History Edinburgh’s West End is an area of interesting contrasts with diverse architecture including grand Georgian and Victorian terraces, a towering cathedral, an historic railway station, picturesque shopping streets, an international conference centre and some of the quirkiest buildings in the city. The three gothic spires of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral form a distinctive part of Edinburgh’s skyline. Originally built between 1873-1879, it was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott; a prolific architect also responsible for St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial. Haymarket is Edinburgh’s oldest railway station, built in 1842 as the terminus of the Glasgow – Edinburgh railway and little altered over the years. Next to the station at Ryries Bar, thirsty travellers have been able to get a drink since 1868. Nearby is Morrison Street, transformed in the 1990s into the heart of the city’s financial district. The centrepiece is the Edinburgh International Conference Centre with its distinctive drum shape, which was designed by the renowned architect Sir Terry Farrell In contrast William Street is a charming parade of well preserved Georgian shopfronts, still home to a variety of independent shops. Built in 1825, the street has retained its historic character and is regularly used as a location for period films. The West End also has quirky buildings which are worth investigating. Next door to St Mary’s Cathedral is a remarkable surviving building known as Easter Coates. Built in 1615 for a laird named John Byers it was repaired in the 1800s using fragments of buildings from the Old Town and is now home to the cathedral choir school. Meanwhile in Randolph Place, the Tudor House is a half-timbered oddity, set amongst the New Town’s grey sandstone. Designed in 1898 by an enthusiast for the Arts and Crafts movement, it has a medieval turret and mullioned windows and even some Art Nouveau details.
