Video Analysis and Trackman your fast track to success

book a lesson with steve williamson

A

A Typical Lesson fter a short warm up, you will hit a series of shots with a seven iron and driver, the Trackman radar will record data from all these shots. Two cameras will simultaneously record a down the line view and face on view of both shots.

Why guess what you can measure?

The capture from both cameras together with the Trackman data is then analysed with your input to establish the best way to bring about realistic achievable improvements. This is often accomplished with drills and exercises which don’t always involve hitting golf balls.

Without Trackman you have virtually no chance of understanding whats really happening in your golf swing, a camera alone will only show two dimensions, Trackman reveals three, you will be amazed at what it reveals.

It is not always possible to make wholesale changes to swings that have been ingrained over many years, and with this in mind often I work with the players existing technique to achieve a return to form.

Video Swing Analysis Video analysis combines with trackman data in all lessons, ensuring that faults unseen by the naked eye are not missed. Video analysis is essential to understand what is really happening from takeaway to impact which usually takes place in less than a second.

n independent property consultant, member of FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation, CEI, The European Real Estate Confederation, and GIPE, one of the leading Spanish Real Estate Associations, British property specialist Richard A Rooke runs an extremely well-known real estate agency and consultancy on the Costa Blanca. With over four decades’ unique and hand-on experience in the real Estate industry in Spain, the UK and abroad, and backed by officially-recognised Spanish professional real estate qualifications, Richard A Rooke offers an expertise that is second-to-none when it comes to advising on properties “We are always on the lookout for new developments which sometimes provide better opportunities for investment than on the Costa Blanca. some of the existing projects, keeping a careful eye on current market trends. The company’s objective is to offer Established on the Costa Blanca for its clients the best value for money available for the type of over 30 years, Richard’s firm, which property required.” operates by the same name, provides a wide choice of meticulously-selected properties at competitive prices.

“We can find you apartments, duplex, maisonettes, terraced houses, and villas whether close to the beach, on golf courses, marinas, or any other location, at prices to suit most pockets, for holiday, retirement, or investment purposes, for private or corporate portfolios,” he says.

According to Richard, prices vary in accordance with the property and location among other factors. However, those seeking to buy properties through his office can be assured of receiving assistance right through the whole purchasing process including property selection, contracts, searches, deed-signing, translations, legal and tax requirements, registration, bank accounts, and after-sales service, thereby avoiding any pitfalls that might be encountered on the way. The firm can also arrange finance, on the spot in Spain, at advantageous interest rates, if and when required. Richard believes what separates his consultancy apart from others is its wealth of experience, its knowledge of the Spanish real estate industry, its direct contacts with leading builders and construction companies now operating along the Mediterranean coast, and its ability to find the right property at a price that best matches its client’s requirements, be it a studio apartment near the beach or a luxury villa on a golf-course. “We are constantly on the look-out for new projects and urbanisations that we

With certain builders we actually co-operate as consultants in the design and project development, incorporating our ideas and knowledge of our customer’s requirements and features for instance.” Speaking on the effect, if any, that Brexit may have had on British investors looking for property investment in the Costa, he says: “Apart from the initial preoccupation and concern over the Brexit decision and a fluctuating exchange-rate, there hasn’t been any significant change of attitude from British investors or buyers, as most people now realise that it will take some time to negotiate all the changes that will have to be made. So as far as Brexit is concerned it is business as usual.” Already firmly established as one of the market leaders on the Costa Blanca, Richard is confident that as long as the sun keeps shining on the Mediterranean coast, the British, Europeans and Scandinavians will continue to buy property in Spain, and that “we will continue to offer them the same excellent service that our present day customers are receiving now”.

T

he Championship Course at 6,603 yards but with no par fives on the men’s card is a substantial challenge for even the best golfer. The SSS off the Blue tees is 73 against a par of 68. Every hole presents an examination in shotmaking and accuracy; a stroke given away to the course is difficult to recover. It is also a beautiful place to play golf. The views of the River Alde and glimpses of the North Sea, grey one day blue another, are enough to raise the spirits even when the score is not quite up to expectation. The Ladies do have a number of par fives on their card and the appeal of the course is evident from the number of occasions on which the English Ladies have held their Championship at Aldeburgh. Mickey Walker, one of the most distinguished English lady golfers, regards Aldeburgh as one of her favourite courses, a great compliment from someone who has played all over the world.

www.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

Aldeburgh Golf Club welcomes visitors to both the Championship and the River Course on weekends and weekdays throughout the year. “And for anyone who, given the choice between a literary talk in Aldeburgh and a round of golf, would guiltily opt for the latter, the Aldeburgh Golf Club is within easy reach and, as important, notably friendly and un-stuffy”. - Craig Brown in ‘The Oldie magazine.

Catering The House Manager and his team provide a full catering service throughout the day using fresh locally sourced food. Aldeburgh’s clubhouse is traditional, comfortable and welcoming. The Terrace is a relaxing place to sit and enjoy a pint of Adnams bitter or a light lunch whilst watching players approaching the ninth green.

Full lunches are available in the Dining Room which has extensive views over the course. There is a bar menu available in the lounge offering hot and cold daily specials, homemade soups, freshly made sandwiches and hot paninis. Coffee and a variety of teas, together with homemade cakes, are available throughout the day. Breakfast and evening meals are available for groups by prior arrangement. House Manager: 01728 452408 Accommodation: visit the Club’s website at: www.aldeburghgolfclub.co.uk for information on local hotels and cottages etc. Fast-draining, sandy soil ensures that it plays well throughout the year; in winter the greens and fairways are in excellent condition with no need for preferred lies, temporary greens or tees. It is a great course, described by agronomist and R&A adviser Alistair Beggs as “having amongst the best playing surfaces in the land” Aldeburgh is a two-ball course, and promotes foursomes (alternate shot) regarded by many as the finest form of the game. A foursome usually takes no more than 3 hours, so a round of singles and a foursome can easily be played in a day, even at weekends. There is a green fee specifically for foursomes players.

Thorpeness

GOLF CLUB & HOTEL Braid’s Coastal Classic: Thorpeness Golf Club Almost a century ago, a wealthy Scottish barrister dreamed of creating the perfect fantasy holiday village for his family and friends. Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie chose the fishing hamlet of Thorpeness on England’s South East coast, and being a lover of golf quickly asked fellow Scotsman - the five time Open Champion James Braid - to build a golf course he would never tire of playing. That golf course, like the village itself – and other famous courses in the world of golf - is best known by just one word, Thorpeness. Braid crafted 18 holes in 1922, on sandy fast draining heathland, across a low lying coastal plain close to Aldeburgh. Today, Thorpeness Golf Club is regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Suffolk, and, courtesy of its 36 bedroom golf hotel – including the James Braid Lodge rooms - has a reputation as one of the most golfer friendly stay and play destinations in the UK. What makes Thorpeness so appealing to golfers is the mild micro climate that delivers ideal golfing weather. The Suffolk coast has one of the lowest rates of rainfall in the British Isles as well as an average two hours more sunshine per week than anywhere else in Britain. This unique climate means the course rarely closes and remains in excellent condition during the winter, with no winter tees and greens and a full course in play throughout. Thorpeness is so popular with visiting golfers in winter that it operates a well subscribed Winter flexible membership from October to March and attracts many members from golf clubs in Essex and Cambridgeshire. The 6,421 yard course winds through pines, firs, heather and gorse on a

low lying coastal plain in an AONB (Area of outstanding natural beauty) and a designated SSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). During the summer the golf course is a riot of colour and sound. Rare flora and fauna burst into bloom and shrill bird calls mingle with the thud of irons on sandy turf. Teeing off early in the morning you might catch a glimpse of rare bird and wildlife, including Thorpeness’ noble Stag and his harem of female hinds, or hear the long churring call of a Nightjar hunting worms and beetles.

The Long and Short of It Thorpeness may look short on the scorecard at 6,421 yards but

the course plays far longer than it appears. With just two par-fives and four challenging short holes you must make your score on the par-four holes, drive the ball straight and long, and hit accurate approach shots to avoid the cannily placed greenside bunkers, swales and hollows. The 429-yard 18th hole is one of the best finishing holes in British golf and has become iconic for the quirky spectator watching over its green.

Pioneering flexible golf memberships Thorpeness was a pioneer of flexible golf membership. It launched its points based Jubilee membership in 2000, enabling golfers to enjoy all the benefits of full membership (handicap, club competitions and weekend play) from as little as £300 a year. Jubilee members also enjoy the unique benefit of being able to share their units with family members and friends and can roll-over unused units into the new season. In 2014, Thorpeness is launching its first-ever Festival of Golf with four days of competitions, coaching clinics with Colin Montgomerie’s long time coach Bill Ferguson, gala dinners and evening entertainment from July 28-31. Entries are now being accepted.

Suffolk’s famous ‘House in the Clouds,’ is a converted water tower which resembles a country cottage, and appears floating on the horizon above the trees. The club recently finished a threeyear programme of renovations to the course adding new greenside swales, hollows and run-offs and remodelling bunkering.

Festival of Golf Package £449pp for guests/visitors (includes dinner bed and breakfast, coaching clinics with Bill Ferguson and Frank Hill, gala dinner at Thorpeness Country Club and all golf. Package excludes drinks)

The par four 12th hole has also been lengthened beyond 400 yards and a knee trembler of a tee added to intimidate the golfer. The dogleg 9th hole was lengthened in 2013 and a new green built to turn it from a long par-four into a true risk and reward par-five. The changes were made with Braid’s original design philosophy in mind, allowing the lie of the land and nature’s quirks to determine the shape of the hole while steeling the course defences against the challenges posed by modern technology and bigger hitting golfers.

T

he James Braid designed golf course was opened in 1933 and welcomes green fees from visitors everyday with no reserved tee times, except for on a Saturday when member competitions take priority. The par 70, sss 71 course offers a good test of golf to all abilities and is well draining, resulting in players never having to play from winter tees or putt on winter greens. The course’s signature hole, a short 152 yard par3 over water is a truly memorable golf hole and the two starting holes are widely regarded as the most difficult in Norfolk; both measuring over 400 yards from the white tees with bunkers and tall, mature trees limiting the approach to the green. Aside from the golf course, Ryston Park also features two practice areas inclusive of chipping and putting greens one with a bunker, enabling players to touch up on their short game prior to a round or contemplate what went wrong on the tough Ryston Park greens! The clubhouse at Ryston Park comprises a comfortable lounge and dining area as well as a relaxing bar where players can relax following a round on the championship golf course. The club’s resident caterers have operated from Ryston Park for several years and have a reputation for preparing tasty meals and bar snacks, as well as catering for visiting golfing parties; taking all dietary requirements into consideration.

Ryston Park Golf Club do have a semi-retired PGA professional as one of their members who does offer limited lessons for members. However, a PGA professional located at a nearby driving range, less than a mile from the club, does offer tuition at competitive rates. Societies are welcome at Ryston Park throughout the year with seasonal packages available. The current winter golf packages include 18 holes of championship golf followed by a one course meal for just £21; and golf followed by a two course meal from the set menu at just £23 per person through to the end of March. Bacon rolls and coffee can be added before play for a small extra charge. WEST BYFLEET

GOLF CLUB

An 18 hole, par 70 (6197 yard), private, parkland golf course established in early 20th century, West Byfleet Golf Club, Surrey is certainly one of

the finest in the region, a true hidden gem that course players swear by.

SOUTH OF ENGLAND SOCIETY GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR 2016

O

ne of the most historic golf courses located in Surrey, south east England, the West Byfleet Golf Club is believed by many golf enthusiasts to be one of the most underrated in its region, if not the country.

Formed in 1922 and built on quick-drying sandy subsoil set against a background of woodland and gorse, the course was originally laid down in 1906 when the land was owned by Hugh Locke-King. It was designed by Cuthbert Butchart, a much -respected professional of his time whose projects included Worplesdon, West Hill, and Royal County Down, in Ireland. Although the odd hole has been lost and others changed, the majority of the course, which is mostly level with just the odd gradient to add some variation, remains faithful to the original design. “Situated on Bagshot sand means that the club has a well-deserved reputation as a fastwww.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

draining course and now with the introduction of fairway watering it ranks among the best courses for full-year round playability,” says Clint Whittaker, general manager and company secretary at West Byfleet. “Our gentle undulating fairways mixed with a challenging course makes us suited for all golfing types. We are proud of our traditional values and the friendly, sociable nature of our members. We offer several roll-up events throughout the week and the weekends in addition to a full list of competition events.” A private members golf club in the heart of the Surrey golf belt, West Byfleet Golf Club has enjoyed a long and successful history. “We take pride in having a friendly atmosphere, excellent facilities, and a course of the highest quality. Our function suite caters for 140 and boasts a dance floor and raised stage for various entertainment events,” Clint states.

“The course, meanwhile, is a challenging one with good risk and reward opportunities that any visitor would remember when playing at West Byfleet Golf Club. This is a top quality course which will provide great risk and reward opportunities. We can assure that our 6 par 4 holes over 400yards will also provide a true test of skills.” Among Clint and his team aims is to provide great, value-for-money experience to all club users including “each member, guest, and visitor every day of the year.” “We offer society groups access Monday through Friday and due to our free draining aspect we believe we are playable 12 months of the year. This includes trolley and buggy access.

“We also offer ‘Golf Society Packages’, which allow groups to select pre-determined options. This also allows groups to pick their own bespoke packages to suit their society needs. In addition, we’ve launched a new upgraded website and as part of this facility we will be able to communicate more with our society organisers.” The West Byfleet Golf Club has now won Prestige Golf magazine’s South of England Society Golf Club of The Year 2016 award in recognition of its outstanding contribution to golf and the region at large.

fine golf clubs in Surrey. We are proud to be given the opportunity to showcase our excellent facilities to a wider audience. “This honour highlights that West Byfleet Golf Club is on the right track in regards to its vision and our understanding of what is required to maintain a high level of standards in a competitive environment.

According to the judges, the club’s warm welcoming atmosphere towards visiting societies and its determination to go the extra mile to accommodate them made it the area’s number one choice. Other reasons for the club winning hands down were its ‘great location, competitive pricing, and a course that is challenging for golfers of all abilities’. Commenting on the win, Clint says: “It’s an absolutely fantastic feeling. The entire team from office staff to Greenkeepers, and from Pro-shop to catering have all worked hard in ensuring our standards and service provided to members and visitors alike is constantly improving. “I am honoured that such a magazine would bestow this award on us given the number of

Our par 72 championship golf course caters for golfers of all abilities whilst inside our 18th century clubhouse; you will find exceptional service and unrivalled hospitality. A mere 15 minutes from Leeds City Centre within the famous golfing belt of north Leeds, Cookridge Hall has everything you could ever wish for in a golf facility. 18 Hole Championship Golf Course - 22 Bay Floodlit Driving Range - Fully Licensed Bar, Restaurant & Function Room. American in design, Golf Course Architect Karl Litten and his team, also responsible for building the Emirates Club in Dubai, incorporated many of the natural features of this north Leeds countryside when creating Cookridge Hall. Since then continued reinvestment and design work has been key to the progression of the golf course recognised by all our members and visitors. The front nine holes are littered with daunting water hazards and strategic bunkering, culminating in one of many memorable holes the short par 3, 6th. Although only 150 yards off the white tees, golfers have to carry the ball all the way to a Mackenzie green to avoid the fateful splash and being caught out by the huge lake. Good golf will be rewarded but beware any loose shots or inaccurate putting will be punished especially on the fast running and undulating greens.

The back nine could be classed as more forgiving with two par 5’s and two impressive par 3’s, after negotiating those successfully golfers are faced with a do or die decision on the 18th. Aptly named Temptation, the green can be found in one shot from the tee however standing guard to swallow any errant tee shot is the lake adjacent to the green. A conservative iron shot down the middle of the fairway leaves an awkward and often costly pitch across the lake to an undulating fast green; a par 4 is no guarantee. t the heart of the beautiful Wharfe Valley with the famous Moor as a backdrop, Ilkley Golf Club is a remarkable golfing experience, set amongst mature trees and a winding river. Founded in 1890 Ilkley is the oldest club in the West Riding, and the third oldest in Yorkshire. The18 hole parkland course is tribute to the combined architectural skills of Dr Alistair Mackenzie and Harry S Colt and is steeped in history. The Ilkley Golf Club Centenary Handbook states that Mackenzie was involved in providing advice to the club on dramatic course changes following a meeting on October the 3rd 1908. Today the course is packed with character. Enjoying a splendid natural setting; bordered by the River Wharfe, Ilkley is a fascinating par 69 joy of a golf course, providing a testing but enjoyable day for golfers of all abilities. Perhaps the most memorable holes, are those along the river - the fourth is the first of two par fives and needs a drive over water - but from the eighth onwards, it is the narrow tree lined nature of the course that provides the biggest challenge.

The Clubhouse at Ilkley Golf Club Testimony to Ilkley’s challenging nature comes from honorary life member and Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, whose course record 64 was set in the year 2000. He spent much of his childhood playing on Ilkley’s perfectly manicured fairways, and has said:

Although I have played golf on the finest courses in the world, Ilkley Golf Club will always have a special place in my heart. The course combines a challenging test of golf with breath-taking scenery and it is always a pleasure to play there. Ilkley offers golf at its finest in truly beautiful surroundings. With this in mind it will come as no surprise, Ilkley is one of the most popular golf clubs for visiting societies in Yorkshire. As soon as you arrive, you will be made to feel extremely welcome by professional John Hammond and his team of friendly and welcoming staff. Ilkley Golf Club is a fantastic golfing experience and a great society venue with excellent facilities on and off the course. It is also fair to say, that on a nice summer evening the terrace overlooking the 18th fairway, is one of the finest places in Yorkshire to share drinks with friends. For any golfer Ilkley really is a must.

A crisp strike with a wedge is required to clear the tree and stop the ball on the putting surface. 5th - 427 yards - par 4 - S.I 1 One of the toughest holes that you are ever likely to play. The river Dee dissects the hole at driving distance, which only the longest of hitters will have the length to carry. irral Ladies Golf Club, set on the highest ground of the Wirral Peninsular, is a club swathed in history as well as having an extremely strong presence in today’s golfing market. With a fairly short course of just under 5,000 yards for ladies and just under 5,200 yards for men it keeps to its heritage by hosting many facilities that are designed for the lady golfer.

Men’s Seniors Open Tues 22nd September 4BBB Stableford £35 per pair Bonfire Fun Open Wed 4th Nov 12 hole ladies and men, team of 3 Stableford £18 per team

Even though the name suggests that this is a club exclusively for women it welcomes men, women and juniors. The origin is as a ladies club but, over the years, Wirral has gained a reputation for welcoming societies as well as hosting competitions for both sexes. The course is designed in a compact way, meaning you can complete a full round of golf in around three hours. Narrow fairways mean that you need to be accurate and with a par 68 for men and a par 70 for women, it can prove to be a challenge. A beautiful challenge set in beautiful undulating countryside and Silver Birch woodland that also has the added bonus of being playable all year round. By being set on high land this club as the added bonus of excellent drainage meaning that play shouldn’t be interrupted at any point during the year. Whether you’re a first time golfer or someone with more experience Wirral Ladies Golf Club will welcome you with open arms, The challenge of the course can seem very daunting at first however, especially as a first timer, at this golf club you can have lessons from the on-site professional, Angus Law, who is a qualified PGA professional. He offers lessons alongside running the well-stocked Pro Shop. Big name brands such as Taylor Made, Cleveland and Ping are sold in the Pro Shop. These services don’t dismiss the juniors in the club either; on offer are lessons that follow the Junior Golf Passport Scheme. This scheme starts at just £5 per child and enables the younger generations to appreciate golf. Wirral Ladies Golf Club does stick to its heritage on some respects. Ladies Captain Days are a key point on the calendar for many female captains. Wirral hosts game days where female captains from across the country come to play their beautiful course; this allows the club to dip back into its history by supporting female golfers today. This beautiful club is certainly one to visit in the area, not just if you’re a lady golfer either!

GOLF AT DEER PARK Premier Golf and Country Club in Central Scotland

D

eer Park has attracted some major tournaments over the years. The 1990, the Scottish Under 25 Professional Championship was won by future Open Champion, Paul Lawrie. Paul is a great fan of the course (see our Golf Video) and has been a frequent visitor over the years. Deer Park was also a regional qualifying site for the Open Championship.

THE DEER PARK MASTERS

In 2012, Deer Park had a unique honour bestowed upon it by the Scottish PGA. It was the only course in Scotland to host two Order of Merit Tournaments, as theYoung Professionals Championship was held in May, followed by the Deer Park Masters in August.

DEER PARK MIXED CLASSIC

The course, itself, is one of two very distinctive nines. The front nine is relatively flat with a series of burns creating an interesting test. The back nine is totally different in character. Here, the course rises and falls with the undulating terrain. On the highest points, Edinburgh Castle is visible on a clear day.

Competitors enjoy a full Scottish breakfast and finish the day with a prize giving diner. However, for many, the highlight of the day is undoubtedly the refreshing glass of Pimms between the last two rounds. The Deer Park Mixed Classic is very much a social event and a must for every golfer’s diary. The Entry Fee is great value at £50 per two person team and includes the 27 holes of golf and all meals.

Since 2004, Deer Park has been the host for The Deer Park Masters, a Scottish PGA Tartan Tour Order of Merit event. The Masters is now one of the most popular events on the tour, loved by the professionals and amateurs, alike. The 2014 Masters is scheduled for August 5th and 6th.

In 2010, the inaugural Deer Park Mixed Classic was held. This is a triple 9 hole mixed event with a unique and interesting format. Nine holes are played as a Texas Scramble, the next nine holes is a Greensomes format and The course measures 6,727 yards the final nine is Foursomes from the championship tees, but play. For 2013, the two person five sets of tees means that the team can comprise either two course can be set up to suit any men, two ladies or a man and level of golfer. a lady.

The course provides a fine test for golfers of all abilities. he moment you arrive at Kingsbarns, you know you’re somewhere special. The relaxed clubhouse, broad smile from each member of staff and hearty handshake of the first tee starter – all combine to ensure that your trip to play golf in Scotland includes what has been called the warmest welcome in

Kingsbarns Golf Links is proud to be part of the heritage of links golf in St Andrews. Located 7 miles south east of the ’home of golf’, the game has been played on the site since 1793. Kyle Phillips designed this Top 100 Ranked golf course and by setting it in an amphitheatre along the coast, nearly every hole boasts spectacular views of the North Sea. Each Autumn Kingsbarns joins the Old Course, St Andrews and Carnoustie Golf Links as a co-host of the European Tour’s prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Caddie Programme Caddies are tradtionally an integral part of the Scottish links golf experience. Kingsbarns caddies in particular are recognised as the best in Scotland. They do much more than carry your golf bag, provide distances, adjust for wind, read putts and perhaps tell a story or two: they simply make your golf round more enjoyable. Caddies are not required but we highly recommend you use one especially for your first visit to Kingsbarns. The Kingsbarns Caddie Guarantee: We’re so confident our caddies will add to the enjoyment of your golf round we’ll guarantee it. If a caddie fails to enhance your experience for any reason, we’ll pay the caddie fee for you (or reimburse you if you paid the fee) immediately at the end of your round. Period, no fine print. Since Kingsbarns caddies are independent contractors (not employees) please request a caddie with your reservation to avoid disappointment on the day of play. No deposit is required with the caddie request and payment for caddie services is made directly to the caddie at the end of the round in cash.

“The caddies at Kingsbarns are the best I have ever had anywhere in Scotland. I’ve played all the major courses throughout all of Scotland, north, south, east and west and they are hands down the best. They were a treat to be around, gave great advice, knowledgeable about the game and had a very calming influence”

Kevin Cox, Florida, USA, 30th July 2012

“Please convey to Sean that the caddies were exceptional and they definitely added to the enjoyment of the experience”

Practice Range The practice range at Kingsbarns compliments and enhances the golfers’ visit to the course. Practice off the grass tees enables golfers to better prepare for the links experience. Situated just a short walk from the 1st tee it allows golfers to practice their short and long game and bunker shots prior to teeing up on the course itself. Complimentary balls are at hand for those playing that day and a member of staff is at hand to attend golfers needs.

must for any golfer visiting the capital.

Turnhouse Golf Club is located on the west side of Edinburgh, close to Edinburgh International Airport. The course is a loop of 2 nine holes of which the 1st and 10th tee both are at the clubhouse making a 2 tee start available. There are some spectacular views from the golf course, looking over to Fife and down to east Lothian, the fairways are undulating and in certain conditions, the course plays like a links course. The Course came into being in 1897, initially only extending to nine holes, when members of Lothian golf club (established 1893) became dissatisfied of sharing Musselburgh Links with other non-course owning Clubs. Recognising the value for ease of access of a recently built Railway, they leased land from the tenant of Turnhouse farm. The venture was so successful in attracting more members that in 1898, the land now occupied by the car park and Clubhouse was bought, and what later became the greenkeepers’ buildings were used as a temporary clubhouse. The Club continued to be known as Lothian Golf Club until April 27th 1909 when it was incorporated and renamed Turnhouse Golf Club Ltd. Turnhouse Golf is possibly one of the best practice areas

Royal Musselburgh Golf Club 5th Oldest in the world and home to the Old Club Cup

Club History

The history of the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club dates to 1774 at least, as their Old Club Cup has winners listed back to that year. The cup was presented to the club by Mr. Thomas McMillan of Shorthope who won it in 1774 and became Captain of the club. There is however a statement in the 1845 Statistical Account of Scotland by the Rev Leslie Moodie, Minister of the Parish of Inveresk, to the effect that a local golf club was formed in 1760, consisting of the principal gentlemen of the town and vicinity. This is reportedly based on notes from the Rev Moodie’s predecessor, the Rev Alexander Carlyle, who was Minister at Inveresk from 1748 until his death in 1805. The Reverend ‘Jupiter’ Carlyle was moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a notable figure in Scottish history. He was a controversial character invoking censure for his behavior on occasions. He was also a renowned golfer and second winner of the Old Club Cup in 1775. In 1758, he also performed the world’s first recorded golf trick shot in London with a club now apparently in the possession the Royal Blackheath Golf Club. He resigned from the Musselburgh club in 1786. The Old Club Cup -the oldest trophy still competitively played for in the world.

Musselburgh

For their first 150 years, the (Royal) Musselburgh club played over the Old Course at Musselburgh and saw it grow to nine holes by 1870. They shared it with other old and prestigious clubs, most notably, for the last years of the 19th Century, the (Royal) Burgess, The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society. Musselburgh golf club appears a relaxed and modern club who did not take themselves too seriously. They met in various hostelries round Musselburgh and elsewhere. After years of meeting in various places round Musselburgh, the club built a clubhouse in Links Place, (now 9 Balcarres Road), which was formally opened on 16th October 1873 with a dinner of forty-four people. The Honorable Company from Edinburgh Golfers built their clubhouse next door at No 10 Links Place. When the later decamped in 1891 to Muirfield, the Musselburgh club moved into the Honourable’s old clubhouse. Another claim to fame that the Royal Musselburgh has is having the worlds original hole cutter. In 1829, which has become the standard hole in golf. In 1830 they played possibly the first two recorded six-a-side club matches. www.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

These were against the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, who were on the point of moving to Musselburgh Links themselves. Bruntsfield won the match on October 15th by three holes, but Musselburgh won the replay in November by one hole. On 1st February 1834, the Bruntsfield club minutes record that the match between the two clubs had grown to a ten-a-side match, which the Musselburgh lost by five holes, costing them ‘one dozen of wine’.

Royal Patronage

On 19th December 1876, HRH Duke of Connaught, Hon President of the Musselburgh club granted permission for it to use the term Royal. He remained patron of the club until his death in 1942, probably the longest royal association with any golf club. His son HRH Prince Arthur was Hon Vice President from 1912 until his death in 1938. Another esteemed Honorary Member was His Imperial Highness, The Grand Duke Michael of Russia who was a committed golfer and attended the ceremony in 1887 where the Connaught Cup was presented to the club.

Prestongrange

In 1925, after 150 years of crowded play at Musselburgh Old Course, the Royal Musselburgh moved down the road to Prestongrange House at Prestonpans, which they took on a 25-year lease from the Grant Suttie family. The course was first designed by James Braid.

LEVEN LINKS

Society Golf Club of the Year for The Fife Area 2015 With its wonderful approaches, large true running greens and one of the finest finishing holes in golf that will live long in the memory of anyone who plays it, Leven Links Golf Course in Fife, Scotland is where champions and champions-to-be join hands for a great game of golf.

W

hilst golf has been played at Leven since 1820, the game dates back to 1846 on parts of these links with the current configuration coming into being in 1909. Leven Links is steeped in history not least because it is the archetypal links course. With its fine bents and fescues, its humps, bumps, hollows and ‘wispy’ rough it could be well used as the very definition of a true links. As such it is to be savoured by all who play here. For its extraordinary achievement of bringing talents together and festering social relationships, Prestige Golf magazine awards Leven Links winner of Society Golf Club of the Year for the Fife area 2015. The magazine spoke to the Links Secretary and Treasurer Jen Low about what winning the award means to the links. Congratulations! Leven Links has been conferred the Society Golf Club of the Year for the Fife area 2015 - Could you talk us through what you feel on being conferred this award? Leven Links are honoured to be conferred as we are in the early stages of implementing the development of the Visitor’s Journey to attract and welcome visitors. Our visitor journey is to demonstrate that in addition to first class facilities, consideration has also been given to the total experience the visitor receives.

Why do you think the club has won this award?

www.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

- Leven Links is a good example of a Traditional Championship Links course and in recent years has become a hidden gem behind some of our more prominent neighbours. By raising our profile golfers are realising that Leven Links is true Scottish Links golf and a real value for money golf experience.

How will winning this award affect your club? - An award from a body such as yourselves is a sign that we are progressing our 5 year target to increase revenue year on year which can only be achieved by providing a good product. Being able to promote this award on our website shows potential visitors Leven Links is an excellent choice.

What in your opinion are the outstanding features of the links that sets it apart and raises it to a level where it wins such a prestigious award? - Leven Links is Scottish links golf at its very best; several partially blind shots provoking the imagination, numerous hazards and rolling fairways with unexpected bumps. - The sea is visible from the course, something which any true links course should encompass. And has always been renowned as a Golfers course, we enjoy the game and also enjoy good hospitality and banter in the clubhouses after our game discussing our experiences good and bad. - Both Links clubs Leven Thistle and Leven Golfing Society have active competitions for all levels of Golf and both compete at a high level in team matches. Where Time Stands Still What do you think your customers most value about the club? - Leven Links is renowned for being an excellent All Year Round golfing experience. Being adjacent to the sea we have a mild dry climate which means the Greenkeeping staff are able to present us with a fine Links course with fast running fairways and excellent slick playing surfaces in the summer but also allowing us quality winter golf playing a full course with Winter greens only required on a few occasions. - After a round on the Links both clubs offer a friendly atmosphere for a drink and also offer excellent food at competitive prices. What is the club’s proudest moments over the years? Is/Are there special memories you’d like to share with our readers? The clubs are working closely together to improve the Links but have their unique identities and proud histories with Leven Links which is widely regarded as one of the best and purest links courses in Scotland, boasting input from Old Tom Morris himself.

The course has hosted local final qualifying when the Open Championship is held at St Andrews. This bears testimony to the quality of the course. The signature hole is the 18th which is real test for golfers of all standards. It measures 456 yards with second or third shot being a carry over the Scoonie burn. In a Bunkered magazine poll, it was recently voted the 2nd hardest finishing hole in Scotland behind the 18th at Carnoustie. Leven also has the distinction of being the 1st course to be made up of 18 tees and 18 greens (St Andrews , Musselburgh and the other older courses at the time were made up of 18 tees but had double greens )

What does the future hold for the club? The course has been strengthened by the addition of strategic bunkers, new tees, realignment of some holes to embrace the natural contours of the fairways in recent years. Currently Leven Links is working a five-year plan to increase revenues to allow reinvestment to improve the quality of the grasses on our fairways and greens. Meaning our members and visitors alike can enjoy a competitive golf experience in the knowledge their fees are contributing to improving the fabric of the Links to enjoy on their return in the future.

A MODERN DAY CLASSIC

ocated at the very heart of Ayrshire’s golf coast near Open venues Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry, Dundonald Links has played host to a number of professional and amateur tournaments with the course listed in the Top 100 Courses in the UK.

Opened in 2003 and designed by highly-acclaimed, golf course architect, Kyle Phillips, who is also renowned for Kingsbarns and The Grove, UK, and Yas Links in Dubai, the course has been inspired by the timeless architecture of the great Ayrshire links courses of Royal Troon, Prestwick and Western Gailes, all connected by the historic rail line. Though just over a decade old, it has the feel of a course 100 years older, which fitted in with its creator’s line of thoughts. Kyle had intimated from the outset that it was his intention “to create a championship Ayrshire links that felt and played as though it was an old, rediscovered course.” His efforts seemed to have paid off substantially resulting in a course that is a thoroughly natural test of golf, one that is comparable to nearby Royal Troon and Turnberry, but with a character all of its own.

Owned by Loch Lomond Golf Club, Dundonald Links indeed offers a challenging alternative links venue to its parkland course and is open for visitor play all year round. “The fairways are generous and, regardless of one’s handicap, the course is a welcome challenge for players of all ability,” says Guy Redford, director of golf at the club. “Kyle used his vivid imagination and the light, sandy soil to build a traditional 7,100-yard masterpiece that lingers in the memory long after a visit is over.” The coastal setting and pristine condition makes it ideal for summer and winter golf. “A warm welcome awaits in the Clubhouse, where you will always be met with a smile,” says Guy. “The standards of service here are high but the atmosphere relaxed.” The course also boasts a 300-metre long practice range providing space for 35 golfers and for those that book a caddie, they will do more than carry the customer’s bag for 18 holes; they know the course well and are known to offer sound advice alongside some friendly banter.

In its short history, the course has already established a reputation as one of Scotland’s finest, having played host to Stage 1 qualifying tournaments for the European Tour and pre-qualifying for the Senior Open Championship. “This year, we will welcome the world’s elite when we play proud host to the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open in July,” says Guy.

Club History

Buckpool Golf Club was founded in 1933. The course was created on land from three adjoining farms, initiated by the Town Council as part of a National scheme to relieve severe unemployment caused by the depression in the Herring Fishing industry. The course was designed by John Henry Taylor.

J H Taylor was one of the fabled ‘Great Triumvirate’ of world golf at the time along with Harry Vardon and James Braid. J H won the British Open five times between 1894 and 1913. His accuracy was legendary. At Sandwich, where he won his first Open by five strokes, he would have the directional posts removed from the blind holes out of fear that his drives would hit them and deflect into bunkers! The order of some Buckpool’s holes has changed over the years along with some cosmetic alterations but the course has retained the integrity of J H Taylor’s original design.During the early sixties the Town Council, which had maintained both Buckpool and Buckie’s other course, Strathlene, decided to close Buckpool for economic reasons. Thankfully a group of enthusiasts had the foresight to form a private Club and leased the course from the council. The members bought the course outright in 1999 and the club has since gone from strength to strength, rightly earning its reputation as one of the real ‘hidden gems’ on the Scottish golfing map.

his creation of mother nature, among the dunes and across the links is a classic example of Scottish seaside golf at it’s best - and the toughest! Peterhead Golf Club was established in 1841. The ‘Old Course’ layout began as a 9 hole course in 1892, designed by Willie Park Jnr a dual winner of the Open Championship. The ‘Old Course’ was extended to 18 holes in 1908 and a second 18 hole course ‘The New Course’ was established in 1923, however today it exists as a 9 hole course. Visitors to Craigewan Links can expect a warm welcome from both the clubhouse staff and members alike. The modern clubhouse provides all the facilities you would expect, with various catering options available on request. Be assured that on arrival at the Craigewan Links you will be made extremely welcome, and following your round, Ailsa and her staff will, if necessary, provide the ever welcome sympathetic ear. The Craigewan Lounge provides a comfortable surrounding to relax and unwind after an arduous but hopefully rewarding round on the links. The outlook from the lounge provides a panoramic view of the links, and out across the North Sea. Relax over the golfers traditional, nae obligatory, medicinal libation, and reflect on how much better it could have been, whilst you watch another tortured soul trying to negotiate the par 5 eighteenth hole.

Some of the famous golfers that have graced this beautiful course over the years include Henry Cotton ion 1944, Fred Daley in 1947 and Max Faulkner in 1962. The great Sandy Lyle played his first Pro Am here in 1978 while Pal Lawrie won our 150 year sesquicentenary Pro Am. HISTORIC, Picturesque AND INSPIRING...

R

esiding in an inspirational setting within 250-acres of the historic Hever Castle Estate and bordering the counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex, Hever Castle Golf Club is a 27 hole golf complex with three loops of 9 holes, the Kings, Queens and Princes. Truly, a course set for the champions. The childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and the mother of Elizabeth I, Hever Castle dates back to 1270. In 1903, a wealthy American, William Waldorf Astor, acquired the Castle and gradually added to the estate. In the 1920s, the Astors created a 9 hole golf course for their personal enjoyment, set around the Hever Castle lake and land to the north

of Hever Castle, which survived until the Second World War when it was abandoned. However, it was in 1992, that the present day Championship Course – the 18 hole Kings and Queens Golf Course – was created by Dr Nicholson, whose employment of the land’s natural beauty and contours gives each hole its distinctive character. In 1998, the Princes 9 hole course, designed by Hever Castle’s Course Manager David Wood opened, and in 2007, the addition of extensive Practice Facilities took place. In 2011, The Astor Lounge Bar & Restaurant was commissioned in honour of the past founder of golf at Hever. “There are a number of aspects which set Hever Castle GC apart, including the wonderful unspoilt countryside setting, the mature Estate the course is set in, and being linked to one of England’s most well-know historic attractions – our clubhouse historically was Hever Castle’s dairy and farm,” says Hever Castle Golf Club Manager Jon Wittenberg. “Having 27 holes, large practice facilities, a golf school with four professionals, and luxurious unique accommodation at Hever Castle allows us to appeal to a diverse audience.” Jon has been with the club for nine years out of his 21 spent in the industry. He is proud to ‘help deliver a club that inspires, fits with modern life, and is a great advertisement for the game of golf’. Golf and hospitality have always been an integral part of the Estate’s history and today’s club preserves the traditions and aims to deliver memorable experiences to all who visit, Jon states. “The club strives to preserve a golfing experience with historic natural beauty, while delivering an innovative, modern approach to club services,” he says. Emphasising about the warm welcome that awaits every golfer to Hever, Jon says: “Our professional team will be able to provide all the help and

attention to detail required for a successful and memorable day’s golf at the club.” Hever plays host to social and competitive golf, which is played every week of the year, and its extensive golf facilities mean member and visitor golf can be played in harmony over the three course layouts. “We pride ourselves in offering outstanding membership benefits to the club golfer, which include Championship memberships with all inclusive access, Princes for the 9 hole golfer, and Flexi, a creditbased membership ideal for the less frequent player.” In addition, members are afforded exclusive times reserved seven days a week and visitors can reserve start times in advance on the phone or online. The suite also benefits from an integral projector system, 11-foot screen, blue-ray player, ipod dock and fully integrated connectivity for presentations. “There is no better way to sample the hospitality at the club than through a Sunday Lunch served in the Astor Restaurant, where our experienced chefs serve classical English dishes, with a modern twist,” Jon says. “Indeed, our unique setting, quality facilities, and outstanding reputation for our hospitality make us a perfect venue for a whole host of different types of golf event. Whether it’s a high-profile televised event or a small gathering of friends, we take great pride in helping to deliver a day that exceeds your expectations.”

THE THREE COURSES Championship Course The Kings and Queens nines has been showcased on Sky Sports and has played host to many prestigious events. At a glance of the scorecard one of the longest holes in Britain, the 644 yard Par 5 17th hole, certainly stands out. However the course boasts an array of stunning holes across its 7002 yard, par 72 layout. Princes Course The Championship Course is complimented by the 2784 yard Par 35 Princes 9 hole Course, which has a wonderful layout and built to the highest specification. Although shorter in length from the Championship Course it provides a good test of golf, where accuracy is important, especially on the par 3 3rd and 6th, both played over picturesque lakes. Hybrid Course The Hybrid course blends the Princes and Kings nines to create a very enjoyable 18 holes at 6076 yards, par 71. This course has a wonderful variety of hazards from tight tree lined fairways to beautifully presented water hazards, strategically placed bunkers and small greens.

THE CLUB Hockley Golf Club is a private members’ Club established in 1914 with a deserved reputation for providing some of the best year-round playing conditions in the South of England.

THE COURSE Hockley is a James Braid designed golf course set on 240 acres of historic chalk downland overlooking the City of Winchester and within easy reach of the M3 junction 11. Interestingly, although the first impression is of a hilly course, it is in fact the least hilly of all the local courses. The course starts with a gentle climb up the first four holes, then is flat for most of the rest of the round, losing all of the height that has been gained down the 18th hole - which is the view that you see from the motorway. The course flows naturally through the landscape and has great views, stretching as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day.

Visitors are made very welcome at Hockley, enjoying both the challenge of our superb course and the friendly service in our clubhouse. Weekdays offer more opportunities for visiting golfers as the course is normally busy at weekends with member’s competitions. Hockley Golf Club welcomes societies and corporate groups throughout the year. We can guarantee your group a great day out. A wide choice of menu, excellent facilities and a top quality chalk downland course ensure everyone has a memorable day. Our clubhouse and pro shop staff are on hand to assist and look after your every need. The course considered enjoyable for both high and low handicap golfers alike and when the breeze is up Hockley provides great challenge.

anterbury Golf Club opened for play in 1927 over 160 acres of land that was leased by the War Office. It is an 18 hole, 6,272 yard course with a par of 71. With the course being of a design belonging to Harry Colt it is easy to see why this is such an excellent golf club; the course itself even includes several SSSI sites (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Over the years, the original heathland nature of the course has been altered by the introduction of a large number of trees. This has resulted in beautiful mature woodland that adapts over each season and gives a different outlook on the course. Very few inland courses are able to match the variety and quality that Canterbury Golf Club offers; with a variety of hazards across the 18 holes it is a great test for every level of golfer.

Canterbury Golf Club opened officially in July 1927 with a match between new members of the club and the Buffs Golfing Society, photos of which can still be seen in the current clubhouse. Over the years this golf club has seen a multitude of changes to the clubhouse. The first of which would have been the fire in October 1938. The clubhouse was razed to the ground after a fire swept through the building, destroying members clubs and kit as it did so. The fire did not destroy the spirit of the club though; competitions were cancelled but the rebuild was underway quickly and the club managed to keep their members and their reputation. At the beginning of 2014, the course was purchased from the MOD by the Club. Since then they have been busy improving the course, refurbishing the bar, installing new showers and attracting fresh membership. Canterbury Golf Club provides a brilliant atmosphere to every player, whether they are members of the club or part of a society, Canterbury will welcome everyone. Lessons are available with great offers and all lessons will take place oncourse, giving you the best learning experience possible. TEHIDY PARK GOLF

CLUB

History of the course

T

he Club lies in the heart of West Cornwall, most notable for its heritage of tin mining, many relics of which can still be seen in the area. Although only two miles from the North Cornwall coast, the course is very definitely parkland in nature, having been

established within the parks of a one-time eminent Cornish family. In 1922, businessmen from the Camborne-Redruth area leased 75 acres of the erstwhile Bassett Estate and enlisted the help of one of the great Cornishmen, the Open Champion Jim Barnes, to advise them on the layout of the first course.

Shortly after World War II, the noted golf course architect C.K.Cotton was utilised to design and build some noteworthy improvements, bringing the course to only a little short of its current length of 6241 yards.. In 1996, the freehold was purchased and in 1998 extensive work was undertaken to provide an improved watering system, which incorporated the building of three lakes, which have a significant presence on the closing holes of the course. Continuous improvement is now a watchword of the Club and the appointment in 2002 of Head Greenkeeper Andrew Eddison should ensure that future improvements are carried out to the highest standards. The lakes are also now the permanent home of a pair of swans who delight the membership annually by producing a brood of cygnets. Moorhen and Mallard may also be seen there regularly.

The Course It is currently a mixture of open holes, some with streams at strategic points, many with tree-lined fairways and 9 holes where out of bounds comes into play. The lakes to which we have previously referred also have a part to play on four holes, especially the 193 yard, Par 3, 17th where a carry from the medal tee of close to 170 yards is required to ensure safety. Societies and organisations will find our attention to detail, flexibility and top value golf packages of particular interest. There is a fully stocked Professional Shop, with something for everyone and you can develop your game with a course of golf lessons from our friendly club professional. Bespoke packages for Societies start from ÂŁ30 for a Bacon Roll and Coffee/Tea, followed by a round of Golf, and a twocourse meal. We hope you enjoy your visit to our Club, including some time spent in our Clubhouse, which has undergone significant improvements including all the usual facilities. s the proud host of The Brabazon Trophy (2008) and The McGregor Trophy (2012) Trevose guarantees a unique golfing experience, 12 months of the year. Along with the likes of Augusta National, Pine Valley, Sunningdale, Royal Portrush and Muirfield Trevose sits in good company alongside the rest of the ‘Colt’ family of courses. As you stand on the intimidating 1st tee, with all 18 holes laid out in front of you the sights and sounds of the Atlantic Ocean will take your breath away. In keeping with most Colt designs the course is set out in two loops of 9 holes. The front 9 holes hug the sand dunes and coastline, offering some spectacular views out to sea. The back 9 holes offer a different, but no less demanding test of golf as you head inland and then back towards the clubhouse. There is only one blind shot and, from the 1st to the 18th the ocean view provides a constant reminder of your proximity to the sea. Like all great links courses the difficulty lies in the wind – so beware when the wind blows! No two days are ever the same, and those who are prepared to be more creative with their shot making will be well rewarded. The greens are often wide and the fairways generous, but trouble awaits any errant shots. The rough can be penal in places, and watch out for the carefully crafted bunkers that are strategically placed throughout the course. Come rain or shine, wind or calm Trevose will test every shot in your armoury and every club in your bag! The Championship Course has four sets of tees offering different levels of difficulty; blue (championship); white (club competitions); yellow (men’s day) and red (ladies day). Please check for allocated tee times if wishing to play a 3 or a 4 ball. Trevose offers three courses, catering for golfers of all standards. •

The “Championship Course” ranks as one of the top links golf courses in the British Isles.

The “Headland Course” is the ideal 9 hole alternative to The Championship Course with a challenging layout and fast greens.

The “Short Course” is ideal for beginners, juniors and those more accomplished golfers looking to refine their short game.

Glynhir Golf Club

G

lynhir Golf Club celebrated its centenary year in 2010, originally starting life at nearby Llandeilo and moving to its present location in 1967. The course is located at the foot of the Black Mountains in an area of outstanding natural beauty where there is an abundance of wild life. Here you will have the opportunity to see otters, badgers, foxes, together with a wide variety of birds, including red kites, herons and buzzards. This in itself makes Glynhir Golf Club a most attractive prospect for an enjoyable game of golf. With few inclines or undulations, Glynhir is revered as an easy walking course, and with no two holes the same makes for an interesting day out. There is a good mix of par fives, fours and threes, where golfers will have plenty of opportunities to test their skills. You reach the first by leaving the car park and crossing a country lane. It is a downhill par four measuring 303 yards. There are small plantations either side of

the fairway and if you get a good drive away here, there’s every possibility of scoring the first birdie of your round. The sixth is a lovely par three. Although it only measures 158 yards, the green is surrounded by banking, making the target look very small indeed. The large pond sitting out right is intimidating but shouldn’t really come into play if the correct club is chosen. A short walk across the car park brings you to the tenth. This is a gentle par four where large trees and hedges lie approximately 60 yards short making the entrance to the slightly raised green narrow. The 12th, regarded by many as our signature hole, is a long par four, invariably played into the wind, so expect to possibly play three shots before reaching the putting surface! The fourteenth and fifteenth are two lovely holes. For the 14th you play a drive to the corner of the dog-leg and from there it’s approximately 100 yards downhill to the green, so club selection is important. The fifteenth is the narrowest

The fifteenth is the narrowest hole on the course. Large trees and hedgerow line both sides, with OOB on the right. The fairway itself is littered with moguls and is quite reminiscent of any hole on a links course. There are two large trees framing the raised putting surface. Accurate hitting here is paramount. The final hole is a long sweeping par four which dog legs slightly to the left. Avoid the trees on both sides of the fairway and be happy to take a bogey to finish your round.

Our experienced Bar and Catering team of Michael and Natalie Jago, have an extensive set of menus to supply and satisfy visiting groups of all sizes. Whilst most visitors prefer to use the conservatory area for drinks after golf and/or pre dinner presentation of prizes etc, we can be flexible to meet any preferences.

Buggies for Hire

For 2015, the Club has invested in a new fleet of quality ride-on buggies. Maintained daily by our Professional staff, these buggies are readily available for visitors’ use at all times (prior booking is advisable). An extensive stock of pull trolleys is also available daily.

PGA Professional Staff

Our PGA Head Professional Bruce Porter, holds a well stocked shop and can cater for every need. In addition, Bruce can assist Society group organisers with Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive material, swing analysis and general tuition as required.

Progress and Investment

Glynhir Golf Club has gone through a number of progressive changes in recent years, notably several new team members being added to the Club’s management structure, and, further investment into the continual development and presentation of the golf course.

As a result, visitor traffic increased by 60% during the latter period of the 2013 season, and in 2014 a further increase in this trend is expected. All visiting groups are welcomed personally by a member of staff on arrival, and given a brief introduction to the Club plus a ‘state of play’ update before commencement of play. We strongly believe in both value for money and customer satisfaction here at Glynhir GC, and we hope to see you soon!

COTTRELL PARK GOLF RESORT

Home of Golf in South Wales it sure is. However, two magnificent championship golf courses, unrivalled practice facilities, friendly and welcoming clubhouse, snooker and pool room, nature trail, conference and meeting rooms, marquee hire for special occasions ensure that there is more than golf at Cottrell Park Golf Resort.

H

ome to two championship-length 18-hole courses, Cottrell Park Golf Resort is a truly majestic setting for golf. Situated in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, located just five minutes drive from junction 33 of the M4 and seven miles west of central Cardiff. Covering over 400 acres, the parkland offers wide views sweeping northwards as far as the Brecon Beacons and southwards over the Bristol Channel to the Mendips. The golfing facilities include two championship golf courses, the Mackintosh and the Button Gwinnett, two high tech golf simulators, (a first of their kind in the UK), 10 bay undercover driving range, two putting greens and an on course golf practice area. Other activities include, snooker and pool room, fishing lake and nature trail for walking, jogging and cycling. “We are a commercial facility with a very strong emphasis on providing an excellent service to our membership, which is the largest in Wales,” says general manager Derek Smith, who has been in the golf industry for near four decades and in his current position at Cottrell Park for the past 11 years. Simply friendliness, efficiency with a total professional outlook on quality of product, and excellent customer care is what Derek prides about the team at Cottrell. “Our mission is to welcome our guests with a smile, be friendly and helpful at all times, and present our services and facilities immaculately,” he says.

According to Derek, part of Cottrell’s attraction is that it is more than a golf course. “Having two championship courses is a great base as we also have other facilities such as a nature walk, fishing lake and a 400-seater marquee.” “Unlike a lot of multi course complexes where the courses are similar ours are truly unique. The Mackintosh, for example, is a traditional parkland course whilst the Button is an open course with lakes as its features. Both are maintained to a high standard, and both members and visitors do not mind which course they play as both are a strong challenge.” Looking at the future, Derek states that expansion, growth, and a desire to continue to remain a major player in Wales will always be on top of Cottrell’s list. “Cottrell Park is on target with its aims of a forward thinking Golf Resort always looking outside the box never taking anything for granted. Our goals move in a moving climate and we have achieved so many goals over the last few years. We must keep focused to ensure we give our members and visitors a superb facility for all to enjoy.”

The clubhouse, which is the closest to the sea in Britain, offers an ideal place to relax after a game with a choice of two bars, a restaurant and dining area, and an upstairs balcony with views of the coastline, mountains and course. “Our club is famous for offering a warm Welsh welcome from both staff and members – this starts at the point of booking ending up on the day of play,” Dennis points out. “We offer competitive prices, society packages, good tee time availability throughout the week and weekends, and ease of booking on line or through office or Pro’s Shop.” Pwllheli’s efforts in running an efficient and popular club has now won it Prestige Golf magazine’s the Society Golf Club of the Year for the North Wales area award. “Offering links to accommodation to help golfers find somewhere suitable to stay, launching an app so golfers can easily access information about the club, and having fantastic facilities all worked in Pwllheli’s favour. It won hands down.” Speaking about Pwllheli’s winning the award, Dennis said: “This is quite an honour particularly as there are numerous courses in North Wales, some much larger and more well-known. To be chosen for the award is an endorsement that we are one of the best in the region.” “It has always been our endeavour to provide competitively-priced golf and good tee time availability for both members and visitors. We believe we have achieved the right balance and will continue to improve the product for both the benefit of the members and visitors,” he added

being sold separately, with the hotel going for private operation.

“The club is known for its warm welcome and ability to play the 18 Greens the year round,” says club secretary Chris Owens, who has been PGC secretary for 2.5 years and member for 20 years. “I would say we offer a good but fair test of championship links golf.”

Today, the clubhouse has extensive members’ and visitors’ facilities including a lounge bar and full catering. The course, meanwhile, features in the Welsh Golfing Union calendar and its national championships are held here at the club.

First established in 1905, the present Championship course was laid out along the foreshore at Barkby Beach when Fred Collins of Llandudno was invited to design an 18 hole course which was completed by November 1906, when the first competition was played and remained in play until 1921. “As well as course development, the club required premises and so a new clubhouse was built in 1907,” states Chris. Subsequently, there followed a lease of a spacious residence ‘Stradbrook House’ which was converted to a residential clubhouse in 1921. “In the period up until 1945, the clubhouse was extended by the building of an annexe with some 50 bedrooms. In 1957 the course and clubhouse were offered for sale. The hotel and course www.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

“Fortunately, the club was able to secure the lease of the course and set about returning it to Championship standard and converting old outbuildings for use as its new clubhouse.”

“Visitors enjoy the challenge of playing a links championship course as well as the excellent social facilities,” says Chris. This year the club will play host to the Welsh Men’s Amateur Golf Championship as well as the Senior Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship. “We provide a good a value opportunity to play championship golf all year through. Our aim for the future is to continue to improve and attract more championship tournaments,” says Chris.

BLOXWICH GOLF CLUB

MIDLANDS SOCIETY GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR 2017 An 18-hole mature parkland course set in 120 acres of calm Staffordshire countryside, yet within 10 minutes drive of both the M6 and M6Toll motorway, Bloxwich Golf Club offers excellent facilities and traditions expected from one of the premier clubs in the area.

S

ituated on the northern edge of the Black Country and founded in 1923, Bloxwich Golf Club is a well-established members’ club where you can enjoy the best of both worlds – the peace and tranquillity of a rural club yet with an easily accessible location. “Leave our first tee and you will be transported into the heart of arable Staffordshire countryside on our undulating semi-parkland course. You will find it hard to believe you are but a few miles from the M6 and adjacent to the A34 when the only noises you hear are songbirds in summer and the occasional tractor,” says club manager and secretary Gavin Whittington. When the club first opened it had nine holes, 149 men, 108 ladies and 20 juniors. The original 96 acres bought for £55 in 1919 was soon expanded by 12 acres to create a full 18 hole course, and ‘The Field House’ was purchased for a clubhouse. Remarking about the club’s unique features, the Walsall Observer of the time said: “From a sporting point of view the short (175yd) 6th hole would take some beating.” It is still a daunting hole today. www.prestigegolfonline.co.uk

Over the years, Bloxwich has built a reputation of offering excellent facilities and traditions that would be expected from one of the premier clubs in the area. Measuring a relatively long 6,296 yards from the championship tees, this mature parkland course’s fairways meander their way through the Staffordshire countryside. With four par 5s and five par 3s there are some holes that you can attack, but be warned, some of the par 4s are treacherous. None more so than the narrow 455-yard finishing hole that requires two big hits to find the green in regulation. “Although not the longest Championship length course in the area, at 6,296 yards off the white tees, 6,096 off the yellow tees, and 5,340 for ladies, our course can certainly rank among the most challenging and rewarding one,” says Gavin. Designed in the main by J Coburn, the club’s undulating semi-parkland course has natural hazards, which allows for an exceptional challenge whether you are a high or a low handicapper. There is a whole range of obstacles to successfully Prestige Golf

overcome to stand any chance of scoring well. “The layout is such that the natural contours of the land have been sculpted into the course to make accuracy all the more important a feature of your game, whilst the bunkers that guard the greens are tricky too,” Gavin adds. The club’s 18-hole course also boasts a practice pitching area, putting green, short chipping and bunker area, and nets to perfect both the long and short game.

121

To ensure the enjoyment of the course for all, we ask all golfers to avoid slow play. To this end, we encourage players to keep up with the group in front, not just in front of the group behind, and to play in maximum groupings of three wherever possible.” The club offers society and Corporate Day Package to all groups with more than 16 players. “Smaller groups are very welcome, but do not qualify for our discounted green fees applicable to the larger society and corporate groups.” The club’s catering is provided by its own staff with Jack Lloyd and Keri Bond providing a range of quality snacks and meals to suit all budgets. From breakfast to evening meal, food is available throughout the day, and our well stocked bar is open between 11am and 11pm (or beyond by request).

Bloxwich is open for play almost all year round, only closing due to exceptional weather conditions. As a result of the efforts from the greenstaff in recent years, the main greens are in play for the majority of the time, and trolleys can be used at all times. “We appreciate this is an important consideration for all our visitors and members alike, and we work hard to maintain these high standards.

“A warm Black Country welcome awaits you from our pro Richard Dance, Bar Manager Danni Rutter, and all of the staff here at Bloxwich Golf Club. We look forward to making your visit a truly memorable one,” says Gavin.
