he national tour of Chicago returns to Tulsa with awardwinning actor and star of stage, television and film, John O’Hurley in the starring role of Billy Flynn at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center for eight performances from Jan. 21-26. With a legendary book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is now the No. 1 longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. hen the United States issued the call to arms in World Wars I and II, American Indians answered as warriors. Some men discovered that words—in their Native languages—would be their most valued weapons. These unsung American heroes share their stories of strength and courage in a Smithsonian traveling exhibition, opening at Northeastern State University’s John Vaughan Library on Jan. 25, 2014.

“Native Words, Native Warriors,” developed by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), tells the remarkable story of soldiers from more than a dozen tribes who used their Native languages while in service in the U.S. military. The U.S. military first enlisted American Indians to relay messages in their Native languages during World War I, even though the United States did not consider American Indians citizens until 1924. These encoded messages proved undecipherable by the enemy and helped the United States achieve victory.

The involvement of the code talkers expanded during World War II. Soldiers from the Comanche, Meskwaki, Sioux, Crow, Hopi and Cree nations, among others, took part in the effort. The best known of these projects is the formerly classified Navajo Code Talker Program, established by the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1942. The encoded messages proved to be a fast, accurate and indecipherable-to-the-enemy alternative, which suited the demands of the battlefield better than the painfully slow military devices that had been standard.

Through oral histories taken from the veterans themselves, “Native Words” celebrates and honors this important but littlereported aspect of American history. In addition to 15 largescale banners, the exhibition includes videos examining the development of the code, battlefield experiences and the sharp turnaround many of them experienced as they transitioned from Indian boarding schools where they were punished for speaking their Native language to using it as their call to duty for their country.

Twenty-three years after the end of World War II, the U.S. government declassified the Navajo and Comanche code talker programs and revealed America’s unsung heroes. In 1999 the U.S. Army presented the last surviving Comanche code talker with a the Knowlton award for outstanding intelligence work, and in 2001 President George W. Bush presented the Congressional Gold Medal to four of the five living veterans of the original 29 Navajo code talkers.

A fairy tale love story comes to life in this lush, romantic Broadway musical for all generations. J AN U AR Y 2 0 1 4
D
isney’s Beauty and the Beast, now embarked on a lavish and visually re-imagined new tour, comes to Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center for a Jan. 31-Feb. 2 run. Its classic story – of a beautiful village girl, Belle, who is first repelled by, then attracted to a gruff yet big-hearted Beast – is indeed, as one of the show’s numbers has it, “a tale as old as time.” The songs (music by Alan Menken; lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice) are almost criminally tuneful. And the musical’s appeal crosses age barriers: truly, Beauty is an experience that can be enjoyed by child and adult alike.
Disney took the cue, and soon started things rolling for the live adaptation. Several new songs, as well as the book by Linda Woolverton, were written for the stage version, which opened on Broadway at the Palace Theater on April 18, 1994, and went on to become the seventh-longest running production in Broadway history. Rob Roth, who directed the Broadway premiere and is back at the helm for the new tour, says that the “story of the show is about seeing past the exterior of a person and into his or her heart.” He says that conveying that feeling is key to any production of Beauty. What’s fresh about the tour, he adds, is not just the timeless moral but a new approach to the visuals. “So few directors have the opportunity to work on a
show several years later in a new form,” Roth says. “I’m lucky that way, and I’m also lucky because I never get bored with ‘Beauty.’” Stan Meyer, the scenic designer both for the 1994 Broadway version and for the new production, says that the former staging was, essentially, the 1991 movie made live. The latter is “a departure from that.” He explains: “We did a lot of research that involved eastern-European wood carving and gilded manuscripts. The new version is an illuminated manuscript come to life.” Audiences will delight in the eye-popping storybook shapes and colors that Meyer and the other original-version designers (Ann Hould-Ward: costumes; Natasha Katz: lighting) have re-imagined. The production’s look, adds Meyer, “is more evocative of whimsy and very, very romantic.”

Many of the songs – the charming “Belle,” the infectious “Something There,” and the spectacular hospitality anthem “Be Our Guest” – were written for the 1991 animated movie, which was the first – and until 2010, the only – animated film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. The movie’s status not just in cinematic history but in critical lore was cemented when the New York Times’ thentheater critic Frank Rich, called Beauty and the Beast the best musical of the year – in any format.

In a nod to the assistance he received coming out of high school, Billy Sims and his BBQ chain are set to provide financial aid for the next generation of athletes.

espite all the accolades that former running back Billy Sims earned as a gridiron great at the University of Oklahoma and in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, he knows that without financial help coming out of high school those lofty dreams may never have been realized.

Sims, who has gone on to entrepreneurial success with his chain of BBQ restaurants following a five-year career in Detroit that was cut short by a knee injury, still values hard work, practice and perseverance. He is also a firm believer in education as a corner stone to a successful career. Which is why Sims, along with his business partner Jeff Jackson, founded the Billy Sims Foundation, in order to assist student athletes with the financial transition from high school to college. “I knew growing up I was going to need a scholarship if I was ever going to go to college,” Sims said. “I have met many young athletes who come from the same background and I wanted to help them make it to college. They have the grades and determination to overcome any obstacle. I just want to do my part and help ease some of the burden on these deserving young men and women.” The Billy Sims Foundation was launched on Dec. 20, 2013, in conjunction with the grand opening of the newest Billy Sims BBQ location at 5225 S. Sheridan in Tulsa. The Billy Sims foundation has set out to provide scholarships to one male
and female Oklahoma student athlete who are looking to continue their education at the collegiate level. Each student will be awarded a scholarship to the school that they plan to attend with two students chosen each year. Secondary beneficiaries to the foundation are to assist not-for-profit and other organizations in the Tulsa area. A panel of committee members, following the end of the school year as students are preparing and deciding to go to college, will identify the lucky recipients. The Brady Arts District is one of the oldest sections of Tulsa. It is rich with cultural icons such as the Cain’s Ballroom and the Ole Lady on Brady. The buildings in the area that are still standing are primarily red brick and have been utilized as warehouses. The Brady District name is derived from Wyatt Tate Brady who arrived in Tulsa in 1890 as a shoe salesman and quickly opened one of the town’s first mercantile stores. Brady was one of the original incorporators of Tulsa and is considered a pioneer, promoter and developer of the area having built Cain’s Ballroom and the first hotel with indoor baths, the Brady Hotel. He was also the first member of the Democratic National Committee after Oklahoma became the fortysixth state in 1907. A new baseball park— ONEOK Field is located on the East edge of the District in the Greenwood District. The Blue Dome District, which has steadily
developed as a new area for nightlife with bars and dance clubs is on the South edge of the Brady and Greenwood Districts. Williams Plaza and Tulsa City Hall are directly South of the District along with the Performing Arts Center and the Jazz Hall of Fame/ Union Depot building. The BOK Arena is a few blocks Southwest of the Brady District on Denver.
LUE DOME B DISTRICT
The Blue Dome District is another center for downtown nightlife, centered at Second St. and Elgin Ave. and expanding into the surrounding blocks. Once a 1920s gas station attracting Route 66 travelers with its art deco blue dome, this gem now sits at the heart of numerous pubs, restaurants, and a vintage bowling alley. Several festivals take place here including the Blue Dome Arts Festival, FreeTulsa Music Festival and St. Patrick’s Day Festival.
CHERRY STREET
Cherry Street is more than its name implies—this colorful seven-block area of 15th Street between Peoria and Utica wears many faces. On Saturday mornings during the growing season, you’ll find striped tents brimming with area growers’ harvest at the Cherry Street Farmer’s Market. ammy and Kevin Swindell will go for the family’s combined 10th Golden Driller in Chili Bowl competition when the 29th annual event kicks off Jan. 14 at the River Spirit Expo Center at Tulsa’s Expo Square. Having combined for 25 Chili Bowl “A” Feature starts, Sammy competed in 1987’s inaugural event, placing sixth and his first Chili Bowl triumph came in 1989.
The reigning four-time champion, Kevin Swindell has appeared in five Chili Bowl “A” Features. The first to win back-to-back titles, Swindell’s drive to victory in 2013 recorded what some have called the greatest laps ever turned at the Chili Bowl. Going blow-for-blow with father Sammy, and racing rival Kyle Larson, a miscue on the part of Larson saw the California driver’s night end on lap 35 to a jubilant standing ovation. The inaugural 1987 event consisted of 52 midgets competing in the two-day event which now consists of four days of qualifiers for the Saturday night A-main event. One third of the drivers compete in each qualifying night’s event, attempting to qualify for the A-main. Each qualifying night has heat races, dash-type events, and a 25 lap feature. Drivers who finish poorly in their heat event in their qualifying night start deep in final night qualifying events and have to finish high in many events to make the A-main field. A driver who started in the lowest “J” event would have to finish high in I, H, G, F, E, D, C, and B events to reach the A-main. The top four finishers in the qualifying night’s feature event plus the top four finishers in the two Saturday night B-main events progress into the 24 car feature field. Three-time Chili Bowl “A” Feature starter, two-time NASCAR Nationwide Champion, and 2013 Sunoco Rookie of the Year in NASCAR Sprint Cup, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. will also figure into the mix. Stenhouse will try his hand at mastering the Chili Bowl clay in the Clauson/CurbAgajanian backed No. 6. The Clauson/Curb-Agajanian name will field four entries with Joey Saldana, Dillon Welch and Payton Pierce all vying for their first “A” Feature start. Owner champion in 2005 with Tracy Hines at the wheel, the formidable Wilke-Pak entries include Jerry Coons, Jr. leading the charge with Chase Stockon and Tyler Cortney
Kahne, Stewart to honor racer Leffler at
Chili Bowl Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart entered the Chili Bowl Nationals in honor of late racer Jason Leffler. Kahne will drive a car entered in combination with Stewart, Leffler’s girlfriend, Julianna Patterson, and former father-in-law, Bob East., in the Jan. 14-18 race at the Tulsa Expo Center in Oklahoma. Plans had been for Leffler and Patterson to co-own the car, and Leffler and East to build it together before Leffler’s death in a June sprint car crash. East continued the project following the accident, and Patterson turned to Stewart for help after the three-time NASCAR champion broke his leg in his own sprint car accident last season. “She told me, I’m going to be a car owner at the Chili Bowl’ and I said, OK?’ kind of quizzically, and it’s just gone on from there,” Stewart told The Associated Press. “Bob is building the car. The owner was going to be Jason and Julianna, and I really wanted to be involved.” So did Kahne, who was close friends with the 37-year-old Leffler, a journeyman NASCAR driver who loved racing so much he entered everything he could. The night he was killed in a sprint car race in New Jersey, the winner was guaranteed just $7,000. Kahne had to first convince his NASCAR team owner, Rick Hendrick, to sign off on his participation in the Chili Bowl. Hendrick hasn’t forbidden Kahne from any extracurricular racing, but hasn’t exactly rubber-stamped Kahne’s opportunities, either. Kahne felt racing in honor of Leffler at the Chili Bowl, with the promise of raffling off the car after for the Charlie Dean Leffler Discretionary Trust to benefit Leffler’s son, would get him the permission from Hendrick. “There’s just a lot of good reasons to get involved,” Kahne told AP. “Jason loved Chili Bowl, he was always so good at Chili Bowl and I enjoy driving on dirt. It was just such a good idea for me do it for Jason.” Tony Stewart Racing is assisting East with the engine and driveline. Stewart’s involvement in the venture makes Kahne eligible to compete in the Jan. 14 Race of Champions. “He’ll get to race more, more track time. I’m excited,” Stewart said. “Kasey and I have owned open wheel teams and competed against each other, but this gives us a chance to work together on something.” The Chili Bowl is one of the most prestigious midget events of the year and has a star-studded lineup. Looking for the success of his father, Billy Boat, who took the Lawson entry to victory in 1997, Chad’s 2013 Chili Bowl ended after contact with another driver on a Lap 7 restart. Bernie Stuebgen, the man behind Indy Race Parts, will field five entries. Among the latest to fill a Stuebgen entry is Kokomo, Ind. shoe, Shane Cottle. Eight starts to “The Throttle” in Saturday’s championship event, Cottle ranks 13th in average “A” Feature finishes with six top 10 finishes, three top five’s, and a pair of podiums coming in 2000 and 2008.

Since 1983, Chimi’s has been serving Tulsa in three locations and in 2007, was purchased by Brandon Fischer. It was a decision that was easy to make since he had been eating at the establishment as a child when his mother would often send him or his siblings out to get some of Chimi’s fresh salsa and chips when not dining in. Knowing it was a favorite of his mother coupled with his own passion for food and entertaining people made it an easy choice when the young entrepreneur was deciding what to do with the rest of his life.
Eleven different enchiladas, three different salsas, homemade churizzo and handmade cholula that is made fresh daily, are just a few things that give Chimi’s its signature dishes. Since Fischer took over, he has added over 40 different menu items to Chimi’s classic lineup and updated some favorites. They hand carve and marinade their fajita meat daily.
