roviding casework consultancy, expert training (DNA, body fluids and expert witness forensic awareness, sexual offences investigation), quality consultancy (auditing, root cause analysis, quality systems review, recommendations for accreditation) and bespoke services, Ethos Forensics can count on its client list a number of top and varied names including LGC Forensics, Forensic Access, Axiom International, First Forensic, Forensic Scientific, Expol, Sancus Solutions and various legal and academic organisations. “I established Ethos Forensics with the intention of delivering training and impartial, ethical, qualitydriven forensic consultancy to defence counsel,” states founder Sue Carney, who, has drawn on her skills and experience as a senior forensic scientist at the UK Forensic Science Service to build-up an impressive reputation for her firm towards providing a range of expert forensic and scientific services. Carney’s field of expertise is the examination of body fluid evidence and the interpretation of DNA profiling results. Having consulted on a range of high-profile cases incorporating forensic biology, low template DNA techniques and blood pattern analysis, providing advice to counsel and expert testimony at court, Carney’s area of particular expertise revolves around cases involving sexual offences cases, which, according to her, often comprises the most complex forensic interpretations. She says: “In many forensic scenarios much of the evidence is timedependent. This is particularly true of sexual offences casework. “Biological evidence deposited on the body or inside a body orifice during sexual activity persists for a limited time, and loss is accelerated by other activities. It’s vital that forensic medical examinations are carried out effectively and at the earliest opportunity to maximise the recovery of trace evidence.” An accomplished trainer Carney has written and presented various courses including forensic strategy setting, sexual offences investigation and DNA profiling to police, medical and legal professionals. She also holds professional membership of The Forensic Science Society besides being a member of the Home Office Centre for Applied Science and Technology Forensic DNA Expert Community and an expert volunteer for human rights charity, Reprieve. The company provides bespoke courses and lectures tailored to specific client needs as well as peer reviewing and mentoring support to forensic providers. In addition, it offers quality systems consultancy to forensic providers and testing laboratories working to ISO 17025:2005, including review of existing quality systems and recommendations for improvement, design and delivery of bespoke quality audits to ISO 17025, support in implementing quality systems, and root cause investigation of existing quality issues.
