If you could be an engineer in Scotland, what would you do? With over 1,600 entries, 68 schools and 120 engineers, the Scottish Engineering Special Leaders Award was a huge success! We challenged primary school pupils in Scotland to research and interview inspiring engineers! From giraffe boats to disco braces, the entries were fantastic, and after much consideration, we finally chose 10 winners and shortlisted 155! After the winners were informed, we held an awards ceremony in the Barony Hall at the University of Strathclyde on December 14th, where all their work was displayed. The exhibiton was also open to the public for the rest of the weekend.

We will be running the Scottish Engineering Special Leaders Award again this year, and this time it is open to Primary and Secondary schools! The award is a great opportunity to engage pupils with real engineers who will convey the importance of STEM in their daily working lives. Schools will be able to develop relationships with industry, both local and worldwide, giving pupils a unique perspective of professions and their significance in the wider world. The winners will be announced on 3rd December 2013 and their work, along with the shortlisted entries, will be put up on display again – details to be confirmed. Interested? Visit our website for further information.
Good to see interest shown by the kids in engineering. Hope it helps Scotland produce more engineers we badly need. C. Standerwick Sales Director, Blantyre Castings SCOTTISH ENGINEERING SPECIAL LEADERS AWARD

Primary Engineer goes to the North East
In 2013, Primary Engineer was invited by the EEF Manufacturing Organisation to work with local companies and schools to build an engineering curriculum in local schools. Companies have funded 33 schools in the North East, and have also provided engineers to volunteer to help out. The companies include Ford Aerospace, Nissan, Siemens, RollsRoyce, Pearson Engineering, Port of Tyne, Quick Hydraulics, SONE Products and Katmex Ltd. Northumbria University students have expressed an interest in suporting the initiative. From the 33 schools, 42 teachers attended training days, 35 engineers have been linked to the schools and over 2259 pupils now have a practical understanding and appreciation of engineering.

North East Special Leaders Award Alongside the Primary Engineer training courses, the Leaders Award for STEM is also running its very own Special Award for the North East, which is open to both primary and secondary schools. Pupils are asked to interpret the question ‘If I could be an engineer in the North East, what would I do?. Find out more here.

CENTRAL ENGLAND FINAL AT ASTON UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING ACADEMY
Regional Champions Throughout 2013, Primary Engineer ran Regional Finals all over the UK: one in Scotland, and three in Northern, Central and Southern England, at which students were crowned champions of their region! From March to June 2013, Primary Engineer ran four Regional events all over the UK, where winning students from the County Finals competed against one another to become overall winner of their region. Alongside the students were teachers, parents and engineers, who were acting as judges on the day.

Becky Broadbent, a freelance STEM communicator, consultant, tutor and engineering education PhD student at Aston University, who came along to the Central England Final, says ‘I was very impressed by the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the students I spoke to as well as the engineering knowledge they had gained from the activity. It was great to see core engineering skills such as teamwork, problem solving and a positive attitude towards things not going as expected being displayed’. Thank you to all students who took part and congratulations to all the winners of 2013!
