WHERE WE CREATE

inside the studio of JaimeDougherty Hello, Jamie Dougherty here to give you a little tour of my creative space. I am a California girl who was born and raised in the same small town in Southern California where my husband and I now raise our two children. I have been creating art since my teens, but I really got into scrapbooking when my daughter was born nine years ago. I was your basic scrapper; cut, paste, repeat. Then I figured, “Why not include my fine arts background into my work?” So I slowly intertwined the two together. As you can see my room is as eclectic as my work. I am not a neat-and-tidy sort of artist. If it wasn’t for this issue, you would most likely see piles of paper and paint scattered all over my room. But, there is always that day when you have to clean up the mess to start a new one, right? Besides, the close knit relationship I have with my mess, I also have with places to store my supplies. I look for inexpensive ways to store my goodies. With paint and ink flying I try not to spend too much money on my storage solutions. It will just get covered in mess anyways. I look for finds at IKEA, or wait until I find a sale at one the big chain stores. When you are in a smaller space, storage is the key. If you feel overwhelmed where you work you won’t have the desire to create. Thank you for stopping by to check out my space. You’ll catch a few glimpses of Prima goodies on the way through; and I hope I have given you a few ideas on how to neatly situate your creative space.

My PriMa Place { 21 }

WHERE WE CREATE

Q&A 1. What inspired your design and the colors of your craft room? I love pops of color, nothing to overwhelming but just enough to inspire me. As you can see I am in a somewhat small area so I utilize my room as much as possible.

2. How do you store your Prima products? I use plastic totes (you can find them at your local Walmart, Target, etc.) I label each tote by flower size and/+or embellishment type. That way I can choose the box that best suits my current project.

3. How do you display/store your Prima projects? I hang some of my layouts on the walls of my home in Prima wood frames. I rotate them out every so often. I also have a display case where I keep some of my mixed media pieces. Why not share them? What good are they if they are hidden away?

4. What is your favorite piece of furniture in your room?

{ 22 } My Prima Place

My favorite piece is my desk unit. I have two tables put into an L shape that gives me a massive amount of room to work on. Plus I have stackable shelves on top for additional storage. I found all of these at IKEA.

5. How much time per week do you spend in your craft room? I would have to say at least two hours a day and, sometimes, I can spend an entire day on the weekends. I’ve seen the sun rise a time or two.

6. What time of the day do you usually create? Most of my creating is done in the evenings. I am a night owl and the old brain doesn’t like to shut off, so...I create once everyone else has gone to bed.

7. Do you have an inspiration board and if so what would you be most likely to have pinned on it? I have a couple. On one board I have projects my kids have made for me. They, themselves, inspire me. They are my greatest creations. I also have a board with little projects I’ve done in the past. It gives me starting points on new projects. Plus you can’t go wrong with Pinterest.

WHERE WE CREATE

My Prima Place { 23 }

WHERE WE CREATE

8. Do you listen to music or watch television while you create? I usually will have some type of noise on in the background. I think it’s from having kiddos. I need that background noise to keep me from concentrating too much LOL.

9. If you could change one thing about your room, what would it be? The size. I could use more storage space. I love what I have in the room, but a little more space would be nice.

10. What is your all time favorite Prima Product? You like to ask the hard questions, don’t ya? I love all of what Prima comes out with. If I didn’t I wouldn’t be here, right? I’m a little biased with my answer, but my all-time favorite would have to be the Sassy Felt Flowers I designed for Prima last year. My other Prima fave would be Say It In Crystals. You can never go wrong with bling.

love

by Keren Tamir (New Zealand) I created this project using the Shabby Chic Collection. I was inspired by the rich red tones. The red roses, along with all of the romantic embellishments, were the perfect fit for this dreamy photo of my husband and me at the beach. This mixed media canvas is the perfect gift for my husband on Valentine’s Day.

four

by Nic Howard (New Zealand)

Our gorgeous pup, Penny, is a year old now and such a treasured member of the family. This photo was taken on a whim on Christmas Eve as the kids played outside with her. Although not a planned photo, this picture reflects beautifully the relationship between family pet and children, so much that

they call her ‘one of the kids’ now, hence the title ‘Four’. The neutral papers of the Engraver collection paired with the gorgeous pinks of the Labelle flowers make a lovely girlie page, perfect for the extra girl we have welcomed into the family!

TIP: White alphas can be custom colored using Prima Chalk Edgers. Place your title along a plastic ruler or similar straight edge. Use Prima Chalk Edgers directly on the letters, heavier colors on the bottom, fading to softer at the top.

DIVINE CARD Julie Nutting (USA)

I hope you all have fun using this brand-new stamp line featuring my mixed media girls! It’s like playing paper dolls! When you combine them with one of Prima’s paper pads you have so many options for clothes and embellishments at your fingertips. For this card I used the new Divine Collection papers mixed in with a few other Prima goodies.

{ 34 } My Prima Place

Step by Step Tutorial 1 Fold the teal cardstock in half to create card. Cut Epigram paper to 4 1/4 x 6 3/4, distress edges and glue to center of card. Cut Envoy paper slightly smaller and glue to upper half of Epigram paper. Cut 1/2 of doily from Couplet paper and place under Envoy paper at the right side, center.

2 Cut piece of ruler from Divine paper pad. Cut teal chevron from Hello Pastel pad and glue both

to bottom edge of Envoy paper. Cut 5 triangles from Ballade paper and glue to top of Epigram paper, placing bakers twine behind banner.

4 Cut a ribbon-shaped banner out of

chevron paper and another from the sticker pack. Glue onto card so it looks like it is coming out from behind girl. Place a heart sticker on 3 Stamp girl on the script side of top of the pink banner. Epigram and cut out. Color hair and  shoes with colored pencils or marker. 5 Embellish bottom right corner with Stamp dress portion of stamp onto flowers, crystals and pink thread. Sweet Briars and cut out. Glue dress onto girl. Place girl onto left side of card using 3D dots.
