The Lady Tiger squad comprises three returning letterwinners and four newcomers—three freshmen and one junior transfer. This young group heads into the 2011 campaign looking to continue a recent pattern of success. Since Lee Taylor Walker took the reins in 2007, Memphis has climbed steadily in national and conference rankings and produced the winningest season in seven years in 2009-10 with 13 victories. Walker and his program expect to keep progressing and hitting new milestones this spring.

Returners Anchored by All-Conference USA selection Courtney Collins, the Lady Tigers also return letterwinners Andrea Arques-Garcia and Kelly Gray. These three went 31-40 overall in dual matches last year and posted a 4-5 mark in conference play. The sophomore class will have the responsibility of being the leaders of a group with no upperclassmen following the TAYLOR H. TAYLOR ASSISTANT COACH

loss of four letterwinners in seniors Amanda Brown, Marjorie Ondeck, Dara Toulch and three-time All-C-USA honoree Ashley Murdock.

Newcomers Newcomers make up the majority of the Memphis roster this season, but they all know what it takes to capture a title. Stefanie Mikesz and Sarah Witkowski both have won a state title for their high schools in singles, Kathleen Hawkins has won three, and Tyler Junior College transfer Mariya Slupska currently holds the Junior College doubles title. Recent successes for the incoming netters include Hawkins being named “Miss Tennis” last summer as the top senior women’s netter in the state of Michigan as determined by The Detroit Free Press. Mikesz also received a bid to compete in pre-qualifying doubles at the 2010 All-American Championships during the fall slate.

2011 Women’s Tennis Preview Home of the Lady Tigers The Racquet Club of Memphis has been the Mid-South’s premier tennis facility since it opened its doors in 1974. The Racquet Club has hosted the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship, an annual stop on the ATP Men’s World Tour each February since 1976. In 2002, the Racquet Club of Memphis also became host to the Cellular South Cup, an ATP Women’s World Tour event, held during the same time as the men’s event. The Lady Tigers love their new home, but plans to enhance and expand are already in the works. The final phase of renovations at The Racquet Club is set to begin soon and includes sprucing up the outdoor courts with an outdoor plaza complete with refreshment stand and tables, along with the addition of covered grandstand seating that will help fashion a top collegiate tennis environment.

The Racquet Club: Courts The sign at the front says it all: The Racquet Club of Memphis is the official home of Tiger Tennis. In October of 2009 the Tigers moved in, but the 2010-11 season marks the first full year that the U of M tennis programs will call the Mid-South’s premiere facility ‘home.’ It rivals the finest clubs in the country with 186,000 square feet of facilities, including six recently refurbished top-of-the-line, post-tension system hard courts as well as 11 indoor courts. If you’re a tennis player, it’s tough to find a better place to practice and play.

Oh, the luxuries of being a Lady Tiger. Between practices and matches, Tiger netters now have an exclusive space that allows them to work hard and play hard off the court. The state-of-the-art player lounge, known as the “Tiger Den,” features a training room, study area, kitchen, private locker rooms, racquet stringing room and offices for the coaching staff. The striking den boasts four 48-inch big-screen televisions, which allow student-athletes to study film of their performances on the court or simply kick back on the leather couches and relax while watching television or playing on the most popular gaming systems.

Team Information

Global Roster The 2010-11 women’s tennis squad includes players from near and far. Fulton, Miss., is the closest hometown of current players, a mere two hours away from the U of M campus. Other Lady Tigers hail from farther locations in the United States, such as Georgia and Michigan, while also pulling internationally from Spain, Germany and the Ukraine. It’s a group from diverse backgrounds forming one Memphis family.

Courtney Collins was selected to be one of nine collegiate tennis players from across the country to represent Team USA at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China in August 2011. Collins joins four others from USC, UCLA, and Texas to make up the women’s roster. Facing the Best

Memphis women’s tennis prides itself in scheduling some of the toughest competition in the country to push the skillset of its players and 2011 will see more of the same. The Lady Tigers are slated to face 12 teams ranked in the top 75 and four top-ranked teams in its first five matches with No. 11 Clemson, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 18 Georgia and No. 70 BYU. While Memphis netters struggled on the road during the 2010 spring campaign, going 0-13 in away matches, Memphis amassed an 8-0 record in dual matches at The Racquet Club of Memphis and looks to continue their home winning streak.

The U of M kicked off the tournament portion of the 2010-11 campaign by hosting the Memphis Collegiate Invitational at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Courtney Collins sailed through to win the top singles flight and freshman Sarah Witkowski put together a solid outing as well, winning two matches against opponents from Austin Peay and Tulane to advance to the finals of her singles draw before falling to an Evansville's Carolyn Caire. Minor injuries would plague Witkowski and several other Lady Tigers throughout the rest of the fall season, preventing them from participating in every tournament. Next on the schedule was the Roberta Alison Classic, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where Collins upended No. 118 Alex Clay of Alabama, 6-2, 6-3 before withdrawing in the draw finals. Collins and newcomer Stefanie Mikesz made program history by receiving the firstever bids to compete at the All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., in pre-qualifying singles and doubles. Collins was taken down in a hard-fought, three-set match to Lily Kimbell of Georgia. The next day, the tandem found themselves up 5-0 and 6-3 at points during the match, but was edged out by Illinois duo Breanna Smutko and Chelcie Abajian, 9-7. Collins and Mikesz were joined by Kelly Gray at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in in October. Collins advanced the furthest in the main singles draw out of the three participants, defeating Mandy Brown of Louisville, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), in the round of 64 and Myriem Mhirit of Eastern Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32 before falling in the round of 16. Andrea Arques-Garcia had her best outing at the June Stewart Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., hosted by Vanderbilt University, where she recorded two wins against opponents from Lipscomb. Also in that tournament, Kelly Gray and Kathleen Hawkins downed tandems from Lipscomb and MTSU. The U of M closed out the tournament portion of the 2010-2011 campaign by traveling to Champaign, Ill., to participate in the Midwest Blast against stiff, top-ranked competition in No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 24 Illinois, and No. 42 Oklahoma. Collins logged the Lady Tigers' only win that weekend defeating Misia Kedzierski of Illinois, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

the ITA award after a stellar playing career and a long list of off-the-court accomplishments. Walker helped to re-form the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at the University of Memphis, and coordinated visits to Streets Ministries and St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Walker’s revamped roster is faced with the task of trying to improve on 2010, when his group finished 13-17 in dual matches. That same season he coached senior Ashley Murdock to her third consecutive All-Conference USA second team selection and Collins to her first All-C-USA nod. In 2008-09, Walker's second season at the helm of the Memphis women's tennis program, the Tigers went 11-13, including wins over conference foes Southern Miss and UAB.

Walker currently works with Campus Outreach, a ministry on the U of M campus, as the faculty/staff representative. Campus Outreach focuses on developing students' spiritual lives. Walker came to the Tigers following one year at Clemson University. There, he was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. At Memphis, Walker was a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Memphis, graduating in December of 2006 with a Master's Degree in human movement sciences.

LEE AND ERIN WALKER

In his first season as head coach, Walker led the Lady Tigers to a 9-13 mark. In the fall of 2008, Walker coached Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck to the semifinals of the 2008 ITA Southeast Regional in Winston-Salem, N.C. Murdock and Ondeck defeated doubles tandems from No. 13, Clemson, No. 17 North Carolina and No. 25 Tennessee on their way to the semifinals.

The 2010-11 campaign marks Lee Taylor Walker’s fourth season as head coach of the University of Memphis women’s tennis program. Walker is very familiar with not only Memphis and the surrounding tennis community, but also with what it means to be a U of M student-athlete, as he was a standout singles and doubles players for the men's team from 2001-2004. Walker spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s program and spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant for the Lady Tigers, prior to being named the head coach of the women's team in 2007.

Walker, a native of Jackson, Tenn., played for Memphis from 2001-04, teaming with Ben Stapp in his first season in Memphis to become the highest-ranked doubles tandem in school history, ranking No. 12 in the country at the end of the fall 2001 season. Walker was also a nationally-ranked singles player at Memphis ranking as high as No. 48 in the country. He won 54 singles matches playing primarily at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles during his three-year Tiger career, and was 64-29 in doubles. He was the school's first-ever Conference USA First Team honoree and was named to the Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Decade Team.

college standout Mariya Slupska from Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, who currently holds the junior college doubles title. Walker’s solid recruiting abilities also fostered the addition of newcomers Kathleen Hawkins, Stefanie Mikesz and Sarah Witkowski.

The Lady Tigers steadily improved in the rankings under Walker’s direction, and his influence also can be seen in the wins column. In the 2010 dual match slate, the team recorded the second-best win total in program history, and most since the 1999-00 season, with 13. Walker is at the helm of a young squad this year that will be anchored by returning letterwinner Courtney Collins. Walker’s top recruit in 2009, Collins posted a 17-9 record at the No. 2 slot in her first season donning blue and gray and was selected to the All-Conference USA second team. One area Walker has been working on with Collins is building up her confidence against ranked opponents. Collins showed vast improvement in the summer and fall of 2010 with big wins over several top players, including victories over No. 118 Alex Clay of Alabama, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 123 Vanja Tomic of Austin Peay, 6-0, 6-0. Additionally, Collins set milestones as the first Lady Tiger ever to receive a bid to the All-American Championships in addition to obtaining one of only five spots on Team USA’s women’s tennis roster for the World University Games in August 2011.

"We are pleased to have a coach with the credentials of Lee Taylor Walker take over for Coach Peterson," said Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson. "He has proven himself both as a player and student-athlete for the University of Memphis and we could not have been more pleased with his efforts as an assistant coach for the men's and women's tennis teams over the past year. I'm sure he will carry on the fine tradition that is Tiger tennis." Off the court, Walker was named the recipient of the 2004 ITA/Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership award, which he received as part of U.S. Open Festivities. Walker, a graduate of University School in Jackson, Tenn., received

The U of M kicked off the month of February with a win over Kennesaw State at The Racquet Club of Memphis before traveling to the Northeast and partook in two close team battles. Ultimately, the U of M was taken down by Boston College, 5-2, and just narrowly fell to No. 44 Yale, 4-3. Two points against Yale came in the form of doubles victories from the pair of Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck, as well as Collins and Kelly Gray, with the most notable win coming from Murdock who took down Yale’s 87thranked Stephanie Kent, 7-5, 6-4, in singles play. The Lady Tigers subsequently returned to Memphis and pulled out back-to-back wins against teams from Samford and Austin Peay before facing a daunting, month-long road schedule. In seven straight matches away from home, the squad dropped to No. 20 Arkansas and No. 35 Oklahoma in Fayetteville, Ark., while Murdock picked up another significant victory against Stephanie Roy of Arkansas, 7-6, 6-2. The netters rebounded to pick up a win against Arkansas Tech before journeying to Arizona in the beginning of March. Once out west in Arizona, Memphis secured a win against Eastern Arizona College, 7-0, before dropping to No. 32 Arizona State. Two days later, in the face-off against No. 56 Arizona, both Murdock and Collins took nationally-ranked players to three sets in singles, but couldn’t find a way to come out on top as Memphis fell to the Wildcats. After defeating Richmond, the netters faced yet another ranked opponent in No. 56 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where Murdock struck again, hanging on to defeat Ragini Acharya, 6-1, 0-6, 10-5. Starting with their last match in March, the Lady Tigers would go on a four-match winning streak, taking down Tennessee Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, UAB and Middle Tennessee. The streak was capped off by a perfect 8-0 run in singles and doubles by Kelly Gray the first week of April, which earned her Conference USA Player of the Week honors. However, conference foes Southern Miss and Tulane proved to be too much too handle and Memphis closed out the regular season with two losses. Southern Miss wouldn’t have the same luck at the end of April in Tulsa, Okla., at the Conference USA Championships. Behind doubles victories from the tandems of Collins and Gray and Amanda Brown and Dara Toulch, plus singles wins from Murdock and Collins, the Golden Eagles fell, 4-2, and the Lady Tigers advanced to face No. 27 SMU in the quarterfinals. The top-ranked Mustangs prevailed, 4-0, to end the season for the U of M. At the conclusion of the spring slate, Murdock and Collins had each tallied 17 wins, tying them for the team-high. Both garnered all-conference honors for their successes on the court.

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million residents, while retaining the charm and downto-earth feel of a small town. Downtown Memphis recently realized a building boom valued at $2.3 billion which transformed the heart of the city. One of the most visible projects was the construction of AutoZone Park, the downtown ballpark which is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekendlong event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such artists as

M

the MarKeys, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Museum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum Theater which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways intersecting the city. For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its inception as a normal school dedicated to the education of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologicallysavvy graduates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mission while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennessee, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universities; they come here to study subjects that are offered nowhere else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recognized and respected throughout the academic and scientific communities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most historic and productive periods. From the faculty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto yearbook was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s offices. In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931 the students created a campus newspaper, The Tiger Rag; and in 1935 the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became president - the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950 graduate studies were initiated, and in 1954 the school switched from a quarter to

a semester system. In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first African American students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Center and a 12-story library. In 1983 MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by another name change and another building boom. In 1994 MSU became the University of Memphis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was completed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctoral-extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s largest city, it is the flagship of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, The University of Memphis has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five stateapproved Centers of Excellence.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last seven years and played for the Men’s Basketball National Championship title in 2007-08. In addition, for the last 11 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 30, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 14 total C-USA championships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tournament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the women’s soccer program claimed consecutive league championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Johnson is currently spearheading his second major capital campaign which benefits nearly every area of the Tiger Athletic Department. Included in the $12.9 million project is a new addition to the Athletic Office Building, a weight room and turf practice field for Tiger Football, a redesign of the Tiger baseball stadium that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the completed golf practice facility, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basketball practice facility, a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms and the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame to honor Tiger athletes. Johnson’s first capital campaign was previously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign included a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex addition, a new basketball

practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tiger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Properties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the partner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promotions and sponsorships, as well as the official athletic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Tigers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M entered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Tiger athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, Johnson leads a department that set a school record with 51 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher during the spring 2010 semester. For the most recent academic year, which includes fall 2009 and spring 2010, 339 studentathletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA and eight had a 4.0 for the year and 33 others had a 4.0 either in the fall or spring. For the spring 2010 semester, the athletic department as a whole posted its highest GPA ever with a 2.94 and 23 studentathletes garnered a 4.0 GPA. In May 2010, 48 athletes earned their degrees, marking the largest group for one ceremony since 2002 when the athletic academic services department began keeping record.

Before taking over Tiger Athletics, Johnson was responsible for directing a Temple program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nationally-visible programs in men’s basketball and football. He was named Temple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previously led the department at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 seasons after serving as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Committee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three children: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchildren and one great grandson.

T ige r T r a d iti o ns When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, “We fight like Tigers.” The nickname was born. More and more the nickname “Tigers” was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use “Normals” or the “Blue and Gray” when referring to the University. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the “Teachers” or “Tutors.” The Tiger nickname would return, but not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis. For over 35 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been a Bengal Tiger named TOM. TOM attends all Tiger Football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year. TOM travels in style in a custom-designed, climatecontrolled trailer, always with police escort. As one of only two universities in America with a live tiger mascot, The University of Memphis is unique in its Tiger Tradition. As a project of the Highland Hundred, no public or University funds are used to provide for TOM’s needs, and no University resources are required in his care. TOM is a powerful and majestic symbol of the University of Memphis, and his presence presents constant opportunities to educate Tiger fans young & old through the preservation of one of the world’s most recognizable endangered

species. The first Tiger, TOM, was procured by the Highland Hundred Football Boosters in 1972 and served the U of M faithfully for nearly 20 years until passing away in February of 1992. The Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University in a ceremony at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on November 11, 1972, during a football game against the University of Cincinnati. TOM had initially been named ‘Shane’ at the suggestion of the breeder’s daughter. Once in Memphis, though, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries were submitted. The list was ultimately reduced to two choices, Shane, and TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis. TOM won. In the fall of 1991, the Highland Hundred Tiger Guard received TOM II as a gift from Tom and Carolyn Atchison of Florence, Alabama. TOM II would serve with pride for 17 years through

Shortly after TOM II’s death, the Tiger Guard began the search for a new tiger to serve as TOM III, and a stroke of good luck was realized in a discussion with the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center in Rock Springs, Wis. Faced with three new cubs born August 31, 2008, after an unexpected pregnancy at their facility, founders Jeff Kozlowski and Jenny Meyer offered to donate one of their young tigers to serve as TOM III. TOM III was introduced at a press conference on November 17, 2008, and the Tiger Guard officially presented him to the University on November 22 during a football game against UCF.

T he L o g o The University of Memphis’ official logo was redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis, Tenn. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping Tiger coming out from behind the letter. The new logo is an “M” with a leaping Tiger coming up over the center of the “M.”

S ch o o l C o l o r s The University of Memphis’ official school colors of Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.
