So providing an envelope of cash and telling people to spend it in 48 hours isn’t exactly a challenge, but it makes this assignment sound a lot more interesting. The mission posed to Jan Gunzenheiser and her family was to spend $91.80 (we used the local area code for the amount) in two days. And if they could find fun and free activities … bonus. THE ONLY CATCH WAS THAT THEY HAD TO SPEND IT AT PLACES, EVENTS OR SHOPS PROFILED IN THE JANUARY ISSUE OF PREVIEW.

My husband was out of town, so I took my teenage son to Baker St. Pub & Grill for their Monday special. We each had the $3.99 cheeseburger and fries and it was delicious. It was a perfect meal for the two of us, and the best part was I didn’t have to cook. The next night, my husband was still working out of town and I was still on a mission not to cook dinner, so my son and I headed over to one of our favorite spots, Bravos Mexican Grill on 51st Street, near Yale Ave. We ordered the cheese dip and tableside guacamole as an appetizer and split an order of the steak fajitas.

Two nights later, my husband was home from his business trip so we decided to have a date night to re-connect. We headed over to Brookside to check out Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar with the rest of the challenge money. I ordered the citrus and garlic chicken, and my husband had the chicken piccata. Our server told us my order was their best seller, and it was easy to see why because it was so tender and flavorful. For dessert we split the Heath Bar bread pudding that was the perfect end to a wonderful meal.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center
Great moments throughout history have often been captured on camera. On Dec. 4, 1956, one such image captured a glorious moment in rock ’n’ roll history: the Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash) that recorded a jam session at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studio in Memphis, Tenn. Audiences learn tidbits like how Presley ended up getting the credit for Perkins’ hit “Blue Suede Shoes,” why Cash decided to leave Sun Records and sign with RCA Records, and just how off-the-wall Lewis really was. They are the stories of each star’s beginnings, before they were hit with scandals and hard times later in their careers. The musicians treat the crowd to hits like “Wild One,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “That’s All Right, Mama,” “I Walk the Line,” “Matchbox,” “Who Do You Love” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” There are no prerecorded tracks or lip-synching; that’s what makes Million Dollar Quartet such a stellar show. The moves, mannerisms and voices of Cash, Perkins, Presley and Lewis are supremely replicated, as are the piano and guitar skills that were so admired in the original performers. The fun musical romp through that chance encounter in Sun Studios makes for an incredible onstage journey. In the show’s finale, a restaging of that remarkable image captured on camera is a truly powerful moment — a photographic reminder of the four musical pioneers’ contribution to rock ’n’ roll history.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Tulsa Performing Arts Center
To Kill a Mockingbird is a compelling and timeless story told through the eyes of 6-year-old Scout, the tomboyish daughter of small-town lawyer Atticus Finch. As a tense tug of war between justice and racism heats up, Atticus and his family must learn to temper violence and hatred with courage and compassion. Adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird continues to inspire hope in the face of inequality. Playhouse Tulsa artistic director Courtneay Sanders directs.
ARLO GUTHRIE Brady Theater (Tulsa)
Is it possible to be a one-hit wonder three times? The question is provoked by the recording career of Arlo Guthrie, which is best remembered for three songs in three different contexts. There is “The City of New Orleans,” Guthrie’s only Top 40 hit, which earns him an entry in Wayne Jancik’s The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders. There is also “Coming into Los Angeles,” which Guthrie sang at the legendary Woodstock music festival featuring prominently in both the Woodstock movie and multi-platinum soundtrack album. And there is “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” the comic-monologue-in-song that gave him his initial fame and took up the first side of his debut LP, the million-selling Alice’s Restaurant. Whether these successful tracks make him a one-, two-, or three-hit wonder, they were arguably both flukes in a performing career that was still going strong a full 40 years after Guthrie first gained national recognition and facilitators of that career. With their help, he spent 15 years signed to a major record label, charting 11 LPs, after which he was able to set up his own label and go on issuing albums. More significant, he maintained a steady following as a live performer, touring worldwide year after year to play before audiences delighted by his humorous persona and his musical mixture of folk, rock, country, blues, and gospel styles in songs almost equally divided between his own originals and well-chosen cover tunes.
Arlo Guthrie grew up surrounded by friends of his father, Woody, including such folksingers as Pete Seeger and Cisco Houston. Houston brought him onstage at the Greenwich Village nightclub Gerde’s Folk City for an impromptu performance when he was only 10. Guthrie later said that he had been unaware of his father’s fame until he switched from public school to a progressive private school in the sixth grade and found that students there were singing Woody Guthrie songs like “This Land Is Your Land.” Only then did he begin learning his father’s music. Nevertheless, he did not expect to become a performer himself, feeling that his introspective personality was not suited to such a career. Preview918.com 11

CHRIS YOUNG Brady Theater (Tulsa)
The grandson of onetime Louisiana Hayride performer Richard Yates, country singer-songwriter Chris first drew the public’s attention when he appeared on the Nashville Star television show in 2006. Young’s singing abilities first surfaced in children’s theater productions in grade school, and with his family’s full support, he threw himself into learning all he could about music, and country music in particular. By the time he was a senior in high school he was already playing clubs in the Nashville area, and his self-released debut album was out before he even graduated from high school. Young attended college at Belmont University in Nashville and then Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, all while still managing to do some 150 live shows a year.
By playing pure and simple rock ‘n’ roll without making an explicit issue of her gender, Joan Jett became a figurehead for several generations of female rockers. Jett’s brand of rock is loud and stripped-down, yet with overpowering hooks — a combination of the Stones’ tough, sinewy image and beat, AC/DC chords, and glam rock hooks. As the numerous covers she has recorded show, she adheres both to rock tradition and breaks with it — she plays classic three-chord rock, yet she also loves the trashy elements (in particular, Gary Glitter) of it as well, and she plays with a defiant sneer. From her first band, the Runaways, through her hit-making days in the ‘80s with the Blackhearts right until her unexpected revival in the ‘90s, she hasn’t changed her music, yet she’s kept her quality control high, making one classic single (“I Love Rock ‘n Roll”) along the way. By the time she was 15, she had formed her first band and was performing. Kim Fowley, a Los Angeles record producer, discovered the band at one of their gigs and became their manager; soon, he renamed the all-female group the Runaways. The band released three albums that never had much commercial success in America, yet were very popular in Japan. The Runaways broke up in 1980 and Jett moved to New York to begin a solo career. Jett independently released her self-titled debut album in 1980 in America, since no labels were interested in signing her. The record was a more traditional rock ‘n’ roll record than the punky Runaways, yet it retained her previous band’s defiant attitude. The record sold very well for an independent release, leading to a contract with Boardwalk Records, who reissued the album under the title Bad Reputation; it soon climbed to No. 51 on the American charts. Jett formed the Blackhearts between Bad Reputation and her second album, 1981’s I Love Rock-n-Roll. Released at the end of 1981, I Love Rock-n-Roll became her greatest success, sending her into the Top 10. The title track was an enormous success, spending seven weeks at No. 1 in the spring of 1982. The follow-up single, a version of Tommy James & the Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover,” went Top 10 as well; a single of Gary Glitter’s “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” taken from the Bad Reputation album, reached No. 20 in the summer of 1982. Album, released in 1983, went gold yet had no hits that compared with “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” or “Crimson and Clover.” 12 February 2016
He was offered and accepted a gig fronting the house band at Cowboy’s in Arlington, Texas, and it was there that a fan kept insisting that he audition for Nashville Star. Young eventually made the trip to Houston and passed the audition, and the whole affair paid off handsomely with a contract from RCA Records. Young’s debut single, “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” a song he wrote with Larry Wayne Clark, was released in 2006, followed later in the year by a Buddy Cannon-produced album called simply Chris Young. A second album, The Man I Want to Be, appeared in 2009. Young’s third album, 2011’s Neon, may not have gone gold, but it did have “Tomorrow,” a heart-wrenching ballad that was his biggest hit to date, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard country charts and cracking the pop Top 40 on its way to going platinum. “You,” the second single from Neon, also went to No. 1 on the country charts, and two other hits followed: “Neon” and “I Can Take It from There.” Young delivered his brighter, happier third album A.M. in the fall of 2013; it was preceded by the party anthem “Aw Naw,” which peaked at 16 on the Billboard charts. A.M. produced two further country Top 10 hits with the softer “Who I Am with You” and “Lonely Eyes,” singles that appeared on the charts in 2014. Young returned in the fall of 2015 with “I’m Comin’ Over,” another Top 10 hit that was also the title track to his fifth album, which saw release in November of that year.

THE TEMPTATIONS River Spirit Event Center (Tulsa)
Thanks to their fine-tuned choreography — and even finer harmonies — The Temptations became the definitive male vocal group of the 1960s. One of Motown’s most elastic acts, they tackled both lush pop and politically charged funk with equal flair, and weathered a steady stream of changes in personnel and consumer tastes with rare dignity and grace. The Temptations’ initial five-man lineup formed in Detroit in 1961 as a merger of two local vocal groups, the Primes and the Distants. Baritone Otis Williams, Elbridge (aka El, or Al) Bryant, and bass vocalist Melvin Franklin were longtime veterans of the Detroit music scene when they joined together in the Distants, who in 1959 recorded the single “Come On” for the local Northern label. Around the same time, the Primes, a trio comprised of tenor Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams (no relation to Otis) and Kell Osborne, relocated to the Motor City from their native Alabama; they quickly found success locally, and their manager even put together a girl group counterpart dubbed the Primettes. (Later, three of the Primettes — Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard — formed the Supremes.) In 1961, the Primes disbanded, but not before Otis Williams saw them perform live, where he was impressed both by Kendricks’ vocal prowess and Paul Williams’ choreography skills. Soon, Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Bryant, Franklin and Kendricks joined together as the Elgins; after a name change to The Temptations, they signed to the Motown subsidiary Miracle, where they released a handful of singles over the ensuing months. Only one, the 1962 effort “Dream Come True,” achieved any commercial success, however, and in 1963, Bryant either resigned or was fired after physically attacking Paul Williams. The Tempts’ fortunes changed dramatically in 1964 when they recruited tenor David Ruffin to replace Bryant; after entering the studio with writer/producer Smokey Robinson, they emerged with the pop smash “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” the first in a series of 37 career Top 10 hits. With Robinson again at the helm, they returned in 1965 with their signature song “My Girl,” a No. 1 pop and R&B hit; other Top 20 hits that year included “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Don’t Look Back” and “My Baby.” In 1966, the Tempts recorded another Robinson hit, “Get Ready,” before forgoing his smooth popcraft for the harder-edged soul of producers Norman Whitfield and Brian Holland. After spotlighting Kendricks on the smash “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” the group allowed Ruffin to take control over a string of hits including “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” Beginning around 1967, Whitfield assumed full production control, and their records became ever rougher and more muscular, as typified by the 1968 success “I Wish It Would Rain.” After Ruffin failed to appear at a 1968 live performance, the other four Tempts fired him; he was replaced by ex-Contour Dennis Edwards, whose less polished
voice adapted perfectly to the psychedelic-influenced soul period the group entered following the success of the single “Cloud Nine.” As the times changed, so did the group, and as the 1960s drew to a close, The Temptations’ music became overtly political; in the wake of “Cloud Nine” — its title a thinly veiled drug allegory — came records like “Run Away Child, Running Wild,” “Psychedelic Shack” and “Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World Is Today).” After the chart-topping success of the gossamer ballad “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” in 1971, Kendricks exited for a solo career. Soon, Paul Williams left the group as well. In their stead, the remaining trio recruited tenors Damon Harris and Richard Street; after the 1971 hit “Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are),” they returned in 1972 with the brilliant No. 1 single “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” While the Tempts hit the charts regularly throughout 1973 with “Masterpiece,” “Let Your Hair Down” and “The Plastic Man,” their success as a pop act gradually dwindled as the ‘70s wore on. After Harris exited in 1975 (replaced by tenor Glenn Leonard), the group cut 1976’s The Temptations Do the Temptations, their final album for Motown. With Louis Price taking over for Edwards, they signed to Atlantic, and attempted to reach the
disco market with the LPs Bare Back and Hear to Tempt You. After Edwards returned to the fold (resulting in Price’s hasty exit), the Temptations re-entered the Motown stable and scored a 1980 hit with “Power.” In 1982, Ruffin and Kendricks returned for Reunion, but problems with Motown, as well as personal differences, cut Ruffin’s and Kendricks’ tenures short. In the years that followed, The Temptations continued touring and recording, although by the ‘90s they were essentially an oldies act; only Otis Williams remained from the original lineup. In 1998, The Temptations returned with Phoenix Rising; that same year, their story was also the subject of a well-received NBC television miniseries. Ear-Resistable followed in the spring of 2000 and would win the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance the following year. In 2004, Legacy became their last album for Motown as 2006’s Reflections was released by New Door. The label also released their 2007 effort, Back to Front, which featured new recordings of soul classics from the ‘60s and ‘70s. HANK WILLIAMS JR. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (Tulsa/Catoosa)
The offspring of famous musicians often have a hard time creating a career for themselves, yet Hank Williams, Jr. is one of the few to develop a career that is not only successful, but markedly different from his legendary father. Originally, Hank Jr. simply copied and played his father’s music, but as he grew older, he began to carve out his own niche and it was one that owed as much to countryrock as it did to honky-tonk. In the late ‘70s, he retooled his image to appeal both to outlaw country fans and rowdy Southern rockers, and his makeover worked, resulting in a string of Top 10 singles — including the No. 1 hits “Texas Women,” “Dixie on My Mind,” “All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down),” “Honky Tonkin’” and “Born to Boogie” — that ran into the late ‘80s. Hank Jr. never was above capitalizing on his father’s name, yet his tributes and name-dropping often seemed affectionate, not crass. Also, Bocephus (as his father nicknamed him when he was a child) was a passionate cheerleader for patriotic American values; he even wrote a pro-Gulf War song during 1991. All of these actions helped make him an American superstar during the ‘80s, becoming one of the most recognizable popular culture figures of the era. As new country took over the airwaves in the ‘90s, Williams slowly disappeared from the charts and his concerts stopped selling as well as they did 10 years earlier, yet he retained a devoted core audience throughout the decade. The son of Hank and Audrey Williams, Hank Jr. was born in 1949. Less than four years later, his father died, leaving behind a huge legacy. When Hank Jr. was 8 years old, Audrey decided to push her son into the spotlight, positioning him as the rightful heir to his father’s legacy. Dressed in a white Nudie suit, he would sing Hank Sr.’s biggest hits on package tours, and by the time he was 11, he had made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. Hank Jr. recorded his father’s “Long Gone Lonesome Blues” as his debut single, and the record was a hit upon its early 1964 release, climbing to No. 5. Though he immediately had a hit, he wasn’t able to follow it up with another Top 10 hit until 1966, when his self-penned “Standing in the Shadows” reached No. 5. By that time, he had begun to grow tired of his reputation as a Hank Williams imitator and was trying to create his own style, as “Standing in the Shadows” proved. Following that single, he began to explore rock ‘n’ roll somewhat, occasionally performing under the name Rockin’ Randall. Despite his half-hearted rock ‘n’ roll attempts, Williams continued to concentrate on country music, turning out a string of hit singles, including the No. 1 “All for the Love of Sunshine” and a number of inspirational cuts released under the name Luke the Drifter, Jr., a reference to his father’s alter ego. Though his career was doing well, Hank Jr. began falling into drug and alcohol abuse after he turned 18 years old. His personal life became progressively more complicated, culminating in a suicide attempt in 1974. 14 February 2016
Following the attempt, Williams moved to Alabama, where he not only got his life together, but he changed his musical direction as well. Hooking up with Southern rockers like Charlie Daniels and the Marshall Tucker Band’s Toy Caldwell, he recorded Hank Williams, Jr. & Friends, which fused hardcore country with rock ‘n’ roll. Though he wasn’t scoring as many hits as he had in the early ‘70s, his music was becoming more original and focused. Just as his career was being revived, tragedy beset Williams. While he was climbing a mountain in Montana in 1975, he fell 442 feet down the side of the mountain. His injuries were serious — his skull was split and his face was crushed — but he survived. Following extensive reconstructive cosmetic surgery, he had to relearn how to speak and sing. Williams’ recovery period lasted a full two years. When he re-emerged in 1977, he aligned himself with the outlaw country movement, as Waylon Jennings produced Hank Jr.’s comeback effort, The New South. It took several years before Williams began to have hits again, but in the final six months of 1979, he had two Top 10 singles, “Family Tradition” and “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound,” which began a virtually uninterrupted streak of 29 Top 10 hits that ran into 1988. By the end of the ‘80s, Hank Jr.’s persona was becoming a little tired, especially in light of the new breed of clean-cut new country singers who had taken over Nashville. Williams could still have a hit, but by the end of 1990, he was no longer hitting the Top 10 and by the middle of the decade he had trouble reaching the Top 40. Despite his declining record sales, Hank Jr. remained a popular concert draw into the latter half of the ‘90s, as well as a relatively prolific character in the studio. His string of new albums tapered off in the early 2000s, with 2003’s I’m One of You marking his final album for several years.

happenings song demo and circulated it to club owners and others involved in the London scene, including the group’s soon-to-be manager Ron Smallwood. The demo’s popularity led Iron Maiden to self-release it as 1979’s The Soundhouse Tapes EP, which soon sold out its 5,000-copy run. After scoring a deal with EMI, the band enlisted a second guitarist, Dennis Stratton. Late in 1979, Sampson departed due to health issues and former Samson drummer Clive Burr took his place behind the kit. The band’s self-titled debut arrived in 1980; though it was recorded in a hurry, it was nonetheless a U.K. hit due to the single “Running Free.” Its 1981 follow-up, Killers, had a harder approach thanks in part to producer Martin Birch — with whom the group worked until his 1992 retirement — and also saw the replacement of Stratton with Murray’s childhood friend Adrian Smith. Due to substance abuse issues, Di’Anno was dismissed from Iron Maiden after the Killer World Tour in 1981. His replacement was Dickinson, another former Samson member who joined that September and made his recorded debut with the band on 1982’s groundbreaking The Number of the Beast. Boasting songs such as the title track and “Hallowed Be Thy Name,” it became known as one of the all-time great rock albums. Though it was the band’s first chart-topping album in the U.K. and was a Top 10 seller in several other countries, Christian activists and conservative politicians in America claimed the band was satanic (which Iron Maiden denied). Nevertheless, The Number of the Beast’s success made Iron Maiden international superstars, and despite the replacement of Burr with former Trust drummer Nicko McBrain, they changed very little of their style on 1983’s Piece of Mind. The band undertook two major tours before recording 1984’s Powerslave, which would go on to be another cult hit and featured the 13-minute epic “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” which was inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem. The product of Powerslave’s 11-month tour was 1985’s Live After Death, a double-live album featuring their biggest hit singles. Now established as a powerful and unique metal band, Iron Maiden experimented on their long-awaited 1986 album, Somewhere in Time, incorporating synthesized bass and guitar and futuristic themes. They continued to expand their sound and subject matter with 1988’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Another concept album featuring the singles “The Evil That Men Do” and “The Clairvoyant,” as well as the band’s first use of keyboards, it was Maiden’s most critically acclaimed album since The Number of the Beast. When Iron Maiden reconvened to work on a new album, Smith left over creative differences; ex-Gillan guitarist Janick Gers joined the fold for 1990’s No Prayer for the Dying. A return to the band’s stripped-down sound of the early ‘80s, it gave Iron Maiden their first No. 1 U.K. single with “Bring Your Daughter...To the Slaughter.” At the end of the band’s 1991 tour, Dickinson expressed his desire to leave and work on his own music. However, he recorded another album, 1992’s Fear of the Dark, and toured with the band, ultimately leaving in 1993.

IRON MAIDEN BOK Center (Tulsa)
Known for such powerful hits as “Two Minutes to Midnight” and “The Trooper,” Iron Maiden is one of heavy metal’s most influential bands. They’re also one of metal’s most enduring and distinctive acts, thanks to their melodic guitars, ambitious songwriting, powerhouse vocalist Bruce Dickinson and iconic mascot Eddie. One of the first groups to be classified as “British metal,” Iron Maiden helped set the rock scene for the ‘80s and inspired generations of subsequent bands, including Metallica, Dream Theater, Slipknot, In Flames and Avenged Sevenfold. Despite a lack of radio airplay or mainstream media support, early allegations of Satanism, and a revolving lineup, they have remained consistently popular throughout their career. Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 in Leyton, East London by bassist Steve Harris. The group’s lineup was volatile during its early years, but eventually settled on drummer Doug Sampson, guitarist Dave Murray and vocalist Paul Di’Anno in 1978. Later that year, this incarnation of the band recorded a four16 February 2016
Iron Maiden took some time off after Dickinson’s departure, returning with 1995’s The X Factor, which featured new singer and ex-Wolfsbane member Blaze Bayley. While the record didn’t perform as well commercially as some of its predecessors, it was still a success in England. Its follow-up, 1998’s Virtual XI, was one of the band’s lowest-selling albums; in addition, Bayley was having issues with his voice, and he left Iron Maiden early in 1999. Soon after, Dickinson and Smith returned to the group, who released the ambitious, Kevin Shirley-produced Brave New World the following year. Iron Maiden remained reinvigorated throughout the 2000s, touring and recording almost as consistently as they did in the ‘80s. They reunited with Shirley for 2003’s critically acclaimed Dance of Death, which was inspired by battles ranging from the conquering of a 13th century Cathar stronghold (“Montségur”) to a notable World War I campaign (“Paschendale”). The band’s 14th album, 2006’s A Matter of Life and Death, was the first to enter the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. Iron Maiden worked with Shirley once again on 2010’s The Final Frontier, which reached the top of the charts in 28 countries and earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for the single “El Dorado.” In 2013, the band began work on its 16th studio album. Though the album was completed in mid-2014, the discovery of cancerous tumors on Dickinson’s tongue and neck slowed things down. He underwent rigorous chemotherapy and was declared cancer free in May 2015. The 92-minute, double-length album Book Of Souls dropped in September 2015.

AMERICA
River Spirit Event Center (Tulsa)
A light folk-rock act of the early ‘70s, America had several Top 10 hits, including the number ones “A Horse with No Name” and “Sister Golden Hair.” Vocalists/ guitarists Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley met while they were still in high school in the late ‘60s; all three were sons of U.S. Air Force officers who were stationed in the U.K. After they completed school in 1970, they formed an acoustic folk-rock quartet called Daze, which was soon pared down to the trio of Bunnell, Peek and Beckley. Adopting the name America, the group landed a contract and by the fall of 1970, the group was recording its debut album in London. “A Horse with No Name,” America’s debut single, was released at the end of 1971. In January 1972, the song, which strongly recalled the acoustic numbers of Neil Young, became a No. 3 hit in the U.K. The group’s self-titled debut album followed the same stylistic pattern and became a hit as well, peaking at No. 14. Following their British success, America returned to North America, beginning a supporting tour for the Everly Brothers. “A Horse with No Name” was released in the U.S. that spring, where it soon became a No. 1 single, pushing Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” off the top of the charts. “I Need You” became another Top 10 hit that summer, and the group began work on their second album. “Ventura Highway,” the first single released from this collaboration, became their third straight Top 10 hit in December 1972. In the beginning of 1973, America won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1972. Homecoming was released in January 1973, becoming a Top 10 hit in the U.S. and peaking at No. 21 in the U.K. America’s essential sound didn’t change with this record; it just became more polished. However, the hits stopped coming fairly soon. Hat Trick, the group’s third album, was released toward the end of 1973; it failed to make it past No. 28 on the American charts. Released in the late fall of 1974, Holiday returned America to the top of the charts, peaking at No. 3 and launching the hit singles “Tin Man” and “Lonely People.” “Sister Golden Hair,” pulled from 1975’s Hearts, became their second No. 1 single. That same year, the group released History: America’s Greatest Hits, which would eventually sell over four million copies.

BRAD PAISLEY BOK Center (Tulsa)
Arguably the preeminent male country artist to emerge in the 2000s, Brad Paisley cannily blended the past with the present, paying constant tribute to his forefathers, but pushing the music forward into the new millennium, expanding its sonic and thematic possibilities. “We Danced,” from his debut Who Needs Pictures (1999), topped the charts, starting a streak of Top 10 singles that ran uninterrupted until 2011. Part II, his aptly named second album, came out in 2001 and confirmed his status as a rising country star. Debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard country album charts, Part II spawned four Top 10 singles — “Two People Fell in Love,” “Wrapped Around,” “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song),” and “I Wish You’d Stay” — with “I’m Gonna Miss Her” reaching No. 1. Released in the summer of 2003, Mud on the Tires was Paisley’s breakthrough, debuting at No. 1 and generating another four Top 10 singles: the cheeky novelty “Celebrity,” “Little Moments,” the mournful Alison Krauss duet “Whiskey Lullaby” (which went platinum), and “Mud on the Tires” (the latter going to No. 1). Mud on the Tires eventually went double platinum, as did its 2005 sequel, Time Well Wasted. 5th Gear arrived in the summer of 2007 and it was an instant smash, debuting at No. 3 with its four singles — “Ticks,” “Online,” “Letter to Me,” and “I’m Still a Guy” — all reaching No. 1. “Old Alabama,” the second single pulled from 2011’s This Is Country Music, became Paisley’s 19th No. 1 single, followed quickly by his 20th No. 1, the Carrie Underwood duet “Remind Me.” But there were signs of a chart slowdown when
“Camouflage” became his first single in 11 years to not reach the Top 10 (it topped out at 15); similarly, This Is Country Music and American Saturday Night both stalled at gold where their predecessors had gone platinum. An ambitious, genre-hopping album, 2013’s Wheelhouse was preceded by the “Southern Comfort Zone” single in the fall of 2012 and “Beat This Summer,” which appeared a month before Wheelhouse’s release. Within a year of the release of Wheelhouse, Paisley was back with a new single, “River Bank,” which hit No. 12 on the country charts. Its accompanying album, Moonshine in the Trunk, was solidly a country record, and featured duets with Carrie Underwood and Emmylou Harris. It became his eighth straight album to top the country charts, and reached No. 2 on the pop charts. Preview918.com 17

MUTEMATH Cain’s Ballroom (Tulsa)
Taking cues from several decades of alternative rock, Mutemath fuse together New Order’s synth-dance epics, the Stone Roses’ shambling shuffle, Radiohead’s chilliness, Air’s ambient pop and the booming vocals of mainstream pop/rock. Singer Paul Meany, formerly of the Christian rock group Earthsuit, was working in New Orleans when he began a long-distance musical correspondence with drummer/programmer Darren King, who was based in Springfield, Mo. The two began sending CDs back and forth up the Mississippi River, eventually putting enough songs together to convince King to relocate to New Orleans and start a proper band. After adding guitarist Greg Hill and bassist Roy Mitchell-Cardenas, the new band completed the Meany-King compositions in 2003; Meany then took the resulting demo to noted CCM producer Tedd T., who was enthusiastic enough to launch a new indie label, Teleprompt Records, in order to release 2004’s Reset EP. The EP’s success allowed Mutemath and Teleprompt to negotiate a distribution deal with Warner Bros., which reissued the EP in 2005. Although Mutemath completed their self-titled debut album that same year, marketing disputes between Teleprompt and Warner Bros. delayed its release for nearly a year. An expanded version of Mutemath, featuring remastered tracks from Reset and a bonus limited-edition live EP, was released on Sept. 26, 2006. “Typical” proved to be a modestly successful single, cracking the mainstream rock charts in 2007 and finding a home on MTV, where the song’s Grammy-nominated video became a hit. Tours with Eisley, Alanis Morissette and Matchbox Twenty honed the band’s live chops, and Mutemath returned in 2009 with a new album, Armistice. The album debuted at No. 18, and Mutemath toured heavily in support. Todd Gummerman replaced Hill that October, and the follow-up studio album, Odd Soul, was released in 2011. Vitals, the band’s fourth studio long-player, was issued in 2015. 18 February 2016

Purpose-Driven Playhouse WRITTEN BY: Julie Werner
I
t was 1960 when Harper Lee published the award winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on a story of racial injustice that envelops a small-town community, the narrative is ironically as relevant today as it was back then.
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse
Tackling tough subject matter like race relations in To Kill a Mockingbird, The Playhouse Tulsa proves once again its love of theater can’t be measured by a small operating budget.
The story is based in Maycomb, Ala. in the year 1935, but Courtneay Sanders, director of The Playhouse Tulsa’s production of the story, says that unfortunately the conflict is as much like the lead stories in today’s news in 2016. Sanders, an Arkansas native, is co-founder of The Playhouse Tulsa, a non-profit regional theatre company. Started in 2007, The Playhouse Tulsa is in its sixth full season of local productions. Sanders and her friend, Chris Crawford, came up with the idea for the Playhouse while driving to Dallas to see A Christmas Carol. They began with sold-out performances of Romeo and Juliet in January 2009. From that point on, The Playhouse Tulsa has created a reputation for providing an incomparable product.
Little Women
Sanders also serves as the director of theatre for Oral Roberts University. Along with her incredible team such as resident designer Shawn Irish, a national award winning scenic designer, and Jennifer Cozens, who holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Costume Design from the University of Oklahoma, The Playhouse Tulsa has accomplished a great deal. Sanders says that typically her company produces four shows per year. They partner with schools to provide productions that children can attend and learn from. She likes to see it as an educational showcase of classical theatre for students. The Playhouse Tulsa has performed shows such as It’s a Wonderful Life, Charlotte’s Web and A Charlie Brown Christmas. is to create challenging, excellent, innovative and culturally diverse performances that educate, entertain and enrich both its community of artists and the public at large. They have even developed workshops and plan to include arts training programs geared specifically for students ages kindergarten through 12th grade with classes including acting, playwriting, design, as well as basic arts appreciation, among others. For the production of To Kill a Mockingbird, Sanders has a top-notch cast. Making his Tulsa Playhouse debut as Atticus Finch is the wonderful Adrian Alexander. Sanders says he is perfect for the part in that he displays many of Atticus’ characteristics naturally. “He is smart and determined but loving and willing to stand up for what is right,” she says of Alexander. Also perfect is Jean Louis “Scout” Finch, who is played by Elle Kalcik. “She is only 10 years old but she can handle the part entirely.” Sanders explains that she usually doesn’t even look at anyone under the age of 12, but Elle gracefully delivers the character of Scout perfectly. The cast contains over 20 people, with almost half of these making their Tulsa Playhouse debut. Moonlight and Magnolias
To Kill a Mockingbird construction sketch
The story focuses on lawyer Atticus Finch and his daughter, Scout, who also serves as the narrator. Fitch brings new hope to a neighborhood in turmoil after he agrees to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman. Because of his decision, his children are subject to prejudice and abuse from their schoolmates and neighborhood friends. Through courage and compassion, Atticus defends the innocent man and stands up for what is right no matter the cost. Infused with music and directed in a contemporary style, The Playhouse Tulsa’s production of this best-loved classic promises to further reveal the emotional depth and genuine heart of this poignant story. Through the conflict of the story and even the relevance it brings to today’s issues, it is as moving and mesmerizing as you could ever hope to find. Sanders expresses that her hope is that the audience takes away from the production how things have remained the same. The story of Atticus Finch could take place in any community at any time, no matter the gender or race.

The Escape Tulsa features high pressure, live-action scenarios that test a group’s ability to solve riddles, gather clues and work together to find a door-opening code before the clock runs out.

T
he door closes and locks behind you. Immediately the clock begins to count down — there’s only one hour to escape. Hidden around the room are clues that lead to the escape code, but will you be able to find them all? Frantically, you pick up object after object — is it a clue, or a diversion? A timer with big red numbers continuously flashes the minutes left for you and your team to piece together the riddle; time is closing in quickly. A couple members of the group shout — they think they’ve
found the code! You try it on the door, but no. It doesn’t work. Trying not to panic, your group goes back over the clues as time dissolves. Your heart is pounding. Only a few minutes remain. Will you be able to escape before it’s too late? No, this is not a scene from the horror movie Saw. This is The Escape Tulsa.
The Escape Tulsa is modeled after a nontraditional entertainment concept currently growing wild in popularity known as
“escape rooms.” Escape rooms feature high pressure, live-action scenarios that test a group’s ability to solve riddles, gather clues, and work together to find an escape code before the clock runs out. “After graduating from OU, (owner) Andrew (Gibson) traveled all over Europe for a few months. Escape rooms were a big deal over there, and he fell in love with the concept when he experienced it for himself in Northern Ireland,” says Amanda Kirkland, general manager of
es ca pe The Escape Tulsa. “Andrew knew there was nothing like this in the Midwest, and he decided to open a location, not knowing how it would be received. Shortly after opening, it blew up in popularity, and he now has locations not only in Tulsa but also in Oklahoma City, Omaha (Neb.) and Branson (Mo.), with more on the rise.”
Constructed in a house that’s over 100 years old, the Tulsa location overflows with the mysterious charm of a bygone era, pulling players into the game from the moment they enter. Inside the house are three different escape room scenarios to test your wits, each with its own unique riddle to solve. “All of the rooms are built around one key clue,” says Kirkland. “Our game developers are very meticulous and pick the rooms apart before opening them up for a live game.” First, there’s the Four Brothers room — the old study/library of an alchemist whose obsessions caused him to slowly lose his mind. Players are to discover what drove him mad in order to escape. The solve rate is 38 percent.
The second room, with a solve rate of 34 percent, is called The Forgotten Outpost. A longabandoned Soviet bunker, this room holds the key to a modern
day assassination attempt. Players must decipher the code to escape and stop the assassination. And then there’s Uptown Murder, the last and by far most challenging room. The feel of this scenario is very 1940s/50s crime noir, especially owing to the fact that a (fake) dead body lies sprawled across the floor in the middle of the room. Who is the killer? Players are called upon to investigate the crime and try to identify the killer before he strikes again. The solve rate in under 10 percent.
“It’s very much a brain stretching activity,” Kirkland says. “Players need each other in order to work together and solve the puzzles. Each individual brings something unique to the group dynamic, finding clues that someone else might not necessarily have been able to find.” Kirkland also wants to provide some reassurance to anyone out there who still might have those Saw movie scenarios in their heads or feels claustrophobic at the thought of being locked in a room. “This isn’t designed to be scary. There are no live actors jumping out at you, no rats or anything weird like that. The rooms are the size of large bedrooms or living rooms with comfy chairs. And of course players are free to leave at any time through the emergency exit
door provided in each of the rooms. Players are not allowed to re-enter the game once they leave, however,” she says. Because the primary tools for solving escape room riddles are communication and collective brainstorming, The Escape Tulsa is the perfect place for your next corporate team building event. Instead of traditional options like ropes courses or luncheons, take your company somewhere that is genuinely a blast.
other. There are actually two Forgotten Outpost rooms that are completely identical to one another, making it ideal for teams to race against each other. If you have not yet experienced The Escape Tulsa, a new addiction is waiting for you. Bump it up to the top of your social calendar because there’s nothing else like it in town. Grab a group of friends (four or six is ideal) and come see if you are lucky enough to escape.
“We love to get the word out on corporate team building,” states Kirkland. “Our entire facility is available for private rental and is open during work hours. We have a large meeting room where a group can bring in their own food or outside caterer. This is such an ideal venue for team building events because not one person can solve a room alone and it is in everyone’s best interest to work together. And the best part is, it’s not work because you are having fun. Sometimes we have groups that spend the entire day here. ” A great way to foster some healthy competition — especially for a corporate event — is to pit two different groups against each

T
he age of exploration isn’t over just because everything has been mapped out and GPSed. Green Country has countless adventures for you that you never knew existed, and all you need to discover them is a smartphone and the right apps to act as a guide.
Things to Do There’s no shortage of things going on in Green Country if you know where to look. If you don’t, then the Eventful app is perfect for finding everything from concerts to comedy, from arts festivals to hockey games — all sortable by type, date and location. If you’re looking for a particular food, or a specific dish, then you can check out Foodspotting, which maps out where you can find exactly you’re in the mood for, no matter how specific your craving is. If your tastes are broader, though, then take your pick of Yelp or Foursquare to find places for dining, shopping or sightseeing, all curated by user reviews.

Finding People Sometimes where you are or what you’re doing is less important than whom you’re with. If you don’t already know those people, you can find them through Meetup — an app where people can host events for others with
similar interests. Those interests are definitely diverse, so whether you’re looking for hobby clubs, business contacts, religious groups, exercise partners, political activists, or just people to have a fun time with (whatever
that happens to mean to you), you can find it here. And if there’s not already a Meetup group for your niche, you can make one yourself. Founding and hosting a group requires a small monthly fee.
a Ride
Knowing where you’re going and whom you’re going with isn’t particularly helpful if you can’t get there, but once again, apps have you covered.
Finding Your Way
Google Maps remains the king of navigation apps, providing up-to-date and accurate maps, reliable travel time forecasts based on traffic patterns, and good search. In addition to providing route information in cars and on foot, it also allows for navigation using public transportation and is one of the best ways to plan your trip on Tulsa’s bus system. However, there are a few other apps to check out if you’d like more specialized functions. Cycle enthusiasts might like MapMyRide, which not only shows biking trails, but you can use it to plan biking routes, find biking groups, learn about events and more. Runners have the equivalent MapMyRun. A more general map app that also offers social functionality is
30 February 2016
Scout GPS, which not only allows you to post your location to friends so you can easily find each other, but also provides parking and point of interest suggestions. Sometimes it’s also useful to download maps so that you can view them even if you don’t have constant data connection, in which case you might want to check out HERE Maps, which has many of Google Maps’ features plus offline maps, making it a viable alternative.
Naturally, Uber is the easiest way to get a ride with a car quickly, and Green Country has quite a few drivers. On the off chance that you haven’t heard of it, Uber is like taxi service where you can conveniently request that drivers pick you up and drop you off at your destination, paid through a credit card. Riders rate drivers and drivers rate riders, so everyone is kept on their best behavior. If you’d like to take things slower or explore off the paved path, you can also rent a bicycle through Spinlister — a service where ordinary bicycle owners loan out their non-powered vehicles (which the site covers through insurance). The site also allows users to rent out surfboards and ski equipment, but for some reason there don’t seem to be many loaners of those two in our land-locked, mountain-less state.

Will You Be Mine? Whether you are single and ready to mingle or all loved up, we’ve got some fun and unexpected suggestions for how to spend your Valentine’s holiday.
L
et’s dig deeper for Valentine’s Day this year. We’re not talking about reaching into the pocketbook, but digging deep into the heart. Bigger isn’t always better, but going above and beyond, making this day special for the one you love and doing your best is always worth the effort. Trust us, your significant other always knows if you’ve done your level best. And if this year you’re playing it solo, then treat yourself. You deserve it! Or if you go out as a gang, live it up. Valentine’s Day isn’t just about couples anymore. It’s about love … love for significant others, love for friends and love for yourself. You don’t have to do the usual thing either. Sure, candy and flowers are nice. But there are plenty of other options you can choose from, all centered in the Tulsa area.
34 February 2016
To the Guys
Let’s face it. There are a lot of expectations for Valentine’s Day. But don’t let that get you down. Instead, level up the excitement with some heartfelt romance. Maybe this year you take the time to start some “new love resolutions” and share them with your honey over dinner. What would the new you
look like in your romance? There’s at least one person in the relationship who knows what that would look like, hopefully two. But guys, if you can’t think of a way to improve your affections, sincerely ask and you’ll get a response, trust us. Include those loving suggestions in your “new love resolutions,” and you’ll score points, at least for listening.

To the Girls
Whatever you decide, commit to being the love you want your loved one to experience and do it the rest of the year. Heck, start your fiscal year of love Feb. 14 and don’t look back for another 12 months.
In all seriousness, there’s only one Valentine’s Day a year. Do not let it sneak up on you. If you’re looking for ideas you can easily make happen in T-town, consider planning one of these special moments for your lover:
Take your love to get a massage. Serenade them in front of a crowd of strangers at Western Country Diner. Do yoga with her (or him) at Salt or Be Love. Write your love a note every day leading up to Valentine’s and even a few more afterward. Do everything and more than they would expect for Valentine’s Day and then fix something they’ve been needing you to fix. Take a walk with your special someone in Oxley Nature Center and get hot chocolate afterward at Antoinette’s. Rent a hotel room. Send the children to your grandma’s.
Going Solo
As a culture, we are so used to doing things in groups or pairs that the idea of going out alone can seem intimidating or somehow abnormal. But no way! Some of our best memories can come from times spent with me, myself, and I, treating ourselves like royalty.
Get a massage. Is there any better way to indulge yourself and your body? A good massage will leave you feeling relaxed, healthy and happy. Try a new massage therapist or spa by treating yourself to a Living Social or Groupon deal. It saves you about half the price.
A solo dinner at Memories of Japan in Broken Arrow is special, to say the least. And if you’ve never been to Oliveto on 89th and Memorial, treating yourself to their cuisine is like having a tiny bit of Tuscany all to yourself. Both of these places have exceptional waitstaff.
Movie-going can be an amazing solo experience. No negotiating over seats, no guilt for going off your diet with the supersize popcorn, no shame for seeing the movie everyone else is dissing.
36 February 2016
Why let your significant other always plan the thing you do for Valentine’s Day? Surprise them and take the reins. Guys like to be treated specially, just as girls do. Variety is the spice of life, and a little spice in your romance goes a long way. So mix it up and make the plans for a change. If you want to open up new possibilities in your love life, why not start with something simple — explore a new area of the city. As Tulsa grows, new hangouts are popping up all over the place. What better way to break up the routine with your lover than Feb. 14? Think of it as a local, inexpensive adventure.
How about making a book basket with your lover’s favorites from Barnes & Noble’s sales rack or Fine Books inside the Promenade Mall. Or go cheaper by visiting Gardner’s on Mingo, Oaktree on 15th Street, or one of our favorite used book spots on Memorial — the Eastside Emporium. Why not mix it up even more? Get active! Dinner is great, but restaurants are crowded on Valentine’s Day. Make your own fun with a picnic basket dinner and a trip to Mohawk Park or Woodward Park. If it’s too chilly outside, bring the picnic inside at a local café or watering hole. Sneak a bottle of wine into the movie theater or spread your picnic blanket out on the living room floor and be spontaneous.
For example, go to The East Village Bohemian Pizzeria on 3rd Street, downtown, and then pop across the street to Hodges Bend’s espresso bar for a pour over double shot, latte, or a Bombay Government Punch for two! Here’s another idea: skip dinner altogether and treat your loveydovey to some decadent sweets. Go ahead and be bad. There are some fabulous places to get desserts all over Green Country. Indulge in chocolate and coffee at Antoinette’s or dipped strawberries and wine at the Melting Pot. While you’re out and about causing mischief like this, imagine what could happen when you get home. Be inventive with your gifts. You have many options if you want to be creative. Edible Arrangements does fruit bouquets, while Cookiedoodle does cookie baskets. But you could also invent your own “bouquet” if you have time. Buy a tote bag and cover it with 918 buttons from Ida Red, The Indie Emporium or Decapolis.
With The Gang All your gal or guy pals could get together and do any of the aforementioned activities as a group. Or perhaps you can schedule in some bar hopping downtown. Head anywhere from the fabulous Hunt Club’s kitschy hunting décor and live music patio to Valkyrie Bar for some serious mixed drink specials. If your group is a bit more relaxed, book a trip to the Painted Lyon or Pinot’s Palette for art and wine.

Rules V-Day
g n i fi t
FOR
G
e all have someone we can never find a gift for, but what about the person we want to buy every gift for? Valentine’s Day is that random time of the year when you have an excuse to give a gift to the special someone you’ve been thinking about — your best friend, boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife. Although this would seemingly make picking a V-Day gift an easy task, you don’t want to scare off your significant other with an underpriced or overly valued present on Valentine’s Day. It’s not all flowers and candy — finding the right V-Day gift can be like trudging through a minefield of heart-shaped chocolate boxes and teddy bears. Because this holiday is so explicit, you are going to want to weigh your options and carefully decide on a gift that is meaningful, but not too mushy, intriguing, but not over-thetop, and heartfelt, but appropriate for your relationship status. Decide what category you and your Valentine fall into before you splurge this V-Day.
40 February 2016
Just because you’re single doesn’t mean you get V-Day off. Are you forgetting about all the people you love? This is where the small, sweet gifts come into play, and candy is one of the best to give to a friend on Valentine’s Day,
It’s not all hearts and candy. Buying Valentine’s Day gifts can be a minefield. So we’ve compiled great gift ideas for every relationship stage from platonic to the veterans. WRITTEN BY: Ryann Gordon
Platonic Presents especially one who’s spending their night solo. If you are also included in this category — even better, you can share it with them! Surprise your single friends with a group date, either a dinner and movie combo or even just a bottle
of wine for you to drown your sorrows in together. The friend dates work for both women and men, because who doesn’t enjoy a nice bottle of wine and love-hating with their friends? If you’re too much of
a bro for the wine, swap for whiskey and some cards. Or do the dinner and movie date, and consider yourself lucky to be going with all guys or girls, because you won’t have to compromise on the film. The ladies can share tissues and watch their sappy chick flicks while the dudes take on the most action-packed movie they can find. And don’t forget to include mom in this category, whether she has a Valentine or not. Either take her to dinner and a movie, or if she’s already taken, surprise her with a heartfelt gift, a candle, roses, spa treatment or all of the above.
meaningful
Just Started Dating Perhaps the most difficult stage to gift for — the blooming relationship. Have you only been dating for a few months? Weeks? Are you just “talking” and not yet an item? Well, don’t think you’re getting out of this V-Day so easy, especially for you guys, because skipping or going too all-out for this holiday could either break or make a relationship. You cannot go wrong with dinner and a movie on Valentine’s Day, but don’t stop there. Do a little extra something for the person you care about and show them your spontaneous side.
Now, don’t go splurge on a $300 purse for a girl you just started dating, but think more along the lines of a decorative cupcake, lotion and body spray, or a bottle of wine for you guys to drink after dinner. For the ladies though, tread lightly in this category, because men tend to scare easily when things get too mushy. Go with a gift that doesn’t scream Valentine’s Day, like tickets to a game for your next date, a new tie or hat, or just some of his favorite candy — he will not be offended if you get him the biggest bag you can find.
This Ain’t Our First V-Day Once you’ve shared more than one Valentine’s Day together, it’s time to start putting some real thought into it. Instead of going to your favorite restaurant that the two of you visit every week, make a reservation somewhere both of you have been dying to try, or go all-out and surprise your partner with a fancy steak dinner at Mahogany’s. Start paying attention to the little things your loved one mentions, the clothes or accessories they want, coat or shoes they’ve been fawning over, or the belt, purse, wallet or perfume they need. Personalized items are the most
important part of gifting someone that you are serious about, because you don’t want to splurge on something that they don’t really want or need. Get your man a new pair of dress shoes to swap out with his old, worn-out ones, a new blazer or button-down and tie to wear to work, a watch or cologne, and most men freak over any type of new technology.
Picking gifts for women can be tricky though, so pay close attention to what she wants and ask her friends what they think. Whether it’s that new Michael Kors purse she’s been blabbing about or the ostrich feather jacket saved on her Amazon account, dig into some of that Christmas money and go all-out for the one you love — you may not have another holiday to randomly gift for a while.
Veteran Valentiners So, which Valentine’s Day is this? 5? 15? 30 or more? It may seem like it, or you and your spouse may have nearly forgotten about V-Day altogether. Well, make a change this year and take this holiday as an opportunity to add some spice back into your marriage and life. Whether you’re looking to rekindle the flame or just do something spontaneous, skip the flowers and chocolates (although
that could be a nice side-gift) and plan something awesome for you to do together — aside from dinner and a movie. Have the two of you always talked about going skiing or snorkeling? Buying a lake house? A puppy? Did your wife ever mention wanting to go on a train or a hot air balloon ride? What about your husband? Would he want to go skydiving? See the
Harlem Globetrotters or go to a Thunder game? This holiday is your excuse to spoil the one you love, so don’t let years of experience make you feel restricted to the V-Day conventions. Do something fun and exciting for your spouse. Scan your bucket lists and decide on what you want to mark off this year; if this starts a tradition, you could be marking off another next year and every Valentine’s Day after. Preview918.com 41

Let’sPraise Sandwich the
A
re you ready for an ode to that most classic of American food groups — the incomparable sandwich? It’s hard not to wax poetic on a meal so ubiquitous, you’ve eaten it since you were a toddler. From PB&J on white bread and hoagies with freshgrilled meats to turkey-avocado wraps to gourmet grilled cheese, the sandwich is a go-to that is hard to beat.
WRITTEN BY: Michele Chiappetta
Bellacino’s Pizza & Grinders
On this list, you’ll find everything from the basics to the truly unique, all delicious! So get your feed on and fall in love with the sandwich all over again.
9521 Riverside | Tulsa
Never heard of a grinder? Let me enlighten you. Generously stacked meats and cheeses are served in a fresh, warm Italian roll, garnished with lettuce and tomato. This Italian classic is so good, you’ll slap your mother to keep her from grabbing that second helping you’ve been eyeing. Bellacino’s uses 1950s family recipes, highquality ingredients and generous portions. Try their party grinder — an oversized sandwich that feeds several people. It makes casual events like a Super Bowl party a cinch.
Old School Bagel Cafe
6805 S. Yale | Tulsa 3723 S. Peoria | Tulsa
The only thing better than a New York-style bagel is a bagel sandwich. Old School Bagel Cafe makes tasty breakfast and lunch sandwiches. You can’t go wrong eating here. The staff is friendly, the bagels fresh. Breakfast sandwiches include PB&J, eggs, ham, lox, nutella and more. My favorite lunch option is the Q’s Pikes Peak — chicken, bacon, Swiss, ranch, lettuce, tomato and onion, but you can pick from several other choices or build your own sandwich.
Lassalle’s New Orleans Deli 601 S. Boston | Tulsa
If what you crave in a sandwich is Cajun fare, Lassalle’s downtown is a must-visit. The po’boys are served on fresh baked French bread, and you can select from many options — smoked turkey, fried shrimp, catfish, ham, or their famous roast beef made with slow roasted Black Angus. And yes, they have muffulettas — one with meat, and one all veggies. A stop here is the next best thing to a trip to the Central Grocery in NOLA. 48 February 2016
Oh, how we love ‘em stacked, wrapped or grilled. So we searched Green Country for the best and found the 20 tastiest places for subs, heroes, grinders, dagwoods, hoagies, doubledeckers and more.
The Hamlet
Cosmo Cafe & Bar 3334 S. Peoria | Tulsa
What’s better than a great sandwich, a mixed drink and free Wi-Fi? Cosmo on Brookside offers all three, making it a favorite for writers and college students as well as a great place to catch up with friends. Choose from a variety of hot or cold sandwiches. My favorite is their Thanksgiving, which you can order anytime, and it’s exactly what you think it is — smoked turkey, cream cheese, cranberry relish, hot stuffing and tomatoes.
9107 S. Sheridan | Tulsa
I had you at ham, didn’t I? The Hamlet offers terrific honey-kissed meat. Many people buy a whole ham here for special occasions, but maybe you didn’t realize that The Hamlet also has a deli with a lunch and dinner menu. Try their homemade ham salad, or taste their Sausalito sandwich, made with Sausalito turkey, jalapeno, havarti cheese, sweet Vidalia onion sauce and spicy mustard on jalapeno cornbread. They also have chicken wraps and burgers. Yum!
Jersey Mike’s Subs 8216 E. 71st St. | Tulsa 10912 S. Memorial Dr. | Tulsa 7526 S. Olympia Ave. | Tulsa
Jersey Mike’s is a cut above other franchises. They freshly slice or grill their ingredients and serve them up East Coast style, topping meats and cheeses with onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a signature blend of olive oil, red wine vinegar and spices. It’s so good! They also give back to the community—a Jersey Mike’s commitment. Good food, good charity, good place to visit!

Queenie’s Cafe and Bakery
1834 Utica Square | Tulsa
This is a cute little eatery in the heart of Utica Square. In nice weather, you can eat at their sidewalk tables for a casual, fun meal. Queenie’s is known for their grilled cheese options, which include bacon, turkey, tomato, onion or green chili. I also love their egg salad. They’ve got a yummy grilled ham and cheese. For breakfast, try their egg sandwich with bacon, lettuce and tomato, served with home fries. The coffee is great, too.
Lambrusco’z Deli 1344 E. 41st St. | Tulsa Blue Dome Market at 2nd and Detroit | Tulsa
Trenchers Delicatessen
2602 S. Harvard | Tulsa
Trenchers roasts and smokes all of their deli meats, and they make their own breads and condiments. It’s sandwich heaven. Mix and match to create the sandwich of your choice, or order off the menu. Trenchers offers a hot pastrami on rye with grain mustard — if you’ve never had this deli delight before, try it. It’s amazing. Or go with The Trencher — winebraised pork shoulder and grain mustard served on toasted, housemade Italian bread.
Phat Philly’s Cheesesteaks 1305 S. Peoria | Tulsa
The cheesesteak! This classic blend of steak, grilled onions, peppers and cheese is so famous, you can’t visit Philadelphia without eating one. No need to travel, though, with Phat Philly’s right here. In addition to the classic cheesesteak, you can upgrade with add-ons like mushrooms, jalapeno, olives, bacon, chili and more. Swap out the steak for chicken. Get the breakfast version with eggs and sausage. Or get the veggie version. Lots of options here.
50 February 2016
Lambrusco’z Deli serves up delicious deli items in both Brookside and the Blue Dome District. They make everything from scratch and it shows; this deli overflows with customers. You’ll love the generous portions and the fresh taste of their food. My favorite sandwich is the Old Fashioned RB/R — Boar’s Head roast beef with horsey mayo, provolone cheese, red onion, lettuce and tomato on marbled rye. While you wait, have fun perusing their kitschy retail products.
The Wild Fork 1820 Utica Square | Tulsa
A Utica Square favorite with a decidedly artisan flair, The Wild Fork is known for clever cuisine and beautiful interior and patio dining areas. For breakfast, try their Wild Fork BLT — apple wood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato and chipotle aioli, with your choice of health-nut toast or grilled sourdough. For lunch, you’ve got to taste the Southern Five Spice Catfish Sandwich, which is grilled or fried on a French roll with lettuce, tomato and chipotle aioli. It’s good stuff.
Juniper 324 E. 3rd St. | Tulsa
Juniper’s claim to fame is their blend of classic French and modern American cuisines. Their menu changes with the seasons and is sourced locally. And the lunch menu offers some unique options — like the duck confit and Gruyere, served with arugula and smoked cranberry apple chutney on ciabatta, and the truffled egg salad, made with housemade pickles, scissortail arugula and shaved red onion. Plates are presented with artisan appeal, and you can supplement your order with a drink mixed at their fully stocked bar.

The Tavern
201 N. Main | Tulsa
The Tavern is a classic neighborhood pub with a modern twist. A great spot to grab lunch downtown, their menu features local, seasonal ingredients. Try the Tavern Club sandwich, served on a house-baked honey wheat bread. Or go for broke and get the PBLFGT — pork belly takes the place of bacon and is served with lettuce, fried green tomato and maple peppercorn mayo. They also offer grown-up grilled cheese with tomato bisque to warm you up on cold, windy winter days. Preview918.com 51

f there’s one thing that we all share, it is the common goal of getting fit and staying that way. Not all of us, though, have the means to get a gym membership or pay for workout classes throughout the week. Stream and Steam
I mean. Start garage saling and Wal-Mart bin shopping or just splurge for once on a video you’ve been wanting — what’s $15 for months of great workouts? And check your local library for fitness DVDs to rent and try new exercises without wasting a single dime.
Think Outside the Box
Whether you’re a yogi, crossfitter, into Zumba, Insanity, Pilates, strength or core training, all you have to do is one Google search to get ready to sweat. Aside from YouTube, where you can find millions of free tutorials for all kinds of workouts also browse through some websites targeted toward free exercise. MyYogaWorks has a database of videos uploaded by yoga instructors, and SparkPeople is an online health community where you can find links for various exercise regimes. And the list goes on. Aside from fitnessspecific websites, most streaming sites have workout channels as well. Hulu’s fitness channels range from True Beginner (for those who are easing their way into the workout grind) to Exercise TV, Cardio Sculpt (kickboxing training), Gaiam Pilates and My Yoga Classes. If you don’t have a streaming port, do things the old fashioned way and stock up on some workout tapes … discs,
it’s a resistance band, kettlebell, stability ball or step bench. Or perhaps it’s the stability ball you choose for working out your core. With any of these and a resistance band for butt, leg and arm workouts, it’s hard to think why you’d ever leave your home to exercise.
Stock Up Your Gym Rather than paying by the month for access to a gym, spend half of that money on new toys to add to your workout arena. Nothing gets you more motivated to work out than something new to play with, whether it be a new DVD or Blu-ray to try out, some fresh exercise gear or new equipment for your personal gym. Maybe it’s a new pair of yoga pants, which you can find for a low price in the fitness section in Plato’s Closet, or a running jacket to get you moving on a cold day. Or maybe
Who says that working out has to involve weights, sweat and money? Forget about what you think exercise looks like and start considering your method of working out in new areas of your world. Rather than spending money on workout equipment, use the objects and furniture you have at your house in their place. Stairs are an automatic exercise machine, and the edge of your counters and bed work great as a bench for doing pushups, hip thrusts and glute bridges. Aside from this, one of the easiest ways to start getting yourself moving is by breaking the habit of laziness — in every aspect of your life. Start multitasking — park farther away from the store, do crunches while you read, squats during commercial breaks, or my personal favorite, leg lifts while you’re bored at work. Vow to quit being idle and start using your free time for something
If working out around the house is not enough for you, there are places you can go for cheap and even free fitness. There are a number of community centers in the Tulsa area that have open gyms and a variation of lowpriced classes, sports leagues and more. Hicks, Whiteside, Reed and Lacy Park Community Centers in Tulsa offer free gym access to the public, as well as Nienhuis Park and Central Park Community Centers in Broken Arrow. Each of these facilities boasts a number of fitness classes for adults and children at less than $25 a month, from interval training to Zumba, yoga, taekwondo, pickleball and more, with drop-in rates of $5 or less. Valor Strength and Fitness is one gym dedicated to our cause, with an income-based scale for membership fees, starting at free for those who make under $40,000 yearly. Anytime Fitness — with locations in Broken Arrow, Sapulpa, Sand Springs, and Owasso — has dues that are generally less than the average price of a haircut and style. Fitness on the Green has free yoga at Fly Loft on Mondays at 5:30 p.m., and many yoga studios around town also offer free classes throughout the week. The Yoga Room holds donation classes on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Mondays at noon and Saturdays at 11 a.m., Be Love has one at both locations on Fridays at 5:30 p.m., Inner Peace Yoga at 7 a.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and Subtle Breath Yoga has a free meditation MondayFriday at 5:30 a.m. Combine a free class or two with your at-home workout routine and you’ll be on your way to physical, and financial, greatness. Furry From fox fur to faux fur, ostrich feathers, “fauxthers” and everything in between, there is no better way to spruce up an outfit and stay warm than to be wrapped in the most fabulous of all cold-weather staples.

WRITTEN BY: Ryann Gordon
s the most elegant, glamorous, and not to mention fuzzy fashion trend to date, fur continues to stand as a staple of luxury and undeniable comfort in the cold. Since our ancient ancestors draped themselves in the hides of animals they killed for warmth, fur has prevailed through time and centuries of fashion as perhaps the most highly regarded and valued of all clothing materials. Whether it is on your hands, feet, head or back, there is just something about a dramatic fur piece that draws every eye in the room and screams extravagance. From fox fur to faux fur, ostrich feathers, “fauxthers” and everything in between, there is no better way to spruce up an outfit and stay warm for this final, cold month of February than to be wrapped in the most fabulous of all winter staples.
It doesn’t have to be real fur either. Faux fur has become so well made that most are nearly identical to and just as appealing as real fur. Although the animal hide is where this trend originated, you’re probably not going to find much real fur at an affordable price unless you’re at an estate sale or a thrift store. Faux fur has become somewhat of a trend itself in the fashion world, where
many designers have vowed to not use real animals for their products. Stores like Forever 21 sell ridiculously cheap faux fur garments and accessories. Designers like Michael Kors, Jean Paul Gaultier and Jeremy Scott of Moschino have turned fur into a runway star over the course of recent seasons, rebranding this holdover from the country club 1950s as young, hip,

fashion-forward and even environmentally sustainable. While I would highly discourage anyone to wear a rabbit fur shirt of any sort, the trend of faux fur has opened the doors to wearing fur-like, fluffy clothing articles. Ease your way into this trend with a big, cozy (and very fake-looking) faux fur sweater — you’ll be so comfy and cute you’ll be dying for more. Go with fuzzy ear warmers, gloves, socks or all of the above, but forget what is and isn’t real fur and save your money for those exceptional flea market finds, especially on larger pieces like a coat. By far the warmest and probably the sassiest addition to any outfit, the fur coat can add a little flair to your getup. Pair one of your cute, party dresses with heeled booties and a double layer of nude or colored tights; throw a fluffy coat on over it and you could walk from Blue Dome to Brady completely unscathed by the cold. If the coat is too much, then swap for a vest and a long-sleeved dress instead, and watch eyes widen as you walk into the room. And for the nights when you need a particular level of class, pair your ensemble with a fur shawl for a timeless, dignified look. 60 February 2016
‘‘
Rather than jumping straight into this trend with a loud fur jacket, you can start with a smaller touch of fluff and accessorize. Furry purses, pompom keychains, fuzzy gloves, scarves and hats — fur and faux fur accessories are a fabulous way to turn your plain winter closet of peacoats and booties into any ice princess’s fantasy. And nothing says queen of the north like an extravagant fur crown, otherwise known as a fur hat. The absolute image of decadence, this is another staple that has survived centuries in the fashion world, warming heads somewhat more than needed. This Russianinspired look is a fun way to add a little spunk to your getup, but you can also opt for a less dramatic head wrap and go with the furry earmuffs or warmers.
The fur hat can be a big step for someone who’s new to the fur game, so why not start with something a bit simpler and just as lovely. Move down a few inches and wrap your neck in a blanket of fuzziness, because fur scarves are going to be your new best friend this winter. This is the perfect accessory to wear with your bland, long-sleeved shirt and jeans, since you won’t have to take it off
inside. You can do a thin, fuzzy neck wrap or a long, fur-covered scarf like you can find at Ann Taylor in Utica Square; pull out a little bit of fluff once you put on your coat and just wait for the big reveal when you get to where you’re going and show off your secret fashion weapon. Fur goes well on accessories for most parts of the body, from the head and neck to the hands and even the feet. The fur-lined glove is a cute, simple way to bring a little pizzazz into your coat-covered ensemble, so find a warm pair and stuff them in the pockets of your favorite babydoll peacoat for daily warmth and style. Pair your fluffy gloves with a pair of fur boot liners, or better yet, boots covered with fur, and put some sass in your step for the remainder of winter. Tread lightly with any sort of furry shoe, though, because you don’t want to end up looking like a raver in furry legwarmers. Go with the fur boots or the fluffy coat, the scarf or the hat, the real or faux fur, but do keep your fur pieces to a minimum of one or two an outfit. Don’t commit overkill, and you will look and feel like a snow bunny — not the Abominable Snowman.

WRITTEN BY: Richard Linihan
Ease up on the pedal there, lead foot — you don’t want to race past this opportunity if you’re an auto enthusiast. Four-wheel fantasies could come true for you at Darryl Starbird’s National Rod & Custom Car Show.
D
arryl Starbird’s National Rod & Custom Car Show is almost as old as the very first kid to ever draw a Rat Fink hot rod on his school writing tablet. These days, many may be cutting and pasting pictures on an Apple tablet instead, but the trend of dreaming about cars seems like it will never end and the car show has never been more popular.
creations (some so unique they aren’t even named yet) will be on display in the Midwest’s largest car show. To think this all started as an idea of a few friends and relatives getting together to brag about their custom made cars is like saying the NFL got started because of the Kennedys’ backyard football games when John F. was in office in the early 1960s. What is wild is that it continues to thrive like a beast out of control. Starbird himself was responsible for many of the championship hot rods for half a century before handing the show over to two of his children — Cliff and Cristy — to continue the legacy. And they were with their dad every step of the way as this show was taken from infancy to legendary status. Cristy’s son, Bryce Bledsoe, also is involved as a co-producer. Starbird is known for his innovative and futuristic space-age car designs, often featuring bubble tops, including the Predicta, Electra, Cosma Ray, Big T and Lil Coffin. Starbird currently owns and operates Darryl Starbird’s National Rod & Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum in Afton, Okla., which features many of his cars as well as other notable examples from the history of custom car and hot rod culture. A notable car in the museum is the Reactor Mach II that appeared on multiple television programs.
This year’s event, happening 52 years from its birth, is expected to draw more people than ants to a picnic over Feb. 19-21 at Tulsa’s Expo Square.
It’s amazing that fresh ideas and creativity have continued to fuel the heartbeat of the show more than 50 years later, but they do. So much so, that promoters of the show are already talking about the next 60 years.
It is a spectacular sight to see. In fact, the shine off all that chrome would have to be registered with the FAA if not for the roof on the River Spirit Building. Some say the sun refuses to shine on the days of the show because of envy. More than 1,000 automobiles, crazy cars and
When it first started in 1964, a gallon of gas cost 30 cents, the average cost of a new house was about $13,000, a ticket to the movies was $1.25, and this new band called The Beatles had just come out with a catchy little tune called “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Preview918.com 63

At the time, Starbird was living at Grand Lake, and in his wizardry of an imagination, thought Tulsa would be a great place to draw car enthusiasts from all over the country to a show like no other. And he was right. “We get about 1,000 cars every year and they virtually fill about a 450,000-square foot area at Expo Square,” he says. “What’s great is the growth of this show from the ‘60s to now. We still have some of the most creative and innovative classic cars and custom cars, but we also have expanded to where it’s not just about cars anymore. We have something for everyone from 5 years old to 95,” says Bledsoe.
BEST FAN SHOP IN TULSA!
“Look at Darryl last year. My grandfather was chopping a car over a three-day period at the show, and people just loved that. We also have a smaller car show outdoors called the Cool Car Corral out near the Golden Driller. We have the Rockin’ Billy Bash downstairs with cars not on the main floor upstairs. We have mini-bike drag races, a demolition derby, and possibly tractor pulls and fire hoop stunts. Those action events will be held in the A&N Trailer Parts Action Arena in the building. There are bands playing all three days, and there is a pinup girl contest. The Flaunt Girls from truTV will be there as they were last year. The whole three days is just a huge celebration of family entertainment.” If that’s not enough to get your engine revving, there will also be a moustache and beard contest and a tattoo artist at the event. And if you’re feeling charitable, save a life while you’re at the show by giving blood. The show will include a drive with the Oklahoma Blood Institute. You can get all access passes to upstairs, downstairs and outdoor car shows for $20 for adults and $10 for juniors. If you wait to get them at the door, it will cost $50 for adults and $25 for juniors. If you just want to gain access to the Rockin’ Billy Bash downstairs, it’s $15 for adults and $5 for juniors. But if you have Billy Bash Only tickets and get there and decide you really would like to go upstairs to the main floor, you can get an upgrade for only another $10. The Go for Gold Fine Nine Award is the top car of the entire show; it carries a $10,000 cash prize and is one of the top trophies of its kind in the country. Last year, Keith Dean took it home with his custom-made El Camino. “It was built really neat,” says Bledsoe. “It was an El Camino but all the panels were like ’59 Cadillac, I believe.” Don’t think for a second that Darryl wasn’t there to witness that, and he is expected to be there again this year. He might be 85 or so, but you never lose the joy of your first love.

Fall in love again … with the great outdoors. It’s as easy as a walk in Mohawk Park and a visit to the Oxley Nature Center.
oo many of us busy ourselves through life, trying to fill voids that maybe only a walk in nature can remedy. Bundle up and visit the Oxley Nature Center. It’s one of Tulsa’s most underrated excursions, and it offers a surprising amount of activity planned during this winter month of love. I think you’ll be surprised. Tucked inside Tulsa’s beautiful Mohawk Park, Oxley Nature Center is easy to find. Simply follow the signs to the 804 secluded acres, reserved exclusively for bird watching, hiking and investigating prairie plants, aquatic birds and animals. There are no off-road vehicles, bicycles or horses allowed, so you are free to roam and explore on foot. When I call Oxley an excursion, I mean it’s an escape. An escape to the past, when cars, planes, sidewalks, streets and skyscrapers hadn’t even been invented yet. A visit here and you may just catch a glimpse of your childhood, when “going outside to play” was actually a thing children looked forward to. Each of the nearly 9 miles of trails is unique and a slightly different experience from the next. Among my favorites would be the Red Fox

trail. It’s easiest to access from the Interpretive Building and connects to many other cool trails. You’re likely to see or hear creatures moving around. I once spied half a dozen deer from this trail. I also enjoy Bird Creek. It’s a bit more of a hike, but one day I stood just a few feet away from an armadillo, observing her for about 15 minutes. Her thick, ridged, helmet-like body was sort of wobbling slightly back and forth. She was rooting around in the earth when she lifted her snout, peered at me for a second, then went about her business. It was truly memorable. An experience like that reminds me we aren’t living in this world alone. We have a responsibility to keep from taking too much wildlife away from animals like that, which haven’t learned to live in houses and drive cars on paved streets. If you take Blackbird Marsh trail, you’ll come upon a 600-foot boardwalk, right in the middle of the 3-acre marsh. You may not actually see the beaver that lives there, but you’ll see evidence of his presence if you look closely. Trees jut up from the water, chewed at the top like pencils. A squirrel didn’t do that. Gently touch the cattails as you walk by, and for some of us, it takes us back to that more simple time.
Touch the trees. See the animals. Hear the birds. Smell the sweet wildflowers.
In the marsh, or not very far from there at Sherry Lake, you can see the herons, either the yellow or black-crowned herons. Maybe you’ll catch a great blue heron taking flight. They’re more common in Oklahoma than you might think. Their slow, majestic movement in the air, with that striking, expansive wingspan, hearkens back to prehistoric days. Actually, over 200 kinds of birds can be spotted at Oxley throughout the year, and more than you could imagine during the winter months too. Giant cottonwoods, sycamores, oaks, pecans, hackberries and a host of other smaller trees and shrubs can be studied here. And as early as February, you sometimes start to see colorful wildflowers popping up over the expansive meadows. The Oxley-Yetter Interpretive Building is open all year if you need a break from the cold. Peruse all kinds of nature items inside the Nature Store, many of which pertain directly to Oklahoma and its wildlife. Books on birds and a particularly interesting audio book called A Guide to Night Sounds, designed for children and young adults, explores all the sounds you might hear at night. Meet some of the friendly staff in the Interpretive Building. They’ll get your hands on a map of the trails and tell you everything about exploring them. There are interactive, hands-on exhibits to experience inside as well. My favorite is the bee house that connects with the outside. This one’s not so hands-on, but it’s fun. The bees zoom in and out through a seethrough tube. They raise their young and make honey right there inside the exhibit. Watch these beautiful humming pollinators as long as you like.

et’s be honest here. There’s a reason it’s a joy to receive chocolate. Chocolate is delightfully good. Hello. Serotonin. Does it not give us that perfectly timed, blissful shot of a sugar and caffeine buzz? And to throw another neurotransmitter at you, the anandamide in chocolate works much the way it does with THC … it cuts a
little of the “edge” off. A journal of medicine in 2012 published a study saying there was a “surprisingly powerful correlation” between chocolaty goodness and winning the Nobel Prize, for goodness sake. Need I say more? Maybe one more thing. Love drug. Americans’ love affair with chocolate is no secret: the average adult consumes 11.7 pounds of the sweet stuff ev-
ery year. While candy bars are easy to find in convenience stores and vending machines, many shops throughout the area offer more luxurious alternatives. Whether you’re looking for your favorite chocolate treat, or want to tempt your taste buds with something new and exciting, these spots are stocked with irresistible confections that will satisfy your cravings.

WRITTEN BY: Maria Weller PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Bill Roper on the special. As the name suggests, Cookiedoodle’s history was built on the soft, sweet foundation of shortbread cookies that are of course decorated in adorable detail. Owner, Bernadette Feickert, began baking cookies at her restaurant in Muskogee. “People

like to hear the story about starting off in the kitchen at home, but I always had a commercial kitchen,” Feickert says. Having a number of years as a pastry chef under her belt, it would seem that Feickert was almost fated to make Cookiedoodle happen.

odness What started off as a kind of pet project quickly turned into a legitimate business venture. As Feickert and her spin on the classic decorated cookie became renowned in the Jenks area, she decided it was time to set up shop. Or rather a new shop that was more accessible to her ever-increasing Tulsa clientele.
One of the main reasons Feickert’s cookies received such acclaim is the unique recipe used. Rather than having a hard sugar dough with royal frosting that hardens completely, Feickert and her team use an almond glaze and finish their special recipe with buttercream frosting for soft and delicious iced shortbread cookies. These yummy cookies end up with a more cake-like texture that is not very common when it comes to decorated cookies. After attaining the Cookiedoodle location, Feickert and her crew began to make a name for Cookiedoodle. She and her staff have developed recipes for other cookies and treats with a little help from the
Internet, and a lot of baking knowhow. Since all of her staff are more than competent, she does not feel that a formal culinary education is necessary. “People will bring me portfolios of things they’ve created at home. That’s what we look for and I think it’s really encouraging to the average person,” Feickert says of her staff. And her instincts about her employees as well as the cookies has been spot on, since they had to upgrade to a larger location just one short year after opening.
In addition to the growth of the square footage, the menu offerings also expanded. To help keep sales at a more consistent level during the slower summer months, Feickert added gelato to the menu. The various flavors of the cool, sweet treat was a hit during the more sweltering months. The surprising amount of foot traffic made it an especially smart addition. Also joining the cookie lineup is the vast selection of the oh-so-amazing gourmet cookies. Their unique names
and flavors will pique your interest, their artful look will make your mouth water, and each of their individual sweet flavors will leave you wanting more. Because, when you hear about a French toast, pecan pie or molten lava cookie, how can you possibly resist?
“We found a recipe for a pecan cookie, but it didn’t have the pie filling on top. We added that to make it our own,” Feickert says of the pecan pie cookie. With a very capable staff keeping their eyes and ears open to what’s trending in the culinary world, you are more than likely to run into some new and delicious flavors. You can also find a good assortment of cupcakes and cake balls gracing those glass shelves Preview918.com 73

that are every bit as scrumptious as they are aesthetically pleasing. Such timehonored favorites as chocolate, strawberry and vanilla can be found. They are also joined by some more modern favorites as well, such as red velvet and birthday cake, just to name a couple. Each cupcake is a miniature monument to the best of baking and is iced and garnished accordingly, whether it be with sprinkles or miniature Oreos. And though they are not regularly kept in store, Cookiedoodle has also perfected the baking and decorating of cakes. These beauties can be decorated more or less however your heart or sweet tooth desires, ranging from whimsical to bridal — and everything 74 February 2016
in between — but always ending as a true work of edible art. One request was for a cake that resembled a large pot of succulents. That’s right. A pot of pointy, drought resistant plants. Feickert’s team succeeded spectacularly. They even managed to make every part of the cake edible, down to the rocks decorating this unusual flowerbed. Rock candy, buttercream icing and fondant are what made this sweet dream a reality. Feickert notes that, though it has a beautiful, smooth appearance that is hard to replicate with more traditional types of icing, more than a few people do not care for the taste of fondant. Here, too, Feickert and her
band of merry bakers came to the rescue by incorporating melted marshmallow to produce their special fondant. Their cake master has even acquired the skill of making their signature buttercream frosting appear as smooth as though it were fondant. With the proper notice, usually at least a week, Cookiedoodle can prepare nearly any style or size of cake and at an extremely competitive price. This even includes wedding and groom cakes. In Tulsa, that niche market has only had two or three options from which to choose in the past. But Feickert’s next goal is to become another contender with her cakes, and if
her success with cake is anything like it was with cookies, she will most definitely achieve it. And speaking of love, we can’t forget the holiday for which this mini-month is known. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the day that Hallmark commercialized than by turning your back on greeting cards and instead biting
into a delicious, personalized cookie of love? Themed cookie bouquets or even individual cookies are available to impress your significant other. And personalizing a decorated cookie

Pleasures
ook lovers know they can find hidden treasures at a used bookstore. At Gardner’s you’ll find a true hidden treasure by turning left, passing aisles of books, toys and trinkets and proceeding to RoseRock Cafe and Bakery, where you’ll have a hard time choosing a favorite treat. You pass through a stone archway into a long, warmly lit space filled with the scent of fresh food. The booths give the feel of an old-time diner, the brick walls the sense of the building’s age. The decor is quaint and homey with posters on the wall and slogans painted on the windows while potted plants on the sill take advantage of the sunlight. Near the register sits a brightly lit pastry case

filled with luscious cookies, muffins, cakes and pastries that suggest you should try eating your dessert first. RoseRock Cafe and Bakery is the result of years of dreaming by owner Scott Allen and his mother Carolyn McLellen. “My first job at age 16 was in food service,” Allen says, “so I’ve been in the business 19 years.” McLellen is a retired Army sergeant first class. “I retired from the army, served in the reserves and went on to retire from the Department of Defense,” she explains. “And now I’m spending my retirement here. I enjoy working with my son, helping him fulfill his dream.”
‘‘
RoseRock Cafe has a monthly special, and February’s special will be the flavorful Spice Burger.
The space in Gardner’s was available when Allen went looking for a location. “Books and coffee go together,” says Allen, “so, it seemed like a good fit. Besides, the space came with this nice espresso machine. It was made in Italy. It’s the Ferrari of coffee machines.” RoseRock’s coffee menu makes great use of the espresso machine. You can order anything from a simple cup of the coffee of the day to more complex confections like the Jungle Mocha Madness made with chocolate sauce, espresso, caramel, vanilla, coconut, banana and chocolate milk. RoseRock Cafe offers cold drinks as well. Be sure to try an Italian soda, a fruit smoothie or one of their Big Train Shakes. The full range of mochas, lattes, hot chocolates, canned pops and bottle drinks is available all day.
or sausage. McLellan favors the pancakes or maybe the waffles. “They’re made from scratch,” she explains. “It takes longer, but we prefer the quality.” The biscuits and gravy, only available on Saturdays, are another popular choice: thick buttery biscuits served with creamy gravy with eggs and bacon or sausage on the side. For lunch, McLellan recommends the chili, made in-house, while Allen suggests you try the fish basket. They both agree that everyone should try the four cheese macaroni. “It takes an hour to make,”
McLellan says. “A dedicated hour,” adds Allen. “She can’t do anything else while working on it.” The side dish is served in a ceramic crock and loaded with smoked Gouda, cheddar, Swiss and Parmesan cheese, topped with panko bread crumbs and melted cheese on top.
‘‘
Despite those recommendations, I arrived at RoseRock on a Saturday morning with one goal in mind: the Reuben. “I know a guy who relocated to Oklahoma from New York,” Allen says. “He drives two hours for this sandwich. He says it’s better than he ever got in New York.” I ordered

the sandwich and a side of the four-cheese macaroni. The waitress was friendly and helpful, greeting me as if we were old friends. She heartily approved my choices.
‘‘
We named the place for Oklahoma’s state rock, because rocks are permanent and we wanted something that shows our pride in our state.
‘‘
I admit I was skeptical. The Reuben is my favorite sandwich, but it’s hard to find one done right anywhere but the East Coast. The sandwich was beautiful: toasted marbled rye, a bit of sauce dribbling out, a thick layer of corned beef with melted Swiss and garnished with an olive. The toasted bread crunched lightly and held up nicely to the filling. The flavors were balanced beautifully. The sauerkraut added just enough tart, the dressing just the right amount of sweet. It was indeed a very good Reuben. The four-cheese macaroni is rich, smooth and creamy, with real cheese flavor. The macaroni was perfectly cooked, not at all mushy, and the serving was generous enough to share. I finished off my meal by inviting the server to bring me whatever she recommended for dessert. While waiting, I sampled the tomato-basil bread on my companion’s sandwich, which was delightful with

a light texture and with the entire flavor I’d hoped for. Then I snuck a bite of her extremely tasty pasta salad, made with a bright and flavorful dressing. The apple turnover presented to me was big enough to share, with a flaky crust browned on the edges and sprinkled with large crystals of sugar. The buttery pastry perfectly complemented the warm, sweet cinnamon apples inside. Allen and McLellen have been working together on this dream since they took a cake decorating class together and decided to open a bakery. “We make as much as we can in-house,” says McLellen. “I make the chili and the chicken, tuna, pasta, potato and egg salads by hand, from scratch, with fresh ingredients.” “We named the place for Oklahoma’s state rock,”
Allen says, “because rocks are permanent and we wanted something that shows our pride in our state. We’re Chickasaw Indians, born and raised in Oklahoma. We try to support local business as much as possible.” To meet that goal, RoseRock Cafe offers Wacky Jammerz jams and jellies, Blue Moose Fudge and Chickasawmade Bedré chocolates for sale at the register. RoseRock Cafe has a monthly special, and February’s special will be the flavorful Spice Burger. “Warm up the love,” says Allen. “We picked that because spice is supposed to be an aphrodisiac. We also have some coffees with a Valentine theme, like Love Potion #9.” “I’ll be making a cinnamon pie,” McLellen adds. “It’s a rich, custardy pie loaded with cinnamon flavor.”

immy Blacketer, chef and co-owner of Waterfront Grill, has created a gem of a restaurant that overlooks Tulsa’s landmark Arkansas River. Along with business partners Jim Blacketer Sr., Jeb Blacketer and longtime friend Mike Banks, Blacketer also owns another Tulsa area favorite — Los Cabos Mexican Grill. Both restaurant concepts have enjoyed such strong success because of Blacketer’s diligence in crafting recipes and dishes to meet a wide range of taste preferences. From growing up in a family that loved to cook to traveling

all over the country in pursuit of hot new dishes, Blacketer’s culinary experience has taught him how to please his dinner guests. “My whole family has always been heavy into cooking,” Blacketer says. “One of my favorite memories is cooking with my grandparents. They had a huge influence on me as a child. I also grew up in the restaurant business, as my father started Steak and Ale in Tulsa. I was always hanging out in the kitchen, learning and observing. It was a lot of fun.” Blacketer is well seasoned in his recipe research, traveling
all over the big market areas like Los Angeles, Chicago and California to gain inspiration. “I like to see what’s popular in other places with large and diverse populations. You see what other chefs are doing and then put your own spin on it,” he says. All of the recipes at Waterfront Grill started from scratch, and Blacketer and his team made and remade every dish on the menu for over a full year until the taste of each one was perfected. “We thought Tulsa needed something different and unique, and therefore

we created a menu with something on it for everybody. We went through a lot of feedback and comment cards until we figured out exactly what people loved to eat,” Blacketer says.
experience. So we decided to go out and find someone who did,” Blacketer says. “We believe that if you don’t have the knowledge of a certain subject, you go out and find it in order to stay authentic.”
And when he says something for everybody, he means it. The menu at Waterfront Grill will please everyone from the most experienced foodie to the burger-and-beer guy at the table. All of the meats are prime grade and ground inhouse daily, making for filets that cut like butter and melt in your mouth. The burgers are made from a mouth-watering combination of bacon, sirloin and chuck.
And it’s exactly this authenticity that sets Waterfront Grill apart. Even though the menu is large and diverse, that doesn’t mean everything isn’t still made fresh and handcrafted daily. At Waterfront, ingenuity and integrity are the first ingredients that go into every dish. “We strive to be the best of the best. We stand behind fresh food, great service, and great atmosphere. If you have great people and product, you’re going to be all right,” Blacketer says.
And then there’s the meatloaf. As one of Blacketer’s favorite things to make with his grandparents when he was a child, the recipe has long been cherished. Waterfront’s meatloaf is a menu favorite made of ground chuck, onions, garlic and various other spices smothered in Marsala gravy. It’s the perfect comfort food to order on a cold day, or anytime you are feeling a bit nostalgic. Waterfront also serves a wide range of seafood options, including fresh Atlantic salmon, exotic mahi-mahi, pecan Parmesan crusted trout and a shrimp and scallop stack sautéed in lemon-cream sauce. And if you happen to prefer your fish raw rather than grilled, there’s a large authentic sushi selection on the menu as well. “We knew we wanted to offer sushi, but none of us really had the necessary
Everybody loves omelets, especially with prime rib. But the real fun starts with the make-your-own bloody mary bar. “Guests receive a glass pre-poured with vodka, and they are in charge from there. With toppings like stuffed jalapeno olives, two dozen different pickled condiments, applewood smoked bacon, celery, slim jims, ghost pepper sauce and atomic bomb sauce, adults become like children in a candy store,” he says.

But Waterfront is doing better than just all right. Blacketer and his crew have reined in a variety of awards for their hard work, including Hottest New Concept by the Oklahoma Restaurant Association. On top of a smattering of awards, excellent service and a menu that includes everything from salads, soups and grilled cheese to burgers, steaks, pork chops and fettuccini, Waterfront Grill is also just a lot of fun, especially for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. “During brunch, we offer a make-your-own omelet bar,” Blacketer says. “There are a variety of toppings including ham, chorizo, prime rib, garlic, onions, avocado, turkey, spinach, mushrooms, peppers, feta, pepper jack cheese and more.”

P
icture yourself having the worst moment of your life, and then turning it around into a endeavor that changes lives, brings people together, creates a fandom and gives back to local charities. Jill Donovan, owner of Tulsa’s Rustic Cuff, certainly can. Donovan’s showroom of handcrafted leather and metal cuffs, all designed to be unique gifts to yourself or others, has exploded into popularity so strong, it’s hard not to bump into someone in T-Town who is either unfamiliar with Rustic Cuff or isn’t wearing one right now. The vision of Rustic Cuff didn’t start the stereotypical way, with a desire to make and sell jewelry. It started, quite unexpectedly, with an empty closet — once filled with gifts Donovan had received. If you haven’t heard her story, you can read it in depth online, but the gist is this: she liked regifting and did it often (as many of us do). She also liked Oprah. She was on the Oprah show once. Just once. But after that, her life changed.
82 February 2016
While the national success of Rustic Cuff has brought fame and fortune Jill Donovan’s way, it’s the unique community and compassion associated with her philanthropy that makes these eyecatching, arm candy treats so sweet.
get to know Donovan explains it like this: “I’d wanted to go to the Oprah show and ended up as a guest on a show about etiquette. They wanted me to tell some funny stories about regifting.” And she did. But what she expected to be a lighthearted show turned into an on-air critique. Donovan left feeling so “foolish and silly,” as she describes it, that she emptied her regifting closet. It stayed empty a long time. Eventually though, Donovan grew determined to tackle that empty closet. “I took a sabbatical,” she says, “and decided to fill the closet with my own things.” She began teaching herself how to make cuff bracelets in the back bedroom of her house. She gave some away to friends, one of whom came back to her to say that other people were interested in buying them. Donovan says she didn’t want to sell them, but reluctantly gave it a try. And the rest is Tulsa history, because Rustic Cuff is growing like mad. The cuffs have been featured in magazines such as Elle, InStyle and People. Celebrities including Miranda Lambert, Giuliana Rancic, Kristin Chenoweth and others are buying them. National TV personalities from programs like The Today Show are wearing them. Even Oprah wore one on the cover of her magazine — ironically, as it turns out, it was a regifted cuff that Donovan had given to Gayle King. But that success — phenomenal as it is — is not what makes Donovan and Rustic Cuff unique. Rather, it’s the immense community of fans that has risen up around Rustic Cuff, making it a part of their lives and a part of how they show compassion to others. Many people have taken the story of Rustic Cuff ’s origins in regifting and turned it into an outreach, buying and then giving away the cuffs, many times anonymously. Donovan herself has seen the magic of giving more than receiving, and how people can be touched by receiving a simple
bracelet. “I filled the closet with cuffs and began to gift them to people as random acts of kindness,” she says. “I’d give a cuff to somebody, and then find out that they just found out they had breast cancer or something.” That sense of sharing has branched out and become a part of what Rustic Cuff fans do regularly for others. And Donovan is continually looking for ways to ramp up the charity events and give back. As an example, this Feb. 24, Rustic Cuff is sponsoring Project Cuffway, a special fashion event in which the all the outfits will be made out of or connected to cuffs. People have submitted all kinds of designs — bridal, children wear, swimsuits and more. The event will take place at the Cox Convention Center and will raise funds for a local charity.
If you ask around, you’re bound to quickly find someone who is a member of the Cuff of the Month Club. (Yes, I know several people who belong to it; one is my dental hygienist.) Like any other monthly club, members get something once a month, in this case an exclusive design that is
only available once and only to club members. The cost is $48 a month. Keep in mind, you’re not just getting a piece of jewelry; you’re supporting a local artisan who continues to give and give and give to those in need. “Stuff like that,” Donovan says, referring to fundraising and giveaways, “is what I love to do more than anything.” For that reason, she looks for ways to help local organizations that are either “struggling to get funds or that people don’t think about.” Over the holidays, Rustic Cuff invited fans to pay for cuffs that would go to the wives of local firemen and policemen — they raised enough to give a cuff to every single one in Tulsa. One of Donovan’s latest projects is tied to something fans often say about her cuffs — that they are as popular as beanie babies. “If you bring me 30 beanie babies,” she explains, “I’ll give you a cuff that’s never been seen before.” When she first made that offer, she acquired 1,500 of the stuffed toys in just 10 minutes. Now her goal is to collect 10,000 of the toys by Valentine’s Day and then donate
them to the Children’s Hospital at St. Francis and other area hospitals. “I’m so passionate about doing things locally,” she says. As for the actual jewelry, Donovan says you have to visit the showrooms to get a real feel for the magic of it all. They are designed to feel like you’re comfortably in her living room, complete with family pictures on the wall. She also says there will be a new showroom in midtown Tulsa, as well as a private showroom, both opening this spring. Keep an eye out for it, and definitely plan to buy at least one cuff. Until you get addicted to them, of course. It’s all for a good cause. “I didn’t intend to start this,” Donovan says. “But I’m overwhelmed with gratitude.”
