Welcome to Pride Vermont 2019! The Pride Vermont Committee and the Center staff, board, and volunteers are thrilled to welcome LGB TQ+ folks from all over the Northeast to celebrate Pride in Verm ont. This year, Pride Festivals around the world have been commem orating the 50 years that have passed since the Stonewall Riots. It was with this in mind that our Pride Committee chose the theme Prou d Legacy, Powerful Future: 50 Years of Persistence to celebrate our victories and honor the hard work and perseverance that our commun ities have and will continue to endure in our everyday lives as well as in our journey towards liberation. From the first Burlington Pride in 1983 to today, Vermont has been a place of significant activism. We cont inue to mobilize and speak out about the injustices that impact our communities and our nation. Pride Vermont is an important opportun ity for us to recognize the legacy of the Stonewall Riots where LGB TQ+ people, particularly black and brown trans and queer folks, stoo d up to systems of oppression and catalyzed our current movement. While we have made many strides regarding legislation that protects against discrimination and hate, we’ve acheived marriage equa lity, we have built community centers, we’ve become leaders in our world, our work continues. We are still plagued by racism, transphob ia, ableism, xenophobia, hate, and economic injustice on a global and local level. We see this in the disproportionate numbers of trans wom en of color murdered, our high suicide rates, and local vandalism targeting LGBTQ+ community members. It has become more and more important that we use this as an opportunity to speak out against these systems that continue to oppress us. This year we honor the legacy and futur e of Outright Vermont- an organization that has been making it better for queer, trans, and questioning youth across the state over the last 30 years. This hopeful tribute celebrates an organization that has impacted so many lives and serves as an investment in the futur e of our communities. Please join us as we celebrate this beloved insti tution and their critical work serving LGBTQ+ youth in Vermont. We feel a tremendous amount of Pride in marc hing beside them and all of you. PROUD LEGACY, POWERFUL FUTURE:
50 YEARS OF PERSISTENCE 2019's Pride Theme is "Proud Legacy, Powerful Future: 50 Years of Persistence" and we sought two grand marshals who represent that theme well. We searched for nominees over the course of four months and included community nominations. We received dozens of nominations, all of which were exciting, valid, and worthy of recognition. But one nomination stood out from the rest and was received unanimously from the Pride Planning Committee as the perfect, timely fit for our theme: Outright Vermont. In looking back retrospectively since the Stonewall Inn Riots of 1969, Vermont's queer history is full of landmark occasions. Outright Vermont's founders have collectively fought for LGBTQ rights over the past five decades and in 1989 when they created the queer youth organization around a kitchen table in Addison County they also created a platform that not only supports and meets youth where they are but also has proven to foster future generations of queer activists, too. With this, we are pleased to be honoring the founders of Outright Vermont, the many board members, volunteers, and staff members who have shaped and sustained the organization for the past 30 years, as well as the Outright Youth of past and present.

2019 GRAND MARSHAL SPOTLIGHT
OUTRIGHT VERMONT
Keith Goslant, Howdy Russell, Bill Lippert, Dave Landers, Naomi Tannen, Deb Kutzco. These six Vermonters created Outright Vermont back in the late 80s to ensure that queer youth not only survive the isolation, homophobia, and angst that growing up queer meant during the 1990s and beyond. They launched the first Friday Night Group that would occur every single Friday for the next 30 years—a safe place where queer youth could come and truly be themselves. They built an organization around it that through the work of many dedicated volunteers and staff since, has blossomed into the amazing organization we all know and love today. Simply put, these folks saved the future of the queer community in Vermont. MANY of our community leaders today were youth at Outright, not to mention staff and volunteers who have found that organization to be the needed, growing edge of our community in activism, purpose, and glittery magic. These folks deserve a MFing parade. – Llu Mulvaney-Stanak nominator and former Executive Director of Outright As an openly gay youth growing up during the 1960’s in Vermont I got used to feeling alone, feeling isolated, thinking I was the only one who felt like this. I spent most of my youth waiting to hear the person in the front of the room say the words that acknowledged they knew I might be in the room. Then something happened. Instead of waiting for that person in the front of the room, as queer Vermonters, we found our own voices. We spoke loud and proud, using the words that defined who we were, words that we chose. But we didn’t forget that youth who thought they were alone. We made a commitment to reach out to that youth, to visibly support that youth. We wanted to create a place where youth could talk with each about the things that were important to them, where they could be just youth sharing time with each other and know they had found their family. Then, as founders, we took the step most needed, we got out of the way of our youth. Outright was not about what we had needed as youth, but what queer youth need now. Who better to set that vision, that journey, then the youth who are living it. As we continue to move forward, know that your elders will support you as you find your voices and will stand hand in hand with you as together, we proclaim, loud and proud, we are queer Vermonters, and this is our home. - Keith Goslant on behalf of the Outright founders
