ALL HOME MATCHES IN BOLD
A Bright Future On the Rise The Lady Tiger squad comprises three returning letter winners and four newcomers—three freshmen and one junior transfer. This young group heads into the 2011 campaign looking to continue a recent pattern of success. Since Lee Taylor Walker took the reins in 2007, Memphis has climbed steadily in national and conference rankings and produced the winningest season in seven years in 2009-10 with 13 victories. Walker and his program expect to keep progressing and hitting new milestones this spring.
Returners Anchored by All-Conference USA selection Courtney Collins, the Lady Tigers also returns letter winners Andrea Arques-Garcia and Kelly Gray. These three went 31-40 overall in dual matches last year and posted a 4-5 mark in conference play. The sophomore class will have the responsibility of being the leaders of a group with no upperclassman following
the loss of four letter winners in seniors Amanda Brown, Marjorie Ondeck, Dara Toulch and three-time All-C-USA honoree Ashley Murdock.
Newcomers Newcomers make up the majority of the Memphis roster this season, but they all know what it takes to capture a title. Stefanie Mikesz and Sarah Witkowski both have won a state title for their high schools in singles, Kathleen Hawkins has won three, and Tyler Junior College transfer Mariya Slupska currently holds the Junior College doubles title. Recent successes for the incoming netters include Hawkins being named “Miss Tennis” last summer as the top senior women’s netter in the state of Michigan as determined by The Detroit Free Press. Mikesz also received a bid to compete in pre-qualifying doubles at the 2010 All-American Championships during the fall slate.

2011 Women’s Tennis Preview Home of the Lady Tigers The Racquet Club of Memphis has been the Mid-South’s premier tennis facility since it opened its doors in 1974. The Racquet Club has hosted the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship, an annual stop on the ATP Men’s World Tour each February since 1976. In 2002, the Racquet Club of Memphis also became host to the Cellular South Cup, an ATP Women’s World Tour event, held during the same time as the men’s event. The Lady Tigers love their new home, but plans to enhance and expand are already in the works. The final phase of renovations at The Racquet Club is set to begin soon and includes sprucing up the outdoor courts with an outdoor plaza complete with refreshment stand and tables, along with the addition of covered grandstand seating that will help fashion a top collegiate tennis environment.
The Racquet Club: Courts The sign at the front says it all: The Racquet Club of Memphis is the official home of Tiger Tennis. In October of 2009 the Tigers moved in, but the 2010-11 season marks the first full year that the U of M tennis programs will call the Mid-South’s premiere facility ‘home.’ It rivals the finest clubs in the country with 186,000 square feet of facilities, including six recently refurbished top-of-the-line, post-tension system hard courts as well as 11 indoor courts. If you’re a tennis player, it’s tough to find a better place to practice and play.
The Racquet Club: Tiger Den Oh, the luxuries of being a Lady Tiger. Between practices and matches, Tiger netters now have an exclusive space that allows them to work hard and play hard off the court. The state-of-the-art player lounge, known as the “Tiger Den,” features a training room, study area, kitchen, private locker rooms, racquet stringing room and offices for the coaching staff. The striking den boasts four 48-inch big-screen televisions, which allow student-athletes to study film of their performances on the court or simply kick back on the leather couches and relax while watching television or playing on the most popular gaming systems.
Courtney Collins - Team USA Global Roster The 2010-11 women’s tennis squad includes players from near and far. Fulton, Miss., is the closest hometown of current players, a mere two hours away from the U of M campus. Other Lady Tigers hail from farther locations in the United States, such as Georgia and Michigan, while also pulling internationally from Spain, Germany and the Ukraine. It’s a group from diverse backgrounds forming one Memphis family.
Courtney Collins was selected to be one nine collegiate tennis players from across the country to represent Team USA at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China in August 2011. Collins joins four others from USC, UCLA, and Texas to make up the women’s roster. Facing the Best
Memphis women’s tennis prides itself in scheduling some of the toughest competition in the country to push the skillset of its players and 2011 will see more of the same. The Lady Tigers are slated to face 12 teams ranked in the top 75 and four top-ranked teams in its first five matches with No. 11 Clemson, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 18 Georgia and No. 70 BYU. While Memphis netters struggled on the road during the 2010 spring campaign, going 0-13 in away matches, Memphis amassed an 8-0 record in dual matches at The Racquet Club of Memphis and looks to continue their home winning streak. Top-ranked Competition (According to the latest ITA rankings 1/4/11) • No. 6 North Carolina • No. 11 Clemson • No. 15 Georgia • No. 18 Ole Miss • No. 28 USF • No. 32 Tulsa • No. 36 Princeton • No. 45 Indiana-Bloomington • No. 48 Rice • No. 58 Auburn • No. 69 College of Charleston • No. 73 BYU

The U of M kicked off the tournament portion of the 2010-11 campaign by hosting the Memphis Collegiate Invitational at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Courtney Collins sailed through to win the top singles flight and freshman Sarah Witkowski put together a solid outing as well, winning two matches against opponents from Austin Peay and Tulane to advance to the finals of her singles draw before falling to an Evansville's Carolyn Caire. Minor injuries would plague Witkowski and several other Lady Tigers throughout the rest of the fall season, preventing them from participating in every tournament. Next on the schedule was the Roberta Alison Classic, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where Collins upended No. 118 Alex Clay of Alabama, 6-2, 6-3 before withdrawing in the draw finals. Collins and newcomer Stefanie Mikesz made program history by receiving the firstever bids to compete at the All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., in prequalifying singles and doubles. Collins was taken down in hard-fought, three-set match to Lily Kimbell of Georgia. The next day, the tandem found themselves up 5-0 and 6-3 at points during the match, but was edged out by Illinois duo Breanna Smutko and Chelcie Abajian, 9-7. Collins and Mikesz were joined by Kelly Gray at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in in October. Collins advanced the furthest in the main singles draw out of the three participants, defeating Mandy Brown of Louisville, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), in the round of 64 and Myriem Mhirit of Eastern Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32 before falling in the round of 16. Andrea Arques-Garcia had her best outing at the June Stewart Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., hosted by Vanderbilt University, where she recorded two wins against opponents from Lipscomb. Also in that tournament, Kelly Gray and Kathleen Hawkins downed tandems from Lipscomb and MTSU. The U of M closed out the tournament portion of the 2010-2011 campaign by traveling to Champaign, Ill., to participate in the Midwest Blast against stiff, top-ranked competition in No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 24 Illinois, and No. 42 Oklahoma. Collins logged the lady Tigers only win that weekend defeating Misia Kedzierski of Illinois, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

college standout Mariya Slupska from Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, who currently holds the junior college doubles title. Walker’s solid recruiting abilities also fostered the addition of newcomers Kathleen Hawkins, Stefanie Mikesz and Sarah Witkowski.
the ITA award after a stellar playing career and a long list of off-the-court accomplishments. Walker helped to re-form the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at the University of Memphis, and coordinated visits to Streets Ministries and St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Walker’s revamped roster is faced with task of trying to improve on 2010, when his group finished 13-17 in dual matches. That same season he coached senior Ashley Murdock to her third consecutive All-Conference USA second team selection and Collins to her first All-C-USA nod. In 2008-09, Walker's second season at the helm of the Memphis women's tennis program, the Tigers went 11-13, including wins over conference foes Southern Miss and UAB.
Walker currently works with Campus Outreach, a ministry on the U of M campus, as the faculty/staff representative. Campus Outreach focuses on developing students spiritual lives. Walker came to the Tigers following one year at Clemson University. There, he was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. At Memphis, Walker was a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Memphis, graduating in December of 2006 with a Master's Degree in human movement sciences.
Lee and Erin Walker
In his first season as head coach, Walker led the Lady Tigers to a 9-13 mark. In the fall of 2008, Walker coached Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck to the semifinals of the 2008 ITA Southeast Regional in Winston-Salem, N.C. Murdock and Ondeck defeated doubles tandems from No. 13, Clemson, No. 17 North Carolina and No. 25 Tennessee on their way to the semifinals.
The 2010-11 campaign marks Lee Taylor Walker’s fourth season as head coach of the University of Memphis women’s tennis program. Walker is very familiar with not only Memphis and the surrounding tennis community, but also with what it means to be a U of M student-athlete, as he was a standout singles and doubles players for the men's team from 2001-2004. Walker spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s program and spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant for the Lady Tigers, prior to being named the head coach of the women's team in 2007.
Walker, a native of Jackson, Tenn., played for Memphis from 2001-04, teaming with Ben Stapp in his first season in Memphis to become the highest-ranked doubles tandem in school history, ranking No. 12 in the country at the end of the fall 2001 season. Walker was also a nationally-ranked singles player at Memphis ranking as high as No. 48 in the country. He won 54 singles matches playing primarily at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles during his three-year Tiger career, and was 64-29 in doubles. He was the school's first-ever Conference USA First Team honoree and was named to the Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Decade Team.
The Lady Tigers steadily improved in the rankings under Walker’s direction, and his influence also can be seen in the wins column. In the 2010 dual match slate, the team recorded the second best wins total in program history, and most since the 1999-00 season, with 13. Walker is at the helm of a young squad this year that will be anchored by returning letter winner Courtney Collins. Walker’s top recruit in 2009, Collins posted a 17-9 record at the No. 2 slot in her first season donning blue and gray and was selected to the All-Conference USA second team. One area Walker has been working on with Collins is building up her confidence against ranked opponents. Collins showed vast improvement in the summer and fall of 2010 with big wins over several top players, including victories over No. 118 Alex Clay of Alabama, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 123 Vanja Tomic of Austin Peay, 6-0, 6-0. Additionally, Collins set milestones as the first Lady Tiger ever to receive a bid to the All-American Championships in addition to obtaining one of only five spots on Team USA’s women’s tennis roster for the World University Games in August 2011.
"We are pleased to have a coach with the credentials of Lee Taylor Walker take over for Coach Peterson," said Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson. "He has proven himself both as a player and student-athlete for the University of Memphis and we could not have been more pleased with his efforts as an assistant coach for the men's and women's tennis teams over the past year. I'm sure he will carry on the fine tradition that is Tiger tennis." Off the court, Walker was named the recipient of the 2004 ITA/Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership award, which he received as part of U.S. Open Festivities. Walker, a graduate of University School in Jackson, Tenn., received

The U of M kicked off the month of February with a win over Kennesaw State at The Racquet Club of Memphis then traveled to the Northeast and partook in two close team battles. Ultimately, the U of M was taken down by Boston College, 5-2, and just barely fell to No. 44 Yale, 4-3. Two points against Yale came in the form of doubles victories from the pair of Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck, as well as Collins and Kelly Gray, with the most notable win coming from Murdock who took down Yale’s 87th-ranked Stephanie Kent, 7-5, 6-4, in singles play. The Lady Tigers subsequently returned to Memphis and pulled out back-to-back wins against teams from Samford and Austin Peay before facing a daunting, month-long road schedule. In seven straight matches away from home, the squad dropped to No. 20 Arkansas and No. 35 Oklahoma in Fayetteville, Ark., while Murdock picked up another significant victory against Stephanie Roy of Arkansas, 7-6, 6-2. The netters rebounded to pick up a win against Arkansas Tech before journeying to Arizona in the beginning of March. Once out west in Arizona, Memphis secured a win against Eastern Arizona College, 7-0, before dropping to No. 32 Arizona State. Two days later, in the face-off against No. 56 Arizona, both Murdock and Collins took nationally-ranked players to three sets in singles, but couldn’t find a way to come out on top as Memphis fell to the Wildcats. After defeating Richmond, the netters faced yet another ranked opponent in No. 56 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where Murdock struck again, hanging in to defeat Ragini Acharya, 6-1, 0-6, 10-5. Starting with their last match in March, the Lady Tigers would go on a four-match winning streak, taking down Tennessee Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, UAB and Middle Tennessee. The streak was capped off by a perfect 8-0 run in singles and doubles by Kelly Gray the first week of April, which earned her Conference USA Player of the Week honors. However, conference foes Southern Miss and Tulane proved to be too much too handle and Memphis closed out the regular season with two losses. Southern Miss wouldn’t have the same luck at the end of April in Tulsa, Okla., at the Conference USA Championships. Behind doubles victories from the tandems of Collins and Gray and Amanda Brown and Dara Toulch, plus singles wins from Murdock and Collins, the Golden Eagles fell, 4-2, and the Lady Tigers advanced to face No. 27 SMU in the quarterfinals. The top-ranked Mustangs prevailed, 4-0, to end the season for the U of M. At the conclusion of the spring slate, Murdock and Collins had each tallied 17 wins, tying them for the team-high. Both garnered all-conference honors for their successes on the court.
