open house october 6th 40th Anniversary of the Rainbow Pride Flag The rainbow flag, commonly known as the gay pride flag or the LGBT pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements. Other older uses of rainbow flags include a symbol of peace and the colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, as the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride during LGBT rights marches. While this use of the rainbow flag originated in the San Francisco Bay area, the flag is now used worldwide. Originally divided by artist Gilbert Baker, the design has undergone several revisions since its debut in June 1978, first to remove colors then restore them based on the availability of fabrics. The most common variants consist of six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is typically flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be a natural rainbow.

Welcome to Pride Vermont 2018! Fall is the time of year when Vermont begi ns to burst with color. What better way to kick off this beautiful seas on than with a Pride Parade and Festival celebrating the diverse LGBTQ+ communities of Vermont? The Church Street Marketplace will be bloo ming with rainbow Pride flags from Main to Pearl Streets throughou t the week. How fitting that we begin with a brunch at Waterworks on Saturday, September 1st and end with a dinner at Bluebird Barbeque on Sunday, September 9th. We’ll need lots of yummy food to help fuel this full week of activities. LGBTQ+ community members and orga nizations have planned over 20 fabulous events including beach parti es, tea dances, bar invasions, dance parties, theatre, poetry, the para de, the festival and so much more! This year’s theme is Our Stories, Our Lives. We each have a unique story to tell. As our communities expe rience everything from joy and affirmation to injustice and division, shar ing our stories can bring us together in strength. Knowing some of the history and context of each other’s lives can guide us to solidarity and collective liberation. If I know where someone has been, I’m better prep ared to have their back and support them in where they need to go. This being my first Pride in my new role of Executive Director, I’m takin g the spirit of this year’s theme to heart. Learning more about our colle ctive experiences, successes, and achievements will certainly help me to be a more compassionate community member and a more informed leader. I’m looking forward to connecting with Vermont’s vibrant LGBTQ+ communities, hearing your stories, and hopefully you’re open to hearing some of mine. Pride Vermont is a labor of love. It is prod uced by a committee made up of mostly volunteers in partnership with community groups and organizations. Please come out, celebrate and show your support and gratitude for all of the hard work! Together we can make this Pride one of the best ever! In solidarity,
Mike Bensel

Our Stories | Our Lives is the theme for a very special Pride Vermont. 2018 has been challenging and even downright scary for our communities. Claiming who were are, where we’ve come from and where we’re going is the simple yet strong intention and spirit behind Pride Vermont 2018. We encourage all community members, allies and families of all LGBTQ2+ peoples to use the hashtag #OurStoriesOurLives to share the stories of their brave and amazing lives as the summer rolls on. Stay tuned for more announcements where your stories, your brave lives will be recognized, respected and amplified. Let’s get loud and proud.

Often times folks don’t realize the amount of work that goes into event planning until they experience it first hand. I knew this summer was going to be a busy one taking on the organizing of the Pride Festival & Parade, but I certainly had no idea the level of blood, sweat, and tears that are poured into making this week the largest celebration of LGBTQ+ people in the state. One thing is certain, it would not have happened if it weren’t for the incredible staff and board at the Pride Center of Vermont and the rockstar team on the Pride Planning Committee. I’d like to thank the following people, plus any I erroneously forgot, for their contributions to this event and the entire week. With gratitude and pride,

David Frye (he/him) identifies as a person with a disability and a person in the gay community who wants to create positive change not only for him, but for those who are GLBTQIA both locally and nationally. Ten years ago, after attending a national conference and participating in a relationship workshop that failed to meaningfully include 6:03 PM or mention GLBTQIA individuals with disabilities, David returned to Vermont and founded the GLBQTIA Disability Network with the Pride Center of Vermont. Since then, David’s message has been consistent: that people with disabilities deserve to feel good in their own skin, to be loved by whoever they wish, and to be themselves while being proud of and accepted for who they are. When community members see David as their grand marshal this year, he hopes it signals to them how far he has come in his own journey for self-acceptance and empowerment and that his visibility as a GLBTQIA activist with a disability inspires others who are struggling with their identity to move closer to communities of love and acceptance.

Beverly Little Thunder
Beverly Little Thunder is a member of the Standing Rock band of the Lakota, a reservation in North Dakota. A Two Spirit mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a lifelong activist, Beverly was involved in the American Indian Movement in 1973 through 1985, and has fought for racial and social justice and human rights.
Join Beverly Little Thunder for a water ceremony at the waterfront at 4pm on September 8th
An original participant in the first Two Spirit gathering in 1988, held in Minneapolis Minnesota, she the helped in the planning of future gatherings in the United States and Canada. Turned away from her people in 1986 when she came out, she has become an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ2IA visibility and respect. She believes that she nor anyone else should have to give up their spirituality for their sexuality. For the last 30 years she has led an all women's Sundance ceremony. Women from all nationalities, tribes, and sexual identities, gather together for a week to pray for the people, the environment and for our future generations. She and her partner of 20 years, Pam Alexander, purchased land in Vermont, that will be placed in trust to ensure a permanent home for this ceremony. A published author of her memoir “One Bead at a Time” she was also a contributor to the 1995 “Two Spirit People”. She is a frequent speaker at Universities across this continent. She also enjoys speaking to children in elementary through High School to assist in dispelling myths about Native American history that are still being taught in our schools today. As a current board member for the Peace and Justice Center in Burlington Vermont, she continues to work toward racial and social justice in the state of Vermont and her community.
