Etiquette

What is your Handicap?

We all have one. You know that annoying golf partner who just doesn’t seem to understand how to behave on the course. *Hint if you don’t its quite possible its you! Don’t be THAT Guy! Golf etiquette is arguably one of the most important parts of the game of golf. The golf etiquette you display on the course will say more about you as a golfer and a person than anything you ever do with your clubs! Etiquette should be practiced by EVERYONE on the course

T

he love of the game, the understanding of the traditions and the respect for those you play with, all come together in the golf etiquette you exhibit on the course.

The guidelines for good golf etiquette are what they are for several very important reasons: Many of them relate to the safety of golfers, many relate to pace of play (which helps keep the game enjoyable), and other rules of golf etiquette relate to maintaining the quality of the golf course. In other words, golf etiquette is an essential part of the game. And it’s something that newcomers to the game often learn as they go - on the course. And often experienced golfers, need to remind themselves of.

“Remember a golfer is a golfer, and proper etiquette applis to all of us.” Golf is played, for the most part, without a referee and so the integrity of the player to take care of the course and abide by the rules is crucial to the sport. Put simply, golf etiquette is a series of guidelines that exist to show players a degree of fairness which you would expect to receive in return. It is about showing respect for the course and ensuring the game is played safely. When playing a round of golf players must endeavor to keep the course as they found it, trying to ensure all players get to play it in the same condition you have. Good golf etiquette therefore means when playing from a bunker, you must take over any footprints and uneven sand when leaving, therefore giving the next player the fairest of chances to get out of the bunker. Players should avoid making damage to the course by repairing all divots, ball pitch-marks and spike marks from golf shoes. Also try to avoid making any unnecessary damage to the course when taking practice swings and placing the flag stick etc. Golf etiquette also involves playing at a good pace, trying not to hold anyone up who is playing behind. It is your responsibility to keep up with the game in front www.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

Golf is a game that requires a lot of concentration. If you are trying to make a putt, or hit your tee shot into a narrow Fairway, it will be much more difficult if someone is laughing, rattling their clubs, handing out their business cards or running around the tee or green. and if you fall a hole behind, you should invite the game behind to play through. Players should be ready to play when it’s your turn and put your bags beside the green on the way to the next tee. Slow play is currently one of the main issues surrounding golf, with rounds sometimes lasting well over 4 hours. Therefore it is important all players try to play at a decent pace to minimise the amount of time waiting. When following good golf etiquette, you should always show consideration for other players on the course and take care not to not disturb their play by moving, talking or making unnecessary noise. When teeing off, ensure it is your turn to play and do not stand close to the player, directly behind them or directly behind the hole when a player is about to swing. When putting you should try not to stand on a player’s line to the hole or cast a shadow on the player’s line which may distract them. Players must wait until the game in front is out of range before playing and if your ball is heading in the direction of another player you must shout “fore” to alert them. If you follow these simple guidelines in terms of golf etiquette, you will be able to enjoy your own round whilst not impairing the enjoyment for anybody else sharing the course with you..
