CATHEDRAL SPIRES — CUSTER STATE PARK

South Dakota is prioritizing safe travel. Learn more at TravelSouthDakota.com/COVID.

Badlands National park

Spearfish Canyon

South Dakota is the Swiss Army knife of natural landscapes. Rolling plains. Craggy canyons. Whatever you call Badlands National Park. They all excite the senses and surprise anyone who’s only seen South Dakota on a map. If you’re looking for wide open spaces for safe exploring, look to great places like these.

In Custer State Park you can be minutes off the highway yet lightyears from the real world. For unfenced wildlife watching, there is no equal. The park’s home to mountain goats, antelope, elk and 1,400 bison. Drive Wildlife Loop Road near dawn or dusk for the best odds to meet furry locals.

Eons ago, Badlands National Park was a prehistoric sea floor. Thousands of years ago, it was home to nomadic tribes of mammoth hunters. Today it’s a marvel of natural engineering. Get a bird’s-eye view of the red mazes at Pinnacles Overlook, then explore on foot with a quick hike on Notch Trail.

Once explored by Lewis and Clark, the Missouri River was the original pathway into the American West, first traveled by trappers and traders and now by kayakers and boaters. You can explore an untamed 100-mile stretch of the Mighty Mo’ in the Missouri River National Recreational River, which winds its way through South Dakota’s southeast corner.

For 19 miles, a mountain creek carves a gorgeous trail, called Spearfish Canyon, through the Black Hills. Along its banks sprout aspen trees, ponderosa pines and thousand-foot cliffs. Follow US Hwy 14A for the views and save time for stops at three waterfalls along the way.

How can you explore great places responsibly? Plan ahead. Check local guidelines before you go. And always keep a healthy distance between you and others. Doing that, you can keep great places safe on a road trip to remember.

life is happier in color Blogger Ashley Wilson has ROYGBIV in her blood—even her bathtub is rainbowed. So brightening the shelves in her bedroom in Logan, UT, was a natural choice. She collected books and objects from thrift stores and scoured sites for quirk, like a pink poodle from Overstock. “Art pulls the color story together,” she says. As designer Quintece Hill-Mattauszek zhushed up this Washington, D.C., apartment for someone who had just gone through a breakup, she made shelves a focal point. The client wanted the place to feel all hers, “and she’s an avid reader who loves books.” Hill-Mattauszek built a display wall out of vertical maple boards with 12-inch-wide shelves. “The look is about much more than flair,” she says. “Books tell the story of who you are.”

Just the edges are stained gray— very cool.

HOW WE MAKE OUR SHELVES SPECIAL

We’ve filled our shelves with travel mementos. We have an old Elvis bust from a flea market, a ceramic rubber glove mold from an old factory, and— our favorite—a small jar of stones from Central Park when we were there for our fifth wedding anniversary.

Homework headquarters call for fun inspo. Designer Liz Tiesi went shopping for an eclectic mix of bottles for an under-the-stairs spot shared by two kids in Brooklyn, NY. “I grabbed stuff from other rooms—an abacus, a wood cow, a riddle on a letterboard—that also aren’t your standard shelf decor,” she says. “That’s what makes them interesting!”

This isn’t just the room of a 5-year-old in Los Angeles, CA—it’s a “café” to host tea parties for stuffies. So designer Ginny Macdonald gave her furry pals a place of honor. Natural touches and neutrals bring serenity to the dining room of Jacksonville, FL, blogger Carla Thompson. how bad is it to eat the same lunch every day? Nutritionists may be here to remind us all about a wellrounded diet, but they’re actually cool with lunches on repeat. Er, unless it’s a cheeseburger and fries—sorry! “The ideal is for a meal to include protein; a vegetable; a high-fiber carb, like whole-grain bread; and healthy fat,” says Chelsey Amer, R.D.N., a dietitian in Roslyn, NY. “A sandwich with deli meat, avocado, lettuce, and tomato, or a goat cheese and quinoa salad, are great daily choices, with an apple on the side.” Even pasta is OK to down on the reg, just make it the whole-grain kind. The bonus of being in a meal groove is that it can head off iffy food choices on hectic days, especially when lunch is prepped ahead of time, since that’s one fewer decision to make. A hack Amer recommends to clients: At the start of the week, whip up a batch of a favorite good-for-you protein, like grilled chicken or salmon, then mix it into different dishes—easy-peasy.

how bad is it to pluck feathers sticking out of a down coat?

K8P0V4L

Don’t! “It’s like a game of whack-a-mole— if you remove one feather, you’ll enlarge the hole and more will pop out,” says Daniel Uretsky, president of Allied Feather + Down. Instead, dig into the area from the top of the fabric, get ahold of the feather, and gently pull it back inside. Then massage the spot to move the feathers back into place and close the hole. The same typically works for a pillow or duvet as well. To keep feathers from escaping, Uretsky says an occasional wash is a good idea—when feathers are clean, they’re less likely to get brittle, break, and poke out. “People are afraid to put down coats in the washing machine, but it’s actually a very washable product,” says Uretsky. (Just check your item’s care label first.) Dry on low heat, with a clean tennis ball or a dryer ball to prevent clumping.

KINDA BAD!

While it’s arguably more aesthetically pleasing to have TP spool over the top (heated debates about this exist online), there’s also a less fluffy reason to do it. “Reaching under the roll means a series of germy hands are likely to brush against the wall, where the next person can come into contact with them,” says Gregg Weaver, research and development engineer at Procter & Gamble, the maker of Charmin. And if you needed any more convincing: “It’s much easier to find the tab and start dispensing when the paper is hanging over,” he says. This positioning also optimizes “perf tensile,” a.k.a. the amount of force needed to tear a sheet from the roll. You’ll thus avoid tugging, unspooling more than you need, and running out of rolls more quickly—a prudent habit whether hoarding toilet paper is trending or not.

how bad is it to share a New Year’s resolution on social media? Publicly professing your intention to, say, go for a run every morning might seem like a good idea. “That peer pressure of, ‘Hey, how’s your running going?’ is enough to prompt some people to stick to their goal,” says Luvvie Ajayi Jones, a culture critic and the author of I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual. That said, it could very well have the opposite effect: Research shows that people can fall into the trap of feeling like they already accomplished something simply because they’ve made an announcement. That gets in the way of real progress, since motivation is key to acing an achievement. “Posting isn’t enough, it’s up to you to do the work,” says Ajayi Jones. For commitment that goes beyond hashtagging, “have accountability chats with someone whose opinion you value,” she says. “It’s one of the most effective ways to reach a resolution, goal, or whatever you want to call it!”

Even if your dog regularly rolls over for tummy rubs, a stranger’s dog may not be inviting you to do so. As dog trainer Andrea La Fevers of Jackson Powder Hounds in Jackson, WY, says, “Every dog, like every person, likes different kinds of touches.” Sometimes dogs expose their bellies as a submissive posture because they’re feeling scared; lean in for a rub and you risk a bite. Always ask a pooch’s owner about touching, including petting. Make an ask of the pooch, too: “Offer your Did hand at or below snout level you know? Ear rubs! Treats! Watching TV?! where the dog can see and Yep, dogs can find it enjoyable— smell it,” says La Fevers. If research shows they perceive he moves his head forward images on the screen the way humans do. That’s a good reason to a bit, go ahead and pet his watch the Puppy Bowl together! For neck or chest, where he can showtimes, check animalplanet.com. see your hand. WIN WINTER Hacks and how-tos to keep you warm and toasty.

BUILD A LONGERLASTING FIRE What you need SEASONED WOOD. “Most firewood you find at hardware or grocery stores is hard wood, such as cherry or almond, which burns longer than soft varieties like pine and cedar,” says Amie Ryan, owner of Ryan Bros. Chimney Sweeping Inc. in Roseville, CA. Fresh-cut logs take six months to two years to dry out enough to become “seasoned” firewood. When chopping it, go for a mix of smaller logs (best for getting fires started) and larger ones. KINDLING. These bitty pieces of wood burn quickly, creating a base for a roaring flame. Buy sticks or chunks, or grab dry twigs from the yard. NEWSPAPER. Only use blackand-white newsprint, as the color kind can release chemicals.

What to do GET THE KINDLING GOING. Once a small pile of it is set on the fireplace grate, crumple in pieces of newspaper and light it to jumpstart the fire. STACK LOGS RIGHT. For maximum airflow, put them so they overlap one another in a crisscross pattern. Use smaller logs on the bottom, larger ones on top. Don’t place logs in a tight, compact stack. Says Ryan, “Oxygen helps fuel the fire.” When the fire starts to dwindle, add logs one at a time. ILLUSTRATIONS BY ELIANA RODGERS WRITTEN BY LIZ KRIEGER

HOT TIP

home + help

When temps dip below freezing, keep shades raised a few inches overnight to prevent condensation on windows.

3-6-1-6-6-7-5-1-3

BREW THE PERFECT CUP OF HOT CIDER To make basic apple cider seriously delicious, just add heat and a handful of ingredients. Here’s a cupful of comfort created by María del Mar Cuadra, author of Winter Cocktails.

DITCH PESKY DRAFTS FOR GOOD You’ll beat the chill and the bill. Heat gain and loss through windows accounts for up to 30% of a home’s HVAC energy use, per the U.S. Department of Energy. DRAFT-PROOF YOUR DOORS Exterior ones need door sweeps along the bottom and weather stripping around the edges to fully block drafts, says Rachel Flint, vice president of Hubbell Homes in Des Moines, IA. Sweeps are metal strips with flaps that attach to the door bottom, on the inside. Weather stripping is made of slim lengths of rubber or foam that seal excess space between the door and frame. If either one is dried up, cracked, or has gaps, out with the old and in with the new.

DRAFT-PROOF YOUR WINDOWS Check the weather stripping and the caulk inside your home, and replace if they’re not in good shape. Experts recommend latex caulking. “Get paintable caulking so you can match it to your window trim,” says Flint. Also assess whether locks are keeping the windows tightly shut. And in older homes, make sure that the seal around each windowpane (which is called glazing) is OK— when it’s crumbling or the glass looks foggy, it needs a pro repair.

1 small orange 3 cinnamon sticks 1 tablespoon whole allspice berries 5 cups apple cider Fresh cranberries, for garnish Optional: Sub in 1/2 cup applejack liquor for 1/2 cup cider.

1. Wash and peel the orange, put the peel aside, and squeeze the juice into a bowl. 2. Place the cinnamon sticks, allspice, and orange peel in a medium saucepan. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in the apple cider (and applejack, if using) and juice from the orange and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Strain the mixture through a sieve set over a bowl. Discard the spices and orange peel. Pour into cups and garnish with fresh cranberries.

WINTERIZE YOUR PET’S NEST FOR YOUR CAT: Consider treating yours to a cat cave made of wool. It’s a good insulator and kitties love to rest inside it, says Kristen Levine, the founder of Pet Living. For cheerful colored ones, check out Dharma Dog Karma Cat. FOR YOUR DOG: Pick up a memory foam bed. It’s particularly great for older dogs, since the cold can make joints stiffer and achier. “Foam mattresses tend to be warmer than other types, and being a bit warmer helps year-round,” says Levine. She likes the Brindle dog beds and the Orvis memory foam bolster dog bed. Keep a faux-fur throw on the end of your bed, if that’s a preferred sleeping spot. “Just remember: Since your pets have a fur coat, don’t put their bed or crate near a radiator or vent, as they may find it too warm,” she says. LEAKPROOF YOUR ROOF A cheap cold-weather buy that could save you a bundle: an adjustable roof rake, to remove excess snow from the eaves. A pileup can be more weight than your roof could handle and lead to big-bucks damage. Dos and don’ts from Christopher Carrothers, president of Drip Edge Roofing in Charlotte, NC: DO choose a rake with a blade made of polyethylene, a durable lightweight plastic. Skip ones with razor-blade edges, which can damage shingles. DON’T use a ladder to do the job, to avoid a slip situation. “Only remove snow you can reach from the ground,” says Carrothers. DO pay attention to icicles on the edge of the roof as you rake. A cluster of long ones can signal an ice dam, a frozen solid block that prevents melted snow from draining. Water may then seep under shingles and into the walls, so if you spot a bunch, call a roofer to check things out. DON’T let snow sit on your roof for days. Get to it as soon as possible, before powdery snow turns to heavy ice.

GET THE WARMEST BED “Bedding stays warm by trapping air in and around fibers, which insulates your body,” says Fran Kozen, a director in the fiber science and apparel design department at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. And the winners are… THE WARMEST DUVET: Ounce per ounce, down is warmer than synthetic fill, so it offers more warmth at a lighter weight than polyester and microfiber. How a duvet is constructed matters, since cool spots can result from shifting fill. Look for ones with “baffle box” stitching with plenty of pockets to keep the fill well-distributed. THE WARMEST SHEETS: Cotton flannel sheets rank highest for warmth because their napped surface helps contain warm air. (And they score sky-high on cuddliness!) Cotton and bamboo-based sheets are about equal, though bamboo ones tend to be more absorbent—a good thing if you overheat. THE WARMEST THROW: Merino wool is an MVP. It’s supercomfy, often less pricey than cashmere, and generally more washable. Also toss on a fuzzy or chunky knit pillow or two. “They make a bed ultimately cozy,” says designer Dan Vickery from Frozen in Time on the discovery+ app.

try some easy furnace boosters One of the simplest ways to get your furnace working at peak efficiency is to avoid letting it clog up with dust and debris, says Donna Kimble, president of AA-Air Company in Knoxville, TN. Filter for the win! Check the HVAC manual and the instructions that come with the filter to find out the recommended frequency for changing yours. (On average, every three months.) You also want to keep vents and registers throughout the house uncovered—if they’re blocked by furniture or piles of clothing left by kids, air can’t

HOT TIP and draws cold air up. (In summer, blades spinning counterclockwise propel air down for a cooling effect.)

Don’t forget to change the furnace filter. Add it to your calendar, or upgrade to a smart thermostat that will alert you when it’s time. PRESENTED BY

wallpaper-lined pendant lights 1. Measure out peel-and-stick wallpaper: Roll a lampshade along the wallpaper’s backing, using a pencil to trace the top and bottom edges. Cut it out, adding a 2-inch margin on the top, the bottom, and the end. 2. Put the wallpaper inside the lampshade. Use a pencil to mark where the lampshade’s metal supports are and cut out those areas. 3. Starting at one end of the wallpaper, peel off the backing a bit at a time as you press the paper down, smoothing bubbles as you go. 4. Use a crafts stick to push the wallpaper snugly under the top and bottom interior rims. Trim any excess paper with a crafts knife. 5. Turn the lampshade into a pendant light using a light cord kit. Use a 2-inch-wide soft-bristle crafts brush to apply a thick coat of Mod Podge until the fabric is fully saturated. Starting from the center of the vase and working outward, use your fingers to firmly smooth down the fabric, leaving the top and bottom edges loose. Remove the clothespins and press down on the seam to secure. (For thick fabric, apply Mod Podge on both sides.) 4. Cut small slits along the top and bottom edges in 1-inch intervals. LIVING ROOM Originally, the windows on either side of the TV were trim-less and looked kind of naked. “Installing trim was easier than I expected,” says Rebecca. She warmed up the room with various shades of pink and wood finishes, including a sideboard from Living Spaces and that stunner of a rug from Anthropologie. A matte black wall adds edginess. And yes, that’s a white sectional (by Downeast Home) in a home with three boys. “We have a ‘no food outside the kitchen’ policy,” says Rebecca. “Once, my mom brought out sandwiches… and the kids tattled!”

t’s fair to say that having itchy fingers for DIYing and decorating is a family trait for Rebecca Propes. “As a kid, I marveled at my grandma’s shaggy yarn wall hangings, the incredible metallic wallpaper in her dining room, and her basement walls that were decoupaged with covers from The New Yorker,” she says. These days, Rebecca is an impressive crafter in her own right. Her 61,900 devoted Instagram followers look to her for colorful, often rainbow-inspired projects and her funky style (you can’t miss those signature oversize glasses). When the family moved to a newly built home in Gilbert, AZ, she really had to roll up her sleeves. It needed an injection of character and personality, not to mention new everything, as the couple had sold their last home fully furnished. Rebecca put in bold wallpaper, art, and rugs—“a lack of color gives me anxiety!”—for a supercool and superfriendly vibe. Of course, a dedicated DIYer can’t stop there: “Our place will continue to be an evolution,” she says. “But I know my grandma would be very proud of this eclectic home.”

DIYed Major pattern play with Hygge & West wallpaper

DIYed Rebecca shined up a Target mirror with gold wax and revived a thrifted sideboard with Sunset Pink paint by Behr.

DINING ROOM “We are not formal dining room people, so I wanted fun and playful,” says Rebecca. She made a plain mirror look like a fab estate piece with ornate wood appliqués and Rub ’n Buff gold wax, and brought in lighthearted cow-print chairs from World Market and a globe chandelier by Mitzi. Propping up art on the sideboard makes rotating pieces a no-brainer, and also helps the space feel casual.

DIYing is personally satisfying, but it’s also about creating functional designs that work for your family—and literally making them happy. —Rebecca

“We are a big fajitas and taco house!” says Rebecca. “I’m also all about anything you can dip into a sauce—I’m known as The Dip Queen.”

DIYed Rebecca designed the shiplap-clad hood.

KITCHEN As soon as she started on this room, Rebecca fell hard for the kaleidoscopic porcelain tile from Lowe’s. She spread that love all over the back wall, from counter to ceiling. And for a neat effect on the hood’s wood overlay, she left the bottom piece of poplar unpainted. The giant quartz-top island—it’s 10 feet by 10 feet—is where Rebecca spreads out her sewing projects. Those tawny leather counter stools are from Overstock, and the perky peacock print is from Target.

MAIN BEDROOM This wall is one of Rebecca’s favorite projects. She used the Anthropologie pillow shams as inspo for the colors, but the design was straight out of her imagination. “Not having a plan was the plan,” she says, and the result is perfectly imperfect. The teal curtains, coverlet, and a beaded chandelier (from World Market) bring just the right amount of contrast. Rebecca placed small dressers from Living Spaces by the bed to help fill the 19-footby-18-foot space. “Nightstands would have looked like little dollhouse furniture,” she says.

DIYed It was painted with a broom!

DIYed Simple gold-toned hardware updates the vanity.

BATHROOM Sometimes you just want a room that says aaah, although if you’re Rebecca, you want oooh too. She made it airy with a mostly white palette and mod with geometric wallpaper from Graham & Brown. “It almost looks like tile,” she says…at a fraction of the cost. The rest of the elements are low-key, from the matte black faucets by Moen to the earthtoned rug from Target.

BRANDT’S BEDROOM Necessity is the mother of invention, they say, so when this mom couldn’t find a wallpaper whimsical enough for her eldest son’s interests, she got out her iPad and started drawing—pizza slices, science stuff, a video game controller—and had it printed by a wallpapermaker friend. To deck out the wall behind the desk, Rebecca painted $1.50 wood slats from the hardware store; the lively colors are in the wallpaper too.

DIYed Colorful desk backdrop

DIYed Rebecca designed this wallpaper.

LAUNDRY ROOM With bold wallpaper by Bari J. and a swath of shiplap that Rebecca flipped vertically and painted Black by Behr, this space makes folding clothes kinda fun.

BACKYARD “When we moved in, the area was a giant pile of dirt,” says Rebecca, who transformed it into a modern oasis. Look closely: That’s more of the kitchen tile on the fountain base. Sandblasted marble pavers (read: not slippery when wet) and turf keep the space cool during hot Arizona summers. The scalloped umbrella is from Safavieh.

C

oming home to a coastal retreat perched high on a bluff: That’s one way to make a fantasy come true! At more than approximately 3,300 square feet, the HGTV Dream Home 2021 in Newport, RI, is filled with enviable elements, such as 20-foot ceilings in the great room, a gorgeous navy and white kitchen, and

sparkling views complete with sailboats passing by. “When you walk inside, it really feels like you’re stepping inside another world,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn, who pulled inspiration from Newport’s outdoorsy culture. “From the cedar shingles on the exterior to the laid-back nautical touches in every room, this home is the best of New England Americana style and leisure.”

a dreamy great room Beachy rattan pieces, a soaring fireplace, and pretty blues—in the swivel armchairs and painting by artist John Gidding (yes, that designer from Trading Spaces)—soothe, while the wall’s deep wine (a 2021 color of the year) warms. For a pop of posh above, Brian hung a polished nickel chandelier by Longshore Tides. “It’s an ode to the mansions the area is known for,” he says.

a dreamy kitchen “Even just doing meal prep in this space would feel like you’re in a movie,” says Brian. He kept it airy (those large windows!) yet striking with a sea of navy cabinets from Cabinets To Go, an expansive 8-foot island, and oversize geometric twine pendants by Bay Isle Home. “I put in butcher-block countertops, stained a dark walnut, to keep the traditional feel flowing since we’re in New England,” says Brian. Amping up the marine theme, he had a range hood made to match the nickel-gap wall paneling and laid down a blueand-white striped rug by Annie Selke’s Dash & Albert, just like the one in the adjacent living room.

house tours a dreamy main bedroom “Lush green in a coastal setting may be unexpected, but it works because it’s a color found in nature and is ageless,” says Brian. For more getaway vibes, he chose a headboard woven from banana leaves (it’s by Panama Jack Home) and breezy accents like a rattan mirror. A brass telescope by the window charmingly draws attention to the view.

hen Derek and Lauren Wiggins and their two kids moved into this 2,000-square-foot Brooklyn, NY, apartment in 2019, they were thrilled with the space upgrade. Still, Lauren felt a little bummed about leaving the quiet serenity of their previous neighborhood for a louder, busier location. “I decided to make our place an oasis of calm,” says Lauren. She started with the room she liked least but used most: The all-white galley kitchen was a cramped, uninspiring space for cooking up her family-famous ramen, matzo ball soup, and fried chicken. The Wiggins had a wall knocked down, nixing a tiny mudroom. The idea of pinking out the spot came to Lauren as she explored cabinet colors. “My parents and my contractor were skeptical,” she says, “but I wanted to reclaim pink—it’s not just girly and feminine! We all feel so happy and peaceful here.” 96 HGTV Magazine
