Top tip

If you’re new to latch hooking, practise using the latch hook and a scrap piece of fabric before you begin the project.

You will need

Piece of thick card, 14cm wide ¯ Woollen yarn ¯ Scissors Latch hook

tool ¯ Latch hook 44 x 44cm canvas

Two pieces of backing fabric: 37 x 27cm and 37 x 20cm ¯ Pins Needle

and thread 45cm cushion pad

1Wind the yarn around the piece of card and cut the top and bottom to make a pile of short lengths of wool. Holding the latch hook in one hand, take one of your pre-cut wool pieces and wrap it around the shaft of the latch hook.

2Push the end of the latch hook into a hole in the canvas and then out through the hole directly above it. The latch should be open here. Hold the two ends of wool together and position them between the latch and the hook.

3Pull the hook towards you and out of the canvas. The latch will close over the wool and you can then pull through to complete the knot. Pull on the two ends evenly to tighten.

4Draw a 27cm square onto your canvas – this is your working square. When you have nished latch hooking your square, you can now turn it into a pillow cover. Take your two rectangles of backing material and turn over a 1cm double hem along one long edge on each piece. Pin and stitch the hem in place.

5Trim the latch canvas back to 2cm all around the edge of the worked section and fold into the edge of the wool section. Fold in a hem on three sides of the rectangle of backing fabric and pin across one end of the pillow. In this case you’re pinning the fabric with wrong sides together. Use thread doubled up to sew in an overstitch all around three sides.

6Add the other rectangle at the other end of the pillow in the same way. This rectangle should overlap the rst. Sew in position and ll with the cushion pad.
