Dear Reader, I was ten years old when my grandmother gave my sister and me a copy of Little Women. For years, I wanted to be book-loving Jo, the star and narrator of the story, munching apples and scribbling in her attic room. But as I grew up, things I’d sort of skipped over on first—or tenth—reading struck me differently. I started to wonder, was there more to the story than Jo (or even Louisa May Alcott) told us? I wanted to explore the March sisters’ lives in a way that reflected my adult perspective. So I researched Louisa’s own life, aged the sisters up to their twenties—the contemporary “coming of age”— and reimagined their story as women’s fiction in what I hope is a fun, fresh, relatable way. Of course, there’s a huge challenge in reimagining a classic because so many readers know and love the original, and they’re going to bring their own feelings and memories of reading Little Women (or watching the movie) to your book. I’m not sure you can ever live up to that kind of expectation. You can only be true to yourself, to your own experience, your own emotions. This past year was tough for all of us. Writing about the March sisters gave me a sense of family and connection at a time when we’re all missing family and longing for connection. Beth & Amy is a comfort read, but it’s also about three different women, two generations, who struggle and come out the other side stronger than before. It’s hopeful and heartwarming and, yes, romantic. At its heart, Little Women is about the sisters’ journey—their different paths to adulthood. The March women, all of them, speak to me, because I carry each of them inside me: responsible Meg, independent Jo, peace-loving Beth, ambitious Amy. And Abby, forever defined as Marmee/Momma, but also a woman with drives and dreams of her own. They have been my companions, offering a kind of road map on the path to becoming my best self. They inspired my journey in so many ways, as a writer and a woman. Growing up, I wanted to live in their world. Now, in Meg & Jo and Beth & Amy, I get to share their story, my story, my homage to Little Women. I hope you’ll find some of your story here, too.

What scenes or lines from the original Little Women do you recognize in Beth & Amy? What struck you as most different? Amy feels guilty for having sex with her sister Jo’s ex—“a clear

violation of the Sisters’ Code.” Do you believe in a similar code? What makes Amy’s choices in Paris and three years later in Bunyan okay or not okay?

When Beth arrives for the wedding, her family reacts to her changed appearance. “Look at you,” Abby says. “You’re skin and bones.” And Phee replies, “You can never be too rich or too thin.” How do their comments reflect the messages women hear about their bodies? How do other characters in the story feel or talk about weight or appearance?

Why do you think the author chose to include Abby/Momma’s point of view in this story? What did it add to your understanding of the characters? At what point in the story did you realize Beth had an eating

In Louisa May Alcott’s time, many young women died in childhood or childbirth. The original Beth dies of scarlet fever. Why do you think the author chose to give Beth an eating disorder instead? Were you satisfied or dissatisfied with the decision not to kill off her character?
