We started our adventure by getting some delicious food at In the Raw on Sheridan. We ordered chicken fried rice and a carnival roll. It was delicious and we will definitely be returning. We had leftovers and when we spotted someone asking for food at an intersection, we gave it to him.

So providing an envelope of cash and telling people to spend it in 48 hours isn’t exactly a challenge, but it makes this assignment sound a lot more interesting. The mission posed to Andrea Morgan and her cousins was to spend $91.80 (we used the local area code for the amount) in two days. And if they could find fun and free activities … bonus. The only catch was that they had to spend it at places, events or shops profiled in the March issue of Preview.

One of my cousins needed some OSU gear to wear during his high school tennis practice, so we headed over to Bedlam Sports. Two sweet Girl Scouts selling cookies greeted us, so we had to get a box of Tagalongs. We ended up buying a white OSU bucket hat. The store had a welcoming atmosphere and just the right amount of every Oklahoma college team. Go Pokes, baby.

With it being such a great (but somewhat chilly) day we opted for some fresh air and headed over to Woodward Park at 21st and Peoria. We hit up the swing set and enjoyed the views as everything is starting to bloom. 8 April 2016

Since we were so close to Brookside, we went down there to see what was happening. In Ida Red — which is very cool — we looked at all the small delectable treats and Oklahoma apparel. We each bought a quirky pair of socks. It put us over our $91.80 budget by about $14, but the socks were too cool to pass up, so we paid the difference.

We figured the best way to end our day was with some ice cream. We saw the Baskin-Robbins ad in the magazine and headed over to 71st and Memorial. We each got a scoop. Delicious.

Throughout his career, John Mellencamp has had to fight, whether it was for the right to record under his own name or for respect as an artist. Of course, he never made it easy on himself. Mellencamp began his career in the late ‘70s as a Bruce Springsteen clone called Johnny Cougar. As his career progressed, his music became more distinctive, developing into a Stonesy blend of hard rock and folk-rock. His musical development coincided with his growth in popularity — by the time “Hurts So Good” and “Jack and Diane” became hits in 1982, Mellencamp had created his own variation of the heartland rock of Springsteen, Tom Petty and Bob Seger. While he had the record sales, it took several years before rock critics took him seriously. For some artists, this would be easy to ignore, but Mellencamp had the desire to be a serious social commentator, chronicling the times and trials of Midwestern baby boomers. Scarecrow, released in 1985, fulfilled his wish of being taken seriously, and his subsequent records were greeted warmly by critics. Furthermore, he sustained his popularity over the ensuing decades, only occasionally experiencing dips in record sales. American Fool (1982) became his breakthrough, both commercially and musically. More focused than his earlier records, American Fool rocketed to number one on the strength of “Hurts So Good” and “Jack and Diane,” both of which were supported by videos that became MTV favorites. The success of American Fool meant that he could add “Mellencamp” to his stage name, and 1983’s Uh-Huh became the first album credited to John Cougar Mellencamp. Uh-Huh was released while American Fool was still high on the charts, and it became a hit generating the hits “Crumblin’ Down,” “Pink Houses” and “Authority Song.” While he had commercial success, Mellencamp made his bid for critical acclaim with his next album, 1985’s Scarecrow. Scarecrow displayed a greater social consciousness and musical eclecticism, resulting in his best-reviewed album to date. Scarecrow generated the “Lonely Ol’ Night,” “Small Town” and “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.”

Zac Brown is a country singer, songwriter and bandleader, one of the brightest stars in a generation of performers set on changing the paradigm of the country music business. With his winning combination of country, bluegrass, reggae and Caribbean music, he appeals to country fans and jam-band hippies, and could well cross over to lovers of world music and pop. He sold over 30,000 copies of the first two self-produced albums he made for his own Southern Ground label, and “Chicken Fried,” the Zac Brown Band’s first single to get national distribution, went platinum with over a million downloads. His first nationally distributed album, The Foundation, sold 300,000 copies within weeks of its release in late 2008. In 2002, he put together the first Zac Brown Band, looking for players with a high level of musicianship who wanted to be equal partners in a band with a communal vibe. They played about 200 gigs their first year, a pace the band has kept up. In 2010, Brown and his band were awarded with the Grammy for Best New Artist. Also in 2010, the live Pass the Jar, recorded at a performance at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, was released. The studio follow-up to The Foundation, You Get What You Give featured new songs that the band honed on the road and appeared later that same year. The record, like its two predecessors, was a hit. The ZBB toured relentlessly in support, playing theaters and festivals. The group’s third major-label studio album, 2012’s Uncaged was conceived and recorded as a whole, not just as a collection of songs. Uncaged performed well, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on its way to earning a platinum certification; it also generated the top 10 country hits “Goodbye in Her Eyes,” “Sweet Annie” and “Jump Right In.” In early 2015, the band dropped the chart-topping single “Homegrown” in anticipation of the full-length Jekyll + Hyde, released in April. It too debuted at the top of the Billboard 200.

The annual Azalea Festival celebrates the blooming of azaleas, tulips, dogwoods and wisteria as these buds begin to unfurl during the warmer temperatures of spring to the delight of visitors. Often considered one of the top spring events in the nation, Muskogee’s Azalea Festival attracts visitors from around the world. Make your way to Honor Heights Park to enjoy a drive along paved roadways that wind around the blooming flowers, walkways perfect for runners or birders, five lakes, a variety of picturesque ponds, a butterfly sanctuary and a tree arboretum. Enjoy the blooms at Honor Heights Park and then head into downtown Muskogee for events that take place throughout the city. The Azalea Festival not only highlights the beauty of nature in spring, but also

plays host to a parade, a variety of food vendors, carriage rides through the blooms and more. The annual Azalea Festival parade features everything from floats, antique cars, clowns and pageant queens, to horseback riders and cyclists. MUMFORD & SONS BOK Center (Tulsa)

Inspired by folk, rock, country and bluegrass, the London-based, platinum-selling Mumford & Sons quickly became a part of London’s underground folk scene, which included acts like Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale. By late 2007, the band was writing songs and playing shows frequently, leading to a gig at 2008’s Glastonbury Festival. That June, their self-titled debut EP arrived, followed by the Love Your Ground EP that December. In May 2009, The Cave and the Open Sea EP was released. That summer, the single “Little Lion Man” became the first taste of their new material. The group was short-listed for the BBC’s Sound of 2009 Poll shortly before the debut album, Sigh No More, was released that winter. It was issued a year later in America and sold over a million copies between the two countries. The group’s second studio album, the much-anticipated Babel, arrived in September 2012. The album would become a commercial hit, topping the Billboard 200 before going platinum in the U.S. and receiving a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Recorded live over two nights at Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the band’s first live film/recording, Road to Red Rocks, followed in late 2012, but after wrapping up their international tour in support of Babel, the group members announced that they would be going on an indefinite hiatus. In early 2015, the band announced both a return to the stage and plans to release a new album. The resulting James Ford-produced Wilder Mind, the group’s third studio longplayer, arrived in early May of that year and debuted at No. 1.

JUSTIN BIEBER BOK Center (Tulsa)

Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber was barely into his teens when he released his 2009 debut, My World, and became one of the youngest success stories in contemporary pop when it went either platinum or double platinum in several countries. For the next few years, successive releases — including remix compilations, acoustic sets, a documentary tie-in, a Christmas album, and even some proper studio recordings — shot forth at a dizzying rate. Bieber developed a massive global following, named Beliebers. During the early 2010s, his recording activity slowed, and he had more of a presence on celebrity gossip websites than on sales charts, but he rebounded during the middle of that decade. A native of Stratford, Ontario, Bieber placed second in a local 2007 singing competition and began posting his performances on YouTube. The videos caught the attention of Scooter Braun, a talent agent and former So So Def marketing executive, who helped Bieber land an impromptu audition with the R&B star Usher. Impressed by what he saw, Usher signed the 15-year-old Bieber to a recording contract. Bieber released his first single, “One Time,” in May 2009. Supported by a popular video that featured an appearance by Usher, “One Time” went platinum in both Canada and America, a feat that was replicated later that year with the release of My World. The disc was technically an EP, featuring only seven songs, but it reached number six on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold over a million copies. Less than a year after his debut, Bieber returned with the “second half” of My World, a 10-song release titled My World 2.0. Further demonstrating his and his management’s marketing power, over 8,000 fans who pre-ordered My World 2.0 had their head shots used in a photo mosaic (formed to look like a portrait of Bieber) that was displayed on the back side of the disc’s booklet. In 2012, Bieber returned with the proper follow-up to My World 2.0, titled Believe. With a sound based in dance and R&B, it featured production from Darkchild, Diplo and Max Martin. Believe became his fourth No. 1 album, paced by “Boyfriend,” “As Long as You Love Me” (featuring Big Sean) and “Beauty and a Beat” (featuring Nicki Minaj). Late in 2013, Bieber released the first in a weekly series of singles. Nearly all of them charted, led by Top 40 showings for “All Around the World” (featuring Ludacris) and “Heartbreaker.” Those songs, as well as others, were compiled for release as Journals, a digital download-only album that wasn’t submitted for sales tracking, so it did not appear on the Billboard 200. In 2015, a remix of “Where Are You Now” appeared on Diplo and Skrillex Present Jack Ü and reached the top 10 of the Hot 100. Later in the year, “What Do You Mean?,” a track that skillfully latched onto the tropical house subgenre — popularized by the Felix Jaehn remix of OMI’s “Cheerleader” — topped that chart. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tori Kelly was a would-be child star who grew into a woman who learned how to follow her own muse and bring her music to her fans through the Internet. Born into a musical household, Kelly grew up listening to gospel and was influenced by pop and R&B acts such as Jeff Buckley, Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott. Kelly developed ambitions to be a professional musician at an early age, and when she was 10, she appeared on the TV talent competition Star Search. In 2004, she was a contestant on America’s Most Talented Kids, winning in her first appearance and moving on to the championship tournament. Her appearance on America’s Most Talented Kids led to a deal with Geffen Records, but she and the label parted ways before she could release any material. After auditioning for American Idol but failing to make the final 24, Kelly embraced a new approach; she had been learning to play guitar, and she started working on original songs and recording them on her personal computer. Kelly began posting videos of her performances on YouTube, and through word of mouth she developed a significant following; in time, her page had close to 700,000 subscribers and her cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You” was viewed 17 million times. Kelly proved there were paying customers in her new fan base when she digitally released an album, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly, which she recorded herself and featured her playing most of the instruments; the album sold well enough to hit number nine on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and number six on Soundscan’s New Artist tally.

Known as “the Voice,” Sandi Patty is one of the biggest stars in CCM and over a 15-year period (from the early ‘80s) has earned three platinum albums, five gold albums, 33 Dove Awards and five Grammys. Her debut album sold 11 million copies. Known for her versatility, Patty draws from pop to ballads to modernized gospel standards. As a singer, she is noted for her powerful, flexible voice and her ability to effortlessly climb to a high C. Patty has appeared on numerous television and awards shows and has even performed for presidents.

Kelly followed the success of Handmade Songs with a series of live dates, headlining clubs and theaters and opening at larger venues for Jewel and Ed Sheeran. Scooter Braun, who helped guide Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen to stardom, became Kelly’s manager, and she scored a contract with Capitol Records, which released her EP Foreword in the fall of 2013. In 2015, Kelly released her debut full-length album, Unbreakable Smile, which featured production from Max Martin (Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Ellie Goulding) and included the singles “Nobody Love” and “Should’ve Been Us.”

Born in Oklahoma City, she made her performing debut singing “Jesus Loves Me” at church when she was only 2. In 1979, she signed to an independent label and that year released Sandi’s Song. She then began a series of musical ministry tours and realized she had found her calling. She won her first two Dove Awards in 1982 for Lift Up the Lord, and it was straight up from there. She launched her first major U.S. tour in 1984 to promote her Songs from the Heart album. At the height of her career, Patty was an inspiration and role model of a good Christian wife for millions. But, by June 1992, a few cracks had begun to appear. That year she filed for divorce without stating any clear reason why. By 1995, she admitted to having had two affairs. Her problems generated much controversy in the CCM business and many radio stations pulled her material. Despite these setbacks, Patty continued her career and expanded her musical repertoire, winning new fans and winning back the old. She remarried and put out several new recordings, including two Christmas albums (O Holy Night and It’s Christmas), An American Songbook, Artist of My Soul, the Dove Award-winning Spanish-language album Libertad Me Das, Together with Kathy Troccoli and These Days. power ballad “Everything I Do (I Do It for You),” but never quite dominating the public imagination (or earning critical respect) like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. Nevertheless, Adams remained a formidable presence on the American charts into the mid-’90s, and while the popularity of his new records started to slip after that, he retained his audience in Canada and the U.K. and his ‘80s hits remained radio staples. Things started to break wide open for Adams in 1983 thanks to Cuts Like a Knife, an album that had a big, powerful album rock sound and the pop hooks that would later turn him into a star. The former could be heard on the singles “Cuts Like a Knife” and “This Time,” while the latter was in bloom on the ballad “Straight from the Heart,” the song that became Adams’ first American Top 10 hit. It all paved the way for Reckless, the 1984 album that turned Adams into a superstar. Reckless had the right songs — particularly the brooding minor-key “Run to You,” the skyscraping power ballad “Heaven” and the nostalgic heartland rocker “Summer of ‘69,” but also the Tina Turner duet “It’s Only Love,” “Somebody” and “One Night Love Affair,” all released as singles, meaning that over half the album was released as singles in true Thriller fashion — at the right time, all given videos that earned heavy rotation on MTV. Adams succeeded Reckless in 1987 with Into the Fire, a bigger streamlined record that ironically didn’t produce a huge hit; “Heat of the Night” and “Hearts on Fire” reached the Top 10, but they didn’t cut into public consciousness the way the singles from its predecessor did, and the album plateaued at platinum.

Bryan Adams negotiated the shifting tides of the ‘80s so well that it never seemed like he was changing his music to fit the times. A veteran of the ‘70s studio arena rock game, Adams struck out on his own in the early ‘80s, turning into a star in his native Canada and making headway with his 1983 album, Cuts Like a Knife. All of this was a prelude to Reckless, the 1984 album that turned him into an international superstar, selling by the truckloads in North America, Europe, and Asia thanks to the hits “Run to You,” “Heaven” and “Summer of ‘69.” From that point on, Adams was the most unassuming of rock stars, riding high on the charts and selling out arenas, even breaking Billboard records with his

In the wake of this lukewarm reception, Adams teamed with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who had recently helmed Def Leppard’s 1987 blockbuster Hysteria, for his next album, Waking Up the Neighbours. In spite of its rabblerousing title, Waking Up the Neighbours wasn’t a big rock ‘n’ roll album, something its smash hit “Everything I Do (I Do It for You)” made plain. In the wake of that song’s remarkable success, Waking Up the Neighbours appeared in September 1991, soon turning into Adams’ second-biggest hit album, spawning the Top 10 hit “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started” in addition to three other singles, “There Will Never Be Another Tonight,” “Do I Have to Say the Words” and “Thought I’d Died and Gone to Heaven.”

Finding an outlet in being the center of attention, Schumer was voted class clown during her senior year of high school in 1999. In the mid-2000s, Schumer began testing the waters as a stand-up comic, steadily working her way up the comedy club chain at venues such as New York’s Comedy Cellar. Her first national exposure came in 2007, when she placed fourth on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. In 2011, she released her debut stand-up album, Cutting, and gained more recognition after killing it on the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen. A year later, Comedy Central gave her the platform for her first comedy special, Mostly Sex Stuff. The cable network then turned the keys over to her for a comedy show, Inside Amy Schumer, in 2013. The much talked about series won its first Emmy in 2015 for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. Schumer’s comedy is cutting and revealing, touching on sex, relationships and gender inequality in a way that few comics have dared to try. Along with other 18 April 2016

actresses like Kristen Wiig, she’s helped shed the Hollywood bias that female comics are best suited for character roles. She demonstrated her ability to carry a film with her 2015 summer hit, Trainwreck, a semi-biographical portrait that co-starred Bill Hader and was directed by Judd Apatow.

HALESTORM AND LITA FORD Brady Theater (Tulsa)

Siblings Elizabeth and Arejay Hale, the core members of the hard rock band Halestorm, began the group in late 1997 near York, Pennsylvania, with Arejay on drums and Elizabeth on vocals and keyboard. They finally made their full-length studio debut in 2009 with the eponymous Halestorm, all the while maintaining a rigorous touring schedule that would see them playing upwards of 250 shows a year. The following year, Halestorm released the concert recording Live in Philly 2010, and Reanimate: The Covers EP appeared in 2011, featuring the band’s takes on songs by Heart, Guns N’ Roses and Lady Gaga. Their sophomore album, The Strange Case Of..., followed in 2012, and the single “Love Bites (So Do I)” earned the group a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. Reanimate 2.0 was released in 2013, this time finding the band tackling Fleetwood Mac, Daft Punk and Marilyn Manson. The band’s eclectic third studio long-player, Into the Wild Life, was released in April 2015, and was preceded by the single “Apocalyptic.” One of two solo stars to spring from the ashes of the ‘70s all-girl hard rock band the Runaways, Lita Ford has long been a more frustrating, contradictory proposition for critics than former colleague Joan Jett. Ford is subtly feminist in her musical approach, displaying guitar heroics on the level of any male metal hero; the mere fact of her existence in the otherwise testosterone-driven heavy metal genre has made her a hero to some, but her persona has often been criticized as calculated to appeal to male adolescent sexual fantasies, simply embodying the standard wild-girl stereotypes of many male metal artists’ lyrics. When she has the material to back her up though, Ford is inarguably capable of rocking out aggressively and assertively. Ford began playing the guitar at age 11; just five years later, she joined the Kim Fowley-produced Runaways, an all-female project designed to mix the aggression of simple, punky hard rock with teenage bad-girl sex appeal. When the band dissolved, Ford took voice lessons and embarked on a solo career, supporting herself through a variety of jobs. She released her debut album, Out for Blood, in 1983; it was followed the next year by Dancin’ on the Edge. Nothing was heard from Ford for the next four years. By the time Ford returned, the lighter pop-metal she had long favored had broken through to mainstream audiences, which set the stage for her most successful album, 1988’s Lita. The album featured Ford’s first hit, “Kiss Me Deadly;” its follow-up, a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, “Close My Eyes Forever,” provided both artists with their first top 10 single.

In terms of record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers. That success hasn’t necessarily translated to respect (or even ironic hipster appreciation) in most quarters; instead, Manilow’s music has been much maligned by critics and listeners alike, particularly the romantic ballads that defined his career, which were derided as maudlin schlock even during his heyday. It’s true that Manilow’s taste for swelling choruses and lush arrangements often bordered on bombastic, but unlike many of his MOR peers, Manilow wasn’t aiming to make smooth, restrained background music: he conceived of himself as a pop entertainer and all-around showman in the classic mold, and his performances and stage shows were accordingly theatrical. Manilow dominated pop music during the latter half of the ‘70s like few other performers, spinning off a long series of hit singles (including 13 No. 1 hits on the adult contemporary charts) and platinum albums that essentially made the Arista label. When the well began to run dry in the early ‘80s, he branched out into other genres. No longer a superstar expected to deliver blockbuster hits, Manilow was free to explore his long-held taste for swing, pop standards and Broadway show tunes, which dominated his albums from the mid-’80s on. He continued to record steadily during the following decades and his popularity never completely eroded, as evidenced by the number three chart debut of his 2002 greatest-hits package, Ultimate Manilow, and the No. 1 peak of his 2006 covers album, Greatest Songs of the Fifties. While one might imagine Maynard James Keenan would have enough going on to keep him busy as a frontman with the groups Tool and A Perfect Circle, in 2007 he decided to record an album under yet another name with Puscifer. Described by Keenan as “the space where my Id, ego and anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes,” Puscifer first appeared as the name of a fictional band Keenan fronted in a cameo on the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show in 1995.

By the late ‘80s, hip-hop was on its way to becoming a male-dominated art form, which is what made the emergence of Salt-n-Pepa so significant. As the first all-female rap crew (even their DJs were women) of importance, the group broke down a number of doors for women in hip-hop. They were also one of the first rap artists to cross over into the pop mainstream, laying the groundwork for the music’s widespread acceptance in the early ‘90s.

It wasn’t until 2003 that Keenan actually recorded under the name, when he teamed up with Danny Lohner for a track called “Rev 22:20” for the Underworld soundtrack, and it wasn’t until four years later that he set to work on an entire Puscifer album. Organized less as a traditional “rock band” and more as a musical collective in which Keenan could work with a rotating lineup of likeminded artists, Puscifer’s early recording projects featured a large cast of noted musicians, including Tim Alexander from Primus, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk from Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine, former King Crimson member Trey Gunn, violinist Lisa Germano, pop singer/songwriter Jonny Polonsky, and actress and vocalist Milla Jovovich.

Salt-n-Pepa were more pop-oriented than many of their contemporaries, since their songs were primarily party and love anthems, driven by big beats and interlaced with vaguely pro-feminist lyrics that seemed more powerful when delivered by the charismatic and sexy trio. While songs like “Push It” and “Shake Your Thang” made the group appear to be a one-hit pop group during the late ‘80s, Salt-n-Pepa defied expectations and became one of the few hip-hop artists to develop a long-term career. Along with LL Cool J, the trio had major hits in both the ‘80s and ‘90s, and if anything, they hit the height of their popularity in 1994, when “Shoop” and “Whatta Man” drove their third album, Very Necessary, into the top 10.

Singer Judy Collins was, along with Joan Baez, one of the two major interpretive singers to emerge from the folk revival of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. Like Baez, she began singing traditional folk songs, then moved on to popularize the work of contemporary singer-songwriters, even writing her own songs occasionally. Unlike Baez, she used her classical music training to evolve into being a singer of art songs and show tunes, sometimes employing semi-classical arrangements. In a career that began at the end of the 1950s and was still going strong more than 50 years later, she consistently performed 50-80 concerts a year, and she recorded extensively, her commercial success reaching its apex from the late ‘60s to the mid-’70s as six of her albums from the period achieved gold or platinum sales. Although she was primarily an albums artist, she also enjoyed a few hit singles, notably her top 10, Grammy-winning cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now,” which helped establish Mitchell as a songwriter; a cappella version of the hymn “Amazing Grace;” and the show tune “Send in the Clowns,” which led to a Song of the Year Grammy for its composer, Stephen Sondheim. 20 April 2016

CARRIE UNDERWOOD BOK Center (Tulsa) It’s true that Carrie Underwood sprang to fame as an American Idol winner, but her career needs to be defined in the context of country superstars instead of realityshow contestants. Her millions of records sold, her dozens of awards, her many record-breaking feats on the charts, and her status as one of the most powerful people in the music business all testify to her staying power beyond American Idol. Underwood grew up in the small town of Checotah, Oklahoma, and began singing with her church at the tender age of 3. She performed throughout her childhood, eventually moving on to festival gigs in several states. Along with developing her singing, Underwood learned to play guitar and piano. She graduated from high school as her class salutatorian and majored in mass communication at Northeastern State College with an eye on a career in broadcast journalism, but continued her singing career throughout her studies. As a senior just a few credits short of her degree, Underwood heard about the auditions for the 2005 season of American Idol. She tried out for the show at the St. Louis auditions, and her innocent charm and pure, pretty voice ended up winning her not only a place among the 12 finalists, but the title of 2005’s American Idol. Her debut single, “Inside Your Heaven,” was released that summer and she finished recording her debut album after completing the American Idols Live! tour. Some Hearts was released later that fall and became a smash hit, selling over 300,000 copies in its first week and eventually going platinum a whopping seven times. The album’s lead single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” was also a big success, topping Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart for six weeks. Underwood released her sophomore effort Carnival Ride in October 2007. Four of the album’s tracks hit the top of the country charts, pushing the album to multi-million sales and earning her two additional Grammy Awards. Two years after the album’s release, Underwood released her third studio effort, Play On, which found her devoting more focus than ever to her songwriting abilities. She co-wrote seven of the album’s tracks, including the leadoff single “Cowboy Casanova.” Underwood’s fourth studio album, Blown Away, released in the spring of 2012, was produced by her longtime collaborator Mark Bright and driven by its hit lead single, “Good Girl,” it showed her continued growth from American Idol to savvy country-pop star. Underwood undertook her first big starring role in 2013, when she signed on to play Maria in a live televised production of The Sound of Music on NBC. Airing on December 5, 2013, the broadcast was accompanied by a studio soundtrack. The year 2014 was relatively quiet for her, although in September she released the single “Something in the Water,” and three months later the compilation Greatest Hits: Decade #1. A heavily spiritual single with the theme of baptism, “Something in the Water,” topped the country and Christian charts and also reached the pop Top 40. Early in 2015, it earned her a Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance. Exquisitely choreographed exhibitions provide a hard-hitting transportation to a time where tests of strength and tomato justice ruled the land. You’ll also learn the proper manner of raising your tankard, shouting “Huzzah!” and pounding your palms against a table to show your appreciation for the festivities. Stroll down twisting, tree-covered village lanes filled with over 130 quaint shops displaying one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted goods. It’s always market day inside the castle walls. You can sample modern-day recreations of ancient crafts, jewelry, leatherworks, longbows, stage-combat-approved swords, bamboo flutes, tapestries, ironworks, perfumes and pottery. The day is long, and you’ll eventually get hungry. Don’t sweat it — well, this all happens in May, so you’ll probably sweat a little — there’s plenty of places to eat and drink. Many merchants stand post selling everything from massive, juicy turkey legs to ice cream. Oh, and then there’s the eight pubs serving everything from water, to soda, to … well … more adult beverages. You’ll definitely be in for a treat if you visit the wine and mead tasting on the south side of Circle Square.

Take the garden to your home this spring and summer with weekly visits to Green Country’s many, bountiful farmers markets. WRITTEN BY: Michele Chiappetta

icture rows upon rows of bright red tomatoes, deep green cucumbers, thick leaves of romaine lettuce, fresh-picked mushrooms, juicy peaches, crisp berries, all of it homegrown, local and bursting with taste that makes your mouth water for a bite. This scene is happening all around Green Country every weekend at the area’s many bountiful farmers markets. If you haven’t been to T-Town’s farmers markets before, now is a good time to start. April is the month that most farmers markets open in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Jenks and other areas around Green Country. They typically run until October, though Brookside and Cherry Street markets run every other week throughout winter as well. There are many benefits to shopping at the area’s farmers markets. The produce is as fresh as possible, the taste more flavorful than what is typically available

in a grocery store. Plus, as Kris Hutto, market administrator for Tulsa Farmers Market, points out, shopping at the area’s farmers markets helps support local farmers and ranchers, which strengthens the local economy. “We want to support the farmers making an income, a livable wage,” says Hutto. “And we want to support our community by eating healthy and locally to reduce our carbon footprint and to enrich our community and our environment.” To meet that goal, Tulsa Farmers Market runs the well-known Cherry Street Farmers Market, as well as the market on Brookside. In its 18th year and going strong, Cherry Street has expanded to become the largest farmers market in Oklahoma. “We’re going to have around 75 vendors this year participating in our Cherry Street Market,” says Hutto. Those vendors are chosen with care, she explains. “Everything at the market is 100 percent grown in Oklahoma.”

Tulsa Farmers Market brings in a wide variety of choices for shoppers. This year, that includes getting a local mushroom farmer into the Cherry Street market for the first time in years. Mushrooms are a favorites of shoppers, Hutto explains, along with fresh corn, farm-fresh eggs, peaches, apples, berries and melons. “Those things scream summer and barbecue, and we can’t keep up with the demand for those.” During a typical Saturday morning, the Cherry Street Farmers Market gets as many as 3,000 shoppers perusing the stalls and buying tasty treats. The market is held directly on the street, which is blocked off to traffic during the market’s hours. Even when road construction begins sometime later this year, shoppers don’t need to worry. The market has a “Plan B” to move into the Christ the King parking lot on Cherry Street, near where they usually operate. Shopping at a farmers market is not only a great way to get fresh

Your produce from local farmers; it’s also an adventure in new foods. In addition to the usual garden suspects — tomatoes, corn, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers — you’ll see unusual vegetable choices, too. Think green kohlrabi, colorful Japanese eggplant, radishes, chard and tomatillos, for example. You don’t have to be afraid of buying and cooking them; just look up some recipes online that explain their delicious uses. But Tulsa Farmers Market plans to make it even easier for you. “We plan on having recipe cards available on how to utilize these healthy foods,” says Hutto. Learning how to eat healthy is part of the fun of shopping at the area’s farmers markets. And Tulsa Farmers Market is dedicated to helping Tulsans learn more about healthy food habits. “We have, in the past, had some tours, which we hope to continue this year,” says Hutto. “Educare takes families who are participating in their program and they give tours to show them what different foods are and how to prepare them. We’re hoping to have a healthy eating specialist or a nutritionist at the market this year too.”

The connection to food extends even to helping those less fortunate in the local community. Tulsa Farmers Market accepts SNAP cards and works with the Double Up Food Bucks program, which matches dollars up to $20 per visit so that SNAP customers can get twice as much fruits and vegetables for the price. Special events coming up through the Tulsa Farmers Market also include a fundraising Farm to Table Dinner in October, as well as a small tasting event in June, both still in the planning stages. Ultimately, a visit to the farmers market on a weekend morning is a lot of fun for the whole family. “We’re going to have music (at the Cherry Street market),” says Hutto. “We’re going to have food trucks. And we’re going to have beautiful, bountiful produce available all year round. It is going to be the most exciting thing you can do on a Saturday morning.”

Downtown Tulsa is filled with spooky spots sure to give you chills even in the middle of summer. And a ghost tour with Teri French-White can point them out in all their goose bump inducing detail. WRITTEN BY: Tiffany Duncan

lamour, fortune, fame. Suspicion, jealousy, murder. Tulsa’s oldest history overflows with glamorous and hairraising tales from the oil boom era of the early 20th century. It was a time of fabulous wealth, bitter racism, brothels, speakeasies and fabulous all-night parties. Men were driven by their insatiable desire for oil, stopping at nothing to be the one to land the next big strike. Greed and hatred turned to murder and lynchings, and the bloodlust of the time ultimately caused the worst race riot in American history in the spring of 1921. Some say that because so much oil was leached from the ground that a kind of evil was released upon the land, consuming and destroying those who spilled the earth’s blood out of selfishness and greed. Some also believe unsettled spirits still linger around the scenes of crimes long forgotten, especially in the Brady District where much of the violence and lecherous activity took place.

Teri French-White is one such believer, and she has had many personal encounters with the paranormal in Tulsa. With an extensive background in professional paranormal research and metaphysics, French-White has appeared on both local and national television programs like Discover Oklahoma, Women’s Entertainment and The Travel Channel. She has studied Tulsa’s history in depth for over a decade and combed through all of the courthouse land records to dig up anything that might have been forgotten. Through all of her research, FrenchWhite has been able to establish herself as an authority on local folklore and legends. For 13 years she has operated Tulsa Spirit Tours, her own business that offers a variety of tours to those brave enough to plumb the raw depths of the city’s history with her. “I started doing tours in 2003, right around Halloween,” French-White says. “My phone rang incessantly after that, and now I do tours full time.” Hands down, one of her most popular tours is the Haunted Pub Crawl. This tour includes three wellknown Tulsa bars — The Hunt Club, The Yeti and Caz’s Pub. At each stop, guests may purchase a beverage or two of their choice while listening to the ghost stories and lore

of each building. FrenchWhite also keeps the group on watch for any sign of the paranormal. “The Hunt Club used to be the Regal Hotel and Bar,” she says. “A very prominent Tulsa judge named John Devereaux was murdered there under very mysterious circumstances in 1921. He was found heavily drugged with a huge gash over his eye.” The building has also been a very exclusive nightclub called The Tavern, and for a short time was The Playboy Candy Shop (you can read between the lines on that one). Much of the staff at The Hunt Club has reported weird happenings, like unexplained noises and flickering lights. And in a building with so much twisted history embedded in its walls, who could confidently say that ghosts are not at fault? Both The Yeti and Caz’s Pub buildings used to house brothels upstairs, and the presence of women that once lived and worked in them can supposedly still be felt. “During one of my tours at The Yeti, two women, both on opposite sides of the room, simultaneously felt someone pulling their hair. The two women did not know each other, so they hadn’t planned it as a prank or something,” French-White says. “Some of the staff have also heard female voices singing from upstairs, even though there was

no one up there.” (If you go on the tour, make sure you ask about the Dress in the Window story while at The Yeti.) Visits to Caz’s Pub have been just as eventful, if not more. There’s a stoplight mounted to the ceiling there as decoration, but during one of the tours the red light started flashing uncontrollably. A female tour participant reported also hearing someone whistling in the bathroom while she was the only person in there, and the tenants who live upstairs have had weird things happen to them as well. Plumbers in the building have also had lights shut off on them unexpectedly. Haunted? You decide. “One of my other tours includes El Guapo’s Cantina, which used to be a brothel called the May Rooms, and another includes Cain’s Ballroom. If Cain’s is empty at the time of the tour, the group is allowed to go inside,” she says. If you’ve never heard any of the ghost stories associated with Cain’s Ballroom, prepare for a chilling history lesson. In fact, it lasts the entire month and all the events are expected to bring in over 200,000 visitors from all over the world. Since 1968, it’s become unquestionably one of our nation’s premiere spring showcases. And deservedly so. That old saying, “April showers bring May flowers,” will eventually need to be changed to something like, “Why wait till May, when you can see it now in Muskogee.” And you’re going to want to bring your camera. The more than 30,000 azalea plants, azalea plants - in an astonishing 625 varieties - of Muskogee’s 120-acre Honor Heights Park are utterly and completely stunning. Take all the pictures you can, but don’t fail to see these gorgeous flowers with your own eyes, too. Waterfalls, more than a few lakes, gorgeous ponds along picturesque walkways and manicured pathways for walkers, bird watchers and joggers make the Azalea Festival such an awesome experience that pictures do not do it justice. You can walk, run or drive through the park, but if you really want to add an extra level of excitement, romantic carriage rides through the fantastic flora and fauna of gorgeous Honor Heights Park are available. And at the very top of the park, you can catch a view of Muskogee that seems to go on forever, making the visit worth it for that reason alone. For children, besides running and jumping around in one of the 40 gardens or playing on the new playgrounds, there is something special this year called Papilion’s Spring Bloom, a free introduction to the expanded butterfly teaching garden which opens the first weekend in April. Another event during the festival that is cool for children, Touch-A-Truck, allows children of all ages to get their hands on trucks and tractors and

National Submarine Day (April 11) will also be a highlight for children and adults alike because the USS Batfish, the famous submarinekilling submarine, is dry docked at the Muskogee War Memorial Park and is available for everyone to tour and explore. Children (and adults) can pretend to guide the vessel by pushing all the buttons and pulling the levers and gears on the inside. Throughout its almost 50-year history, the Azalea Festival has continually expanded to include some surprisingly exciting, oncein-a-lifetime events. This year, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund traveling wall, The Wall That Heals, will be at the Muskogee War Memorial Park April 7–10. The half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., at approximately 250 feet long, honors the memories of more than 58,000 veterans, making this year’s festival a very special one. Open 24 hours a day during its stay, the exhibit is free to the public.

The festival also welcomes a memorial for the Oklahoma City bombing, hosted at the Muskogee War Memorial Park. As We See It: The Murrah Memorial Fence Exhibition is a tribute of sorrow and pride for the bombing’s 168 victims, their families, and the survivors and rescue workers involved that day. Pictures and mementos originally attached to a chain link fence that surrounded the bomb site are displayed as a wall-hanging exhibit called The Fence. Panels of text throughout the exhibit record a history of responses of those who took the pictures of the horrific event. During regular museum hours, regular admission prices apply for this exhibit. The 50th anniversary of The Five Civilized Tribes Museum will be celebrated April 16, in conjunction

with the Azalea Festival, during the Art Under the Oaks, a family event which includes a competitive art show including 58 various area artists, all dedicated to preserving the culture and history of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole. Browse or buy Native American art and support the local artists as they show their amazing work. The Azalea Festival also boasts the Azalea Ball, the 32nd annual Azalea Festival Pageant and the Azalea Festival Parade (April 9) with floats, clowns, classic cars, horses and cyclists. From April 8–16 at the Muskogee Little Theatre, you can relive the classics of country music legend Patsy Cline through a production entitled, Always, Patsy Cline. The musical play, starring Elizabeth Escobar as Patsy, is a tribute to the singer who tragically died in a plane crash in 1963. With 27 songs, the musical is based on a meeting between an adoring fan (Louise, played by Lu Murphy) and the musical star. Prices for tickets are $5 to $15. On April 20, the Muskogee Azalea Festival hosts the Flower Power Bike Ride. Choose a route ranging from 15 to 100 miles with the beginning and ending at Three Forks Harbor. All proceeds from the ride go to the festival, Honor Heights Park, and a continued effort to develop bike and walking trails around the Muskogee area. And don’t miss the Muskogee Azalea Festival Annual Chili & BBQ Cook-off (April 9), plenty of other food vendors, the 30th annual Quilt Show (April 8–9), the Cruizaders Car Club ninth annual car, truck and cycle show (April 9), and loads of other live entertainment. In the second year of their Los Angeles Dodgers affiliation, will the Drillers cap a 40-year anniversary with a Texas League title behind new skipper Ryan Garko?

very year around this time, the smells and sounds of the outdoors start to change and begin to beckon those from ages 2 to 92. It’s the smell of roasting hot dogs and the sounds of children playing in neighborhoods. And, if you’re lucky enough to be near the address of 201 N. Elgin in Tulsa, it’s that noise that rings joy in the hearts of every red-blooded American — the crack of the wooden bat against the crisp horsehide of baseballs and then the echo of the sound as it bounces back off outfield walls. Although the Tulsa Drillers begin their 2016 season with six games on the road, fans will eagerly await their return home to ONEOK Field

April 14 to get their first glimpse at who will be stepping into the chalky batter boxes in Tulsa before possibly turning into the next Major League Baseball star. It’s happened plenty of times in Tulsa, with Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado being the most recent. He slugged 42 home runs with 130 RBI for Colorado last year. It wasn’t that long ago he was wearing the colors of the Drillers. Many more have listed Tulsa as home before making history in the big leagues — Sammy Sosa, Troy Tulowitzki, Pudge Rodriguez, Matt Holliday, Dave Righetti, Ron Darling, Ruben Sierra, Kevin Brown, Juan Gonzalez, Rusty Greer and Mark Teixeira to name a few. They all spent time in Tulsa at one time or another And there have been MLB Hall of Famers who have either played or coached in Tulsa, including Frank Robinson, Warren Spahn, Satchel Paige, Steve Carlton and Dizzy Dean.

Let's Play Ball! Now come the newbies and the future of the Los Angeles Dodgers. It will be the second year the Drillers have been affiliated with one of the most storied franchises in the game. And Drillers general manager Mike Melega, who was named Texas League Executive of the Year in 2012, couldn’t be more excited to spend the Drillers 40th anniversary in Tulsa as a second year Dodgers Double-A farm club affiliate. “The Dodgers system is loaded,” Melega says, “A lot of publications have them as the top-ranked farm system. That obviously has us thrilled, and it should be exciting for Drillers fans.” Since it is the magical 40th anniversary (the Drillers played their inaugural year in Tulsa in 1977), there are big plans in the future for fans. “We finalized an Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez Night for June 23 to retire his number,” says Melega. “That’s going to be huge. It’s our 40th year and that’s a big deal for us. We’re going to be doing eight to 10 different jersey nights; I believe almost every Thursday night. We will span the entire history of the Drillers with the jerseys. We will have a 40th anniversary patch that will be involved. The jerseys also might be themed like a Star Wars Night or an Earth Day, but they will include the logos from all those Drillers teams. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will get one on those giveaway nights.” Other promotions on the schedule include family Sunday nights with children 12 and under eating for free (they get a hot dog, a fruit and a milk with their voucher and will participate in giveaways of mini-bats, caps and/or T-shirts); bobblehead nights; and 19 rock-your-socks-off firework shows. And although the Drillers have served up some great concession goodies over the years, they are adding and changing some menus for 2016. At the ice cream stand in the outfield, they are adding snow cones and whips to their ice cream

and frozen yogurt cart. They are adding salads and wraps for the health conscious fan, and will have a novelty item at the sausage cart — a nearly 1 pound sausage called The Wrecker. On the field, it appears they will be adding more meat to the menu as well, as Melega says three very exciting possibilities may be heading for Tulsa, including home run blasting first baseman Cody Bellinger and fearless hitters in the outfield, Alex Verdugo and Jacob Scavuzzo. Bellinger hit 30 dingers for the Dodgers Class A-Advanced club last year in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Verdugo has a .322 career batting average in the minors, and Scavuzzo hit 36 home runs at three minor league levels in 2015. The Drillers also will sport some young blood in the manager uniform as former major leaguer Ryan Garko replaces Razor Shines. Garko, a Stanford graduate, hit .275 from 200510, playing for the Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants. This will be Garko’s first professional managerial post. “I’m very excited to join the Dodgers organization and to come to Tulsa,” says Garko. “No city or affiliate has a better reputation than Tulsa, and I look forward to bringing my family there. As a team, our goal is going to be to develop major league players, but to also win a championship.” The highlight of Garko’s professional playing days came during 2007 when his Cleveland Indians squad won the American League Central Division title and advanced to the American League Championship Series. There they met the team that would go on to win the World Series in the Boston Red Sox, who defeated the Indians in a hard-fought seven game series. Even though his club fell just short of the World Series, Garko did his part with a .314 batting average along with a home run and five RBI over just nine games during the playoff run. Most game times for the Drillers home tilts will be 7:05 p.m., but there are some day games as well.

With these cards, regular Joes like you and me, manage a fantasy team and play games against others just like they do in the big leagues minus the pulled groins, athletic plays and walk-off bombs. Likely the first fantasy baseball in history, it is of a different variety than todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leagues like the ones run by CBSsports.com, Yahoo. com and ESPN.com. Although Strat-O-Matic has a version of the game online as well, it still produces the card game to the delight of its fans. In the game, each athlete is represented by a player card on which various ratings and result tables for dice rolls are printed. A player,

who may play solitaire or against another player, is in charge of making strategic and personnel decisions for their team, while determining the results of decisions by crossreferencing dice rolls with a system of printed charts and tables. One die selects which column is used on either the batter or the pitcher card, while the other two dice specify the outcome within the column. This is a hobby showcased in the Baseball Hall of Fame, in a Spike Lee film (Crooklyn), on Broadway and in an award-winning book, Strat-O-Matic Fanatics. It is the hobby that helped inspire numerous big league sports announcers. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old school, addictive and takes about 45 minutes to play the games one-on-one. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is my 30th year as commissioner of our league, which is longer tenure, I believe, than any actual commissioner of modern-day

sports central Major League Baseball,” says Bruce Coursey. “I started playing back in 1981 when I was a junior at Northeastern State at Tahlequah. And I’m close to 55 now, born the same year as Strat-O-Matic.” There seems to be some sort of symmetry to that. “Outside of the five years I lived in Missouri, we have done this,” says Coursey. “A guy I went to high school with at Claremore, Darrell Leach, was the one who taught me to play. So when I transferred from Claremore Junior College (now Rogers State University), he said, ‘You know we have a league here?’ It was only three guys then, and I made four.

It’s not always been a boys-only club either. Coursey says there have been three women managers in the history of this league. “In fact, our Manager of the Year award is named after Carolyn Miller,” he says. “She was the first female manager we ever had. We taught her the game. Back then you could draft two teams. She drafted the Reds and White Sox and christened her team name as the Pink Sox. She sat down, played her first game, won 6-0, got up from the table and started to walk away and we said, ‘Carolyn, where are you going?’ She said she was leaving. We had to tell her it was a 120-game season. She said, ‘No.’ So she finished as our only undefeated team in history at 1-0.”

“We need new blood,” he says. “We’re in our 40s and 50s, most everyone in this league,” he says. “All but about three of the managers are married. Me and two others are single. We had a couple of managers whose wives put my picture up on their dart boards. But look at it like this, they know where their husbands are every Monday night.” After playing this fervently from March to Thanksgiving, there is almost a withdrawal period at season’s end. “I like to paraphrase the great Rogers Hornsby who once said, ‘When the season ends, I sit by the window and watch the snow coming

We now have 18 managers of teams in our league.” Unlike most fantasy baseball leagues these days that draft individual players, Coursey’s Strat-O-Matic managers draft an entire team. For example, he has had his favorite team every year —Boston Red Sox. Each manager gets a 10-player backup bench to draft of individuals from the remaining 12 teams as long as they can stay under the league’s salary cap. When players on his Red Sox fantasy team get hurt or are sent down, the reserve players at that position can then replace them in the lineup.

Real l y go o d peo pl e. ” Every Monday night from 6:30 p.m. to conclusion, the teams meet in the back room of Mazzio’s at 51st and Sheridan and play fantasy baseball until their bellies are full of pizza and all the soda they can drink. Following each baseball season, the original game’s makers pull together all the numbers of each major leaguer, and then release the game’s new edition complete with every player’s card of statistical data. Strat-O-Matic players are always working off last year’s numbers. Given the age in which we live, with every scintilla of information immediately at hand, that makes Strat-O-Matic-heads truly a different breed.

In the 30-year history of this league, Coursey says he has won the championship only once but has made the World Series five times. He won in 2011, his 25th anniversary in the game. Now that’s a love for this Strat-O-Matic game. The 18 managers will play 118 games this year all on the Monday night Mazzio’s schedule. “I really love the camaraderie,” Coursey says. “Your league is only as strong as the people involved. And we have some really good people. Really good people.”

Embrace the year’s most vibrant season with colors that are dramatic and daring so you don’t get washed away in April’s showers. Wearing a pop of color on top or bottom is a simple way to add some fun and warmth to a casual jeans and T-shirt combo. Pair denim jeans with a bold shade of red or purple on top, or flip and do dyed jeans with a plain shirt, and say goodbye to the winter blues. Or stand out with a more dramatic look and pair matching bright colors on the top and the bottom, like the For Love & Lemons orange and yellow lace crop top and skirt pairs that are all the rage right now in the fashion world.

While stripes are a popular print choice for this year, they are one of the simpler patterns you can opt for. For those of us who like to take risks, go for a more prominent design that incorporates a variation of colors and will catch eyes in no time. Put a new spin on some of your favorite traditional patterns-like floral and Hawaiian prints-and look like a beach goddess with a hibiscus in your hair.

weet, creamy, cold and delicious, ice cream is a welcome delight no matter the time of year. Whether it follows a Little League victory or is something to savor while enjoying a post-movie discussion, or as an after-dinner treat, ice cream hits that sweet spot for everyone. Located in the busy Woodland Hills Village shopping center, Baskin-Robbins offers more than 31 flavors of creamy bliss, scooping up chilly treats ranging from cones to shakes, sundaes, cold drinks and custom-made cakes every day. The Village’s Baskin-Robbins has been open for more than 25 years, but owner Kal Patel purchased the location just last September. “I’m from England,” Patel says. “And I thought, ‘I need to move.’ I looked at a lot of locations, at a lot of places. I looked at Dallas and other big towns, but I liked Tulsa. I like it here.” Seeing an opportunity, Patel chose the BaskinRobbins near 71st and Memorial and made it his own. “I refurbished it, made it nice and fresh. I emphasize customer service; it’s the key to business. I learned that from working at Disney World in Florida.”

Patel’s emphasis on great service and great ice cream has revitalized his Baskin-Robbins. “I get lots of great feedback,” he says. “And plenty of return customers.”

every month, and April’s new flavors will include Sour Patch Kids ice cream. “Pralines ‘n Cream is the go-to flavor though,” Patel says. “Everyone loves it.”

Under Patel’s leadership, the Village BaskinRobbins has flourished.

According to the Baskin-Robbins website, perennial favorite Pralines ‘n Cream was invented when Irv and Irma Robbins visited New Orleans. They tried the city’s iconic pralines and inspiration struck. They mixed vanilla ice cream with a caramel ribbon and pralines to create an instant hit. It has remained a permanent flavor since that time.

The bright, clean shop sits on the lower level of the Village, bright with natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. It’s a natural choice after dinner at one of many nearby restaurants like Leena’s, a night of laughs at the Loony Bin or a movie at Village 8. With flavors ranging from Bubble Gum and Daiquiri Ice to vanilla and Jamoca Almond Fudge, there are options that appeal to children and adults alike. When asked about his favorite flavor, Patel says, “Everyone should try the seasonal flavors.” Right now, those are Baseball Nut — a smooth, vanilla flavored ice cream swirled with a black raspberry ribbon and loaded with cashews — and Love Potion #31 — white chocolateflavored and raspberry ice creams, a raspberry ribbon, chocolate chips and raspberry-filled chocolateflavored hearts. Gum. The ice creams are rich and have just the right balance of sweet. Varieties like Peanut Butter ‘n Chocolate or Cookie Jar Mashup are generously mixed with nuts, fruits or other textures so that every bite is a tasty experience. Patel likes to give back to the community. “I am working with Partners in Education, helping with their events. I think it’s important to work with schools, with the community. I helped out with Thoreau Demonstration Academy’s recent Shark Tank event.”

It’s a natural choice after dinner at one of many nearby restaurants. Patel offers special deals at his location, including a free waffle cone with two scoops. For customers who visit nearby Hard Knocks Laser Tag for a rousing battle, Patel offers a buy one, get one for 99 cents deal. If you win the Hard Knock’s game of Sabotage, you get a free scoop. The ice cream is the star of the BaskinRobbins show of course, with enough flavors to make your head spin. “At this store, I have 48 flavors,” Patel says, “including dairy-free and sugar-free varieties. We also have Greek yogurt flavors and sherbets.” Delicious options include multiple flavors of chocolate and coffee, fruit flavors and varieties that appeal to children, like, traditional favorite Bubble

Besides high-quality ice cream in unique flavors, Baskin-Robbins offers other traditional ice cream treats like sundaes, shakes and smoothies. A signature BaskinRobbins drink is the Freeze, a cool and refreezing blended drink. “Try it with the Daiquiri Ice sherbet,” Patel suggests. You can also have them blend up a Cappuccino Blast or a Fruit Blast, enjoy a smooth and creamy parfait or a sweet mix-in with candy stirred into vanilla soft serve. Some new additions to the menu offerings include their decadent warm cookie sandwiches and sundaes. These treats feature soft, warmed cookies in your choice of flavors, one or two scoops of your favorite ice cream, and a garnish with your choice of rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles or almonds. sundaes include a rich sauce, whipped cream and a cherry. Besides delicious, creamy ice cream in a seemingly infinite variety of flavors, and other unique treats, Baskin-Robbins is famous for its ice cream cakes. “This store sells more cakes than any other store in seven states, that’s how good our cakes are,” Patel says. “We can do photo cakes too, actual edible images on the cake. We have licenses with professional sports and with Disney, so you can get any image you want.” There are more than just traditionally decorated cakes for you to take home. BaskinRobbins makes unique and fun seasonal cakes like the colorful Easter egg cake or the Bunny Roll cake. Some other festive choices include the mini cupcake cake, the Clown Cone Party Cake, the Too Cute Cupcake Cake, the Sand Pail Cake, and even a cake shaped like a football or a heart. “The most popular flavor is the Oreo cake,” Patel says. “Don’t get vanilla, don’t get chocolate. Get the Oreo. Everyone loves it.” If you don’t want to commit to an entire cake, you can pick up single serve treats like the Clown Cone or Snowman. here are cultures that immediately make you think of longstoried histories full of accomplishments. The Italian culture is one such example, having given us great works of art, architecture and most importantly, food. Much like the rich culture from which they come, the Aloisio family also has had a long and successful history with Mondo’s Ristorante Italiano. Angelo Aloisio immigrated from Abruzzi, Italy to Ellis Island in 1920 and at 15 quickly found work achieving his dream of becoming a chef. Having inherited his father’s passion for creating delicious Italian food, Louis Aloisio, affectionately referred to as Papa Lou, decided to open up a restaurant of his own right here in Tulsa in 1969. With his father’s assistance and recipes, Papa Lou met instant success. Rob Aloisio was 6 when Mondo’s first opened its doors and began working when he was only 14 bussing tables. From then on, he was involved with Mondo’s until the family sold the restaurant in 1997. Having been a Tulsa favorite for nearly three decades, it was only natural that locals would lament its loss. “Friends would see us around and tell us how much they missed Mondo’s,” Rob Aloisio says. And so, thoughts of bringing back Mondo’s began. There was

much thought and planning that went into the reopening of the family business. “I started looking for a location three years before we opened. I had grown up around Brookside and knew that’s where we wanted to be,” Rob says. When the opportunity fell into his lap, he snatched it up immediately and signed a lease. With the help of Papa Lou and his two brothers, Mondo’s was reborn. The Brookside location was absolutely perfect. The shotgun style space is not only reminiscent of something one would find in an Italian neighborhood in New York City, but it also came equipped with a brick pizza oven that would give new life and flavor to Mondo’s old pizza recipes. With comfortable banquet seating as well as tables and a fully stocked bar where you can order the full menu, Mondo’s is the perfect combination of familiar and comfortable with modern style. Though the space has a modern style, it still gives off the cozy, family friendly vibe expected of a true Italian restaurant. And just in case you wanted to question that, take a look at the walls-they are covered with around 200 photos of the various generations of the Aloisio family. “We are truly a family friendly and family run business. Our motto is, ‘If our doors are open, there’s an Aloisio in the house,’” Rob says. Preview918.com 81

The salads include choices like the dinner salad, chicken tender salad, Caesar salad and the Mob, just to name a few. And to top off these beautiful beds of greens, you can take your pick of dressings, all of which are made fresh in-house daily. “You won’t find anything that comes pre-made from a bag or bottle in our kitchen,” Rob says. For the sandwiches and subs, there are five different delicious options: the meatball sub, sausage sub, the famous hero, capocollo or the grilled pineapple chicken sandwich. And if you’re feeling adventurous and willing to veer away from the menu, Mondo’s also has changing chalkboard specials that have featured lobster ravioli stuffed with ricotta and a blend

No outside management has ever been hired; it is totally family operated. Even Rob’s two oldest children have been a part of the crew since opening day back in 2012. The three brothers — Chris, Michael and Rob — oversee the day-to-day operations with almost daily appearances by Papa Lou in the evenings. “He’s in here almost every night, shaking hands and kissing babies. He’s an icon for sure,” Rob says of his father. Upon reopening, the family brought back traditional recipes such as the homemade colossal ravioli. These massive pasta pillows are stuffed full of spiced ricotta and Italian cheeses and are smothered with your choice of homemade meat sauce or marinara. Another traditional crowd favorite is the clam and linguini plate. Plump buttered clams are combined with a delicious white sauce and served over a generous helping 82 April 2016

of Italian cheese, sautéed lobster and topped with lemon cream sauce, mushrooms and tomatoes. There is also the penne pasta with vodka cream sauce and sautéed shrimp. Both of these items are expected to join the regular menu the next time it is updated due to their overwhelming popularity. Mondo’s also has the perfect ending to any meal. Whether you prefer your desserts drinkable or edible, they’ve got you covered. The homemade limoncello or the orangecello, made from blood oranges, make great choices. But there are also Italian favorites like Tiramisu imported from Italy, New York cheesecake, homemade espresso cheesecake, Italian cream cake, cannoli, limoncello cake and authentic spumoni Italian ice cream. Basically, you can’t make a wrong decision for dessert. So be sure to swing by with your family, say hello to the Aloisios who are sure to be there, and fall in love with the flavors and flair of Mondo’s.

Since the space came with the brick pizza oven, Rob altered the recipe for the crust just a smidge to make it even better. Rather than using high gluten flour, he imports Italian double 00 flour from Naples that makes for an amazing crust. he atmosphere at La Crepe Nanou is one of romance and beauty. At the Vineyard shopping center in south Tulsa where La Crepe Nanou makes its home, the crystal chandeliers and the full glass, lighted staircase provide a lovely ambiance for guests. Decked out in European décor, La Crepe Nanou features two dining rooms. The front one is more formal with lots of gold and loud décor while the back one resembles more of a typical French bistro. Before La Crepe Nanou opened the doors in October 2014, owner Jenna Krimbill had already

opened The Wine Loft. Featuring close to 200 wines, The Wine Loft has been open since August 2014. They feature many popular French wines but also make their own signature cocktails. The Wine Loft and La Crepe Nanou share the bar and also the kitchen. For most of us who like to eat out, we don’t get to see the people behind the scenes who help provide a dining experience we won’t soon forget. For La Crepe and also the Wine Loft, the chef of the kitchen is Daniel Witwer. He has been with the restaurants since November 2015 and arrived with a kitchen full of experience. Witwer grew up in a family that loved to cook. His dad, who he

calls his biggest inspiration in the kitchen, was a chef in the Navy for four years. His mom was also a cook who taught Witwer the ropes in the kitchen. He knew he wanted to end up in the kitchen one day, so he started at the bottom at a young age. Before he graduated from high school, he was a dishwasher for a local breakfast diner owned by a family friend and where his mom worked as general manager. When he turned 18, he got a job on the line. He learned all parts of the business, and when the restaurant sold out to a franchise

when he was 19, he became the general manager. During his time as general manager, he began to write recipes and attend trainings for kitchen staff. He decided to take what he learned to Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Utica Square. He created pastries and salads and started to learn a lot about the inner workings in the restaurant business. He served at Flemings for seven years as sous-chef and then active chef. He says at that point he took a hiatus from the kitchen for about six months to decide what his next project would be. He opened Claret Café in Broken Arrow with a business partner and served as sous-chef there, until he was offered the job at La Crepe Nanou and The Wine Loft. La Crepe Nanou started out with only a dinner menu, but now is

open for lunch and brunch as well. The brunch menu contains loads of goodness from a duck omelet filled with tender roast duck, caramelized onions and a house cheese blend topped with Provençale sauce to the Croque Madame, which features black forest ham, Dijon mustard, emmental and Gruyere cheeses, avocado and Mornay sauce in a croissant. There is also a glorious selection of crepes. When asked what his favorite menu items to prepare are, Witwer says, “anything with tuna or calamari.” For dinner, there is a tuna filet that is encrusted in pepper and pine nut, seared in balsamic glaze and served with carrots grilled in truffle oil and pan-seared potatoes. On The Wine Loft side, there are tuna sliders served with avocado mousse and arugula with lemon vinaigrette on a toasted brioche

bun. There is also a baked Brie that is baked in a golden croissant crust and served with fig jam and raspberry preserves. And for dessert, Witwer’s creations include a goat cheese cheesecake and a Chocolate Tuxedo featuring three layers of fluffy chocolate with a housemade strawberry puree. Witwer says that right now, they are in the process of reconstructing the menu at both restaurants. That is exciting to him because he wants to add some Asian flair. He says that Asian food is one of his passions, and he loves to eat it and create it. Another thing he is passionate about is his new baby. As a father, he says that he loves to spend time at home with his family. His perfect day off would be to just be at home soaking up his family. Right now, Witwer is enjoying each moment with his career choice of executive chef and loves that he gets to go in to work every day and use his

gifts to be creative. He invites everyone to come try one of his delicious creations. “You won’t be disappointed.”
