GAFFER’S VIEW Heys Online Review caught up with 1st team manager Jon Lyons after Thursday’s training session at Salford Sports Village for his views on the last 7 days “What a huge disappointment last Saturday was. Credit to Walshaw, there’s no suggestion they didn’t deserve their victory because they did. They’re clearly title contenders. But we knew that they were beforehand, yet performed as if we were playing against also rans. Our young side has been punished many times this season for individual mistakes, but you’ve got to expect that you will. It’s a tough school! We’ve had some lows this season and bounced back emphatically and there’s no suggestion that we can’t do the same this week if the attitude, above all else, is right. We have the ability, strength in depth and commitment Tuesday & Thursday’s from a great bunch of hungry lads. But there’s that performance in us that has gone a long way to taking our own title chances out of our hands. We’ve regrouped and worked hard this week and know what is expected of us. We need to return to our good, successful habits and not let ourselves down again. We’ll work together, we’ll work hard and do our best. There’s a lot riding on our success on the pitch each Saturday. If you can make the trip to Springhead please do, Thanks ”

PROGRESS… (With a little help from our friends)

Pouring down, with concrete We are a further 7 days closer to our D-Day of 31st March for ground grading at Adie Moran Park ahead of a possible move in the North West Counties Football League. Last week saw the ‘bolting down’ of the new changing rooms and now many more members of our club are on with fitting them out. We took delivery of tonnes of concrete for our new stand and the framework will be onsite next week.

Season ticket prices will be announced In the coming weeks. Spot in the new Stand? I think so…. We still need your support in any way possible. Contact Paul Hinchy on 07891972038 if you can lend a hand

You’re our friends Prestwich folk, you!!

Inside Heys – Shaun Johnson Last Saturday vs Walshaw was a massive game for us, season defining in many ways. After winning, I think, 10 of our last 12 games and after a massive 0-3 win last week away to the Champions Hindsford our confidence was sky high, but we were shot down. At the start of the game, the first 10-15 minutes we were on top, pressing from the front and not giving Walshaw a breather. We created a couple of chances for Conor & Wooders which we were quickly punished for not taking. 20 minutes in and the hosts stamped their authority on the game. A sloppy goal for us to concede, failing to clear our lines and the ball fell to Dom (Walshaw’s number 8) and he produced a great finish, to be fair. It was soon 2 as their striker peeled off from a throw in & hit a shot from 25 yards that deflected off Wooders, wrong footing Ste. It was always going to be up hill from 2 down but we soon got a lifeline when Connor was brought down by a rash challenge. Powelly obliged and scored the spot kick. Our hopes were soon dashed though as Dom scored Walshaw’s 3rd before half time. A poor 1st half by our standards. Half time gave us the opportunity to regroup and go again. However we never got going and never really troubled Walshaw who were very strong, well organised and 100% deserved their win. They sealed the win with a swift counter attack. All in all a very frustrating day for us and must have been tough viewing for the fans that travelled. The lads are keen to put it right this week despite a tough trip to Springhead awaiting us. We’re all still feeling the result against Walshaw and do not want that feeling again. The lads have trained well Tuesday & Thursday with us performing well in small sided, sharp games. We are all raring to go, ready for Saturday and wanting to put last week out of sight. 5th spot is an aim for the clubs progress but we’re ready to look higher. A massive boost for us all came in the form of Paul Tierney’s return to training on Tuesday , it’s great to see him back and in good spirits despite what he is going through. Come on the Heys!!

Heys hopes hit at Walshaw Joyless afternoon at Sycamore Road Heys promotion hopes were hit as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Bury rivals Walshaw Sports on Saturday afternoon. Although the final score line was harsh on Heys there was no doubting the host’s superiority on the day as they bolstered their title ambitions on the back of a strong first half performance. After the impressive win at Hindsford seven days earlier this was a disappointing display from Heys and the result leaves them with much still to do over their last five games to secure the top five spot they require. Heys started brightly enough with Ashford Blake and Conor Landers causing problems for the home defence but it was Walshaw who struck the first blow of the contest as they took the lead in the 15th minute. Whilst much of what led to the goal was of Heys making, as they twice failed to clear their lines, there was no doubting the quality of the finish as Jordan Hardman picked out Dom Slaven who beat Steve Dryden with an assured finish. After some indifferent results of late the goal gave Walshaw a much needed confidence boost and driven on by the influential Lee Chapman they took a firm grip of the game. With Heys failing to match the energy and tenacity of the home side in the midfield areas they found themselves forced back onto the defensive as Walshaw made all the running. To their credit Heys hung on in and when Phil Woodcock and Conor Landers both had chances it looked like they had weathered the storm. However, in the 40th minute Walshaw increased their lead, albeit fortuitously, when a Brad Howarth shot took a huge deflection past Steve Dryden. Within two minutes though Heys were thrown a lifeline when Landers was upended in the penalty area and George Powell pulled one back as he blasted home from the spot. Back in it and seemingly game on Heys then shot themselves in the foot. Within moments, Walshaw re- established their two goal cushion courtesy of another fine finish from Slaven with Heys marking all at sea. Heys, in need of a good start to the second half, had the ball in the net within five minutes through Ryan McGreevy but the referee spotted a handball in the build-up. The loss of the impressive Landers in the 57th minute served as a further blow to Heys hopes but they continued to enjoy good periods of possession. However, with a two goal cushion the hosts were able to sit in on their lead meaning chances were rare. Walshaw looked to capitalise on the break and as the game entered the closing stages, with Heys committing more men forward, the inevitable happened in the 81st minute. The hosts broke and with Heys short on numbers Lee Bruce had the time and space to pick his spot and confirm victory.

ALL JUST A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY REPEATING…

Formation

The origins of Prestwich Heys A.F.C. can be traced back to February 9, 1938 when a meeting was called at the music room of the Heys Road Boys' School at which Elgar Lumsden put forward the idea of forming an old boys' association. Attending that first meeting were messrs Bridge, Stott, Foster, Taplin and Alan Proctor Bell, who was to become a central figure in the club’s history and whose progress he was to report on in the Prestwich Guide under the guise of ‘Touchliner’. Despite the onset of the Second World War a year later, the association flourished under the chairmanship of Bell, who also acted as secretary of the football arm, known as Heys Old Boys' AFC and was acknowledged as one of the region’s best. The club went on to win its first honours in 1943 in the Prestwich and Whitefield League with the Woodward Shield – a success which was repeated for the next three seasons.

The glory years The team gradually progressed through the Bury Amateur League and into the South East Lancashire League claiming championships in 1960, 1961 and 1964. Under the guidance of Peter Gilmore in the 1960s, Heys won the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1967 followed by the one and only Lancashire Combination Grand Slam in the 1970–71 season with Heys bringing all four trophies available back to Grimshaw's. The club also changed its name in 1964 to Prestwich Heys AFC, an acknowledgement of the fame achieved by the club as they proved one of the nation’s top amateur clubs. Thousands flocked to see Heys play, and beat, the likes of Sutton United, Ferryhill Athletic, Finchley and Highgate United in the FA Amateur Cup with the club's best run taking Heys to the last 8. The victory over Sutton United in 1969 ranks as one of Heys’ most famous moments, attracting nationwide coverage, coming a week before their opponents were due to meet Leeds United in the FA Cup.

Restructuring and a new home These were heady days but with the 1970s came the onslaught of professionalism and the club struggled to maintain its winning ways. After claiming the Manchester Amateur Cup in 1972, the trophy cabinet remained bare as Heys negotiated the gradual restructuring of semi-professional football, moving from the Cheshire County League into the newly formed North West Counties League in 1982. Ground grading problems saw the club drop into the Manchester Football League in 1986 but the club went on to gain its first trophy for over a decade when the First Division title was claimed in 1988. 1991 saw Heys moved by Bury Council off their Grimshaw's home on Heys Road for a new base at Sandgate Road, just over the border in Whitefield.

After relegation in 1996, the club bounced back with the Manchester League double of First Division Championship and Murray Shield built on the back of a record 19 league wins from the start of the season.

Former skipper Lee Connell in action for Heys in 2006

Present day The 2004–05 season saw Heys finally take the major prize of their first Manchester League Premier Division title. They followed this up by retaining their crown the following season with a 2–0 victory in their penultimate game of the season at Hindsford. In 2006–07 Heys made it a hat-trick of Premier Division titles and also lifted the Goldline Trophy after defeating Charnock Richard on penalties at the Reebok Stadium. Tragically, Manager and Chairman Adie Moran died on June 27 2007, whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka at the age of 43. Assistant Manager Jason Dormer took over first team duties until he was replaced by Peter Freakes and Andy Whiteman in February 2008. However, Freakes and Whiteman's spell in charge was to last only nine games with the club citing differences of opinion in the future strategy of the development of the club as the reason for their dismissal. Reserve team management duo of Liam Morrissey and Paul Taylor took over the running of first team affairs during the summer of 2008. Morrissey led the team to a 12th-place finish in the 2008–09 season, some 29 points behind league champions Manchester Gregorians. On 8 October 2009, with Heys sitting third from bottom in the table, it was announced that Morrissey was standing down from his position as first team manager. Morrissey moved to manage the reserve squad and was replaced by former Heys player Mark Slater, who was taking on his first managerial role. Former players Jon Lyons & Karl Kavanagh took charge of 1st team affairs in December 2012 with another former player, Jeff Kavanagh taking charge of the 2nd team Heys continue to work on their redevelopment plans as they look to get their Sandgate Road ground up to a standard that may possibly see a return of North West Counties League football to Prestwich for the first time since 1986. Planning permission for pitch floodlights was granted in November 2007. Working under the Shared Access Agreement to help with costs for floodlight installation Heys' push for a move back into The North West Counties Football League has taken great strides in early 2015. Installation of new changing facilities are taking place to meet league Ground Grading criteria
