even offers three different fuel-sippers, the Sonata Eco, and the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid. My Sport 2.0 Turbo model was not equipped with much optional equipment but rather came loaded with lots of standard goodies for price of around 28K.
When it was first unveiled the styling of the current generation was a bit of a disappointment. The previous generation featured curves, edges and creases everywhere it was very distinctive but perhaps a little too much. The Hyundai design team did a great job of taking that bold leap of the previous generation and dial in back to create as Hyundai executives describe it as “an athlete in a well-tailored suit”. There's still a sharp line of chrome extending from the headlights and down the flanks of the car, and Hybrid and Eco models all benefit from unique trim designed to enhance aerodynamics and improve fuel economy. There's not a lot of envelope-pushing here, but it's a good-looking car that will likely age well. Something that the previous generation will in my opinion not do well in the aging department. My Sport Model had a n a bit high performance neat aero treatment to the lower rear bumper and valance giving it some subtle nod to its sporting intentions. All 2016 Hyundai Sonata models get a new 17-inch touch-screen audio system with HD Radio, Bluetooth and USB smartphone integration, and Hyundai's Blue Link telecommunications suite. Automatic headlights are now standard across the board as well. It all complements a nicely laid-out and easy-to-use interior whose only real fault is being a bit on the bland side. However, I found myself liking more than the “look at me” six generation car inside and out. The hugely accommodating rear seat was a welcome and pleasant treat.
There are clever touches, such as the intermittent-wiper speed shown on the 4.2inch color display between the gauges. Its styling and overlook and feel now position the vehicle “smack dab in the middle of its major competitors such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry Plus the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, The Chevy Malibu, VW Passat, Chrysler 200 and its sibling the Kia Optima. For 2016 Andriod Auto and Apple Car Play make debuts as options on the Sonata as more high tech finds its way into the Hyundai across the board. My Sport model with its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 delivers 245 horsepower and 260 lo-fi of torque hooked to six speed automatic. Fuel economy is rated at 23 cities and 32 highways. Driving Dynamics were good for a mild sport sedan. For 2016 the Sport 2.0 model gains aluminum suspension components to reduce unsprung mass for improved handling. For those who would like a conventional sunroof is available on Sport models.
The Drive Select switch allows you to choose normal, sport or Eco settings. For the first time in recent memory I found the car drove best in Eco mode. Normally I would keep it in Sport all the time but something about the “throttle mapping and other computer elements made for me the Eco mode the most pleasant to live with day to day. Front Drive Torque steer is present when pushed and around town fuel economy might benefit with the addition of an 8 speed automatic In its lifetime the Sonata has played many different tunes but I find the move to more elegant and refined design and engineering philosophy to be the sweetest note to date.

Hyundai’s Accent is a money-saving machine by Gale Horton Gay Hyundai’s 2015 Accent GLS is good, basic transportation that is a budget pleaser upfront and in the long run. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is under $20,000, and it has an overall combined (city/ highway) fuel rating of 30 miles per gallon (26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway). One can save money at the dealership and at the pump. The Accent GLS is equipped with a 1.6-liter, four-cycle engine with sixspeed automatic transmission. There’s nothing particularly sexy about the Accent, but who cares when the ride—whether on local streets or highway—is comfortable, and it handles decently. If there is one glaring area of dissatisfaction for me during a weeklong test drive it is that it doesn’t have much giddy-up when one puts the pedal to the metal. Once the Accent reaches cruising speed— whether it’s 50 or 80—it’s fine. One can definitely hang with the big boys. Just know that it takes the Accent a little while to get there. While there’s not much in the way of bells and whistles here, the instrumentation is neatly laid out with everything logically within reach. Blind spot monitor, remote keyless entry and audio system with six speakers, iPod/USB and auxiliary
input jacks are a few of the limited features. The cooling system is the same way. It takes the Accent GLS a little while to achieve maximum cooling but once it does the cabin is adequately cool. It seats four fairly comfortably— five is possible but a little tight if the middle person is long-legged. There’s plenty of room in the trunk and lift the front floor and there are two additional storage spaces.
The vehicle received mostly fourand five- (out of five) star ratings in government safety tests (three stars in rear seat side crash tests. Two years ago, the Accent received MotorWeek’s 2013 Drivers’ Choice Award for Best Subcompact Car. I always like how Hyundai handles its price—simple and clean. The 2015 Accent has a base price of $15,745 and almost everything is included. The vehicle I tested came
with only two package options--$600 for the “Popular package that included steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, hands-free phone system and $800 for the “Style” package with extras such as satin chrome door handles, fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheel, rear disc brakes and headlights with LED accents. The final price with freight and handling is $18,080.
Hyundai’s accent is top practical pick 2015 Hyundai Accent By JENNy WHITE Staff Writer
One of my favorite vehicles, that I could really afford, is the Hyundai Elantra. Hyundai has done a good job of making the Elantra’s understudy and the lineup’s first rung vehicle, the Accent, ALMOST as good as the accolade-heavy Elantra. The 2015 Hyundai Accent gets a new grille, headlights and taillights, as well as a few changes to standard and optional equipment. With a base price just under $16,000, the Accent is a compact sedan that can be had hatchback-style as well. For that price, you get a comfortable car with a good list of standard equipment. The Accent sedan comes in one trim, the GLS and the hatchback can come in a slightly stepped up GS trim or Sport trim. I test drove the GLS sedan and it was far from stripped of necessities.
Tale of The TesT O highs: Room for full-size adults in front and back. O lows: No rear camera offered. O The Tale: A great choice for those looking for an affordable, compact sedan.
Some of the standards were 14-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, a driver seat armrest, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, a trip computer and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio and USB and auxiliary audio inputs. Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Hyundai Accent includes antilock brakes, stability and traction control, active front head restraints, front seat side-impact airbags and
side curtain airbags. Under the hood there’s a 1.6-liter direct-injection four-cylinder that produces 137 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. The front-wheel-drive Accent is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with fuel-efficient Eco mode. The Accent is perfectly powered for commuting and around-town driving. My test model was EPA rated for an average of 30 mpg, but I ended up with an average of about 27 mpg. The Accent competes with a few of my favorites in this segment like the Nissan Versa, the Honda Fit and the Ford Fiesta. I had a good selection of options added on like cruise, Bluetooth handsfree phone system, steering wheel audio controls, rear disc brakes, auto windows and projector headlights. My final price was $18,080. The Accent is a solid contender and if you’re looking for a compact car – check it out.
For a car with such a low starting price, the interior of the Accent belies it’s rock-bottom price. Not only does the Accent have attractive interior materials with a solid build quality, but the car’s sleek styling adds to the upscale feel. Seats are comfortable for drivers and riders. Drivers won’t be disappointed by the power either. Under the hood the Accent’s 1.6liter four-cylinder engine isn’t significantly more powerful than most rivals’ four-cylinder engines, but acceleration is strong and without as much of the effort and noise you find in competing cars,

Genesis Firmly establishes its luxury status 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 and 3.8 By JENNy WHITE Staff Writer
The 2015 Hyundai Genesis has been completely redesigned this year. By updating a few luxury materials, refining the style and design inside and out, I think Hyundai may have the best luxury sedan on the market – besides the point that the Genesis has the bottom line price in this segment. I recently got to test drive the V6 model and the V8 model and both were impressive. The Genesis 3.8 powers up from a V6, that’s rated at 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. The 5.0-liter V8 version puts out 420 hp and 383 lbft. Both versions are paired to the same eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters and a driving mode system that tailors to your driving preference (sport, eco, normal snow).

Hyundai Genesis a luxury sedan less costly than other options
Ryan and Marilyn Rees For several years, we have been recom-mending Hyundai vehicles to people who ask us what they should buy. We’ve found them to be extremely comfortable, enjoyable to drive and user-friendly for the most part. As we start a new year, the 2015 Genesis is a good one to start with. This full-size luxury sedan now comes with available rear-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and two engine choices. All new for 2015, the Genesis has a revised interior that’s on the minimalist side but still very attractive. Our test model had dark wood accents that blended nicely with the soft-tex-ture materials and touches of chrome. The model we tested came with the 311-horsepower, 3.8-liter V6. A 420-horsepower V8 is available but unless you’re really need-ing a little more power and low-end torque, the V6 should be more than capable for most people. Fuel economy with the V6 was rated at 18 city and 29 highway, which isn’t bad for a large sedan. There are three driver settings, normal, economy and sport. When you select sport, everything ramps up for added power and handling. Available in three trim levels, standard fea-tures include full power accessories, rearview camera, automatic headlights, keyless igni-tion, heated power front seats, tilt/ telescoping steering wheel, navigation, leather upholstery and electronic aids such as Bluetooth, USB/iPod jack, HD or satellite radio. The signature package adds a sunroof, powered steering wheel, driver memory, up-graded audio system and blind-sport and rear cross-traffic warnings. The ultimate level adds lane departure warning, power trunk lid, heads up windshield display, larger display screen and auto high beams that adjust to on-coming traffic. With the V6 engine, you can opt for all-wheel drive that includes heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and headlight washers. Our test model was fully loaded and came with a price tag of $49,950, which is thou-sands less than the entry level Cadillac CTS and far less than other luxury sedans such as the Lexus GS350 or Audi A6. The new Genesis is three inches longer, which offers more legroom for rear seat pas-
sengers. We both found the Genesis comfortable and offered a smooth, quiet ride on the highway. In short, there was very little we didn’t like about this Hyundai, including the luxury-level price and would recommend it to anyone. Ryan’s Ride Completely restyled for 2015, the Genesis sedan is on a par with most luxury sedans on the road. The interior is clean and simple and the exterior offers clean lines that look luxu-rious. The adjustable driver settings are great for different drivers. I found myself in the sport mode most of the time and could really tell the difference over the normal or economy settings, something I don’t always feel in other cars. It was cold when we tested the Genesis, so the heated seats and steering wheel were a real bonus. Fortunately, it didn’t snow, so we didn’t need to test the all-wheel drive. I’m a big fan of heads-up display. It helps keep your eyes on the road and the Hyundai version also includes a miniature speed limit sign as a reminder if you’re pushing it a little too much. The trunk is cavernous and made easier to access with the power operation. Several golf bags can fit back there with room to spare, not that I’ve been playing that much golf this winter. Hyundai also has created a different badge for the Genesis that can be confused with the Chrysler logo. However, Hyundai must be proud of the new logo because it is displayed on the ground at night when you open the driver door. A light under the mirror projects the image on the pavement, which is a great idea when exiting the car at night.
Marilyn’s Moment
There aren’t many cars I would put on the same pedestal as the Lexus sedans. However, the Genesis deserves that status. This is a very nice looking car on the out-side and the interior is understated but still very luxurious. The mattefinished wood is subdued but adds a certain flair. It also is very comfortable to drive. The seats are comfortable and being able to adjust the seats or steering wheel automatically helps. Rear passengers also are very comfortable with a folddown center arm rest with cup holders. A power sun screen can cover the back window on sunny days. As the main shopper in the household, the powered trunk lid is a nice addition as well. There are two cup holders next to the shifter and the arm rest storage area is cov-ered by a split lid. There’s another small stor-age area in front of the shifter. Many cars leave the headlights on at night when you exit the car. However, the illuminated Genesis logo on the ground was something I hadn’t seen before and was very helpful because it lit up a large area around the car. The Genesis is a very nice sedan, not a Lexus, but darn close.

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0 Turbo Hyundai’s Santa Fe Sport takes solid “family values” and adds a good shot of “flair”….and a bit of “fast ”.
Website Reveals the Truth A popular site is revealing the truth about millions of Americans. www.instantcheckmate.com
The Santa Fe is Hyundai’s family-hauler…and comes in both 5-passenger as well as a slightly super-sized 6 or 7 passenger version. We tested the shorter of the two….the 5-passenger size. The standard Santa Fe starts in the mid-twenties, and comes with a 190 HP 2.4 liter four. The Sport 2.0T ( turbo ) brings 265 HP to the house party…and lives up

To fuel your love of cars, visit the Autos section.
A number of things, actually. One, The Sport is faster than most of it’s competition….and handles a bit more crisply than some of the usual favorites. It’s noticeably more quiet than a few others as well. Much more of a drivers’ vehicle , in short.

And when equipped with Hyundai’s $4,350 “ultimate Package”, you’ll get most every amenity available these days, too. The Ultimate Package upgrades the Sport’s standard 18’s to 19”…and makes the standard leather ventilated and heated in the front and heated in the back. You’ll also get one of the largest sunroofs available…plus automatic headlamps, fog lights, roofrack, hands-free rear lift-gate, a heated steering wheel, blinid-spot monitor, lane-change warning, cross-traffic alert, dual-zone AC, and manual sunshades for the rear. The Sport Turbo is EPA rated almost the same as Hyundai’s non-turbo….19 city and 27 highway… on regular. We averaged between 23 and 24 in our average commute. And even fully-loaded, our Santa Fe Sport 2.0T stickered at $36,600 including destination fees. If you want all-wheel-drive, it’ll add $1,750. It’s not a stretch to see why.

Hyundai Genesis: Competition for other luxury vehicles G r a n t M il l e r CAR CORNER
While this year's Genesis is not completely new, having already been redesigned last year, there are some minor but apparent changes to its exterior. The headline has changed as well as its headlights, which now come standard as HID as well as daytime LED lights.

You also can immobilize or slow down the car if it has been stolen. In government crash ratings, the Genesis earned five out of five stars. The 2016 Genesis has successfully pitted itself against several luxury vehicles by being a worthy competitor. The MSRP of the 2016 Hyundai Genesis starts at $38,750.

ith gas prices always fluctuating even when it occasionally works to our benefit, we still need to save as much money as possible by making fewer trips to the pump here in Atlanta. Well, here are two automobiles that kept consumers in mind who enjoy riding in style for extended distances due to their remarkable miles to the gallon. 2015 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI SE WITH CONNECTIVITY
Sleek, solid and fun to drive, this Jetta shines. Volkswagen continues to surge forward with their solid lines of automobiles they have been wowing drivers especially in the U.S. Their fun commercials boasting long drives without stopping at the pump prove to be legitimate claims thanks to the 2015 Jetta TDI. Using diesel fuel (minus the traditional loud engine noise many have grown accustomed to in the past), its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine provides a combined 36 miles to the gallon (31 city/45 highway). Add that to this sedan’s long list of amenities including numerous mind-easing safety features (Intelligent Crash Response System); heated front seats; Titan Black Leatherette interior; Premium VIII touchscreen; 16-inch alloy wheels; and connectivity featuring Bluetooth for a mere $24,896 makes the Jetta a steal. A classy ride from an automaker that continues to impress. My, how times have changed. Once seen as a company for strictly the penny pincher, the Hyundai brand has flourished in the last five years thanks to their significant upgrades in mechanics, luxurious packages, generous warranties, and eye-popping styling to name a few. The Sonata Limited further solidifies this company’s growth. Drivers will enjoy the plush leather seats, LED taillights, hands-free trunk opener, Bluetooth connectivity, five-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, blindspot detection, and a 2.4 liter heart pushing out 185 horsepower while still maintaining an impressive combined 28 miles per gallon (24 city/35 highway). These, along with a lengthy roster of other standard features, justify this model’s Best-In-Class Total Interior Volume accolades for only $26,525. Add the highly recommended Tech Package featuring navigation, panoramic sunroof and Xenon lights ($3,500), and advanced safety features such as the Smart Cruise Control in the Ultimate Package ($1,550) and buyers will be in driving bliss for a very reasonable $32,510. 2016 Hyundai Tucson: Many subtle changes with a big impact
F
or 2016, Hyundai has made some subtle, yet important, improvements to the Tucson. The Tucson’s features, as well as its ride, are more refined. These changes, as well as its updated design, make the 2016 Tucson more elegant than its predecessors. Hyundai has made a great contender for the subcompact category. The first change you’ll notice in the 2016 Tucson is the exterior and size. Its sculpted, muscular design and eye-catching rims make for a more upscale look than the previous 2015 model. This higher-end look is also apparent in its interior which is simplistic, but in being so, more elegant. More importantly, the controls are comfortably and sensibly arranged. However, if hard plastic parts are a deal breaker for you, the base trim, SE, is not your best option. In the highest trim level, the Limited, there is much more soft-touch trim. Inside, you’ll find Hyundai’s newest five-inch touchscreen interface, stain-resistant cloth upholstery, full power accessories, a trip computer, and a heightadjustable driver’s seat. It also is roomier than the outgoing model. Hyundai has added 3 inches to the Tucson’s length and 1.1 inches to its width, which makes seating for up to four adults quite comfortable and allows enhanced cargo capacity. Additionally, the backseat features a reclining option as well 60/40 folding. Other standard features in the Tucson include Bluetooth phone and audio con-

nectivity, rearview camera, six-speaker sound system with a CD player, USB and auxiliary inputs, full-power accessories and privacy glass. The Limited adds LED headlights and taillights, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen, a navigation system, Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics and a six-way passenger seat. Hyundai also has made improvements to the Tucson’s build by making it with a stiffer structure and improved chassis which makes driving it feel much more engaging than the 2015 model. Under the hood, Hyundai has placed a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, which has 164 horse power, and 151 poundfeet of torque on the SE trim level. If you decide to get the higher Eco, Sport or Limited trims, the engine is upgraded to a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which puts out 175 hp and 195 pound-feet of torque. The base engine has a 23 city/31 highway mpg while the turbocharged engine has about 25 city/31 highway mpg, depending on the trim level.
Driving the Tucson is a very pleasant experience. The Tucson remains quiet even on the highway, its steering is predictable. The Tucson also is very safe, receiving top five-star ratings on side and frontal impacts from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2016 Tucson has a few seemingly minor changes that make a major impact. Its new build, as well as interior features make for a much more upscale compact crossover SUV. From the way it handles, to its exterior appearance, the 2016 Tucson makes its 2015 predecessor look like a lower-class vehicle. If you want a good looking, safe compact crossover at a very attractive price, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a phenomenal option. The MSRP for the 2016 Hyundai Tucson is $31,300. BEHIND THE WHEEL The 2016 Genesis is a revolution designed to leave Hyundai behind mylesKORNBLATT mk@autominded.com
Look closely at this sedan. There’s only one Hyundai badge on the rear, and everywhere else inside and out only carries large wingspan logos with the Genesis model name. That’s because by next year this all-new range-topping Hyundai will be the bread-and-butter of a new luxury brand. The Genesis name will be applied to a line of luxury vehicles. This will include the replacement for the full-size Hyundai Equus, and likely at least one SUV to follow. When the Genesis model name becomes a standalone brand, the sedan seen here will officially become known as the D80, and the new Equus will be the D90. On the surface this push into a premium brand looks much like what Toyota, Nissan and Honda accomplished decades ago with Lexus, Infiniti and Acura respectively. But for Hyundai this will be different. It enters into a market that has many more established players, including the Asian trio mentioned above. That’s why this sedan’s styling is unapologetically aimed at the premium car buyer leading with a big, bold grille that lies somewhere in between Audi and Aston Martin. The side carries a chiseled line from hood to trunk that almost could have come from Mercedes. It finishes in a rear end as uncluttered as a Lexus ES.
Hyundai might deny any of these inspirations, but its certainly aiming for these types of comparisons. That’s because the new Genesis brand’s big ace in the hole will be value. The lowest cost BMW 5-Series is around $50,000. That’s $12K more than it takes to get on the lowest rung of the Genesis ladder, and the base 3.8-liter motor in our test car produces 30 percent more power. The Genesis can be optioned up to the BMW’s price level, but then it comes loaded with features like a huge panoramic sunroof, Travel Link touchscreen infotainment stereo system, lane departure warnings, and a nifty heads-up display that even alerts the driver when the car is driving through a reduced speed school zone.

The company that should fear this competition the most is Acura. The RLX and the future D80 sedan compete in size and horsepower ratings. The Acura comes well equipped at its $55K base price, but the Genesis offers similar features for thousands less. Plus, the soonto-be D80 comes standard in rear-wheel drive and offers a powerful V8 option — two things that some luxury buyers want for bragging rights. But the real reason this is an Acura fighter is from the feeling behind the wheel. Lexus sedans gained status by providing quiet isolation, and BMW builds luxury still worthy of the racetrack. Acura has carved out its reputation for being somewhere in between those two, and now so does this Genesis.

On the road this new sedan is a model for calm luxury right up until the driver indicates it is time to stop being an introvert. The engine only breaks its whisper for a joyful growl when the accelerator is mashed against the floor. The steering wheel remains stiff and rock-steady unless it is moved quickly and aggressively a few inches. Then the whole car goes into a sport mode that takes on the characteristics of a happy puppy. This overall packaging feels well thought out, which translates into value for money. The new Genesis brand will be given a portion of existing shops for a dealerwithin-a-dealer feel. There will obviously be some problems with trying to sell luxury vehicles within earshot of people asking for free floor mats, but Hyundai has already been working on a plan for a few years. There’s already a concierge service in place where everything from test drives to service calls come to the customer. So instead of going to the dealer for maintenance, there is the option of a representative going to a home or business and swapping out the loaner vehicle at an owner’s convenience. This plan has premium customer potential that goes against the traditional ideas of luxury from the dealers. It’s a risky proposition, but then again, revolutions often are. It helps that the cornerstone of this upheaval is a well executed sedan worthy of spreading its wings beyond its humble parent. ■

KOVEL: ANTIQUES May I have this dance? BY TERRY AND KIM KOVEL
The tango was introduced in Argentina about 1902, but didn’t become the latest dance craze until about 1916. It spread to Paris, the United States and Europe, and remained a favorite until the 1920s. The tango was popular in upper-class dance parlors and has gone in and out of favor. Early tango dances were very daring, and in some countries they were restricted by law. But dancing couples were among the first wind-up tin toys for children in the 1800s. Around 1916, a dancing toy with figures of a man in tails and an elegant woman in a pink dress was made by the German Gunthermann Company (1877-1965). Wind the key hidden under the woman’s dress, and the couple dances in random patterns. Although the toy was sold in a box labeled “Tango,” it is sometimes called the “Waltzing Couple” or the “Dancing Couple.” The toy, in excellent condition with the box, sold at a James Julia auction in Maine in June 2015 for $3,851. Several other dancing couple toys have been made. In the 1930s, there was a Japanese key wind 6-inch-tall celluloid toy by Masudaya. The woman has a red dress. The toy sells today for about $40. In the 1960s, a Japanese company, Tokyo Plaything Shokai, made a dancing toy for Hikari Toy Products. The figures are tin with vinyl heads and the woman has a blue dress. It sells for about $360 to $400. The idea continued, and modern dancing toys have modern clothes, the latest dances, music and electronic controls. Q: I have a collection of Chinese mud
Q: I have about four vertical inches of old credit cards dating back the mid-1960s. What is the best way for me to find their value? A: Credit cards, metal charge plates, phone cards and other similar collectibles that replace money are now part of the numismatic collecting hobby. The earliest paper or cardboard credit cards were issued by airline and gasoline companies in the 1920s. Early and rare charge plates and credit cards can sell for hundreds of dollars. The book “Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide,” as well as the free online price guide at Kovels.com, has a credit-card category with prices of credit cards that have actually sold. There also is a club, the Credit Card Collector, that publishes a monthly newsletter and can help with rarity and value information.
figures and would like to know their value. Are there collectors interested in these figures? A: Mud figures are small partially-glazed pottery figures made in China in the 20th century. They originally were made for fish tanks or planters. Most figures are of farmers, scholars, workers or merchants. Other pieces are trees, houses and similar parts of the landscape. The figures have unglazed faces and hands but glazed clothing. They were made by hand, often by members of the village where they were made. Reproductions have been made. There isn’t a big market for mud figures. Price depends on size, condition and interest in the design. They sell online and at auctions for about $10 to over $100. Q: I collect memorabilia connected with movie cowboys including Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy and Tom Mix. A friend who moved here from Australia gave me his childhood collection, a box of Hopalong games and ads. None were items I have seen. Many were made in Australia. Were his movies seen in Australia? When? A: Hopalong Cassidy was a character in 28 books, starting in 1907. The character was in movies from 1934 to 1948. Sixty-six films were made. In 1948 William Boyd, the most famous star who played Hopalong, bought the television rights to the character from the author and the producer of the Hopalong Cassidy films. He later made 52 new TV shows. That gave him the ability to license the name to hundreds of products around the world. He toured Australia in 1954 so it is not surprising that later in the
This pair of tin figures can dance across the floor when wound with a key. It was made about 1916, when the tango was the most popular dance. It sold at a June auction for $3,851. 1950s Australian companies made board games, many types of candy often in collectible boxes or wrappers, Hoppy Cola (a drink), cake decorations, trading cards with pictures of Hoppy, pistols, holsters and other toys. The Hopalong Cassidy craze lasted just a few years after his 1954 tour, and Australian Hopalong items rarely are seen in the United States.

2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Equipada y espaciosa
¿Dónde quedó a deber?
2016 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID LIMITED REVIEW
1
Owning a hybrid is not what it once was, thanks to a worldwide trend pushing for more economically and environmentally friendly vehicles. Hyundai has been riding this wave for a few years now with their Sonata, and the 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited shows just how dedicated the South Korean automaker is to advancing hybrid technology. A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine and a 270 V lithium-polymer battery work in conjunction to create the comfortable and efficient ride that you’d expect from the four-door sedan. Power is adequately rated at a combined 193 hp, which is plenty for merges on the highway. In pure electric mode the car is incredibly quiet, both inside the cabin and outside, with only a hint of the simulated engine noise. The only interruption to the quietness is when the gasoline engine kicks in, which is both a smooth and unnoticeable transition.
Thanks to this hybrid system, the Sonata Hybrid celebrates 40 mpg city and 44 mph highway, for a combined 42 mpg. Even with these “green” numbers, the Sonata Hybrid drives just like a car with a fully gasoline-powered engine. One great thing about hybrid and electric cars nowadays is that they come in all shapes and sizes. You can go from the tiny Chevrolet Spark EV, to the Sonata Hybrid, which offers a spacious interior and trunk. In the front, adult passengers have a great deal of legroom to work with, while the backseats see a slight reduction in headroom. In the trunk is 13.3 cu. ft. of cargo space, only 3 cu. ft. less than the standard Sonata offers.
Aside from the spaciousness, Hyundai packed the Sonata Hybrid with a wide-range of technology features. For connectivity and media, there is Bluetooth media streaming; the SiriusXM Travel Link, which is included in the Ultimate Package for $4,500; Hyundai Blue Link Telematics System; and USB ports. Displaying all of this information is either the standard 5-inch touchscreen display, or the optional 8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, included in the Ultimate Package.
Setting the Limited edition apart from the SE are a number of interior features, such as the rear side window sunshades, 8-way power driver seat, 6-way power passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback and more. Hyundai made sure that the Sonata Hybrid stood out from the pack by adding some new exterior pieces. This includes the 17-inch “Eco-Spoke” alloy wheels, a redesigned front fascia and hybrid badging. There aren’t drastic differences between the Sonata and Sonata Hybrid, but when parked next to each other, you can tell. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited starts at $30,100 and is currently available for purchase.

The side carries a chiseled line from hood to trunk that almost could
have come from Mercedes. The Genesis can be optioned up to the BMW’s price level, but then it comes loaded with features like a huge panoramic sunroof, Travel Link touchscreen infotainment stereo system, lane departure warnings, and a nifty heads-up display that even alerts the driver when the
car is driving through a reduced speed school zone. Acura has carved out its reputation
for being somewhere in between those two, and now so does this Genesis. ■

Hyundai Genesis: Competition for other luxury vehicles G r a n t M il l e r CAR CORNER
While this year's Genesis is not completely new, havingS already been redesigned last year, there are some minor but apparent changes to its exterior. The headline has changed as well as its headlights, which now come standard as HID as well as daytime LED lights.

The Genesis also is available in three packages: Signature, Tech and Ultimate with features such as panoramic sunroof, 14-speaker audio system, lane-departure warning, electronic parking brake, power trunk lid, matte-finish wood and aluminum trim as well as a carbon-dioxide sensor, depending on which package you get. i with either the V6 As far as performance, or V8 engine you'll be guaranteed a powerful and smooth ride.
The 2016 Genesis has successfully pitted itself against several luxury vehicles by being a worthy Morecompetitor. Offering the same number of features and equally as elegant design as many high-end sedans while being very safe and powerful with an appealing price, the Genesis is a top contender for a high-end sedan. The MSRP of the 2016 Hyundai Genesis starts at $38,750.

2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has new engine and transmission
H
yundai has breathed life into the hybrid segment with the 2016 Sonata Hybrid. The Sonata Hybrid's most notable feature aside from its good looks and, of course, great fuel economy, is its sound. That is, the Sonata Hybrid is extremely quiet partially due to its silky-smooth ride that is completely unlike most hybrids. The second-generation Sonata Hybrid continues to visually differentiate itself from other Sonata models with unique wheels and front and rear fascia that improve aerodynamics while highlighting the advanced technology and efficiency. The Hybrid SE model delivers combined fuel economy of 42 mpg, a 10 percent improvement over the previous model. The heart of the 2016 Sonata Hybrid is the downsized 2.0-liter Nu GDI 154 hp four-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission that houses a more powerful 38 kW electric motor and clutch where the torque converter would normally be found. Sonata Hybrid’s Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED) delivers the same responsive, engaging driving characteristics as the gas-powered Sonata, while improving fuel economy through the use of the larger electric motor. The innovative transmission has been upgraded significantly and now uses an electric oil pump to improve efficiency. The Sonata Hybrid can operate solely on electric power at speeds up to 75 mph by decoupling the gasoline engine from the rest of the drivetrain. The lithium-polymer battery pack now fits under the trunk floor, which allows for a flat trunk floor as well as available 60/40 split-folding rear seats for excellent cargo volume at 13.3 cubic feet, a 10 percent improvement over the previous Sonata.
}2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has new engine and transmission
The Sonata is enhanced by a series of functional changes to the front and rear fascia that highlight its efficiency and the advanced technology below the surface. These visual changes also lower the coefficient of drag to a very low 0.24. Visual changes to the exterior include a unique larger grille, front and rear bumpers, front fenders, front and rear lights, chrome side sill moldings, Hybrid badging and new eco-spoke alloy wheel designs. A distinctive instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch color LCD multi-purpose display provides Hybrid drivers with additional information about the hybrid system’s operation. Sonata Hybrid comes standard with seven airbags, including a new driver’s knee airbag. Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Traction Control, ABS and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire pressure display and a rearview camera are also standard. Projector headlights are standard while HID headlights are available. There also are many active safety technologies to assist drivers and help prevent accidents, including Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist and a Lane Departure Warning System. The MSRP on the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid ranges from $26,000-$30,100. Grant Miller is the publisher of Community Newspapers. P l2016 tt B Hyundai C l R Tucson: b fit P l Many tt Hi h subtle changes with a big impact t Grant Miller CAR CORNER For 2016, Hyundai has made some subtle, yet important, improvements to the Tucson. Inside, you’ll find Hyundai’s newest fiveinch touchscreen interface, stain-resistant cloth upholstery, full power accessories, a trip computer, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. It also is roomier than the outgoing model. In addition, for Genesis’ equipped with the Head’s-Up Display, the BSD system indicators also project onto the windshield, nearer the driver’s view of the road, a segment first. Lane Change Assist (LCA) performs a similar function to help detect vehicles approaching towards its rear side at high speeds, especially during higher-speed driving, while Rear Crosstraffic Alert (RCTA) scans areas to each side of the car when drivers are backing out of parking spaces. Test Drive: 2016 Hyundai Azera punches above its weight class February 27th, 2016

Autoplay:
Part of the allure of owning a luxury automobile is visceral, the chest-out feeling of status that comes from driving a Lexus, Mercedes or BMW. Even my 9-year-old son can spot a Bimmer or a Lexus a mile away. Yet it takes decades of design dominance to build up that sort of brand cachet. This makes marketing cars such as the Hyundai Azera an uphill climb. The Azera, a fully capable and refined full-size sedan, has been on the market for more than a decade. Still, getting customers to sort through the Velosters and Elantras at a Hyundai dealership in order to bump into a near-luxury car is a challenge. Near-luxury is the best label for the Azera, which has many of the features of a typical luxury sedan without the fancy brand badge and dear price. As the Korea-based car company continues to improve its product quality (and sales), the Azera is a fine fit for Chattanooga-area drivers who want lots of bang for their bucks in the large sedan segment.

View other Test Drive stories by Mark Kennedy Its real-world competition includes the likes of Chevrolet Impala, Buick Lacrosse and Toyota Avalon. In that weight-class, the Azera packs a potent punch. For the past few days we've been driving a Diamond White Pearl Azera in top-of-the-line Limited trim. Its MSRP of $40,320 is about as far as you can stretch an Azera sticker. A modestly outfitted Azera lists for $31,000 and includes such premium standard features as navigation and keyless ignition. STYLING AND COMFORT Two of the Azera's biggest selling points are its interior roominess and eye-catching design. Inside and out, the Azera, which was redesigned in 2012, is one of the swoopiest sedans on the road. The exterior takes the basic design language of the attractive Sonata mid-size car and adds enough design flourishes to give the Azera its own personality. The grille is more dominant than on Hyundai's smaller sedans, and sweeps rearward into a sculpted hood. A huge, panoramic sunroof contrasts elegantly with the white paint on our tester to give the car a futuristic black-and-white look. A profile view showcases the Azera's most flattering angle. Floating character lines help define the Azera's shoulders, and chrome accent bars along the rocker panels add visual interest. Silver, 19-inch alloy wheels give the car a commanding presence and an aggressive stance. Designers spent a lot of time making sure the Azera has a buttoned-down rear-end design. The roofline gives the Azera a fastback look that melts handsomely into a sculpted deck lid. The integrated taillights wrap around the Azera's haunches. Inside, the cockpit is modern, with lots of gentle curves in the dash and door architecture. The driver's seating position feels elevated and outward visibility is good. Interior materials are of high quality, although not quite Lexus and Infiniti grade. There are a couple of idiosyncratic features on the Azera, including automatic folding mirrors that seem
to take on a life of their own and a warning system that tells you if the steering wheel is cranked offcenter upon restart. My sons, ages 9 and 14, were quick to point out that the back seats, as well as the front seats, are heated — a nice touch for families. And there's plenty of leg room in the back for adult occupants. The trunk is enormous, too, with cargo capacity rivaling some small SUVs. Standard features on our top-of-the-line Limited tester include LED fog lights, electronic parking brake, leather seating surfaces, an 8-inch touch screen, power rear sunshade, and an Infinity surround-sound audio system with satellite radio. A full suite of safety features includes land-departure warning, blind-spot detection and a rear-view camera. DRIVING IMPRESSIONS The Azera is powered by a smooth 3.3-liter, direct injection engine that makes 293 horsepower. On my daily commute up and down Chattanooga's mountain roads, the Azera never seemed over taxed. A sixspeed automatic transmission is workmanlike if not cutting edge. (Some brands have moved up to eightspeed trannies.) Interior noise is muted and the suspension is set up for comfort over sportiness. During several days of around-town driving the Azera proved a dependable companion; providing a relaxing — if not exhilarating — commute. For those looking for a little more sportiness, the larger Hyundai Genesis rearwheel-drive sedan stickers for only a few thousand dollars more. BOTTOM LINE The Azera, while not a household name, should be on your shopping list if roominess and value are priorities. Hyundai's standard 10-year, 100,000-mile power-train warranty is a big bonus. Fuel economy is estimated at 28 miles per gallon highway and 19 miles per gallon city. At about $40,000, the Azera Limited is outfitted with features comparable to a luxury car costing $5,000 to $10,000 more.

Luxury you can afford If you’re not into, or can’t afford, a European-made full-size luxury car, there are several choices available that offer a high level of luxury but at a much more affordable price. We recently tested the Hyundai Azera that came loaded with features and a price tag of $40,320. That’s well in the range of competitors like the Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 300, Buick LaCrosse or Chevrolet Impala, and much less than European models. However, the Hyundai comes with the 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, which isn’t offered by the others. The Azera also stands out with its sleek exterior with sharp lines and curves. There are two Azera trim levels, base and limited, which we tested. The Hyundai came with standard features such as navigation, 8-inch display screen, heated leather front seats and heated rear seat cushions, chilled glove box, keyless ignition, and

a full complement of electronic functions. The limited level adds 19-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, power rear sunshade and side window shades, auto high-beam headlights and safety features like lane departure, forward collision warning and rear parking sensors. The interior is well designed with a center console stack that is very functional. The roomy cabin offers more than enough room for rear seat passengers and a cavernous trunk. Power comes from a 3.3-liter V6 with 293 horsepower. A six-speed automatic/manual transmission drives the front wheels.
With an auto-stop function and eco driving mode, the Azera’s fuel mileage is rated at 19 city and 28 highway. As you’d expect from a luxury-level sedan, the Azera glides along the highway with a smooth and quiet ride. If you’re looking for a comfortable full-size sedan that won’t break the bank, the Azera would be a great choice. Ryan’s Ride -- I was immediately smitten with the stylish exterior of the Azera. Hyundai does a great job of breaking the mold with the styling of its vehicles. The interior also is different and very functional. The center console juts out from the dash for easy access to the various controls that don’t rely on the display screen, which offers a split screen with a navigation map on one side and audio information on the other. You can switch to one or the other with the touch of a finger. The front seats are pow-

Rear passengers aren’t cramped with ample leg room and a center console with cup holders. If you’re taking a long trip or a gang to the golf course, the huge trunk offers more than enough room. While $40,000 may sound like a lot of money, the Hyundai offers many of the same features offered by the Germans that cost twice as much. Marilyn’s Moment -Beauty and luxury are often in the eyes of the beholder. Such is the case with the Azera. It’s not

Hyundai might not be an automaker that comes to mind when people think about a luxury sedan, but the Korean company has dramatically improved its vehicles in every aspect in the past few years. I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute thinking about the Azera if I were in the market for a full-size sedan. only a nice looking sedan, but offers a luxurious interior with ample room and functionality. The full-size sedan is a pleasure to drive with power on demand and a smooth, quiet ride on the highway. The controls are simple to use with plenty of storage areas around the shifter and two cup holders, along with pockets in the doors. I didn’t use the chilled glove box but that might be a good accessory in the summertime. The rear seating is great with comfortable seats and plenty of legroom, even for taller passengers. LAURIE: Johnny, this car has a lot of bang for your buck. I loved it. We rarely start o! talking about price—but at a tad shy of $30,000, this car had everything included. Everything. JOHN: Wow, you did jump in with the price thing. My ‘first’ impressions were this is a sharp looking, sporty looking, bright white car, “Quartz White Pearl” to be exact, and we have had some good reviews of Hyundai products in the past, so I expected this one to be a good one too. I wasn’t disappointed. Lead o!, Kiddo. LAURIE: Okay, I’ll start with the comfort and convenience features: LED taillights and HID headlights that really illuminate the road at night—not quite daylight, but minimize shadows and flood the road ahead of you with a broad beam, and without glare. That factor alone takes the visual stress out of having to focus and concentrate on nighttime driving. By the way, HID means High Intensity Discharge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-

LAURIE: Speaking about light, the chrome exterior door handles casts a “welcome light”—a beam of light— under the handle grip. A thoughtful, useful addition that also contributes to Hyundai’s attention to easing nighttime driving. That, plus the hands-free Smart Trunk opener and proximity key entry with push button start make for easy entry and access into the car. JOHN: I’ll go back to something I said early on. “We’ve had good reviews of a number of Hyundai products.” Hyundai seems generally interested in growing the American market and much of what we have seen about their cars has been really good, so I think they are on the right track, so to speak. Speaking of Smart Trunk, for a sporty car, there was plenty of trunk space too. I like several things about the interior too, like the ease of entry and exit, the steering wheel, and the seats…

25to tryWANTED the newest Sonata a best buy sedan There are all kinds of great mid-size sedans on the market right now. The ever-popular Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion or Nissan Altima routinely top the list. However, the Hyundai Sonata and cousin Kia Optima have mounted strong challenges in recent years. We tested the Sonata recently and found absolutely nothing we didn’t like. It is roomy, economical and extremely quiet on the highway. There are six trim levels, including the Sport 2.OT, one notch from the top level that we tested. Power in the Sport comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a six-speed auto/manual transmission with paddle shifters. With 245 horsepower, the Hyundai returns solid fuel economy of 26 city and 32 highway. We averaged in the upper 20 range during our week behind the wheel in all kinds of driving. Hyundai also offers a hybrid power plant or a plug-in hybrid, neither of which we’ve tested. A 7-inch display screen is standard in all models except the Limited, which has an 8-inch screen. Both are an improvement over the 5-inch screen from last year. The larger screen makes for easier adjustments for the various options in the menu. The driver’s seat is fully powered with lumbar support. Other standard features include full power accessories, simulated leather seating (heated up front), LED daytime running lights, rearview camera, keyless ignition, tilt/ telescoping flat-bottomed steering wheel, HD and

satellite radio and updated smart phone operation for iPhones or Androids. The front cabin is roomy and comfortable with easy to use audio and climate controls. The rear seat is comfortable for two adults with fold-down seating for additional cargo space to the already spacious trunk. While our test model didn’t have it, Hyundai offers a unique automatic trunk opener when you stand behind the car for three seconds, key fob in hand. The exterior is clean and sleek with subtle touches of chrome, including a strip beneath the door panels. We’re asked a lot of the time for car recommendations and, lately, have not hesitated to recommend a vehicle from Hyundai. That goes for the Sonata. Ryan’s Ride – Every time I get behind the wheel of a Hyundai vehicle, I’m duly impressed. It wasn’t always that way several years ago. The truth is, there are no “bad” cars being sold these days. Manufacturers can’t afford to miss the mark because of the fierce competition in every category, especially the midsize sedan segment. Hyundai has risen to the challenge in a big way in the past few years and the Sonata is a great exam-

ple of the company’s progress. Car buying is an emotional experience, along with price. The Sonata we tested was priced at $29,885, which is a great deal for all the standard features that are included. Marilyn’s Moment – The Sonata is one of the quietest sedans I’ve driven in recent months. It glides along the highway with minimal road noise and soaks up any bumps. The controls are simple to operate and the larger display screen makes it easy to make changes without mistakes. The center control has a pair of cup holders, a large storage bin beneath the armrest and another covered storage area in front of the shifter. The seats are comfortable, front and rear. A folddown armrest makes the rear compartment even more useful with another pair of cup holders. I rarely use paddle shifters and didn’t see the need in the Sonata because the transmission handled those chores seamlessly. There’s more than enough power to merge into freeway traffic and I didn’t have to buy gas all week. As noted earlier, there are a lot of find sedans in this class. I would definitely put the Sonata near the top of my list. For more information on the Hyundai Sonata, scan the image below with your smart phone or device.

After years of mainstream manufacturers pumping out pretend “Sport” models Hyundai has delivered the real thing.
In fact, if you were able to drive Hyundai’s Sonata Sport blindfolded, you’d likely think you were behind the wheel of something German with names that have 3’s, 4’s, 5’s or letters like C’s.

little turbo lag. Acceleration is better than brisk….with flat cornering….good feel to the steering ….and brakes that easily bring you back down from inappropriate activities.
This power runs through a 6-speed automatic that’s eager to downshift and catapult you ahead…altho’ the engine puts out enough torque to move you nicely forward even without a downshift.
And the exhaust puts out a nice purr.
The interior will make you think you’re in an entry-level German sedan, too….with it’s basic-black leather interior. Heated with power lumbar, of course.
18” alloys, quad exhaust tips, blind-spot monitoring, HID leadlamps and rear LED lighting, hands-free entry and trunk, and dual auto temp control are all part of the package.
Price?
$29,760 including freight and handling.
Mileage? Rated at 23 city and 32 Highway. We got right at 29 in our usual two-lane / freeway commute.
Hyundai’s new Sonata dropped the former model’s “look at me, I’m different” diagonal side crease and now looks like a conservative little brother to the Genesis. While it’s a look shared by a number of other vehicles , it should wear well over the years.
Five-passenger comfort is on a par with others in this category….the Sonata is actually a reasonably roomy ride….and offers you five-star frontal and side crash safety….and four-star rollover protection .
At a price that’s a few thousand under the average transaction price these days, Hyundai’s new Sonata Sport is well above average in terms of performance and handling.

DRIVING ME CRAZY: 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0T By JOHN & LAURIE WILES % HEZI ARIS / & 4:34PM • MARCH 16, 2016 / ' AUTOMOTIVE (HTTP://WWW.YONKERSTRIBUNE.COM/SECTION/AUTOMOTIVE), ' RADIO (HTTP://WWW.YONKERSTRIBUNE.COM/SECTION/RADIO) / ( LEAVE A COMMENT (HTTP://WWW.YONKERSTRIBUNE.COM/2016/03/DRIVING-ME-CRAZY-2016-HYUNDAI-SONATA-SPORT-2-0T-BY-JOHN-LAURIE-WILES#RESPOND)
LAURIE: Johnny, this car has a lot of bang for your buck. I loved it. We rarely start off talking about price—but at a tad shy of $30,000, this car had everything included. Lead off, Kiddo. By the way, HID means High Intensity Discharge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highintensity_discharge_lamp) light. I looked it up on Wikipedia.com and the technology of an “arc lamp” would have had Thomas Edison captivated. JOHN: Wouldn’t ‘being able to see better’ fall under ‘Safety’ instead of ‘comfort and convenience’? Ow! Okay, whatever you say, dear. These old eyes appreciate anything that helps me see better at night … or anytime, so I love aids to night driving.
2016 Sonata 2.0T interior.
LAURIE: Speaking about light, the chrome exterior door handles casts a “welcome light”—a beam of light—under the handle grip.
Hyundai Sonata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Sonata) 2.0T rear interior bench seat.
LAURIE: The seats? They fit the ample curves of my body like a glove—and, with sport leather seating and heated front seats for both driver and front passenger, and a fully powered driver seat with lumbar support, it’s fully adjustable. JOHN: “Ample curves”. Interesting wording, hon. Ow! While we are on the interior, I want to mention the “D-cut” steering wheel, which is a break from the traditional round steering wheel in that the bottom of the steering wheel is a straight line, thus the “D” nomenclature. This was, after all, the Sport 2.0 Model and the steering wheel made it, well, “sporty”. Oh, and the “2.0” refers to the 2.0 Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_direct_injection) 4 cylinder engine which can generate 245 HP. That’s a lot of horse power for a 4 cylinder. There were comfort creatures we both liked in a car too. Tell them about the Dual Automatic Temperature Control feature. LAURIE: I love cars with dual temperature control. I know, I know… you always say that the driver gets to determine the car temperature. But when we don’t agree, it’s nice to have the power to regulate my side of the car without getting that look you give me when I fiddle with the climate controls. All mine, on the Hyundai Sonata, whether I’m a passenger or the driver! JOHN:All you need is one of those kiddy steering wheels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steering_wheel) and a fake brake pad and you’d be all set, wouldn’t you, hon? Ow! LAURIE: Johnny… you’re asking for trouble! Are you saying I’m a Backseat Driver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back-seat_driver)? Okay, moving on… Let’s talk about the 7” color Touchscreen display and audio, Johnny. Hyundai made a big deal about its Blue Link® Telematics System, which has
over 30 connectivity functions and core safety services, such as an agent-assisted advanced voice recognition system, car care features, which include a maintenance alert that helps you identify any problems you may be experiencing with your Hyundai Sonata and lets you know when it’s time to have the car serviced. And here’s your bailiwick, honey—the Hyundai Assurance Blue Link Connected Care package has enhanced safety features and automatic collision notification and assistance features, such as SOS Emergency Assistance at the touch of a dedicated SOS button, which marks your location so Hyundai operators can dispatch emergency services—that’s life-saving, Johnny. Imagine a car manufacturer going to such great lengths! JOHN: Yes, those are features we hope we, or anyone else, never have to use. That’s why the other safety features, like the back up camera, Blind Sport Detection with Read Cross-traffic Alert, Daytime Running Lights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytime_running_lamp), Traction Control (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traction_control_system) and ABS w/Electronic Brake Force Distribution are so important. LAURIE: And, of course, the hands free Android Auto™ integration system for your Smartphone, iPhone/USB and auxiliary input jacks are also standard. JOHN: We have become a country with technology required to be built into our vehicles. We need to power our computers from our car, integrate our smart phones, recharge them, stay in touch, be available; I’m not sure it’s all good, but it all seems necessary. Where did pleasant leisurely driving go? We need AM, FM, XM, and any other M someone will think of. LAURIE: Oh! The radio—which has fabulous sound—is easy to program but what’s more, has CD and MP3 capability—something increasingly missing in new cars today. JOHN: We must be ‘amused’; we must be ‘entertained’; remember Gladiator? Oh, but I digress from a very nice sports car to the world of driving, a topic for a much different writing I think LAURIE: Wow, where’s your head this morning, Mr. Philosopher? Actually, I was watching Downton Abbey in the bedroom while you were watching Gladiator in your study, so I never saw that movie. Why don’t you talk about the engine, honey—and the ride, with its sport-tuned suspension and steering and 18-inch alloy wheels. What a smooth ride! And the European styling? The Hyundai Sonata sport begs to compare with European fourdoor sedans twice the price—and more. That will get you back to the real world. JOHN: Ah, “To be, or not be. That is the question. Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune…” Wait, where am I? Oh, Pinehurst. Thank you, Honey, I was gone there for a moment. Whew, I did want to talk about the Drive Mode Select feature of this car, which I found fascinating. By pushing a button, handily located at your right hand behind the gear shift and next to the cup holder, called Drive Mode, you could choose ECO, Sport, or I suppose ‘regular’ driving modes, as on the third choice, nothing showed up on the panel display. This choice of driving mode allows for changes in throttle response, shift points, stability control and suspension dampening. And, in all honesty, you could tell a difference in the three, especially when the car was in ‘Sport’ mode – vroom, vroom. Let’s see, that is about everything I think. No, wait, ‘gas mileage’ was something I wanted to touch on – at 32 highway and 23 around town, the 26 mpg average was good I thought for a quick, good looking, responsive, and sporty Hyundai Sonata. Good job Hyundai! LAURIE: You’re right, Honey, I don’t think we left anything out. But then, neither did Hyundai with the 2016 Sonata Sport 2.0T. John and Laurie are a married couple in their “sensational sixties” who talk about today’s hottest, newest cars—and still manage to go to bed without getting angry at one another at night.
Driving Me Crazy Columnists Laurie and John Wiles.
John and Laurie Wiles have a combined driving (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_driving) history of ninety-five years. Laurie is one of only thirty-six journalists who are members of the prestigious New England Automotive Press Association (Tom and Ray Magliozzi, hosts of National Public Radio’s “Car Talk” among them.) Since 1998, Laurie has test-driven and reviewed over eight-hundred new model cars, trucks, and SUVs. John, a lifelong car enthusiast, has owned more than forty vehicles (so far.) John and Laurie recently got the idea of combining on a weekly car review. Laurie explains. “One day, a gorgeous blue Porsche Cayman pulled in the drive. Johnny slides behind the wheel, cocks an eyebrow, and says, ‘The name’s Bond. James Bond,’ like he’s Sean Connery or something. The next week, a Chevy Camaro rolls in. Johnny gets one glimpse of that muscle car and shouts out, ‘Can you say N-A-S-C-A-R?’ Once I realized he wasn’t speaking in tongues, I realized his voice, together with mine, might be fun. After all, ‘sixty is the new forty.’” John adds, “Men and women have very different opinions about cars and I think it’s good for people to get an understanding of what a couple think about a car, and what they like and don’t like. Of course, that doesn’t mean they have to agree on everything—you know, like the way it is in a marriage.” Laurie, whose professional name is Laurie Bogart Morrow, is the author of a dozen books, including The Hardscrabble Chronicles (Penguin Putnam) and The Giant Book of Dog Names (Simon and Schuster. John is a retired program manager in the National Defense contracting industry and a teacher in the public school system. They live happily in Pinehurst, NC.

Auto Nsider Review: 2017 Hyundai Elantra Limited April 25, 2016 4:23 PM By Daryl Killian

What is this thing?
"
Yes…more than most vehicles , Hyundai’s completely re-designed 2017 Elantra defies easy description.
2
Is it an economy car so stingy with the gas that you find yourself wondering ”who needs a hybrid”?
Is it a high-tech luxury car, with virtually every gigabit of current connectivity packed into a smaller than expected body?
And hey, let’s talk about that body. Hyundai took what might have been one of the most smartly styled compacts and “normalized “ it….replacing the swoops and curves with a more Gemini-like look….giving the ’17 Elantra the hexonal family face up front, and smoother flanks.
73°
And then we could talk about size. While considered a compact competitor to Corollas, Civics, Mazda 3’s and such, the re-design has given the new ’17 Elantra enough room inside to be considered a midsize ride by the EPA. ADVERTISING
So where to start?
Let’s start with something easy……economy.
Depending upon SE or Limited trim, the ’17 Elantra is rated at between 28-29 city and 37- 38 Highway. And hey…..it gets that and more. In a mixed commute, I averaged a hair over 35 in a week’s driving….and with a 65 MPH flat-freeway ride we were a little north of 40 MPG. Impressive.
And if that’s what you’re looking for in a ride, we could stop right there. You’d have a roomy, 4-5 seat four-door sedan with a 2.0 liter, 147 HP four and a 6-speed automatic…..or a stick shift for you purists.
You’ll have a reasonably attractive cloth interior and 15” steel wheels with wheel covers….a six-speaker stereo with Sirrus, air, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel….and Hyundai’s now-famous 10-year / 100,000 mile warranties…..and you’ll be out the door for under 20K even with an automatic.
Want more?
Only $800 more will get you a 7” touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear-view cam, auto headlights, 16” alloys, cruise control, hands-free Bluetooth, and heated exterior mirrors
Most Elantras you see on the lot will probably have at least this level of
trim….and your sticker will still be under 20K.
Another $1,300 will get you a good handful of those little luxury and safety touches that we’ve all come to appreciate. You’ll get heated front seats, hands-free trunk release, door handle approach lights, a proximity key with push-button start, allowing you to just keep the keys in your purse or pocket, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual air, LED running lights, and that all-important blind-spot detection with rear-traffic alert.
Look for the Feds to mandate some or all of those features in the coming years.
We got lucky, tho’, and got a fully-loaded “Limited” to test.
It’s the Limited version that can take what’s an excellent economy car and elevate it to “Little Limo” status.
For just over 23K to start ( including freight and handling ), the Limited gives you soft, perforated and heated power leather seating with lumbar, and the six-speed auto offers ECO and Sport settings that also alter your steering feel and suspension.
17” alloys top it off.
We had $4,500 in packages on our little leather-lined limo, which brought it to within a few thousand of 30K, but that still left us a full five thousand under the average sticker price of a new vehicle these days….and got us just about everything.
“Everything” being sunroof, heated rear seats, 8-speaker Infinity audio, nav w. 8” touch screen, auto-diming rearview mirror, Android Auto + Apple CarPlay, HID headlights with “bend-around-the-corner” technology, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, smart cruise control, lane keeping assist, and it’ll memorize your front-seat settings for two different drivers.
So…..under-20K economy car or high-twenties high-tech showpiece? Whatever your preference, the all-new 2017 Hyundai Elantra allows you to customize your ride exactly as you like.

25to tryWANTED the newest Hyundai Elantra gets a brand-new look for 2017 The all-new 2017 Hyundai Elantra doesn’t look like a small sedan, especially when you compare it next to the Honda Civic or Mazda 3. The Elantra has a much larger rear seat and just feels roomier all around. This is the first restyling in five years for the Elantra and the result is a little more mature, refined look. The grill is bigger with headlights sculpted into the sides with a “string of pearls” LED treatment for the foglights. However, Hyundai retained much of the classy look from before. There are three trim level and two engine choices. We tested the top-ofthe-line Limited edition that was loaded with a bevy of electronic and safety features for a cost of $27,710. The lengthy list of equipment includes full power for the doors, windows and mirrors, keyless ignition, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, heated leather seating in front, Bluetooth and cellphone integration. Two optional packages are included on Limited models with hands-free trunk opener, blind spot and rear cross-traffic warning, 8-inch display screen, navigation with voice commands, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and driver seat memory. The controls are well placed with large knobs that makes changes much easier. Audio and cruise controls also are on the steering wheel. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is standard in the SE and Limited models with a 1.4-liter turbo in the Eco mode that also comes with a 7-speed automatic for enhanced fuel economy. The 2.0-liter is rated at 147 horsepower with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. There

are three driving modes, normal, economy and sport, that you can switch back and forth with the push of a button. Fuel economy is listed at 37 highway and 28 city. The Elantra is a pleasure to drive with better than decent handling and a very quiet ride, especially for a small sedan. Honda and Mazda have been the main players in this segment, but Hyundai has joined the battle with the more refined look of the Elantra. Ryan’s Ride – I wasn’t a big fan of the previous Elantra’s styling. It was a little too radical for my tastes but the 2017 version is much cleaner and appealing. Not only is the exterior more refined, the interior has been seriously upgraded with higher class materials and overall layout of the controls. The 2017 model is slightly larger than before, offering a little more room for rear seat passengers while sacrificing some space up front and in the trunk. Most people won’t notice the difference. The 147-horsepower engine may not sound like enough, but the Elantra responds excellently and gets you up to highway speeds smoothly and quietly. The trend lately has been to add electronic and safety features in smaller sedans, like the Elantra, at an affordable price. In our test model, there wasn’t much lacking, other than

maybe paddle shifters on the steering wheel. We tested the larger Hyundai Sonata recently, and while larger, it didn’t have many advantages over the Elantra in terms of equipment and comfort. The Elantra is just a tidier package for those who don’t need a large sedan. Marilyn’s Moment – We’ve tested a lot of sedans in the $30,000 price range and they all have a lot of the same features, just packaged differently. The Elantra comes in some $3,000 less than that but still offers a bevy of features you might not expect, especially with some of the safety features. I liked the interior layout with plenty of storage areas and a large display screen with easy to operate controls. Hyundai’s rear view camera is excellent with great definition and guide lines to assist your view behind you. I found the Elantra very quiet on the highway and even under acceleration. The Hyundai responded quickly and smoothly. The sleek exterior makes the Elantra look much more expensive than it is. The improvements for 2017 are noticeable, especially if you’re parked near the previous generation. We owned a Kia Forte, a sister car to the Elantra, and I liked it very much. It had the same features as the previous Elantra. The 2017 version of the Elantra takes everything up a notch, especially in terms of features and driver comfort.
