About Investing Investing one’s money is generally a matter of weighing three factors: risk, return and time Risk is a way to describe the fluctuations (or volatility) in the rate of return and the degree to which the rate of return will go up or down. Return is the earnings and gains on one’s capital over a measured period of time. Time is the length of time an investor plans to maintain an investment, as it helps to evaluate the appropriateness of an investment’s level of risk and return. Finally, an investor should look at diversification as part of his or her investment strategy. This will include investments across a spectrum of asset classes (i.e. stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.), domiciled both locally and internationally, and in varying currencies.

The South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce is now officially known as The Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago. The geographical description “South Trinidad” no longer accurately reflects the membership of the Chamber. The change in name signifies the evolution of the Chamber over the past few years, and underlines the fact that the Chamber’s 270-plus member companies come from across Trinidad and Tobago and beyond. The vast majority of our members operate within the energy sector, and the Chamber is also recognised by stakeholders and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago as being the representative association for the energy sector. For many years the strategic focus of the Chamber has been on the energy sector and related sectors of the economy. The Energy Chamber continues to lead with various initiatives, including our awardwinning Safe-To-Work project that focuses on creating industry-wide HSE pre-qualification requirements; and by providing business opportunities for our members through our trade missions, as well as key information on energyrelated issues through our premier annual Energy Conference and luncheons.

Vernie Shield Chairperson

In 1936 a Tobago Chamber was formed that in 1973 amalgamated with the Trinidad Chamber to become the Tobago Division – Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Representing the interests of Tobago-based companies, it acts as lobbyist to the Tobago House of Assembly on issues affecting business and the community. It has a seat on the board of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber and raises issues at national level that concern Tobago. Thus, the entire resources of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber are available to the Tobago Division. The Division of some 60 members operates under an annually elected chairperson and management committee, with sub-committees reporting on the Air/Sea Bridge, Tourism, Business Development and Health, among others. The membership meets monthly to ensure that the Division stays current and effective. Published in 2009, the Tobago Business Guide & Directory showcases the membership and lists a whole range of non-member information for the benefit of trade missions, investors and local businessmen.

Cargo Consolidators Agency Limited (CCA) was established in 1976 to serve the growing manufacturing, petroleum and energy sectors in Trinidad and Tobago. Over the last 34 years, CCA has grown into a full-service freight forwarder, offering a wide range of services and solutions for imports, exports and supply chain logistics in general. CCA was built on the principles of honesty and integrity, and over the years we have asserted that the company must grow only so fast in order to maintain the high level of service our customers have come to know and enjoy. With a staff of 60, operating out of three offices located in Port of Spain, Point Lisas, and at Piarco International Airport, we have managed to do just that. CCA offers a full range of air and ocean export services as well as a full packing and loading facility in Point Lisas, from where we offer Less Than Container Load (LCL) services to the CARICOM region, the US and Europe. CCA is an IATA-certified freight forwarder, and our staff are fully trained in the handling of dangerous goods for air and ocean freight. Through its vast network of agents worldwide, CCA offers air and ocean import services from almost any major city in the world and is particularly strong in cargo originating from Houston, Miami and Europe. In an effort to offer our customers value-added services, CCA has partnered with Aviation Business Limited to establish the first and only 24 hours/7 days per week customs warehouse in Trinidad, located at the south side terminal of Piarco International Airport, where customers can clear their cargo at any time without any additional costs. This is consistent with maintaining our position as a leader in the freight forwarding industry in Trinidad and Tobago.

Of the above, transshipment represented 58%. Port of Spain is becoming a major hub in the Eastern Caribbean, now offering five shipto-shore cranes. There were 54 calls, with car vessels of 12,000 cars – half the 2008 volume. Bulk vessel tonnage totalled 110,000 tons over 24 vessels. Break bulk cargo totalled 45,000 tons over 13 vessel calls.

Carvalho’s Agencies’ principal business is cruise shipping. We currently handle over 90 per cent of the cruise market in Trinidad and Tobago, serving three ports of call, Port of Spain, Scarborough and Charlotteville. Over the years we have assisted cruise lines in making their decisions to include this destination as a port of call. Those who pass on Wrightson Road and see huge cruise vessels alongside the Port can immediately Charles Carvalho Sr link these ships to Carvalho’s Agencies. CEO In addition to serving these three ports in Trinidad and Tobago, in recent years we have been assisting our cruise lines with their vessels calling at other ports in the Caribbean, and more recently Guyana, making Carvalho’s that very important link between the cruise lines and the islands of the Caribbean. As port agents for these ships, our responsibilities require commitment and dedication to deliver the services needed. These include making arrangements for crew changes, providing medical attention for crews and passengers, hotel accommodation and transport, vessel repairs, and the supply of local products and services, while paying particular attention to passenger and vessel safety while in our ports.
