A week later, when Coda did PA for The Scen.e at PaIn Cove, Paul from Coda got a shock plus burns. Cause: faulty earthing of gear. last month, 'Motivqs played Scanps with Heaven 17 in support. I got two shocl<s & a eouple of H17 got the same. The earth on the plugs in the club was live so the outer casing of all the gear was li,ver even when j-t was switched off. The manager ealled in an electriclan immediately &, though it seemed ok' the band there the following week fared even worser with two of the band sustaining quite serlous shocks. The venue is safe now, but this bunch of accjdents goes as a severe warning. AI\{AYS CHECK YOIIR GEAR. The comnonest prcblem is with arnps. BAND PR.OFILE

Thei-r letter reads: A NEW OPERA is the band formed Dave ALbone & Andy Tril]-lson, formerl.y of Leeds band. THE VYE. Now, to add Quentin Churchill-on lead vocals (ex Media 3, etc.) the band had succeeded iin conpletely eonfusing everyone. once the cqfusion had been sorted out, the band coul-d concentrate on their music rather than thelr personnel, & the resul-t coufd be descr.ibed as odd. In-flu.enced heavlly by the new wave of progressive (not HM) rock, they are determlned to play music, synthesiser ,inf, luenced, that is not necessari,ly dreary., monotonous or nobotic. Producing

Severaf thousand bands have, J-n the past two or three years, reieased si-ngles on their own labels. theyrve spent hundreds of pounds apiece & most are djssatisfied with the end-ploduct. [n naay cases, it cones down to the studio engineer .not understanding trthat the band was after. 0n majcr labels this problero 1s nuch reduced by the presence of a produeer rrrhose job ls to br-idge this gap. fi1s fee.is a-small extra to the overall cost, yet very few independent bands use one. ]lence thig interview... lindsay ;tr'rost has been playing instruments since he wag eleven. Ee started on clarinet, moving on'to sax (wkr, ich dre played of-f, & on for s.ix months in The Natdonal Youth.Jazz }rchestra), then keyboards (on whi-ch dre'rs done session worh., composee & arranges), then druns (on which he'ts done a lot of gigging notably for The Out whose s,ingi-e 'Who is Irulocent' was released first on Rabid &-later on Virgin). fie was rousical director f,rr The Nrrthern Jazz Orchestra for two years & has done regular wrlting & arranging in his various ventures for the past few years Itrs worth adding that he didn't really want all- this gen. included in the article, but I felt it it was usefulto show that he''s not just some goon who fancles his chances as a self-appolnted record producer. Q. What brings you to leeds? f When 'The Out' folded a year ago I was invited up Eere by a friend rlhotd got a elub cabaret band. It!-ooked ,like the crhance of a regular wage, but didn''t vo:rk out. By Xmas, we'd split up. Q. So why protlucing? A. I d-id a .l-ot of sorti-ng out after that. i"d done Fome producring in Manche6ter & contacted Ric-Rac to see jlf there was a charce of work through thero. f d,id a deno there w:Lth Adrian Fuller & later did a record, ing vdth hin at September Sound which canre out as a singl-e. then J co-produced sone demos for Ihe Grun;bleweeds, doi,ng keyboards, drums & sax for thegl ae wel1. Siince then, f rve been i.n touch with 3ob Mil1er at Ram Studi-os & have done sorne work on his own nater.ial. Through hln, f hope to be doing more work at Bam. Q. What ,kind of producing are you after now? A. Any bands at all. lhe only proviso is that they must be comnitted to the'ir music. I enjoy nost styles - almost anything, in fact. Itrs just that f l-ike to get very j-nvolved & so need the same degree of commi-tment from the band. Q. llhat do you see as belng the role of a producer? A, Prinarily, he acts as a mlddleman between the band & the studio engineer. Bands usually come into the studio with a fairly cl-ear idea of the klnd of sound they want. fn fact, this is essential if they donrt want to waste time & money - thelr rnoney. But they have probably worked very hard on their material & as a result wil-1 have l-ost sorne of the freshness that was orlginalLy there. An outsider the producer - should be able to reinject sorne of that. Tn add-ition., a good producer can also help with the arrangements. IIe can tidy up the parts eepecially where each musician comes 1n & where he finlshes. lpd the band will probably not have a working knowLedge of the studio & the ava1lable effects, so he can help out here too. Flna1ly, ltrs worth pointing out that itts no longer good enough to come up with rough demos for najor record deals. f,he courpaniee want & expect demos of rnaster quality - ie ones froro whlch they could rnake an lroroecllate pressing. All their own bands will have used produoers & thls is what the 'newconers have to corapete w:ith.

IIt', eLU6M,,tll tr'rom Pontef, ract, the band are: Kevin T{ickling on voce, Len Barker on gtr, Steve tsrough on base & bkg vocs, Nigel Sykes on dms & Johnny Brown on gtr & bkg vocs. Describing their nusic as tfusion popt & their flnancial state as parlous, theyrre a new wave band who play nost of thejr glgs on the club circuit. Ir.d arranged to neet up with then after having heard & very nuch lired their demo cessette (see WCR B). Thcugh the band has nade quite a bj-t of money, it has al1 been ploughed back into the venture & so the nenbers all have day jobs (& one unenployed). ilWerve lost a lct of noney recently through our pa & our van, The pa is an IIH r:g. When it works, it can be.surprisi, ngly good, but agaLn & again s j-nce we got it we'rve had 1t blowing. ltrs been back at the factory nore than itts been cut on the road vrith us!rt rrAld our van blew up, costing us â‚ŹL1000. Then there aie agents' commisgions, tax, overheads, etc. & with gaffa tape at e5 a roll in scne shops, we don't come out with prof 1ts ! I rl The line-up's been together for 2 years wlthout changing. Working the clubs, they play a 1ct of cov?r versions - though they stress that these are thej,r own arrangenents & not just straight coples. And they only do songs that appeal to the band in the fi-rst place. The covers are partly because the crowd expect & want songs they knrw as well as the group's own nunbers & also because f| nrs is a long tlne to play i-f yourre just doi-ng your own songs, so the covers pad J-t out & nake j-t more varied. Flowever, they're now findlng that more & more of the crowd tney pull is c^mj,r:g along to hear their own songs. In fact, thelr high energy new wave has pu1led too blg a crowd at a coupl-e of venues & theyrve been ,unable to go back because the'staff 'canrt coper. Manager, Steve Musson, put up the money for their demo. rtWe spent B hours worklng through the night in Ric-Racrr. The denors got EMI & CBS interested j-n the band, & also Mick Rea (brother of Chrls) at Magnet. Those l-abels have promised to send along someone to catch the band 1ive. The band feel that they're at their best live & so have high hopes -for a deal i.n the xear future. In the immedlate future, theyrre ke,en to do more supports to touring .bands & get in as nueh gigging exposure as they can. Thejir demo is on sale at gigs & is eertainly proving to be popular. 3or all- you readers of the l{ME, herers an account cf the nuslcal happen-lngs of the weekend whi-ch were never nentioned il that inferior comic. This is the weekend when approxi.nately lO bands take their coveted places on rockrs most prestigioue stagep, & a weekend of heavy netal 1ay in store. I Old wave' bands such as itrhitesnake , 1IF0, & Gillan lined up agalnst the 'rnew wave' band.s such as Def leppard, Iron ]laiden & Praylng Mantis. FaIDAY - &, as always, i arrived late to hear the strains of the young pretenders fron Switzerlaad ' .. Itrokus (see Locir ioilcira revi.ew irl lasi isgue of WCR.) although, to be fair, they sounoed a lot more powe-rf,ul & were certalnly an lnprovenent on their Scottish gig. this was probably due to the use of far superior eguipment & the fact that lrrc now nore fan1l1ar with tne!0. Moving up the bi-l1 fron last year cone Gillan. thie they pfayed 'Vengeancer i'm pleased to say that Univer'ser , tSmoke. .. t , etc. tine, plus the usual tMrtff You Selieve', which was One of-my favourites rs apparentiy 'knocked together? by Bernie Torn6 during a- Janning session, the gultar at the beginnlng sound incredlbly like Eendrix. A scrappy show, but top of the bill next year perhaps? Now here"s a gqy whors been around a while - Rory Gall-agher playing his 3rd Read.ing & his 2:rd headlinerl stiil ieailng his Lunberjaek gear. With Rory' anything goes, starting off, with hard driving rock through to the bluesr ts&3 & country music. Playing a range of i,nstrunents fron the c1d faithful Rosevrood Strit to Dobros, acoustics, mandolins & a variety of other electric guitars. Jf you donrt like hls ca!efree mus1c, you must appreciate the talent & versat ili ty. We11, thatrs Frlday over, & it'rs off for the usual trlp 'en off priced't hamburger. SAEURDAY - & the Bunts out which makes i.t a good day for lying around, getting pissed on y'crate of lJatneyrs & listenlag to the dayrs offerings (or falling asleep 1n sone casesJ. lVot"surpri3ingty, people did falI asleep (nyself lncluded) because tands such as Broken Home, White Spirit & Grand Prj-x weren'tt exactly awe-i-nspirlgg &' bitween 'che 3 of them, they couldnrt cone up witb one classic whioh would roake you want to wake up & listen. Sanson were the first band to make an inpaet on Saturday, a large cage surroundtng the roasked drumoer- mad.e people sit up & watch out of sheel curi-oslty. The nusic began to pick up & vocallet Bruce Bruce gradually roanaged to attraet the attention of the audlence. Stj-I1 , nothing to rvrite horoe about. Pat lravers nanaged to get the place going by playing music that ias nore cultivated than just a-5 lfroia ihrash that we'd. been so used to r.up to roow' 3y thls tine it's getting darker & the audie:ice are on the.ir feet. here. The neavy lnage is dampened sli.gntly by-tEe 'pretty boy' looks of guitar,/vocalist Kevin leybourne. Get ytNewcastle Brown out 'cos next come Geordie band fygers of Pan Cang, better than the average HM band, plenty of potential, f partlcularly 1lked tSuzy Snlled'. Magnum brought a large follcwing frorn Bruro & managed to brlng the audience to their feet, God knows why, I found then utterly boring & repetJ-tive. Budgie passed by with a reasonable response, but the next band to appear were a real surprise. At the last minute B11zzard. of 0z ( tnankfully) pulLed out & in came the o1d skinhead rockers frorn Wolverhanpton - Slade, as elegant & raucous as ever. Itve never seen anything J.ike it; for the fj.rst (& only) tine during the weekend, the place was set on fire & ripped apart by this band who captivated every single person present. (What about the narri.ed ones? - ed. ). O1dies such ag tMana Weer All Crazee Nowt, 'Curn on Feel The Noi-ze', tGet Down & Get With It', plus new ones such ag 'Whea I'm Dancing, I Ain't FJ-ghtrngr & rThe Wheels Ain't Conin' Down' were ernortg those that cane off begt of all. Anything after Slade was pure anticllnax. Ird love to see these guys back on top. Durlng the Slade (& not only Slade's) set, a ean flinglng fight took place, fun for some, dangerous for those whose heads were cut open, surely thls is sonethlng we could do wlthout next year. Like I saidr after Slade, everythj.ng was an enticlinax. Def leppard played a nediocre set, & the big boys Whitesnake (Coverdale, Paice & lord) were so incred-ibly borlng. To be honest, I thj.nk I was i-n a ldnority here, but they certainly didnrt l:ve up to ny expectations. They went down well. Perhaps people vere naking the roost cf the last band they'd hear from a weekend wlth only a few highl-ights & only one rea'l gurprlse. Yet again f walked out & Iooked for a hanburger & had to settle for a kebab. Got back to m'tent & sorne pri"ck was playing Genesis (ughl l ) fulI volume in the tent next to roe - ah welI, tbere's no rest for the wicked. l{o John PeeI thls weekend! So what? I onJ.y nisged the football rETilts and, as the badges proclqimed, ttjohn Ceelrs a Puntl. After a whole weekend of ilM, I reflected on how boring & clone-like the inusic was, but T suppose of nusi-c, )O"/" of it's tilsh, but it's like any style when 1t 's good , it I s blooriy goo<i. fan Gillan opened his heart & sunned up why people from all over the contlnent nake the pilgriaage to thj.s I day spectacle by saying: rlthe spi.rit of festiyals survives here, & no-one (pause) not one person can talce that awayrr. I'iever a truer word spoken; if the nuslc wasn't all that brilliant, the soirit certainly was.
