PANELISTS Karen Berger has been a force in the comics industry for over 25 years. Beginning her career at DC Comics, she became the founding editor of DC's mature-reader imprint Vertigo in 1993. She earned critical acclaim and popular success in her 20 years heading Vertigo with legendary titles such as Fables, Hellblazer, The Invisibles, 100 Bullets, Preacher, and V for Vendetta. After stepping down from Vertigo in 2012, Karen Berger joined forces with Dark Horse Comics in 2017 to launch her new imprint Berger Books. Shelly Bond is the curator/editor of Black Crown, IDW's creator-owned imprint at the cross street of comics and chaos. See the debut titles Kid Lobotomy, Assassinistas, and Punk's Not Dead! Her name appears in over 950 comic books and graphic novels, from Neil Gaiman's award-winning Sandman series to masterworks by Grant Morrison, Bill Willingham, and Michael Allred. Bond lives in Los Angeles with her favorite comics book artist/husband, Philip, and their son, Spencer. She wields red pens and tap shoes with equal aplomb. Meg Cabot is an award-winning author. Her books for adults, teens, and tweens have included multiple #1 New York Times bestsellers, selling well over 25 million copies worldwide. Cabot’s Princess Diaries series has been published in more than 38 countries and was made into two hit films by Disney. She is also the author of the popular Mediator series and the Heather Wells mystery series. Meg was born in Indiana during the Chinese astrological year of the Fire Horse, a notoriously unlucky sign, but has been working hard ever since to give herself a happy ending. She currently lives in Key West with her husband. Shea Fontana is a screenwriter for film and television, as well as a comic book writer. Her work includes the original graphic novels in the DC Super Hero Girls line, as well as TV shows The 7D, Doc McStuffins, Whisker Haven Tales with the Palace Pets, the feature film Crowning Jules, and more. She has also written for DC’s iconic comic book series Wonder Woman and Justice League.
PANELISTS Kami Garcia is the #1 New York Times, USA Today, and international bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures and Dangerous Creatures novels. Beautiful Creatures has been published in 50 countries and translated into 39 languages. Kami’s solo series, The Legion, includes Unbreakable, an instant New York Times bestseller, and its sequel, Unmarked, both of which were nominated for Bram Stoker Awards. Her other works include The X-Files Origins: Agent of Chaos and the YA contemporary novels The Lovely Reckless and Broken Beautiful Hearts. Kami was a teacher for seventeen years before coauthoring her first novel on a dare from seven of her students. She is a cofounder of YALLFest, the biggest teen book festival in the country. She lives in Maryland with her family. Lauren Myracle is the bestselling author of many books for children and young adults, including the acclaimed Internet Girls books ttyl, ttfn, and l8r, g8r. ttyl, and ttfn are New York Times bestsellers and ttyl was the first book to be written entirely in instant message. Lauren is also the author of the popular Winnie Years middle grade series. Lauren grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned a BA in English and psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later earned an MA in English from Colorado State University, where she taught for two years, and an MFA in writing for children and young adults from Vermont College. Erin Nations is an illustrator and cartoonist living in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from SOU in 2005 and was accepted into the summer semester of Comics/Graphic Novel Certificate Program at the IPRC in 2013. Since 2014, he has self-published a handful of zines and his first comic, Twins-Triplet. He is a frequent contributor to the quarterly comics newspaper Vision Quest and has been featured in Original Plumbing magazine. His comic book series Gumballs launched in December 2016, from Top Shelf. Carolyn Nowak graduated from the University of Michigan's School of Art and Design in May 2011. She likes to make illustrations and loves making comics. She's previously worked with Cartoon Network, Boom Studios, Spry Publishing, Z2 Comics, and others. She lives in Ann Arbor.
PANELISTS Danielle Paige is the New York Times bestselling author of the Dorothy Must Die series and the Stealing Snow series. In addition to writing young adult books, she works in the television industry, where she’s received a Writers Guild of America Award and was nominated for several Daytime Emmys. She is a graduate of Columbia University and currently lives in New York City. Ridley Pearson is an Edgar nominee, Fulbright Fellow, and a #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 50 award-winning suspense and young adult adventure novels. His novels have been published in two dozen languages and have been adapted for both network television and the Broadway stage. Ridley’s middle-grade-reader series include The Kingdom Keepers, Steel Trapp, and Lock & Key. Ridley plays bass guitar in an all-author rock band with other bestselling writers (Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Mitch Albom, Scott Turow, Greg Iles, and occasionally Stephen King). He lives and writes in the Northern Rockies along with his wife, Marcelle. Mariko Tamaki is an award-winning Canadian writer living in Oakland, California. Her growing slate of critically acclaimed comics and graphic novels includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tomb Raider, Adventure Time, She-Hulk, Lumberjanes, Supergirl: Being Super, and The Super-Man. Hamish Steele is a freelance animation director and illustrator who grew up in Somerset surrounded by legends, myths, and folktales. Since graduating from Kingston University, Hamish has worked for the BBC, Cartoon Network, Disney, and Nickelodeon, among others. He is the creator of Pantheon and his debut book for young adults, DeadEndia, comes out in August. Hamish currently lives in London.
MODERATORS Scott Brick, an acclaimed voice artist, screenwriter, and actor, has performed on film, television, and radio. His stage appearances throughout the US include Cyrano, Hamlet, and MacBeth. In the audio industry, Scott has won over 20 Earphones Awards, as well as the 2003 Audie Award in the Best Science Fiction category for Dune: The Butlerian Jihad. After recording nearly 250 books in five years, AudioFile Magazine named Scott “one of the fastest-rising stars in the audiobook galaxy” and proclaimed him one of their Golden Voices. Brick’s range is unparalleled as he reads thrillers to narrative nonfiction, biographies to science fiction with aplomb. Robin Brenner is the Teen Librarian at the Brookline Public Library and very famously the founder of No Flying No Tights, a graphic novel review site for schools and libraries, as well as so many other things that are amazing, cool, and fabulous―such as being an Eisner judge! Derek Ivie is the Youth Services Coordinator at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System on Long Island, a YALSA Board Member 2017-2018, and a key organizer of the session, 'Graphic Sex: Comics, New Media, and the Queering of Sex Education' at New York Comic Con 2017. Raymond Pun is a First Year Student Success Librarian at Fresno State (+a huge graphic novel fan) and organized an upcoming session for San Diego Comic-Con Conference for Educators and Librarians in 2018 on building partnerships and reaching diverse readership between libraries and students.
