Baron Davis Sets Indiegogo Campaign for Basketball Documentary

Former NBA All-Star Baron Davis is turning to crowd-funding for his documentary film “The Drew: No Excuse, Just Produce” through the Indiegogo site. Directed and produced by Davis, the documentary film focuses on the invitation-only summer basketball league that has become the career launch pad for many NBA players including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Paul Pierce, Byron Scott and Davis himself. He has been working on the documentary for more than two years. “My life in The Drew began in eighth grade, and it changed my life,” Davis said. “It’s had the same impact on other players. The Drew is a close-knit community that has grown to become an invitation-only league. This is not just a sports documentary, it’s a story about family, community, perseverance and the life lessons we’ve learned through basketball.” Davis, who last played in the NBA in 2012, has been personally funding the film, along with support from Prettybird and Sunny Field Entertainment. The Drew League Indiegogo Campaign is launching Tuesday through Feb. 19 to raise $100,000 to finish production and raise awareness of this historic basketball league. The premiums offered include attending a Los Angeles Clippers home game with Davis; serving as an assistant coach on Davis’ 2015 Drew League team; and game worn Drew League Jerseys.

The Drew League goal is to help young people form meaningful relationships on the basketball court, relationships that would spill over into the neighborhood, as well as build an institution that would bring top players back to the community. Davis’ producing credits include the Emmy-nominated documentary “Crips and Bloods: Made in America,” an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Festival, and “Sole Man,” an installment of “30 for 30” for ESPN.
