IAN RUSSELL MY SECRET WEAPON

MY SECRET WEAPON Ian Russell reveals the key to his year round success. Being an actively involved consultant since the very birth of the Avid brand has seen me involved in many exciting product development projects. But I have to say none more so than when Jason and Ant asked a few of us to be involved in creating a new range of terminal under the Outline banner. My job takes me fishing to so many different types of venues, it was interesting to see how we used each set of new samples and how it would affect my catch results. The varied venues included small coloured water syndicates, right through to crystal clear almost tap water like venues at home, to the vast European lakes as well as some very tricky smaller European venues where believe me, they have seen just about every kind of rig situation thrown at them. The initial samples we used did nothing to improve my results but also to be fair, never made them dip either. But as various colour schemes were used and tried, a selection of products were starting to build up and become essential parts of my armoury. The other lads were also starting to build on this too and as we were all fishing some very different venues, we began to get a tad excited about the final products coming to fruition. I remember very clearly bumping into Chris Lowe down at Linear on a very difficult week. The whole complex was fishing hard and the bites were difficult to come by. Chris informed me that over the course of 4 days, only 9 fish had been out, 8 of them to his rods using the Outline End Tackle. In my 4

2019 AVID GUIDE

opinion, something other than pure fishing experience had to be at play. So the range grew and the inferior products and finishes were pushed aside. You see, it isn’t just a case of receiving gear and chucking it out on the rods. This range was used and pulled to pieces by us for a long time before the winning products became part of the new Outline End Tackle range. My trips abroad were the most interesting during the testing phase. Etang De Manoir was indeed a tricky little place to build a tally of carp, but my 2 trips to this stunning little place whilst using the finished range were nothing short of incredible! I was catching from the off and kept on catching on both trips all week long, even taking the much sought after ‘Tiger fish’ twice on my last trip! The attention to detail on the product is second to none as we had even included a different stiffness’s of rubber in the makeup of products like the Tail Rubbers, Anti-Tangle Sleeves and Line Aligners.

Reports were feeding back to me from the other team members testing the gear and the results were simply getting better and better.

IAN RUSSELL MY SECRET WEAPON

I loved showing some of my tutorial clients how good the final samples were by laying two set ups side by side in the margins. There was never a contest really against any of the other terminal tackle they would bring along. The Outline End Tackle virtually disappeared every time, regardless of the bottom. To see the look on their faces was priceless! So eventually, after nearly 2 years the range was completed and we all hastily awaited delivery of the finished, ready for sale items. To say we are all delighted would be a massive understatement. I remember the meeting at Avid HQ, the vibe was electric. I was then also allowed to use the full range in my upcoming appearances on Fishing TV’s popular Carp Wars series 2. These were filmed on such a varied selection of venues, I knew the kit would play a major part in my results and from Fryerning Car Park and Vallee Lakes with their murky waters, to the clear waters of Steeple Lake where the final was eventually filmed, the gear worked an absolute treat and most definitely played a major part in me winning the second series. I often get asked what item of the range would be my favourite product and my answer of course is all of it! But if I had to make a choice, it has to be the Quick Change Lead Clip. The reason being is the venues I fish on are usually quite prolific in the amount of stock they hold and to change a hooklink and get a baited rig back out there as fast as possible requires tackle that suits the job, the Quick Change Lead Clip does just that. The second product I use week in, week out is the 20lb Pindown Hooklink, which I also use as a boom section on my Flick Rig. This very soft, yet heavy abrasion resistant material plays such a major part in my catches, it’s a must have essential as part of my tackle box. Attaching a foam nugget or a Pop Up in PVA mesh to the rig prior to casting holds the rig up from the lake bed. When this melts, it allows the rig to settle in a coil on the lake bed, giving the rig so much movement that, at times, I have to use forceps to get the hooks out! Which is a first in my carp fishing experience.

2019 AVID GUIDE

I often get asked what item of the range would be my favourite product and my answer of course is all of it! Once you start using the Outline End Tackle range, try testing it in the margins for yourself against your old and out dated terminal tackle and see for yourself just how different it looks. Avid have created, in my opinion, the very best range of end tackle ever produced and with more and more products being introduced, the range will continue to go from strength to strength. In my opinion, to go fishing without Outline End Tackle is to put yourself at a disadvantage. Tight Lines, Ian Russell

SIMON CROW ALL CHANGE

ALL CHANGE Simon Crow talks about his new role for Avid. It’s fair to say that my life opened another chapter in the summer of 2018 when, after 24 years of working on the weekly magazine Carp-Talk, everything came to a halt. My fishing had been running like clockwork for years as I dashed between the office and the lake, but sadly the era of magazines is in decline and the final issue of the popular newspaper hit the shelves. I was a little bit lost to begin with as the day I found out was exactly the same day that the public heard the news. Nevertheless, I’d known the day was looming and if anything good was to come from the situation I’d be able to do a lot more fishing! Besides earning a living as a magazine editor I was also employed as an angling consultant. With there being an increasing number of anglers now earning a living from this on a full-time basis everything fell into place nicely when I was offered the chance of joining Avid in what can only be described as the ‘dream job’. I didn’t hesitate to take up the offer as I knew this was a brand that was going places. Not only did they have a great team of lads guiding the ship, they had awesome products and the right business strategy to keep heading in the right direction. To cut a long story short, I joined the team on 1st August 2018 and kicked things off in the perfect way with an absolutely stunning 30-plus leather from Weston Park in Shropshire. I was buzzing about what lay ahead as I’m absolutely addicted to carp fishing and have been for over thirty years of my life. It was going to be a massive change to be out on the bank a bit more, especially as the ‘overnight’ life had taken up so much 12

up to an hour and a half away. This wasn’t just once or twice a week either, I was going through nearly £160 of petrol each week at the height of the season!

of my time in the past, but it didn’t take me long to settle into my new way of life.

With the reduction in dashing about also came a different fishing experience. I’d been so used to targeting fish within a particular time frame, I now had many more options available to me. In the past I joined only two or three waters a year, but I’ve already doubled the amount of UK tickets I have for 2019 and I’ve even applied for a syndicate place on a water in Germany! Let’s hope it all pays off in the end.

Although I’d taken a slight pay reduction from what I’d been earning, the one thing I noticed first was the drop in visits I was now making to the petrol station. Having caught most of the carp on my ‘wanted list’ within an hour’s radius of the Carp-Talk office, I’d been pushing the fuel consumption to the limit as I chased targets on overnighters

On the tactics front I’ve also noticed how things have changed since I started my new role. Whilst fishing overnighters I rarely chased carp with a track record of getting caught during the day when I knew I’d be in the office. This is part of the big fish jigsaw, doing the research and knowing your capabilities. I spend hours

Avid in what can only be described as the 'dream job'.

talking to previous captors of fish I want to target, plotting the date and time they are caught, as well as the swim and area being fished. Scrolling through social media posts for news and information along the same lines is also a part of this strategy. I always want to maximise my chances of getting the ones I want, rather than wishing on a star. Obviously I now have many more options available to me. Overnight angling generally sees me fishing for one bite at a time. I rarely put much bait out when the rods are in the water for a short period, instead doing this in advance of a trip or when I’m about to leave. I cherish the extra hours I now have to sit over bait and wait. The best example I can give here is on a Lincolnshire syndicate water I joined specifically for the back end of 2018. The venue, which lies on the outskirts of Lincoln, has a track record of switching on in the autumn and winter. I’d set my sights on targeting it right the way through until the beginning of 2019. However, I ended up catching what I wanted a lot quicker than I’d anticipated.

I couldn’t put a foot wrong, kicking things off with the biggest common in the lake known as Arnie at 36lb on my first ever trip. I backed this up with another of the A-Team called The Sergeant on the same morning and things just went from there. Next trip down I had another brace of thirties, followed by another brace on my next session, including the biggest fish in the lake called The Trent Mirror. It then all culminated with one of the finest mirrors in that region of the country known as The Woodcarving, which put the finishing touches on a great few trips. Sitting over big beds of bait had played a role, but more importantly having the rods in the water when the biggies were feeding hard had been the key. Most of my bites came at first light, a time when I’d normally have been packing up to go to work. Simon Crow

NEW PRODUCTS STORMSHIELD RANGE

STORMSHIELD The Stormshield range has continued to go from strength to strength and as a result, we have added some brand new products this year. Stormshield came to fruition with the help of our European team, mainly from those that use a boat to transport their gear during sessions. They asked for a small range of products that would help to keep their tackle dry and well protected from the elements. So we began the development of a new fabric that would meet all the criteria. The Stormshield range was born.

LINEAR TIPS With over 30 years of combined fishing years between them, it’s fair to say that Chris Lowe & Angie Lawley are the number 1 authority when it comes to Linear Fisheries. Here are their top tips to success for every day ticket lake on the complex.

CHRIS LOWE & ANGIE LAWLEY LINEAR TIPS

Brasenose 1 Tip 1 For most of the winter and into the spring, Zigs produce a lot of the fish and a good starting point for them is 7ft hooklinks with red or black hookbaits. Angie prefers red and I prefer black, but we both get plenty of bites on both colours.

Tip 2 Use Corn! They just love it on B1 and it is hard to overdo it. Keep it going in steady and often over the course of the session to keep the bites coming. Fish plastic corn hookbaits over it and you’ll soon have all three rods going at once.

Tip 3 The carp used to respond well to big beds of bait but not so much anymore. Baiting with a little and often approach seems to be the way forward.

Hunt’s Corner Tip 1 Don’t ignore the margins as a lot of fish get caught from very close to the bank.

Tip 2 Don’t forget your floater gear for most of the year. Hunt’s is a great surface water, probably the best surface water on the complex and for most of the year which is a great bonus.

Tip 3 Brasenose 2 Tip 1

This water responds well to the wind and fish move on a new wind instantly. Because of the shape of the lake, the fish spend a lot of time at one end or the other.

Brasenose 2 can be a distance water, so having rods and reels that are up to the job is a must. But once fishing, finding the gravel spots is key and fishing on them will see you out fishing the others.

Tip 2 Use particles as your base. There are lots of crays in B2 and particles doesn’t seem to attract them in like some other baits can.

Tip 3 Zigs fished at half to three quarter depth with a sloppy spod mix over the top should keep the bites coming.

2019 AVID GUIDE

19

CHRIS LOWE & ANGIE LAWLEY LINEAR TIPS

Manor Farm Tip 1 Manor can be a tricky water sometimes, but being accurate with your casting will definitely keep the bites coming. Once I’ve found the spots, I’ll clip up my measuring sticks and count the wraps to the spots.

Tip 2 Boilies are a must for Angie and me, not necessarily to get more bites, but they seem to attract bigger fish.

Tip 3 I’ve never fished anywhere that fishes as well using solid PVA bags, either on your spot or just cast to showing fish.

Oxlease Tip 1 Oxlease is a very good Zig water, either fished as single hookbaits or with a sloppy spod mix over the top.

Tip 2 Nine times out of ten, both myself and Angie will start a session on Oxlease using solid PVA bags.

Tip 3 Sonubaits F1 Corn is something we always fish with on here and is almost guaranteed a bite.

20

2019 AVID GUIDE

CHRIS LOWE & ANGIE LAWLEY LINEAR TIPS

St Johns Tip 1 When finding your spots with the marker rod, you’ll notice that most of the fishable areas are pretty big. I have found that fishing on the seams or the edges where the gravel meets the silt or weed is the best. Fishing the middle of the spots will see bites, but the edges will bring more.

Tip 2 I have found that baiting at night seems to slow the bites down, so I try to put plenty of bait in before the dark sets in. I’ll only top up the swim at night if I feel that the fish have cleared the spot and there is no bait left.

Hardwick/Smiths Tip 1 Hardwick/Smiths is like an egg box on the bottom, so my first tip is to use a marker rod. This is essential to find the holes in the weed and the many features to be fished.

Tip 3 It’s more of a particle water than a boilie water, so mixed particles are a good base for my bait. If you want to catch one of the huge catfish from St Johns, simply add some pellets to your mix and prepare for tired arms!

Tip 2 Fish on top of the features as some have quite severe drops. This also means that you will be well out of the weed.

Tip 3 When fishing this lake, I have always used plenty of pellets in my mix, which has produced lots of big hits of fish. A mix of 2mm and 4mm Sonubaits S-Pellets are sure to give you a bite.

AVID ADVENTURES NORMANDY, FRANCE

AVID ADVENTURES Normandy, France The Avid Adventures video series has been up and running now for over six months and is gathering momentum with every new episode. Part 4 saw Avid Media man Anthony Molyneux and Product Developer Jason Umney team up with Bruno Simond in the Normandy region of France for a week of fishing that none of them would forget any time soon! Avid Adventures has just passed the six month mark and was the brainchild of our consultant John Flewin. John joined the team last year and from the off, we knew that he would fit in perfectly. Full of fresh ideas, superb camera skills and a great understanding of the carp market. A meeting at Avid HQ was all we needed to invite John on-board and Avid Adventures was born! The idea behind the series was a simple one. To visit inspirational venues with members of the Avid team to bring a different type of video to your screens, in an effort to inspire you guys to get out there on the bank. Part 1 saw John visit Old Bury Hill with Ian Russell and Jason Donaldson for 48 hours of none stop action. The weather was great and into the low 30’s, which made daytime bites difficult, but when the sun began to set, the bites started to gather momentum. Ian and Jason spent much of the daylight hours fishing from the boats which are available to anyone, where Ian landed an awesome low 20lb mirror! Part 2 landed just as Simon Crow joined the team, so John visited AJ Fisheries Cove lake for a 48 hour session where the two spent their time filming & catching some dark scaly fish in the gin clear water. In part 3, John made the long journey down to Kent to film with James Pierce and Steve Hall in search of some of the huge carp that reside in the tiny local rivers. Things went very well! Steve bagged one of the biggest known fish at over 30lbs from a river no more than 24

two rods lengths wide, which brings us on to part 4. September and the early part of October are always a very busy time at Avid, with our annual trade show falling at that time of the year. So as a celebration, Jason and I figured that it was time to get the rods out, but we wanted something a little different. I had met Bruno at the Montlucon Carp show back in March for the first time after him joining the team and we instantly hit it off. As us anglers do, we got to talking about fishing and Bruno mentioned that he ran his own lake in the Normandy region of France, but that wasn’t what made my ears prick up. We talked at length over the three day show about some of the awesome sounding venues that Bruno had fished around the area that he lived including a stretch of river that had produced carp to well over 40lb. One or two pictures were enough for me to get straight on the phone to Jason and demand that we organise a trip to fish with Bruno later that year. So that’s exactly what we did!

AVID ADVENTURES NORMANDY, FRANCE

Plans went back and forth between the three of us over the next few months, but the draw was always the river. Some of the fish that had been caught from this two mile stretch were too hard to pass up, so our main focus was going to be there. I have fished in France a lot of times in the past and to be honest, a week on the same lake or in the same swim is normally far too long for me, so we arranged to fish three different venues. So with the trade show done and the tunnel booked, it was finally time to put all these plans into action. We left Shropshire at midnight on the Friday and drove through the night to make the 7am crossing into France which would put us in Normandy for late Saturday morning, where we met Bruno at his lake. The river was a short walk away from the lake, so Bruno took us there first. However, we decided that the weather in the middle part of the week would be better for the river, so we headed off for a few supplies from the local supermarket, then made our way to a lake only five minutes drive away. We were met with a mature ten acre lake in stunning surroundings, lined with willows and not another angler in sight. Heaven! Personally, I couldn’t wait to get the cameras out and start filming!

We spent the rest of the day setting up the camp, finding some spots to fish and capturing everything on camera. We had no sooner finished our dinner when my right rod screamed into life with a low 20lb grass carp. By first light, I had managed a low 20lb mirror, but the French machine had been up most of the night with 12 fish to 29lb! Jason had also banked his first ever grass carp which was funny to watch! Little did he know that after the ‘bream like fight’, he would be beaten to hell on the bank! The day seemed to pass very quickly and before we knew it, the sun was on its way under the horizon again. Little did we know that all three of us would be up most of the night, catching and filming the action! Dawn saw us all with a number of fish to just under the 30lb mark

By first light I had managed a low 20lb mirror, but the French machine had been up most of the night with 12 fish to 29lb!

and with tired eyes, we packed away in great anticipation for the river. A quick pit stop at the supermarket for some fresh supplies and a shower at Bruno’s lake was enough to rid of ourselves of thoughts of sleep and get focused in on the next leg of the trip. This was the one we had been waiting for! The first lake was great, but after seeing the river on the first day, our thoughts had been there ever since. But it was now time to do what we came to do and try to land one of the huge carp that live in this river. It was now mid-afternoon, we spent the remaining daylight hours changing the rigs, looking for clear spots in the gin clear weedy water and laying the traps for the first night. I was lucky enough to get myself in the downstream swim which had a nice line of snags in the margin and a rock hard clear area in the middle of the river. Jason was sandwiched between me and Bruno, but we all had plenty of free water to ourselves. The first night passed with no action, which was quite welcome after the previous night on the lake. But at first light my left rod fished close to the snags ripped off with a small but powerful 19lb common. Just as I slipped my fish into the net, Bruno quickly ran to his rods and lifted into a carp. A short but good battle resulted in a small but superbly dark common. We set up the cameras and got some great footage and pictures before quickly returning our captures to where they belong.

AVID ADVENTURES NORMANDY, FRANCE

The remainder of the day passed with no action but moving into the evening, we were optimistic of more. We were visited by Didier and Baptiste, our French salesman and they insisted that we went out for a meal, so off we went for a lovely dinner and a few beers and returned to reset the rods at around 9pm. Before we had gone to bed, I had landed two bream, two chub and a small barbel. Bruno had also banked a small common, so our spirits were high for a sleepless night. But it wasn’t to be. I was awoken the next morning just on first light to Jason with one his rods hooped over and Bruno standing ready with the net in hand. By the time I had got my boots on, the action was over and there was a good sized common in the bottom of Jason’s net. Certainly the biggest so far. At first glance it looked like a good mid to upper 20lb-er. It was only when we lifted the fish out and onto the mat that we realised that it was actually much bigger. Jason popped the size 4 CRV and 18mm Code Red Boilie from its bottom lip and hoisted up the sling. The needle settled on 35lb. An amazing creature and one that any angler would be proud to catch, but this being a river carp meant the world to Jason and for once in his life, he was nearly speechless!

We got some great footage and some even better images before slowly releasing the old beast back to its home. We spent the next hour sat around cooking breakfast and watching the footage before resetting the rods for the final 24 hours. As the previous days, we had no action until first light the following morning, where Bruno landed himself a small common before we broke camp and our thoughts turned towards the final venue, a 40 acre lake with carp to over 50lb.

So with the gear back in the van, we headed to a local tackle shop owned by Juilien, a good friend of Bruno’s to pick up a few bits before making the short ride to the lake. We followed Bruno over the river and turned off the road onto a gravel road lined on one side with tall trees and the river on the other. The trees began to thin and revealed a huge well matured lake. We slowly made our way around the lake to a spot that Bruno suggested, a large point that commanded a lot of water. This meant that we could all fish from the same swim, but target different areas of the huge expanse of water that stood before us. Bruno decided that the boat would help us to find some spots, with the lake being very shallow and silty. He had a novel but simple way of finding those spots. He used his prodding stick to feel the bottom as we slowly trolled around, dragging the prodding stick along the bottom. A quick and easy way to find those harder spots on shallow silty lakes. A couple of hours later, we all had our rods on the spots we had chosen to fish and all in time to watch the sun vanish behind the stunning tree covered hills at the opposite side of the lake.

AVID ADVENTURES NORMANDY, FRANCE

I had barely had the chance to take off my life jacket when the bobbin hit the ground for a second time. So the life jacket was quickly put back on and I was out again, this time on my own. Again, it was difficult to know the size of the fish but with a better understanding of the boat this time, I was in more direct contact with what was happening. I got around 40 yards away from the fish when the fight really started and I soon caught a glimpse of what had picked up my 18mm Code Red and Pineapple Pop Up combo. This time it turned out to be a long and lean hard fighting 28lb mirror. I was more than happy with two fish, even though they weren’t amongst the known A-Team, I was made up that we had caught fish from all three venues!

It was hard to tell at first exactly what size the fish attached was, but as we drew ever closer, it became apparent that it was no pasty! Bruno had told us about this lake before the trip, so we knew that it would be a tall order to catch one from. But worth the gamble with known fish to mid 50’s. The night passed uneventfully, with only Jason having a strange take on his right rod that resulted in him winding the rod back from a long spot with nothing to show. We spent the morning filming some bits about the lake and some of the fish that Bruno has caught in years gone by, when at lunchtime, the bobbin on my right rod had slowly dropped down. So with life jacket on and Bruno on the motor, we headed out in the boat towards the long spot where the rod was placed the day before; in hope of a monster. It was hard to tell at first exactly what size the fish attached was, but as we drew ever closer, it became apparent that it was no pasty! 28

Being the seasoned boat angler that I am, I of course had everything well under control and had no trouble at all holding my own in the middle of this 40 acre lake! If only that was the truth! This was probably the second or third time that I had played a fish from the boat and if it wasn’t for the real professional boat man Bruno, I’m sure I would have been out there for far longer on my own! With the fish securely in the net, we made our way back to shore where Jason was waiting with the cameras already rolling. We transferred the fish from the net and into the Compact Carp Cradle before leaving the boat and carefully carried it to the safety of dry land. Closer inspection revealed an almost golden looking scale perfect common which went 29lb on the scales. A short bit of filming and one or two shots later, I was stood in the lake with waders on and Jason on the camera. At the back of the lake ran a train line and just as Jason started to film me releasing the carp, a train came by and made for an awesome slow motion piece of footage which made the capture all the more sweeter! With the fish safely back in the lake, the rod was boated back out to the spot with a handful of Code Red and Tiger nuts over the top.

The darkness quickly drew in and we found ourselves drinking tea in Bruno’s bivvy sheltering from the harsh cold wind that was blowing across the lake. We filmed a closing piece for the day where Jason and Bruno talked about being optimistic for the last night and we thought about going to bed, but with it being the final evening, we sat up for another couple hours drinking tea when a few bleeps rang out from one of our receivers. I looked at Jason thinking it was one of his rods but quickly realised that it was my left rod that I had cast to a snag over 24 hours earlier! I picked up the rod and immediately met a huge amount of resistance. My little 10ft rod was nearly bent double but I soon had things under control, or at least that’s what I thought! A flash of my head torch on the water revealed a massive pair of shoulders that set off to my right like a killer whale and headed for an overhanging tree. It was so powerful, I was sure that I was going to lose it. But thankfully, the fish turned and headed for open water. A couple of minutes later and fish was once again under my feet and just in range for Bruno to slip the net underneath this beast. I think I was more relieved than happy for a second. It had to be one of the hardest fighting carp that I had ever caught.

Bruno transferred the fish into the sling before carrying it to the mat before we got a proper look at just how big this thing was. I was shocked to see the size when the net and sling were peeled back! The rig and Raspberry Ripple Pop Up were carefully removed from its bottom lip and the scales were zeroed. Bruno and I lifted the scales and the needle settled on just over 45lb! What a way to end the trip! Bruno informed us that this one was the second biggest known fish in the lake! I was speechless! Jason and Bruno quickly set up some lighting and I lifted my prize for a few shots and a little filming. We got a lovely group shot of all 3 of us with the fish that will no doubt have made it into a picture frame by now. I tried to get some sleep that night but being pumped after the capture, I found it difficult. 6.30 am came around and I was woken by Bruno’s bite alarm. He was attached to another carp! This lake had been kind to us as we found ourselves talking to the camera with Bruno holding up a 32lb 8oz mirror.

This was certainly a trip that none of us would ever forget. Three venues in a week. All very different to the next and we managed to catch some great fish from each of them. Although I had caught the biggest fish that week, I can honestly say that the two highlights for me were seeing Jason holding the 35lb river common and spending a fantastic week in the very best of company. I for one cannot wait to go back and see what Bruno and that part of France has to offer. So keep a look out for more from Avid Adventures as we continue to travel wherever the fishing and the team members take us! Anthony Molyneux

RICARDO KOSTER PART OF THE FAMILY

PART OF THE FAMILY Ricardo Koster joined the Avid Benelux carp team back in 2017 and stood out as a rising star. He now works directly for the company and has established himself as an integral part of the operation. I had worked for a company for a number of years in the technical world of the sprinkler systems. The company I worked for at the time fell into difficulties and unfortunately my contract was not renewed. Because of this, a number of people had to leave and I was unfortunately one of them. When my contract had come to an end, it was time for me to make a new step. I decided to start my own business as a photographer. It seemed wonderful to be my own boss, but anyone that has their own business will tell you that it’s much more difficult than most people would know. I managed to keep my head above water with some regular work from clients but the competition is tough out there and it didn’t take me long to realise that making a good living in this field was difficult. Out of the blue I received a message from Avid Benelux team member Peter Nys who asked me if I would be interested in having a face to face meeting at the up and coming Carpzwolle show. I was both shocked and 36

flattered at the same time, so I of course accepted the offer and made the journey to Zwolle to meet Avid. When I arrived at the show, I was greeted by Peter, Avid media man Ant Molyneux & Avid product man Jason Umney. They explained to me that Avid were in the process of expanding the angling team in Europe and my name had passed across the desk on several occasions. Ant told me that they were looking for anglers to join the team that met all of their criteria and that I fit the bill perfectly. I was blown away and surprised that Avid had even considered me! But here I was, stood talking to the guys and on the brink of joining the team! So I signed a contract and began the start of my life at Avid. I had been with Avid for a couple of months when I received an invitation from the European Director to come along to the showroom to be kitted out and given the grand tour. A few weeks after meeting with the guys at the showroom and one or

Things were moving along very nicely and I quickly found myself sat at my very own desk at the European distribution centre! My days can be quite long and sometimes challenging, but I love it. make the journey from Rotterdam to Utrecht, but I never let that stop me from getting the rods out whenever I can. I can conclude that my fishing certainly hasn’t suffered since taking the job. My fishing can vary from an overnight session between work, to full weekends on the bank, when time allows. I also like the longer sessions when on holiday from work and I have enjoyed many weeks in France in the past and I hope to do more fishing like this in the near future. For me, I’m just happy to be out there with my rods and my camera. Since joining the team, I have made many new friends and some fantastic anglers too. I have enjoyed fishing the occasional session with fellow team mates Bas van Zundert & Wilco Gerrits. On one of the sessions, we brought along the cameras and between the 3 of us, we put together a short film of the session. I am now planning a longer session for the summer of 2019 with some of the other guys in the team for a social, maybe in Belgium which I’m very excited about! I also spend a lot time talking with the other members of the team from all across Europe, dealing with their product requests and helping out Peter Nys to keep the Avid Benelux Facebook up to date with the latest news from the team. It’s a really great team at Avid and everyone involved are very focused on their fishing and helping to push the brand in a positive direction. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it and blessed to be surrounded by great people. I have a good feeling for my future with Avid and I’m extremely happy and proud to be part of this forward thinking and fast growing carp brand. Ricardo Koster

DANIEL RUSTLER DOWN BY THE RIVER

DOWN BY THE RIVER Team Germany’s Daniel Rustler gives us an overview of what it’s like to fish for huge carp on the river in the heart of busy Frankfurt.

Looking back, my love for river fishing started when I was a kid. Like with most of you, my dad got me into fishing and we used to go to a river. Obviously, I’ve been to a few lakes as well, but I was always missing something. The river! The obvious moving water, the current depending on the water level, the boat traffic, other water sport enthusiasts, all sorts of floating debris and certainly the unknown stock. Can I catch my target species / fish here? Will one of my rods go off? Will it be a small stocky, a standard sized river fish or the sought after dream fish. Everything is possible, that is the attraction for me and draws me to the bank again and again. I caught my first carp float fishing with canned sweetcorn on a small river. I still remember it like it was yesterday, how proud I was to have a small mirror in my net. What a buzz! I've pretty much always lived in areas where a river wasn’t too far away. At a river there is always something going on. The water level is rising and falling, the current is changing, spots I caught fish from last year are dead, others suddenly produce good numbers of fish. Once the water reaches a certain temperature, the fish start to travel serious 38

yesterday. What a buzz!

On one side of the bank I’m sitting right in the city between joggers, dog walkers, cyclists and tourists. People who visit Frankfurt are often interested to know what I am doing here, they ask many questions about the river and the fish I am trying to catch. Very popular are pictures, especially from tourists. Maybe some of you have seen the picture of me and the cyclist?

distances in a river. You either have to stay mobile and fish as many spots as possible, or wait it out on one of the proven spots for the fish to pass by. For quite a few years I have lived in Frankfurt Main directly by the river. When I get up in the morning I open the window and look across the water. That’s some sort of luxury for me and the view of the river always brings a smile to my face.

I was just taking care of a fish on my Any Level Cradle and a guy arrives, jumps off his bicycle, runs down to me with his smart phone already in his hand. After what felt like 100 pictures and an outburst of joy on his part, we say goodbye and he rides away. I think it was a special situation for both of us. Those situations make the fishing in urban areas even more interesting for me.

Depending on the seasons, I fish the entrances of harbours, water inlets, above or below weirs, bridges, small backwaters or prominent areas on an open stretch of the river. Sometimes I fish directly under my feet, sometimes 80, 90 or 100 yards out.

It’s pretty clear that fishing in the city is not for everyone. I sometimes don’t have the nerve to face all of the turbulence. That’s why I also look for spots that are a bit more secluded, so I have a bit of peace and quiet and not as many people passing by.

As different as the spots are the ambience around them is the same. Old city centre, skyscrapers in the CBD, the cathedral, hotels, flashing blue lights, planes, car noises, boat traffic, industrial complexes etc…

I often get asked what is the biggest or heaviest fish that I have caught. It’s a question that is easily answered and obviously I want to catch these exceptional fish, but I learnt from a young age that every fish counts. More

often than not it’s the circumstances which make the fish special for me.

the hook be blunt or I have to adapt to the ever changing conditions.

Sometimes there are times when I have to go home without a fish on my memory card for days or weeks, especially after such dry periods. Even the smallest carp on the unhooking mat is a highlight for me. Trying to catch any fish/carp on the river is my goal, the size is secondary.

That’s how I fish 90% of my spots in the river and I am completely confident with every component! The only thing I change sometimes is the size of hook I’m using and the length of the rig.

On a river I have to anticipate big fish and battle all kinds of obstacles. Therefore I don’t compromise on gear, especially with my End Tackle. I’d rather be safe than to lose a fish because I didn’t use strong enough gear.

Although this is only a short piece about my fishing, hopefully you can see why I love the river and the city which it flows through. Daniel Rustler

In nearly all cases, I use about 1.5m of Pindown Unleaded Leader in 50lb which I splice onto a QC Leadclip. The QC Leadclip enables me to quickly change my rigs and lead. Depending on the current and the bottom I’m faced with, I use an XL Line Dropper on my leader. My standard rig I try to keep as simple as possible, I use a size 4 CRV hook, knotless knot it with 35lb Captive Coated Hooklink. I pair it with an XL Line Aligner and secure my hair with a bit of 2mm Outline Shrink Tube just above the bend of the hook. I use an Anti-Tangle Sleeve to change my rigs quickly should

BENOIT DAVID THE A-TEAM

THE A-TEAM French team member Benoit David reveals what it’s like to be part of the Avid team.

The question I get asked the most on social media is ‘how did I become part of the team at Avid?’ To answer that question fully, let’s go way back to when I was 5 years of age, holidaying with my grandparents. Lots of us had a similar beginning, starting off with a match rod, catching silver fish. But after seeing bigger fish on the bank that other anglers had caught, the desire to fish for bigger fish soon took hold. I quickly turned to predator fishing and by the time I hit 11 years old, I was hooked on carp! My obsession with carp now sees me out on the bank every weekend fishing lakes in my local area. Another passion of mine is photography, when I’m waiting for the buzzers to scream into life, I photograph anything in my surroundings. A natural progression for me was videography. I like to create short sessional pieces for my YouTube channel as well as promotional videos for Avid. 42

2019 AVID GUIDE

I have spent a lot of time learning the craft of both carp fishing and camera work to reach my goals and I continue to learn and take in information whenever possible. I began to share my pictures and videos on social media a few years ago and the interest from others was overwhelming. People liked my work and I quickly gathered a following. It was soon after this that I was approached by Avid to join the team. My now good friends and Avid salesmen Didier & Baptiste had seen my work and put me forward as a candidate to join the team. I was contacted soon after by the guys at Avid HQ and offered a deal and the rest, as they say, is history. There are many great anglers out there that catch lots of carp but complain that they don’t have a deal with a carp brand. The industry is always changing and to simply be a good angler these days is not enough. Love it or hate it, that’s the cold hard truth. If nobody knows about the fish you catch and what you are doing through social media then opportunities simply won’t come along.

Since joining the team at Avid, I have become heavily involved with a whole manner of things which include taking care of the day-to-day running of the French Facebook page, helping to grow the team by scouting for new anglers, providing photo and video content for different marketing and media projects and even translation work. As you can probably imagine, all these things keep me very busy and take up a lot of my time. But I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way! It’s great to be involved with such an active team and many of the anglers contact me on a daily basis with catch pictures and reports of what’s going on in the carp fishing world. Last year, I helped out at the famous Montlucon show where I worked on the Avid stand for the weekend alongside Ian Russell which was a great experience for me! For me, fishing is more than just a hobby. I’m always thinking about the next session or the next capture and come the weekend once my work is done, I’m itching to get out there

than a few days. After all, France is one of the best countries in the world for carp fishing and offers a huge variety of venues, more than I will ever get the time to fish in a lifetime! So, fishing as many venues as I can is my goal during the holidays.

But frequently, I will stay for the weekend and concentrate on an area to try to draw the carp to me.

When I got the call to join the team at Avid, as you can probably imagine, I was very happy.

When it comes to the holidays, one of my favourite ways to fish is to take a road trip around France, which I have done many times now.

I had used a number of Avid products in the past and been very impressed with them. Something that I continue to be!

I will spend a few weeks touring around the country and visiting lots of different venues, never staying in the same place for more

Last year, I helped out at the famous Montlucon show where I worked on the Avid stand for the weekend alongside Ian Russell which was a great experience for me!
