Top Of The

Pops!

Carp ace Ian Russell reveals why he believes the new hookbaits from Sonubaits will help carp anglers everywhere catch more fish. If you’re a carp angler looking for an edge, you need to take a look at this new range of exciting hookbaits. They have been developed in conjunction with the Avid Carp team of consultants, food scientists, chefs and an aquaculture expert so you can be sure they’re going to catch lots of large carp. The flavours have been selected by the Avid Carp team as being the most productive flavour combinations on many different waters and over the last couple of years the hookbaits have been thoroughly tested and the results have been absolutely astounding. Whether you target runs waters or low-stocked pits, this extensive range of baits will help you catch more carp than anybody else around you. I spend most of my time trying to catch as many carp as I can from wellstocked venues, so these hookbaits suit me down to the ground. There are five flavours in the range

4

and within each flavour there are pop ups and bottom baits. The reason we have done it like this is because it gives us the option of fishing in a number of different ways. I will usually start out with three different presentations, a bottom bait, a snowman and a pop up, and I will see if the fish have a preference on the water that I am fishing on in that particular session. Whether I’m fishing over a bed of particles or using a solid PVA bag, you can be sure that I’ll have one of these super-attractive hookbaits on the end of my rig. When I’m fishing over boilies or particles, I tend to use the hookbaits with a really simple rig that incorporates a coated braid, longshank hook and a shrink-tube kicker. When it comes to lead arrangement, I usually use an Avid Carp Flat Clip with a 2.5oz Distance Lead, or if I use a chod rig the 15mm pop ups are ideal.

I’ve tried all of the hookbaits on a variety of different venues and they are all effective. Although I haven’t got a favourite flavour, I tend to find that I’m drawn to the Refresha and Peppered Krill pop-ups, these are both two colours which at the moment I really like as they seems to get takes quicker when fished as a single hookbait cast at showing fish or possibly with a couple of bottom baits on a stringer. Since joining Avid Carp, I’ve started using solid PVA bags more and more. While lots of anglers like to use hi-viz pop-ups like Pineapple and n-butyric in their PVA bags, I prefer to use dull baits that closely resemble the pellets in the bag. For this kind of approach, I don’t think you can go wrong with a small Currami dumbell pop-up. Created by combining curry flavour and Pepperami, these Currami hookbaits boast a unique, spicy aroma which carp cannot resist.

1

Tie a small loop in the end of a length of supple braid hooklink

2

Attach a Sonubaits pop-up to the rig and fix it in position with a boilie stop.

3

Carefully thread a piece of 0.5mm silicone tubing onto the hook link.

4

Manoeuvre the point of the hook through the tubing and fix it in position with a knotless knot.

5

Thread a length of shrink tubing down the hook link and steam it over a boiling kettle.

6

Finally, add a split shot to the supple braid to weigh the hookbait down.

“Although I haven’t got a favourite flavour, I tend to find that I’m drawn to the Refresha and Peppered Krill pop-ups,”

There is also a Booster Cloud liquid which has to be seen to be believed, it has a multitude of applications; you can dip your hookbait in before casting for added attraction and once in the water this will ooze off adding flavour, colour and highly soluble food ingredients into the water or you can glug your hookbaits in the Booster Cloud, this gives them chance to take on the extra flavour the longer you leave them. Booster Cloud is also PVA Friendly which means it can be added to bag and stick mixes or poured directly into a bag, and once the bag dissolves you are left with a cloud of colour, taste and smell around the hookbait. Booster Cloud can also be added to a spod mix for spodding over Zigs, this creates a cloud around the Zig which fish just home in on. Recently, while targeting a heavily pressured day-ticket venue that contains lots of large carp, I realised just how effective these hookbaits are. At the start of my campaign, I quickly realised that all the anglers around me were fishing over large beds of bait. Rather than spodding out loads of bait and spooking all the fish, I decided to use single hi-viz hookbaits. For the majority of the campaign, I used the Sonubaits dumbells because they were slightly different from the normal round

6

boilies that everybody else was using. Because the hookbaits are so bright and full of flavour, it wasn’t essential to introduce any freebies. I used to wander around the lake, find where the fish were holding and flick single hookbaits onto them. I tried the whole range of hookbaits on the lake but it

INGENIOUS, IRRESISTIBLE

was the Hot Chocolate that produced most of the bites. During my time on the lake, I managed to catch countless carp including loads of twenties and a couple of thirties. There isn’t a carp in the country that won’t go for these hookbaits, so whether you’re bag fishing, using them over particles or casting single hookbaits onto showing fish, they’re bright enough and attractive enough to work in every scenario you can think of.

Avid Carp Consultant

Sonubaits Gallery

Over the last few years, Sonubaits consultant Neil Edge has caught his fair share of large carp. As soon as we found out that he would be targeting a large southern pit that contained some truly enormous carp, we sent him a few tubs of the new Sonubaits hookbaits to try. Shortly after giving the super-attractive pop-ups a go, Neil landed one of the lake’s largest residents. Read on for the full story….

Name: Neil Edge Fish weight: 51lb 4oz Venue: Southern syndicate Bait: Sonubaits Refresha pop-up

Arriving at the 55-acre lake in Hampshire at first light, Neil decided to set up in a swim that had been neglected by other anglers for a couple of weeks. The swim allowed him to fish towards a band of weed where the carp had been held up for most of the year. Neil positioned three rods tight to the weed bed at about 70 yards range. In a bid to get the carp grubbing around in the weed, he spodded out a mixture of Sonubaits Code Red prototype boilies, Hemp ‘N’ Corn and Tiger Fish pellets. He then flicked three Sonubaits Refresha pop-ups on short chod rigs over the top of the mix. The fishing was

8

relatively slow to begin with apart from the relentless bream and tench that couldn’t resist his bait. With the weather set to improve, and the nuisance fish still feasting on his spod

mix, Neil decided to introduce three more kilos of spod mix. This certainly did the trick because at 5am the

following morning his alarm burst into life and the battle commenced. Everything went solid so Neil applied steady pressure and pumped the fish and weed back towards the bank and the waiting net. After 10 minutes the fish was near the bank and the net was slid under, after separating the weed it revealed a big dark mirror which has only been caught five times in the last 12 years. The scales went round to 51lbs 4oz. What a result.

Spod your way to success Big fish expert Chris Lowe reveals why he never goes fishing without a few tins of Sonubaits particles. If you don’t want to waste time preparing your own particles, you need to take a look at this extensive range of tins. The baits are cooked to perfection inside the tin, trapping in all the attractive juices and flavours that would usually be lost if you were to boil up the particles yourself. Because the hemp and hookbaits are cooked in the tin, the flavour from each soaks through the baits. I spend most of my time targeting pressured day-ticket venues that contain a good head of large carp. While lots anglers try and nick the odd bite using PVA bags, I prefer to create a competitive feeding area by introducing a bed of Sonubaits particles, pellets and groundbait. I love combining one of the tins with a bag of Sonubaits Tiger Fish pellets and a sprinkling Tiger Fish groundbait.

10

After spodding out a kilo of mix at the start of the session, I will introduce ten spodfuls every hour or so. This keeps the swim active, introduces regular attraction and encourages the carp to compete for the free grub. The

ratio between the hemp and hookbaits is ideal, so it’s just a case of hairrigging a tiger nut or a grain of corn onto your rig and casting it over the top. While fishing down at Linear Fisheries, I’ve found that the tins of Hemp ‘N’ Black Tigers have been absolutely devastating. Black tigers have the same nutritional properties as standard tigers, but they offer a colour that most carp haven’t seen before. If you’re targeting pressured carp, get on the black tigers! In short, these tins are convenient, perfectly prepared and carp absolutely love them. If you’re looking for an edge this season, get on the tins!

BAIT GUIDE 2012 The hemp in Sonubaits’ particle tins is a high quality, large grain with a supreme splitting rate. Because the hemp and hookbaits are cooked together in the tin, all of the juices are kept with the bait which optimises the level of attraction to all species of fish. Unlike when mixing particles separately, the flavour of the hemp is infused into the hookbaits meaning they’re even more irresistible. In these handy, ready-to-use tins you get the perfect amount of hookbaits and free offerings. All of the particles are prepared to the highest standards, so not only do fish find them incredibly tasty, they’re also totally safe to use. Henp ‘N’ Tigers Hemp and tigers is the perfect combination when big carp are the target. Tiger nuts are rich in natural proteins, oils and sugars which carp find irresistible and combined with Sonubaits hemp are the perfect match to help you catch your biggest ever specimen.

Hemp ‘N’ Black Tigers Black tiger nuts are a different variation to standard pale tigers, where the skin naturally turns black. They are a fantastic alternative to a standard tiger nut bait, as they have the same nutritional properties and natural attraction but offer all this in a colour most carp won’t have seen before. They’re a real edge!

Hemp ‘N’ Mini Tigers Mini tiger nuts are smaller versions of a standard tiger, however they are harvested earlier making them sweeter in taste. The combination of Hemp ‘N’ Mini Tigers is perfect for margin fishing, and also ideal for mixing in with spod mixes. Their unusual shape makes sure carp never grow tired of picking them up.

Hemp ‘N’ Crushed Tigers This combination is perfect when using tiger nuts as a hookbait. Because the nuts have been crushed, it allows their natural sugars and attractants to leak out into the water at a faster rate, creating the perfect feeding area.

Hemp ‘N’ Corn The hemp and corn combination is ideal for all species of fish. The corn in the tins is a specially selected variety with plump, succulent grains which can be hair rigged or hooked. This provides a totally versatile can of bait, ideal for feeding in the margins or using at range through a spod.

Hemp ‘N’ Maize Hemp ‘N’ Maize is an all time classic combination, responsible for the capture of many big carp. Because the maize has been cooked for the optimum time, the sugars which come out during this process are infused into the hemp seed, giving a new and unique natural flavour to the hemp.

Hemp ‘N’ Giant Maize Giant maize really has to be seen to be believed. These very large grains of maize are perfect for larger carp, and many anglers use it’s size and pulling power for overseas trips and on venues where nuisance species are prevalent.

Hemp ‘N’ Maple Peas Maple peas are a truly classic bait which have fooled a huge amount of carp, tench and bream over many decades. The infusion of the hemp flavour through the maple peas in the cooking process enhances the flavour of what is an under-rated, yet very effective particle bait.

Hemp ‘N’ Peanuts Hemp ‘N’ Peanuts is the perfect way to fish with safelyprepared peanuts. This is a devastating combination that maximises the full attraction of the not-so-humble peanut. On waters where nut fishing is allowed, this is a combination that will give you the edge over other anglers.

Get ready for

Action Everything you need to catch carp... Action Boilies have been developed to have an instant impact and catch carp straight away. They are perfect for catching carp quickly on well stocked waters. This is down to a highly digestible base mix which releases the flavours and water soluble ingredients which in turn attracts the carp and creates a feeding zone. The flavours are all proven carp catchers and with Crab & Crayfish, White Chocolate, Strawberry and

Pineapple forming the range. There is no need to look anywhere else when choosing a shelf life boilie. Inside each bag we have included free matching popups which are also available separately, these have an even higher amount of soluble ingredients drawing fish to them. There is also a Spod Mix which is a blend of pellets and sizes, due to the blend when they are in water they break down at different speeds creating a feeding area that has a mixture of

pellets in size and texture. The smaller pellets break down quickly into fine particles which keeps the carp grubbing around for the larger pellets. The Dip & Glug is PVA Friendly so it can be added to bag mixes and stick mixes, and it comes in a wide mouth jar so you can attach a PVA Stick and dip the whole rig in the jar to absorb the flavour before casting out, once you have cast it starts to release the flavour straight away pulling carp towards the hookbait.

Whether you’re new to surface fishing or you’re a floater expert, you’ll certainly benefit from having some of these buoyant baits in your armoury. Hookable Floaters A surface hookbait that’s full of attraction. Although they are soft enough to hair rig, these 11mm floaters are super durable so they can withstand repeated casting. Once in the water, they release an attractive scent that pulls carp towards the upper layers. Available in Strawberry and Fishmeal flavours.

Floater Pack This convenient bucket contains everything you could possibly need for a good surface fishing session. The bucket contains boosted fishmeal floaters, which are ideal for loose feeding with a catapult or spod. The bucket contains two tubs of Hookable Floaters in Strawberry and Fishmeal flavours. Simply introduce the boosted fishmeal floaters until the carp are feeding confidently then cast a Hookable Floater amongst the slurping carp.

If you need to introduce floaters beyond catapult range, try the Avid Carp Surface Spod. It allows you to deposit floating baits at ranges never obtained before.

Carp Boilie Crush

Super Carp Method Mix

This is an irresistible blend of crushed boilies, hemp, carp pellets and halibut pellets. Although it’s primarily designed to be used as a Method mix, the groundbait also works well inside PVA bags. Lots of the Sonubaits specimen carp anglers use the Boilie Crush inside a solid bag with a sprinkling of high-oil pellets. Once on the bottom, the groundbait creates a bed of particle feed that carp find simply irresistible.

This unique Method mix is designed for modern day anglers who want to catch more carp. The mix is high in proteins, oils and stimulants designed to single out the larger carp. Some anglers may associate the Method with targeting small carp, but Mark Bartlett has caught lots of specimen carp using this incredible mix. The groundbait contains high levels of feed attractors that constantly draw carp into your swim. It mixes easily and because of its binding properties creates a

sticky mix to which pellets, corn and broken boilies can be added. If mixed correctly, Super Carp Method Mix will withstand casts of over 100 yards but will still breakdown quickly and easily in water. If you’re looking for an edge when targeting large carp, it’s well worth giving this high quality groundbait a try!

Robin Red Stick Mix

■■ Sonubaits Bagging Bucket

There’s no doubt that Robin Red is one of the most effective carp attractors of all time. So it’s no surprise that this mix has accounted for countless large carp. It contains fishmeals, fish oils, hemp, sugars, spices, taste enhancers, amino acids and Robin Red. Robin Red is an ultra effective blend of bird food, peppers and spices with high vitamin content to create a valuable food source. It’s ready to use straight away and comes in a small, handy bucket.

Barbel & Carp Paste and Pellets If you’re looking for the very best baits for specimen fishing, we believe the new Sonubaits Barbel & Carp products provide the perfect range when targeting big fish. Barbel & Carp Paste • Paste is often used to enhance hookbaits for barbel fishing. And we believe Sonubaits’ Barbel & Carp Paste provides a higher level of attraction than any other. • The paste we have designed specifically for this purpose is based around hemp– which is one of the best barbel baits available. This has been flavoured with three of the best barbel flavours we know of – Spicy Sausage, Cheesy Garlic and Halibut. • It also has a unique texture, so it can be wrapped round any bait or fished by itself providing an irresistible scent trail.

Barbel & Carp Pellets • Barbel & Carp Pellets are designed to be needle friendly, high in oil and leak out flavour and attractants in water. The flavours we’ve used match the Barbel Paste, so are ideal for fishing on the hair and wrapping the paste round.

Elliptical Barbel & Carp Feed Pellets • The perfect pellet for barbel & carp, these high oil, high protein pellets are elliptical in shape which means that they don’t roll on the riverbed, concentrating the barbel in the area you’re fishing. • Available in: 4mm, 6mm, 8mm & 12mm.

16

Barbel Liquid • Designed to be squirted on groundbaits or pellets to give extra attraction. As they are oil based flavours, they will soak into hard hookbaits like Pellet O’s and make them last longer in the water. • Available in: Hemp & Halibut, Hemp & Spicy Sausage, Hemp & Cheesy Garlic.

INGENIOUS, IRRESISTIBLE

Pour hot water over Barbel & Carp Elliptical feed pellets, add some Hemp & Halibut Liquid Enhancer and leave for 30 minutes, then add a small amount of pellets straight from the bag, this makes a really sticky mix which can be moulded round a lead and once in the water it breaks off slowly downstream over the hookbait.

BAIT GUIDE 2012

Hemp & Hali Crush • 95% crushed hemp and halibut pellets • Rich in oils and feed particles. • Provides a constant and prolonged stream of oils which fish will naturally home in on. • The variation of feed particle size will entice fish to feed and take as much of the bait as it can. • This versatile mix can be used as a Method mix, stick mix, feeder mix, spodded or just balled in to create a bed of particles.

Hemp & Hali Crush is not just a groundbait for Barbel, I have had some fantastic catches using it as a stick mix and in a PVA bag.

1

Halibut Pellets, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13 ,17 and 22mm • The use of halibut pellets has increased massively over the last few years; this is due to their fantastic fish catching capabilities. • The pellets contain the optimum balance between protein, fat, carbohydrate, energy, vitamins and minerals. They are carefully formulated using a mix of high quality protein and energy sources including highly palatable fishmeals, pre-digested fishmeals and fish oils. The use of betaine, green lipped mussel meal and shrimp meal also ensures high levels of attraction. From the ingredients – the protein and oil content – you can see why this is such good bait.

Crushed Halibut Pellets • Crushed halibut pellets make a fantastic addition to all baits. We crush the halibut pellets leaving bigger chunks of crushed pellets as well as much finer particles, as this will keep fish feeding for longer. It can be used neat as a groundbait or stick mix, or added to existing groundbaits to enhance them. • A good tip when baiting with halibut pellets is to mould them into a ball. This can be done by putting them in a tub and adding hot water, and for added attraction, Sonubaits’ Halibut flavour. Leave for about half an hour and the pellets will absorb the liquid and become sticky enough to mould into a ball.

Marine Halibut Groundbait

Halibut Pellets in PVA Bags • Called ‘Go Bags’ these pre-filled bags are ready to go. The ultimate in accurate baiting. • Simply fold the bag, nick your hook through it and cast it out. There are 10 pre-tied PVA bags filled with 4mm Halibut pellets and some free 10mm mixed boilie hookbaits.

• A blend of crushed halibut pellets, crushed carp pellets and fishmeals which has been sieved to create a very versatile groundbait. It can be used on a method feeder, in a cage feeder or simply balled in. It is equally at home on commercial carp venues or on rivers for barbel and bream. • Because of its heavy nature it will also act as a carrier for other particles such as pellets or corn and gives off a very rich cloud of attractants creating a tight feeding area.

Spicy Sausage Spicy Sausage Halibut Pellets

Pellet O’s

• Halibut pellets are the modern day barbel anglers first choice of bait when fishing for barbel, they seem to work on every river they are used on. Spicy Sausage is one of the all time great barbel flavours accounting for many specimens.

• Pellet O’s are a drilled pellet in an 8mm and a 12mm in Crab, Halibut and the new Spicy Sausage Flavour.

• By combining the flavour of Spicy Sausage and Halibut pellets we have created a bait which has already proved to be a success on rivers throughout the UK & Europe. Once in the water these pellets provide a scent trail full of attraction which pulls fish towards the hookbait from downstream.

18

INGENIOUS, IRRESISTIBLE

• Being pre drilled there is no preparation needed they are ready to be used with a Quickstop or Hair Rigged. • When hair rigging the ideal bait stop is a Pellet Stop, these make sure that the Pellet O’s cannot slide off the hair. • Each pack contains enough hookbaits for a good number of sessions and also contains two Korum Quickstops on hook hairs and a Quickstop needle making it the complete hookbait pack.

BAIT GUIDE 2012

Spicy Sausage Success Ade Kiddell is one of the UK’s most experienced barbel anglers with double figure barbel from nine different rivers in the UK and abroad. Over recent years he has honed his skills and now is confident to take his methods and bait to any river. Spicy Sausage has to be one of my all time favourite flavours for fishing for barbel, they seem to recognise it straight away as food, and some of the feeding responses I have seen when using this bait have been amazing. Working closely with Sonubaits we have developed my two favourite baits to include the best Spicy Sausage flavour available; so now Halibut pellets and Pellet O’s are enhanced with the same concentrated flavour which draws fish into the swim.

“As a hookbait I like to use the Spicy Sausage Pellet O’s, being pre drilled there is no preparation needed”

can be done the day before or on the bank. This allows the pellets to absorb the water and become softer and also releases the flavour and the oils. It is then perfect for using in a feeder. I then squash them into the feeder tightly so when it is cast into the swim the pellets get slowly washed out of the feeder downstream creating a nice tight area of feed, if the flow of the swim is high then I squash them in really tightly and if the flow is slower then I will not put them as tightly so they still trickle out of the feeder slowly. This is a method which I have developed and call the Monkey. I tend to start fishing with a long hooklink of around 5 foot although I will alter the length, sometimes shortening it to about 2 feet and sometimes lengthen it to about 8 feet depending on conditions, flow and how the fish are feeding. I always try

to cast to the same spot so the bait stays in the same place but quite often changing the length of the hooklink will lead to an almost instant take. As a hookbait I like to use the Spicy Sausage Pellet O’s, being pre drilled there is no preparation needed and I simply use either one or two on a hair rig securing them in place with a Korum Pellet Stop. These last for plenty of time even in fast flowing water but If I am fishing at night and I need to be sure the pellets stop on the hair I use ones which I have soaked in the Hemp and Spicy Sausage Liquid Enhancer as the hemp oil creates a barrier that does not allow water to soften the pellet too quickly.

BAIT GUIDE 2012

The Fin on S-Pellets S-Pellets are my first choice hookbait when fishing the feeder. I find that they are the ideal texture for using on a Method feeder or Banjo feeder as they are perfect for using with a Quickstop and won’t come off on impact with the water. Because they are so easy to use it doesn’t take any time to re-bait and therefore I maximise my fishing time. With the levels of oil and fish attractors that are in S-Pellets feeding fish actually seek them out which results in quicker bites. Because of their fairly firm texture I also know that nuisance fish cannot pull them off the hair so even if bites are hard to come by I know that when fish are in the area the hookbait will still be exactly how I want it. I take about 10 out of the bag and have them on my side tray and then reseal the bag keeping the rest fresh. And because of their potency I know

Licence to... The England Feeder Team captain is one of the most experienced anglers out there and he has been working closely with the team at Sonubaits developing a Krill based attractant destined to form one of the most popular ranges in 2012. Krill is a small shrimp like animal which is present in all oceans. It is the main food source for many fish, including some species of Whales. It’s caught and dried in the Antarctic Ocean to make Krill meal and then used in the aquaculture industry for feeding to fish on fish farms and in aquariums. It has excellent nutritional properties and is therefore highly attractive to fish. I went to Sonubaits to see if they could create a bait range incorporating the qualities of Krill with their expertise and knowledge from the aquaculture industry. They were then able to source an extremely high grade of Krill meal usually sold as a dietary supplement for humans. We discussed the inclusion of Krill meal in a groundbait and experimented with some different mixes to see how it performed. I wanted something which was very versatile so it could be used on the Method and also balled

in on the pole line. Using Sonubaits’ experience and knowledge of how different ingredients perform we were able to create a number of different mixes which I took out and tested. I look for two things with any bait – first and foremost it has to consistently catch winning weights of fish and I can assure you that it does; it also has to be easy to use as I often need to just mix a groundbait when I get to my peg and it has to be ready when the ‘all in’ sounds. After a number of trials and slight tweaks we came up with Supercrush Krill, which performs exactly how I wanted it to; ideal for Method feeders and when pole fishing, it has a very distinctive pungent aroma which all fish seem to associate with food. When we had finished the development of Supercrush Krill we decided to look at creating baits which would accompany the groundbait such

“it has to consistently catch winning weights of fish and I can assure you that it does” as Soft Hooker Pellets, Feed Pellets, Pastes, and a Liquid. This was quite easy as we already have some of the best products available it was just a case of simply including Krill meal in the baits to enhance them and then checking to make sure they performed as well as expected. Krill meal is such a superb attractant that I wanted to be able to use it by itself for dusting maggots, meat, corn etc so it is available in a shaker style pot in the Flavour Shaker range, which I know will get me plenty of extra brown envelopes throughout the year.

50 : 50 Method & Paste Des Shipp is one of the country’s best match anglers; being a current member of Team England fishing in the World Championships and also being the current Parkdean Master, his experiences in Match Fishing mean there is no better person to develop bait for the modern angler. Method feeder fishing is changing. It’s something I’ve noticed a lot recently and I believe this is because carp have become more aggressive in their feeding behaviour. How many times have you cast a Method feeder and straight away you get a couple of small knocks which doesn’t turn into a proper bite? This happens because the carp will hear the splash of the Method feeder and they associate that with food, in knocking the Method feeder they will dislodge the groundbait therefore leaving no attraction apart from the hookbait, this means you have to wait much longer for a bite.

“50:50 works perfectly and it compresses on a Method feeder easily”

you want them to be; around your hook bait. I started working with the Sonubaits team early in 2011 to develop a groundbait that would stop these problems. It needed to be really sticky and hard so it could be compacted onto a Method feeder with 100 percent confidence that it wouldn’t come off on the cast, impact with the water or when it was knocked by the initial interest from a carp. This is when Sonubaits 50:50 Method and Paste was developed. Because it’s sticky and binds well it can also be mixed with a little more water to create a paste, ideal for fishing on the pole. The Sonubaits knowledge of how different ingredients perform when mixed is invaluable when it comes to developing baits – it didn’t take long

It also happens when you are fishing tight to an island – you will get a few knocks and the feeder will slide down the slope and again you will have no attraction around the hookbait. If you’re fishing in deep water you need to know that the groundbait around the Method is still there when it hits the bottom otherwise you are again left with just a hookbait and the attraction is through the water column actually taking fish away from where

after the initial concept for the bait to be ready for me to trial. It works perfectly and compresses on a Method feeder easily, and after a few small changes to the ingredients to get the required colour it became the first groundbait I would consider when fishing the Method or paste on waters up and down the country. Have a think about how many times you have had a couple of knocks which have not turned into a bite. Sonubaits 50:50 Method and Paste is the solution.

Spicy, Meaty Method Mix A blend of pellets, fishmeals, spices and meat extracts are crushed together to make a unique flavoured groundbait.

CAUTION: HOT! Spicy, Meaty Method Mix • Spicy Meaty Method mix is an all round groundbait perfect for targeting specimen fish such as carp, bream, tench and barbel. It can be used in a number of different ways depending on the fishing situation. • For use on the Method feeder simply add two pints of water to the bag of groundbait and mix thoroughly, leave this for 45 minutes to allow the groundbait to fully absorb the water and riddle. It is equally suitable for use in cage feeders or can be balled in when mixed slightly dryer.

DUTCH MASTER’S Dutch Master Mix and Silvercrush Match are a superb new range of European style, bread-based groundbaits that have been designed to International match winning standards.

The impressive new Dutch Master Feeder and Silvercrush Groundbaits have been designed in conjunction with some of Holland’s best match anglers, along with Sonubaits’ core team of match internationals like Des Shipp, Lee Edwards and Tommy Pickering.

Dutch Master Feeder Mix Gold Dutch Master Feeder Mix has been specifically designed for feeder fishing on rivers, lakes and canals. The carefully blended formula can be mixed in a variety of ways to suit a wide range of fishing situations. This easy to mix groundbait binds well for long range fishing on deep waters. It can also be mixed to release an irresistible range trail of particles on its way to the bottom. It is simple to mix, just add water and mix until the desired consistency is reached, then allow 30 minutes for the particles to fully absorb the water, a little more may need to be added at this stage, then pass the groundbait

through a riddle to break it up, and it is ready to use. Originally designed for the big deep rivers in Holland, but equally suited on the lakes, rivers and canals in England this groundbait is made for use in cage or open ended feeders. It has the right structure and stickiness for this type of fishing. It ensures this groundbait is able to transport lots of baits like casters, maggots and worms releasing them easily on the bottom building up a concentrated area of feed.

Crushed Expander pellets have been a favourite of many Sonubaits anglers who like to experiment and make a unique groundbait for themselves which they can adapt to different fishing situations. It forms a base to many groundbaits as it is light and fluffy but can be mixed to be relatively inert, so it has a multitude of uses. It is important to get the best out of all Match fishing groundbaits and they need to be riddled after they have absorbed the water, this way it breaks up any lumps and makes sure the water is distributed evenly so you can be sure that it will all perform the same, riddling also adds air to a mix which helps it to break up in the water. Once it is riddled it is then easy to see if more water is needed to get it to perform how you want. Because of its inertness it will stay where it is cast or potted in, but because of its light, fluffy nature when it is in the water Supercrush Expander will cloud up easily when it is disturbed by feeding fish which creates a feeding area that other fish home in on, and because of its lightness it doesn’t fill

the fish up as quickly so keeps them in the swim for longer, this also makes it a good groundbait over winter when you need to keep the feed content low. Supercrush Expander makes an excellent groundbait straight from the bag for using on a Method feeder in shallow water or on the pole; it can also be over wetted and made into slop and then shipped out in a pole cup and poured in to create a cloud. It is also an excellent base to mix with other ingredients to make a totally new groundbait. It is easy to mix in other ingredients such as any of our Flavour Shakers to enhance or change the flavour, or by adding Stiki Pellet it will make the groundbait stickier and bind better to a method feeder. You could bulk it out with breadcrumb or mix it with molehill soil to make it darker and heavier, you can sieve it to create a finer mix or add other coarse particles or pellets to make a coarser mix. It can also be added to heavy groundbaits to make them lighter and help them break up; the choice really is endless.

A

Situation! Andy Findlay is one of England’s finest commercial anglers and also one of the most forward thinking match anglers around. In fact, it’s ‘The Fin’ who’s the brains behind products like Flatbed Method Feeders, Fishing the Cone and most recently the Banjo Feeder, so when he comes to us with a new concept for bait – we listen. A common problem I’ve had when fishing the Method is that I cannot be 100 percent certain that the pellets stay on the Method feeder through the cast, impact with the water and the drop through the water. If they’re not still on the Method when the feeder hits the bottom, bites will be a lot more difficult to come by. This is increasingly important when using the Banjo feeder or the Cone. I have played around with sugar, flour, and Horlicks to try and get the right consistency, however it was a complicated process and I was never happy with the outcome.

I contacted Sonubaits and explained the problem to see if they could help. When I was next at the Sonubaits office they had an array of liquids and powders which they said would be an answer to my problem and so the experimenting started. I took away about 20 products which all worked to some extent in the respect that they made pellets stickier. I then experimented using the products when fishing – I wanted something that increased my catch rate which was as easy to prepare as possible. Eventually I narrowed it down to a couple of products which I would be happy to use as they worked perfectly, and went back to the Sonubaits offices. They had got a selection of measuring spoons as they wanted to make the preparation as easy as

possible. Between us, and with a few final tweaks from executive chef and match angler Ed Warren, we came up with the perfect product. It was just the job as it was easy to prepare and worked perfectly, the more you added the stickier it became.

“I wanted something that would increase my catch rate, which was as easy to prepare as possible.”

it can be added to groundbaits to make them bind better, it can be used with maggots to make them stick together and I have also been using it to make sure when I feed 2mm Pellets out of a CAD pot they get through the smaller fish in the mid layers to the bottom. It is now what I consider to be an essential product for fishing the Method, Banjo or Cone and always has a place in my bait bag.

Pumped Expander Pellet Perfection Lee Edwards is well known for his commercial fishing and an important factor involved in this is his preparation of his favourite Fin Perfect Expander Pellets. Everyone prepares differently, but this is how I do it. I see so many anglers who simply take expander pellets from a bag and pump them with no preparation, then they seem to spend the whole match shipping in and out to re-bait after their pellet has come off on a lift and drop or striking at a fish. This takes up valuable time in a match. Understanding the structure of a pellet is the most important thing. Fin Perfect Expanders have a honeycomb structure and the pockets of air within the pellet must have water in them, not air, for the pellet to sink. Pellet Pumps are designed to suck the air out of the honeycomb structure and fill the air pockets with water. If you do this with a pellet straight from the bag it

can cause the structure of the pellet to develop a fracture and therefore you get pellets which split when you are trying to hook them or fall off the hook because the honeycomb structure has been damaged. To get around this, I soften my pellets the night before a match. To do this I take the required amount I need and dunk them under water for five seconds. This gives them an even coating of water, but not too much, otherwise they will go soggy. Remove them from the water and place in a polythene bag, seal the bag and put it in the fridge. Leaving them overnight allows them to absorb the small amount of water which has coated them and they will soften slightly.

“Fin Perfect Expanders have a honeycomb structure and the pockets of air within the pellet must have water in them, not air, for the pellet to sink.” I don’t touch them again until I arrive at my peg. Then I will pump them and leave them for five minutes, release the valve and they should all sink. What has happened is that overnight the moisture has soaked into the centre of the pellets, so when you pick one up before pumping they have more of a spongy consistency – this means that they won’t fracture when the air is removed and replaced by water. Once they’re prepared I keep them on my side tray in a tub with a small amount of water – just enough to keep the bait moist. And that’s it. That’s the way that I prepare them! They stay firmer and behave as you want them to, which means more time fishing and less time re-baiting.

Give ‘em

a pasting! Paste fishing is such a devastatingly good method it cannot be ignored but so many anglers miss out by not fishing it correctly or not fishing it at all. We asked former Fish-o-Mania winner Neil McKinnon to tell us more about the principles of this approach... I think a lot of match anglers have no confidence that they can fish paste properly as it can be difficult to mix and fish with. A well mixed paste should fall off the hook within seconds if suspended and therefore angler’s aren’t not confident the paste will still be intact when it hits the lakebed. Sonubaits have taken all the worry out of mixing paste by developing a range which requires the same volume of powder and water to be mixed together to create the ideal consistency for fishing paste on the pole.

“It turns really sloppy but give it about half an hour and the paste will absorb the water.” It’s really easy to mix too. Simply fill any cup with ONE to ONE paste and empty it into a mixing bowl, then fill the same cup to the same level with water and add that to the paste mix. It will turn really sloppy but give it about half an hour and the paste will absorb the water. Give it a good mix and then make it into a ball – it’s now ready to be used. To put it around a hook, simply take a suitable sized piece and make it into

38

a small ball then press the middle so it flattens. Now put the hook into the indentation made by your thumb and mould it around the hook. Place a few 4mm Fin Perfect Feed pellets in the paste pot provided in each bag and then pop the ball of paste on top. Ship it out and gently pour the whole lot out when in position. Using a paste float dotted right down you will be able to see that your paste is still on as the float will still be dotted down and as soon as the float comes up in the water, you know

INGENIOUS, IRRESISTIBLE

the paste is off and it’s time to re-bait. The paste which has come off builds the swim to keep the fish interested. By using ONE to ONE paste I can now fish with total confidence that I have mixed the paste correctly.

PASTE

ONE to ONE

Mixing traditional paste has never been easy, but ONE to ONE solves this problem, providing you with the perfect paste every single time. • Add one cup of powder to a mixing tub • Add one cup of water to the paste powder • Mix thoroughly and leave for 30 minutes • Free inside every bag is a Preston Innovations Paste Pot • Place pellets in the Paste Pot first to help feed

Mixing ONE to ONE

your swim

Paste fishing often seems to select bigger fish and therefore you need to have balanced tackle. Use size 12 PR36 hooks tied to 0.17 Reflo Power and PB Paste Floats. The float choice is important as they are a self cocking float with the eye at the end of the big buoyant bristle. This is so when your paste does come off you will see as your float will lift, it is important to fish dead depth and keep the line short between the pole and the float so there is never any line drag pulling the float and hook from the paste. When tying on the hook leave a tag of nylon which will offer something else for the paste to cling to. It is also important to plumb the depth a couple of times through the match, especially on waters with soft beds, this is because quite often fish

will feed so hard searching for the paste they will create a depression where you are fishing, this will alter the depth of the water which if you do not respond the paste will be fished off the bottom and therefore come off more easily reducing your fishing time.

To mix ONE to ONE paste simply add the same volume of water and paste to a bowl and mix. Leave for 30 minutes to let the paste absorb the water, then it can be made into a ball and is ready to be hooked.

■■ Fibre Paste is the first paste of its kind that can be directly hooked and still be cast long distances.

Fibre Paste A revolution in paste fishing for the modern angler. • This paste has a unique texture with a soft consistency which means that it can be fished with confidence on a pole, waggler or feeder. The bait is still really soft and fluffy and easily presented at distances of over 60 yards.

• Totally unique, stringy consistency • Will easily cast over 60 yards

• Normally if paste is fished on a rod it has to be made so stiff so that it will stay on for the force of the cast, this then means that the hook will not pull through therefore making hooking the fish more difficult.

• Easier to use than standard pastes • Stays on in water much longer than standard paste • Rugged texture means increased attraction

2

3

• Use larger hooks and heavier line with Fibre Paste as it catches larger than average fish and the larger hook will also help to keep the paste on. • Fibre Paste sinks slowly which means it can be cast on a waggler rod at cruising fish and it will fall slowly giving more time in the feeding zone. • It is a presentation which fish won’t have seen before and therefore will not be able to resist.

4

1. Mix in water, a little at a time, to reach desired consistency. 2. Mix thoroughly. 3. Mould into a ball. 4. Tear off a good-sized piece for easy hooking.

Andy Findlay’s Tip

1

• Once you have mixed the paste make it into a ball and just tear a pinch off and simply hook it on, it does not need to be moulded, this way it leaves a rough edged paste unlike any other. Once it is in the water small particles of the paste begin to fall

away enticing fish to feed, this also feeds the swim.

They can be hair rigged and some of our anglers use them with a bait band so they can change baits quickly.

leave them there till they are ready to use them, this makes them really soft which means the hook will pull through them very easily when striking into a fish. Create your own baits with

Flavour Shaker! At Sonubaits we are always looking for new ingredients which will improve baits, with this in mind we source what we believe will be fish catching ingredients from all over the world. A lot of ingredients which get delivered we dismiss straight away as they are not suitable, but there are some which we instantly know will good for fishing. We can then start experimenting with them in baits in different inclusion levels and seeing how it affects the feeding reaction of fish. This involves sending some of the new ingredient to our anglers for them to include in their already successful bait. Then after a few weeks using the new ingredient the anglers will ring Sonubaits to discuss the merits of the new ingredient and if the ingredients prove that fish will actively seek them out to eat them more so than the bait without the new ingredient then we can then start using that ingredient within a range, possibly even developing a whole range around the ingredient.

“Flavour Shakers are some of the best ingredients we have come across in the last few years Flavour Shakers are some of the best ingredients we have come across in the last few years which are now available as a raw ingredient. This means that you can enhance your own groundbait or add flavour to ones which you already use. There are various different ways of using Flavour Shakers. A common and easy way is simply to add some of the

42

Flavour Shaker to a groundbait before mixing it, that way it will make it more potent. Flavour Shakers can also be used to add more flavour to feed pellets, this is especially important when on a fishery where everyone uses the same pellets, by adding some of the Flavour Shaker to the water before you add it to the pellets will make your pellets more potent than other anglers pellets, by doing it this way it will allow the flavour to penetrate the pellets, this can also be done by adding the dry powder to the dry pellets before adding the water, or you could use the Flavour Shaker as a dusting for the outside of the pellets once you have added the water. Flavour Shakers can also be used to enhance expander pellets. Simply add some Flavour Shaker to the water you are going to pump your pellets in which flavours the water and then pump your pellets as normal. They can also be used to flavour things like corn or meat, simply drain the corn or cube the meat, put it in a plastic bag and add some Flavour Shaker and leave it to absorb into the baits.

INGENIOUS, IRRESISTIBLE

Flavour Shakers are also ideal for specimen fishing. They can be used as key ingredients in bag mixes. To make a very potent bag mix use Super Seaweed as the base ingredient, with all the natural salts and flavour it is irresistible to carp, add to this some crumbled Currami bottom baits, Super Octopus, a little Spicy Sausage and some Currami Booster Cloud and use a Currami hookbait. If you want to use the Peppered Krill as a hookbait simply replace the Spicy Sausage Flavour Shaker with Krill. Flavour shakers are also very useful in a good spod mix, they can be added at any proportions which suit your bait and provide an excellent cloud of flavour if used as a sloppy spod mix. You can very quickly and easily create an entire range of bait which is totally unique to you, keep experimenting till you find a combination which suits your style of fishing and the venues you fish and you will be enjoying great success in no time.

Bait Paint • The Sonubaits range of dyes can be used to prepare baits in advance or tweak baits whilst you are fishing – ideal for switching the fish on again when your swim has gone quiet. • Bait Paint is so simple to use just spray over your baits giving an even coating, leave for a couple of minutes and then they are ready to be used. • Bait Paint can be used on pellets, boilies, corn, meat, groundbait, particles etc.

Drilled Boilies Drilled Boilies have been developed to make hair rigging a boilie a quick and simple task. The kit is supplied with two Korum Quickstops on hook hairs, a Korum Quickstop Needle and enough boilies for a good session catching plenty of fish. Boilies are usually hair rigged and often when putting a baiting needle through them they will split or fracture causing them to be weak and come off the hair. At Sonubaits we have eliminated that problem by pre-drilling the boilies for you and supplying them with two Korum hook hairs with Quickstops and a Quickstop needle making them even easier to use.

Drilled Boilies • Pre-Drilled boilies • Complete with two Korum hook hairs. • Korum Quickstops and Needle supplied Flavours / colours Available

BAIT GUIDE 2012

Liquid Flavours Liquid flavours form an important part of a modern match anglers tactics. This extensive range allows you to add extra flavour to groundbaits, pellets, maggots, meat and corn. The flavours can be used when preparing bait at home, or on the bank to give your bait an

added advantage. These Liquid Flavours are particularly effective on heavily fished match venues as they will enhance the bait with a flavour which is highly soluble in water this disperses from the bait and brings fish to your peg.

Paste Pellets • There are six flavours available in the range, Bacon Grill, Halibut, Fishmeal, Catmeat, White Fish and Supercrush Green with added Betaine. These pellets are made from paste and so have all the properties and advantages of paste but in pellet form. • They can be squeezed and moulded to any shape required, and wrapped round baits and because they are made from paste they are easy to hook or hair rig. • Supercrush Green with added Betaine is perfect when used in conjunction with our Supercrush Green Groundbait.

Band’um When fishing commercials it is important to keep changing your hookbait until you work out what the fish want on that particular day, this can also change during the course of a match, so changing hookbaits should cost you as little time as possible. The Band’um range is perfect for using with a bait band as the durable consistency, dumbbell shape and slightly bulbous end means that once the bait band is on they will not slip off therefore you can catch a number of fish on the same bait, saving you rebaiting time. There are a number of different colours and flavours in the range which means you can keep experimenting until you find the right colour for the day and situation. When fishing the method I will generally start off with something bright like the Pineapple or White Chocolate as this visual attraction gives the fish

something to home in on, but if they do not want bright baits I will quickly change to a Tigerfish or F1 Band’um which are more of a pellet colour. When pole fishing on the bottom I will again start with a bright colour which stands out against the bottom but if I start fishing shallow I will change to a darker one such as Supercrush Green as it will stand out better in mid water if it is clear, however if the water is cloudy I will go with something like the bright pink Krill which can be seen much more easily by the fish. My rig for fishing with the Band’um range is really simple and something

you can look to put together easily. I use a Preston Innovations’ PR36 in a size 18 or a PR38 in a 16 for snag fishing, tied to Reflo Power hooklink material, in anything from 0.15 diameter to 0.21 for proper big ‘uns! A bait band tied to the end of the hair enables rapid bait changes, and a simple loop attachment at the other end enables me to use it in conjunction with a Korum Quick Change Bead on the Method or a Preston Innovations Dacron Connector on pole rigs, or a simple loop to loop when waggler fishing. So get on the Band’ums band wagon! They’re a quality product that delivers consistent results.
