Find Out More: Mundys, Queen LOOKS AREN’T EVERYTHING... but being attractive certainly doesn’t hurt, whether you’re considering your next property, furnishing your home or when you’re gainfully employed as a model! Glenn Goodwin was raised in Leeds, Harrogate & Boroughbridge, but moved to Lincolnshire 14 years ago. The serial house renovator has lost count of just how many properties he and partner Richard Cartwright have transformed, but they reckon it’s 12 or 13... if it’s the latter, then The Byre in Ownby by Spital has not proved unlucky. And the next owners will certainly consider themselves to have fallen on their feet, moving into a barn conversion that’s spacious, well-maintained and impressive in its design. “The building is over 200 years old, and was within the curtilage of the Manor House,” says Glenn. “The hay barn and byre – which is an Old English term for a cowshed – were part of the same building and were located adjacent to the stables. Upon the sale of the Manor House about 30 years ago, the family moved into some of the barns and others on the estate were offered for sale.”

Glenn and Richard purchased the house in 2018 and began renovating it. Glenn is a former model who worked with the Louise Morton model agency. Louise founded the agency as a charm school and later launched the careers of hundreds of models from 1955 right into the 21st century and many of them – including Glenn – found themselves on the runways for the biggest names in couture fashion. Glenn later worked in the fashion industry and made a segue into visual merchandising then window dressing and finally into interior design for commercial clients like hotels and for domestic clients too.

And so, his vision for The Byre was clear; to create a comfortable and practical home whilst preserving the industrial heritage of the building in the process. During the course of the property’s renovation, the roof, wiring, plumbing and boiler were all replaced, meaning all of the essential services are in great condition despite the building being 200 years old. The kitchen was redesigned too. Glenn worked with Chris Strange of Scunthorpe, and describes the company’s Andy Gough as ‘brilliant.’ The Silestone work surfaces and Cosentine cabinetry is paired with appliances from premium brands like Samsung and Fisher & Paykel, the latter brand contributing the two whopping great fridges, and wine cooler. There’s a boiling water tap too, an induction hob and separate utility. The kitchen leads into a dining room with natural light on three aspects, and there’s a summer sitting room and a winter sitting room with, respectively, doors leading onto the terrace, hot tub, and wood burner. >> 71

>> As an interior designer, Glenn has worked with Lees Furnishers of Grimsby and has sourced a number of bespoke or design-led furnishings from the retailer, and from names like lighting studio Design Orchard. Elsewhere there are Farrow & Ball colours and more generally, very well-considered use of light, scale and space, especially in the four bedrooms, each of which has its own en suite. The thoughtful design continues outdoors too. Originally the property’s grounds were laid to lawn, but Glenn introduced organic shapes in place of straight lines, and has used indigenous planting, as well as the odd statement plant like bamboo. There’s also a large and impressive palm tree to the front of the property, and terraces around the house, each of which enjoys total privacy thanks to the house’s perimeter walls and gates, which also provide security for children and pets. However, despite how successful the results of their labours, Glenn and Richard remain serial renovators. And so, no sooner is the paint dry on the wall, then the desire to be surrounded by bare brick and chaos kicks in again. The two are already considering their next project, and have put the property onto the market with Market Rasen’s Mundys. Its next owners will inherit an impressive, well-designed and very practical property indeed. n

A New Home for LAVISH BATHROOMS

Five years on from creating Louth’s most design-led bathroom studio, Lavish Bathrooms is expanding into brand new premises to provide new inspiration, new ranges and an even better customer experience...

Words: Rob Davis.

DESIGN is art with a purpose, and the most successful examples fuse practicality and functionality with a great look and feel. Take your bathroom fittings, for example... You only get one chance to plan and install your new bathroom correctly, so making sure it’s done right first time is imperative to ensure you’re happy with your investment and you end up with a room that looks good for years. Happily, since 2017, both Simon and Nicola Dixey-Chambers have worked hard to establish Louth’s Lavish Bathrooms as the county’s leading supplier and installer of design-led bathrooms, en suites and cloakrooms.

Having traded for five years, the team is now moving to much larger premises on the town’s Fairfield Industrial Estate to provide much more space to show off a large range of products, and to provide new products and ranges from brands like Utopia and Laufen. The new premises will officially open with a VIP event on 17th and 18th June, and so during our visit, the team were getting the new 4,000sq ft showroom ready. “Only an independent, family-run, local company can give you the time and attention you deserve when you’re planning to replace your bathroom,” says Nicola. “There’s nowhere to hide when you’re installing a bathroom. Any cheap, or poorquality fittings or a rushed installation will soon ruin any hopes you had of creating a great looking room. Instead, by investing in customer care and making sure we do the job right, first time, we’ve been able to grow the company organically and ensure hundreds of satisfied customers over the years.” “This approach also means a much better experience for the customer as they enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing the whole installation and the coordinating of every tradesperson from installers to plumbers to electricians and flooring & tiling experts is managed for them.” “That means our customers are free to concentrate on the enjoyable bit; choosing their new suite and accessories from our range of design-led brands like Lauren, Dansani, Utopia Heritage, Burlington and Roman.” “Because we concentrate on supplying and installing bathrooms specifically, we’ve become really good at what we do, and our new showroom will allow us to give each customer the time and attention they deserve to improve the experience even more.” “As part of our design service we use Oculus 4D technology to provide a ‘virtual reality’ tour around your new bathroom. It’s an example of how we strive to provide the best service, the best products and the most design-led products to ensure you end up with a bathroom, en suite or cloakroom that functions brilliant, but also looks absolutely fantastic, year after year!” n

n For a free, no obligation discussion about your project with no pressure-selling guaranteed, visit Lavish Bathrooms, established since 2017 on Fairfield Industrial Estate, Louth, LN11 0GP.
