GAFFER’S VIEW Heys Online Review caught up with 1st team manager Jon Lyons after Thursday’s training session at Salford Sports Village for his views on the last 7 days “Saturday’s victory over Hindsford was another big step forward for us. On a terrible pitch down at Squires Lane I thought we coped extremely well. Hindsford threw a lot at us throughout the game and the lads dealt with it, for the whole 90 minutes and I feel the result was a comfortable one. Wooders was great at the heart of our defence, he took complete control back there. Ryan McGreevy, for me, was again a stand out performer. He’s worked tirelessly throughout. Ryan has been more available to us recently which has helped him secure a place in the team and he’s really found his feet. Overall it was a great performance from everyone. Brilliant to see! We’re taking every game as it comes and that approach coupled with our confidence in our own ability to deliver is working. Up this weekend is a trip to 3rd placed Walshaw which is 1 of our hardest fixtures. The lads have to sick together and stick to our game plan, if we stay focussed we can get the 3 points, but it’s a big test, a big game! We’re most definitely up for it!”

PROGRESS… (With a little help from our friends) New Dressing rooms are on site….. Heys development plans for their hoped for move to the North West Counties League are gathering pace. The new dressing room building is now on site ready for internal works to be carried out whilst the ground has been prepared this weekend for the spectators covered standing area. The club have until 31st March to complete the work ready for a ground grading inspection on which will hinge their prospects for promotion back into the semiprofessional ranks. Anyone who can assist in this process either contributing labour or in sponsorship can contact Paul Hinchy on 07891 972038.

You’re our friends Prestwich folk, you!!

Dominant display topples Hindsford and keep Heys top. Prestwich Heys delivered a dominant performance as they defeated reigning Champions Hindsford at Squires Lane. Jon Lyons side controlled the game throughout to record their tenth win in the last twelve games and go four points clear at the top of the table. Whilst it was not always the prettiest of performances, there was no questioning Heys work rate and determination to succeed in a game played on a difficult bobbly pitch against physical opponents. However, with impressive performances all round Heys stood up to be counted and out played their hosts in every department to maintain their push for promotion. From the off Heys seized the initiative to pen Hindsford back. Ashford Blake headed over from a Lyons cross before Conor Landers got clear only to see his shot smothered by ‘keeper Matthew Ince. Blake and Landers the combined to open up the home defence again only for the former to be denied by a cruel bobble as he shot and thus skew his shot wide. With the hosts struggling to contain Heys some heavy tackles went in, not least one on Danny Eyres which was fortunate only to attract a yellow card. However, Heys stuck to their task and George Powell was next to go close with Ince denying him at the foot of the post. With the pressure and corner count mounting the break-through came in the 35th minute when an in swinging corner by Jon Lyons beat Ince at the near post for a deserved lead. It was an advantage Heys took into the interval and they picked up where they left off in the second period increasing their lead within eight minutes of the restart. The tireless Landers, who had terrorised the home defence throughout, found space again and fired in shot that Ince could only parry and as the hosts struggled to clear Blake charged down a clearance to send the ball into the bottom corner. Hindsford, like the Champions they are, refused to lie down but Heys, driven on at the back by the impressive Phil Woodcock, showed great defensive strength to keep the hosts at arm’s length. All the while, they remained a threat on attack and they increased their lead in the 70th minute when George Powell swung in a cross come shot that deceived Ince all ends up to drop in at the top corner. The Hindsford stopper however prevented further damage to his team in the 80th minute with a fine double save to deny Blake. Whilst the home ’keeper had endured a busy afternoon it was a measure of Heys control that their ‘keeper Steve Dryden did not have make his real save of the game until the 87th minute when he tipped over a Tom Stacey header.

Inside Heys – ‘Macca’ Reserves v Royton town. This was a massive game for us, Royton were coming in to this unbeaten in 5 games. We started slowly, and we didn't seem to get going at all. Royton duly got their goal and deserved it. We needed a rocket at this point to get us going. For the last 10 mins of the 1st half we seemed to spark into life and began to play the passing game that has kept us at the top all season. Jeff and the senior lads rallied round at half time, and we came out 2nd half with purpose, we were chasing and hounding Royton and at this point they didn't know what had hit them, but we still couldn't get that illusive goal. But we dug in and kept believing, the young lads were immense 2nd half, Danny was having more and more impact on the game and our reward came when a 3 man break of myself, Abid, and Danny went at Royton, the ball made its way over to me and I cut back inside to curl the ball into the Bottom corner from the edge of the box. That knocked everything out of Royton, and it was all Heys now. And we got our deserved winner with 2 mins to go when sub Lloyd went clear on a though ball and with Royton's keeper in no mans land, the young lad finished calmly. This was huge for us, the attitude and winning ugly come to the fore. I defining moment I believe. With no training Tuesday, I was looking forward to Thursdays session. Geared up for the now standard hill run, I use it as a spur to beat the young kids and give them some banter with it! The boys put a top effort in and did the run at a good pace. It was good to see rick Winstanley at training. Its always special when he turns up. Like I say-when! We had a Joff special 5 a side tournament which my blue team started off like Barca and beat a poor, dejected red team. The standard was good all over but for some reason, and I can only think that the offer must have been substantial I was transferred to the red side who we beat so convincingly! From this point the red team were inspired and looked a different outfit altogether. We won all our games from that point and made the final where we played my former blue team, who I can only say, conned a victory against us! Fix I say! Anyways the session was class It will take both teams into Saturdays games full of confidence. Both sides have good team spirit and it is clearly seen at training. There is no 1st team/reserve team divide. Its a good place to be at the minute. That's what winning breeds!

ALL JUST A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY REPEATING… Formation The origins of Prestwich Heys A.F.C. can be traced back to February 9, 1938 when a meeting was called at the music room of the Heys Road Boys' School at which Elgar Lumsden put forward the idea of forming an old boys' association. Attending that first meeting were messrs Bridge, Stott, Foster, Taplin and Alan Proctor Bell, who was to become a central figure in the club’s history and whose progress he was to report on in the Prestwich Guide under the guise of ‘Touchliner’. Despite the onset of the Second World War a year later, the association flourished under the chairmanship of Bell, who also acted as secretary of the football arm, known as Heys Old Boys' AFC and was acknowledged as one of the region’s best. The club went on to win its first honours in 1943 in the Prestwich and Whitefield League with the Woodward Shield – a success which was repeated for the next three seasons.

The glory years The team gradually progressed through the Bury Amateur League and into the South East Lancashire League claiming championships in 1960, 1961 and 1964. Under the guidance of Peter Gilmore in the 196 0s, Heys won the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1967 followed by the one and only Lancashire Combination Grand Slam in the 1970–71 season with Heys bringing all four trophies available back to Grimshaw's. The club also changed its name in 1964 to Prestwich Heys AFC, an acknowledgement of the fame achieved by the club as they proved one of the nation’s top amateur clubs. Thousands flocked to see Heys play, and beat, the likes of Sutton United, Ferryhill Athletic, Finchley and Highgate United in the FA Amateur Cup with the club's best run taking Heys to the last 8. The victory over Sutton United in 1969 ranks as one of Heys’ most famous moments, attracting nationwide coverage, coming a week before their opponents were due to meet Leeds United in the FA Cup.

Restructuring and a new home These were heady days but with the 1970s came the onslaught of professionalism and the club struggled to maintain its winning ways. After claiming the Manchester Amateur Cup in 1972, the trophy cabinet remained bare as Heys negotiated the gradual restructuring of semi-professional football, moving from the Cheshire County League into the newly formed North West Counties League in 1982. Ground grading problems saw the club drop into the Manchester Football League in 1986 but the club went on to gain its first trophy for over a decade when the First Division title was claimed in 1988. 1991 saw Heys moved by Bury Council off their Grimshaw's home on Heys Road for a new base at Sandgate Road, just over the border in Whitefield.

After relegation in 1996, the club bounced back with the Manchester League double of First Division Championship and Murray Shield built on the back of a record 19 league wins from the start of the season.

Former skipper Lee Connell in action for Heys in 2006

Present day The 2004–05 season saw Heys finally take the major prize of their first Manchester League Premier Division title. They followed this up by retaining their crown the following season with a 2–0 victory in their penultimate game of the season at Hindsford. In 2006–07 Heys made it a hat-trick of Premier Division titles and also lifted the Goldline Trophy after defeating Charnock Richard on penalties at the Reebok Stadium. Tragically, Manager and Chairman Adie Moran died on June 27 2007, whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka at the age of 43. Assistant Manager Jason Dormer took over first team duties until he was replaced by Peter Freakes and Andy Whiteman in February 2008. However, Freakes and Whiteman's spell in charge was to last only nine games with the club citing differences of opinion in the future strategy of the development of the club as the reason for their dismissal. Reserve team management duo of Liam Morrissey and Paul Taylor took over the running of first team affairs during the summer of 2008. Morrissey led the team to a 12th-place finish in the 2008–09 season, some 29 points behind league champions Manchester Gregorians. On 8 October 2009, with Heys sitting third from bottom in the table, it was announced that Morrissey was standing down from his position as first team manager. Morrissey moved to manage the reserve squad and was replaced by former Heys player Mark Slater, who was taking on his first managerial role. Former players Jon Lyons & Karl Kavanagh took charge of 1st team affairs in December 2012 with another former player, Jeff Kavanagh taking charge of the 2nd team Heys continue to work on their redevelopment plans as they look to get their Sandgate Road ground up to a standard that may possibly see a return of North West Counties League football to Prestwich for the first time since 1986. Planning permission for pitch floodlights was granted in November 2007. Working under the Shared Access Agreement to help with costs for floodlight installation Heys' push for a move back into The North West Counties Football League has taken great strides in early 2015. Installation of new changing facilities are taking place to meet league Ground Grading criteria
